Speaking of Rakusan’en, though. They recently released this new souvenir card for Rakusan’en, featuring Nagano Tsuyoshi’s Nobunaga artwork and some fancy gold foil lettering.
These souvenir cards are called Gojou’in 御城印, which are commemorative cards that you can buy at various castles in Japan. Castles usually would have a booth with a stamp of the castle’s site, and you can stamp on pamphlets or your personal journals as "proof” that you visited the place. These cards are intended to be stamped with those castle stamps, to keep as extra special memorabilia of your visit.
Rakusan’en is just the garden, but it seems that the residential mansion that was attached to the garden is actually Obata Castle. Since Obata Castle no longer exist, they offer cards for both Rakusan’en and Obata Castle that applies to the same site. I didn’t realise this at first because there are other Obata Castles in other places, and I’d gotten slightly confused before.
I’m not sure why the office didn’t just commission Nagano-sensei to draw the proper lords of the domain, but maybe Nobunaga is just more recognisable and therefore more attractive to customers. Though Nobukatsu is ostensibly the first lord of the domain entering the Edo period, he doesn’t seem to be distinguished as an independent lord of his own right by the city. All the Oda lords are collectively remembered as “Nobunaga’s bloodline”.
(Edit: Just to avoid being misleading, I meant “first” lord of the restructured/reorganised domains, that is, in the Edo period. Naturally, before the Oda were assigned here, this area was governed by different families. The city claims that the Oda were the ones who revitalised the area, so all the fanfare is about them, and Nobunaga is a very well-known name besides. I’m not sure if there’s much talk about the clans that lived there prior to them.)
The "castle stamp” is not even some unique design either. Instead of a special design that says either Obata Castle or Rakusan’en, it’s literally just the Tenka Fubu seal. Example of a stamped card being sold in the Mercari reseller site:

Tenka Fubu – One Realm Under One Sword. This was the motto of famed Sengoku Daimyo Oda Nobunaga who had it emblazoned on his personal seal. One of the towering figures of Japanese history, this Katana pays homage to the ambitious and capable Nobunaga. This Dragon King katana, composed from vibrant T10 high carbon steel, and its visible hamon, was created when the differentially-hardened blade was skillfully tempered. The tsuba of the sword prominently features Nobunaga's Kabuto helmet, whilst the kashira pommel cap displays the helmet of Takeda Shingen – his bitter rival. The fuchi blade collar bears a battle flag and a war fan to symbolize Oda Nobunaga's 1560 victory at Okehazama when he fooled Imagawa Yoshimoto's army into mistaking his encampment position with decoy battle flags before springing a trap upon them.

I’ll talk about Yoshimoto’s suddenly being non-dead here later.
This translation could be misleading. What they call a “signet” is actually what I usually refer to as “signature” (花押) instead . “Signet” usually means some sort of seal stamp, so you more history-savvy readers might think it’s the Tenka Fubu seal, but it’s not.
What they actually mean is this:
Tumblr media
Meaning that this fake letter only has the “Nobunaga” name, with no seal and no signature.
For what it’s worth it’s actually something that did happen where a lord made a carved “stamp” in the shape of the signature, so they don’t have to write it by hand every time. In which case the signature is technically a signet, I guess, but that’s not what’s happening here.
This was a plot point in the 2011 NHK drama “Gou - Himetachi no Sengoku”. It was Hideyoshi who faked a letter to the main character Gou in exactly the same manner: The fake letter is missing the sender’s 花押 signature, and only has a name. Maybe it’s a coincidence, or maybe the writers really were inspired by the drama.
I suppose why Hideyoshi can’t just accuse this to Yoshimoto’s face is for plot purposes, because formal signatures missing in personal letters is probably fine, but I highly doubt it’s fine in official documents. Even moreso when the letter is not being delivered by a trustworthy messenger.
There’s one real life example of a “formal” letter from Nobunaga that’s missing the name and signature altogether, but this was accompanied by a signed testament by one of Nobunaga’s personal guards that this is authentic.
Tumblr media
(no name, no signature of sender at all, only the name of the recipient is written)

I hope the news will find more Nobuspawns stuff, because I’m still curious what the hell is with that seal that he used. The seal uses a quote from first Han Emperor Gaozu, and it says “I’ve already conquered the entire nation” like WTF???
This doesn’t make any sense at all, and I’m just... surely he’s not somehow too dumb to understand what it means??
My shitpost theory is that this is a code for something else. There is a Japanese literary trope (in legends at least), where people uses puns in poetry to allude to something completely different based on homophones or word association.
The poem’s full sentence is “I’ve already conquered the entire nation, and I’m going home”, so maybe he’s saying that he’s not interested in going any further and is just staying put “at home”. Unification can go hang, if anyone else wants to have at it, then let them have at it. He just uses grandiose language (especially one that sounds similar to Tenka Fubu) to throw people off.
The even more shitpost interpretation that is totally not historical is that he meant what he says. Like maybe he somehow has this really complex network of minions all over the country. Don’t play, or he’ll crush you. And the reason why he maintained reasonable authority all the way through his death is that both Hide and Yasu are lowkey scared of what he might do.
(this is some anime bullshit that makes no sense, I’m just really spiteful of nonsense manga and novels and Taiga drama plots)

Sega Mega CD - SING!! Sega Game Music Presented by B.B.Queens
Title: SING!! Sega Game Music Presented by B.B.Queens / SING! セガゲームミュージック Presented by B.B.Queens
Record Label: BMG Victor
Release date: 26 July 1992
Catalogue No.: BVRR-1
Type: Soundtrack Album
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Technically this also belongs in the Mega CD section since Track 1 includes a game from Game no Kanzume volume 2: Teddy Boy Blues. Like I said in my Sonic 30th Symphony post, I am not a music expert, but I can agree that all the songs here in arranged format are pretty excellent. Especially since it includes one song from Wolf Team's Earnest Evans and Game Arts's Tenka Fubu. All of the songs' lyrics are included here if you feel like karaoke is coming your way.
Fun fact: The song "Funky Brothers" was intended to be the image song (the Western equivalent to a theme song) for the upcoming Sega System C2 arcade puzzle game SegaSonic Bros. The project was far enough in development to both receive numerous location tests and to have "Funky Brothers" published on an officially Sega-licensed soundtrack release (although purposefully misattributed to a different game entirely.) Ultimately, the SegaSonic Bros. arcade game was never released, and the song was never properly attributed to being Sonic-related until the modern era when a prototype of the game was dumped in 2016 and subsequently leaked two years later.

Tenka Fubu: Eiyuutachi no Houkou (MD Mini 2)
Tumblr media
This one is another game exclusive to the Japanese Mega Drive Mini 2, naturally. You won’t get anywhere with it if you can’t understand Japanese.
Game Arts made a wide variety of games but I can’t say I ever associated them with historical simulation games. Tenka Fubu feels a bit unneeded on the MD Mini 2 with Koei’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms here already, but I suppose if you want to scratch your Sengoku-era Japan itch this will do it. I can get into games like these now and then, and this one is a little less involved than Koei’s games. It reminds me a little of Dragon Force on the SEGA Saturn, but without the fantasy elements and exciting battle scenes.
To the extent that the SEGA CD found any success at all in Japan, it was because of meaty games like this one. The Mega Drive already skewed older than other consoles and the CD attachment even more so. You can almost smell the cigarette smoke while playing this game. An interesting example of the contrasting characters of the console in different regions, if nothing else.

Mystery solved! Strange seal is a Buddhist seal, presumably from a temple
Just the other day I posted this mysterious letter that was labelled "Oda Nobunaga" in an auction listing, and the name signature was legible enough to identify as indeed saying "Nobunaga".
It drew my attention because the seal is not Tenka Fubu, and I have no idea what it was at first. Well, I've identified the seal now. It's a Buddhist "Three Treasures seal".
I wasn't able to find a version of it that looks exactly like the one printed on the paper, but there's enough line similarities between the ones I did find and the mysterious seal, that I'm confident enough to say that it's indeed a variation of that very same seal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The text that is inscribed says: 佛法僧宝 (buppousoubou)
This means: "The treasures: the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha (monks)"
This might be some sort of document awarding a grant to a certain temple, or a statement of offering, and was stamped with the temple's seal. Unfortunately this is not something that I was able to find much info on. Temples do have seals that they apparently stamp on paperwork or sutras as proof of pilgrimage or offerings, but I couldn't find any other Sengoku period examples of this being done on a samurai document.
Without knowing what the letter actually says, it's hard to tell what's going on in here.
The auctioneer does not have a transcript of the letter's content, and I have no idea where it went now (presumably already bought by someone). So unless this text eventually turns up again elsewhere, with experts providing the analysis, I'm stumped.

Mitsuhide Akechi Eternal Route Preview
Do not repost or upload elsewhere!
Tumblr media
The lovers, who have revealed their lies and secrets, are about to set off again. Unaware of the immense trials that await them.
Tumblr media
Mitsuhide: “I’m happy, but there are still things I’m not good at. I trust the people of the Oda army, including you. Even so, no matter who it is, I don’t want to depend on someone else.”
I am aware of his hard, difficult loneliness only because I’ve placed my heart in it.
Mitsuhide: “As much as I’d make an irrational judgement, I… I'm drowning in the happiness of being able to love you unconditionally.”
(These words are not lies. Because it’s not a lie…… Happiness, sadness.)
Two hearts that do not overlap because of their feelings for each other.
A new conspiracy begins to crawl out from behind.
Tumblr media
Kichō: “I’ve been looking for you, Yoshiaki-sama.”
Yoshiaki: “……Who are you?”
Kichō: “Someone who wishes for your comeback more than anyone else in this world.”
…………
Tumblr media
Mai: “Kyaa?! Let go of me…!”
Mitsuhide: “……!”
(No………!)
A darkness called hell imprisons them, a ruthless decision that tears at the body and mind.
(Run away, you say……)
Tumblr media
Mai: “Why is Mitsuhide-san also together…”
Mitsuhide: “I can’t go with you.”
(But, I……love you.)
Mitsuhide: “Look up, Mai. One last kiss.”
The future of the two is separated by fate. And the sealed past that swoops in the depths of darkness.
Tumblr media
—I honestly thought that I wouldn’t mind dying at any time. That’s how it should be.
Mitsuhide: “I told myself that I didn’t care if I died, and I couldn’t help but believe in it… Did I want to live helplessly?”
In despair, the heart that should have been buried is revived.
Tumblr media
Nobunaga: “Mai. Going to help Mitsuhide now…means to reverse the path to Tenka Fubu, which he has bet his life to accomplish.”
(That can’t be……!)
Nobunaga: “—But, unfortunately, I’m greedy.”
Everything is irreplaceable for one person.
(If our feelings reach you.)
Tumblr media
Mai: “Please, tell me……!”
(Please, believe me, everyone!)
A ray of light cuts into the darkness, and the final battle begins.
Tumblr media
Mitsuhide: “—It’s useless to get in the way. Let’s meet in hell someday.”
With you, I overcome despair……
Tumblr media
Mitsuhide: “I want all of you. I love all of you. Do you want all of me too……?”
—The two of us go together into the promising light.

Man, I wonder if there will ever be something that clearly describes Nobu’s goals clearly or will it forever be a mystery
Like, there’s a theory that popped up that said “he just wants to conquer the capital”, so his ambitions is fulfilled already. But then why is he still using the Tenka Fubu seal after the shogun is ousted, and what’s he still doing fighting all the way up to his death?
My current headcanon is that he doesn’t want a government post. He wants to subdue all the provinces, and then give the power back to the emperor, and then yeet to retirement. The reason why he wants the crown prince to ascend the throne is that maybe he perceived Oogimachi as wishy washy, and he doesn’t want to deal with an emperor who’s floppy like shogun Yoshiaki again.
I still don’t know what to deal with the Frois thing that said he wants to go overseas though??? I had thought that if it just says “overseas”, then it might have just meant he wants to deal with Kyuushuu and Shikoku (as separate islands, they might count as “overseas”), but I read somewhere that what Frois wrote was literally China so like ?????? Okay?

Sega Mega CD - Tenka Fubu
Title: Tenka Fubu / 天下布武 英雄たちの咆哮
Developer/Publisher: Game Arts
Release date: 28 December 1991
Catalogue No.: T-45024
Genre: War Simulation
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tenka Fubu was the first Mega CD game to feature FMV (Full Motion Video), so it comes as no surprise that the developers, Game Arts wanted to use something impressive. The game opens with footage from a Japanese samurai movie with impressive scenes for such an early title. (Don't forget - the Mega CD launched in Japan on 12 December 1991, and this game was released 16 days after the hardware.) The actual game also looks impressive with graphics that make Koei's Genesis games look like Master System efforts. Mind you, there are quite a few graphical glitches here and there. Unfortunately, this game is unplayable without being able to read kanji at a native level. This really is a shame. Tenka Fubu is one of the few games based on historic Japan that's actually interesting and not some dull lesson in history (thank you Koei) and let's not forget the 3D audio used within the game. If you have a Japanese Mega Drive Mini 2, this game comes pre-loaded.
