Spotlight: Shibori (絞り) Hikizuri On The Eight Day of Fun I present... a look at one of the most dynamic types of kimono found in the karyukai: shibori kimono! Worn in the coldest months of the year (December - March) due to their thickness, shibori hikizuri are among the most fabulous and expensive types of kimono found in the karyukai. Shibori (絞り) is Japanese tie dyeing and is extremely labor intensive. The most popular type of shibori is called Kanoko (鹿の子); translated as "Deer/Fawn Spots," they're made up of tiny circles that are hand tied, one-by-one, to make fabulous and intricate patterns. In the karyukai, the most popular motif for shibori is flowers (it is the flower and willow world after all!). In these examples we can see chrysanthemums, wisteria, cherry blossoms, and more! The best time to see these beauties in real life is in December during Kaomise Soken and in February during Setsubun; this is where maiko dress up in their finest, and there's no finer kimono than a shibori one! More Retirements

As covid takes its toll more maiko have left the profession, including: Hidewaka (秀若) of Masamiya (雅美家) in Pontocho Kanohiro (叶紘) of Kanoya (叶家) in Gion Higashi It’s a real shame as Hidewaka had just begun her apprenticeship earlier this year and Kanohiro was poised to become a geiko before her erikae was called off due to the virus. Both will be missed.

Excellent News From Gion Higashi!

It seems as though the “curse” of the Kanoya okiya will finally end as Kanohiro (叶紘) will be having her erikae in April 2020! The last geiko to have her erikae from Kanoya was Masayo (満彩代) back in 2007 and the last maiko of the Kano- line goes back even before 2000! Kanohiro will begin to wear sakkō in March, so look out for pictures then ^^!

February 2019: Maiko Tomichie (Tomikiku Okiya), Maiko Kanochiyo (Kanoya Okiya), Maiko Kanotomo (Kanoya Okiya), Maiko Kanohiro (Kanoya Okiya), Maiko Masano (Man Okiya), Maiko Kanohisa (Kanoya Okiya) and Maiko Ryouma (Sakaemasa Okiya) of Gion Higashi performing at the Yasaka Shrine during Setsubun.

Setsubun is the traditional beginning of the lunar new year and celebrated every year from February 2nd to February 4th. A group of Maiko of each kagai of Kyoto perform several dances at their respective shrines and then throw lucky beans into the crowd to dispell evil spirits; this tradition is called mameaki.

Gion Higashi usually sends four or five Maiko to perform at the Yasaka Shrine on February 3rd, but this year, they send all their seven active Maiko to perform. Maiko Kanohiro got the center position, since she has the most seniority.

Ojigi (お辞儀) เป็นวิธีทักทายและแสดงความเคารพของชาวญี่ปุ่น ซึ่งถือว่าเป็นส่วนสำคัญส่วนหนึ่งในวัฒนธรรมญี่ปุ่นเลยก็ว่าได้ โดยการ Ojigi นี้นอกจากจะแสดงการทักทายหรือแสดงความเคารพแล้ว ยังสามารถตีความให้เป็นการขอบคุณและขอโทษได้ด้วย

พฤษภาคม 2562: ไมโกะ Kanohiro (โอกิยะ Kanoya) จากเขต Gion Higashi กับเครื่องประดับผมรูปแบบดอก Wisteria ญี่ปุ่น (藤 : Fuji) สำหรับเดือนพฤษภาคม

Kanzashi (簪/かんざし) คือเครื่องประดับผมที่ใช้คู่กับทรงผมแบบญี่ปุ่นโบราณ โดยอาจมีนัยเพื่อเป็นเครื่องรางป้องกันตัวในบางกรณี

เชื่อกันว่ามีการใช้เครื่องประดับผม Kanzashi ตั้งแต่สมัย Joumon (縄文時代 : Joumon Jidai) ซึ่งสมัยนั้นผู้คนนับถือท่อนไม้แท่งเป็นสิ่งที่มีพลังลึกลับที่สามารถขับไล่วิญญานชั่วร้ายออกไปได้ พวกเขาจึงนำสิ่งเหล่านี้มาสวมใส่บนศีรษะ อันเป็นช่วงเวลาไล่เลี่ยกันกับสมัยที่บรรพบุรุษชาวญี่ปุ่นรุ่นหลังบางกลุ่มเริ่มใช้หวีเพื่อประดับผมเช่นกัน

ต่อมาในสมัย Nara (奈良時代 : Nara Jidai) วัฒนธรรมหลากแขนงจากจีนเริ่มแพร่เข้าสู่ญี่ปุ่น รวมไปถึง “Zan (คำภาษาจีนที่ใช้อักษรตัวเดียวกับคันจิของคำว่า Kanzashi ในภาษาญี่ปุ่น)” และเครื่องประดับผมอื่นๆ ในสมัย Heian (平安時代 : Heian Jidai) ความนิยมของธรรมเนียมการรวบผมขึ้นมัดบนศีรษะได้ลดลง เปลี่ยนเป็นการปล่อยผมให้ยาวลงแล้วรวบปลา��ต่ำๆ ที่ช่วงหลัง ซึ่งเป็นช่วงเวลานี้นี่เองที่คำนิยามของคำว่า Kanzashi ได้ขยายวงกว้างจนรวมไปถึงปิ่น หวี และเครื่องประดับผมทั้งหมด ต่อมาในยุค Auzuchi-Momoyama (安土桃山時代: Azuchi-Momoyama Jidai) ธรรมเนียมการปล่อยผมยาวประบ่าก็ได้แผ่ขยายออกไปรวมถึงการทำผมแบบหลากหลายของชาวญี่ปุ่นสมัยโบราณหรือที่เรียกว่า Nihongami (日本髪)

ความนิยมสวม Kanzashi แพร่หลายอย่างมากในสมัย Edo (江戸時代: Edo Jidai) เมื่อทรงผมในสมัยนั้นเริ่มอลังการและซับซ้อนมากขึ้น จึงทำให้ต้องใช้ Kanzashi จำนวนมากขึ้นตามไปด้วย ทั้งช่างฝีมือก็ได้พยายามในการสร้างผลงานเครื่องประดับแต่ละชิ้นให้งดงามที่สุด และยังอาจมีการออกแบบแบบพิเศษเพื่อให้ Kanzashi นี้สามารถใช้เป็นอาวุธป้องกันตัวได้ด้วย ซึ่งความรุ่งโรจน์ของวัฒนธรรม Kanzashi ก็มีปรากฏให้เห็นตลอดยุคนี้เลยก็ว่าได้

ปัจจุบัน เครื่องประดับประเภท Kanzashi มักถูกสวมใส่โดยเจ้าสาว หรือสายอาชีพที่ข้องเกี่ยวกับความเป็นผู้เชี่ยวชาญทางด้านการสวมใส่กิโมโน เช่น เกอิชา หรือสวมใส่ Kanzashi ในพิธีที่เป็นทางการ เช่น พิธีชงชา, พิธีจัดดอกไม้ เป็นต้น อย่างไรก็ตาม ปัจจุบันมีหญิงอายุน้อยจำนวนมากที่นิยมสวม Kanzashi คู่กับชุดที่เป็นทางการอย่างชุดสูทเพื่อยกระดับความเป็นทางการและความสวยงามให้มากขึ้น ในอีกด้านหนึ่ง เกอิชามักสวม Kanzashi เพื่อแจ้งสถานะของเธอให้ผู้ที่พบเห็นรับทราบว่าเธออยู่ในระดับใดในโลกของเกอิชา ไมโกะหรือเกโกะฝึกหัดในเกียวโตจะสวม Kanzashi ที่สดใสและอลังการมากกว่าเหล่ารุ่นพี่ที่อาวุโสมากกว่า กล่าวคือยิ่งได้เลื่อนขั้นสูง เครื่องประดับผมก็จะยิ่งน้อยและดูเรียบง่ายมากขึ้น

Gion Kouta (祇園小唄) เป็นเพลงพื้นฐานที่สุดที่ไมโกะจะฝึกร่ายรำเป็นเพลงแรก เนื้อเพลงแบ่งออกเป็น 4 กลุ่มหลักๆ กล่าวถึงฤดูกาลทั้งสี่ในเกียวโต
