Whimsical modern kimono styling, using a treble knotted obijime as fun decoration.
Men kimono don't usually require obijime which are in fact used in women kimono fashion (they help to hold the obi knot tied).

A Bitter-sweet Birthday || Kyojuro x reader
Happy Birthday to my one and only Flame Hashira - Kyojuro! ❤️🔥❤️🔥
I miss the series, but mostly I miss him. Since it's his birthday, I decided to write something short.
Tags: @doumadono @shonen-brainrot @arthurbristow
ENJOY:
The day was sunny and calm with no clouds in the beautiful blue sky.
You woke up early and immediately started to get ready in the quiet privacy of your own room. The day was very important since it was your beloved's birthday today, and you were beaming with excitement and happiness.
The kimono you decided to wear was simple yet pretty. It was plain white fabric with a fiery pattern at the edges, and with fitting red obi and golden obijime. You looked like the real Rengoku, just without flame-like hair.
You were working on pinning your hair up when your door slid open.
Senjuro looked inside and smiled, seeing you in front of the little vanity table. "You are up early. I should have expected that you would be excited to celebrate. Do you need help?" He asked with his soft voice.
You nodded your head. "Yes, please. You are much better at this."
Boy laughed and soon joined you, easily pining your hair up in a simple hairstyle that suited the occasion.
"Oh! Can you put it in?” You asked, handing him a gold hairpin.
Senjuro nodded and fulfilled your request. "My brother did his best picking this for you."
"Yes, I know. Best gift ever," you chuckled and looked into the mirror, admiring Senjuro's work. "Thank you so much."
"No problem. Will you help me a little too? I need some help with cooking,” he asked, and you of course nodded before getting up and following him to the kitchen.
There, you pulled your sleeves up and helped him with preparing miso soup with sweet potatoes and some simple sweets. After all it was a day to celebrate, and what celebration would it be without real sweets!
"You think we have everything?” you asked.
Senjuro shook his head. "I couldn't buy the last thing from our list," he said, looking down.
You just gave him a small smile and ruffled his hair. "No need to worry, we can buy it on our way to him.”
"There will be no need for that. Here.” It was no one else but Shinjuro.
At first his sudden, loud voice made you stiff, but then you realized he was handing you a box with the last thing from the list. Blinking, you looked up at him, not hiding your confusion.
"Just take those to him. I bought them this morning after seeing them on Senjuro's list. I figured out you will need these," man explained.
You smiled widely and bowed. "Thank you so much, Shinjuro-san. We indeed needed those."
"Thank you, father, he will be happy to receive these," Senjuro added with a kind smile.
Shinjuro looked at both of you as if he wanted to add something, but he decided to stay quiet instead. He just turned away and left.
The two of you returned to cooking and chatting, sharing some giggles while doing so.
------------------------------------------
When the food was ready, Senjuro packed it up, you collected other stuff you planned to take, and you both set off on the road.
It wasn't a long trip but going with a friend was an amazing feeling.
The closer you got, the more excited you became. You couldn't wait to celebrate Kyojuro's birthday.
The burial ground seemed quiet and calm, as if it was frozen in time together with everyone else, buried deep in its grounds.
All you could hear were birds singing softly, their songs carried by a quiet whisper of the wind that sneaked around the crowns of trees and soft splash of a river nearby. The sun's gentle warmth enveloped the serene atmosphere, casting a comforting glow on the world.
"Aniki," Senjuro said happily and ran up to one of the graves, setting everything down next to it.
You quickly followed him and smiled looking at the grave. "Good to see you again, love."
After the quick greeting, you and Senjuro got to work, cleaning the grave. You made sure to visit Kyojuro regularly so there was a small amount of cleaning needed.
In the end, you pulled out the box that Shinjuro gave you and pulled out incense sticks. You lit them up and placed them on the grave.
You and Senjuro clasped your hands together, preparing for the prayer ahead with a sense of unity and reverence.
Senjuro finished first, and started putting down a little blanket. You joined him shortly after, and helped him with setting everything up.
"Aniki. Everything's good at home, father has stopped drinking, and things are much calmer there now. He even accepted Y/N around," Senjuro said, even if his words were greeted by nothing but silence.
"That's true, but I still try to do my best to stay out of his way. Today he bought us incense sticks for you, love," you smiled softly.
Senjuro nodded and picked up his little bowl of soup. "Happy birthday, aniki. I wish you were still here. I miss having you around.”
You smiled sadly, doing the same as he did. "Happy birthday, my love. I miss you dearly."
The rest of the celebration went calmly.
You talked and joked with Kyojuro, telling him everything that happened since the last visit.
If you only knew he was there indeed, sitting next to his own grave, listening to both of you and feeling happy, hoping the warm sun rays would convey how glad he was to celebrate his birthday with his little brother and the love of his life.

I'm back with more Mononoke movie obi analysis! The movie team has been putting out a lot of clips on their various accounts, so I've managed to get a more full look at the back of Kusuriuri's obi! This is my proposal for the structure of the knot, but if anyone has any other ideas, I'd love to see them.
I had to make a little paper mockup to figure this out lol:
However, because it's small and paper, it probably is behaving differently than a large, fabric obi. So I'm not sure how well this knot would work with a real obi, but if someone has the means to try it out, please let me know! Something that was interesting and made this a little frustrating was that both ends of Kusuriuri's obi are free, whereas it seems like for most established types of obi musubi, one end will be tucked into a loop shape or otherwise hidden away, and the other will have a free end (Even many examples of the men's obi knot I included a picture of above. I purposely found one that looks more like the knot I did, but in many cases you will fold one tail into a loop so there's only one free tail). This is also a feature of TV Kusuriuri's obi:
It's a little hard to tell because of the low resolution, but I'm sure you've seen enough of him by now lol; his obi is tied into a bow with both ends hanging loose. I've seen his knot compared to a tateya musubi, and they are visually similar, but from what I can tell, a tateya musubi is structured like I described, where one tail is folded into a long, rectangle shaped loop, and the other is wrapped around the center of it to squeeze it into a bow.
See how there are no hanging tails? It's because both tails are making the whole bow. Contrast that with Kusuriuri's, where the tails are dangling because the loops of the bow are made by the upper sections of the tails. His obi is tied like you'd tie a shoelace, basically, whereas a tateya musubi is like a bow you'd see on very nice gift wrapping.
Anyway, I also was able to glean more about the pseudo-obijime:
Previously, I thought maybe both white cords were connected to each other and looped through the knot, as shown on the top left. However, these two shots (and others not included) seem to disprove that. The left shoulder cord starts from underneath the obi, loops around the back, under the right arm, and ends in between the two layers of the obi. The waist cord starts and ends under the ohashori (waist fold). What it's attached to, I'm not sure, but I'm guessing it's anchored to the smaller obi/sash that's worn under the actual one.
#YIPPEE i think i can call this case closed pretty much but lmk what you think!#i hope this can help cosplayers or artists who are trying to figure out wtf is going on with his clothes#though realistically cosplayers are just gonna use a premade obi i'm sure lol#mononoke#kusuriuri#kusuriuri 2024 clothing investigation

Waaaaaaaaa I’m back with more yokai fusions & also a comically small Buchikoma
L-R: Blazitina, RoboGrapenyan, Damonono, Buchikoma, Komajisan, Pandatina
Again more design thoughts under tha cut ✌️
My fingers always feel sore after typing this much….. Lots of learning about the details of traditional clothes this time. I chose these pairings cuz I felt lazy & wanted to draw the simpler ones first lol
Blazitina: Lion girl 👍 First thing I can think of in my thought process was making the belt an obi sash. Tattered at the ends to batch Blazion’s & with an obijime for fun. I didn’t super feel like giving her the same kind of Miku-esque kimono sleeves that I gave Lord Lie-In so I just made them weird kinda arm warmers. Did the same for her pants too, I’m not sure what they’re called but they’re inspired by the leg warmer kinda things in PLA on the fancy kimono. Also gave her a juban cuz idk I made her gi dip too far under her arms & yknow she’s a little lady she’s gotta stay covered up. I know all of this traditional kimono gear isn’t conductive to good karate but whatever…… She doesn’t get boots cuz I like drawing paws & her ahoge mimic Blazion’s scar (I didn’t have enough room to fit it in). I was thinking of giving her an x shaped hair clip but I thought it’d be too busy on her head. Overall despite some things I’d change (the way I shaped the obi I know realize the shape is TOO stylistic) I think this is my favourite design of the bunch
RoboGrapenyan: Very much inspired by the pkmn Violet paradox mons* (*See the bells & eyes.) Not much to say it’s a pretty straightforward fusion. The tail onibi are lightbulbs because it feels more robotic & I thought it’d be cool. The jet exhaust is grape soda……. That was a choice. LOOK I’LL EXPLAIN, uh….. grape….. grape exhaust? Grape vapor? Grape soda????? Sure. Also I think in the back of my mind I was thinking of that soda gun from that one episode of SpongeBob. Naughty Nautical Neighbors. I had to google it I had to know what episode it was….. yeah.
Damonono: YAAAAYYYYY FIRST TIME DRAWING HAKAMA THEY’RE WEIRD BUT I’LL GET BETTER AT IT!! They’re supposed to be split leg hakama but in every reference I looked up they’re so wide that they just look like the skirt kind rather than having two leg holes. I gave them hakama cuz bootleg jeans would be weird with a kimono. And I like hakama. That’s it. The sleeves….. Let’s talk about those. I didn’t wanna give them the heart guns/cannons cuz idk…. I liked the way Damona’s hands were posed & I wanted to keep that. So instead they have weird fucked up heart shaped kimono sleeves. I wanted to keep Damona’s long obi too but I thought it might mess with the silhouette already having the sleeves & also that’s just not a thing you do with hakama. So….. her sleeves are kind of like the end of her obi…….. I’m only now realizing she could’ve had them tied up normally & they could still hang that low….. whatever. In my mind they go under the obi, get tied up so they can put on the hakama, & then untie them & let them hang over the hakama. Look I don’t think of fashion in terms of is this normal? Is this practical? If it looks good I do it. Not much else to say. I had to look up a tutorial on how to put on hakama cuz I wanted them to be as accurate as possible……. And now I know how to put them on so that’s cool I guess. I LOVE LEARNING!!!!!!!!
Buchikoma: Again pretty simple. I gave him a little tuft of hair to emulate Buchinyan’s wispy hair tuft. I forgot to draw the spot of the side of the right thigh, lol. His eye spot is shaped like an onibi cuz it’s cute 👍. His haramaki has the patterning of Jibakoma’s tummy spot cuz I can’t not give him the haramaki that’d be a crime. His ears are farther apart & smaller like Jibakoma’s, & his tail onibi are shaped like that cuz idk I tried to imagine what Jibakoma’s tail looked like & I thought of that. Overall another one of my favourite yokai fusions I’ve done. That’s my son
Komajisan: SPLIT EARS!!!!! Inspired by a fandom design of a certain character from a certain comic I won’t name….. IYKYK. Split ears cuz 2. Also extra swirly bits on the swirls cuz 2. I was thinking of adding blue spots to his bindle but I didn’t like how it looked so I didn’t do it. Fun paw spots cuz it’s cute. Forehead onibi are kinda angry lookin cuz idk….. I just felt it. Also mini onibi in between the forehead ones cuz 2. Some makeup accenting cuz……. IT’S CUTE!!!!!!!! I was also thinking of making the onibi half brown & half blue but it looked bad so yeah, I didn’t do it.
Pandatina: Probably my favourite in terms of lineart. I actually got noticeably better at drawing kimono particularly the sleeves. I’m proud :]. I honestly didn’t feel like giving her a haori/cape/whatever so I didn’t (also I just forgot to lol.) So she has a good sewn into the collar of her kimono. Clover shaped obijime like Slimatina cuz it looks cool & I like it, also I needed more clover shapes lol. She’s got one in her hair because of that too, I was thinking of making it blue but I thought nahh. She’s intentionally very pale cuz I wanted her skin tone to really match the snake part of her body. And she has eyeshadow on to emulate the spots around Pandanoko’s eyes, same with her pupils. Again just a simple fusion

The look of… IX: Hakone-Yumoto Onsen
History Although it‘s likely that Geisha worked in Hakone since the late 19th century, not much can be found about their history. The current Kenban was built in 1950 [1]. In the early/mid 80's (before the bubble economy), 400-450 Geisha lived in Hakone [2]. The Otosan of Ikedaya Okiya reformed the traditional employment system and introduced benefits like pension plans and financial compensations for cancelled jobs [3].
In 2000 latest, the Hakone Yumoto Kenban launched its own website [4], creating a space for Okiya to advertise and look for new members [5]. In 2001, the Okasan of Wakita became the current head of the Geigi Union. In order to ensure the survival of local Hanamachi culture, the Kenban became open to public in 2008, and the Geisha band Basara (婆娑羅) was founded in 2009. [2]
In the late 2010's, around 150 Geisha from age 18 to 80 lived in 32 Okiya. Lack of work during the Corona pandemic reduced their numbers to 109 in 2021. The amount of Geisha working in Hakone has increased meanwhile, with 140 of them active in January 2024, but still hasn‘t reached its pre-pandemic levels. [2]

Arts: The schools taught in Hakone are Nishikawa 西川 (dance), Honjo 本條 (Kouta, Hauta and Min‘yo), Kineya 杵屋 (Nagauta) and Tosha 藤舎 (Hayashi). [6]
Kirariko is a newly coined term in use since 2003 to call junior Geisha in the age group from 18-30. [7] Upon turning 30, Kirariko have to take either a „dancer grade B“ or „dancer grade A“ test. To pass the B test, she has to perform two dances. For the grade A test, she has to perform three female style and three male style dances. [8]
Companions: Okiya recruit and employ companions as well as Geisha. Companions receive a fixed wage, which is usually lower than that of the Geisha, but the customer pays the same price. Companions can be requested to wear either western clothing or Kimono. Western clothing is a business suit provided for free by the Okiya, Kimono can be rented for a set fee by the Okiya as well. [9] Companions receive professional names like Geisha. They don‘t study performing arts and can work part-time. Their job is to serve drinks and food and engage in „pleasant conversation“ with customers at banquets. [10] In my opinion, a good entry-level job in the Karyukai – some companions became Geisha later in their carreer. [11]
Becoming independent: after being Geisha for seven years, you have the opportunity of opening a branch of your debut Okiya. In all cases I know, the new Okiya takes one or two characters from the original Okiya. For example Ikedaya 池田家 → Wakita 和喜田 and Yukieda 雪江田 (田 Kanji is part of the new name). Wakita 和喜田 → Suzuwa すず和 and Yukiwa ゆき和 (和). Kitami 㐂田見 → Kisaya 㐂茶家 (㐂).
Changing Okiya registration: only possible when becoming independent, or when your (biological) mother, sister, or daughter opens a new Okiya.

Another kimono made from the Dolly*Dolly volume 24 pattern, and it's another one with a print that I think of as "state fair appropriate" (like the corn kimono)
I tried sewing the decorations to the obi this time, as shown in another Japanese doll sewing magazine I've seen scanned, and I managed to get the obijime knot off center. Lesson learned for next time.
The doll is...well...
I got her second hand to give the body to someone else, then got curious about what was under that paint.
Yeah, I was surprised. And then I realized the skin tone match with the Xinyi body was very good.
I painted her really fast; might try repainting her again sometime with a little more care.

February 29th, 2024: As one chapter comes to a close, another shall soon start. Fujichiyo (ふじ千代) of Fuji (ふじ) in Kamishichiken is wearing her sakkō ensemble ahead of her quickly approaching erikae. She will be the first erikae for the newly opened Fuji okiya and the first for Kamishichiken in nearly two years. Per Kamishichiken's tradition, she is wearing a lovely powder blue iromontsuki with a kai awase (shell matching game) pattern and pine with a black interlocking tortoiseshell pattern obi. Since this is a formal outfit she does not wear an obijime and a pocchiri. Her kanzashi features a simple motif of silver and gold pine, which will be passed down to other maiko in her okiya in the future. Her erikae will take place on March 4th ^^ Image is courtesy of Atelier Hanae.

Sleek summer-spook outfit, pairing a kasuri (an ikat technique) kimono, with a cute obi with tiny dokuro (skull).
With the coming of Obon celebrations, summer months are seen as the spooky seasons in Japan, hence why motifs like nozarashi (weather-beaten bones) are not unusual on summer fashion items.
I like the matching marukuge (obijime made from fabric tubes filled with cotton). In the past, those were mostly used for formal attires yet recently, you see them more and more paired with informal kimono.

No. 13 - 2012
Character: Ryougi Shiki (ARC Drive ver.) Series: Kara no Kyoukai by TYPE-MOON
Cosplayer Credits: - Kouma: My brother
Photog Credits: - Lauren - Kirky
==========
This was another costume ~mostly~ for my brother. He really wanted to be Kishima Kouma from the game Melty Blood (he also features briefly in Tsukihime), and showed me Ryougi. I had always wanted to make a kimono and really liked her overall design so I put a lot into this costume!
==========
I chose to use an Le Tigre Long from Arda Wigs in Dark Purple (023) because I'm using the very detailed figurine as my main reference source and it's hair is faintly purple. In most lighting, it will look dark brown or black.
I used Simplicity's kimono pattern (4080) for the cotton under kimono and main, silk, furisode kimono. Sadly, I couldn't find perfectly matching fabric for it, but I hope it's close enough (it's a poly silk). I'm not using any pattern for making the obi (brocade) though I learned how to tie the obi into a tateya musubi knot which is the knot on both the figurine and from what I've seen in her anime. I also got material for the obijime (cord from eJoyce), obiage (scarf; crepe), and obiita (simple cardboard with yarn ties).
The sword (Kanesada Kuji) is made out of pine (hilt and blade) and balsa (guard) and spray painted. Hilt is wrapped in ribbon. My dad helped me with the cutting and sanding.
For my brother's... I used the Chinese pajama pattern from Folkwear and simple black cotton. Which was also used for pretty much everything else... pants and foot wraps. We actually burned the bottom of his pants because I wanted the effect that he could actually produce fire, like in the game. I used black spandex for the gloves and just traced his hand to make a pattern.
I actually made the clasps from faux pearl buttons and scrap fabric. I kept complaining about how ridiculous Kouma's clasps were and how they don't work like normal Chinese clasps so I just set out to make them myself. And the wig is a Shaggy Wave Wig with Long Bangs in Shadow Blue from Shop Cosplay (Cosplay.com's wig shop).
==========

Kouma: Cost: $79 Time: 12 hrs

And the Rose Charm Candelabra Obi Accessory/Obijime is a lovely redesign! I'm looking forward to wearing all of these. And there is more...

@thecrowsart re the obi knot for 2024 Mononoke's Kusuriuri
I didn't have the right obi type for it, I used a hanhaba obi sash for the grip/strength of the fabric, so the proportions aren't perfect and I haven't nailed the length balance for the ends to stick out equally, but basically I folded some parts in half, some loop de loops, etc. This was before we got a full view of his back from the last trailer so it might need revisions. I'm gonna try making some fukuro obi mock ups for better knot testing, and marking when what fabric starts when, as fukuro obi sashes will sometimes have changes in fabric for cool effects on specific knots, which seems to be the case with this one (thus why it changes from red to purple to checkered) the little knot in the main knot is clearly an obiage, it's orange so highly unlikely to be part of the obi, plus shape is rounder so yeah. Basically this hole thing is like, knot base inspired by actually Tateya musubi knot on a fukuro obi, but the ends of the knot are the tips of the sash, whereas a tateya musubi can't do that the way it's folded.
So yeah this goes a bit crazy
Someone in one of my cosplay servers suggested it might be based off Kabuki obi sashes, which had cords at the ends to tie them faster for theatre changes etc. Kusuriuri's does have a string wrapped around the obijime, so like maybe? But idk, also I'd much rather make a full one piece sash obi than have to un piece how to make a Kabuki inspired sash...
Tho tbh looks more like a cord for the round mirror, so could be wrong

I recently saw this book on 100 kitsuke tips by Sunao on Amazon JP and thought to try it out, purely for this one page - tips for wearing kimono as a plus sized lady!
はじめてさんからベテランさんまで使える 楽しくなる着付け 100のコツ
ISBN 978-4046058850
Some very roughly translated kitsuke tips for the larger lady:
1) Wear your obi wider in the front. (Fold the tesaki to show more than half, if able)
2) Widening more of your juban collar (away from the neck) will make your face look narrower.
3) Taper your skirt to make your legs look slimmer.
4) Neaten the sides of your kimono so that there is no overhang above your obi - this has a slimming effect.
5) If your obijime is too short to wear normally, you can tie a knot in the middle of the obijime and then tie the rest behind like you would for obidome. (From the referred page, another alternative is to link two too-short obijime together and tie them together to get a longer obijime.)
6) Stripes make people look taller, but it can make us look wider if the stripes are unevenly matched up when worn.
7) Wear similar colours for kimono and obi to avoid a horizontal divider that makes us look larger.
8. Wear larger obidome to be more proportionate to size.
9) You can combine more than one too-short obi to add length!
I find this book quite useful, and hope sharing this review and table of contents will also be useful to others!
