Spotlight: Shibori (絞り) Hikizuri On The Eight Day of Fun I present... a look at one of the most dynamic types of kimono found in the karyukai: shibori kimono! Worn in the coldest months of the year (December - March) due to their thickness, shibori hikizuri are among the most fabulous and expensive types of kimono found in the karyukai. Shibori (絞り) is Japanese tie dyeing and is extremely labor intensive. The most popular type of shibori is called Kanoko (鹿の子); translated as "Deer/Fawn Spots," they're made up of tiny circles that are hand tied, one-by-one, to make fabulous and intricate patterns. In the karyukai, the most popular motif for shibori is flowers (it is the flower and willow world after all!). In these examples we can see chrysanthemums, wisteria, cherry blossoms, and more! The best time to see these beauties in real life is in December during Kaomise Soken and in February during Setsubun; this is where maiko dress up in their finest, and there's no finer kimono than a shibori one! Images Mameyuri (豆ゆり) Kanohiro (叶紘) Hidemai (秀眞衣) Kimisora (君宙) and Kimishō (君翔) Kohatsu (小はつ)

Kanoko is just like me fr, looks and everything
(there's apparently homophobia and sexual assault somewhere in here and I'm scared it's gonna involve Kanoko)

Aggretsuko: Stress Explosion Elementary School Student Edition - Chapter 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A year ago, Corocoro magazine uploaded the first chapter of an Aggretsuko manga called Aggretsuko: Stress Explosion Elementary School Edition. The manga explores Retsuko's childhood in elementary school and is basically a prequel to the shorts or the TV show. I found it to be as funny as most other stuff relating to the character and saw it as a relief that the artist ditched the idea of Retsuko suffering in an office. The primary school setting offers relatable struggles that kids can identify with as they laugh at Retsuko's responses to these mundane issues.
I wanted to translate the first chapter. But I thought I'd wait a while to do so. Since the chapter upload is a year old now, I saw nothing wrong with starting the translation process for it. I was also going through some serious things at the time and wanted to use this manga to get out some frustrations. It was a lot more refreshing than having a metal breakdown of my own.
Now that this is over with, I should get back to Pokémon Pocket Monsters DP. If you want to read the Japanese original for yourself, you can do it on Corocoro's website.

Youthful antique furisode-nagajuban, showing full-bloom sakura among fluffy kanoko-patterned clouds.
Kanoko (fawn spots) is a type of shibori tye-dye, which was once used a lot for girls items (clothes, accessories, etc). As it was time consuming and so expensive, it came to be "faked" via resist-dyeing stencils or printing techniques.

kanoko-chan is a complex character, better read the manga to try to understand. her mindset is different from the others
but I actually like those facial expressions she makes; it really seems like she’s going to lose her mind at some point

Nuvema Town’s Japanese name which is Kanoko Town (ka no ko = deer’s child = fawn), likely named after the many Shikajika (Deerling) there, but kanoko is also the name of a traditional Japanese emblem and pattern inspired by a fawn’s dappled coat. ^^
