May 16th, 2024: The Kanki Inari Shrine Festival took place today in Gion Higashi and Masanao (満彩尚) of Man (まん) was spotted wearing the sakkō hairstyle! During Man's last erikae, Masano's, the okiya was celebrating their first such event and as such borrowed the majority of their outfit from the Shigenoya okiya. This time around, it seems as though Shigenoya has gifted the gorgeous purple kimono to Man and that Man has purchased a new stunning black shippō patterned obi and a double crane kanzashi. Fun Facts about this friendly cactus

- Very good at puzzles and lateral thinking, which mainly manifests as someone who can figure out the ever frequent slide puzzle locks common in the worst possible places to have a slide puzzle lock

- her first name is Opal, but only her Nana refers to her by that. It’s unclear where “Mags” is even derived from.

- Incapable of combat but has an uncanny Power of Persuasion that makes anyone she befriends immediately willing to Kill or Die on her behalf. This occurs regardless of her own wishes.

She is a living Battle Standard/VIP to the point of it being a whole combat style

- Is actually a clone of her “Nana”, being grown like a cutting from Nana��s severed arm into a biologically identical but separate being.

- If a Teambase OC is a resident of Traverse then they know Mags and are one of her friends. In particular, she grew up alongside Jess, Juniper, Rigel, Jamish, Deandra, and Masano as schoolmates/neighbors.

To clarify/fact check, that's Eiji Tsuburaya, the co-creator of both Ultraman and Godzilla. He converted to catholicism after his wife (Masano Araki) did, sometime around the late 1940s.

It's that time of year when Tumblr celebrates Easter by posting pictures of crucified anime characters, and inevitably somebody in the notes will pop up to helpfully explain that crucifixion imagery has no cultural significance in Japanese media because Japan is only about 1% Christian, which bugs me because it's completely wrong.

It's true that in the majority of cases, crucifixion in Japanese cartoons isn't meant to be conveying any specific theological message, but something Western audiences are likely to miss is that a large portion of those random crucifixion scenes are referencing Ultraman.

Ultraman's creator was a devout Roman Catholic who explicitly intended the titular hero to read as a Christ figure, and consequently, various Ultramen have been crucified on multiple unconnected occasions throughout the franchise's history. Crucifixion scenes in Japanese cartoons are often directly name-checking particular crucifixion incidents from Ultraman, right down to emulating the compositions and camera angles of specific shots. It's like an especially morbid version of the Akira slide.

The upshot is that while it's true that the inclusion of gratuitous crucifixion scenes in Japanese cartoons typically has no (intentional) theological message, stating that they have no cultural significance is incorrect. A large chunk of the Japanese viewing audience are going to see them and immediately go "hey, that's an Ultraman reference".

 they’re in vessal’s gang and while overtly they have a normal professional relationship but behind the scenes masa is vessal’s most trusted member and often times hy will assign the most serious jobs (usually hits) to masa. they’re a hitman! masano and itekei are close friends and often times masano works partly as a body guard for itekei when he’s getting information ^_^

Gion Kobu had 2 misedashi and 4 erikae, which is great as they also sadly had 5 retirements. This still puts them on a +1 for the year though, so that's good news here. Pontocho continues to have great numbers with 2 misedashi and 1 erikae. With no retirements, they end the year on a +3. Kamishichiken had an iffy year. With 2 misedashi and 2 retirements (1 of them being 1 of the misedashi), they end on a neutral 0, which is this year's biggest loser. Miyagawa Cho had a profitable year with 4 misedashi and 4 erikae. With only 3 retirements they end on a whopping +5. Last year's biggest loser in Gion Higashi showed this year's biggest bounce back. With 5 misedashi and 1 retirement, they end on a fantastic +4. Overall, seeing everyone end the year in the black once again is fantastic and is a positive sign after the pandemic. There were also overall gains in misedashi and no changes for retirements, so the total number in the karyukai has gone up! What do you think 2024 has in store for us? Let me know in the comments!

Masano Komainu, Diviner & Dog Boy

Masano Komainu - onmyodo, 12+1 Beasts-style astrology A folksy komainu and practitioner of Terra-2's zodiac-based divinations. His family runs a noodle shop neighboring Mags' Nana's general store and thus is very close to the Napolis. While his interactions with Mags can be seen as romantic by others, they're just close platonic friends. Besides, Masano already has a boyfriend... the feared Dweller Bounty Hunter "Rip-Terror the Slaughterer" a.k.a. Stanley Slaughter (pronounced Slaf-ter). The visual references to Asriel/Ralsei, Connie Maheswaran, and Komasan are intentional, as in a previous iteration of the Teambase canon, they were literally just those characters.
