Doodling bug!beato and thinking about what it means to have butterfly imagery… active transformation into something beautiful. A fragile thing to be looked at, pined after, pinned down in place. Wings that present the image of a predator. How elegant! How noble! And yet rather alien and hideous when looked at through a microscope.

Did you know that, in the process of chrysalis, the caterpillar’s body is turned to slush, digesting itself as it dissolves - yet butterflies, once assembled, have been proven to retain memories from before the liquid state?
