3.5 HOUR VIDEO ESSAY ABOUT PANIC! AT THE DISCO'S SPLIT HAS ARRIVED!!
In the words of MTV writer James Montgomery, “The history of Panic! at the Disco is a complicated one, filled with firings and departures…”
But specifically, this essay concerns the melodramatic peak of their “tumultuous” history: the 2009 departure of Ryan Ross (the band’s primary songwriter) along with bassist Jon Walker. Following the split, vocalist Brendon Urie and drummer Spencer Smith continued Panic! at the Disco, while Ross and Walker went on to form The Young Veins.
The popular narrative surrounding Panic at the Disco’s history often focuses on the conflict between Brendon Urie and Ryan Ross, and how Ross’ fierce independence and artistic drive —juxtaposed against Brendon Urie’s equally fierce ambition and desire for autonomy—clashed and led to the dissolution of the band.
However, this 3.5 hour deep dive examines Panic! at the Disco’s 2009 split through a completely different lens. I broaden the scope of my analysis beyond PATD’s two frontmen, and explore the conflicts between the band, their label, and the press.
By looking beyond the band, this essay illuminates under- or un-explored elements of the split, and helps us better understand just what happened that led up to Panic’s implosion and the disappearance of Ryan Ross.
This essay primary analyzes the conflict and camaraderie between three of the most influential writers and voices of 2000s emo, and how the interplay between them paints a more complete picture of both the scene and Panic at the Disco’s demise.
These writers are:
1. Ryan Ross, Panic at the Disco’s frontman, lyricist, and “creative mastermind.”
2. Pete Wentz, the frontman and lyricist of Fall Out Boy and the business mastermind behind Panic’s label, Decaydance Records.
3. James Montgomery, the senior rock editor of MTV News, architect of emo rock history, and the ghostwriter of Wentz's novel Gray.
After meeting our main characters, I’ll provide an in-depth history of everything that occurred before, during, and after Panic!'s 2009 split. Then in Part Two, we’ll ask the million-dollar question: what sent Panic! off the rails? Was it really just “musical differences”? Here, I’ll make the argument that looking beyond Pretty. Odd.’s rosy sound and analyzing it through a literary lens paints a clear picture of core conflicts that factored into the breakup.

what a wonderful caricature of intimacy
(commentary + process under the cut, reblogs appreciated!!)
about the piece: was anyone else obsessed with the line “accessorizing with a rosary tucked inside her lingerie” ???? genuinely, “build god and then we’ll talk” was my FAVORITE song almost entirely because of that line, it’s SOO GOOD. maybe it’s because I’ve kinda made it my thing to illustrate songs, but I really appreciate when songs have really descriptive lyrics/ideas that translate really well into visual art.
also, more about my process: I’ve realized two things about myself and my art w/ this piece:
1. i don’t really like working with color at all!! it’s just not very fun for me, I’d much rather work in shades of black and white and use my beloved screen tones instead :)
2. i like a lot of angular shapes— curved lines make me mad and i would prefer not to mess w them (read: loser who won’t put in the effort to draw anything resembling a circle)
I really enjoyed almost “carving” out this figure—i usually start with a black canvas and add a blob of white that vaguely resembles the form and then slowly using black to carve out the figure. adding the screen tones and creating the back-lit effect was also super cool (the lighting probably isn’t that accurate, but i never said i was GOOD at it)
also, if you’ve been following me for a while, you probably recognize this concept from my earlier dance dance piece:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
they are very similar concept wise, but around a year apart!! i think I definitely like the execution of the more recent one better, but it’s cool to see the evolution of my art despite me not making art that often anymore. I can’t say much to whether or not the anatomy in either of the pieces is accurate, but I would probably assume that the recent one is more accurate
usually I would end these types of posts with some commentary about the song, but I really don’t have much to say analysis-wise! build god and then we’ll talk is still one of my fav songs off afycso, and sonically it’s definitely one of the most interesting songs panic! has ever put out—very happy to have finally made a piece to show my appreciation for the song :)
anyway that’s it byeeeeeeeeeeee!

exploring panic!'s a fever you can't sweat out/live in denver boxset
Tumblr media Tumblr media
a couple of years ago, i managed to snag this for $150, which is still crazy to me, and it's definitely my favorite thing i've ever owned. i feel like i haven't seen many people detailing the contents of it, and since it's such a cool relic, i wanted to share this beauty with everyone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it comes with the live in denver dvd (left) and a fever you can't sweat out cd (right). the cover art and discs are SO fucking pretty and cool i'm so obsessed with them. i love how it really feeds into that 20s/30s theme they had going on this era.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
then it has these 4 photo cards which are all such beautiful photos. the first one especially is one of my all time favorite panic photos. the b&w filter also fits this era so well.
Tumblr media
this is a phenakistiscope. you stand in front of a mirror and spin it around while looking through the cracks so it looks like the girl is dancing (instructions are included on the back).
Tumblr media
this is a tour program for the live in denver tour. it includes all the tour dates, as well as a guide to their discography. including pictures of the inside would exceed my image limit, so if anyone wants a post detailing this item, i'd be more than happy to post that!
Tumblr media
self explanatory but it's a mask reminiscent of the but it's better if you do music video.
Tumblr media
there's this SUPER cool poster that i'd love to hang up on my wall but i'm too scared to in case it ruins it. i'm actually so obsessed with this thing.
Tumblr media
this is something else i can't include detailed pictures of due to the image limit, but honestly there isn't a lot of lore or super interesting stuff inside of it. however, i'd still be happy to detail it more in another post.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there's this GORGEOUS notebook that i'm also too scared to actually do anything with. it is actually quite a thick notebook. i looove the detail of the "PANIC!" barely visible in the middle of the pages.
now onto my absolute favorite part of this thing:
Tumblr media
these cards for each song on fever are SO fucking cool and i love them so much. they're printed on really nice material too; they don't feel cheap and have this grainy feel to them too (idk how else to describe it) and it works so well. luckily i'm able to post individual pictures of each one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so the back of all of them have the lyrics printed like that but i won't be able to post pictures of that for each one.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
they just all encapsulate the theme of each song perfectly while also fitting so well with the aesthetic that they had this era. like my jaw dropped when i saw these for the first time. (side note: i'm not sure why they numbered intermission as number 12 when it should be 8 based on the album. i also don't know why they skipped introduction since they included intermission).
all in all, this is the coolest piece of merch a band has ever put out imo. like no one is doing it like this anymore. i'd been yearning for it since i was 14 so i'm so glad i was able to find it as such a steal of a price. i'll never shut up about owning it and if you're able to get your hands on it i cannot recommend it enough.
