[I.D. Two panel comic of original characters. In the first, Peri, a black girl with dreadlocks, throws her arms up in annoyance and says "Ugh, I can't believe they picked you over me! What do you have that I dont?!" She is wearing a long sleeve cream colored shirt with a green belt and pale green pants, and overall the outfit looks vaguely medieval or fantasy inspired. Behind her is Kalchas, a lighter skinned boy wearing a dark purple robe and a silver mask, and a small bird sitting on each shoulder. He responds "Tits." The robe has a grey hood and belt, as well as broad gray stripes on the shoulders, and the mask is designed to look like a bird's beak. In the second panel, Peri looks at Kalchas with confusion, an ellipse over her head. The eyes of his mask widen and he says "I meant the birds".]
(introduces some old ocs with a boob joke) dang I haven't drawn these guys in years, it was fun though
#original characters#original story#peri oc#kalchas oc#my ocs#might try doing more stuff with this story idk#i started it like five years ago so i'd probably have to overhaul it#my art#original world project

The fundamental difference between Epic’s Odysseus and Homer’s Odysseus is that while in Epic, “Monster” is sung after Odysseus traverses the underworld, in the Trojan war Odysseus chooses to be the “monster” the second he leaves Ithaka.
The man will do anything to return home with glory not after an exhaustive journey, but the second he is drafted into a war that he does not care about. It is the reason why he tells the Greeks of Kalchas’ oracle after the winds stop at Aulis. Killing Iphigenia is wrong, if course, but to Odysseus getting back home is far more important, in the same way that getting Helen back is more important to Menelaus. It (along with his previous hatred for the man) is the reason he kills Palamedes when he attempts to make the Greeks return home, and why he either kills Astyanax or pushes for a greek to kill him.
I think that this aspect of glory and pride that Odysseus has is not present in Epic’s Odysseus. He seeks glory to his name, perhaps due to the fact that Ithaka is a relatively unknown/weak kingdom during his time and he feels he needs to prove himself further. Meanwhile, Epic’s Odysseus, for example, reveals his name to Polyphemus due to his righteous anger after the death of his comrades, not so that the world will know it was he, Odysseus, king of Ithaka, that blinded the cyclops.
In summary, Epic The Musical’s Odysseus aims to return home causing as little damage as possible. He is forced to kill Astyanax by Zeus, and forced to reveal his name to the cyclops due to his rage and the death of his best friend. Meanwhile, Homer’s Odysseus will get home a glorious king no matter what he needs to do. He will kill essentially anyone in his way as long they pose a threat to his return and he won’t flat out die attempting to challenge them.
If “Monster” is sung in the Underworld Saga for Epic’s Odysseus, it would be the very first song in Homer’s Odysseus’ hypothetical musical.
I wouldn’t want this to be seen as hate by the way! I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Epic’s interpretation of Odysseus (I’ve been bangin out to the entire musical for a LONG time and it’s a big reason why my greek mythology phase came back), I just thought the two interpretations were really interesting!
Anyway, I’ll get back to animating “Luck Runs Out” now :)

It is annoying to see how youtubers who are dedicated to talking about mythology change several facts of the Trojan War when summarizing it or narrating it in a series of videos.
For example... Denying the "accident" of Palladium (going so far as to remove Diomedes), showing Helen as someone unaware of the war, about elevating Athena, denying the existence of Helenus (saying that the prophecies were told by the seer of the Greeks), denying the selfishness and crimes of Achilles, saying that Priam gave the crown to Dei (or to Paris) because he did not want to give it to Aeneas... Etc.
Things get worse when you look at the comments and find things like:
"Helena finally realizes it"
"Did Apollo support Paris? I expected more from him."
"Now I understand why Odysseus wanted the armor, it was not for him, he kept it for the son of Achilles"
"Hector was the only good thing about Troy"
"Apollo went too far with Achilles"
"Hahahaha the one who called Toilus wanted to troll Achilles"
(And yes, that last one was what bothered me the most)
The wide, "wonderful" world of people saying a lot of things about Greek myth and being sure they are entirely correct. :V Or just presenting things in a particular light.
(Definitely happens here on Tumblr, too.)
Those are some really weird ones, though! Why the hell would Priam ever have Aeneas as is heir lmao even when Hektor's dead he's got sooo many other sons still alive (with or without Paris and Deiphobos) so why would he give the crown to a pretty distant relation lol And poor Helenos getting his existence straight up denied even when he does have some independent myths? (Like, sure, there is at least one version where he doesn't get kidnapped so Kalchas is the one giving all the prophecies about how to make Troy fall but... that doesn't mean Helenos doesn't exist!)
Wonder how one could even imagine Helen not knowing there is a war. That's very ridiculous.
The Troilus one doesn't even make sense - like, what would even the original summary in the video to be for that comment to go "he wanted to troll him" like... what. Poor Troilus does deserve better.

Das hölzerne Pferd · Trojanischer Krieg · Griechische Sage · Odyssee Read the full article

CHORUS: Her prayers and cries of Father! her young life they reckoned at zero, those warloving captains. Her father said a prayer and bid them seize her high above the altar like a goat with her face to the ground and her robes pouring around her. And on her lovely mouth—
to check the cry that would have cursed his house— he fixed a bridle. Her robe fell to the ground. She cast a glance at each of her killers, like a figure in a painting speaking with her eyes, for she used to sing to them around her father's table. blessing their libation in her pure girl's voice—
what happened then I did not see and cannot tell. Let's just say Kalchas was no liar. Justice tops her scales so that we learn by suffering. But the future—who knows? It's here soon enough. Why grieve in advance? Whatever turns up, I hope it's happy—

If your characters were in the Hazbin Hotel universe, what area of the afterlife would they be in?
I'm gonna be honest, I've never watched Hazbin Hotel and I don't really intend to. It's not my kind of show. I'm vaguely aware that the structure of the afterlife is meant to be based on the nine circles of Hell from Dante's Inferno, which I've been reading lately, but I would assume that HH's version is based on centuries of cultural osmosis and not the actual Inferno from the little I know about the show.
And tbh based on the amount of AUs and OCs I have, I don't know which characters you would want me to put there anyway lol.
#asks#bambi's rambling#i mean i COULD attempt to do evaluations of the ninja turtle to see where they would go in Dante's afterlife#but that's largely intended as an allegorical or instructive narrative rather than a literal ''Hell is Like This'#also to figure that out i'd have to answer the question 'are the ninja turtles Christian when they die' bc thats foundational to dante lmao#but if by my characters you mean the ocs i posted recently peri and kalchas#they're from a fantasy world their afterlife is Very Different lol

I personally have my 12H in Virgo with Libra. I like to use asteroids to know about people and their talents. So if we speak about astrology and spiritual talents, you can check:
Kalchas (4138) (divination talents)
Horus (1924) (linked to 3rd eye)
Arrokoth (486958) (astrology talents)
Teller (5006) (Tarot abilities)
(for more asteroids about talents I suggest this amazing post)
For example, I have Kalchas Cancer 9H 3° conjunct my MC, so I could work with divination talents, and could gain more recognition for it in foreign lands. It can also means I'm good at analyzing stuff (literally what i'm doing now).
My Horus is in Pisces 5H 4°, literally meaning my 3rd eye is open, I am open to the world of spirituality, in the 5H my creativity will help me a lot with it, I see the signs of the universe in a very creative way.
My Arrokoth is in Sagittarius 3H 20°, meaning I learn a lot and I'm a hard working learner when it comes to this subject. I have a true thing for it, and the 3H here makes me prone to analyze astrology. The degree (scorpio) makes me want to solve the secrets of the universe, and find what is unknown.
My Teller is in Leo 10H 5°, conjunct my sun, North node and other fame asteroids (most of them are in my 10H), meaning I could totally become famous for it, it's a true path for my career, I could become very successful.
It can indeed tell a lot!

He comes up with the oath indeed to serve his purpose with which he also partially helps Tyndareous to save himself from a massive problem. In a way is a two bird one stone solution but when the time came to honor it things had changed; he had family and his life was set well. Quite frankly is like promising to someone "hey I shall come to war with you if war ever comes to your country" but in your heart you hope it never will be reality (and quite frankly Menelaus actually remembering the oath like come on hahahaha) But the "bunch of suitors die" were not just that like Odysseus was. They were thieves and were stealing everything eating their fill, harassing Penelope and plotting to kill his son. Like sure mass murder only shows how linked to war Odysseus is (even if he had the blessings of the gods for it) but tye situations are not exactly the same.
Also many heroes of that war needed persuasion. Even Thetis encouraged Achilles to avoid the war. Which is interesting given how many of the heroes acted so humanly with different ways to that war. Yes it is interesting how the inventor of the oath himself is probably the least eager to go but the thing is that you must add here is that Odysseus heard a prophecy that he wouldn't return from the war but in 20 years. I mean yeah you hear that you go and you shall not see them for 2 decades and you cannot say "no" directly bevause you are bound by the oath like damn well you will feel double panic hahahahahaha
The Iphigenia incident was created after homer which is interesting how many post-homeric sources depict Odysseus like a monster with no Morals. Like sure let us sacrifice a baby since my son is safe. Ironically in the actual Iliad it was Kalchas the one to get a direct order from gods to do it (similar to Abraham story in the bible). Many features sources say it was Odysseus to suggest it which does seem weird given that it was also him the one to be the diplomat to avoid the war in the first place trying to get Helen back without war.
More sources depict Neoptolemus as the murderer than Odysseus even in the Epic Cycle which is indeed interesting how in later sources Odysseus is depicted as the monster throwing babies off walls (or conspiring for doing so in Eurypedes) but Neoptolemus kinda left forgotten for the same role.
I think people need to think in what texts Odysseus is depicted so. Most of the sources come from 5th century onwards. It was a time of prosperity but also war for Greece. Greeks favored direct war choices and honor. Odysseus using wits and tricks to win wars was not to set a "good example" for the audience of the time so he was depicted sometimes as evil as possible to make sure that the young ones of the time wouldn't choose to use their brains over their honor hahaha
Also he is used as a symbol by poets for things that happen under the table at war; the side of war no one wants to talk about. The Roman times depict Odysseus either the same or totally evil because he is the reason Troy fell and traditionally Troy was the birthing place of Rome mythologically
The story version of Odysseus being the one to come up with the oath idea for whomever ended up as Helen's husband is one thing. It's another thing that he did it knowing her father would be so grateful to him for helping avoid a bunch of suitors dying in a brawl that he could have whatever he wanted as thanks. That thing being Penelope. It's another thing that just over twenty years later he would be the primary cause of the deaths of a bunch of suitors for the sake of (partially or mostly) Penelope.
It's another thing that despite coming up with the idea of the oath to Menelaus and backing out of the race for Helen in exchange for Penelope he still was beholden to it. It's another thing that he tries to duck out of the oath that he came up with by pretending to be mad when the Trojan War began. It's another thing that he dropped the lie in order to protect Telemachus, thus creating a scenario of saving his son to join the war (that he set the path for in order to get Penelope). It's another thing that Agamemnon has to sacrifice his daughter to join the war, a solution which was suggested by Odysseus. Thus we have a scenario where Odysseus begins his role in the Trojan War by saving a life (or more, if you count the suitors oath) only to then immediately advise Agamemnon take one.
It's another thing that one of the last acts of the war is Odysseus murdering a baby. He opens the war saving his child, ordering the death of another, and finally he ends his role in the war by murdering a final child.
It's another thing that Clytemnestra murders her husband for the death of their daughter. It's another thing that her cousin Penelope remains loyal to Odysseus in the years following the saving of Telemachus.
It's just... look the man has one priority and its him his country and his family and everyone else is a means to an end and frankly I appreciate that. He's a liar and a snake but at least everyone knows it.
