KalRen #18 for the kiss ask game!
I will write a kiss… 18. …as encouragement.
Kaladin/Renarin, rated General, 250 words, RoW spoilers
“Speaking of women, I think it’s unfair that women friends can kiss each other anytime and men friends can’t, like at all ever,” Skar slurred and leaned forward, pointing at no one in particular. “I think we should be able to say ‘Good job on that kata!’ and kiss your buddy.” Drehy’s hand shot out to push him upright again, so Skar wouldn’t fall into the fire. “You know there’s a way you can do that,” he grinned. “No shut up! I like women!” Skar protested, slapping his friend away. The others around the fire laughed. “No, you don’t see it like I do. I could start a revolution.” “There’s nothing in Arts and Majesty that says you can’t,” Lyn said. “All you’re up against is thousands of years of Vorin tradition...” “Vorin this, Vorin that!” Skar shouted at the stars. “Maybe we could do something different for a change! Storms!” Just then, Highmarshal Kaladin stepped up to the edge of their circle. “This isn’t about women in the military, is it?” he asked with a frown. He sat a few seats down from Skar, no doubt so he could keep an eye on him. Everyone giggled in embarrassment, grinning or biting their tongues. A few shamespren floated over the fire. Renarin saw his chance. He stood, then walked right up to Kaladin, putting a hand on his shoulder. “It's just about being a good friend,” he said. “Um, you did a great job teaching that kata today.” He leaned down and kissed him on the cheek, then walked away quickly, his cheeks burning, his heart racing, as the circle behind him erupted into hollers and cheers.

Pros and Cons of Stormlight Characters in the Middle Seat Next to You on a Budget Airline.
As requested by anon. :)
1. Kaladin
Cons: His legs are so long. His hair is so luxurious. His shoulders are so broad. This large, beautiful man is not trying to be in your space, but the budget airline seat cannot contain him. Pros: You started what you thought was an idle conversation, but by the end of your flight, he had diagnosed your chronic pain and become your therapist??
2. Shallan
Pros: Well, she's more of a regular-sized human and she's friendly but quiet. She seems to just want to sketch the whole flight, so no complaints! Cons: Why does she keep staring directly at a space across the plane and sketching the creepiest symbol-headed creatures you've ever seen with her eyes vaguely glazed over like she doesn't even know she's doing it holy shit is this a Twilight Zone situation where there are invisible gremlin monsters on this plane that only she can see and is it your imagination or do you hear humming from somewhere
3. Adolin
Cons: Listen, this is a budget airline, and this guy seems to think it's a fancy spa?? He's got the slippers, the posh eye mask, the luxurious travel pillow, some really nice face creams, and he seems to be video chatting with a girl even though the internet on the plane doesn't even work. Frankly, you're jealous and grouchy about it. Pros: Okay, he actually seems really sweet and he gave you some of his way-too-nice-for-an-airplane snacks. You take it all back; this guy is awesome.
4. Szeth
Pros: He is so still. So quiet. Almost folded in on himself. Barely...breathing? Honestly, you keep forgetting the middle seat is occupied, and how rare is that! Cons: You just...you think you'd feel better if he just blinked. Just once. Please.
5. Lift
Cons: You had to sigh just a little when a little kid plopped down next to you. Also, she goes to the bathroom every five minutes, and comes back with food every time. You think she might be robbing people. Pros: She complimented your butt quite sincerely. You've always been kinda self-conscious about your butt! But apparently yours is the "second best she's ever seen." Feels nice.
6. Jasnah
Pros: Like, is it possible for someone to just be really good at flying? She came in, expertly stowed her luggage, sat down elegantly, did her seatbelt, used a wipe to clean up the tray table and surrounding area, and immediately starting reading some thick tome. Do you have a crush on her? You might have a crush on her. Cons: She glanced at the book you're reading, and you know she judged you for it.
7. Wit
Cons: Does this guy EVER stop talking? Pros: Okay, actually, you found him kind of annoying at first, but that story he told you about the temple and the duck might have healed years of trauma? Did you just realize that you don't have to forgive your mom and that's okay?
8. Renarin
Pros: He sat down and you were like, "Okay. Cute nerd. I dig it." Cons: You just wish he wouldn't scrawl foreboding-seeming numerals on the back of the airline chair in front of him. Is it counting down to...just before the plane lands? What does it mean???
9. Amarem
Cons: He came in and was IMMEDIATELY like, "I am taller than you and so I should have your seat." And then he just...waited? Like he thought you'd just comply??? Pros: He seems intent on pretending that never happened. Fine by you. That guy seems like an asshole.
10. Zahel
Pros: He falls asleep, like, immediately and doesn't stir for the entire flight. Cons: He's just kinda stinky.
11. Dalinar
Cons: He sits down and, unprompted, says something like, "In my youth I would always battle to occupy every armrest but now, after reading The Way of Planes, I have realized that it is the journey, not the armrests, that matter, so you can have them" and then you're like, "Dude, the person in the middle seat gets the armrests that's just common courtesy" and then he looks at you and you look at him and it's vaguely awkward the whole flight and nobody uses the armrests. Pros: Actually, after a while you do take the armrest and the tension goes down a lot.
12. Taravangian
Pros: He just kinda seems like a nice old man, you know? Kinda confused about stuff, but harmless enough. Cons: He falls asleep partway through and droops his head onto your shoulder and drools a bit and you know you sound ridiculous but it feels somehow calculated. Intentional. Evil.
13. Sebarial
Cons: The very second beverage service starts he's all, "Bring me a BOTTLE of wine" and you're like, "Oh no. It's one of those dudes who gets way too drunk on planes!" Pros: You know? This guy actually seems pretty jolly and chill. You catch yourself thinking, "I wish I could pretend he was my uncle." You're not sure where that came from.
14. Rock
Pros: He scoffs at the provided airline snacks and gets out this thermos and gives you the best damn soup you've ever had in your life. Cons: He's just a large, warm man. Very large. Very warm. Not his fault, of course, but now YOU are very warm.
15. Elhokar
Cons: Every time there is plane turbulence, he mutters something about how it's the assassins coming to finish the job. Poor dude must be really scared of flying. Pros: You feel a warm, parental feeling growing in you as you look at this sad, scared man. Maybe your mom was right. Maybe you WOULD be good with kids.
16. Eshonai
Pros: This lady is, just, SO excited to be traveling that it can't help but make YOU excited to travel. Like, you always thought plane travel sucked, especially budget airline travel, be she is so delighted by everything that you find yourself thinking, "You know, it IS pretty amazing that we're soaring through the sky right now traveling to a new land." Cons: Cons? No cons. You wish you could ALWAYS see flying through this woman's eyes.

Dumb: Not specifying exactly the number of people you wanted to duel, and then having to duel four people
Dumber: Jumping in to help out with said duel, but wearing no armor while wielding a sword that won’t stop screaming
Dumbest: Helping win said duel, but then using that win to challenge one of your boss’s most trusted friends to a duel while accusing him of murder and theft that no one believes he did

taken me ages but behold archive karecktors
adolin and maya beloved but also the most time consuming because i had to figure out how the hell i was going to do adolin's hair and not hate looking at it, and maya took me forever to figure out the colours lol. looked at so many references trying to figure out what dead vines should look like and what i would like it to look and i couldnt really find what i wanted lol. but what i went for was like really dried out and very very dead looking fibre. that wasnt too bad but trying to figure out her clothes that would look decent before and after she becomes a deadeye was hell for me an amateur colour theory understander lmao
i have drawn shallan before so she wasn't too difficult but i was truly torn about which version of pattern i wanted to show?? so i did a few of them hahah. i did a canon compliant version, alluding a bit to BE NOT AFRAID angel vibes. but im pretty passionate about ferrofluid-looking pattern as thats what i picture in my head (but i couldnt really find a good reference so i couldnt really do it well. it's also like, about the way it moves more than a still frame so extra challenge). and if you've seen my shallan art you know i. asdlkfjh. i originally pictured pattern as a QR code so i was compelled to continue it. @mistbjorn this one's for you because youre so right <3
syl i usually picture similar to kida in disney's atlantis when she merges with the crystal and you can see her scalp beneath her transparent hair, so thats the inspo for her. for the sylspear i designed it to look a bit like a caduceus as homage to kaladin's medical training and his dad, and like it's not that deep but i guess the swirly glowy bits are his duality and being torn between two worlds etc etc or you can just picture spren zipping about if you want lol like i definitely pictured syl was one but the other makes no sense
the kholins i dont have much to say since they were not part of my original plan hahaha but i couldn't help adding them too. i lowkey struggled to make them unique but also similar because family alksdjfhs i was sketching this around a time i did a lot of face studies so it was so whack and the colouring absolutely killed me so it is what it is asldkjaklsdjf

i just finished words of radiance and my dudes this is probably the best fantasy book I’ve ever read
points about it:
. okay so mr kaladin “honor is dead but i’ll see what i can do” stormblessed carried this book, he is becoming one of my all time favorite characters
. my bestie shallan working the oathgate? revealing to dalinar that she is one of the radiants? i love her honesty
. my boy adolin killed sadeas, finally that slimy rat got what he deserved
. renarin????? truthwatcher????? i knew he was going to be important, i’m so happy for him
. moash my dude, i’m disappointed
. dalinar bonding with the stormfather, you go bondsmith!!
. the whole parshendi summoning the everstorm part was so freaking good
. kaladin saving everyone while revealing he’s radiant, not going to lie. i’ve cried a bit at that part
final consideration:
it is certainly one of the best fantasy books out there, sanderson manages to build the world and the characters so well. can’t wait for what oathbringer has in store for me.

My friend is reading WoR and I reread the duel chapter and had this thought: One of the guys trying to cripple Adolin in a full disadvantage duel: "This isn't about Honor. This is about Punishment." Adolin seeing Kaladin approach: "My brother in Honor, you are completely correct. Punishment has just entered the ring. But NOT FOR ME!"

the light eyes don't spend enough time apologizing to bridge four for the bridges. like i respect dalinar and adolin and renarin and jasnah for the changes they make, but they should be on their knees repenting for those mistakes. instead they just point out to kaladin how fucked up he is while continually asking him to take on more responsibility. they treat him like a person when he is functioning and don't really deal with him when he is not, despite the fact that their fucked up system is why functioning is so difficult for so many of bridge four. idk, i know they are trying their best but it has real capitalist boss energy, like they are inconvenienced by the trauma inflicted by sadeas and when anyone asks for acknowledgement or reparations the best they come up with is that they can't go back and that there are more pressing matters at hand.
i want one of them to one time set aside their problems and try to meet any of the bridge crews where they are, to listen for one moment to the suffering that happened. even if they are not directly responsible, they need to start interrogating the system of privilege that let something so horrible happen. might help them in their debates over how to handle the parshendi if they acknowledged that their lifestyle has always been built upon the suffering of others
when someone is competent they are just expected to keep being competent, regardless of what has made them that way, and i think that there is cruelty in that. i want dalinar to take one second to not be the bondsmith, looking toward the future, and instead be a human, and sit with his men, and just listen

Hello! Can we get Kaladin/Renarin for #9 in the ask game?
Well this turned into a fun surprise! Last year I wrote a little public indecency Kalarin fic called Nothing Left to Ruin (rated Mature, 3500 words), so I wrote this ficlet as a continuation!
I will write a kiss… 9. …in public.
Rated Teen, 1000 words, Kaladin/Renarin, WoR era AU.
Renarin knew he was going to lose this duel. It wasn’t even close. Halam Khal wasn’t highly ranked, but he was ranked. Renarin had never fought an official duel before, and the screaming from his Shardblade didn’t help his concentration at all. But he had realized something. This wasn’t about winning the duel. It wasn’t about proving himself to his father, or about following in his brother’s footsteps. This was Renarin’s debut as a lighteyes, showing the world what kind of man he would try to be.  So he fought poorly, but he fought honourably. He fought with bravery. He fought through the screaming, through the echoes of his father’s disappointment, through his own insecurity. As he fought, he felt stronger. They would all see he wasn’t afraid to get hit. He could, and would, take a beating without flinching. No matter how many times he got knocked down, he would keep standing. Resetting his stance, readying himself again. Taking another hit. Now his Plate was cracked in tens of places, and his helm had shattered, leaving his head exposed. There was sand in his mouth from getting knocked onto his face. His Plate was getting heavy. It was getting harder and harder to get back up. Still, his heart was racing with excitement. The action, the risk, was everything he’d wanted. He stood again and reset his stance, but not in time. Khal's Shardblade struck his shoulder, slid up his pauldron, and smashed against his gorget, which just barely stopped it from slicing through his neck. Renarin saw purple fearspren bubble up by Khal’s feet. He hadn’t meant to get so close; he was an honest fighter, but accidents still happened.  Taking an unsteady step sideways, Renarin glanced towards the preparation rooms and saw Kaladin by the entrance, gripping his spear with white knuckles.
Keep reading (since Tumblr isn't letting me post this for some reason idk)

there more i think about it the more i realize that one of the main themes in the series is guilt and shame and how to redeem yourself even though what you did is (subjectively or objectively) unforgiveable. how can you live with yourself knowing that what you caused can never be undone?

Stormlight Characters, is the glass half empty or half full?
Ah, the age-old debate! How would Stormlight characters answer such a question?
1. Renarin & Adolin
Renarin: ... Renarin: It depends on the context, doesn't it? Renarin: If you pause halfway through filling a glass, it is half full, but if you pause halfway through emptying a glass, it's half empty. Renarin: It doesn't seem like it's a question you can answer in isolation...right? Adolin: Oh, it's half full for sure! Renarin: ... Adolin: What?
2. Moash & Kaladin
Moash: Half empty. For me. Moash: Half empty for any darkeyes. Moash: Half full for lighteyes, of stormin' course. Moash: 'Cause that's how the world works, isn't it, Kaladin? Kaladin: Mine's half full. Moash: ... Kaladin: They didn't say what it was full of. Moash: Ha! Is it full of-- Kaladin: Full of shit, yeah.
3. Jasnah & Shallan
Jasnah: I think it is rare for something to ever truly be halfway anything. Jasnah: Look closely enough, and it will be more full or more empty, and then you'll have the truth. Jasnah: What do you think, Shallan? Shallan: I think it's both at once. Jasnah: ...Is that a philosophical statement or is it a Lightweaver answer? Shallan: Yes.
4. Pattern & Design
Pattern: Mmmmm, what a human question! Pattern: The answer is always a lie, but always true. Design: They can just count the molecules, can't they? Pattern: But they won't! Pattern: Also probably they can't! Design: Humans are so fascinating. So silly. Pattern: Mmmmmm yes!
5. Navani & Raboniel
Navani: I don't think there's any "empty" at all, technically. Navani: Half full of a liquid, half full of air, totally full in combination. Navani: No scientist gets anywhere by ignoring half of what is present. Raboniel: And with the right technique, air and water can be mixed. Raboniel: So acting like they're separate ignores the possibilities. Navani: Exactly!
6. Dalinar & Sadeas
Dalinar: Half empty. Never forget what was lost. Sadeas: Half full. What matters is how much you have. Dalinar: Shall we disagree on this point in steely determination forever? Sadeas: Obviously.
7. Szeth and Lift
Szeth: Mine is half full. Szeth: But only because others are weak and cannot take the contents of my glass from me. Szeth: I have emptied many glasses. Szeth: Why can't anyone empty mine? Lift: Who's got time to stare at a glass?? I'm drinking that down as soon as I got it, if it's edible! Szeth: There is wisdom in that. Lift: Thanks. Yours was just kinda sad. Szeth: Yeah.
