it's funny, how easily they fall back into old habits   —   and how easily they melt together. he's aware that maybe he forgives and lets go too easily when it comes to her, but he never really wonders if that matters, because he knows it will happen again anyways. and maybe it's because he misses those days too, where she'd say let's leave and he'd already be packing the car, ava bouncing between their laps in the earliest days and begging for pitstops in the later ones. when it was just them versus the world, armed with a desire to survive. she shifts to look at him, and hand moves to trace her cheek and tuck stray hair behind her ear. it's pure instinct when he does it, and he holds her cheek gently. they both know she's beautiful, but as he gazes at her now he wonders if she knows he sees more than her physical beauty. head shifts on pillow as he nods. “  really.  ”

the winter air spills beneath doors and windowsills, infesting her home with an unbearable cold. it ghosts against the bronze skin exposed, sending a shiver down her spine, prickling her arms. she keeps the duvet just above her shoulders, and she melts against the warmth of him: nimble fingers like icicles, but cheeks flushed. if she could escape the world altogether, california damned, she'd stay right here. through january, february, march … until spring, when snow would thaw and flowers bloom. monopolising his attention and heat, forgetting those beyond the threshold of her bedroom door, and all the problems that come with.

  kai often indulged her.

her whims, and her wants. still, it's been years since he'd last played along. since she'd been granted a no questions asked, yet another town left in the rearview. they'd be back this time, she knew that, but it's all too reminiscent of when all she had was him, her daughter, and that broken down truck.

  maybe odette longs after the past after all.

drowsy now, she hoists herself up: a touch staying where is, curved against the slope of his ribs, and she looks at him. big browns traversing features never to be forgotten … from the permanent 5 o'clock shadow, all the way to the arch of his nose and a childhood scar, settling on intense blues. he's always been beautiful.

  〝 really? 〞 brick by brick, that towering wall comes apart, and she almost smiles.

“ i'd never dream of accusing you of that, ” he says with a wry smile, as she inches closer. It's comforting, and nice, to be this close to her, this casually. He relishes in the familiarity of it, the relaxed nature of them both. lightly he takes her hands in his, squeezing gently at her words   —   flashing what he knows is that trademark charming smile of his. tone joking, he teases “ i'm not sure you'd be able to, even if you wanted. ”

if kai wasn't there, she imagines she'd get there herself, one way or another. but in true odette fashion, she resigns when it gets tricky, and she passes the burden along. only now, they're not in a situation quite so heavy, and it's predictability feels more comforting than embittered.

  〝 i'm not going to take advantage of you, kai. 〞  cheeky, and shoulder to shoulder, odette somehow finds a way to get even closer.

liquored up, walls often loose their footing, a guarded woman becomes one not so. an apprehension dismissed in favour of familiarity … because it's an image reminiscent of the one from years ago. before they made that leap, before they crashed and burned. and it fuels her more than it deters.

I literally cried when i read this chap... i had to take off my headphones and bluelight glasses and plop down on my bed to comprehend what I just read....

The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen- If you haven't read this book, please do it now, it is amazing! It is about a Vietnamese American family telling stories to each other alongside the events of their lives.

10/10, one of my favorite books of the year!

Tea Dragon Society by Kay O'Neill- This series is so sweet and the epitome of cottagecore fantasy! Filled with little dragons, found family, and beautiful pictures!

10/10, a feel good book of mine

Sleepless by Sarah Vaughn, Leila del Duca, Alissa Sallah- Has anyone done bodyguard romance this well? No, they have not. A lovely romance at the center and lots with court intrigue.

9/10, a swoonworthy romance fantasy!

Fangs by Sarah Anderson- Who hasn't wanted a romance between a vampire and a werewolf? Low stakes and adorable.

8/10, a super quick ad satisfying read

Trickster: Native American Tales, A Graphic Collection- A collection of short stories by various writers and artists about the many tricksters from the various cultures.

7.5/10 full of tricks and stories

The Old Guard by Greg Rucka- A little too gory for my taste, but as someone who loved the movie, I really enjoyed seeing the material it was adapted from!

7/10 action packed and emotional

The Girl from the Sea by Molly Knox Ostertag- An adorable sapphic romance with a selkie as the love interest!! Super lovely!

7/10 a darling love story
