As a kid I have always been VERY mad about the fact that Lloyd just popped up and stole Kai’s main character role. And to be honest, I still am. Kai is hotheaded and selfish when it comes to being the green ninja and stuff but overall he always played the big brother/parent role for the others. When Garmadon couldn’t, Kai took care of Lloyd. He supported Jay and Nya and helped Cole. In my opinion Kai will forever stay the true main character of Ninjago.

MY NINJAGO DESIGNS (UPDATED)

Ok FIRST OF ALL!!! follow me on tiktok and AO3!! I'm posting my art there and I have a fanfic project centered on Nya (and Morro) that I started writing, I think you might be interested!

Secondly..... YES! After less than a week of posting the first designs, I decided to change some things!!!!! If you compare it to the old post you'll see that there weren't any very drastic changes, but there were a few things that were particularly bothering me and now I feel like I'm satisfied (for now.....)

Obviously, as you can see, I haven't changed a lot of things. Maybe I shouldn't have made this update in a new post, changing the main one would have been more than enough but.... nah.

Colors of the gold armor - I gave them a brighter tone, the old one was very dull

Zane and Nya's boots - brother wtf were those, now they are sooo much better

Zane gloves - I totally forgot about them in the first version, but now he has them!!

Kai and Nya eyes - in the old version they already had matching eyes (main color in their own color palette and pupil in the color of their siblings), but I made Nya's eye color more towards gray and Kai's towards brown, instead of the dark -cyan-almost-green and amber that they had)

Nya's hair and sleeves - I left her hair a little closer to her original hair, I felt that in the old one I ended up giving her a hairstyle more similar to mine in real life..... oops? I also changed the flowing sleeve to a more well behaved one similar to Kai's, I don't know if I totally like this change to be honest

Marks on their body - Lloyd now has marks from the oni transformation!! although they are not that visible from far; Nya and Cole's marks are better done than before and Zane has more robot features (although these three in particular are more visible under his clothes *wink wink*)

Jay has goggles now :D

So I guess this is it? NOW I'm gonna leave these designs alone. I already posted on my tiktok too, so if you can stop by and give me a boost I'd really appreciate it!! I'm already working on the individual images of each one with some headcanons and more specifications on the details of each one's designs, but it will probably take a while. I also plan to do a part two of the designs with some secondary characters, but that totally depends on my willingness and willpower LOL

Underrated part about Ninjago is how they use EVERY opportunity for character interactions.

It’s not just limited to casual scenes where “Okay it’s time for these two characters to talk and bond”

There is almost never a moment in the show where the characters, especially the leads, are just standing there. There’s always some sort of interaction going on, even if it’s minor.

Action scene? There’s still banter.

Exposition dump? There’s still banter.

It’s a small thing, but one that sells the main characters bond as a team that much more. It also makes scenes boring on paper feel memorable in viewers mind.

There’s usually someone making fun of someone’s bad puns. Or just each other. That’s why most of Kai’s roasts on Jay and his sister for example are quotable.

There’s usually something going on in the background. Like when Lloyd and Nya are talking about their plan to face the Ice Emperor, there’s the others in the background getting assaulted by a hammock.

Even in what should be a dry scene about plot exposition, there’s some sort of interaction happening. Kai being high on snake venom. Jay interrupting a backstory to question the wording. Nya nagging Cole’s babysitting tactics and Jay stabbing Kai’s hand with a fork.

Take other shows where the large cast of characters are just standing there and/or just talking about the exposition and nothing else. Not that they would never interact, it’s usually just scenes that are designed specifically for interaction.

Not only does it make Ninjago more fun, but it also makes the bond between this decent sized lead cast feel real.

Race, Live-Action Casting, and Ninjago

I'll start by saying something everyone can agree on.

No Chris Pratt.

Now that's out of the way I want to state my purpose for this rant. It's to spark discussion. I want to hear other people's ideas and perspectives. I'm one Asian American out of literal billions. I know after typing everything out I'll feel bad, but this feels like a discussion the fandom needs to address. Every perspective is worth considering and thinking through.12

I'm not worried about the casting. Warner Bros. is a big studio that doesn't want any negative press. At least, Kai and Nya are going to be Asian. I'm worried about the other Ninja, mainly Lloyd. But I think the studio doesn't want to be cancelled, so that's not my number one worry. My number one worry is Garmadon. If Garmadon is in the movie, will his skin be literally black? his can be sidestepped if Garmadon isn't included period. But the Hagemans love their emo dad. Still, I don't want blackface Garmadon.

My theory is the casting will have a similar model to what Avatar did in it's live action. There were white voice actors, now they're played by a diverse cast. Kiawentiio is amazing, but not as tan as Katara was in the animated series. (That's a discussion within itself) There was a controversy with Ian Ousley. I'm not going to get into those topics, but they did happen.

However, the worry for many comes from the fact Ninjago is more racially ambiguous than Avatar: The Last Airbender. Almost all the characters-with exceptions being the Water Tribes and Sun Warriors-are Asian. Avatar: The Last Airbender has characters with a variety of skin tones and facial features. Ninjago has almost all of it's characters with yellow skin. Which is typical for LEGO, but feels iffy in an Asian inspired world. The fact everyone has yellow skin lends to an almost race blind world. However, names come from countries. Completely human characters have blond/ginger hair. Lloyd and Master Wu have blond hair. Master Wu is especially weird because he has the aesthetic of the Hollywood wise old Asian martial arts teacher there to help the protagonist. But he's blond.

In a cartoon I can suspend my disbelief. In the show I can't see facial features. Everyone in Ninjago has the same eyes, unless if you're a robot, one of the very few women, or Lloyd. I can live with this in an animated show from the 2010s.

In live action films, there are close-up shots. People will stand next to each other. I know what real life people look like when I'll see the movie. This shouldn't matter to me. I shouldn't care so much, but the history of whitewashing roles in media is too vast. We interpret the world through race.

White is the default in the US. Examples being Ghost in the Shell Warriors TV series. Asian roles for media set in Asia for Asian roles are cast by white people with white people since 1961.

What I want to know is the world of the live action going to be Asian inspired? And the better question: should it?

I don't know.

Ninjago since day 1 has had a tenuous at best relationship with race. It is clearly in an Asian inspired world. Everyone knows Ninjas come from Japan. However, it's just an aesthetic.

The worldbuilding is very Western. If we compare to Avatar again, there is no use of any Asian philosophy in Ninjago. Avatar is chalked full of allusions to Buddhism and Japanese Imperialism. But, Avatar is a more well thought out show than the show where one of the main characters gets sent into another dimension and becomes evil, violates the Geneva convention then is given no acknowledgement and I hate it.

Ninjago when giving us culture that seems Asian inspired to me fails spectacularly. (The Kabuki from Chen's Island. That's a Tumblr rant within itself) The most obvious example being the yin and yang marriage proposals. They have Google! The writers could've gone down an internet rabbit hole for a variety of cultures. But we have this clumsy, "Will you be the Yin to my Yang?" It's stupid and I hate it.

However, Ninjago in the Wildbrain era started to move away from the Asian aesthetic. One could make the argument it started in Rebooted, but I'm saying Wildbrain era to keep this post short. We go to a pyramid in Secrets of Forbidden Spinjitzu. We meet the Ice people from the Never Realm which I think are inspired by the Inuit. I'm not too sure.

Dragon's Rising has done away with any resemblance to Asian culture. Sora is Japanese name, so maybe? But all the resemblance is from the old show. It's a fantasy show. They are a soft reboot. They could make their dragons look like literally anything in this soft reboot and they stick to the Western style ones. It's this big fantasy world, why am I not seeing any allusions Asian folklore?

But can't I blame Ninjago when they fumble so hard when they try. It's a lose lose situation. But research isn't worth it. Is a culture too inconvenient to even research? Because everything seems absorbed from other pieces of American media. Yin Yang has nothing to do with marriage-at least to my knowledge. It has to do with Daoism. There is no research or attempt. The show hasn't done a legitimate attempt in it's full run and that's sad.

We're seeing that when the Hageman brothers write they don't shy away from the Asian aspects of the world. Or maybe there was less understanding of Asian representation when the show first aired so they could do whatever they wanted. (And Wildbrain and Dragons Rising are more popular so have higher stakes if they fuck up too bad) This is racist, but it isn't coming from hatred. It's coming from ignorance. If this came from hatred why make a show about ninjas?

The Hageman brothers have demonstrated ignorance in their writing. I've been saying Asian instead of specific countries because everything is so monolithic in the show. It would be amazing to have this world for a big franchise shown to kids around the globe. (Especially to Americans who might not watch a show with an authentic cultural world if it didn't tie to Ninjago) But that's not going to come from them. It's never going to come from them.

Authentic Asian representation was lost when the writers were picked. I have no doubt there'll be sensitivity readers, but there'll most likely be a cultural erasure. I'm not mad at the Hagemans. I'm not even mad at Hollywood. But I'm disappointed in Warner Bros.

Dr pt2 spoiler warning

This was a fantastic set of episodes

• Kai and wyldfire are everything. Kai having to deal with someone who acts like he did in the earlier seasons is poetic justice and funny as hell.

• I also like how they kinda tried to explain why Kai seemed calm after sea bound and nyas seaifcation. I guess Kai meditating with wu would make him calmer. At least it confirms that Kai was upset (even if they didn’t show it)

•I am kinda upset that nothing from skybound was brought up with the Djinn. I personally don’t really like skybound but I still find that it could be used more than just oh yah that happened right wink wink. I mean we had to suffer through skybound for something right?

• I actually really liked sora and nyas whole plot with the Djinns curse. It was fun and had a nice conclusion.

• Coles return is great I love his little gang in the land of forgotten things. My favorite has to be the skeleton girl (I forgot her name probably cuz they only say it like 2 times) she’s funny.

• I do wish there was a scene where nyas like btw I found Cole and the other ninja react. I mean she does mention it at the end but no one except Zane has any real reaction.

• Beatrix going off the rails was really funny. It felt like someone gave a teen with daddy issues an insta death weapon.

• rapton switching sides kinda came out of left field for me. Like the guy isn’t the brightest bulb in the box I think it would be more likely for other characters to switch sides. Also how did he recover from being tased so quickly? Man was out cold and not two minutes later he was up and walking around.

• kinda felt that the whole being sucked into non existence should have had more lasting effects (totally not because I want to traumatize or brutally injure Kai no why would I want that /s) tho fake out deaths are pretty par for the course with ninjago, this one actually didn’t make me feel all that much cuz I knew the moment wyldfire got pulled in that this was a fake out. They wouldn’t kill one of there new characters that quickly.

•so wus just legitimately fudging dead. Never thought we would see the day when this old mad would just peace out. Also ghost wu legit looks like he’s slowly loosing his form or something cuz in the first half he appears with his full body but in the last scene he’s in he’s just a chest and a head. It might have just been a stylistic thing tho.

•I’m not mad jay only showed up for around 30 seconds (this just might be my bias tho cuz jays probably the ninja I care the least about, not that I hate him or anything he’s just not that interesting to me) it’s kinda refreshing for me cuz nya gets to be her own character for a bit and not be completely attached to Jay and Jay gets to take up less screen time (if I am being honest Jay had so much focus in the wild brain seasons it kinda got annoying to me personally) idk if he’s actually lost his memories or if that leak is wrong cuz it would make sense cuz he has not searched for the ninja (specifically nya cuz that man is a simp for his gf) Arin missing him by a second is hilarious to me.

•not sure about how I feel about Lloyd being the linchpin for the entire thing. Part of me thinks that it would have fit the shows themes better if all of them used their elemental powers or something else to power the cores to fix everything. But another part of me understands that Lloyd get main character privileges cuz he’s the son of ninjago god.

•still kinda frustrated that they are changing how elemental powers work. Originally they were from the first spinjitzu master, but the whole source dragon being the source (for lack of a better word) of the elemental powers, it completely retcons and nerfs the first spinjitzu master. It would have made more sense if they still came from the powers of the fsm and were gifted through the source dragons to people.

•the implication of the cursed realm merging with the rest of the realms brings up the question if the departed realm merged to? Does that mean no one can die??? Or is there some sort of force that still keeps the departed realm separated from the rest (like how the people in the land of the forgotten can’t leave) or can some dude just wander in to the departed realm and see like there dead grandma chilling with the fsm having tea or some crap like that.

•Lloyd going I forgot there are two of them now towards Kai and wyldfires antics is peak writing. And all the arson and explosions the two created is just beautiful.

•I think the Kai and wyldfire duo should be called like the arsonist or the kaboom duo

•THE HUGGG!!!! My boi was so happy looking when the tackle hug was done.

•I just cant get my brain to shut up about these two. They give off tired dad who sometimes gives in to his old chaotic ways he’s sworn he’s grown out of and living embodiment of chaos and fun daughter who drags her dad into crazy things.

Tdlr I loved this second half and had a few issues with it but it was still really good.

Argh I’m so happy, they finally gave Cole a family outside of the ninja team because let’s be real Cole was kinda sidelined for ages he needs a nice family of people who respect him and also he needs a hot purple boyfriend to look after him!

Lloyd isn’t an npc, he’s a human being with flaws?? Like actual? Logical? Flaws? He’s not just a main character anymore?? His flaws aren’t even super annoying either. And like CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW FUNNY IT IS THAT TIKTOK AND YOUTUBE CANONICALLY EXIST? THE NINJA ARE LIKE, TUMBLR SEXYMEN??? IN THE LEGO UNIVERSE?? THATS SO FUNNY, WHAT?

all the jokes feel like actual people talking, the writing feels natural for the first time in years! Zane isn’t constantly abused, he’s happy and frog man is the best character and if Lego doesn’t immediately release mini figures for frohicky and all the other minor characters that are pretty important I’m going to Sue.

also I haven’t watched the next episode but if it doesn’t explain what happened with Zane to end up with a frohicky plushie I’m going to go ballistic, alright?

Hot take but I’m glad Jay isn’t there anymore ik he’s probably going to come back but he’s honestly the worst ninja nowadays. And also, KAI CHARACTER ARC FIXED??

-the fight scenes? crazy. insane. love them.

-lloyd having panic attacks because of his visions is so real. hes destiny's fav and also he's their biggest hater.

-gandalaria is an icon whom i love. shes so goofy and silly and the scene looking for the potion after bonzle got captured was silly and killed the tension a tad, but PUPPY COLE. he was a pupy...

-sora helping arin to raise his spirits and keeping it a secret is actually good imo. i really hope theres not a soul shattering scene in pt 2 where she tells him she did it! (pleasepleaseplease dont make this happen i might cry actually)

-kai surpassing everyone and learning basic rising dragon was a good idea. he was the original main character before lloyds arc.

Overall thoughts: holy SHIT!!! I genuinely didn't think Dragons Rising would keep my interest like it has. I've watched this fuckass show since I was like 11, and by GOD they're keeping it real. The fight scenes are beautifully animated, they're keeping the characterization as close to normal as possible (of course there will be differences, no one can deny it). The story is enthralling and I really, REALLY love it.

can we get cole introducing geo to jay when he comes back as his bf to confirm all of our "suspicions" (they are dating. i dont care) but pleasepleaseplease im begging. don't keep us in the dark ninjago team

"You're doing very well, Yumi!" Garmadon's smile blinds her, but she doesn't mind, too happy to hear this compliment. "It's great you're getting more control of the Dream element."

"But, Master..." Yumi interrupts. "I'm still bothered by nightmares where you're gone, and I don't know what to do... They feel so real... And so painful..."

She sighs heavily. These nightmares have become her second life, and that hurts.

"Well, I think it's your last test from the Dream," Garmadon replies with kind smile. "You should choose which world you belong."

Yumi looks carefully at Sensei's face, and the feeling of hope lifts her spirit. If she has to fight nightmare, pain and suffering so everybody can live peacefully, free from sorrows and violence... She wiil do her best.

"So, what do you choose?"

"I choose eternal happiness."

Kai goes through the traning course, punching, kicking dummies and shooting them with fireballs. However, the last strike misses. He turns off the mechanism with a tired sigh.

"How's it going?" Yumi suddenly appears behind his back.

"AAAAH!" Kai screams and almost jumps away. "Ugh... You can't sneak and scare people like that!"

"Sorry." She smiles calmly. "So, how's your training?"

Kai looks at dummies and shrugs it off. "Eh, as usual..."

"But you look tired," Yumi notices.

"Maybe I've lost my fit a bit, but that's okay, I can deal with it." Girl stares at Kai, so intently that he starts to worry about it. "Um, what? Is something wrong with my hair?"

"No, I just think I can help you," she smiles again.

"You?" Kai raises his eyebrow in confusion. "I thought you didn't like combat training."

"Oh, I don't need to fight you. I've learnt a new technique to strengthen you," Yumi stretches out her hand. "Do you want to give it a try?"

"Hm... Sure, why not!" Kai gets kind of interested in her progress, so he gives a hand.

Yumi closes her eyes, and Kai feels how the energy fills his body. Weariness leaves him, he feels completely fresh and renewed. The Red Ninja makes a hit in the air and release a burst of fire, the strongest he's ever seen.

"Wow! What a feeling!" he laughs and destroys the annoying dummy on his way. "I've never felt so energetic!"

"Hey, can you be quiet?! I'm trying to-" Jay, who came out to complain, breaks off in mid-sentence, amazed. "Woah, that's so cool! How are you doing that?"

Yumi turns to him with the same calm smile.

"Do you want to try this technique of mine too?"

As Cole closes the fridge door and turns back, he almost drops his portion of snacks out of surprise.

"Hi, Cole," Yumi doesn't even move, smiling calmly.

"I've learnt some stealth recently."

"That's... That's good to hear," Cole smiles, however, he feels something weird. "Hey, I can't help but notice that you look better... I mean, you finally seem chill again as you were, well, before all the events."

Yumi remains silent and staring.

"Thank you," Yumi replies. "I'm happy to hear it."

Cole grabs a snack and eats it, but doesn't get satisfaction.

"Something's wrong?" girl immediately asks.

"Eh, it's just not the same..." Cole sighs with frustration. "It's a hard time for Chen's Noodle House so their food is... So tasteless. Skylor promised to fix that, but for now I have to deal with-"

"Let me help you," Yumi interrupts and stretches out her hand closer to Cole's face. "My new ability will help you to feel the whole spectrum of tastes and even more."

"Uh, what? When have you learnt this trick?" Cole slightly moves away from her hand.

"That doesn't matter, friend. Kai and Jay have already tested it... And they're happy. Don't be afraid, let me help you."

"Okay... But only this time."

"Hey, Yumi, have you called me?" Lloyd enters the room and sees Yumi who leans on a sofa back. She looks at him with relaxed smile.

"I want to talk with you," she replies and makes a gesture to come closer. Lloyd makes a few steps and then notices Kai, Jay and Cole sleeping on the sofa.

"Huh... That's strange of them to sleep in the middle of the day," the Green Ninja notes.

"They've got tired of training so they're taking a nap now," Yumi slightly pats Cole's head. "Look, you know I had hard times... Everything was a mess..."

Lloyd looks carefully at Yumi as she talks. Something disturbs him, something surreal in details of her appearance. She let her hair down, though she always ties it up in two buns. There's no sign of bags under eyes, but it's too early for them to completely disappear. Her movements are very slow, and her eyes don't look at Lloyd... Yumi looks through him, right into his soul.

"But a miracle happened... I saw him."

"Who?.." Lloyd asks in confusion.

"Sensei Garmadon. Our mentor. Your father."

Yumi smiles, and an uncanny feeling strikes Lloyd.

"W-what?.. You must be joking, this is nonsense..." he mumbles.

"This is real, Lloyd!" Yumi sounds excited. "I meet your father in my dreams! My element has finally started to help me! And this way... Garmadon taught me how to control dreams!"

Lloyd sees a tone of craziness in her look.

"Look at our friends, Lloyd! They're happy thanks to Dream! Isn't it wonderful? These new abilities are amazing!"

Lloyd takes a step away, scared of Yumi.

"But you put them to sleep... How long have they been sleeping?!"

"An hour... Or two... Or five..." Yumi counts, getting closer to Lloyd. "But does it matter? They're happy! They're in the best world of all where all their dreams come true! And you can join them, you can finally see your father and never lose him again..."

"Yumi, that's not the way! You're crazy, come to your senses!"

"Oh, Lloyd..."

Yumi smiles and reaches for him. Lloyd tries to get away, but the Dream Master grabs his head and blinds him with her glowing pink eyes.

"I will help you reach the eternal happiness."

The Titanium Dragon flies above Ninjago City. Zane returns home from a mission. Looking down, he notices that city is... Dormant. The streets are covered in pink mist, and people are asleep on sidewalks, in cars, in their offices. Fortunately, there's no sight of car accidents.

"Pixal, can you analyze this fog?"

"I can't find any information in the database. But, I have to say, it seems to have the same structure as Yumi's elemental power. If I were you, I would hurry."

The dragon speeds up, and Zane gets home in a few minutes. Now it's clear for him that the source of fog is here. He walks through the rooms past the sleeping Nya, Master Wu, Misako... Everybody is asleep. Zane moves crosscurrent and finally reaches the source — Yumi. She floats in the lotus position, surrounded by sleeping ninja. As she pats Lloyd's head, her hand absorbs green sparkles of energy.

"You returned..." Yumi speaks slowly.

The Dream Master straightens her legs and floats closer. Zane gets an opportunity to look at her carefully, and her new appearance scares him. Yumi is wearing a dark-pink kimono with flower patterns, its sleeves and skirt slightly flatter. Yumi's hair float like in the water, and antlers made of cherry branches bloom on her head, filling the room with petals.

"What have you done?.." Zane asks quietly in disbelief. How have everything got out of hand so quickly?

"I... Sent them to a better world." Yumi smiles and looks right through Zane's heart with her eyes closed.

"You put them to sleep."

"The Dream Realm is the best home for these tired souls. It's always been."

"But they can't sleep forever. Yhey must wake up!" Zane insists, but Yumi just shrugs.

"You don't understand. You must join them and see. I will be your guide, Zane, you deserve joining the world of satisfaction..."

She reaches out to touch, but nindroid keeps the distance.

"I'm sorry to say it, but it's the wrong way, Yumi. Running from reality isn't a solution."

"The real world is cruel, violent and sorrowful. The Dream Realm gives them eternal happiness. There's nothing wrong, it's the only way to save Ninjago..."

"No!" Zane interrupts. "You can't choose for others. All you give them is the illusion of happiness, when they can experience real feelings in reality."

Yumi remains silent for a moment.

"You're being stubborn... You're afraid. If you can't believe me..." The Dream Master opens her eyes that turned pink. "Then I will show you the truth."

Yumi dashes to Zane and grabs him by shoulders. He struggles to free himself but fails. The Dream Master looks straight into his eyes.

"You're a nindroid, of course you think differently. But that's not a problem... You see dreams too. You're just like humans... And you deserve the eternal happiness too."

Finally starting Dragons Rising season 2!

Just my raw thoughts of the first three episodes, go:

*Spoilers* (in case there's anyone like me who still hasn't seen it)

Every time Ras is onscreen I just zone out, such a boring ass villain.

Oh dear, influencers have made their way into Ninjago... oh well at least they don't seem to be a huge factor of the season.

OMG yes they acknowledged PIXAL as one of the missing ninja, bring her back too! 😭

Yo Cole get back here, Master Wu's ghost is RIGHT FLIPPING THERE!!?

Dang, new Master of Smoke packs a PUNCH, his fight scenes are pretty cool.

Would've been cool if it had been Ronan running that antiques shop... Seriously what happened to all the old side characters?? The new ones just don't hold a candle to them.

Speaking of, sorry to say, Erin and Sora are still pretty boring to me too. Like yeah they're cute but they just don't have the same amount of personality and charm as the OG gang.

Erin is kinda overdoing it with the whole "poor me, I don't have any Elemental powers" shtick. Makes me think he might put on one of those wolf masks on purpose at one point to potentially unlock some hidden powers or improve his Spinjitsu.

Annnnd Zane is left behind because the writers just don't know what to do with him besides robot jokes, as usual...

Every micro-second of Kai daddying Wyldfire gives me LIFE!

Likewise Nya big-sistering Lloyd whenever he's distressed. Someone working on the show is obviously a big fan of the RGB sibs. X3

YO-! IT'S WU!! Finally~! Okay yeah it was a vision but we finally see him fully and talking! Poor Lloyd, Wu would never say those things to him.

AND JAAAAAAYYYY!!! NYA AND JAY!! It's heart-breaking that their actual reunion might turn out just like that vision though. :'(

Glad his voice actor isn't making his voice so high-pitched anymore, though that could just be because he's still in Agent Walker mode.

My thoughts on ninjago ships!

Just finished dragons rising and wanted to give my thoughts on the ships cuz that’s what holds my attention the most lol. I have both canon ships and fanon ships that i see a lot.

Nya/Jay

I literally love them with all my heart! They work so well together! All of their little interactions just make my heart happy. Their dancing in prime empire, their fist date in season 1, Jay’s proposal, and every other little thing. They are the the best ninjago ship in my opinion, but they are not perfect. I fucking hate the love triangle in season 3! It is so stupid. It comes out of nowhere! I, in general, hate love triangles but this is the worst. Not only was it entirely unnecessary, but it makes all three characters look bad. It makes Nya look indecisive, jay look hella whiny, and Cole look like a jack ass who only wants Nya so that Jay can’t have her. Back to the positives tho. I think the shows writing is at its best when their ship is a focal point. For a long time, sky bound was my favorite season( I know I know). It often gets a lot of flack for the ending, but that is one of my favorite parts. The idea that after all is said and done, only the two of them get to remember this massive Journey makes it all the more special. It’s about them, for them, and only they get to remember it. Seabound quickly took the top spot as soon as I started it(I honestly don’t know if this is a hot take or not, but Nya’s character arc was just so good!). The finale made me sob so uncontrollably, it was a little scary. Jay not getting a real goodbye was so heartbreaking. Seeing how content Jay was after they saved her despite the fact that he was actively being sent to prison is the kind of love I want!

Zane/Pixal

What can I say other than the fact that they are perfect. I mean they literally share a heart for Christ’s sake! If anything, they are to perfect and can be a bit boring, but that is barely a complaint. I will say that I didn’t like how long Pixal was trapped in Zane’s head, but other than that I love them. That scene in Compatible was so unnecessary but so fucking good!

Kai/Skylor

I really like them together. They don’t have enough screen time together which makes it heard for their relationship to develop. Honestly, Skylor in general is underdeveloped. She should have just joined the main cast after season 4. They have good chemistry, have cute little interactions, and are adorable to watch. I just wish she was around more. I was hoping that something more would happen with them by the end of crystallized but nothing really happened. I hope she comes back for dragons rising and has a good storyline, and hopefully some resolution with Kai.

Lloyd/Harumi

No. Fucking no. I hate Harumi. This ship is so dumb in the context of the show. Let me stop now before this turns into a whole rant ( a Harumi rant is for another day).

Lloyd/Akita

I’m actually very fond of these two. I will admit that they don’t get to spend enough time together, but it is still really cute! I hope they find each other again in dragons rising.

Cole/Vania

While I think Cole is definitely queer coded, still find these two cute. Maybe Cole is bi? I also like the idea that Vania is non-binary. Very cute together and I hope that they are endgame

Misako/Garmadon

What can I say? I’m a sucker for these two. They are cute old people who admittedly have a LOT of issues to work through.

Misako/Wu

No. Just no. I honestly hate wu and the idea of him and Misako being a thing is weird. It is wrong on both parts. Just all around stop.

Non/Questionably Canon

Any combo of Kai/Jay/Zane/Cole/Lloyd

While there is nothing inherently wrong with shipping these characters, it just gives me the ick. The fact that they all call each other brothers makes it weird. And it’s different with Nya cuz it’s not like Jay calls her his sister. And shipping any of them with Lloyd is icky for the obvious age reasons, I mean they literally knew him as a 10 year old. But while I don’t like any of these ships, Cole/Kai is the least upsetting.

My Aromantic Cole Head Canon (that is I guess no longer supported?)

IDK I guess just bear with me on this because nobody I personally know still watches this show, so I just need to rant.

I feel like a lot of shows feel pressured to pair people off because obviously, that sells. The saying is sex sells, but I'd argue that it's actually love that sells. Because obviously we are talking about a kids show here. And we are all at least teenagers, right?

Right?

That aside...

My personal head canon, which I've had since like, season 7 or 8, was that Cole just wasn't romantically interested in anybody. And that he was content with that. He found the same happiness that people like Jay and Nya found in a romantic relationship in platonic and mentorship relationships.

I thought maybe that was what the show's creators were even going for with the relationship between Cole and the Ninjago through the whole show. Then again with little Wu in seasons 8-9. And then with Vanya in season 13 (despite there being some romantic subcodes that were like quickly discarded), then with Frack in Dragon's Rising Season 2 (I haven't seen that yet, I have to wait for it to go up on YouTube because I don't have Netflix). The head canon is that while is not romantically interested, and like I guess you could call it aromantic, he is like a huge mentor almost parenteral figure.

My main reasoning is that in real life, I feel like we all know somebody who never got married, yet they are basically a collective mentor/parent. I mostly see this in church communities or in teachers (esp in high school and college) and coaches (I have an aunt who is an ice-skating instructor and a teacher who I'm mainly pulling from).

And when you look at the main team, you have Jay and Nya who at least in the old series where endgame and were I guess married (if that's what the Ying/Yang thing is, Imma be so real I have seen season 10 all of once), then you have Zane and Pixal (who I have feelings about based on the 4 hour YouTube video essay about female representation in Ninjago). Kai and Skylar are more on again off again, but I don't wonder if this may become endgame (I have conflicted feelings about them, that I will not be going into here). The only real representation of this single mentor is Wu, but even he had feelings for Misako (which I have words about, despite my love for Misako). Even Lloyd had that toxic af relationship with Harumi which I will not be going into.

All I'm asking for, and all I'm saying, is that I want a character who can find fulfillment in platonic and mentorship relationships. Maybe I'm self-projecting because I'm feeling desperate because despite being in college people my age and younger are getting married in droves rn. But for me, Cole has always been that caring figure who was secure enough to be okay in a nonromantic relationship.

Cole and Gio are great, I love that dynamic. I freaking love Gio, he is probably one of my favorite new characters. I love that they said "well, we're the adults" and adopted the children. And Bonzel, who I guess is older than them, but is basically just a teenager. But I just want someone who is content with having friends and being a mentor, but not being in a romantic relationship.

Yes, I understand Lloyd is basically that. But I cannot get over that ugly thing with Harumi. He tried. I want someone who is just not gonna try. Maybe they're not content, that's fine. Maybe they desperately want to be in love but can't. I am most definitely projecting here, because Lloyd has been in love (yes, it was one sided) and I haven't. I like Lloyd, I just wanted it to be Cole okay. I'm sorry. That stupid Ninjago where are they now image floated around (the one with Cole grayed out and listed as gay) and I can't stop thinking about this.

Thanks for coming to my rant. I understand this isn't everyone's cup of tea and I know people ship Cole and Gio. I don't think that's an issue. I just miss my aromantic Cole head canon.

Dragons Rising Season 2 Part 2 - Is It Good Or Nah?

YEAH I KNOW I'M LATE.

I delayed my viewing for a couple of reasons:

Digital Circus Episode 3 was coming at the same time and I was ecstatic for that. It was so worth it.

I was waiting to watch these with my GF, who is also a fan of the show. Since Dragons Rising started, we've been watching it together. But then numerous delays happened for us. What those delays were I'm keeping private. So don't ask.

But we FINALLY watched it! And we managed to watch the season in one sitting this time!

Last time it took us two to finish it cause we got cut short.

But if y'all seen my review for Part 1, you know I loved it. I actively LOST MY VOICE at the end watching it and screaming.

So you BET I was excited for Part 2 to see the follow up of this season's story and for it to live up to the hype!

So... did it?

... ... ...

... ... ... ... ...

No. It didn't.

Don't get me wrong, this is NOT a bottom tier season. Not by any means.

And there is one really, REALLY good thing about this part.

But overall, with what Part 1 set up, this was such a disappointing follow up. So... idk what the overall take is. I've been avoiding my Ninjago feed for spoilers. But I am in the category of not liking it very much.

After such a dark, intense, BRUTAL first part that raised the stakes that you FELT, this part...

...has our characters taking place in a fun tournament.

I'm sorry what?

Now, don't get me wrong, I flipping LOVE Tournament Of Elements. One of the best seasons of the show to this day.

But this was completely subverting my expectations, and NOT in a good way. And I think the main criticism of this part is that this wants to replicate Tournament Of Elements SO BADLY. But there is NO FOUNDATION to justify this being ANYTHING like Tournament Of Elements in the first place, so it falls apart.

Ras and his clan's plan was to use a spell to resurrect the Forbidden Five using human sacrifices. So they could control these folks and their power. Why are they doing this? Well Ras explains why and that's spoiler territory, so hold onto it for a second. It's real interesting.

In the first Part, they only succeeded at getting ONE out of their prison, sacrificing Kai in the process. With the Blood Moon gone for a millennium, their plan is fumbled and they have to regroup to come up with a new plan to obtain their goals.

So what the antagonists of this story want is to sacrifice others to revive foes for their plot of *SPOILERS*. That is what is set up for this story.

NEVER, did it say ANYWHERE, that they needed Elemental Powers of any kind to obtain their goals. It was NOT relevant to this plot.

And that's what this Tournament does. You lose a match, you get your powers taken away by *Insert Power Absorbing Artifact Here*, and the winner gets everybody's powers. JUST LIKE ANOTHER TOURNAMENT ARC.

Except in THAT arc, their powers were relevant to the villain's goals, it was established why, and it was a HUGE stake that they lose their powers because not only do you lose, but you also become a slave.

I mean in this one there's the mechanic of the victors of these battles obtaining the loser's powers to carry on in the tournament. That's a cool mechanic I guess. It's underutilized as all Cursed Realm, but it's a cool idea.

Other than that, A TOURNAMENT ARC OF FUN AND GAMES DOES NOT FIT IN THIS SEASON'S STORY. PERIOD.

Also doesn't help that in this tournament, it's very well established that there is a good guy team and a bad guy team. While the NPCs get next to no screen time to have any sort of stake in this game. And they do nothing to shake that up. The only time they do is with characters NOT competing. But we'll get to that later.

In Tournament of Elements, yeah, we had our good guy alliance of the ninja, but the other competitors around them WEREN'T evil. "You're not my enemy, Chen is" And all that. They were just a bunch of naive self reliant bozos who needed to learn unity. They were relevant to the story. But not because they were bad guys.

I'm sorry I'm comparing this to another season so much, but I think it's warranted. Especially when I'm trying to find a way to explain my criticism in a way that (hopefully) makes sense.

I also just flat out DO NOT understand the rules of this tournament at all.

They literally SAY AT THE BEGINNING that giving the victor all the elemental powers is a STUPID IDEA BECAUSE THE VICTOR MIGHT BE EVIL AND DESTROY THE WORLD.

But they completely ignore warning with "Nah, but I'm in charge here, so I wouldn't let that happen!"

Guess what happens.

How does everybody adjust to these new powers real quickly? How does no one get corrupted with all that power? That's a thing that can happen in the Ninjago universe, we've seen it multiple times.

Why is everybody completely okay with betting their powers for the tournament? Not a single person is objecting?

Why did the ninja not originally get invited? Why did the bad guys not want them there? They're some of the most LEGENDARY Pokémon-I mean Elemental Masters in the Merged Realms.

What happens to the expelled people? Do they just get to keep their powers because it's never said they take their powers away when disqualified.

So does that mean everyone can just leave and they lose nothing?

So who cares if the ninja aren't invited/are at stake of being expelled. They don't lose their powers as a consequence of expulsion. They can just leave. And they lose nothing. It's actually so much better than competing.

JUST LEAVE.

Apparently you can win a race to avoid expulsion. Okay. Cool...

Where was this rule when the slug guy got expelled? (I don't remember his name I'm sorry) It was never brought up and Mr. "Follow The Rules" was RIGHT THERE to bring it up!

Who. The Cursed Realm. Is allowing these people to use outside power mechanics?!?!

THE GONG IS OUT IN THE OPEN AND VERY BLATANTLY BEING USED.

THEY EVEN SAY THIS AIN'T ALLOWED, BUT NO ONE CALLS IT OUT AS CHEATING.

It would make sense if BOTH host characters were in on it considering the twist later, but ONE OF THEM IS NOT. SO THAT EXCUSE FALLS APART.

I. AM. SO. FSM-DARN. CONFUSED.

Seriously, this plot device is the single biggest problem of this entire Part, and it drags a whole lot down.

They say that the bad guys getting what they want can destroy the Source Dragons, I.E, THE BIG BANG THAT MADE THE UNIVERSE. That's a pretty big stake, right?

Well I never felt like that was the stake because the whole season we waste time in this tournament nonsense. They even SAY they don't need to win. They just need to find the culprit behind who murdered the Matriarchs. So why are you competing? JUST LEAVE.

YOU LOSE NOTHING. YOU RISK LESS.

The first part did such an EXCELLENT job at establishing the DREAD of the Blood Moon. Lloyd's visions and how scared he is of what was to come. The dragons themselves being horrified of the Blood Moon. Getting Bonzle to safety. The training to prepare for the Blood Moon. It was all building up to this Blood Moon being a stressful, nightmare enducing moment. AND IT DELIVERED IN BEING THAT WHEN IT FINALLY HAPPENED.

It was DREADFUL when the first of the Forbidden Five came out.

But at the climax of this part, I felt nothing.

The pacing is also really atrocious here. I want to take back my pacing criticism from the last Part. It takes FOUR episodes for the Tournament to even get started. (Tournament of Elements took TWO btw). There's a point where a challenge isn't even finished by the end of an episode, and they have to spend the next episode with another part of it to wrap it up. THIS IS AN EPISODE, RIGHT? And then the final battle is ONE episode. ONE.

Cool. I missed Skybound's pacing. /s

There's other examples, but that's spoiler territory so hang on.

Cole and Zane also do next to nothing in this Part. Zane has been done dirty since the last Tournament of Elements and this was NO redemption. Then he does nothing.

Cole has a bit more to do, but his role could've easily gone to any character and nothing would've changed. It's just "Oh this thing used to be my moms! I'll use it for its elemental powers"

Which apparently you can store elemental powers in mechs???

Add that to Ninjago Lore Plot Holes.

(My GF's sibling told me to make an essay about Ninjago's Lore. And... just the idea gives me a headache. Maybe if I get enough demands I'll take on the challenge. Idk.)

And that's it.

Also when did Geo leave the Monastery? That was off screen. No explanation. You don't wanna stay with your boyfriend? I thought that was your whole character thing.

If you wanna have Geo in the story and have him NOT revolve around Cole, GREAT. But it needs to be about SOMETHING. That's all I'm saying.

But I still love these characters, and they're all still themselves, so that's great.

Wyldfyre ESPECIALLY is really growing on me. I swear she's getting higher and higher on my tier list with every installment. I'm THIS CLOSE to putting her in the "WE STAN IN THIS HOUSE" Tier.

Keep being your delightful chaotic self, sweetie! We love you for it!

Anyway that's all I can get into without getting into SPOILERS. So this is where I put the bar.

OH HEY, REMEMBER THAT KAI GOT SACRIFICED AND IS NOW TRAPPED IN HELL?

That was, A BIG THING, right?

Dude got thrown into an inter-dimensional prison without his consent and is stuck there for a millennium.

With Bonzle of course.

There's also four other evil masterminds living there that could KILL HIM.

THIS IS BAD, RIGHT? THIS IS REAL BAD.

Bonzle's a spell. A skeleton. She's fine. She can last a millennium if she's careful. Kai is a MORTAL. BRO'S GONNA DIE IN THERE.

I wonder how he's gonna get out of this one and how he's gonna manage in there. I wonder what he's gonna do in there-

Nothing.

We get one scene where they walk around. And it's so short. That's it. No other establishment of this prison.

Then they discover that Kai snuck in some of Riyu's dragon scales so they can... communicate with him...?

Despite this being an INTERDIMENSIONAL PRISON.

WHAT?

You've been here for HOW LONG and you didn't realize you had scales stuck on your sleeve?

Riyu can modify POWERS. When was it established he was telepathic? Unless I'm stupid and forgetting.

Also, this shouldn't work anyway. IT'S AN INTERDIMENSIOAL PRISON.

That's it. That's everything Kai related. And Bonzle who?

I also don't like how people brush off losing Kai the way they did.

Yeah we get TOLD Wyldfyre is much more aggressive with her training than usual and she's trying to live up to Kai. But that's one scene. And honestly, she's not acting much different from how she usually acts.

And Nya briefly says a couple of times "I miss my brother". But that's it.

THEY DO NOTHING ABOUT IT. GUYS, YOUR FAMILY MEMBER IS STUCK IN AN INTERDIMENSIONAL PRISON AND COULD DIE IN THERE.

And you're just gonna NOT worry about it?

It would make sense if this whole Tournament plot was a scheme related to opening the portal again and getting Kai back and that's why they're doing this. But no.

If they thought Kai was dead. I'd get it. But they blatantly state otherwise. So clearly they don't think he's dead.

IF HE'S ALIVE, WHY WON'T ANYONE TRY AND HELP HIM?!

Some family you people are.

Oh and Kai just comes back anyway. Yay.

Glad one of the highest stake consequences of the first part meant ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

Poor Kai. He just walked through hell and the moment he gets out he gets slammed to the ground by another high stake fight.

Bro. Take a nice long nap when you get home. You deserve it.

ALSO THE FORBIDDEN FIVE ALL ESCAPE.

I thought you needed sacrifices to do that? Now they can just leave willy nilly? Okay sure...

They don't make an impression, at least in this season. They retreat. So next season we'll probably get more of them.

But what about the one that got out in the first part?

Yeah... I really hated how they handled him.

Isn't this dude supposed to be, HELLA INTIMMIDATING?

That's why Ras had to put a shock collar on him to keep him under control. That's also the sole reason why he's pissy at Ras later.

I am NEVER convinced that this guy is a threat.

AND HE WON THE TOURNAMENT. AND I THINK HE'S NOT A THREAT.

How do you manage that?!

EVERY. SINGLE. ROUND. WITH HIM. Includes CHEATING from other characters in order to let him win.

The Nya round? Rigged game to let him win. She would've beat him had it not been for that.

The Lloyd round? Rigged game to let him win due to disqualification. He would've beat him had it not been for that.

The Sora round? Rigged game to let him win. She would've beat him had it not been for that-YOU GET IT.

How am I supposed to believe this dude is a super huge intimidating force when he not only gets defeated at the end by a trophy, but has to have the rules be TWISTED in his favor to let him win? By OTHER character's work?

Is he an author's darling to Blek? I think it's that. I think Blek just has him as a writers pet in his story. (Should I apologize to Priya?)

Also let's talk about the saddest excuse for a twist villain ever. Blek.

SO, funny story while we were watching this season.

There's a murder mystery plotline on who killed the Matriarch Dragon that Arin needs to solve throughout the season.

Me and my GF made a bet.

I said "Okay, all the other suspects would be WAY TOO OBVIOUS to be the culprits. Ras and his whole gang are in the tournament as well without killing dragons as an established motive. They did the 'host is the villain' last time and the guy is mustache twirling and WyldFyre called it. The Seatrix is a raging psycho." (Who, btw, has ABSOLUTELY NO BUSINESS being in this story. She served nothing. She accomplished nothing.) "And they introduce this sweet childhood friend character of Arin's who suddenly not an elemental power?! IT'S FRAK. THAT'S THE DRAGON KILLER."

So we made a bet that if I was right and it was him, we'd get Mexican Takeout.

And if I was WRONG, she had to choose what was for dinner and I was convinced she was gonna make me eat bugs.

Um... suffice to say, I LOST THE BET.

But she got me Mexican food anyway. I love her. <3

The secret murderer of the Matriarch Dragons and the villains behind the whole operation was...

...the villains from the last part.

WELL DUH. THAT'S THE MOST PREDICTABLE THING IN THE WORLD.

OH AND THE HOST WAS IN ON IT TOO. (One of them at least)

(Wait didn't we do that already?)

Tournament of Elements KNEW that was such a predictable twist, so they didn't even make it a twist. It's revealed in Episode 2. Chen is evil. Got it. The situation there wasn't trying to reveal this to the audience, but rather the other characters who were oblivious.

This was trying to fool the audience. And it did not work.

HE'S A MUSTACHE TWIRLING DUDE IN BLACK AND GREY. OF COURSE HE WAS IN ON IT AND RIGGED THE GAMES FOR RAS.

He also gets NO time to actually BE a villain. He gets outed. He whines. Then he gets ditched. That's it.

This is such a bad twist.

Like, I think Miles Axelrod got more screen time to be outed as a villain tbh. (That's exaggerating and not entirely true)

We got a good laugh out of WyldFyre's menu prank though.

You're doing amazing, sweetie!

I kinda wish I was right and it was Frak. That would've been such a devastating twist and added to the more morally grey subtext they had going on. They didn't even have to break his character for him to be the killer, it could've just been either "He was manipulated and following orders" or "It was an accident and he didn't know the consequences".

Especially since it's revealed Frak naively joined Ras's clan not knowing what was actually going on. And it would've made his redemption later that much more bittersweet. Maybe he would've tried to apologize for the murder but fail knowing nothing could undo it.

Even without that though, I like Frak. He's just a really sweet naive guy living out his dreams and got swept up in the wrong crowd. But he ends up valuing his morals over power. That's nice. I like that.

Again, I think him being the killer would've really escalated his character to eleven, BUT I will take what we got cause what we got was neat.

I also like Robi. He's just a really fun, well intended (if a bit stupid) guy who values entertainment and chaos. He's a delight on screen.

Also his interactions with WyldFyre are really cute and wholesome.

Wyldfyre getting a love interest was NOT on my Bingo Board. I headcanoned her as AroAce for awhile. And now that got shot down.

BOO MY HEADCANONS WERE SHOT DOWN, 0/10 GARBAGE. /j

But hey. He's way more entertaining than Skylar. And they're cute. So who cares that they threw in this hetero-relationship quota?

If I had a nickel for every time a fire-based character in Ninjago got a love interest that was a family member to the evil mastermind of a tournament, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird it happened twice, right?

There's one thing I don't like about him though. And that's that him NOT being involved with the villain's scheme creates all kinds of plot holes.

In one episode the ninja get framed for assault on Cinder. Which is against the rules.

BUT LIKE, Robi said he SAW IT ON CAMERA.

IF HE DID, HE WOULD SEE THAT NO FINGER WAS LAID ON CINDER AND THEY WERE INNOCENT.

ALSO, THERE ARE SIX WITNESSES.

If it was JUST Blek and Robi wasn't there, then I'd get it. But no. Robi believes this too.

MY GUY, ARE YOU HALLUCINATING?

FSM, I was so angry at that.

And it's SUCH UNECESSARY drama too because it does NOTHING. There ended up being NO consequences.

We could've not had this and used this screen time for something else, like...

OH YEAH, JAY.

So, uh... last time we saw Jay he was at the Administration as an associate with memory loss.

Here, we see him again, and RAS FOUND HIM AND MADE HIM JOIN THEM.

I'M SORRY, WHAT?!?!

I don't know what the majority take is on this. But I don't hate this idea. I think it's actually a really cool idea of Jay with amnesia being told lies about his identity and siding with the villains as a result. It's a cool idea.

The problem?

This transition happened OFF SCREEN.

HOW DID RAS EVEN FIND HIM?! WHAT?!?!?

Okay, well this is the first time the ninja have seen him!

THE LONG AWAITED MOMENT. HOW IS THIS GONNA PLAY OUT?

Uh... he fights Nya in a match, doesn't remember her, loses the match, and then gets exiled.

And then they never bring him up again.

For a plotline and moment that had been set up since Season 1, this is beyond disappointing of a scene.

Especially for Nya. Girliepop was looking for her husband since day one of Merge. It was her FEAR that he would forget her. And she lives that fear.

To be fair, she DOES try to go after him. But they convince her not to and that the tournament was more important. Okay. Fair.

But like, Zane was already out of the game so you could've sent him after Jay, idk...

And then Nya just I guess forgets about it. Which is very OOC. Especially for Dragons Rising Nya.

I will say I hope Season 3 brings Jay more justice because right now Jay stans are probably starving to death in the cellar. And just got fed rotten flesh instead of an actual meal.

Jay's not my favorite, but I definitely feel you.

Uh... Cinder was there. I didn't care for him in the First Part, and here he does way less. So yeah moving on.

Jordana's little redemption was nice and I understood the buildup, & her interactions with Sora were sweet. (Lesbians anyone?) What I didn't really get was her being possessed by a demon.

I knew she was possessed, but I thought it was Ras's master.

But no, it's one of the Forbidden Five's souls that got transferred to her body during the Blood Moon...

...which makes no sense because it was never established this was something that could've happened.

Maybe I'm being an absolute dumbass and missing some things. That's possible. I missed some things last time too that someone cleared up for me. (Thanks btw.) But I'm watching these WITH someone who is far more observant than me on a lot of things. And we BOTH were confused as we'll get out.

Oh, and there's something else.

WU CAUSED THE MERGE.

...

Okay, I'm 90% sure Wu is dead. But that's another topic.

I have NO IDEA how Wu causing the Merge was even possible. But he did it. And he kept this all a secret and made it someone else's problem.

Just like last time this happened.

And the time before that.

And the time before that.

And the time before that.

OH MY GOD WU, STOP. JUST FLIPPING STOP IT ALREADY.

YOU'VE PULLED THIS SORT OF TRASH ON EVERYONE SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE SHOW AND EVERY SINGLE TIME IT'S LEAD TO DISASTERUS CONSEQUENCES.

AND IN YOUR THOUSANDS OF YEARS OF LIFE, YOU STILL NEVER LEARNED THE LESSON.

EVEN WHEN YOU'RE DEAD. YOU'RE STILL PULLING THIS.

I know it's a hot take but I've said it before. I don't like Wu. I never did. I start to hate him MORE AND MORE with each passing season. It's crazy.

HOW MANY TIMES DO WE HAVE TO TEACH YOU THIS LESSON, OLD MAN?!

BRO DIDN'T EVEN APOLOGIZE. HE JUST CONFIRMED IT AND DIPPED.

I CAN'T EVEN ESCAPE HIM WHEN HE'S DEAD.

So yeah that's my thoughts on that.

Okay, enough negatives. Didn't I say there was something I REALLY liked about this Part?

Let's get into that.

Arin.

HOLY FIRST SPINJISU MASTER, ARIN.

He was the single best thing in this part. And quite possibly of this season as a whole.

Season 1 was Sora's origin story.

Season 2 was Arin's origin story.

But there's something even greater than that.

Sora got a heroes origin story.

Arin got a VILLAINS origin story.

Yep.

WHAT DID I SAY BEFORE?

"The Evil Arin Theory Is Brilliant. Too bad it'll never happen because this is a kids show and thus they wouldn't do that to one of their protagonists."

Well. I will be damned. I WAS WRONG.

THEY ACTUALLY DID IT.

Like, I saw it coming, but I was still surprised they went that route.

See, I saw the build up there.

Arin is the only ninja on the entire team without any powers, in a world where powers are the PEAK of being a hero.

Everyone who is an Elemental Master was chosen by destiny and/or family lineage. If you aren't an Elemental Master, TOUGH LUCK.

Arin was so interesting because despite not having powers, he STILL chose to take the role as a ninja and train under Lloyd. Even when the entire world system didn't work for people like him and was setting him up for failure.

(Hello autism metaphor my old friend...)

One would think through power of love and friendship and through hard work and perseverance and determination and passion, he would overcome the odds and become a very valuable ninja!

But... no.

He couldn't succeed.

The universe would not let him succeed. It wasn't in the stars.

His dream was never meant to come true.

He's destined for failure.

Even when approaching the ninja about his setbacks, they don't even really try to work around the issue. They just say "Eh, you're fine the way you are kid, we still love you. Anyway why don't you do this sideline job that the rest of us can doon our own just as effectively if not more so?"

I'm autistic in a school life that hated my guts. And let me tell you. I HAVE BEEN THERE.

The buildup was all there for Arin to learn certain things and made perfect sense.

His BEST FRIEND deceived him and refused to believe in him. And he is SO UPSET at the betrayal.

But you also can't hate Sora for it because of WHY she did it. And I feel SO BAD for her as a result.

She did this morally AWFUL BETRAYAL to a strong friendship. BUT it led to the best possible outcome for them at the heat of the moment, and it led to HER having the best results she could've.

She WON. But at what cost? The cost of putting a knife in your friend's back so deep that you can't heal the scar? EVER?

His childhood friend, who was working with the villain, having a lesson that works for Arin and helps him succeed. By telling him to defy the world's logic instead of flowing with it. Which is so strange because IT'S NOT WRONG.

Ras is a sociopath and has done many, MANY horrible things. No denying that. But he also has good intentions of wanting to undo the Merge and reunite everyone. His methods of viewing the world actually become beneficial. It's... strange.

It's strange because Ninjago has always been this black and white show. Good guys. Bad guys. Boom.

It's RARE you will find a character that is morally grey in this show.

So it is SO STRANGE to me to have a conflict that's becoming so morally ambiguous in a world that used to be so basic and altruistic. But it's done in a way that feels so natural.

I can safely say without hating on them, THE NINJA ARE NOT COMPLETELY GOOD INFLUENCES. THEY'RE FAILING.

I'm used to Total Drama being a morally grey show. Everyone there is screwed up in the head. Morality is OUT THE WINDOW.

But NINJAGO?! Yeah this is some wild stuff.

Ras is still a bad person. No one's arguing about that.

Arin ISN'T. He's a kind dude! He wants to do the right thing! He just has these other priorities that are very sympathetic and understandable! He's a kid in a system that is failing him and he wants to be validated!

Despite Arin turning at the end, he's NOT evil for it.

And I think that is SO MUCH MORE INTRIGUING about it than him turning straight up evil. And I CANNOT BELIEVE THEY ACTUALLY WENT THIS ROUTE.

He doesn't fully trust Ras. He knows Ras is a garbage person and a dangerous terrorist. It's not like he's completely agreeing to being a terrorist as well. He's just looking out for himself and his own interests and wants, and Ras is the one that can help with that. I like that.

I want to make that clear for anyone confused in assuming Arin is believing the terrorist and everything he says. No he's not. He refused to believe Ras multiple times, and had to get PROVEN multiple times that Ras was telling the truth. And even THEN. He still knows this guy is dangerous and evil.

Also I love the kid flashbacks with Arin and his parents being detectives, OMG...

So yeah. Ninjago went there. WE HAVE A VILLAIN PROTAGONIST.

Or at least a protagonist that is morally grey.

I NEVER imagined they would EVER go this route. And I am VERY much an Arin stan now, and I am SO INTRIGUED by what they do with this.

Even if they fumble up this plotline badly in the future, I am still going to be praising the balls they had to do it ALONE.

Sora and Arin are becoming a Vi and Jinx.

Hopefully they have a better ending than that though...

So yeah, this Part did ONE plotline super well, and very little else lived up to the hype. Disappointed.

If you were to ask me to rank these, Part 1 of this season is an S tier. Part 2 is a very low C tier, bordering a D. So I GUESS that translates to a B??? Yeah we'll go with B tier.

This is one of those seasons that's all over the place overall.
