My thoughts on Gray and Gruvia

Hey everyone.

I’ve been a fan of Fairy Tail for a long time, and one character I’ve always liked is Gray. He’s consistently shown depth, integrity, and a strong sense of right and wrong. However, there’s one aspect of the series that’s been bothering me for a while now: Gray’s relationship with Juvia. Despite all the red flags, uncomfortable moments, and outright toxic behavior from Juvia, the narrative seems determined to force this relationship into something it’s clearly not.

What follows is a breakdown of why I believe this relationship is problematic, how it undermines Gray’s character, and why it’s not the romantic story that some fans, particularly “Gruvians,” seem to think it is. As well as talk about the 180 in Gray’s personality in the 100 Year Quest.

Let’s break down the ridiculousness of Gray and Juvia’s so-called “relationship” after the battle in the last arc.

First of all, after all the build-up, Gray still didn’t give Juvia an answer. Instead, he tried to use the Ice Shell spell—a move that would erase him from existence. It’s a clear indicator that Gray was ready to sacrifice himself for the greater good, but of course, Juvia had to make it about herself. She "sacrificed" herself for Gray during the battle, and this is where the narrative completely goes off the rails.

While Gruvians see this as some grand, romantic gesture, it’s painfully obvious that Juvia’s “sacrifice” wasn’t as selfless as it’s made out to be. Her body can turn into water, meaning the blade could have gone through her without causing fatal damage. But instead, it feels like she deliberately made herself vulnerable to force Gray into a corner, emotionally manipulating him into acknowledging her feelings. And unfortunately, it worked. Gray, being the good-hearted person he is, said he’d take her feelings into account now, which just feels like an obligation rather than genuine affection.

To make matters worse, the creators claimed that the transfusion Juvia gave Gray is the reason he starts falling for her. What? That’s not only ridiculous but also a flimsy excuse for Gray’s sudden change of heart. It undermines all the growth and depth Gray had as a character. He didn’t fall in love with her because he was emotionally or romantically invested in her—he fell in love because of a blood transfusion? That’s not love; that’s poor writing.

And even after all of that, Gray still doesn’t give her a straight answer. He promises to do so after the 100-year quest, which he doesn’t even bring her along for. Yet, fast forward to the sequel, and suddenly, Gray’s done a complete 180. He’s talking about being the best man for Juvia and, apparently, thinking of her when the topic of romance comes up. Really? After years of rejecting her, setting boundaries, and making it clear that he wasn’t interested, we’re supposed to believe that now, all of a sudden, he’s deeply in love with his stalker?

Gruvians take this as a huge victory, but the reality is that Gray isn’t acting out of love—he’s acting out of guilt and obligation. Let’s not forget that Gray has a tragic history of losing people who sacrificed themselves for him, starting with his mentor Ur and later Ultear, both of whom truly cared for him. When Juvia “sacrificed” herself for Gray and survived, it’s not hard to see why he might feel indebted to her. But that’s not the same as romantic love. It’s survivor’s guilt, plain and simple. Gray is putting Juvia’s happiness above his own, disregarding his own feelings because he feels like he owes her something for what she did.

And honestly, if Gray truly is in love with Juvia now, after everything he’s been through and after rejecting her repeatedly, then it’s nothing short of character assassination. The writers have completely twisted his personality to appease Gruvia shippers, ignoring all the red flags in their relationship and pretending like Gray’s long-standing discomfort with Juvia never existed. This new Gray feels like a hollow version of the character we once knew, crafted solely to pander to fans rather than stay true to who he is.

What’s even more frustrating is the lack of discussion around how bad this writing is. Why aren’t more people talking about how Gray’s character has been butchered in the sequel? It’s disheartening to see fans celebrate these new developments when they clearly ignore all the signs that this relationship is built on manipulation, guilt, and toxic behavior. Gray deserved better than to be paired with someone who stalked him for years and ignored his boundaries. Instead, the writers decided to force this unhealthy dynamic into something it never should have been.

Fairy Tail Fav Relationships

Fairy Tail was the anime that got me into anime. It's not my first anime because I was watching animes before I knew what they were. But a friend recommended and then here I am an anime nerd.

Anyway I wanted to show you my ranking of ships but then my fav friendships.

1st Ship Gruvia

I love Gruvia so much. The development of their relationship is what I live for.

2nd ship Nalu

So when I first started watching Fairy Tail I was pissed as I thought Nalu was the only couple that isn't truly canon. However watching Fairy Tail as an adult and having past relationships I now realize that they are a couple it's just a more low key couple just without the grand confession. They were 100% together.

3RD ship Jerza

Now when that near kiss happened I was screaming but the he hit us with the "I have a fiance." WHY YOU LYING TO US JELLAL.

4TH fav ship

They're honestly so cute. The only thing is... Why would you go for a guy who crucified you and imprint his guild symbol on you. I know he redeems himself but still. I still love them.

5TH fav ship

How do Harem members feel about taking a bath with Natsu? Erza doesn't particularly care and I know that Juvia would rather willingly try to bathe herself, but I would like to know what the other members are like.

Screw my phone refreshing the page….. (人◕ω◕)* Guh. I hate I have to retype all of this. I was on a roll, too.

Look, I'll keep this brief so I don't run into the same glitch. I wouldn't say Erza "doesn't care", it's more she's nonchalant because it's a ritual she and Natsu normalized since they were young. The two of them "like" bathing together, Erza perhaps marginally more than Natsu because it's a precious ritual to her. But Natsu puts up with it even if he doesn't get some people being squeamish about a grown man and woman bathing together. (人◕ω◕)

Note that these are all initial reactions. Married bathtime just blends together after a while, so let's focus on the unique reaction of these ladies~

Yukino is more on the squeamish, flustered side. She doesn't approve of Natsu just barging in and asking if she needs help; she politely requests separate baths, and like a gentleman Natsu listens to her. Of course Yukino privately enjoyed the brief, warm contact between them, and questions whether she's a pervert… But oh well. C'est la vie. (人◕ω◕)

Lisanna in contrast has always been sorta jealous of Erza getting bathtime with Natsu when they were younger. Mira always barred her from such activities. Now that they're grown up, Lisanna finally gets a say, and she's fine with tempered bathing one another. That is to say, scrubbing each other's backs, shoulders, heads, Natsu's chiseled chest… (人◕ω◕);;; She's not quite comfortable with letting him scrub HER chest, but she's fine with stomach and legs. Basically anywhere NOT naughty. Lisanna is very firm about saving the naughty for marriage. (人◕ω◕) Natsu just doesn't get it, but does as he's told to do.

Cana is complicated. When mostly sober, she vetoes shared baths. There's letting guys ogle her, and then there's letting Natsu's hands roam all over her. Very different matters. (人◕ω◕) When drunk she's more loose and inviting. But we're all shameless and regret a lot of things when we're drunk, ne? (人◕ω◕)

Wendy is on the very, very flustered and squeamish side of the spectrum with coed baths. (人◕ω◕) Absolutely doesn't want to bathe with Natsu 'til they're married. She just doesn't understand WHY Erza and Natsu have that ritual… Erza insists Wendy will get over her silly jitters, but Natsu listens to Wendy's preferences… Even if he doesn't get what the big deal with coed baths are. (人◕ω◕) Mating season is an exception, but mating season is like Vegas. (人◕ω◕)

Chelia is just like Wendy and insisted on separate baths 'til they're married. She knows sharing baths is a form of L O V E~ … But she's just not ready for that. And kindly asks perverts to remove such vulgar images from their minds. (人◕ω◕)*** Mating season is an exception. But what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. (人◕ω◕)

On the hornier end of the spectrum we have Sayla, who bathes with Natsu from the get-go. There's no ifs, ands, or buts. (人◕ω◕);;; A ton of cleaning gets done… Very thorough stuff… But, uh… Their baths are outlandishly long. (人◕ω◕);;;;;;;

Virgo is a similar case. But unlike Sayla she's more professional about ensuring her Master is sufficiently clean first, and then getting to the fun stuff… Well. After Natsu-sama insists she gets clean in kind. (人◕ω◕) Then it's the ideal time to crawl into Natsu-sama's lap and beg for pyro-fueled spankings. Natsu's very confused about Virgo's preferences, but he's not one to deny ladies in need. (人◕ω◕) Her requests to "service" him also baffled him… But feels quite good whenever he lets her do it. Helps him take a load out…er…off. (人◕ω◕);;;

Kagura-chan is very disciplined and strict. NO shared bathtimes together. She does her best to protect all the ladies from this shameless dragon, but there are some that slip by her… And. Well. She can't say no to Erza-nee. (人◕ω◕) Mind you, Kagura changes her tune after marriage. But that's as natural as night to day. (人◕ω◕)

Meredy… Suffice to say, she's smack dab in the middle of that spectrum. (人◕ω◕) She's flustered when Natsu initially barges in and asks if she needs help bathing, but is easily won over by how well hung he is. (人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕) She was raised by Ultear, what did you expect? Bathing with Natsu becomes one of her favorite activities, even if it takes a few times. (人◕ω◕)

Brandish is nonchalant about Natsu's brazen behavior. Letting him clean her results in the least amount of exertion, which is juuust fine with her. (人◕ω◕) He's also very warm and stronk. Brandish is just dandy with this arrangement. (人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)

Juvia… She is perhaps the most conflicted. On the one hand, shared baths should be for marriage. (人◕ω◕) On the other… Vixens are already tempting Natsu-sama with their womanly wiles, and sharing a bath is initially too much at first (she runs away)… But after a few prompts from Natsu since she never gives a clear answer, Juvia gains the courage Meredy easily got and the temperance Lisanna has to keep Natsu-sama from getting perverted. (人◕ω◕) Juvia is a wholesome, supportive, LOVING girlfriend~

Sorano is just like Sayla. They're bathing together out of the gate. (人◕ω◕) You shouldn't be surprised. Sorano's a dirty birdy, and she'll win her dragon over to the dark…er…lustful side. (人◕ω◕) Baths with Natsu are heavenly. Befitting an angel such as herself. (人◕ω◕)/

Ultear bathes with Natsu from the get-go. (人◕ω◕) She's not as whiny or needy as Sorano, she's more sultry and MATURE than that. But she likes Erza's setup and makes it her own. (人◕ω◕) Of course Natsu eagerly helps a REAL woman with getting clean~ She's still exasperated with the Zalty references, but whatever. Natsu knows what he wants, and Ultear says that makes him a good dragon. (人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)

Mira… sigh Let's be real, Mira's another complicated one. (人◕ω◕) She's a model who's used to flaunting her goods, but baths are SUPPOSED to be private… She's formal like that. However, as embarrassed as she is at first, she sees Erza and Ultear and all these others okay with shared baths… And eventually Mira summons her courage to take what she wants. She becomes tempered and controlling like Ultear, and Natsu learns to roll with her whims. … Even if he turns the tables quite easily. (人◕ω◕)

Bonus: Heine and Juliet.

Assuming they're granted proper human forms, these girls have roughly the attitude of Virgo. Albeit they're far less masochistic. (人◕ω◕) Juliet is more teasing and full of energy. Heine is exasperated and doesn't like to be troubled with pervy things (kinda like Brandish), but she's dutiful and the two of them WILL keep Natsu-sama clean. (人◕ω◕) And then as payment he'll make THEM feel amazing. (人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)(人◕ω◕)

It's Levy. Literally the best character ever. All her character writing flaws are Mashimas fault not her. I love her you leave my beloved alone.

First, I didn't change her appearance too much, gave her glasses, and played with her hair a little, but honestly, I had no qualms about it! I like the yellowish-orange color of her dress, I think it brings out her blue hair well and makes her look all sunshine and cute. I kept her outfit simple with long sleeves but have her legs out. I enjoy her having small breast's, not every woman has a D-cup. I enjoy the plain outfit for her, she likes comfortable clothes that she can lounge in and read a book, but she still wants to look cute.

In my redesign I'm taking her self-conscious attitude over her tit's away though. I don't think she would care. She likes her body. If anything she's self conscious over how clumsy she can be. Yes I do like the clumsy bookworm trope, except when she trips or stubs her toe it's almost always followed up by a string of curses. She doesn't curse alot, she finds it dumb, but when her toe is stubbed? Fuck that.

Moving on, Levy as a character is great. She's mature, brave, intelligent, but severely underestimated. She can read in many different languages, and her magic is incredibly useful, but she is seen as weak. I feel like where she lacks physical fighting strength, she makes up within her magic. I understand she originally was supposed to be a background character, but when Mashima changed his mind, he should have begun developing her a bit more. We get no backstory for her, and after it's clear there's a relationship with Gajeel, that's all we seem to get. I love their relationship, but I want more outside of it.

I love her being mature too because she can easily reel Gajeel in. Like Erza, I imagine just a sharp look from her has him hanging his head and scoffing. It's cute seeing the little shrimp of a woman reel in this large man who's abrasive and ready to rumble. I love their relationship. It's not perfect but God is it cute.

I want more relationships outside of ya know Jet, droy, Lucy, and gajeel. How is her relationship with Juvia? She was in the same guild Gajeel was. I know juvia didn't attack Levy, but she attacked Lucy, her best friend. Do you think she holds some sort of resentment towards her that slowly drifts away over time? Same with Gajeel- she wouldn't forgive him so easily. Let alone did he attack her, but he attacked Jet and droy, her team. Also speaking of Jet and Droy- please please give them more too??? Why are their personalities just revolved around Levy ;^; Make them befriend other people in the guild perhaps. They're a guild!

Listen I haven't watch fairytail in a hot minute so if I'm mistaken on any of these takes, let me know but I kinda just want more lol. Even if it's small moments, I know I know they're side characters, but if you're gonna introduce characters into your story (and they're a l o t of them), make them more. Even if it's subtle! Character design makes these things known! Which is why Jet and Droy are also getting a redesign.

I'm gonna get through like the main main people I guess first, I just had to do Levy because I adore her. She's my favorite.

Also no not all of the redesigns will look like the original designs I promise ;^; I JUST REALLY LIKE HER DESIGNNNNN ALREADY.

I do have to draw her in her lil time skip outfit though when she's on the magic counsel. The coat is chefs kiss.
