My favorite detail in Wicked
Wicked part 2 spoilers I guess but I just got to watch Wicked on streaming and noticed some foreshadowing that is SENDING me.
By far my absolute favorite detail is the use of body language to foreshadow whatâs to come for these characters in part 2.
The biggest example is the choreography in âDancing Though Lifeâ. Thereâs just SO MUCH scarecrow imagery in the movements here, like look at the Scarecrow dancing in âIf I Only Had a Brainâ and then Fiyero dancing and TELL ME the filmmakers werenât at least heavily inspired by the latter.
First Fiyero moves very slow and loosely, almost like a ragdoll. Which is exactly how IIOHAB starts.
But then as the song escalates the dancing switches to a much more energetic choreo, flailing and kicking their limbs around. Again, exactly how the Scarecrow does it. Especially the background dancers in the last scene look almost one-to-one with the original footage.
Its almost tragic seeing the unfortunate fate that awaits Fiyero foreshadowed in such a lively and fun musical number with none of the characters knowing.
I know a lot of other people have already pointed this out but just seeing it for myself, especially watching the clips back to back just blew my mind. This shows such a level of thought and care put into this movie by the production team especially from something that most people arenât even going to notice. But it just makes the movie seem all the more complete and im SO impressed that they added this
still watching gifs does NOT do this parallel justice so I encourage âyall to watch the music videos back to back to get the full experience
More, smaller examples under cut:
The first time Boq meets Glinda he leans over her shoulder in a way thats almost identical to the iconic scene from the Wizard of Oz:
The burning statue of Elphaba in âNo One Mourns the Wickedâ mirrors Idina Menzels pose while performing âDefing Gravityâ on Broadway.
#wicked the movie#wicked#wicked 2024#wicked easter eggs#wicked details#wizard of oz#wizard of oz 1939#parallels#boq wicked#fiyero wicked#elphaba wicked#i cannot tell you HOW HARD it was to make the gifs for âdancing through lifeâ#like why donât they just have music videos?#I had to resort to YouTube shorts#oh well

Stuck in an Isekai x Over 9000
Young Justice had experienced a lot over the years, but getting stuck in a book?
Thatâs a new one.
However, they were going to deal with it, even though none of them had read the book. Thankfully, Cassie and Bart had seen the movie, and Tim had taken them all to see the musical, even if there were definite differences in the three mediums.
Bart was thankful to be a simple student at Shiz. Cassie, who was now Boq, was less enthused. Tim just wished to people would stop trying to push his wheelchair. Mâgann was struggling to pretend like she had the same attitude as Fiyero.
And Kon? Well, Kon was having a very hard time not falling in love with the boy named Elphaba, whose pretty green skin and wide smile gave him butterflies. Them being roommates? That made it harder for him to ignore it.
Danny was just there because Clockwork had said he was needed to be there.(Well, that and the fact he actually liked this story, but he wouldnât admit it.)
Clockwork just wanted to make sure his little champion would meet the lovely clone boy. They would be perfect for each other.
#dcxdp#inspired by wicked#wicked#in case it wasn't clear#Tim is Nessarose#Kon is Glinda#Danny is Elphaba#this is a gender bent version of wicked#idk I just like it#clockwork is a match maker

You know whats gonna be crazy about Wicked being two movies is that the second part is going to bomb
Its going to be like the It movies, everyone loves the first part where their kids but hates the second adult half
The book the play is based on is a depressing mess, I've read it twice and already made like 3 rant posts about it. If this first movie stops after the "Defying Gravity" bit then all the second half is gonna be is:
Elphaba failing to be a terrorist, getting that one guy she bones(Fiyero) killed, ending up in a nunnery and being semi-comatose when she gives birth to his child, going away to the middle of nowhere for the rest of her life and neglecting said child, obsessing over animals, developing a-
OH WAIT, HAHA, NO
the Broadway show was fucking smart and completely hucked that whole second act out the window and rewrote it wholesale. Because Fiyero fucking does not come back as the scarecrow, thats a random ass delusion that Elphaba comes up with towards the end of the book when shes fucking losing her grip on reality. Boq is just some guy, he doesn't become the Tin Man, its implied that some dude Nessarose fucks over with her magic becomes the Tin Man
Like you gotta understand how much the original second half is just Elphie sitting in that castle and just aging and being a deeply unlikable person, she gives up on her whole justice crusade pretty fucking fast. She doesn't overthrow the Wizard, he just fucking leaves. Madame Morrible literally dies of old age, warm in her bed and Elphie is so crazed that she cracks a dead women's head open with a marble bust and declares that shes killed her
the whole second half of the book is just everyone Elphaba went to school with trying to live their adult lives, being freaked out by her random crazy bullshit and trying to talk her down off the edge of a cliff while she yells crazy conspiracy BS while pointing at them
everyone who was ever important to her dies, usually as a direct result of her actions, and then Dorothy rolls up and goes oh god i'm so sorry I killed your sister i came all the way here just to tell you og can u ever forgive me? and Elph is so far gone that she mentally can't handle this and fucking sets her own ass on fire/Dorothy accidentally kills her by dumping water on her
SHE FUCKING DIES
the wizard fucks off and leaves OZ to rip itself apart due to the power vacuum his absence leaves
god this book is depressing, and i haven't even brought up all the weird ass sex stuff
This book being made into a Broadway musical is like Jhonen Vasquez getting to make a kids show for Nickelodeon:
It happened, but a lot of miracles had to be happening in the background cos jeesus look at the source material

Book vs. Musical Wicked: Or, Musical Wickedâs Many Crimes Against Maguire Are Finally Reckoned
Re-reading Wicked has the musicalâs horrid adaptational choices living rent free in my noggin once again. So much so that I can count the things the musical improves upon from the book on one hand. Otherwise, the musical simplifies, water downs, and downright deletes crucial points of Maguireâs book, going beyond mere adaptation necessity to actual damage. And itâs time I counted the ways.
Elphabaâs father was a minister, Frexspar the Godly, not the governor of Munchkinland. It is Elphabaâs mother Melena who comes from royalty, which she abandoned when she ran off with Frex. Elphaba, as the oldest, is the Third Thropp Descending, and thus next in line for the Munchkinland throne. Way to erase an actual matriarchal royal family, musical
The Clock of the Time Dragon is an actual traveling puppet show commandeered by a mysterious dwarf. Frex literally preached against it, to no success, and almost to his death. Whatâs more, Elphaba was actually born in it
Frex fucked her up, for sure. He believed that Elphabaâs green skin was due to his failure to protect his congregation from the Clock of the Time Dragon. And he greatly favored Nessarose. But he also loved Elphaba in his own way. He had a special nickname for her, Fabala. He was also in a throuple with his wife and Turtle Heart. But as we canât have anything that even remotely criticizes religion or depicts religious trauma, not in our family-friendly musical, Frex is just a dickish secular governor
Elphaba is actually allergic to water, due to the Wizardâs Miracle Elixir. This is not only loyal to Wizard of Oz canon, but also exacerbates her feelings of worthlessness and fuels her desire for justice. Because she herself feels evil, unable even to be cleansed, ouch, my heart. But of course we must have a happy ending, so in the musical itâs just Ozian superstition
Itâs Elphaba who first sees Glindaâs potential and influences her, challenging her and genuinely interested in her. Glinda eventually does accept her friendship. In the musical, itâs the exact opposite, because this is truly the Glinda show
Elphaba and Glindaâs relationship in the musical does have more development, from hate to friendship. Good job, musical, have a cookie. Unfortunately, it makes their friendship fundamentally based on a lie. Elphaba believes Glinda was sincere in gifting her that awful hat, and so goes to Madam Morrible and makes her give her a training wand. Glinda only comes around because Elphaba gave her what she wanted in the first place, and she feels guilty for her awful behavior. Fuck you too, musical
It is Glinda who shows aptitude in magic, and Madam Morrible encourages her to take sorcery. Elphaba goes for natural science instead, and doesnât even do magic until her later years. There are hints of her powers during the Shiz years, but they are very subtle
For that matter, Madam Morrible and Elphaba hated each other from first jump. Morrible tried to groom Glinda instead, but after Dillamondâs death, homegirl smelled a rat and no longer trusted her. In the musical, itâs the exact opposite, because of course it is
There was no Elphaba-Glinda-Fiyero love triangle, largely because Glinda is racist. Thatâs right. Fiyero is a Winkie and too dark-skinned for her. And yet she is still more sympathetic than Musical Glinda. Make that make sense!!!
For that matter, the Shiz section in the book focuses more on Elphabaâs friendship with Boq than hers with Glinda. She starts working for Doctor Dillamond, and he helps her with the research. Also, Elphaba is a bit of a wingman and helps Boq woo Glinda, sort of (though she does say Boq is worth ten of Glindaânot in that way, of course!!!)
Galinda changing her name to Glinda in the book was out of real guilt and horror over Ama Clutchâs illness and Doctor Dillamondâs death. In the musical, Glinda does it because she wants to impress Fiyero. Because musical must love triangle!!!
The Doctor Dillamond/Animal Rights subplot is done much better in the book. For one thing, Dillamond is murdered by Morrible, for his research into human-Animal DNA. Elphaba also sees the conditions of the Animals worsens in Munchkinland under her sisterâs rule. The musical just has Dillamond fired publicly, because the musical doesnât know how fascist dictatorships work
Boq is not the Tin Man. As in the Oz books, he was one of the Munchkinlanders who helped Dorothy on her way to see the Wizard. The Tin Man was another guy entirely
Fiyero is not the Scarecrow. Elphaba believed briefly that he may have been, but she was sleep deprived and literally going mad. Musical just decided to canonize Elphabaâs delusions, I guess
Glinda is the one who wants to come with Elphaba after they meet the Wizard, and Elphaba refuses. It is the exact opposite in the show, because this is, and I cannot stress this enough, the Glinda show
In the musical, Elphaba/Fiyero have more development, meeting during Shiz, Fiyero supporting Elphaba in ways Glinda canât or wonât, with a meet-cute and everything. Good, musical, have another cookie. That said, Faeyeroâs dynamic during the Emerald City years cannot be bested. They were having full-on philosophical conversations, ffs!!!! And Fiyero even cooks Elphaba in some parts!!!! Also, they fucked, and it was glorious
Granted, Fiyero was married in the book. It was an arranged marriage to Sarima, a girl of his tribe, when they were children. But he did take up with her after Shiz and they had three children: Nor, Irji, and Manek. Elphaba goes to live with them at Kiamo Ko after falling into a coma and giving birth
Yeah, Elphaba falls into a coma when she loses Fiyero. Gives birth to their son Liir and lost her memory of the period due to trauma. Musical Elphaba does hit a C#5, though. Good job on translating that trauma, musical
Speaking of Liir, his and Elphabaâs relationship is so interesting. Hilarious and heartbreaking at turns. Elphaba realizing that hey, this kid may be her son and trying to mother and failing miserably. Liir having a crush on Dorothy and kissing her, which makes Elphaba want to be put out her misery. Good shit, good shit. So of course the musical has none of it and deletes Liir lol
Glinda never takes down Madam Morrible or the Wizard. It is Elphaba who goes against them. Instead, Glinda marries a baron, Sir Chuffrey, and becomes a popular socialite who dabbles in sorcery
Elphaba and Fiyero really and truly die in the book, and it is tragic as all hell. The musical opts for them surviving and making Glinda the tragic figure. Once again, fuck you too, musical
#wicked#wicked musical#wicked book#gregory maguire#my kingdom for a good adaptation of the books#wicked meta#it is so rich and full of depth#of course the musical couldnât get all of it#which is why it should have been the job for the europeans#they didnât have to make it the glinda show#i will die on this hill#donât get me started on ozâs religions and politics#the musical is one cake the book is a feast

do you think i have forgotten about you?
read it on AO3 at https://ift.tt/igoDatJ by pereznhoward âOh, Elphie.â She cries and cries, clinging on to the last thing she might have of the girl. Her memories donât do her any justice, for some reason they never get Elphabaâs smile right, sometimes itâs the gap in her tooth, or the intricacy of her little braids. She was there in her head, but they were never enough to fulfill the hole in her heart. They were never enough to satiate her need for her touch. If not for the responsibilities that now lie on her shoulders, if not for the good of Ozânot that its people deserved any good after they had treated Elphaba anywayâshe would have stayed there. She would have lived there and allowed herself to become mad if it meant sheâd still see Elphaba in her dreams. *Flash back*
Munchkinland, nestled under the bright and expansive skies of Oz, was a place of simplicity, where days passed like gentle waves, and the air always seemed filled with the scent of spring. The fields were lush, the homes small but filled with laughter, and the people, despite their small stature, had hearts large enough to fill the vastness of the land. It was here, in the heart of Munchkinland, that you had grown up. A Munchkin like the rest, though in your heart, you felt something differentâa connection to one person, Boq, that set you apart.
Boq was the one constant in your life. He had always been there, the kind and gentle soul whose smile could brighten the darkest days. From the time you were children, you and Boq had shared everythingâdreams, secrets, and the quiet moments between the chaos of life in Munchkinland. As time passed, your feelings for him had deepened. You had come to realize you loved him, though it was a love you never spoke aloud, tucked away behind smiles and laughter.
And then there was Nessa, Nessarose Thropp. You and Nessa had been inseparable growing up. As her best friend, you had supported her through everythingâfrom her physical struggles to her emotional ones. Nessa had always been the one who needed the most care, but she was also the one you trusted most. However, over time, something began to change. Nessaâs once quiet need for attention turned into something much more consuming, especially when it came to Boq. You could see it in the way she looked at himâhow she seemed to cling to him, to keep him close in a way that seemed to push you further away. But you didnât know how to confront it, not when she was your best friend, and Boq was always so kind, always so generous with his affection.
In the evenings, when Nessa and Boq would laugh together, you would watch them from a distance. You smiled for their sake, but a nagging ache lingered in your chest. You never said anything, never let your feelings slip, because you didnât want to cause trouble. But you couldnât deny the growing tension in the air between the three of you, a tension that neither Boq nor Nessa seemed to acknowledge.
Life had always felt steady in Munchkinland, but beneath the surface, something was changing. Something that you could not yet see but knew, deep down, would eventually affect everything.
The day the news came, everything shifted.
The whispers began weeks before, but it wasnât until the announcement came that Munchkinland truly felt the weight of it. Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, had once been a misunderstood and outcast student at Shiz University. Now, she had fully embraced her darker powers and had begun a campaign of destruction across Oz. Her rebellious acts, though initially driven by a desire for justice, had spiraled into a thirst for domination. People called her "evil," feared her, and believed she had betrayed everything she had once stood for. The rumors spread like wildfire, from the Emerald City to the farthest reaches of the land.
But it wasnât just Elphabaâs descent into wickedness that rocked Ozâit was what it did to Nessaâs family.
Frex, Nessaâs father, had always been a proud and honorable man. He had fought to keep his family safe in the wake of Elphabaâs actions, his grief and frustration slowly eating away at him. News of his daughterâs fall from grace, along with the ever-growing power of her sister, took its toll on him, and one fateful morning, he collapsed. The doctors said it was a heart attackâstress, exhaustion, and worry had caused his body to finally give out. For Nessa, the loss of her father was more than just the death of a parent. It was the crushing weight of failure and rejection that she had never been able to shake, and now, it had taken him from her.
Her grief was deep, but there was more to it. In the wake of her fatherâs death, Nessa found herself thrust into a new position of powerâGovernor of Munchkinland. It was a role she had never asked for, but one that had been forced upon her. It was clear to everyone that Nessa was not ready to rule, but the people of Munchkinland had no choice but to accept it. After all, she was the only one left of her family, and the legacy of the Thropps demanded it.
The announcement that Nessa had become the new Governor was met with mixed reactions. Some of the Munchkins felt sympathy for her loss, while others feared what her newfound power might mean. As Nessa took her place at the head of Munchkinland, it was impossible to ignore the shift in her demeanor. Gone was the shy, vulnerable girl you had known for so long. In her place stood someone colder, more calculating. There was a fierceness in her eyes now, a determination to prove herself, to show the world she was not weak.
It was no surprise, then, when Nessaâs first act as Governor was to claim control of Boq. As her aide, Boq was bound to serve her every whim. It was a decision made not out of necessity, but out of her growing obsession with him. And although Boq was always kind, always ready to help, you couldnât shake the feeling that something was changing between the three of you. Boq, who had once been so close to you, was now often by Nessaâs side, fulfilling her every request with a loyalty that seemed to pull him further away from you.
The tension between the three of you was palpable, but it was still a quiet storm. You could not yet see the full scale of the chaos that would soon tear everything apart. But you knew one thing for certainâNessaâs loss, Elphabaâs fall from grace, and the weight of power had set a chain of events in motion. The world was changing, and with it, everything you knew and loved was on the verge of being irrevocably transformed.
And so, in the days that followed, you began to understand that life in Munchkinland could never be the same. A storm was brewing, one you could neither stop nor escape, and its consequences would be far-reaching, altering everything you held dear.ďżź
One evening, Nessaâs servants arrived at your home to inform you of the new appointment. Nessa, as Governor, wanted to meet with you to discuss the future of the land and her plans. The reader was already uneasy about how much things were changing, but there was nothing to be done. You owed it to Nessa to support her, as you always had.
When you arrived at her new, grand office, Nessa greeted you warmly, though there was something in her gazeâsomething almost calculating. She smiled sweetly as she took your hands in hers. âEverythingâs going to be different now,â she said, her voice smooth, but there was an underlying edge to it that made you uneasy. âMunchkinland is in my hands now, and Iâm going to make sure it stays that way.â
You tried to smile back, unsure of what she meant. âOf course, Nessa. Youâve worked so hard for this.â
Boq, who had been summoned along with you, stood by her side, his usual comforting presence offering little relief now. He seemed to shrink back, his eyes darting between you and Nessa. It was clear that the balance of your trio was shifting, and neither you nor Boq could avoid the inevitable changes that came with Nessaâs newfound power.
As the day went on, the feeling of unease only grew stronger. The realization that Nessaâs attachment to Boq had only deepened, and her ambition for control was beginning to shape everything around her, felt like a storm on the horizon. You knew, without truly understanding why, that things could never be the same again. ďżź

Wicked part one
So here we go again, another Broadway to Hollywood adaptation. If you have been following the blog long enough, you know that I have some strong opinions and that goes double for anything theatre related. Itâs a special interest of mine and one I take very seriously as there is no shortage of misfires in this subgenre of movie musicals; however, that doesnât mean every single was a faceplant, look no further than the works Lin Manuel Miranda with the adaptation of his first show In The Heights, and his directorial debut with Tick Tick Boom. It is possible to do the source material justice, which is why I was trepidatious about Wicked, so let me spin you a yarn about my experience with part 1.
For the uninitiated, Wicked is an adaptation of author Gregory MacGuireâs first novel in a 4-book series that reimagines the lore of the Wicked witch of the west (who given the name Elphaba, a nod to Oz creator L. Frank Baum). The musical itself reimagines the book significantly as well, focusing on the relationship Elphaba and Glinda the good witch of the North, who are both college roommates and eventually best friends.
So if youâre familiar with the source material, then youâre going to nitpick quite a bit, I mean with a nearly 3 hour run time how could you not? A handful of scenes ran long in the tooth and the padding was painfully obvious, but it didnât really hurt the end product.
And allow me to put my fan boy goggles on, and what a product it was! I was mesmerized by stunning visuals that made each and every scene come alive! Even that darkest forests felt alive, which is fitting for the wonderful land of Oz. Many of the set pieces felt like they cast members and they felt like they had their own stories to tell, much like how a theatre actor has to make the characters which they play their own.
From the costumes to the props, they all excel at visual storytelling.
Casting was filled with obvious choices such as Cynthia Erivo, Arianna Grande and Jeff Goldblum, and unexpected casting such as Michelle Yeoh⌠who I had no idea could sing.
Yeohâs gift for playing both graceful and stoic characters, really shine as the intimidatingly strict Madam Morribel.
Jeff Goldblum was a pique as the Wizard.
Fiyero is one of my dream roles, and Jonathan Bailey of Bridgerton fame, encapsulates why I love the character with his natural charm and swagger. He had many in his numbers questioning their sexuality (and maybe a few audience members...)
Ethan Slater was a lovable simp as the pathetically lovestruck yet kindhearted munchkin Boq.
Marissa Bode was delightful as the tragically beautiful Nessarose, and as I applaud Universal for casting an actual disabled actress for the role as many know how I am a huge champion for representation.
And of our leading ladies own these roles; the outspoken and at times controversial Cynthia Erivo put every ounce of talent into the role of Elphaba, being Broadway Royalty I would expect no less. Grande, who I think is an amazing comedic actress channel her Cat from Victorious/Sam & Cat into the role of Galinda/Glinda, however there were instances where it felt like she was trying to impersonate the original actress to play Galinda, Kristin Chenoweth. But they worked brilliantly as a duo and their chemistry bled over into real life as they became thick as thieves after filming.
And whatâs a musical without dancing? Because OH MY GOD was that dance choreography legendary! I was in love and if I had paid for the screening it would more than make up for the abhorrent prices of movie tickets! And besides, this is the filmmakersâ style.
And of course, the most important ingredient being the music, every song is here with little extra, and I am delighted by this fact because adaptations tend to cut songs, characters, etc. To get the full affect I highly recommend watching in IMAX or whatever equivalent your theater has.
This shouldnât have worked, but Director Jon M. Chu a man who has dance coursing through his veins was determined to bring the modern legend of theatre to life, and this goes for the set pieces, performances and so on. I love his work and if part two is anything like this, it could be his magnum opus.
It won't change anyone's minds about musicals, but for people like me who had to fight the urge to sing out loud, you are going to have a Wicked good time! (I'm sorry)
I give Wicked (part one a 4 out of 5)

i watched the wicked movie for the second time today and a few new things i noticed this go around
i caught a second animal professor on the faculty. that one was some sort of bird and they were also present during "something bad happening in oz"
there were so many strong background performances that i didn't notice until this time. there were so many kids gawking around hallway corners to stare at elphaba early on
at the end of the musical, nessarose was at the governor's mansion with their father, who was collapsing at the news of elphaba's fugitive status. did she go home with him after the train scene? was that a planned school break? or was she so upset because she realized that boq was in love with galinda that she had to go home to be sad?
fiyero leaves shiz on feldspar's back at the end. is he frantically getting his friend home to winkie country with the increasingly draconian rules against animals? or searching for elphaba?
boq was staring at the green lightning in the sky as other students frantically packed. were they evacuating the school for a state of emergency because of how morrible and the wizard are spinning elphaba turning on them?
watching the grimmorie scene again, i think that even morrible severely underestimated elphaba on every level. like from a power standpoint she clearly didn't think that elphaba was going to immediately be able to do the spell. they didn't have the way that they were going to frame any of their actions settled because morrible thought that elphaba would be easier to manipulate. because she HAD been so far! but morrible, again, severely underestimated the value of truth and justice to her. she was offering her stability and social standing, but she already HAD evidence that this wouldn't be enough for elphaba.
morrible should have known that these weren't the ways to effectively manipulate elphaba, since she SAW most of elphaba's greatest displays of magic and was able to manipulate her feelings about the treatment that dr. dillamond received into a blinding flash of magic.
like the wizard pays momentary lip service to elphaba's desire to help the animals to get her to transfigure the monkeys, but they IMMEDIATELY drop that facade. like oh hell look she did such strong magic! we're gonna use these guys as spies to further oppress the animals!
they're both so unused to being questioned or stood up to that they couldn't conceive that the girl who had already shown her motives and been ostracized her whole life might stick with her own principles and not participate in scapegoating to save her own skin.
the paternalistic way that the wizard talks about the monkeys and seditious animals. like we already knew that he was paternalistic from sentimental man but HOOO BOY it gets worse
i've seen people say that madame morrible's greatest mistake was choosing elphaba rather than galinda to groom, and i would say that i don't agree with that. her greatest mistakes were 1. not trying to understand elphaba more deeply to manipulate her and 2. not trying to use galinda to manipulate her as well once they became a package deal.
morrible underestimated elphaba's convictions. she also underestimated galinda's interpersonal skills. she loses to elphaba in act i because she doesn't think that her frumpy, ostracized little prodigy could ever look her in the eye and deny her a life of fame and power, which lost her the grimmorie and the perfect malleable magic grand vizier. she's going to lose to galinda in act ii because she thinks that ditzy, image-driven galinda doesn't care about anything beyond having her picture perfect life. but galinda LOVES elphaba and she's even better equipped for social battles than they are... so she's going to lose all of oz
