Laughing at the concept of Marcie valiently trying to defend her brother from being called 'creepy' or 'weird' when the reality of the situation is that he genuinely is just like that. He's not creepy because he's autistic, he's creepy and him being autistic doesn't help that fact

I’ve spent a long time now sorting through screenshots, behind the scenes footage, designers portfolios, and I think I’ve deciphered the map of Ambrose.
Tumblr media
Starting on the left side of the street, there’s a hardware/outdoor store, noted by the wheelbarrow outside and assorted parts on the shelves.
Tumblr media
Connected to that is a small plaza with a Dentist’s office (the window stickers mention denture prices), a diner with outside seating, and what appears to be a bar judging from the bar stools in the window. It may be connected to the diner.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally for the end section of the strip, this shop is less clear, but based on the sign that ends in “-ium” and the button tufted display, I’m guessing this is a premium/high end store or some kind of emporium.
Tumblr media
Directly across the street from that is a club. The window faces the street, and around back is the entrance. Also in this plaza is the pet store Carly walks to, a drug store, the grocery store (Flannery’s) that Nick goes to, and a barber shop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Crossing the street again, there’s a large bowling alley.
Tumblr media
Surrounding the bowling alley are residential homes as it transitions into neighborhood territory. You can tell from the fences around these homes that they aren’t public property. The one directly next to bowling lanes is the green house that the wax woman looks through the window of.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Crossing the street again, this part was already labeled by the lighting plot, but that’s the garden (really just some dead shrubs and a gazebo,) the cemetery, and the church. There’s also a second building on the church property that shares the same sidewalk. Although it looks completely nondescript, buildings like this connected to church property would usually be used for non-worship activities like Sunday school, community events like meetings, or funeral services (though Trudy’s viewing is right in the main church, so that’s less likely.)
Tumblr media
With the church as a reference point, going back down the opposite side of the street, there’s what looks to be some kind of fashion or accessories store. In the window, I see wig heads wearing hats, and maybe some shoes. I found a sketch of a storefront that also reminds me of perfume bottles and shoes, so the idea was at least considered.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obviously as the two buildings have back to back doors, next to this is the Guns & Ammo store that Nick and Carly break into. This also connects directly to the movie theater.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The theater is also connected to a small electronics store on the other side.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Directly across from that would be Bo’s gas station. There’s a huge advertisement right next to the station for financing loans, but the front of the building it’s painted on shows its a media video/music store. (ps the yellow truck Vincent drives is the “company” tow truck for the station.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Connected in a plaza with the video store is a dry cleaner and, based on context clues, a furniture store. In the possibly furniture store window, there appears to be rolled up rugs or carpets, and a large wooden shelf. The strange point of view of the shot where these shops are visible seems to imply that the businesses once had apartments over top, or at least that things are being hoarded in the upper floors.
Tumblr media
Across the alley street from that is a fire station, connected with city hall. This is where the Miss Ambrose posters were displayed. On each side, there are blue garage doors, possibly with more emergency vehicles for the town.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The House of Wax and the Sinclair house are placed at higher reliefs than the other businesses and homes, symbolizing their importance and once, their wealth and celebrity status.

Y'all
I know I haven't been active on this blog for years now but every time I tried rebuilding my Downloads folder or got the itch to play/create again I would get absolutely PLAGUED by pink flashing, which is something that a couple years ago when I was addicted to TS2 and playing on a lower end computer very, very rarely happened. Like I honestly can only remember it happening to me *once* back then and it's not like I've ever had a tiny Downloads folder or anything, right? But lately it's been awful, just completely awful. Like loading into the game and immediately having my sims T-pose and flash pink awful no matter what I did.
And then I did this...
Tumblr media
Switched from extra large view distance to just large. Not even because of pink flashing, just because I have 29 residential lots and over 40 community lots in one neighborhood, and moving the camera around was getting a tiny bit laggy sometimes... and the stupid fucking pink flashing is gone. Completely gone!!!!!!!!!! I have been playing the same stupid overly crowded neighborhood with 18.8 gigs of custom content for hours and hours on end and visit every stupid community lot I want and have improved lot impostors AND I EVEN WENT TO BED AND LEFT MY GAME RUNNING AND CAME BACK TO IT AND IT WAS FINE, the game was fine, I played for hours again and it was fine!!!!!!!!
NOTHING IS PINK AND NOTHING HURTS!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm sorry if this is old news and I'm sure this is one of those things that doesn't even work for everybody and I feel like I probably saw this tip somewhere already and completely forgot about it when I was going crazy with pink soup but I am so fucking happy right now, I love love love hate this game so much 😭😭 and now I can have an absurd amount of CC and an absurd amount of detail and sims and lots, a 5 minute loading time AND no pink soup anywhere in my game, this really is the future, like this IT.

Part 2 out of my Custom Neighborhood series! You can find my video here! You can view my Neighborhood Templates video here!
Guidelines I follow as well as any helpful links to some name generators will be under the cut! ♥
Starting a new Neighborhood can be tough! Where do you even start? Well, this written guide and video above is here to help you get started!
STEP 1: Creating/Choosing a Template - If you want to start from COMPLETELY SCRATCH, open up SimCity 4 and create your own map! - If that's too difficult or you just don't want to (like me!), you can download maps off ModTheSims or use the ones already provided in-game for you! :)
STEP 2: Naming Your Neighborhood/Lots - Take inspiration from real life! - Generators also help A TONNN! Below I linked the ones I like most! Feel free to mix and match them to come up with more unique combinations!
Fantasy Name Generators (Town Names) Mithril And Mages - City Names Sims 2 Name Generator
STEP 3: Lot Planning - Personally, I like to keep Community Lots/Apartments near the center of the map, and Residential homes around the sides/edges - Decide if you want just Small, Medium and/or Large lots in your neighborhood! - Place them around the map to figure out a layout until you are satisfied!
STEP 4: Choosing Your Community Lots - Main Hood Essentials: Cemetery, Restaurant, Park, Clothing Store, Grocery Store - University Essentials: Library, Town Hall, Lounge, Gym - Shopping District Essentials: Everything you can imagine! I also like to leave space for Sims to own their own businesses! I tend to use Shopping Districts as Secondary-Main Neighborhoods! - Downtown Essentials: Bowling Alley, Bar, Restaurant, Cemetery - Vacation Essentials: Hotels, Parks, Landmarks After I have the essentials, I fill in the gaps with whatever I want! Like I added a Car Dealership in my main neighborhood as well as a Cosmetic Surgery clinic! I also added a Train Station in my University!
The Mithril and Mages link above is great to come up with names and business ideas too!
STEP 5: Decorating Your 'Hood - I do this overtime! I don't think there's ever been a time where I've stopped decorating! Start by placing some trees or the flower decorations around the empty lots you placed!
STEP 6: Neighborhood/Lot Descriptions - Personally the hardest thing about Custom Neighborhoods! The good thing though is these can be left blank and nobody would know! - My best advice is to wait until most of the 'hood is built up, and then come with some descriptions! - Photoshopping the pictures like EA/Maxis will create beautiful pictures for the Neighborhood Stories album! (This is another post for another time)
STEP 7: The Families - Can't have a complete neighborhood without Sims and Families! - Use the Random Aspect Generator to come up with various Personalities for your Sims! - If you forgot to use a Clean Template (No Townies), I found a mod that will change up their names! - Take inspiration from TV Shows or the other Sims games! I always tend to recreate the Broke Family's storyline and Malcolm Landgraab's storyline with 2 families in my neighborhoods! (I like having a Rich and a Poor family lmao)
Creating new neighborhoods is always so much fun! I hope some of these guidelines help you get inspired!

Version 0.2, the first big update for Dandyville, is here!
This update introduces 8 new lots (6 residential, 2 community) and 4 new households!
New Households
The Loste Family
The Pierrot Household
The Sputnik Household
The Tiller Family
New Lots
I noticed version 0.1 seriously lacked starter homes, unless your Sim wanted to live in some burned down ruins. So now there are 4 new starter homes for your Sims to move into: 50 Plumbbob Road, 62 Mulberry Court, 67 Mulberry Court, and 74 Llama Lane.
View all new Residential Lots here!
There's also a couple of new community lots: Jukebox Junction, a classic diner with adjacent karaoke bar and dance club, and Four Paws Quarter, a place about anything for the feline and canine at home!
View all new Community Lots here!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Requirements
I created this neighborhood with The Sims Complete Collection, but you might be okay if you simply have all expansions installed.
(Optional) Hungry Hungry Hamster Game -- Official Maxis object! I basically used it just to fill another space on the carnival lot. I also recommend getting the other official objects from that site, but your game might already have most of them. (Mine did, at least. If you notice missing objects in Dandyville, it's likely one of these!)
(Optional) Livin' Large Extreme Character Pack -- A set of skins that were given out as a preorder bonus for The Sims: Livin' Large! I only used some of these for the occasional townie and I suspect if you don't have these the game will just use a random skin.
(Optional) No Buskers Sign -- The ONLY piece of unofficial custom content I used! I use this on community lots where the old town busker feels unfitting and where he might trap your Sim by standing in the way of the only exit. Currently only used on the Aquamarine Quarter lot.
Downloads
Sim File Share
Simblr.cc
itch.io
Install Instructions
Go to your The Sims folder (default location: C:\Program Files (x86)\Maxis\The Sims). You may need admin rights for the next steps!
Inside you will see a folder called "UserData8". Rename that folder to something like "UserData8backup".
Open Dandyville.zip and copy "UserData8" from the .zip-file into your The Sims folder.
Open the game and switch to Neighborhood 8. You did it!

Back to the Exchange we go! Generally speaking, with these world overviews, I mostly want to focus on complete worlds, or at least worlds that are complete enough that you can just plunk down a sim or twelve in the world and play, without having to do any set-up. But, for those who like to build, I will also give a shout-out here and there to empty worlds that I think are nicely sculpted/painted/decorated and that have good lot lay-outs that would be easy to create a nice-looking town in, whether you build the lots yourself or plop down EA or downloaded ones.
This is one such world. It's a recent one, uploaded in January of 2022. It has lovely mountainous scenery full of evergreen trees as well as quite a bit of water and three waterfalls. The lot layout is great, too, with discrete sections that make it easy to create various types of neighborhoods within the world as well as a centralized city/downtown area, complete with a waterfront.
Some stats:
I'm not 100% sure what size the world is, but I think it's 2048x2048. Not all of it is routable, though, so the playable area is smaller than that. It shouldn't take sim-hours to get anywhere.
I'm terrible at recognizing what landscape items come from which EP, but I did see trees that I know for certain come from Pets and Ambitions. I thiiiiiiink the rest is all basegame, though? Maybe? There is no Store content or CC.
I counted 114 lots, with 84 designated as residential and 30 as community, but since they're all empty, you can change that however you want. All of the lots are flat, other than half-a-dozen or so that overlap water so that you could build/place ports/houseboats on them. The "bay" area would be a great place to add some diving lots, too. Some of the lots are odd sizes, particularly long, narrow strips between other lots which are obviously meant to be greenbelts. There are also some other lots that are just a bit "off" from normal sizes -- like 45x40, for instance -- but this wouldn't mean that you couldn't place pre-built "normal" size lots on them. You'd just have a bit of space left over in some cases, which can be a good thing.
There are no spawners in the world. None. Not even fish. Minor pets do not spawn, either. So, if you want to be able to fish or collect things in this world, you'll need to add spawners yourself.
As usual, the title of this post is a link to the world's enormously unhelpful Exchange page, but if you don't want to deal with the Exchange/the Launcher/sims3packs, I have uploaded a .world file here. If you download that, it goes in your install files under GameData - Shared - NonPackaged - Worlds. If you like this world, the creator has two more similar ones, also empty, which you can access from the "Creator" tab on the Exchange page.
So, all that being said, let's have a look at some more pics and info, behind the cut!
First up, some Edit Town pics of the various sections of the world. As I said, the world is broken out into discrete sections meant for different purposes. I don't know about anyone else, but this is something I look for in worlds. So here we go:
Tumblr media
This is the area where all of the lots designated as community lots (except for one out by the lighthouse) are. Me, I'd put luxury houses on the lots on the causeway bit on the left, but as-is they're designated as community lots. Anyway, this is obviously where the city/downtown is supposed to be.
Tumblr media
This is a little rural area, with three larger lots for farms.
Tumblr media
This area has a bunch of small lots. The ones in the grid layout are 15x20, and the ones in the other bit are mostly 20x20 with one or two more 15x20s. So, this would be a good place to put starter houses or small-footprint multi-story houses.
Tumblr media
The lots on the back of the central "mountain" are large and have nice views of unroutable wilderness with a lake and a waterfall, so pretty obviously meant for fancy houses. The area in the upper right has smaller lots but also with a water view, so also good for smaller but more-expensive houses. The lots in the red rectangle are kind of odd, though. They're 15x40. I suppose you could build narrow but very deep houses on them, like urban brownstones or whatever, but I would replace them with fewer but square-er lots.
Tumblr media
Annnnnd this is the area that's mostly meant to be mid-level suburbia, I think. Larger lots laid out in a grid, tree-lined streets, blah blah. There are some larger and more isolated lots there in the bottom right as well as the upper bit along the river, though.
And that's about it! Since the world is empty, we're left with scenery, so...Let's have LOTS MOAR SCENERY!

Welcome to Greenwood !
GREENWOOD - V2
If you live in Greenwood, that has to mean you are something other than human, insane or even both. With its dense forests, crystal blue ponds and eclectic architecture, the town has the kind of bizarre charm that puts a spell on anyone who steps on its ground. For centuries, it has been a sanctuary for people who had been cast away from their homelands. But is it really such a quiet and peaceful place ? What kind of secrets do the inhabitants have ? Is it true that people were murdered ? Why are alien spaceships drawn to the town so much ?
Tumblr media
You will find out as you play the neighborhood. It's ✨a mess✨.
Most of the Sims have some kind of tie to the supernatural, either being a supernatural Sim themselves, extremely into the supernatural, extremely against the supernatural or having had to deal with the supernatural at some point.
The hood just needed some changes, such as a more coherent architecture, less terrible community lots and less trees, because the neighborhood deco in V1 caused quite a lot of pink soup and crashes for some people with less powerful computers or who used an enlarged viewing distance in lot view with disabled fade distance. If you still experience pink soup, maybe try LazyDuchess's experimental fix or lower your lot skirt size / enable the fade distance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
WHAT IS IN THE HOOD ?
If you still have v1 and you've had that save for a while, then you don't need to delete it and grab v2, of course.
The hood has :
16 playable families and 4 bin families.
77 lots : 32 community lots, 38 residential lots (16 occupied, 22 empty), 3 apartment lots with 4 slots each, 2 buildable lots and 2 hidden lots.
Completely re-done hobby lots, to include stuff from all the expansion packs and with some stuff that made me go "WTF" removed (main hood only).
INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS :
• For the main hood, place the GRWD folder into your [Your Name] / Documents / EA GAMES / The Sims 2 / Neighborhoods folder. • For the subhood, place the SGWD folder into your C: / Program Files (x86) / EA GAMES / The Sims 2 Ultimate Collection / The Sims 2 Open For Business / TSData / Res / NeighborhoodTemplate folder.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
REQUIRED MODS :
MidgeTheTree's Child Lycanthropy mod. Not having it won't break the game, but it will cause graphic glitches.

THANKS
Many thanks to all the people who gave me feedback during development and after the release of v1, on Discord and MTS. Y'all are really amazing ^^
Stay tuned, because I am working on some pretty big stuff that will be revealed... someday, I don't really know, but I can't wait to show that to y'all. All I'm going to say is : if you like futuristic stuff, TS1's Magic Town and if, like me, you had a Monster High/Ever After High phase at some point, you may like what's coming next.

Questions for House MD fanfic authors, other House MD lore enthusiasts, and anyone familiar with Princeton, New Jersey geography:
Have you found or created any good references or headcanons for the locations that exist in the show, but not in real life?
If you live(d) in this part of New Jersey, do you have any opinions on where it would make sense to place things?
I ask because the House MD time travel / isekai author self-insert fanfic I'm writing is going to delve pretty deeply into the logistical, legal, and financial challenges of building a new life from literally nothing, 20 years in the past. Unlike @acrownforaking 's protagonist in "Intervention," my OC is not a teenage girl who can be passed off as House's long-lost daughter (which is for the best, given how much my middle-aged self-insert wants to fuck that age-appropriate man), and she is going to get off on the wrong foot with the characters who might have normally been the most able/inclined to help her.
So, getting around the Princeton area in 2004 as a broke semi-homeless person is a problem to be solved as part of the story, and thus I need to nail down the precise location of key settings in the Houseverse so I can figure out what they're within walking distance of, transit options, etc.
The Hospital
Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital doesn't exist IRL, and it's not simply a fictionalization of Princeton Hospital because that IRL hospital also exists in the Houseverse and is referenced a few times in the show.
I used to assume that the fictional PPTH was somewhere on the IRL Princeton Plainsboro Road, located here:
Tumblr media
But the wiki reminded me that in "After Hours," it says Prospect Street on Chase's GPS. The nearest Prospect Street is in the town of South Brunswick Township and appears to be a residential neighborhood from "driving" down it in Google Street View, but there's a Prospect Avenue in Princeton that terminates on Princeton's campus:
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, the building in the aerial exterior shots of PPTH on the show is actually the Frist Campus Center of Princeton University IRL:
Tumblr media
And Frist Campus Center is located near the western end of Prospect Avenue, where it terminates at Washington Rd:
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, while the show never explicitly identifies which medical school their teaching hospital is affiliated with, I'm comfortable headcanoning that Princeton University has a medical school in the Houseverse (it doesn't have one IRL). We can deduce from "Three Stories" and the early season 4 episodes that the hospital and medical school must be adjacent or perhaps even share some buildings because the characters seem to go back and forth between the classrooms and the hospital without putting on their coats or getting in their cars.
So I'm thinking of headcanoning that Princeton University has a much larger campus in the Houseverse than in IRL, with the medical school buildings and hospital complex clustered around the corner of Washington Road & Prospect Avenue (which is Prospect Street in the Houseverse). I'll keep the exterior of the buildings pretty close to IRL, but what's inside them will be different.
However, there's a couple of problems with this location:
1) Why would a hospital in that location be named Princeton Plainsboro Teaching Hospital? Where does the "Plainsboro" part come in if it's not in that town or on that road?
The IRL Princeton Hospital is on Plainsboro Road, but again, PPTH isn't just a fictionalized version of the IRL Princeton Hospital because the latter exists in the Houseverse and is occasionally referenced on the show. We can also infer from some of Cuddy's remarks about Princeton Hospital that it is a completely separate organization with different management, specialties, accepted health insurance plans, etc.
Tumblr media
And here is the location of the IRL Princeton Hospital in relation to Frist Campus Center (the building depicted at PPTH on the show):
Tumblr media
Unless someone has a better explanation or idea, I think I'm just going to headcanon that there is/was a second hospital in the same area as the IRL Princeton Hospital that is/was named Princeton Plainsboro Hospital and that the PPTH from the show was originally a satellite campus of that hospital but is now independent. The "Plainsboro" part of the name is simply a legacy from when it was a satellite campus, and Cuddy is too financially sensible to waste a ton of money on a rebranding campaign.
I live at the bottom of "Pill Hill" in Seattle (First Hill) and can attest that having a bunch of different hospitals all clustered together is definitely a thing that happens IRL despite how counter-intuitive it is to have multiple emergency rooms within a few blocks of each other instead of spread throughout the city.
2) Where should I put all the university departments and functions that are displaced by turning Frist Campus Center and the surrounding buildings into a hospital complex and medical school?
This problem is an easier solve, because what's this I spy in satellite view:
Tumblr media
Fuck that golf course.
So unless anyone has a better idea, I'm going to expand Princeton University's campus to the southwest, replacing the golf course that's there IRL. Maybe include a nice arboretum so that we still have some green space, but make it a park that anyone can use instead of a private golf club with a $6,000 (!!!) initiation fee.
House's Apartment:
Per his driver's license, House lives at 221B Baker Street (just like every other Sherlock).
His apartment (technically condo, since he owns it) is "a few miles" from the hospital per the episode "Whatever It Takes" and it's an 8-mile run via an unknown route (likely not a straight line) per the episode "Meaning."
His mother indicates that he specifically lives in the city of Princeton, not a neighboring city or suburb, because she's been following the Princeton police blotter ever since House moved there, per the episode "Love is Blind."
Unfortunately, neither of the local Baker Streets are even in Princeton:
Tumblr media
So it seems that I need to just pick an existing street in Princeton and rename it as Baker Street in the Houseverse.
Ideas for some Princeton streets that are an appropriate distance from the hospital where a building that looks like this and the street name "Baker" would fit in?
Tumblr media
I can't find anything about there being an IRL location that corresponds to the exterior of House's apartment building, so I suspect it's a fake building on a sound stage. But please correct me if I'm wrong.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts & help!

Josh visits a stylish, sustainable home in inner-city Perth where an architect has designed his dream house with one central priority—the entire area of the block is covered in gardens.
When introducing a new architectural style into an established neighborhood it's important to respond to the existing character. This home bridges the old and the new through good design and clever use of plants. Infill housing is an innovative way of using land more efficiently, by building new homes in small parcels of premium real estate. These buildings have a smaller footprint and make living near the city more accessible, but it isn’t always easy to get it right. The potential loss of garden space and tree canopy is a contentious issue with infill housing, meaning good design of both the house and garden are absolutely critical. What this home proves is that a climate-responsive house on a small parcel of land can replicate 100% of the plot surface with gardens and be a completely livable and stylish solution.
Architect Jimmy Thompson designed his own home with plants in the forefront of his mind. Situated at the rear of a subdivided block, this home blurs the lines between the landscape and the building itself. Jimmy says, “from a philosophical point of view... I think it's just so important that we don't distinguish between architecture and landscape, really, they need to be enmeshed.” Jimmy says by using this site, he could “borrow the adjacent landscape.” Creating gardens on raised walls provided boundaries without fences which further enmeshes these ideas of architectural landscape.
As an “ex-backyard” the property covers 15m x 17m and Jimmy’s design ensures the garden spaces replace and retain every portion. There are edible gardens on the perimeter of the house, an indoor courtyard for medicinal plants, and a rooftop garden encouraging habitat with wildflowers and grasses endemic to Western Australia. Jimmy says, “as designers and architects it's important when doing infill that we do it responsibly. For me, that meant replacing what was formerly a backyard with the equivalent area in gardens and courtyards. For us to do that here we had to do that on multiple levels including the roof gardens.”
Jimmy shares the home with his partner Angie and their two cats, who enjoy the elements designed to facilitate optimal living experiences in different seasons. “It’s really operable, almost like a yacht,” says Jimmy, “at different times of the year, different times of the day, you’re always pulling, opening, making the most of southwesterly winds coming through... for comfort around climate, you need to have choice.” This climate responsive design shares characteristics often seen in Mediterranean building styles, as they’re designed to store or redirect natural energy. Jimmy was directly inspired by Perth’s mid-century architects Marshall Cliffton and Julius Elischer who “went looking at different vernacular architectures for Perth” specifically. They found practical elements such as whitewash walls and glazed blue bricks in North African courtyard houses, which have cultural connections but practical origins.
Though roof gardens on residential buildings are not yet common in Perth, they provide many benefits such as insulation, habitat and a wonderful outlook. From a birds-eye view, this whole property acts as a sponge with the permeable roof and internal courtyard collecting water which feeds the plants and drains through downpipes embedded in the walls. “Building small but building smart is good for the environment, it's good for your pocket, but it also just makes sense,” says Jimmy. This home showcases how designing a home with a garden at the forefront can result in inner-suburban infill architecture that is both beautiful and beneficial to its inhabitants and surrounding area.

Just Like That: Life and Death in Gaza
When Israel occupied Gaza in 1967, it hollowed out the economy to make us dependent. Most Gazans could either work in Israel or not at all. I remember my father waking up at 2 in the morning to a catch a bus into Israel for work. He wouldn't return until 7 in the evening. He did this every day, despite having to endure humiliations from his boss and from Israeli soldiers at the checkpoints. There was no Hamas then. But the spirit which feeds it sprung from the degradation and physical abuse men like my father went through. Israeli soldiers would sometimes detain Palestinian laborers for hours, or order them to strip naked, just for their amusement. My mother was always worried for my father's safety. She spent her evenings by the window, awaiting his return. My father shared a story when I was about 5 that I can never forget. His Israeli boss told him, "God created only Israelis as humans; the rest of the world were animals, created to serve them. But the early Israelis were disgusted with the animals, so they asked God to transform them into human-like beings. And that's how you all came to be." It seems many in Israel still don't view Palestinians as fully human. In October 2023, Israel's defense minister Yoav Gallant ordered a "complete siege" on Gaza: "no electricity, no food, no water, no fuel." "We are fighting human animals," he said, "and we are acting accordingly."
[...]
I was 12 when the borders were sealed. I remember my father collecting firewood every morning so he could make food for us. The siege sent us back hundreds of years. But we still had television, to remind us how others lived. Almost all the factories in Gaza closed. Farmers stopped working for lack of fuel, fertilizer, and spare parts. My father, still driving his taxi to support us, resorted to vegetable oil for gas. Israeli technicians calculated the minimum number of calories we needed to survive, and only that much food was allowed in. On Dec. 27, 2008, Israel launched its first major assault on Gaza. I was in the ninth grade, waiting nervously for an exam. I had not studied much and was worried about how it would go. Suddenly, I heard loud explosions outside the school. My first thought was, It's Yawm al-Qiyamah. Judgment Day. I heard screams and saw fire and smoke in the sky. I had never been so close to a bombing. As I ran home, I saw corpses in the streets, blood everywhere. In the end, 1,400 Palestinians were killed in that war. Five thousand more were injured. And 60,000 homes were damaged or destroyed. When the bombardment ceased, after three weeks, we tried to pick up the pieces of our lives. But then, in 2012, another war. About a hundred people killed in just over a week. And in 2014, they came again. This one lasted 51 days. The bombing was everywhere and did not stop. This time, my family did not escape. My brother was killed, along with six of my friends. He was my closest companion. We grew up together, and now I was 19, and he was gone. Just like that. My last memory of him is his face covered in blood. As for my friends, they were buried under the rubble for eight days. When their bodies were eventually retrieved, during a "humanitarian pause," they had already begun to decompose.
[...]
In 2023, Gaza entered its 17th year under Israeli blockade. There was no hope of relief. Then Hamas launched an attack that reportedly killed 1,200 Israelis, and Israel retaliated with its most devastating assault on Gaza yet. I had settled in London after studying in the U.K. on a scholarship, but was on holiday in Turkey when the bombing started. Unlike in 2008, 2012, and 2014, I was away from my family during a war. I worried about them constantly. Most of my relatives gathered at my father's place in Deir al-Balah. It was in a residential neighborhood, with no military installations or warehouses nearby. If anywhere was safe, we thought, it's there. I called them every day, asking how they were. "We're fine, we're OK." They were running out of food and water, though. "The situation is very difficult," they admitted—"but we're together. Together, we'll be OK." They were asleep when, on Oct. 22, at 5 in the morning, some Israeli pilot dropped a bomb on our house. Just like that. My family wiped out. My father, Nasri Alnaouq, aged 75. My sister Walaa, 36, and her children: Raghd, 13; Eslam, 12; Sara, 9; and Abdullah, 6. My sister Alaa, 35, and her children: Eslam, 13; Dima, 12; Tala, 8; Noor, 4; and Nasmah, 2. My sister Aya, 33, and her children: Malak, 12; Mohammed, 9; and Tamim, 6. My oldest brother, Muhammad, 35, and his children: Bakr, 11, and Basema, 9. And Mahmoud, 25, a human rights activist who had just been admitted to a master's program in Australia. My little brother. Why was my family eliminated? There was no reason. Were militants there? No. Were rockets there? No. They turned my home into ash and vaporized the life from those people because they were Palestinian. Because the occupation decreed that a decent life is not for us, and if we demand it, then life is not for us. Many of my relatives were left for days under the rubble. One family member went to my home to recover the pieces. He put these remains that were once my nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters in a trash bag and gave it to my sister. Just like that. For me, and my surviving family, this is an epic tragedy. It is also an epic tragedy for the world. Because what the world let happen to Gaza, in 2023 and before 2023, is a stain that can never be removed.

It’s a phenomenon from New York to Dallas to Fresno and Los Angeles, one that seemed inevitable to some from the moment millions of Californians became the first Americans ordered to work from home as a way to fight the spread of COVID-19.
The pandemic is not yet over despite the public being fed up with it. COVID’s viral variants still dog the world as their third winter of plaguing humans begins to wane. Millions of white-collar workers who got a taste of setting their own hours and creating their own work environments, though, still resist going back to the office more than once or twice a week. As a result, hundreds of millions of square feet of office buildings are vacant now in California alone.
The empty offices made it obvious from the pandemic’s first onslaught that apartment conversions would become a major part of the solution to California’s housing shortage, if not its dominant answer. Now that’s becoming reality, the only inexplicable thing about it being the fact it has taken three full years to morph from obvious concept to major reality.
This is how real the conversions of office buildings have become: The website rentcafe.com reports that more than 4,130 apartments and condominiums will be created through conversions of office space this year in Los Angeles alone. Another 1,000-plus new units are planned this year in Fresno, with more than 500 more coming in San Francisco, 450 in Sacramento and about 200 in Oakland.
Even cities that have never gotten into this game are now active in conversions: 372 converted units are due to open in Alameda this year, 250 in San Clemente and 250 in the San Pedro section of Los Angeles, not counted in the city’s announced total. Altogether, at least 10,000 new units will open for residential use in former office space before the end of this year.
None of these conversions will be very controversial, as they take up no new ground space, do not alter existing neighborhood views and profiles and therefore don’t provoke the environmental lawsuits that hold up so many California building projects, including a major annex to the state Capitol.
For sure, many more units will follow, especially when this year’s already-permitted crop begins drawing significant rents and purchase prices. That is a virtual certainty, as the new units vary from street-level apartments with significant exterior noise to ocean-view penthouses.
The number of units underway debunks naysayers who claimed when the idea first arose just after Gov. Gavin Newsom issued the nation’s first stay-at-home orders in early 2020 that conversions would be more difficult to get permitted and built than new construction. That’s been untrue, especially since the state passed a law last fall making such permits virtually automatic when applied for.
Objections that office floor plans are completely different from residential ones have been quickly overcome, as necessary plumbing and electrical changes, plus moving drywall barriers around within existing indoor spaces, proved less complex than some expected.
What’s more, the conversions are already becoming fiscal godsends for beleaguered local governments with property taxes that were beginning to fall as office building vacancy rates stayed up. So long as office rental revenues dropped, so too could assessed valuations that control the amounts of property tax money coming to local schools, sewer and water districts and other local government agencies.
When the converted units are sold, though they become subject to Proposition 13’s 1% tax on the most recent purchase price of any property. While commercial property tax rates usually remain relatively stable for decades, residential taxes can rise rapidly when units change hands.
At the same time, the conversions are starting to rescue real estate investment trusts, the office rental income of which was dwindling, as were the dividends they pay investors. That’s all happening as onetime office space finds new, productive use.
The bottom line: Office conversions, first recommended by this column in April 2020, are now the wave of the future in California and elsewhere, and they’re a boon to everyone from first-time home-buyers to renters to property owners and local governments.

June 4 - Tokyo Tower and Kabuki Play
What a day! Today, we started late and spent nearly all of the day at Tokyo Tower for the first half and a Kabuki Play Performance in the second. Before Tokyo Tower, my friends and I grabbed lunch at a burger food truck; it was okay. Tokyo Tower provided an incredibly similar experience to Tokyo Skytree, albeit Skytree was definitely taller. Nevertheless, the view was incredible and reminded me of how dense Tokyo really is. Then, the Kabuki Performance in the evening, while at times hard to follow and a bit stretched out, was an incredibly unique experience because American plays fail to rival the attention to detail and dramatic performances constantly omnipresent throughout the Kabuki Performance. Although I wish I understood what the performers were saying, I still appreciate being able to see their acting and incredible makeup/costumes.
Academic Reflection
The urban planning reading provided excellent background and context ahead of the views seen at Tokyo Tower. A few days beforehand, my friends and I visited Tokyo Skytree, a similar exhibit with a high-up view of Tokyo and it’s surrounding neighborhoods. Both Skytree and Tokyo Tower provided a similar understanding of Tokyo’s massive scale: in short, it’s more massive than one can even imagine. Tokyo stretches on for what seems like forever, but incredibly, it manages to retain some sense of vertical density despite its seemingly endless sprawl. Because of this, Tokyo has retained many elements of walkability and easy access to public transport without the need for a car in the vast majority of neighborhoods in the city. These elements are retained because of the density allowed for in Tokyo’s neighborhoods outside of the immediate downtown.
Unfortunately, the U.S. cannot say the same. Many American cities suffer from the reality that as you leave the downtown region, you only see detached single-family neighborhoods and resultantly, car-dependent infrastructure. As the readings demonstrate, Japan's design avoided this end result by instead allowing for residential density throughout the city, not just limiting it to a small region of downtown. It was evident during our visit to Tokyo tower that this approach to urban planning, while not perfect, ultimately led to a more inclusive and better designed city that can hold more people in a more efficient way than the vast majority of other cities ever could.
The Kabuki reading was relevant to our viewing of the Kabuki performance because it reminded me how viewing a performance in-person is a completely different experience than reading about it from an article. Truly, the performance, while dense and tiring at times, was something spectacular in the sense of how much work time and effort went into dressing the actors, making sure they execute their roles well, and ensuring that the whole production holds true to historical standards.

Dashcam Chronicles: OwnSilent RN46 Protects Delivery Driver from False Liability Claim
Incident Overview:
On July 22, 2028, Marcus Johnson, a delivery driver for a local courier company in Denver, Colorado, was tasked with delivering a package to a residential neighborhood. It was a relatively quiet day on the road, and Marcus was driving his company van on a two-lane residential street. As he approached an intersection with no stop sign, a blue Nissan Altima was parked at the corner, apparently waiting to turn left onto the street.
As Marcus moved forward through the intersection, the Nissan suddenly pulled out into his lane, directly into the path of his van. Despite Marcus’s immediate attempt to brake and avoid a collision, the front of the Nissan made contact with the side of Marcus's van. The impact wasn’t severe, but it caused some damage to the van’s front bumper and the Nissan’s rear door.
The driver of the Nissan, Ashley Lewis, immediately jumped out of her car and claimed that Marcus had failed to yield to her while she was trying to turn. She insisted that Marcus had cut her off, and that the accident was completely his fault. Ashley was very vocal, telling Marcus that she would be filing a liability claim with his company’s insurance, and that she had witnesses who would back up her version of the story.
Marcus was confused and frustrated by the accusation. He knew that he had not cut anyone off, and that Ashley had made a risky maneuver by pulling out in front of him. Still, he felt vulnerable because he was unsure if the witnesses Ashley mentioned would side with him or her. Thankfully, Marcus had installed the OwnSilent RN46 Dashcam in his van just a few months earlier, after experiencing a similar close call on the road.
Role of Dashcam Evidence:
Marcus quickly retrieved the footage from his OwnSilent RN46 Dashcam and shared it with the officer who had arrived at the scene. The dashcam footage, with its 4K ultra-clear resolution, captured the entire incident with remarkable detail.
The video clearly showed that Ashley had pulled out from the stop sign without checking for oncoming traffic. The dashcam provided a clear side-view of the intersection, showing that Marcus had been driving straight through the intersection when the Nissan suddenly swerved into his lane. Despite Marcus’s best efforts to brake and avoid the collision, the video showed that Ashley’s car made contact with his van as she tried to squeeze through a gap in traffic.
The timestamped footage also showed that Marcus had been driving within the speed limit, and that the accident occurred because of Ashley’s risky and unprepared move into the intersection. It was clear from the video that Marcus was not at fault. He had been driving cautiously and had no opportunity to avoid the collision due to Ashley’s sudden and unsafe maneuver.
In addition, the audio recording from the dashcam captured the conversation between Marcus and Ashley, where she immediately blamed him for the incident. The dashcam recorded Marcus calmly explaining that Ashley had pulled out in front of him, while Ashley continued to insist that Marcus had cut her off. The footage clearly highlighted that Ashley had made no attempt to yield before pulling out into traffic, and her accusations were completely unfounded.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings:
When the police officer reviewed the footage, the officer immediately understood that Marcus was not liable for the accident. The video made it clear that Ashley had failed to yield when pulling out of the intersection, and that Marcus had done everything he could to avoid the collision. The footage showed that the accident occurred in broad daylight, with clear visibility, so there was no excuse for Ashley’s careless driving.
The officer took note of the dashcam footage and added it to the official police report, which stated that Ashley Lewis was at fault for the accident. The report also cited her for failing to yield and unsafe driving.
Marcus’s insurance company reviewed the footage and quickly exonerated him from any liability. The evidence from the dashcam proved that Marcus had not caused the accident and had tried his best to avoid it. The insurance company informed Marcus that his driving record would not be affected, and they would work with Ashley’s insurance company to resolve the damages.
Ashley, realizing that her story was not supported by the footage, dropped the claim and accepted responsibility for the accident. She was forced to pay for the damages to both her car and Marcus’s van.
Lessons from the Incident:
This incident demonstrates the importance of having a dashcam to protect yourself from false accusations and fraudulent claims. In Marcus’s case, Ashley tried to shift blame onto him, claiming that he had caused the accident by cutting her off. Without the dashcam footage, Marcus could have easily been found liable, especially with Ashley’s witnesses supporting her false claims.
The OwnSilent RN46 Dashcam provided irrefutable evidence of Marcus’s innocence. The clear, timestamped footage captured every crucial moment of the incident, showing that Marcus was driving safely and had no part in causing the collision. The wide-angle lens ensured that the footage provided a comprehensive view of the scene, while the audio recording captured the conversation between Marcus and Ashley, further supporting his version of events.
In addition, the dashcam footage helped resolve the case quickly and efficiently, saving Marcus from unnecessary legal battles and potential liability.
Emotional Impact:
Marcus felt a huge sense of relief when he reviewed the dashcam footage. Initially, he had been frustrated and anxious about the situation, especially when Ashley made such a confident accusation. The possibility of being held responsible for something he didn’t do was weighing on him, but once he saw the footage, he knew that he was in the clear.
The dashcam gave Marcus a sense of security and empowerment, knowing that evidence was on his side. He felt confident that he wouldn’t have to fight a false claim or risk losing his job because of something that wasn’t his fault.
OwnSilent RN46 Dashcam – Your Ultimate Protection on the Road
With the OwnSilent RN46 Dashcam, you can drive with peace of mind, knowing that your side of the story is always recorded and protected. With 4K ultra-clear resolution, wide-angle coverage, and timestamped footage, the RN46 Dashcam captures every moment on the road, helping you defend yourself in case of false accusations or liability claims.
