My honest review of The Marvels (2023):
6/10
I really don't want to be negative about this movie, but I really don't think this movie was great. I enjoyed it, but I don't think this movie was great.
First of all: the plot structure. Everyone says it is messy, and I didn't understand what they meant until I watched it. It was incredibly rushed - there was no clear structure, and things just happened. Nothing was developed, and when it was developed, it wasn't developed enough. There was no character development in this film, outside of Carol and Monica talking twice, and Carol doing something towards the end.
The beginning was incredibly messy and just felt like random scenes were thrown around. You don't need to see Wandavision, Ms Marvel or Secret Invasion, but that doesn't help. This film desperately needed to be 2 hours and 30 minutes. So much needed developing. So much needed to be done.
Kamala and the Khan's were excellent. Iman Vellani was excellent, and Zenobia Shroff was brilliant as Muneeba Khan.
Brie Larson and Teyonah Parris are doing the best they can, and that best is amazing. But the plot doesn't allow them to act like real people, and their respective characters suffer a lot.
Park Seo Joon as Prince Yan was... eh. He was okay, but Aladna was just... why? The Aladnans were just there.
Zawe Ashton as Dar-Benn was great. Her motivations, plan and acting were great. But again, she suffers from the same problems as Carol and Monica - there is no time to flesh her out. Nevertheless, she remains intimidating and fun to watch.
There's a scene with the flerkens that's executed beautifully. But in the grand scheme of things, they took up valuable screen time that I would have preferred being seen on the characters.
I'm just numb. This movie could have done so much. It didn't. I desperately hope this is a Thor: The Dark World scenario and the 3rd Captain Marvel movie, but I don't trust the MCU with Carol, Monica and Kamala anymore.
At the end of the day, I'm going to keep making memes and fanfic because I love these characters. I love what they can be. I love the people hidden beneath them.
I know why people love this movie, and I absoloutely know why people hate it.
At the end of the day, I just want to rewatch Captain Marvel and Ms Marvel and Wandavision. I want to see Carol act like a character again. I want to see Kamala be where she is strongest. As much as I don't like Wandavisions involvement with Monica, I just want to see Monica have motivations.
6/10 is the highest I can give it. Other than I enjoyed it, I don't know how to describe my feelings towards this movie. I don't want to. Guys, I really tried to love this movie, but I can't.

i’m going to make fiddauthor art with fidds wearing his wedding ring and you are NOT going to like it
big obligatory banner that says “cheating is bad don’t do it i just like stories with relationship drama”
closeted, internally homophobic gay men who are married with kids has to be the trope i’m weakest to. no person involved is escaping the despair brought on by a relationship built on a well intentioned, desperate lie, born out of a desire to be normal and good
he WANTED to love her so fucking badly. he felt no ill will towards her and he loves their son more than words can say. he thought the attraction, the way she felt about him, would come with time. it didn’t. he doesn’t want to hurt her yet was doomed to from the start, and he’s truly, truly sorry. this does not absolve him of anything whatsoever and she has the full right to never want to speak with him again. he lied! he pretended to feel the same when he never once felt anything but platonic affection! he’s been in love with someone else this whole fucking time! and their kid… he’s caught in the middle of it all, too young to understand why his father would hurt his family like this.
and then he disappears and never comes back. imagine you’re 5 and your dad goes to the middle of the woods with his buddy for science shit, all of the sudden your parents are yelling on the phone and signing papers, and then he goes MIA. for years.
imagine your husbands “buddy” was the one he was thinking of all this time, not you, never you. and the first chance he gets to run away from you, he takes, and you should have been suspicious by the rushed frenzy of it all, the phone calls getting shorter and shorter until it fizzles to nothing. he forgot to get you a christmas gift. he hand-made him two. there has to be something wrong with you, it has to be your fault. you wish you married the man he becomes when he’s in his presence.
he folded when you started questioning him directly - he’d been to neurotic to ever be a good liar. you thought he was the one. he thought you were nice.
by the time the divorce is finalized he’s different in a wrong way. confused, angry, forgetful, insane - if the giant homicidal robot pterodactyl you’ve been harassed by is any indication. (he’s had a bad habit of building homicidal robots when he’s mad since they met -engineer things- but it was never directed at her - thankfully it never actually does anything) he’s clearly abusing drugs - you’d feel bad if he hadn’t abandoned you with the burden of explaining why your son can’t see his father anymore.
it’s a rotten bit of your soul, but time heals you. you move on and no longer think of him. trust in your career. find a man who truly loves you with no motives attached. raise your kid to be a good man. and in a fashion not unlike shakespearean dramatic irony, this makes him move to gravity falls to find and take care of his father. you couldn’t care less what hee doing now, but damn it, it’s his father, what is the kid supposed to do? but its futile- he appears to have no remorse, hell, no memory of the incident in the first place. (this isn’t his fault but how are they supposed to know that?) so he grows bitter and cold just like his mother used to be.
imagine that.
all over a mans inability to do anything but live in denial. to force himself to live in a box and pine like a dying man over the right one at the wrong time, destined to crash and burn. to take denial to a new level- a cult, brain damaging radiation, a total ego death - just to take the edge off. take off that damn wedding ring

Charles' thing is that he wants to feel alive and that's part of the reason why he decided to never move on to the afterlife right? Meanwhile Edwin thinks Charles will move on and that he'll be alone again because 'he isn't good with people'.
But then when the Night Nurse shows up a second time Charles is ready to go wherever -including Hell- as long as Edwin shouldn't have to go back there, meanwhile Edwin refuses that they be split up, and both are okay with being sent together to the Lost and Found Department to be sorted out later as long as they're together-

Everyday im still kind of shocked that nanago is considered a rarepair like-- i get why it became like that after hidden inv because satosugu but like-- even in season 1 and the early stuff, it was still a rarepair like-- how
The chemistry is all there-- the Straight Man and the Comic, Strongest Wildcard Goofball and Middling Reliable Adult, Strict Mom and Cool Dad, and on and on
Theres also good history between them, albeit its not much-- they both form an understanding of each other as they both lose their best friends and develop different mindsets to deal with the trauma of their childhood and their work to come to the same conclusion of Needing To Help And Save People
Theres also like-- a lot of themes you can explore with them too. With the recent gege interview abt gojo, we know that bro is overworked to hell and back but keeping a smiley face and a facade up. Contrast that to Nanami who absolutely hates overwork, and is very clear and upfront abt his gripes and criticisms abt sorcerers and sorcerer society. And speaking of that, we can also explore their differences and similarities on how they view sorcerer society and how they want to deal with it-- nanami wanting the kids to stay kids for as long as he can, and gojo with his hands figuratively tied, having to train them into the equivalent of child soldiers just so they can live
Like-- i can keep going, theres so much potential in here-- how TF is nanago a rare ship???

look how defeated he looks as it dawns at him that Tommy is gonna have a child, a child, he lost a child, he has another child whom he is terrified of losing, children are not an easy topic for him.
Tumblr media
The contradiction of emotions is so strange to witness, Tommy is rightfully giddy about having a child, but my dude read the room, Joel now feels that hole in his heart deeper than ever before. In his mind he failed as a father, he failed at the one job he was trusted to do. His baby looked at him for guidance, for protection, and in his mind he failed her.
Tumblr media
"Just because life stopped for you, doesn't mean it has to stop for me" and that hurts because Joel stopped his life to come look for Tommy, Tess died because they needed that car battery. I just don't get why he would say it that way, don't get me wrong he is valid but why the fuck would you say it so hurtfully to your brother who lost hid baby daughter in his arms, while he was carrying her...

Saw a tweet saying mae is the real villain with 23k likes and how noa will make her pay in the next one for her betrayal and is crazy bc the ones saying that are men! Like, them hating mae is misogyny at this point idc. bc what do they mean when they say they wanted noa to beat her to death???
Lots of fictional male characters share traits with mae (and have even done worse) actual villains are loved by them, but as soon as they see a woman not being the number one supporter of their male lead they lose it.
It's the same old story: morally questionable and complex gray characters are fan favorites as long as they're men. If the character is a woman and, on top of that, has the AUDACITY not to be the protagonist's number one supporter, unconditional girlfriend or caring mother then she's practically the reincarnation of Beelzebub.
Just yesterday Iwas thinking the same thing you mentioned because I was watching a bunch of Mae haters on TikTok, and it's no coincidence that THEY WERE ALL men, and precisely those who defended her were women. The hate was based on totally absurd arguments typical of someone with the argumentative comprehension capacity of an amoeba. Special mention to the macho of Reddit for having the same two malfunctioning neurons that lead them to hate Mae with zero coherence because then they are the biggest fans of Koba, for example, excusing his actions with the argument that "he suffered a lot because of humans" when, in fact, Mae has also suffered a lot because of the apes.
But in the end, it's as you say: the problem isn't the actions but the character's gender. Women in fiction are relegated to being lovers, unconditional friends or self-sacrificing mothers. Anyone who deviates from that role, especially in such male-dominated franchises, is condemned to bear all the male misogyny of the internet.

rewatching the first episode of Hannibal and holy shit I forgot how good this is but it's actually insane that Brian fuller set up the ep like this, he introduces will and Hannibal by first briefly showing them at their core, at the darkest, most vile part of them---we get a glimpse behind the curtain---and then its gone, the curtain is snapped shut and we see their masks, their human suits.
Will empathizes with killers because he likes it, and he wants to kill but he refuses to give into the urge because he knows how much he'll like it and he won't be able to stop. So he lives vicariously through other killers, satisfying his own dark urge by feeding it little morsels of secondhand blood lust. Every crime scene he works gives the urge something that satisfies it, not enough for it to grow, but enough for it be sate. Enough that he can ignore it for long enough that he can walk around and be Professor Will Graham who is Weird, Brash, and Non-sociable.
And Hannibal is a cannibal at night and a psychiatrist by morning.
