it is healing to come onto this blog and see basic respect for diasbility after being in other corners of the fandom and reading the words “snowkit could never be a warrior because he wouldnt know what anything is. he wouldnt even know what a clan is because nobody could explain it to him” said in full seriousness

Im..... That statement is so ableist I cannot even imagine the worldview you'd need to have in order to come up with that.

They really think the only way anyone learns anything is through verbal-speaking-words-noises? No one has ever observed something before? Not even once?

This is beyond touching grass, this person just fell out of the fucking Jurassic Period when all they had was ferns and stegosaurs.

OH YES. I remember my first day of Society Lessons as a hearing person, where the everything was explained to me. Via Audiobook. FIRST they spoke and said, "you are standing on the ground." It was a life changing revelation, and the world began to spin.

But it did not stop.

THEN they said, "there are fingers on your hands." The sensation of flesh and bone crackling into existence is indescribable, but I did not yet know pain, until they told me, "that hurts." I began screaming immediately.

And yet... it continued.

They explained so much. Chairs. Tables. Walls. The sky. Frogs. Ionizing radiation. Breathing. I was told all of it, in one sitting, and only then did I understand. Only when my ears were bursting with normal hearing knowledges, did they begin... my final test.

A strange wall-chair-finger emerged from the sky-of-the-wall, stood on the ground several times, until it was in front of me. A second one came behind it, this one slimmer. The audiobook gave these things names;

Human. Father. Mother. Door. Walking. It was completely impossible to know what these things were until that very moment.

I watch a human dip a hook into water and produce a fish, and I recall my Society Lessons where they called that "fishing." I am decked in the face by a nefarious hooligan, and I have only the audiobook to thank when I know I have been "punched" by a "bad guy." It was only the magic of verbal-speaking-words-noise that made me understand that there are "other people" and that they "do stuff."

Sometimes, even, in "groups."

Before the Society Lessons Audiobook, I knew nothing. I was pure, innocent, uncorrupted by concepts such as "parents" and "door." I am grateful every day that there is no such concept as "being shown things" or "simple logical reasoning" or "looking."

Blessed be those amongst us who escape the horrors of the Society Lessons Audiobook. I pray that you never learn what anything is. Be free! Free as a bird, which also knows nothing and famously cannot learn. 🤗

DEAF/HOH FOLLOWERS I'm losing my mind do you want me to bump a 'Hearing Disabilities Herb Guide' to the top of my priorities? Something you can use to bludgeon whackadoodles like that. This is ridiculous

Obviously not a MEDICINE guide but like; common causes of hearing disability in clan cats. Accommodations for hearing loss vs congenital deafness. Actual difficulties of not having that sense Clan-by-Clan. Debunking of misconceptions like... not being able to learn APPARENTLY.

If you were to put countries on a sliding scale of 'most closely connected and tied to their people living amongst them having friends amongst them and actively seeking ways of engaging with them' versus 'existing purely in the work for government/military as required and the only meaningful relationships they have is with other countries'... where would you put certain nations?

Say France with his casual moving and advise giving ways (radio show or simply having conversations with people on the street), America and Canada with the semi-close but still distant YouTube channels and living in suburban areas or England and Japan with their minders/secretaries that they are close with but otherwise don't venture outside of a small circle and live in the countryside versus Spain who didn't even notice his people were having one of the worst internal conflicts in modern history during his civil war.

he tells them all about the louvre, since that is where they’re bound to go after paying. he tells them about the notre dame and about the seine and about the history of paris. remus can tell, by the way his tongue curls around the words and by his passionate voice, that it was not the first, and it would not be the last, time he tells someone about his city.

when their order arrives, sirius thanks the waitress, and strikes a small conversation with her; they seem to know each other, by the way she smiles, all plump lips and dark, warm brown eyes. she flicks her curls over her shoulder and puts an arm on sirius’ shoulder, and remus’ breath hitches a little, in the back of his throat.

she sets their drinks and treats on the table and she elegantly leaves; sirius’ eyes trail at her.

sirius gestures to the table, inviting everyone to take their order. lily smiles at remus — although they had met just days before, on the plane, he feels like he’s known her for ages. she’s lighthearted and warm and fierce, and she’s exactly the kind of person remus needs in his life.

“so,” she says, looking at sirius as she took a sip from her coffee, “sirius. have you ever imagined yourself moving out of france? somewhere else, maybe?”

sirius shakes his head. “paris will always be my home.” there’s a tinge of accent to his voice, obviously, that remus finds charming. sirius leans back in his chair, elegantly and with not much thought to it, and puts his arm on the headrest.

“i see,” lily answers. “you know, i can’t blame you, paris really is beautiful.”

“they don’t call it the city of love for nothing.” he grins, because he doesn’t smile. remus has noticed that; he smirks, or grins, and remus would like to see it for the rest of his life, thank you very much.

dorcas nudges remus. “come on, say something. i know you want to talk to him, don’t be a coward.”

but remus had never been known to be exactly brave. so, he sits in silence and smiles as sirius falls into conversations with the other tourists again.

Giving nicknames, testing boundaries (Patreon)

Rough week, stobin daydreaming time.

Steve and Robin taking off to Europe together post canon. Starting with Paris, where Robin gets to kiss a girl on the Eiffel Tower. Steve gets his hands on a camcorder somehow (maybe his dad got one in '83 when they first hit the non-profit market) and instead of postcards they send tapes to Hawkins.

(please ignore how heavy and expensive that would have been compared to postcards, though I think the blank tapes themselves wouldn't have been that pricey by '87)

Each tape is thirty minutes long (technically limitations) and consists of several short scenes of Steve and Robin being silly near some landmark. Usually only one of them is visible, but both are audible in every clip. The party watches the tapes together, and Dustin makes copies for everyone who asks.

And sometimes for two people who don't.

The Harringtons aren't especially interested in their son's inexpert camera work as he tries to keep all of an enthusiastic Robin in frame, but they do know someone who works for a subsidiary of TWA, and is desperate for programming for their new channel.

So when Steve and Robin get back to Hawkins, they have an intriguing job offer.
