it's easy to read the situation between li tongguang, ruyi, and yuanzhou as a love triangle on a superficial level, but looking even one step further, it's clear that there's no triangle about it. li tongguang is obsessed with ren xin; ning yuanzhou is devoted to ren ruyi. ltg's obsession is fervent and all consuming, but it's not devotion. like ruyi herself notes, his feelings to her are on the basis of her as a mother figure in his life, as a replacement for what he never received from his mother. is there an element of romantic/sexual love/desire to it? maybe. more likely he's deluded himself into thinking that, because the truth is, it's doubtful that ltg even understands what love is (platonic, filial, familial, romantic, all of the above, etc), because he has no basis for understanding. ruyi's teachings and actions towards him are the closest thing he has to hold up as an example. what he wants is ren xin, is a replica of the master he had. he doesn't want ruyi, because he doesn't actually care about ruyi. therefore, he doesn't care if she's sad, angry, mad; he just can't bear her 'abandoning' him. we saw this way back when she first meet and left him, both at thirteen and seventeen. although he distrusts her first, she saves his life and cares for him in the way no one else has, hence her first being raised on a platform in his mind. when she leaves for good, ending their master-disciple relationship/training, even though it's for official business and she's not abandoning him, in his mind that's exactly what it is. so now that she's in his life again, he won't let her leave again. he was powerless before, a child with no proper name, but now he's a recognized member of the imperial family, a man who can meet her as 'equals' (even when that's far from the truth). as a child, he could only cling to her legs and beg her, but now he has the power to keep her by his side. it's telling that when he finally gets confirmation of her identity, it's not ning yuanzhou he seeks to harm (even though he detests him and their relationship), but yang ying. yang ying is ruyi's new disciple, and as ltg doesn't know she's a woman, he only sees her as his direct replacement.
ning yuanzhou, on the other hand, is devoted to ruyi. he wants to build a new life and future with her, instead of slotting her into a spot in the life he already has. he's someone who accompanies her on walks and makes her midnight snacks, who holds her when she needs to be held and lets her go when she needs to do things on her own. when she speaks her mind, he listens, even when it makes him discontent/it's not what he wanted/wants to hear. he sees her unabashedly as his equal, and though he acknowledges her skills and abilities, or points out her naivety, he never does it to belittle her; to him, she is his peer, deserving of the highest honor and respect. he trusts her to have his back, and she has come to trust him to have her. he did what she might have thought no man would ever do: he proved himself reliable, so she came to rely on him. yuanzhou gives her freedom and autonomy as both ren ruyi and ren xin. of course they run into problems, but they both learn and grow from them, as individuals and as a couple. yuanzhou's belief in her is unwavering, but adaptable, whereas ltg's is unwavering, but frozen in time, disallowing for any new information to be presented. yuanzhou works with ruyi to accept the changes thrown her way; he seeks the core behind her actions in order to better understand her. li tongguang cannot accept the changes in ruyi's character, because they run contrary to the master he has on a pedestal in his mind.
what li tongguang wants is to return to the past, but yuanzhou offers ruyi the promise of a future, even one that might never come to fruition. there's no triangle about it.
#star stumbles#my thoughts#a journey to love#一念关山#cdrama#written right after watching ep 26#hope i explained it well#honestly i have a lot more thoughts about this ep and ruyi/ltg but that's still a separate post that will happen. well sometime#maybe after ep 32 idk#it's just the juxtaposition between entering a room that is a shrine to the person she is trying to leave behind#and going home to a man who makes her wonton soup and accompanies her on her revenge journey#who offers his own insights and thoughts but lets her lead the way when it comes down to it.#he gives her ultimate control over her own journey. and ruyi who has never had that freedom of course is drawn to him#oh and one more point that didn't make it in#ruyi's confrontation about how ltg is unwilling to give up his power and success is further proof of his obsession =/= love or devotion#it's not that ning yuanzhou WOULD necessarily give up those things if she asked him to#but he would respect her enough to let her go if he knew he was unwilling to give up his position#of course nyz right now is someone who is planning on retiring and living a quiet life away from it all#which is appealing to ruyi#but ltg obviously won't give up his name and success. he wanted an imperial name but now that he got it the avenue has opened up#we saw his big dreams early on in eps 4-5 (before the character butchery...though i can't really call it that since it makes sense#but still drives me insane)#and of course he won't! for a neglected illegitimate child with no power even gaining a sliver of it is just the beginning#and ruyi is honestly so far from the court in that she might have been close with empress zhaojie#but her understanding of the court is very ignorant. not in a bad way but she was a weapon so of course she didn't have to understand that#she just struck when told to. the power games of the court are basic knowledge but they still shock and confuse her#so it's also a thing about living two different lives and different paths#even though yuanzhou and her are on different ones theirs are still compatible#at this point in their lives. as they said earlier if they had met earlier they probably would be trying to kill each other

me and the worstie watching the cycle continue as direct result of our actions we have complicated feelings about together <3 on a more serious note, no one ever talks about how touga is present In The Arena for nanami’s duels and i think we should fix that. it’s sort of an unhinged detail that reveals so much about the kiryuu sibling dynamic and also i do just think it’s funny (agonising) that anthy and touga have to stand in the arena together like 😐
Tumblr media
[ID: a shot from episode 32 of the anime ‘revolutionary girl utena’. in it, anthy and touga stand side by side, watching nanami’s second duel with utena (off-screen) with unreadable expressions. /end ID]

anyway did you know that someone uploaded the tv-n subs for toqger on archive.org
it has all the episodes, plus the gaim crossover episode that’s supposed to be watched sometime early on. the gaim crossover can be skipped, there’s like one (1) funny scene that got big on tumblr so just look at that post and that’s all you need. it does *not* have the films or specials, but this upload does
Galaxy Line SOS, listed as ‘Ressha Sentai Toqger Movie’: takes place between eps 20 and 21, it’s a cute and fun movie :)
Farewell, Ticket! The Wasteland Super ToQ Battle!!, listed as ‘Ressha Sentai Toqger Special DVD’: takes place between ep 26 and 27 and is MANDATORY
ToQger vs. Kyoryuger, listed basically as-is: takes place between ep 35 and 36, a character from Galaxy Line S.O.S comes back for a cameo, also a cute and fun movie
Ninninger vs. ToQger - post-series, I don’t remember this one and it’s not on the playlist so it’s probably not important
They Went and Came Back Again Ressha Sentai ToQGer: Super ToQ 7gou of Dreams, listed as ‘Ressha Sentai Toqger Returns’: post series, also pretty mandatory
as for ‘why toei’s baby train toy commercial is worth watching’:
It’s written for children in an intelligent way, there are a lot of lessons that I thought were delivered kindly and conscientiously
It’s written intelligently in general, both the heroes and the villains have goals with a lot of room for interesting progression; the heroes start with trying to regain their memories, the villains start with trying to resurrect the emperor of darkness, and both storylines are balanced really well. Some of those twists and developments Got Me
It’s mostly lighthearted, very sincere, and some of the emotional beats are really devastating… episode 32 does make me tear up every watch
The fight choreography is fun! Since the theme is imagination, they can get pretty goofy/playful in some eps
One of the gimmicks is that the sentai team can switch colors, which means while it has a traditionally structured sentai team—male red, 2 girls and 3 guys—there are times where the gals are red and the guys are pink, and I like that :)
The villain aesthetics

Middle (sort of) of 2024 list - cdrama edition.
Yeah I realize it's neither the end of the year, nor half a year, but what's the point of being predictable? It's also gonna make my end of year post easier. This is only going to cover cdramas that aired in 2024; if I watched it but it was made in a different year, it’s not on the list.
DRAMAS WATCHED
(In order of liking from least to most as opposed to pure quality; I am including if I’ve seen enough to make up my mind; yes I realize that’s inaccurate, but that’s my list)
42 My Divine Emissary - it's actually a pretty good drama year when the worst cdrama I've checked out this year is merely utterly shrill and brain dead but not horrifyingly offensive to good taste.
41 Fight for Love - they had wonderful actors and a great premise and utterly wasted it. There might someday be a good drama about a female general torn between a royal and an enemy general but this ain't it.
40 Peacock in Wonderland - I am a few decades too old for this brain dead fest but I am glad Zhou Jun Wei is not canceled at least.
39 Her Fantastic Adventures - honestly, this, MDE and Revenger are all the same type of subgenre - they aren't offensive they are just as empty as air. This also suffers from casting an utter dud as ML and a charisma boat as SML. Why?
38 Lady Revenger Returns from the Fire - the main thing I remember from this is that Miles Wei must have stolen the wig maker's parking spot. That wig is the one that should have gone into the fire.
37 Your Trap/Imprisoned Love - the plot of this mini made no sense but the softcore vibes of sanitized 1990s cinemax were on point!
36 Fox Matchmaker: The Red Moon Pact - it's so pretty, so full of gorgeous costumes and actors and I enjoyed the first few eps, but ultimately it was like watching colorful paint dry. It was so dull, I couldn't even hate watch it, and that is more damning than anything.
35 The Unexpected Marriage - cutesy dumb period romcom. Could be worse, not that this is much of a praise.
34 Love’s Rebellion - so twee, so precious, so full of cutesy awful CGI and actors who aren't bothering. I am not sure why Zhang Linghe and Jing Tian are in this mess that looks like rainbow vomited on a xianxia set.
33 My Wife's Double Life - her life may be double but her brain is only half.
32 Jade's Fateful Love - I lost some braincells trying this one, but (a) it's gorgeous and (b) no transmigration say you? Multiple transmigration in first ep alone! Good for you, makers!
31 Follow My Heart - how do you have Luo Yunxi, Song Yi and Cheng Lei and waste them so utterly? First few eps were nice and then it's like exercise in how much you can tolerate before you call it quits.
30 Sword and Fairy 4 - it's kinda a mess but I loved the actors and some of the plots and you can do worse.
29 Blossoms in Adversity - dumb as a set of particularly dumb bricks and ML I don't think could act if his life depended on it, but it was strangely addictive and I watched it often before better dramas. It's just a genuinely good time somehow!
28 Judge Dee - it's not you it's me in action. It's smart and gorgeous and well acted, I just don't do procedurals.
27 The Substitute Princess’ Love - it's like some of those trashy web novels I enjoy. It was clearly cut, its budget was equivalent to loose change found in the pockets of makes of Fox Spirit Matchmaker, but it was a surprisingly fun watch, though I enjoyed the first half better than the second. Also as a drama old, it was a fun blast from the past seeing Dylan Kuo (if you have never watched the old twdrama The Outsiders, what are you even doing with your life?)
26 Rise from the Ashes - a wacky as hell mini where reborn FL wreaks revenge with help of her fake uncle as they carry on as some sort of Borgia/Phillip II of Spain fame hybrid. If you don't need to use your brain, you could have a worse time.
25 The Legend of Heroes - it suffered from me seeing other versions of this tale before that I liked more and not loving how dark looking it is but that cast is A+ and Wang Hongyi was a revelation as Yang Kang.
24 Beauty Strategy - a mini of what a few years ago would have been a proper angsty drama of palace scheming enemies while lovers, powerless emperor etc etc. Honestly, I loved it.
23 Lovesickness - this year's gender-reversed Ancient Love Song, not as artistic or good but still a good time about a woman traveling back in time and falling for a powerful but doomed duke.
22 Fragments of Kylin - demon slayer falls for a demon; this one came out of nowhere and didn't have much of a budget but is surprisingly lovely.
21 Enslaved by Love - the only reason it's not the most fucked up drama on this list is because Shadow Sect, Palace Shadows and Burning Flames exist. The ML is toxic enough to be banned by the Geneva convention but FL does get some of her own back and also if you ever wanted to see blindness curing sex, boy do I have a drama for you!
20 Secrets of the Shadow Sect - head of sect lady and her very very subby bodyguard. What's not to love?
19 Palace Shadows: Between Two Princes - ML pretends to be his own twin, bdsm and sluttiness ensues. I cannot even explain how wild this drama is but the acting is on point and way way fun!
18 Dashing Youth - I had no expectations of this drama (either indifferent to or dislike everyone in the cast, wuxia and wuxia-adjacent is rarely my genre, the number of characters is huge) but I loved how under its bright colors, it eventually gets very dark (it's quite old school that way) and somehow I am invested in everyone in the huge cast. This being a prequel to The Blood of Youth makes us know the fates of many of the characters and this adds the air of tragic inevitability to it all.)
17 The Last Immortal - a surprisingly sweet and touching xianxia that works largely because Zhao Lusi and Wang Anyu are so so so so solid separately and together.
16 Burning Flames - the most gonzo drama on this list. I love it for committing to insanity as it should (if you pick insane source material, commit.) Humans taking on the worst Gods since Olympus, fur and chains, sentient crystal FL, ML who goes from Crown Prince to mine slave to rebel leader, bare chests and fur, demon elves, a villain that leaches color from the world - this drama has everything and I loved its unhinged glory.
15 Lost You Forever 2 - it would have been higher except it fell apart in the last third so badly I am still wondering how the makers could misunderstand their own characters and their own narratives so badly. The first season was a masterpiece. This is a hot mess.
14 The Princess Royal/The Grand Princess - I am in the minority of finding this drama very mid. The acting was fine (except for former eunuch dude), the writing was fine, but I never really got invested alas. I don't even know why. I think it's just not my type of narrative; there was no intensity.
13 Different Princess - a ridiculous amount of fun and ship about an author falling through to her own novel and falling for the villain.
12 Sword and Fairy 6 - I love this tale; the young OTP (a whale weapon and a clone of her trigger? More wholesome than you think) who are so ride or die for each other, the other amazing characters (sect leader who has to live as a man and her "twin" who is an ancient trapped spirit, a wolf demon, etc...) It's just genuinely good and proof that targeted to younger audience doesn't have to be bad.
11 In Blossom - sure, we all know JJY can't act, but the narrative was so fun and the visuals were so gorgeous and Liu Xueyi so gorgeous and magnetic in his first proper Male Lead role, it was all worth it. I liked the first half when they were still cautious of each other more than the second but this is just a good time!
10 Hard to Find - my second favorite mini on the list, this is an aesthetic feast. The doomed couple from enemy kingdoms, the vengeance, the twists - if ever a mini deserved to be a proper drama, this would be it. But alas, if it was they'd probably not let it.
9 The Double - unhinged web novel vibe done so perfectly in the inimitable Yu Zheng style. The leads were so good even the amazing villains didn't truly steal the show. Like with a lot of cdramas, it lost a lot of steam in second half for me, but still a great watch.
8 Fortune Writer - the best mini this year and better than most "proper" cdramas (Douban raters agree), this tale of villains in love fighting the narrative has a lot to say about writing cliches and writing conventions. I love how clever it is and how it actually made me care for the characters.
7 Tender Light - except for that ending, this was in the running for my favorite 2024 cdrama. The writers' lack of ability to commit and carry through pushed it lower but otherwise it's a genuine masterpiece. The acting, the chemistry, the looping narrative, what it has to say about abuse and complicity of society and blazing your own moral path is something else.
6 Derailment - who knew a little quasi scifi modern would be this high but this one is amazing. If you watch one modern this year, make it this one. Our FL is a rich girl a little in the future who somehow wakes up in a different timeline a few years back in the body of that universe's version of her (who is poor and has been missing) and her one connection is a young man who was in love with that universe's version of her. I don't want to say more so as not to spoil because the twists are twisty but this is EVERYTHING and also addresses transmigration, what it means to love, what is ethical etc etc. And that OTP!
5 Snowfall - a fever dream of a vampire narrative set in an alternate universe of the Republican era, it's gorgeous, passionate, hella queer and just like watching the most amazing fanfic come to life.
4 Heroes - a complete masterpiece about three men about to be on the scrapheap of history in the Qing Dynasty about to fall (a constable devoted to obsolete norms, who spent his whole life studying for the imperial exam which got canceled, the world's best swordsman in the era of guns, and a former imperial guard who emerges from prison into a different world) whose stories intersect as they search for treasure and the women and other people in their lives. This is smart, impeccably acted, filmed in a stunning way, bleak and funny at once and - I don't use the term masterpiece often but I will use it here.
3 The Legend of Shen Li - I am often indifferent to xianxia that suffers from too much CGI, hella immaturity and not enough stakes. Shen Li is everything. It's gorgeously filmed, it's adult, it gives the story time to breathe and centers it on characters and relationships. And the OTP is everything you can ever dream of - it reunites Zhao Liying and Lin Gengxin, totally healing those Princess Agents wounds - their chemistry is still utter fire but the narrative supports them every step of the way.
2 Eternal Brotherhood - if JoL2 did not come out this year, this would be my favorite cdrama of the year. It's clearly a passion project with a small budget but this complex and grim tale of three rather different sworn brothers in a world at war is gorgeous, smart, well acted, dark and inspiring at once. There are shots that take my breath away, the love stories are amazing, the pace is perfect, and ohhh our complex mainsssssss.
1 Joy of Life 2 - nothing can beat this masterpiece. The first season was perfect and somehow the second is even more perfect. It's smart, it's funny, it's heartbreaking, the cast is still impeccable and Zhang Ruoyun still gives a completely jawdropping performance as the focus of all the madness Fan Xian. If you watch only one cdrama this year, make it this one.
FAVORITE DRAMA
Joy of Life 2 - there is not one second I forwarded, not one unnecessary scene, not one weak link character. It's a smart, fierce masterpiece.
Eternal Brotherhood is a runner up - it came out of nowhere and owned my whole heart. It's the sole other cdrama this year where I did not ff a second.
WORST DRAMA
My Divine Emissary - honestly, this is a decent year because even this drama was just "forget it" not burning hate.
FAVORITE MALE CHARACTER
Fan Xian (Zhang Ruoyun), Joy of Life 2 - how could it ever be anyone but smart, irreverent, fierce, broken, idealistic, funny Fan Xian. The man who fights against the horrors of the universe, who remains human while being so larger than life. This character is everything.
Tumblr media
Runner up: Zhou Luo (Zhang Xincheng), Tender Light - idealistic loner who refuses to compromise his principles even as it would be easier to, even as it destroys his life, ZXC has always been a solid actor but here he is beyond.
Tumblr media
Alternatively, Zichuan Xiu (Yang Xuwen), Eternal Brotherhood - only way to describe Xiu is "trauma sunshine." He's funny, he's irrevocably fucked up, he is magnetic and intense and he fights for his hopeless ideals and he breaks and he keeps going.
Tumblr media
or Xing Zhi (Lin Gengxin), the lonely ancient god discovering the pleasure of life for the first time in aeons.
Tumblr media
FAVORITE FEMALE CHARACTER
Shen Li (Zhao Liying), The Legend of Shen Li - so fierce, so certain, so alive. She is a goddess but ZLY made her feel so real.
Tumblr media
Runner up: Nan Ya (Tong Yao), Tender Light - an abuse victim who keeps trying to find a way out, she's strong and damaged and complex and honestly, one of the best performances this year.
Tumblr media
Alternatively, Jiang Xiao Yuan (Liu Haocun), Derailment - she makes a character that in other hands would be boring or trite, someone I want to reach through to the screen and protect and love.
Tumblr media
NEEDS TO BE MURDERED
99% of the denizens of the town in Tender Light - selfish every day denizens monstrous because of their very everydayness - they watch abuse and choose to blame the victim and gossip and enjoy the view. I hated them all.
FAVORITE SHIP
Shen Li x Xing Zhi, The Legend of Shen Li - the chemistry, the yearning, the slow inevitable collapse into admittance, the way he protects the world and she protects him, the way they dance around each other, her being the aggressor, his surrender to forbidden emotion, their utter mutual belief in each other's competence. They are everything to me.
Tumblr media
Runner up: the OTP in Derailment. Those two went through some mind and soul breaking stuff and made it out.
Tumblr media
FAVORITE SECONDARY OTP
Amusingly enough, Fu Xin Bo is the male actor in both - the crossdressing sect leader x wolf demon OTP in Sword and Fairy 6, and First Prince x Eldest Princess in Joy of Life 2. What can I say, man knows how to pick them. Those OTPs are both utterly adorable!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If we are talking about an OTP where it's not that it's not the main but it's not a ship-centric drama so they don't get much time, then we have either Fan Xian x Lin Wan'er from Joy of Life 2 - she is his peace and sanity
Tumblr media
and Si Yilin x Ka Dan, Eternal Brotherhood - they are both such desperately good people in a mad world, tender with each other despite surrounding cruelty.
Tumblr media
NOTP
The couple in Fox Spirit Matchmaker - such pretty people, and so bland and boring and pointless together. It was kinda amazing.
FAVORITE SCENE
God, so many good scenes this year so far - Fan Xian watching the death of the old censor and the aftermath, in JoL2; his confrontation with Wan'er after she finds out about the truth behind her brother's death, the scene where he poisons Second Prince, his scene with the registrar. Xiu giving up his future to protect the surrendered soldiers only to come back and find Di Lin executed them all in EB, the scene in Ning's bedroom when he tells her how he really feels because she can't hear, the very end of that season and Di Lin striding into the light, Ka Dan and SYL's night. The last scene of LYN and his girl in Heroes, the way Heroes always intercuts the golden past of the guard and princess and the dreary present (especially when we see her bicycle spin out of control back when and her husband lose it in the present and this time there is nobody to catch her), the big reveal in Derailment and the hairwashing scene, Mi Lan touching Vamp Daddy's face as their thing in Snowfall, and the cage stuff etc etc.
BIGGEST CRUSH
Shen Zhiheng (Gao Weiguang), Snowfall - Vamp Daddy made me hormonal in a way I haven't felt for a cdrama lead since the heady days of Darren Wang in The Wolf. Those outfits, that hair, that height, that restraint, that lack of restraint. THE CHAINS
Tumblr media
BEST SCENE STEALER CHARACTER
Liu Duan Duan as Second Prince in Joy of Life 2 - what a performance! Unhinged, magnetic, pitiable, terrifying and always mesmerizing. The Second Prince is Fan Xian's foil and a worthy one. LDD is always a great actor, and with a role that actually gives him something to sink his teeth into - wow!
Tumblr media
MVP OF THE YEAR
Liu Yuning (Heroes, Eternal Brotherhood) - there is only one actor who somehow managed to be a main character in two of my five top 2024 dramas. His ruthless, driven Di Lin in EB, who knows he's doomed as the ruler's executioner but has no other way forward, and the man out of time (best swordsman in a gun era) in Heroes are both unforgettable characters in amazing dramas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ACTING SURPRISE
Ouyang Nana - Li Muge performs miracles. He made Yang Chaoye be good in Heroes (2022) and now Nana, who was always as wooden as a post, is a revelation as blind abused girl who becomes a vampire in Snowfall.
Tumblr media
NEEDS A SEQUEL
Joy of Life 2 of course - I need to see the looming confrontation between Fan Xian and the emperor, though not sure how that will pass censorship.
NEEDS SCISSORS TAKEN TO IT
FF button has cured me of finding contenders for this category, but perhaps cutting out a lot of terrible acting and lack of stage presence of "not yet a eunuch" dude in The Princess Royal, would have improved it.
TOO MANY SCISSORS TAKEN TO IT
Lost You Forever 2 - there were other issues with it, but all the cuts couldn't have helped with coherency.
TROPE THAT NEEDS TO DIE
Same as last year - the emperor cannot be irredeemable. WTF, China, you are a communist country! Though they are nibbling at the edges this year.
FAVORITE TROPE WE’VE SEEN A LOT OF
Men (and women) knowingly fighting for a doomed cause because otherwise they'd cease to be who they are.
BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT
Lost Your Forever 2 - the first season was my favorite drama of 2023 but LYF2 just fell apart so so so badly, it was almost fascinating. It totally eviscerated the characters and the meanings of the story.
BIGGEST GOOD SURPRISE
Three out of the top 5 dramas on my list are not dramas that were on my radar at all before airing - Heroes, Eternal Brotherhood and Snowfall were not anything I anticipated, let alone I realized how much I'd love them. Same for Derailment and Tender Light. This has been a year of surprises.
2024 DRAMAS I HAVEN’T SEEN THAT I MOST WANT TO WATCH
I have honestly watched almost everything I wanted. Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty 2 will be the one I will list since I still need to finish s1.
BEST NON-2024 DRAMA I’VE WATCHED IN 2024
Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty - I, a procedural and mystery hater (especially when there is close to no romance) somehow fell like a ton of bricks for this gorgeous, smart, impeccably acted show.
MOST ANTICIPATED
This is always a bad idea and kinda a curse but I really really want The Story of Pearl Girl, with Zhao Lusi and Liu Yuning because I love them separately and together and the thought of them reuniting is a dream come true. Also Eternal Brotherhood 2 (it's filmed but they can't air it until a year from EB1), Love of Nirvana with Ren Jialun and Li Landi, and Snowy Night: Timeless Love with Li Qin and Zheng Shunxi.

with misfits & magic season ii coming out on 9/25, it's time for a spreadsheet update!
links to the relevant sheets:
thisisnotthenerd's d20 stats: the og spreadsheet. where this all started.
d20 episode randomizer: watch orders! go here to see all of the episodes listed in various ways, and to pick a random episode!
d20 seating chart stats: the table and how it plays out every season. check the compiled chart for basics on each character
anyways, on to the stats!
general stats:
total episode count: 251, spread over 22 seasons.
there have been 8 main cast / intrepid heroes seasons, that make up 147 of the 251 episodes, or 58.5% of the total count. if we include oneshots in this count, the count goes up to 151 of 251, for 60.1%.
total runtime: 541:54:53. that's 3 weeks, 1 day, 13 hours, 54 minutes and 53 seconds of dimension 20.
average runtime: 2:09:32. the median is 2:08:32, which i thought was funny. the episode that's closest to the average, with 2:09:33, is 'the house always wins' from a starstruck odyssey.
some more recent updates: never stop blowing up has the third-shortest average (1:49:18), following fantasy high (1:39:43) and coffin run (1:43:16).
nsbu is the shortest of the 10-episode seasons, with a total runtime of 18:12:59. compare that to the longest 10-episode season, the seven, with a runtime of 23:55:12.
for mismag, this is our first sidequest sequel season. aabria is the first guest dm to get a sequel season of her own (matt is a little diff by virtue of brennan running acoc). it's the first KOB sequel season as well--that speaks well for d20 expanding their game systems.
mechanically, they're now using a version of nsbu called never stop making magic, so i'll be tracking stat explosions this season as well. i do think d20 is leaning towards expanding the systems they use, so we'll see how they continue to expand going forward.
it's also the first odd-numbered sidequest season, with 11 episodes. by december 5, we'll have had 16 episodes in the world of mismag, which is just under a main cast season.
player stats:
aabria's back in the dome for her 7th season, and 4th as the game master! with an 11 ep season she's up to 59 episodes, and remains the most common guest on d20. at this point she's the second in-house dm. she has the Q4 10-ep season on lock. the first sidequest sequel season is hers.
brennan is up to 21 seasons and 257 episodes (including time quangle and mismag ii). he now has 2 seasons on the right, evening his split out a little bit (3:2)
lou has dethroned ally and taken the top player spot, with 12 season and 187 episodes. he has a new fave seat, with 4 seasons in L1 as well as R3.
erika isn't far behind aabria, with 47 episodes and 6 seasons. they're split between L3 and R2 (2 each)
danielle's joining the ranks of what i consider the recurring guest cast, with 3 seasons and 22 episodes under her belt. she's behind rekha and izzy (tied with 36), erika, and aabria.
production notes:
in terms of production, the release of the time quangle episodes puts us at 45-46 episodes for 2024, depending on when the december releases start. this also sets us at a total of 268 episodes by the end of 2024.
if we include all of the adventuring parties, adventuring academies and various other d20 auxiliary content, 2024 might take the cake for the most total episodes, dethroning 2021.
i'm guessing that this was the first season filmed after brennan's parental leave, so they're probably still 6 months to a year ahead of the releases
production calendar is looking like main cast season in Q1-Q2, varying number of sidequests/oneshots through Q2 and Q3, with aabria/another guest dm in Q3-Q4. depending on when aabria's season starts, they may start the intrepid heroes' season in Q4 going into the following year. general disclaimer that this is just a guess.

♥️Reveling in Richonne - TOWL
#32: The Safety (1.04)
Tumblr media
gif cred: @riickgrimes
It was very clear up to this point in TOWL that Rick hadn't felt alive in years. But in this next scene, we learn that Michonne hadn't truly been feeling safe in years. And why? Because the only time she feels safe is with Rick Grimes. 😭
Danai wrote and delivered a line that moved me, broke me, and healed me all at the same and I have so many thoughts on it because I appreciate it so much 🥲...
So inside the gym, Rick lets Michonne know that the CRM took out the helicopter because they always destroy any evidence that they exist. Then he acknowledges that the whole building is buckling but Michonne is preoccupied with something that’s caught her attention.
When she doesn’t respond to him, Rick says, "Michonne?" and she takes hold of a note left behind by a deceased innovator, Lakshmi Patel. Michonne starts to read it aloud and it explains that this place consisted of like-minded innovators trying to live off the grid and create a new, sustained, and hopeful future.
Patel clearly lost hope in that vision saying that their motto of ‘progress and redemption through innovation’ is now like a sick joke. It’s interesting the letter then says, “I can’t face how much I have failed everyone” because that connects to something Rick feels, especially since when he chose to die he believed he died a failure.
Patel says she can’t continue to watch their mission die and apologizes. Meanwhile, Rick reads a much-needed message on the wall that says “Trust in your ability to adapt and overcome. Your past doesn’t define you.” And he def needs to hear that.

Michonne concludes reading the letter as Patel expresses her hope to be remembered as someone who refused to leave the world the same way she found it. And then Michonne gives a sad look at the body beside the letter seeing the somber fate of Patel.
Michonne knows there are some connections to be drawn between this letter and Rick so she notes how it tends to not work out and fall apart when people try to save the world their own way. And just to make it extra clear she’s talking about Rick she says, “Sound familiar?”
(Side note: I like how she stays having one side of her shirt hanging off her shoulder. There’s something casual and comfortable about it plus it’s sorta like she’s trying to get Rick to realize the shirts already hanging off and he can take the rest off if he gets it together lol)
Michonne says, “It’s just like this place. They thought they knew it all.” And then because these two can’t resist throwing some jabs in their arguments this ep she adds, “Oh except the killing of innocent people. Except that part.”
Also, I like the framing with a literal barrier between Rick and Michonne that paints the picture of the figurative barriers between them as well. Then Rick sounds the most CRM-ish he’s ever sounded when he responds saying, “The city stands.” Had me like...
Tumblr media
And Michonne felt the same because the way she sighs - she’s so over this Commando front Rick is putting on. What happened to 'this isn’t my city'? I miss that energy.
And then Rick says, “And I’ll stop the killing. I’ll find a way.” He's so prepared to just burden himself with this mission. And Michonne challenges that, mentioning just like Patel thought she’d find a way...and we see how that worked out for her.
Rick says, “You still don’t understand.” And the reason Michonne 'doesn’t understand' this is because it’s not the actual root of why Rick won’t go home. She can’t be fooled. And what Michonne does understand is that what Rick is proposing to do is basically, “Signing up for lifelong duty to the enemy.” But Rick rebuts that, “This is about ending the enemy.”
I love that Michonne is quick to respond saying, “This is not you, Rick.” She keeps trying to emphasize this because she knows him deeply and she knows this is not him being anywhere near his true self.
It's really fascinating to see this scenario play out where Rick has lost himself and is now back with the one person who knows him better than he knows himself, who can continually and accurately remind him that this version of him is not really him.
Tumblr media
gif cred: @riickgrimes
But Rick thinks there are some aspects of this version of him that are authentic as he says, “This isn’t me how? That I would give everything - my hand - my life for you. That’s not me?”
Tumblr media
gif cred: @riickgrimes
And I do love hearing Rick basically say I would give absolutely everything for you and how that's him to his core. And it is him, but also a healthy Rick would be fighting to be with her too, not just die for her.
Tumblr media
gif cred: @riickgrimes
As Rick makes his way over to her side of the barrier he yells, “This is what I need to do to keep you safe!” Safety has understandably been such a huge priority for Rick to provide since the very beginning of TWD. And when he yells this I can hear this fear in his voice that he genuinely doesn’t think there’s another way to keep her safe than the one he’s taking.
I appreciate how passionate Rick feels about keeping her safe but also…the tone of it just needed to come down a few notches because no one should be yelling at Michonne. 👌🏽
Also, this made me think about how in the season 4 finale, Rick tells Daryl “I want to keep him safe. That’s all that matters” regarding protecting Carl after the horrible night with the Claimers. Keeping his family safe is such a driving force of Rick's character and he feels the same intense devotion to protecting Michonne as he yells that he has to stay with the CRM to keep her safe.
Her safety is all that matters to him rn and he’ll do anything to preserve it. But that’s why it’s such a perfect and impactful gut punch for Michonne to then reveal where her true source of safety comes from in this scene.
Tumblr media
gif cred: @riickgrimes
Despite Rick's more ramped-up energy, Michonne, like she so often had done in the main show, (with that bullet moment from Clear being top of mind) approaches Rick's antsy energy with this arresting calm and beautiful vulnerability as she just melts my heart by softly telling Rick....
“The only time I feel safe is when I’m with you.”
Tumblr media
gif cred: @figmentof
Y’all…😭😭😭 Perfection. I love it so much and it’s truly my favorite thing she’s ever told him. 😍
Before I started writing these TOWL posts I knew two lines were basically going to need a whole post dedicated to the line alone and it’s this one here from Michonne and another line from Rick in episode 5 that we’ll talk about later. There’s just so much to unpack with Michonne telling Rick that the only time she feels safe is with him. It makes total sense.
I had made a post right after episode 4 that incorporated TWD gifs of all the moments where it was evident Michonne got her safety from Rick. And I just think it’s the sweetest thing on the planet to know that in this dangerous world, the one thing that most made Michonne feel like it’s gonna be okay is Rick. 🥹 I once saw someone say Michonne makes Rick strong and Rick makes Michonne safe and I love that. Gospel truth. 💯
It’s such a big deal too because Michonne is an incredibly strong, competent, independent woman who many look at and quickly assume she can just fearlessly protect herself. And while she can protect herself, Michonne has always had so many layers to her so she’s also vulnerable and needs to feel safe and reassured from something outside of herself too. And I love that she knows she found that in Rick. 🥹
Tumblr media
gif cred: @coolpartytimefan
Then the utter pain comes in when you realize this means for almost eight years Michonne hasn’t truly felt safe. She’s had to gracefully balance the responsibilities, fears, and expectations of motherhood and leadership as well as establish security for others and some semblance of security for herself, all without the personal safe space of her husband to turn to. It breaks me. 😥
And this is another reason I’m glad TOWL gave Rick and Michonne this space to be not just fighters, community leaders, or parents, but a husband and wife trying to find each other and themselves again.
Also, I love that she says 'the only time.' Like genuinely she’s either safe with him or not really feeling safe at all. And I feel like that’s also clear in her TWD scenes post-Rick with all the ways Michonne would cling to Rick's memory through various items. It's like she was trying to garner some sense of comfort again from the only person she ever completely let her guard down and trusted she’ll be safe with.
Tumblr media
I remember I received a message a few months ago that touched on if I'd explore when Michonne seemed to realize that she only felt safe with Rick in TWD, how it impacted her actions, and what that evolving journey of safety with him looked like. It took me a minute to get to, but I said I would definitely talk about it, and so I want to break that all down now, right here. ⬇😊
When it comes to Michonne and her safety becoming tied to Rick. I think it happened before she knew it happened. 👌🏽
Now of course in season 3, Rick and Michonne are strangers so it doesn't happen this season. But it does seem like Michonne's inherent safety with Rick started at least budding even this early.
I especially think this because of that beloved scene in Clear where she tells Rick about talking to her dead boyfriend. That’s a very personal and vulnerable thing to share, especially from someone who didn’t even tell Andrea much about herself when traveling with her for months. (Which was a smart move considering the way Andrea stayed gossiping 🙂)
To me, it shows that somehow Michonne felt safe enough with Rick to open up about herself - I think because she recognized that she and him have qualities inside of them that are uniquely similar.
Tumblr media
And then at the end of season 3 when Rick comes real close to delivering her to the Governor she still comes back and shows grace, trusting that she could return and be safe with them. But again I don’t think it’s season 3 where her safety is tied to Rick yet.
Tumblr media
I think that comes in season 4.
However, not 4A just yet because I think in the first half of season 4 Michonne is absolutely starting to feel more safe and comfortable with Rick but that in itself feels unsafe to her at the time. Which is why she keeps herself at a warm distance from him.
I never lose sight of Michonne’s backstory when thinking about what’s made the character who she is because it’s so important. I know the show sorta put her losing a son and boyfriend in the background but for me it always informs so much about her, in the early seasons especially. And that’s such a traumatizing thing she had to go through and so you just know that it’s probably a lot to now be growing closer and closer to this man and his son at the prison knowing how things turned out for the man and child she lost at that refugee camp.
Tumblr media
Michonne clearly really likes Rick and Carl in 4A but letting them in close after knowing profound loss is a bit of a fear for her so instead she’d always find ways to keep Rick at a friendly distance and stay out and about, of course for other motives like tracking down the Governor but also to run from the potential “danger” of being hurt again if she lets Rick become a safe space for her like he’s so naturally becoming.
Tumblr media
...But then the prison falls and so too do some of the walls around Michonne’s heart.
She tries to go back to her isolated ways after the prison but she can’t. She’s found family in those Grimes boys and she knows it and so even if she doesn’t know where those footsteps lead in After she knows she has to follow the call of her heart to be apart of something again.
In a heartbreaking scene in After (4.09), Michonne talks to Mike one more time, vulnerably saying she misses him and even saying she missed him while he was still here. It made me think how Michonne had probably also been keeping her distance from Rick out of a sense of loyalty to Mike. Just like Rick wrestled with feeling like he needed to be solely grieving Lori all the while falling hard for the katana-wielding woman that’s entered his life, I think Michonne also was subconsciously wrestling with feeling this intrinsic connection to Rick so soon after losing her family.
I really feel like Rick and Michonne’s immense sense of loyalty played a part in their slow burn being slow despite catching feelings for each other so quickly. Because while both of their former partners weren’t their person, they still weren’t just going to give up on them or abandon the memory of them, it’s not who Rick and Michonne are - they’re both loyal to the core, even to partners who weren’t loyal to them.
In some ways it seems like Mike might have stopped being able to understand Michonne, figuratively disappearing on her and giving up while she kept fighting, similar to how Lori just couldn’t understand Rick. But then Michonne and Rick met each other and felt exceptionally seen, known, heard, loved, and safe in ways that probably even surprised them towards the beginning of their bond. They finally found someone who could love them as loyally as they love, which is part of why of course their love can never be stopped or denied, not even by each other.
I think about how in season 3 Lori tells Rick he’s not a killer. But the thing is that killer is a part of him. It's not all of him but it is in him as we saw him really confronted with that side of himself at the end of season 4.
What’s beautiful about Rick's relationship with Michonne is she knows he’s a killer, even verbalizing that outright to Merle early in season 3, and she doesn’t have to deny it or change it to love him. Michonne gets that it’s in Rick and respects that as one of the many parts of him she respects and understands, not just from the outside looking in but personally. Basically, Rick and Michonne are each other's match in all the ways.
So in a beautiful act of resilience, Michonne fights the fear of being close to people again when she finds Rick and Carl in that house. And she truly embraces them as hers from here on out.
And I think here in this wonderful 4.09 moment when she finds Rick and Carl in that house is when Michonne more readily embraces that she feels most safe with Rick.
Tumblr media
In Claimed (4.11), I think we start seeing more visibly how Michonne's safety is tied to Rick and how she subconsciously senses it. In that home, both Rick and Michonne express that they need each other and are willing to possibly make a home with the two of them and Carl. An unspoken agreement that they're forever family now.
One of the many interesting things about that scene between Rick and Michonne in Claimed is that Michonne says she’s done taking breaks. But she wasn’t necessarily leaving the prison to take breaks, she was going on runs and hunting down the Governor. However, phrasing it as 'breaks' could imply that part of her constant trips away from the prison was her leaving to run from how close she was becoming to Rick and Carl - to “take a break” from becoming reintegrated into a family after the tragic aftermath of her last family turned her into a lone wolf.
But I love that when she said she’s done taking breaks she meant that and lived up to it. And then in each 4B scene, we see more and more how Michonne starts to draw closer to the Grimes boys and feel safe enough to be herself with Rick.
Tumblr media
Rick gets to see Michonne's playful side with Carl, he wants to include her in family hunting excursions, they like talking to each other and smiling over dinner, and they both often check in on each other to make sure they’re taken care of.
Tumblr media
By the end of season 4 when Michonne knows she’s okay because Rick's okay, I think she's now cognizant that she feels safe with Rick in a way that’s different than anything & anyone else. And truly how beautiful is it that in a world where safety is a true rarity, Michonne found that so fully in Rick. 🥹
Also, as I've detailed in many a post, this is also the point where I believe she's subconsciously fallen in love with him. 🥰
And where Rick’s previous wife and his former best friend/sheriff's deputy doubted his ability to keep people safe, Michonne trusts Rick wholeheartedly as a good man capable of protecting his family against anything.
That's one of the great things about rewatching TWD Seasons 1 & 2. Those early seasons make it so clear that Michonne is a love Rick has never experienced before. We don’t just feel like their love is different we get to see it in how much more Michonne loves, respects, understands, believes in, and just all and all likes Rick as opposed to his former wife and best friend.
Tumblr media
Last year I wrote a whole reflecting on richonne post about how Michonne and Rick rarely ever split up in TWD and were always paired up for most things. It was proof of their magnetism, trust, fondness for one another, and love.
But I like how now Rick and Michonne never splitting up in TWD is also such a clear sign of the safety they brought each other. And in season 5, that’s especially clear because they really are side by side through so much that season.
I think about when Michonne put her hand on Ricks before they entered Alexandria and how that was her way of offering comfort to him while also being comforted by his presence too. Just like Rick, a large reason she felt safe enough to walk out of that car and approach those ASZ gates after everything they’d been through is because she had Rick by her side.🥲
Tumblr media
The one time they’re not operating side by side with Rick hiding the gun plot from her, they both feel so weighed down by having anything come between them, and they're eager to repair the distance by the end of the season.
Michonne had felt both asleep and restless when they arrived at ASZ and part of it is because her source of safety was sorta losing his mind. When Rick begins his return to sanity - and Michonne really is a core source of sanity for him - we see a sense of safety return to Michonne as well as she declares she’ll always be with him.
I always adored that s5 'I’m still with you moment' and I love it even more now knowing that part of why she so confidently knows she’ll be with him no matter what is because Rick is who she feels safest with. 😭
Tumblr media
In 6A all of Richonne's scenes continue to solidify that Michonne feels most safe with Rick. And when Rick goes out into the horde in NWO Michonne full-on panics because he’s doing something unsafe and her own safety just evaporates as she expresses a rare moment of disarray.
And then in 6B we get to see a more personal and intimate way that Michonne feels safe with Rick. Even just walking around more stripped down in a robe and towel shows he’s made her feel super comfortable.
Tumblr media
The heightened safety she feels with Rick is especially evident in their canon era - from the way they decompress on that couch before their first kiss, the way he calmingly reaches for her in the RV and it seems to immediately bring her peace, to just the safety to let herself be adored and loved on so fully by Rick’s good kind heart in all their comfy and sensual moments at home. 🥰
Tumblr media
When she confides in Rick and tells him at the end of 7A that she only wants to go forward if it's with him - "you and me" - she means it.
And all through season 7 it’s clear she knows full well that the only time she truly feels safe is with him. It’s why she nearly throws in the towel - or throws in the sword - when she thinks walkers got to Rick in Say Yes and so vulnerably runs into his arms when seeing he is alive.
Michonne knew she couldn’t lose him on that honeymoon run. Not just 'I don't want to lose you,' she knew 'I can't lose you,' - something Rick too would grasp fully once taken from her for years. With soulmates like this, they lose each other, then in many ways they lose themselves.
When Michonne told Rick she couldn't lose him in Say Yes, I knew she felt it was because she loves him deeply but after TOWL it’s clear how she also knew she’d never truly feel safe again if she were to lose him. 😭 They are each other's security in this crazy world.
Tumblr media
Then, after getting in that brutal brawl in the s7 finale, Rick makes getting to Michonne a priority and when he finds her against that wall, she just hears his voice and feels his touch and it looks like a sense of safety has been restored to her. And to Rick too.
Tumblr media
In season 8, sirens go off in Michonne's head being away from Rick during the war and it’s clear she won’t be able to rest truly until he’s back.
And in that season's msf I’ve always felt it’s so clear that when she tells Judith she’ll bring her daddy back, Michonne is excited for both her baby girl and herself that they’ll have Rick back finally - the man who makes their family feel complete and safe. 👌🏽
Tumblr media
After tragically losing Carl (which is forever heartbreaking 💔💔💔), both Michonne and Rick try to be a safe space for each other even despite their own immense individual pain.
And they do find their way back to each other, saying i love you and holding hands off to war because no matter the circumstances if they can hold each other they can feel a sense of safety.
Tumblr media
And in s9, before Rick leaves, Richonne really feel so at home and safer than ever with each other. It’s a beautiful time for them and all their nice season 9 scenes show how Michonne is wrapped in the love and safety of her husband. Even literally just waking up with his arm wrapped around her.
When Michonne had some real apprehension regarding if the people could really band together after Negan, she always knew she could voice those concerns with Rick and he’d reassure her so encouragingly. Also for a woman to agree to get pregnant in an apocalypse - that requires feeling a lot of safety and Rick made Michonne feel safe enough to do that. 🥲
Tumblr media
But then Rick is taken and it’s devastating. 💔 And with his absence, Michonne’s safety also goes away.
She had to bring the beautiful life they created into the world without him. And you can just imagine there were so many nights alone in bed during her pregnancy when she’d longed for him to be there. And so when she looks at Rick with the CRM in ep 3 and yells you were alive ‘with them’ in this episode, I always sense this added hurt because those CRM people, who don’t even appreciate Rick, got to be around him all the time while she was miles away longing for him to be with her and feeling unsafe without him.
And this profession that she only feels safe with him makes all those moments post-Rick where she’d still find ways to connect with him all the more meaningful because even after he’s gone, she still only feels at least a semblance of safety with him.
Be it through the ring she wears and even fiddles with on her finger when needing to think, a Sherriff action figure, the bullet shell from his gun that she always wears in her hair to keep him close, talking to him in their bedroom, and most notably wrapping herself in his clothes just to try to remember how safe she once felt in his arms.
Tumblr media
It moves me so much how she still only felt safe with Rick even after he was taken from her. She tells Judith how she felt so lost after Rick was gone. And because she’s strong she figured out how to keep going of course, but the world became an ultra-dangerous place again so it makes sense why she’d become as cautious as she became. Nothing could make her truly feel safe until she was back with her true love.
Tumblr media
And when Michonne is back with Rick in TOWL, you see that sense of safety start to come back. She has no clue where he’s taking her or how they’ll get out of this CRM place but she trusts him. She knows he’ll do anything to keep her safe.
Tumblr media
But the surprising aspect is Rick will do anything to keep her safe…including trying to destroy being her safe space so that she’ll be willing to leave him and make it home. 🥀☹️
And that is exactly what we see happen as this heart-gripping gym scene continues. So my extra self has to do a part two to talk about the latter half of this gym scene.
I'll conclude this post by saying, “The only time I feel safe if when I’m with you” is such a deeply beautiful, meaningful, and memorable line. 😭 Black women, both in fiction and in reality, don't always get to express that innate want to feel safe with someone/something outside of ourselves and so seeing Michonne get to say that her safety doesn't just come from her but from her husband was powerful and lovely. 👏🏽
I forever love Danai for knowing Michonne would feel this way in her relationship with Rick and allowing her to voice it so perfectly and authentically here. This episode really was written by someone who knows Rick and Michonne inside and out and I adore the way Richonne is each other's truest safe space. 🥹👌🏽

Enhypen x female member reader
Summary: en o'clock ep 32 except you are the 8th member.
Tumblr media
Note: the reader is older than Ni-ki but younger than Jungwon, and of course the episode had to be changed a bit. Kinda long for no reason tbh.
_______________
Face down on the floor, arms and legs positioned to give the illusion you’re knocked unconscious. As some of the members pretend to wake up, you stay down and let Jungwon and Sunoo handle the intro.
Waiting for your turn to leave the waiting room you eye Jay's sleeping bag, not noticing he saw your stare. “Yah, don’t even think about it” he claims protectively as he tosses it over his shoulder. Looking into the camera you pout and mouth “so rude”. Hearing your name be called, you quickly run out of the room, hoping to try and outrun the cameraman while also trying to get to an area none of your members were in.
Tired, you turn a corner and make eye contact with Niki. Pausing for a second both of you look at each other, standing still before you turn back and run quickly “don’t come close!” He claps his hands and laughs as he chases you as a joke. Running into a room, you spot Sunoo in his orange set finding a mission.
“You found one already?” you ask as you look at the sheet of paper. “Yeah, it was just under the block.” Sunoo responds as he draws for his mission. Walking and checking out the room Niki walks in. Staying still and crouched near the front of the door, you stayed and watched over Sunoo. Niki is always playing pranks on the members so it makes sense that they would make him one of the imposters. Remembering the imposters aren’t announced yet, you slowly approach them as they’re immersed in Sunoo’s drawing. “Boo!” you shout as you grab onto Niki’s shoulders and lightly shake him. “Yah!” he shouts, turning to you, seeing you book it out of the room before he starts chasing you.
Losing Niki you turn into an area and find Jay searching on the floor. Quietly making your way behind him you see him grabbing an ice cream from the fridge. “Can I have one too?” you ask, now craving an ice cream. “Yo what the f-” Jay catches himself, startled as he turns to face you. Putting a hand on his hip he points at you, “What have I told you about sneaking up on people Y/n” he scolds. Playfully pouting, you apologize as he hands you an ice cream. “You found any missions yet?” you ask, as you begin to eat the ice cream. “No, try checking on the counter over there” he guides you before the staff tells you time has passed and you will learn your roles.
Standing with your camera man rubbing your hands together in excitement to find out your role. “I'm a citizen right? I’ll totally be able to tell who’s the imposter.” you claim with pride as you clap your hands together.
“No”
“No?..... I’m…. imposter?” you ask, eyebrows raised, mouth opened in disappointment. Seeing the staff nod you turn towards the wall and dramatically hunch over and pretend to punch the wall. The camera then cuts to you as you walk down a hallway, “It’s okay, sometimes in life we don’t get what we want. But this just means I was always meant for this role…. And I will win.” you say as you point to the camera and pat your chest, “Just watch and see”
On a mission to find Jake and eliminate him, you walk peacefully around the halls, but still stay weary of who may be nearby. Passing through a hall you hear Sunoo talking about coffee and continue my way with a smile. Running into Niki you see him moving a couch. “You found a mission?” Seeing him jump a bit you laugh as he smiles while clutching onto the piece of paper. “You’re the mafia?” he asks weary while keeping his distance from you. “No, I'm a citizen. I just haven’t found any missions, I saw Sunoo doing his” I explain giving him some info to begin framing a picture of me being innocent. “Hmmm” he hums still wary of your presence, “I don’t trust you” he says with a smile as he keeps the distance between the two of you. Smirking, you jokingly jump towards him and laugh loudly as he jumps back. “You go away! I have to do my mission.” he says waving you off. You smile and head towards another hallway, “Ok, but you’re gonna regret me leaving, you’ll probably need my help” you say as you stick your tongue out at him before jogging down the hallway to try and find Jake.
Roaming endlessly you begin to sulk to the camera. “I haven’t seen him since we started, I swear he just vanished.” Continuing down the hall you begin to drag your feet before turning to the cameraman and whispering “Do you know where he is?.... I promise I won’t tell” you beg with your hands together in desperation. The camera shakes showing that the cameraman was telling you know and you let out a disappointed sigh before the camera cuts to you talking to the camera again. “You know…. Life throws unexpected obstacles at you, but you must persevere…. This is only a sign that my efforts will lead to my success. I will find you Jake.” you say confidently as you bring your fist to your palm.
Hearing commotion near the room you saw Sunoo in earlier you begin to approach carefully and peak the corner. Seeing Heeseung, Jake, and Niki entering the room you get a hop in your step as you finally see Jake. Staying at the corner of the hall you see Heeseung and Niki run from the room while Jake stays near the door, peeking into the room. Approaching quietly as Jake is by the door you grab his arm to pull him away from the view of the door quickly and press the stamp given to you onto his back before running away quickly with a bounce to your run. “Naur!” you hear Jake yell in the distance, probably finding out that he was eliminated. Standing on the escalators as you’re nearly to the second floor you celebrate by dancing in front of the camera. “Mission success” you say as you give a thumbs up to the camera.
Reaching the second floor you decide to look around to see if there are any other members around to begin building your alibi. As you reached the top you ran into Jungwon, but was startled as you weren't expecting him. As you gasped you clutched your sweatshirt, “Jungwon you scared me.” you breathed out, eyes wide. He laughed as you both kept a distance from each other. Looking at his hands you notice he doesn’t have anything. “You haven’t found any missions down here?” you ask, trying to look wary of him so he can think you’re innocent. “Are you the mafia?” he asks, stepping back slightly. “No?” you say as you furrow your brows and point downstairs, “I just finished a mission and came to look for some up here.” Standing in silence you squint your eyes before holding out your hand, showing your pinky finger. You haven’t gotten a name for your next victim so you might as well get someone to back up your alibi. “Let’s promise to watch each other and do a mission?” you ask. “Ok.” Jungwon says excitedly, trusting you and locking fingers before you both go down the hall and go into the room you recognized earlier.
“I can’t tell whose mafia yet. I’ve seen the other downstairs but I’ve never seen Jake or Sunghoon. Do you think they might be mafia?” I ask in hopes of him starting to pin the blame on the other members. “It can’t be heeseung because we did a mission together earlier.” nodding my head we enter a lounge area and Jungwon bursts out laughing “Jay hyung?” he questions as he approaches a sleeping Jay. You hunch over and laugh as you see Jay laying on a couch in his sleeping bag dead asleep. He really did end up putting that sleeping bag to use. As you both approach him Jungwon begins to shake him and ask whether he is dead or not. Beginning to shake Jay too, Jungwon finally reports his death as you begin to mess with Jay. Sticking the ends of your hair into his ear as he swats you away and you laugh as you try to avoid his swatting hand.
As you and Jungwon reach the discussion room you sip on your drink as you lean your head against the wall and wait for the other members to arrive. Seeing Jake enter the room and be given angel wings you lightly push Jungwon’s leg with yours to get his attention as you let out a gasp. “You died too?” you ask with a stunned tone as Jake smiles and shakes his head as he knows what game you’re trying to play. Heeseung begins to wonder just who might’ve killed Jake since he only got Jay during this round, meaning there was another imposter in the group. Since you were with Jungwon when Jay was found, you knew exactly what to do.
Facing your members you begin to explain, “I think Sunghoon is one of the imposters. When we found Jay, Sunghoon approached us out of nowhere and was suspicious.” you explain as you point to both yourself and Jungwon. He immediately begins to nod his head, “Yeah, it couldn’t have been us because we were trying to complete missions earlier.” he says as he begins to look at the members and see what anyone else had to say. “Heeseung is the imposter! Earlier he had something in his pocket.” Niki points at Heeseung as he explains earlier events that happened between them. “It was in his pocket and he kept acting suspicious.” he emphasizes, hoping to finally take down Heeseung as he tried his best to avoid him earlier. Contemplating what to do, deciding to back Niki up, you think it may benefit you later. “Niki can’t be one of the imposters because I was alone with him earlier and saw him trying to do a mission. I trust Niki” you say looking at Heeseung, showing the others I also think he’s an imposter. If Heeseung is your partner, then this was just a sacrifice that needed to be made to ensure your success. The seeds are already planted.
Heeseung was voted out, and because of Niki’s explanation of Heeseung having something in his pocket, you figured he was the other imposter. Using a hair tie on your wrist you showed the camera that instead of keeping the stamp in your pocket, you would keep it on your arm near your wrist under your sweater while the hair tie keeps it in place. You wouldn't make the same mistakes Heesung did, “Thank you Heeseung” you wink at the camera, showing how well you hid the stamp. Walking around the staff gives you your next target, this time you get to eliminate two members since you’re one against four. Getting your targets you let out a light gasp. Showing the paper to the camera you show that your next victims are Sunoo and Niki, “Sorry boys but you’re going down”. Stopping in the hallway you bring your hand to your chin as you think, and slowly start to cook up a plan. Finally deciding what to do, you nod before walking around trying to find your next victims.
Turning into a hallway you stop and gasp being startled by Sunghoon as you weren’t expecting him to be there. He is always so quiet. Bringing a hand to clutch your sweater on your chest you show that you were wary of him. “You scared me…” you explain trying to see if he had anything in his hands like a mission. He wasn’t your target but you did try to blame him earlier, if all works well with teaming up with Jungwon earlier, then you can get him voted out. “How come you were nowhere to be seen last round until Jay was found?” you ask with a raised brow, hoping that after this conversation he wouldn’t think you were the imposter. “I didn’t see you anywhere either, how do I know you’re not the imposter?” he asks back, not wanting to be pinned as one of the imposters. “I was completing missions but no one has seen you do one…” you explain, not exactly where you wanted to be in this conversation. As you both stand there in a standoff with words, “If someone sees you do a mission then I’ll believe you, but until then stay back.” you say slowly stepping away from him, not taking your eyes off him. He laughed lightly while turning away.
Wandering the floor warily you look for any signs of Sunoo, he would be the best target for now since he would probably make less noise than Niki would. Niki would probably be too shocked and loud that he might give away your identity. Glancing through the rooms searching for Sunooo you decide to head onto a different floor. While on the escalator you pout at the camera. “It's going to be extra hard because there's too many people against me…. It's okay, everything works out in the end.” you speak, mainly to yourself but also to the camera. Walking around you hear a familiar voice talking about a mission. Smiling you immediately knew it was Sunoo and head over, making sure that no one was around you realized no one else was on this floor. Seeing him walk down the hallway making conversation with the camera you quickly and quietly approach him from behind without making any noise and press your stamp to his back before running into the hallway right next to you so he wouldn’t be able to see you.
Successfully getting away you celebrated with your camera man, “I knew Sunoo would be best to go after, now we just have to get Niki.” As you approached a different floor from being on the elevator, seeing nothing but a bunch of chairs and windows you didn’t notice anyone on the floor with you. Turning to you cameraman you put a thumbs up for your second successful kill before you see a paper on a table. “Oh a mission?” you point out as you grab it and read it. This mission didn’t matter because they weren’t for me but you were curious as to what they were. Reading it outloud to my cameraman you look up to show it to him just because it was a look into what my victims had to do, turning around and you jump and scream. “JUNGWON!” you screech as you almost fall to the floor as you take a couple steps back. He flinches at how loud you screamed but bursts out laughing, clenching his stomach as he leans onto the table to support him. “Are you scared? Did I scare you?” he teases as you grab his arm and shake him lightly, “I almost had a heart attack right now Yang Jungwon'' you whine “I found a mission, let's do it?” you say as you wave the paper in front of his face, reminding him of the pinky promise you made earlier. Completing the mission you both face your cameras and pose, you giving a thumbs up and giving a mission complete to both cameras.
Heading down in the elevator you both travel together for now since you both feel safe around each other. If only he knew… thinking about doing the mission, technically it was working against me but I doubt that they were even close to finishing. Building an alibi right now is what matters and Jungwon would be able to provide it. As you both wait for the elevator to go down, you both are just goofing around in the elevator, since you both were close in age you were very comfortable with each other. Being back to back you both are balancing yourselves by pressing your backs together and squatting as if you were sitting in a chair while your arms were interlocked. “I can't, I'm gonna fall!” you yelled out with a strained voice as you both were trying to keep yourselves up. Laughing just caused your stomach to hurt even more. Finally the elevator doors opened and he peeked his head out, “Wait” he held out an arm to keep you in the elevator as he scooped out the surrounding area before motioning for you to come out. Exiting the elevator you both were walking down a hall, looking for another mission to do together.
Honestly, you weren’t exactly sure what to do next. If you left Jungwon’s side and he ran into Sunghoon and teamed up, they could find Sunoo. Also, how were you even supposed to eliminate Niki right now when you’re attached to Jungwon. As if the gods answered your prayers Jungwon turned to you and put a hand on your shoulder. “I have to use the restroom” he stated while pointing to the restroom right next to you, hoping that they would cut this out when it aired. Nodding I let him go, “I’ll wait for you down the hall, in case I have to run,” you explained as he nodded, entering the restroom. When the coast was clear I quickly headed out and ran silently in search of Niki, if this was quick then I can make it back to Jungwon, but it's not certain that Niki will be on this floor. A higher power must’ve loved you because to your luck, there he was. Presented right to you as he was peering into a room, approaching from behind silently you pressed the stamp against him and was going to make a run for it, but right then and there your heart dropped.
Standing right there, a witness to your murder. Sunghoon stood mouth agape, as he witnessed first hand that you were the imposter. Not knowing what to do, you did the only thing that you could think of to save yourself. Sunghoon would have to go down, and this would have to be where Jungwons trust in you mattered. Screaming extra loud purposely you ran back to where jungwon was. Seeing him coming out of the restroom you grabbed his hand pulling him while telling him breathlessly as you continued to run. “It’s Sunghoon, I saw him eliminate Niki” I breathe out as we run. He looks back, unsure of what to do “Why did you report it?” he questioned, pulling his arm away. “He was right there, I ran to get you because if you’re safe then we can vote him out.” You explain, letting him keep his distance if he felt more comfortable that way. He nodded, accepting your answer. Afterall it couldn't have been you since you’ve been with him practically this whole time right? Reporting it everyone met back in the discussion room
Sitting nervously next to Jungwon you tried to not let it show how you were feeling. He chewed on his ice cutely and you glanced over to everyone who went to sit down by the rest of the eliminated members. You pouted slightly as you felt bad, but to the staff they found it quite funny how you were pouting at the members you eliminated. “There’s four survivors left right?” Jungwon asked, however the staff denied it. “What, who died?” you asked, turning over to your eliminated members. You knew but you still had to seem innocent to Jungwon. Letting out a small you gasp, while clutching your sweater over your heart. “Sunoo, I’m sorry we didn't find you” you say, sending him a hand heart. He was honestly like your bestie so having to kill him felt wrong, but it had to be done to secure your win. All that needed to be done now was to vote out Sunghoon and the imposters would win. “Look, he’s sad that he’s dead” Hesseing laughs as he points out Niki pouting as he looks down, playing with something in his lap. All the members laugh (excluding Jay since he was knocked tf out), and finally set back to try and uncover who the imposter is.
Sitting between Sunghoon and Jungwon you scoot towards Jungwon, still trying to play your role to a t to win. Looking at Jungwon he nods at you, trusting you because of how much time you guys had spent together, he figured that if you were the imposter you would’ve killed him already. “We vote out Sunghoon as the imposter” Jungwon states confidently as he places another ice cube in his mouth. As he crunches on his ice cube you nod your head as Sunghoon sighs in defeat. However the staff shakes their head before explaining, “The game is over, the imposter’s won”. Your head shoots up in confusion as your brows furrow, “The imposters won? How?” you ask as you look at the rest of your members with confusion written on both yours and their faces. “The imposter’s goal was to kill 3 members, four were eliminated.” the staff explains. “Does everyone know who the imposters are?” they ask as they know a couple of the members don’t know who the imposters were. Sunoo, Heeseung, and Jay raise their hands as they don’t know who the other imposter is. Heeseung didn’t know who his partner was, Jay was killed by Hesseung and missed the whole game, Sunoo was practically snipped, and Sunghoon knows, along with Jungwon, even though Jungwon doesn’t know entirely.
First the staff reveals Heeseung as one of the imposters and he smiles while Niki yells that everyone should’ve trusted him. Members laugh until Heeseung disrupts, “I don’t know who the other imposter is though, and I was only able to kill Jay” he admits as he scratches his head. Jake and Niki laugh pettily since they knew you were the imposter, but decided to not spoil it. “I didn’t even see who killed me, they ran before I knew what happened” Sunoo explained with a pout. The other members laughed and Jay spoke up, awake from his nap. “Sunoo got snipped,” he laughed, causing the other members to laugh too, especially since they thought he was sleeping. Jungwon turns towards the staff as he asks while raising his brows, “Who is it?” he questions, suspense building in the room. The staff points to you and you smile as you have a clear taste of victory. Jumping up from where you were sitting you jump, hitting both of your feet together as you threw a fist in the air in victory. Turning to face your members you point to yourself as you do a little victory dance, “I win!!!” you explain, doing some random footwork. Sunoo was absolutely appalled, getting killed and not knowing the killer was enough to gag him, but you, his bestie, had him absolutely gagged. Raising a hand to his mouth he gasps, “REALLY?” he questions as Niki stomped his feet lightly, “I should’ve known” he sighed out with a small smile. Jake speaks up, “She killed me and no one even found me!” he stated while pouting. Members were laughing and Jungwon had his arms by his side in defeat as he rested his head against the wall, “She had me fooled, totally wrapped around her finger. She even helped me on missions, I thought she was clear!” he explains to the camera. You and Heeseung are fistbumping at your sweet victory as the other members piece everything together. Sunghoon and Jay speak at the same time, “Is no one else concerned that she's too good at this?” they say to the camera as the members were conversing about the game.
Settling back down you lean your head against the wall as you face the cameras with a big smile. Clearing your throat you look into the camera, “I’ve never had to deceive so many people before, it was so stressful but I’m glad that I was able to win with my partner. And I’m sorry to my members who I’ve killed along the way.” you apologize with a giggle in your tone and the other members laugh. “You were too good of an imposter, we can’t trust you in any other games we do now ever.” Jay states which sends the other members into a laughing spiral. “I’ve never had to lie so much in my life,” Heeseung laughs as he sits down. As the members calm down Sunghoon goes to end the shoot before the staff interrupts. “It’s not over yet..”
“What?” everyone asks as an imaginary sweat drop falls down your face, one round was enough for you.

I’ve never written anything like this before and I’m not sure if many will like it but here this is. I tried, maybe if people like it then I’ll do another. I also didn’t double check or proof read this so sorry if there are any mistakes.

Twig's GL Recs for March-July 2024
[Here’s my rec list for GLs through to Feb 2024 ]
Fake Buddies Korean, YouTube, 7 episodes (one ep BL, one ep GL, one ep crossover, and then 2 more BL prequel eps and two more GL prequel episodes), approx 45 minutes when compiled, Apr 27-Jun 28 2024
At first this was a little three-part series in which it turns out both members of the couple are secretly in a homosexual relationship with their best friends and using the other as a beard. Lots of comedy of errors and puns (“I like lilies better than roses”) as the characters try to make each other understand the situation they’re in. The backstory prequels were really cute friends to lovers, and it was really nice to see these couples land in solidarity! This series is short and cute and pure fluff.
To the X Who Hated Me: YunO x Jane Korean, YouTube, 3 episodes ~6 mins each, aired May 22-29 [microseries complete, X who hated me series may be ongoing]
When the previous 2-ep miniseries under this umbrella landed (which I wrote about here: ), I had no idea it was going to be a series of microseries! These are all short but good second chance romances. This one has a “reality”-show-within-a-show format, with a frustrating misunderstanding, and a good kiss. Be sure to always watch past the credits for this series!
You Are My Star, Thai, YouTube, 1ep 37 mins (aired as 3 12-min eps and then they compiled into this one short film), May 18 [complete]
youtube
This was a cute Thai GL that I enjoyed mostly because of the very clear cribbing of specific scenes from recent BLs. It was mostly trope-y (both cuteness and drama), with good kissing. See if you can spot the BL references.
Xiao Xiang Yi Jiu, Chinese, YouTube, 7 episodes 2 mins each, May 20-June 3 [complete]
youtube
This little microseries is about a girl becoming an intern for her crush/idol. Happy ending, and they do become explicitly girlfriends! No kiss because censorship.
Lonely Girls Korean, YouTube, 4 episodes 8 minutes each (32 mins compiled) May 14 [complete]
youtube
This is about a couple that struggles with the closet, lack of communication, and how to make their relationship last in the face of uncertainty. Also there’s good kisses. SukFilm have done other series before and since, but this is my fave GL of theirs so far.
The Two of Us Deep Night spinoff, Thai, YouTube, 6 episodes, 15 mins each, airing May 30-July 4 [complete]
I was so confused at first, because I didn’t realize this was supposed to be their story during the events of Deep Night that we didn’t get to see. I was excited about this one but bummed that we started the miniseries with a health scare and then a threat by Meiji to marry some guy just to make Freya jealous? I found it a little frustrating that two women in their 40s could not be honest with each other. The couple is so cute, but the storytelling is not, so take this rec with a grain of salt. Still, it’s so nice to see women in their 40s being super cute and in love in between the drama so I’m keeping it on this list! I am very glad to have gotten the dance sequence and the bath sequence.
******
And of course currently airing right now so take with a grain of salt because i don’t yet know how they end, but
Ayaka is in Love with Hiroko Japanese, 8 episodes, 25 mins, airing July 4- August 22 [ongoing]
This is a laugh-out-loud funny office comedy in which Akaya flirts desperately with her senior colleague at work, Hiorko, who then spends her evenings complaining to her friends at the lesbian bar about oblivious straights who don’t understand the meaning of what they say. I've written a little more about this show here. It is my favourite GL of the year so far and if it stays this good is on its way to being one of my favourites of all time!
The Secret of Us Thai, 8 episodes, 50 mins each, airing June 24-August 15 [ongoing]
This series starts with the cutest episode of all time and then devolves quickly into serious drama lol but it did a good job avoiding pure “noble idiocy” so I’m hopeful it will continue to hold up. As of ep3 things are happening that I did not expect, so I’m really curious how this one will go. In the meantime, it is also worth noting that these actresses are excellent kissers.
[UPDATE: I already have to retract this, they left it at a weird place last week but I was giving it the benefit of the doubt; but alas it is not holding up friends]

The Double (Ep. 32): You reap what you sow
Tumblr media
I'm always riveted when I watch a Shen Yurong scene because not only does Liang Yongqi have electrifying chemistry with the actresses around him but my goodness do I LOVE how the show's visual storytelling reinforces what a pitiful man he is.
Framing, Blocking, Lighting
For example, this episode makes fantastic use of doors and other forms of architectural framing to show Yurong's fundamental flaw: his cowardice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the beginning of the episode, we see Fangfei gaze at two doorways, one that could lead to her future (Duke Su) and the other a painful reminder of the trauma Yurong has caused her. It's only when she recalls Duke Su's reassurance ("A'Li, from today onwards, there's no need to be afraid of anyone") that she's able to step forward and face her memories.
But when Yurong enters the hall and offers to open the door for her, suggesting he knows her true identity, Fangfei side-steps him and their blocking slowly changes. Fangfei now faces the light, her back to the door of their past.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They've never been quite aligned as husband and wife, and in this moment the gulf between them is even clearer.
Unlike Fangfei, who fights for survival and will no longer compromise what she believes in, Yurong refuses to see that he has always had a choice to fight for his conscience, regardless of how difficult it might be. His constant need to pass blame instead of choosing the path he knows is right has left him a pitiful shell of the vibrant scholar he once was and so he remains shrouded in the darkness of the hall.
SIDE NOTE #1: I love the parallels between Fangfei's argument with Yurong ("So, in your opinion, the crimes of your mother and sister don't need to be atoned for, while my innocence and grievances don't need to be compensated") and Grandmother Jiang's admonishment of Minister Jiang ("Can you really let this go?...You haven't fulfilled your responsibilities as a father for all these years"). Both are men who have failed their families--my heart broke when Yurong distinguished between Fangfei and his "family"--by choosing who they decide to protect.
Camera Angles
Tumblr media
Ok, this scene has GOT to be one of my favorites from the whole show and so much of that is due to the way it plays with camera angles and the visual language of power.
In cinematography, low-angle and high-angle shots are often paired to visually enhance the power imbalance between characters. Low-angle shots make the subject look more powerful and threatening while high-angle shots make the subject look weaker and more vulnerable.
But in this particular scene, that visual relationship is subverted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The scene starts with Yurong taunting Princess Wanning.
He is at such a low point after being accused of assaulting Fangfei that he embraces the idea of banishment or death. He is shot at a high angle with the Princess looming over him as usual but it's clear that at this moment he has reclaimed some power now that his all-consuming despair has liberated him from his fear.
When she tries to attack him, he pushes her back and then gets up to bow mockingly. It is he who is now shot from a low angle, signifying his dominance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But then Princess Wanning seductively leans back in the straw. As they trade barbs, she is shot from a high angle but it's clear there has been another shift in power:
Yurong: Your highness, you don't have to save me. You've fooled me for so long, I'm sure you're bored of it. Princess Wanning: I'm not bored. Shen Yurong, in this world, I'm the only one who can decide how you die. Your life is in my hands.
As noted by @dangermousie, Yurong's lack of self-interest just "makes her more interested again, because someone broken is not her thing but someone who she can potentially break more?" And we can see the fear creep over his face again once he realizes that.
Regardless of the temporary relief he might have felt challenging her, it was all an illusion, as demonstrated by the constantly shifting meaning of the scene's camera angles to maintain her power within the scene. He is completely trapped now.
Tumblr media
SIDE NOTE #2: The fact that Princess Wanning always finds a way to make a crop out of anything even a piece of straw and bring a man to his knees (literally or metaphorically) cracks me up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SIDE NOTE #3: This moment? Hot. Am eagerly waiting for the fanfic.
