thinking about murayama & chiharu tonight. murayama loses to cobra, and thus essentially loses chiharu to him. i don't think murayama cared about that aspect all too much. he didn't know the kid, and he lost in a fair fight.

but watching the scene where chiharu returns the badge or w/e to murayama? with sannoh - with cobra - watching on the other side, i wonder if murayama felt upset about how readily sannoh accepted and cared for chiharu. they could provide something he couldn't. chiharu received the love and acceptance of cobra, which murayama couldn't achieve either.

chiharu leaves murayama and crosses the fence, returning to sannoh; murayama remains on the other side, staring at cobra, who looks back. murayama wants to cross too.

then, at the end of the first movie, murayama asks in front of all sword if he can join sannoh after he graduates. he wants to be on the other side, with cobra - but cobra defers to chiharu, who rejects him. murayama is clearly hurt. not only has chiharu succeeded where murayama could not, but chiharu is now directly blocking murayama from his goal. embarrassed and dejected, he goes home.

at the end of the third movie, however, cobra has come around a little - and so has chiharu. he doesn't reject murayama when he asks about wanting to buy a bike - clearly a lead-in for him joining sannoh, or at least associating with them on a more personal level. chiharu then bridges the two worlds, the two men, together by offering to ride with murayama when he gets his license.

cobra and murayama's story started with chiharu, the boy who fled from murayama to find refuge and family in sannoh. it only makes sense that their story ends with chiharu extending friendship to murayama; the roles have switched, the outcast welcomes the leader, and only now can relations flourish with cobra and sannoh.

and just in case we had any doubts about murayama's future with sannoh/cobra? when chiharu makes the offer, murayama's surrounded by orange-yellow scenery.

When Mabel comes out to Stan, she’s really scared that he’s going to reject her and have an issue with it, so she’s emotional and asks him if he still loves and supports her and he’s just like “??? Kid I’ve been telling you all summer I’m one of the LBTGs” and then it’s her turn to be like “wait what??” because she thinks he had never mentioned a sexuality before, and it turns out Stan had been constantly telling the kids that he’s “ambidextrous” because he thought it meant the same thing as bisexual.

I think so many people are so deeply alienated from themselves that they have no clue how to exercise their free will and autonomy. For some, this alienation runs so deep that they are afraid of their own autonomy and humanity. It is completely understandable why one would have those feelings, but it can be worrisome.

I want to help others who feel this way, so here are small things I have done to exercise my free will:

Add "guilty pleasure" songs to playlists and actually listen to them (I have a ton of late 1990s-early 2000s music I listen to now proudly that I never listened to in the past out of shame)

Getting the décor item, bath set, bed spread, ect. in the patterns you like, even if it's "childish" (I got a dinosaur-themed wastebasket from the kids' décor section and I adore it)

Taking a new route to get to a place you go to often

Eat dessert first

Celebrate well, and often

Collect things that are "odd" or don't seem like an "acceptable" thing to collect (somebody on my "for you" page collects dandelion crayola crayons and it was so cool!!!!!!)

Incorporate one new piece in an outfit you wear frequently (e.g., a new chain, a necklace, ribbons, bracelets, ect.). Challenge yourself to add onto the outfits if you feel up for it.

Sing along to songs without worrying that you sound "good" or your intonation is completely accurate

Read a book from a genre you weren't allowed to read as a kid (comics, thrillers, mysteries, anything!)

Walk without having a specific destination or goal

Pick up a new craft without expecting yourself to master it or to ever be "good" enough. Get your hands messy.

I don't want to shame anybody for not feeling as though they have free will or that they are exempt from exercising it. However, I wanted to give ideas so that you might read this list and find your own ways to express your intrinsic autonomy and will. You deserve to be a person, to feel alive, not just living. That is what our lives are for.

There's a lot I could say about The Subtance as an unflinching, gruesome close-up portrait of systemic misogyny, internalized sexism, self-hatred, and the brutality of fame, but more importantly, you know what I bet? I bet there is exactly one customer of The Subtance who is doing everything right. Week one, makes a living as a fitness influencer; week two, enjoys a lavish retirement funded by her other self's earnings. Week one, jogging, yoga, filming tiktoks, enjoying the vitality of youth; week two, Alaskan cruises, mahjong with the girls, enjoying unlimited free time and liberation from the crushing weight of the societal expectation to care what other people think of you. Keeps her other self on a nice air mattress with a quilt and always cooks a big recovery breakfast to be waiting for her when she switches. Walks out of that creepy alley every week whistling. Has no idea potential complications even exist. Every other user is living a psychedelic horror show of trauma, goop, and rage, and she's just at Barnes and Noble picking up the latest selection for book club. I know I'm alone in this, but I would happily watch that sequel.
