don’t mind me, just bitching about my choir teacher

#that man. that fucking man.#he’s nice but he lies to our faces all the fucking time #he always tells my choir that we’re his favorite bc we’re actually mature and we get shit done #meanwhile #we never get to fucking do anything #like for the high school choirs there’s men’s ensemble #women’s ensemble (the one i’m in)#and vocal ensemble (the top choir that you have to audition for)#and vocal and men’s both get to have field trips throughout the year to go do stuff and perform at places #and womens?#all we get is the choir picnic that every choir goes to #and competition that every choir also goes to #we also get the most boring songs #like in men’s they always get fun songs that they have choreography and shit for #and even in vocal they’ll have the occasional fun song #but womens? nope. no dancing. no fun things.#just the most boring songs ever #do they sound pretty? yeah some of them #but they’re absolutely dull otherwise #and he wonders why we have a hard time smiling at concerts #also auditioning for vocal and vocal ensemble as a whole is kinda super bullshit #bc it’s a very biased process in favor of those with higher incomes and stable families #but that’s a whole other thing #and i’m really tired lol #anyways sorry for the rant he just really pisses me off #k.txt #vent tw

Ooooohhhhhhhh you're nudging at a pandoras box asking me my opinions of Madeline Miller 🙃

To answer while holding the full ranting instinct back on a leash (partially bc I legit don't have much time for much typing rn AND I know lots of people like MM and idk I generally don't enjoy making people feel like they shouldn't like a thing, but I also love being salty and this is my constant internal struggle):

With a lot of her characterizations I feel like M.M. either goes too hard making them sympathetic (Circe and Patrocles being the top contenders who come to mind) or she swings too hard the other way. Odysseus is like....fine? He's not outright terrible? But he does fall into her "they are either sympathetic (cougboringcough) beauties with maayybe a couple Tragic Flaws (that are barely flaws, goD why couldn't she just let Circe have full agency and purposely curse Scylla why can't maybe Penelope be as much of a scheming suspicious fucker as her husband GOD these "feminist retelling" authors are too cowardly to touch Medea-nonono the rant is leashed I'm staying on target!) or they are horrible awful people." But she's made so many comments that make me baffled about her academic background in classics (why would you say all the gods are sociopaths Madeline??? that is an actual ancient cultures religion you're trashing??? do you not get how gods are used narratively in stories is not the same as they're worshipped esp in a religion without strict canon??? You know how we all understand that Paradise Lost isnt Christian canon what the F-Not ranting not ranting I'm good!!) lmao. She seems to fall into the common take I see where modern Anglo morality is projected on the characters divorced of the time/culture/narrative they are set in, and then go "omg how did people think this was a hero?"

Anyway I just don't see how people can look at Odysseus being a scheming ratfuck compulsive liar (who is also a great warrior in violent times bc it...was a warrior society who told his story) and go "um he's terrible why would anyone like him as he is originally????" while MCU Loki was so popular they kept bringing him back from the dead to continue being A Scheming Little Bastard.

(EDIT: uh tldr is I read Circe. The entire experience was me going "oooo it's about to get good" and then realizing that Circe is just boring the whole time. Came out the other end with more feelings about how M.M. writes women than Odysseus, but her Odysseus is part of a trend of doing a lot of black and white morality shenanigans)

#read circe and came away underwhelmed overall and esp bored by her circe #tried reading song of achilles when it came out and was bored and then angry at how she wrote thetis and patroclus #most of my other big MM opinions are opinions about how modern 'feminist' retellings just add more miserable women than the og story had #and its impossible to ignore her work if you talk about ancient lit #god im gonna be chewing glass when i need to see everyone talking about the Persephone book shes writing #if she ever writes about Dionysus and Ariadne i might commit a sparagmos #this answer IS my held back rant fodjdkdj #i was bored by circe and then the more i read the classics the more i got mad at it fifjdkdj #i added a read more for those who don't care to see me barely holding back from biting about mm

this is a very difficult question, edith, because i have a huge problem with this album, i also feel like i have a lot to say, but i will write the entire essay in a few days, cause there's a lot to unpack. for now i can only say that i don't love this album, i still think it's the worst taylor's album ever (for those who say this is her best album: stop lying), there's nothing poetic about it for me & really hate some of the lyrics (come on, charlie puth & tattooed golden retriever, cringe cringe cringe). as much as i love jack, i think taylor should have worked more with aaron on this one, because the 2am edition is much better & i feel like he saved it with his incredible production, it's literally everything i wanted this album to be. in conclusion: i would probably erase the entire standard edition (maybe i would leave 2-3 songs that i actually liked) & i would just make an album out of those 2am tracks. the only song i can truly say i love is "i hate it here", maybe because it's the most relatable for me. but imo the entire album was just... terrible & unnecessary. taylor, please, take a break.

#also i wanted to add that when i found out this is a double album i was so mad... because i was so bored & tired...#those songs were so disappointing #& then BOOM BITCH there's even more #i didn't ask for this #but my boy aaron saved the day #the first part of the album feels lazy & boring #& this is the first time ever when i really want to give it a chance & a few more listens but i just have to #literally force myself to listen to it during the day #& i skip most of the songs anyway #so idk #it's scandalous really #i just... feel so bored.#maybe it will grow on me tho we will see #but those are my thoughts for now #i'm sorry #ts #ttpd #i saved every letter you wrote me*

Last night before my mother went to bed we checked out the latest bp solo release, just to kind of get it out of the way. At some point I remarked about how all of the members' solo videos had constant outfit changes. We went back to the beginning of the video and counted about 12 iirc. We ended up playing a fun little game where we watched a solo MV by each member where we just counted the seperate outfits. Solo had upwards of 15, On the Ground less than 10 and Lalisa a little over 10. tbc.

Afterwards we got curious about other female soloists and watched a video each from Hwasa, Sunmi, IU, Taeyeon and Nayeon. With the exception of IU and Taeyeon all videos had a similar outfit change count as the BP videos. Yet, since they were all much more like costumes (and a considerable number were also used on music show stages afterwards), they felt much more purposeful, whereas with BP it had an effect like watching a scene that has too many cuts for no reason. Just wanted to share.

that's kind of a fun experiment! i don't know that i've ever actually bothered to count outfit changes before (except for when i get paid to), but those numbers make sense to me. yg doesn't really give a shit about making cohesive mvs that have logical follow throughs or intention, especially not with bp, so it's not really surprising that you found their solos to not make as much sense.

#sunmi iu and taeyeon all put a TON of work into their solos so of course when you watch them back to back with a bp mv #you can very clearly tell the difference #kinda funny that we had two mega famous solos this month that were dead on arrival and the most bland performances ive ever seen #the styling for flower was generally pretty good and the song is better than any recent bp song but it's so......................#boring. dispassionate. almost juvenile? it's just kinda bad. a waste of good styling imo #blpk w #text #answers
