can any susanna clarkeheads help me out😭 I was just favourably saying how i think JS&MN does a very acceptable job of not obfuscating how deeply colonialism & racism was woven into the mentality and daily life of regency era england by using a narrator who is very casually orientalist and racist while the actual events of the story challenge those things buttttt then this scene where a fairy takes a black british character to an unspecified north african country and they just stand there judging arab muslims for a while in a way that feels if anything a lot more like modern sanctimonious atheist islamophobia than regency era colonial islamophobia 😭 and i thought maybe it was going for like "these are just normal people going about their daily life in a normal way but the racist narrator is being orientalist" but i found it pretty hard to support their reading especially when both characters in the scene including a fairy who isn't even aware of the existence of human racism appear to be percieving it the same way................ flopped i daresay
