New year, new snippet

Thank you @lilacella - I assume this is sharing a WIP snippet? In honour of your snippet, I’m going to go with the boys’ first class with professor Sprout after the summer break in I Solemnly Swear.

'Please, professor,' Stebbins’ hand shot up - he looked nervous, 'what did Black mean with the cry of the Mandrake being fatal?'

'There is nothing to worry about Stebbins,' Professor Sprout said matter-of-factly, 'the Mandrakes we have here are still very young. As seedlings, their cry won't kill yet, however, they will knock you out for several hours.'

A tempting offer, thought Sirius.

'Now as I am sure none of you want to miss your first day back -'

James sent Sirius a look that plainly told him that James too was weighing up the pros and cons of not putting the earmuffs on properly.

'- take a pair of earmuffs now.'

There was a scramble as everyone tried to seize a pair that wasn't pink and fluffy. Sirius immediately grabbed a pink and fluffy one and turned to James -:

'Here, I got you one!'

Only his voice wasn't the only one saying the words. Sirius' eyes fell to James' outstretched hand, as he too held out a pair of pink and fluffy earmuffs. Fair play.

They both had to supress a laugh, before Sirius grabbed a grey pair from Remus, who just sighed and resigned himself to his new pink one. James turned to do the same, but Peter had ended up with a pink and fluffy pair himself, so James was stuck with his own.

'Now you're the odd one out,' James smirked at Sirius, who decided that was fine by him.

How I feel about this character

I actually think Peter is super interesting, and it's too bad that he doesn't get more attention in the fandom. I think this is a side effect of most stories being focused on romantic ships (wolfstar & jily with Peter as a fifth wheel). Peter clearly worshiped James in school, and to then turn his back on him so violently a few years later - I think that's a potentially really interesting story to tell. From what we see, Peter will do anything to survive. He turns on his friends, he'll live as Snape's personal house-maid or whatever, he lives at Malfoy Manor where they treat him like dirt, and he sticks with Voldemort even though he verbally berates him, just because he thinks it's his best chance at staying alive.

The man is absolutely pathetic, but interesting, character wise!

All the people I ship romantically with this character

No one in particular, really. Maybe Mary MacDonald? I like seeing him in relationships during school. I see him as someone who would be constantly wanting to date someone, even during the war, when most people were focused on fighting, but he'd also probably be very clingy and drive people away.

My non-romantic OTP for this character

Remus! I think Remus was probably a lot more patient with Peter than Sirius or James was, and they probably spent time together when JamesandSirius were off attached at the hip.

My unpopular opinion about this character

If he were considered more conventionally attractive, we'd get more fics of tragic love stories between him and James, Sirius, Remus, Barty Crouch Jr, Regulus Black, Severus Snape, etc.

One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon

Of course, I'd wish that he'd have a backbone and never turn traitor to the Order, turn on James and Lily, etc. But also!

Consider! Percy Weasley is in his dorm room with his pet rat Scabbers, practicing his transfiguration homework, which includes the incantation to force an Animagus back into their human form, which he accidentally aims at his sleeping pet rat, which then turns into a pathetic excuse for a man. Then Peter gets to trade places with Sirius in prison!

How I feel about this character

Love Sirius! Love him the most when he's allowed to be arrogant, rude, loving, mean, and just a complex human. I think it's criminal how much his strength of character gets overlooked. He ran away from his family because he disagreed with their views on blood purity at a young age, bought his own place and lived independently as soon as he was able, joined the Order to fight in a war where he didn't really have anything to gain and he'd likely be facing his own family, escaped Azkaban, swam the sea and walked to Hogwarts to protect Harry! To see him reduced to a shallow version of his character is painful. But he's also not perfect, and his arrogance and cruelty get downplayed as well.

All the people I ship romantically with this character

Love him with Remus or James! I think he respects them both and they both have the ability to soften his sharper edges.

My non-romantic OTP for this character

James Potter. Those two laid eyes on one another on the train and were tied together by a red string of fate from there on. Their love for one another is so, so special.

My unpopular opinion about this character

He didn't hate Albus Dumbledore, and still respected him, even after Azkaban. I don't think he would have done anything Dumbledore said if he didn't respect him, and he very much does what Dumbledore says in OotP (right up until Harry is in mortal peril). He just grumbles about it and is annoyed by it (understandably so).

One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon

Other than wishing he'd lived? I wish we'd seen a year of him as DADA teacher in disguise as someone else while he was in hiding. Only Harry, Hermione and Ron know it's Sirius. Remus gets to be his assistant sometimes. Snape is suspicious, and it drives him nuts. They cause a lot of chaos. Voldemort wouldn't dare take a run at Harry that year.

Love Professor Sprout! I bet her classes were so fun, always being hands-on, practical stuff.

About how much Remus contributed to the Marauders' Map, I once read a fanfic about the creation of the Map (which I can't find it anymore, but it was one of the first fics I read in the HP fandom almost 10 years ago) and it said that the names are listed in order of helpfulness: so Remus contributed less than Peter and both of them contributed, obviously, less than Sirius and James, who I think contibuted equally to the Map actually, but one had to be written first and they are JamesandSirius and PadfootandProngs. I immediately accepted that as headcanon because it makes sense to me that Peter got more involved in Marauders' plans and such than Remus. And it just shows how much Peter was part of this group, which is important to me.

Well if some day you come across the fic again, do share it with me. I am always looking for fics where Remus is shown his canonical average self. Most fics i find are about what a great specimen he was. And i am not even talking about the recent marauders fandom.

Even back in the day when i was into time travel Hermione fics. Remus was this super cool guy there too.

If I read any post second war fic, some casual mention of Remus's absolute greatness is thrown, making me cringe.

This is like an entire gaslight campaign.

With every character, we see equal people for and against.

With Remus, he manipulated everyone so well that he is the only God among humans.

Thanks for sharing your HC. It is interesting and intriguing. Like yes, those who were more involved will be more generous to let the others have first name mention. Or else it will seem that Remus was so selfish, he insisted on his name being the first. 😂 lol.

About Peter. -:

My slowly but steadily developing aversion to Remus has made me more kind and compassionate towards Peter. Now my third favorite Marauder. And if fandom can redeem Snape, Voldemort, Grindlewald, Bellatrix, Regulus, Barty etc. Then this guy should have his own champions too.

Yes he as good as killed James and lily. Yes he was the reason behind Sirius's suffering.

But maybe in an alternate universe he becomes the Trump card. Or he just confesses and comes out clean. Or simply chooses to not participate in war because it scares the bejesus out of him and simply runs away. At the end getting Harry's custody.

i love how you highlight in your prongsfoot analysis - they have less in common than it seems. they should clash. instead they just click so perfectly, fire up together. first talk on the train, james goes 'your family's house sucks' and sirius isn't irked even out of pride. james brazenly doesn't apologize [i think sirius liked this, btw]. “Blimey and I thought you seemed all right!” - and he grins, asks about James' house choice, supports him against Snape. They truly are their own tier.

I loved that anon because it is absolutely true. I am putting my life at stake here by saying this but I think it was actually Sirius' unbiased and easy going reaction towards his family and Gryffindor/Slytherin argument that eased their interaction into its sudden jolt of harmony and soul bond. I believe if roles reversed, James wouldn't be this easy going and I love their friendship through the years, how their relationship changed and shifted and shaped their characters and they ended up - Quite the double act - , with their legacy still there years later despite their tragic lives, in form of fond memories their teachers have from them and advanced magical instruments for the purpose of being - up to no good - . 😂

Their class and sass is on a whole another level, add their unique love ( platonic or romantic) in as well and you will have JamesandSirius not James and Sirius. 🥰

I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN! tbh I was swayed by the new fandom at first but I’ve created my own divergence since. Especially since a lot of that shit is so hetero normative these days :/

I love when Sirius is confident and strong headed and tall and strong, and I love making him listen to classic rock and also metal sometimes. He’s good with his hands and if he was a muggle he’d probably do mechanics since he built that motorbike, but he’s also an artist and finds comfort in creativity, and Effie taught him how to cook and he’s killer at it. And he also likes to explore his gender sometimes because I said so.

I like lanky, skinny, fugly Remus who’s covered in scars and is awkward and doesn’t know how to talk to people sometimes. All he does is read and spew out random music facts (mostly about Bowie) and observe his friends who love being under the spotlight and admires their bravery and struggles to understand why they insist on keeping him around so much.

I love average guy Remus who’s insecure and quiet, and popular guy Sirius who’s got the physique of a model who just falls head over heels for Remus and thinks he’s the most gorgeous person on the planet.

I love when James is compared to the sun because yes, he is bright. All his friends do revolve around him. He 100000% built that group himself and they all adore him and he prides himself of that. But he’s also arrogant, and an arsehole for most of his time in Hogwarts, it’s only once he’s made mistakes and has been put in his place about them that he realises some things need to change. He is so kind and bright and happy around those he loves all the time, but he can be the worst around people he deems undeserving of his kindness. I love Desi James, and I love Latino James. I love James who has the most amazing relationship with his parents and who carries on their care and love and is an easy person to get along with and rely on. I love James who wants everyone to be able to rely on him, and who wants to be the funny guy, and who wants to be known as happy and amazing and as bright as the sun. And he wants these things so bad that it crushes him, and he can’t cope with the weight of everyone finding comfort within him and confiding in him and giving him all their problems because he’s so good at pretending he’s okay when he’s not. I love James who doesn’t rely on anyone apart from his parents, and struggles to even do that with so much time away from them. I love James who finally breaks and lets Sirius take some of the weight and pain and cries when Sirius still loves him (if not loves him more) after seeing all of the ugly bits too.

I love James and Sirius’ relationship. I love when they meet on the train to Hogwarts, I love when they meet as adults, I love when they meet as little little kids, I love when Sirius runs away to James at 16, I love when Sirius runs away to James at 20, I love when they’re the only two people who really see and know each other. I love when they’re so disgustingly codependent they’re basically just one person, I love when they’re so obsessive that it seems kinda creepy to the average outsider. I love when they know everything about eachother. I love when they’re best friends, and I love when they’re lovers, and I love when they’re both, and I love when they’re JamesandSirius above all else.

I love the complexity of the Marauders relationship with Peter. I love when people include him and find ways to have him betray them again. I love when people write him to be the sweet boy they met on the train and spent seven years growing to love. I love Peter who’s best friends with the Marauders. I love Peter who felt left out and lonely, I love Peter who’s insecure and feels second best. I love Peter who’s happy and kind and lovely. I love Peter who’s jealous and angry and malicious. I love perfectly normal Peter just as much as I love morally grey Peter, and just as much as I love fucked up and evil Peter.

I love Regulus. I love the pain that is shared between him and Sirius. I love the complexity of their relationship, the push and pull, bound by blood and brotherhood but even that wasn’t strong enough. I love when they find their way back to eachother, I love when they both run away and heal, I love when Regulus dies before they have the chance to try, I love when Regulus dies before they even want to try, I love when Regulus dies just as they started to try. I love it and I hate it and it hurts me every fucking time. I can appreciate Jegulus, as I can appreciate most ships, but I love Regulus and Barty. I love them all so much and I love that we get to build these characters up from the ground and I love some of the community that has grown out of it. But I also hate the toxicity that comes hand in hand with such a thing.

I saw a post where you said James and Sirius shared clothes until James got too jacked for this to continue.

Once the size difference was becoming apparent they overcame it because they’re geniuses and figured out how to enchant it all to grow and shirk based on which one of them goes to put it on. Like they made it so their clothes can tell them apart. And once Sirius moved into Potter Manor if they didn’t share a room their rooms were joined by a large closet. Everything in it is theirs. Like there is no James’ side vs Sirius’ side it’s just one cohesive collection.

because like, not to be dramatic, but i would die for this fic. i hadn’t read this before and now i’m kicking myself about the fact. one, it’s outsider pov which is literally my absolute favorite of any trope, ever. two, it’s jamesandsirius as one soul, two bodies as it should be. three, it was the absolute best description of these two i’d read ever.

i’m so obsessed w the whole thing, and i literally read it as slowly as possible so i could savor it and it still felt like not enough and i’d read a hundred chapters just like that and oh my god. can u tell i’m in love? (also! absolutely approve of ur headcanon, i love these two being so stubborn about sharing clothes that they carry out intensive spell work they shouldn’t even know/be capable of bc the alternative isn’t acceptable. it’s exactly the kind of dumbassery they’d partake in)

there were so many parts in it i loved but i think moody’s pov has to be my favorite? i love it when these two are in sync and when someone who doesn’t know them at all sees it so it was particularly refreshing and absolute amazing!!! i was giggling the whole way through it (all 4 chapters really)

(also i made the mistake of reading this in public because i cannot get through stuff i like without flapping my arms or kicking my legs frantically so guess it’s a good thing for all of us that the metro was empty today (a rare occurrences)

Prongsfoot Week

Day 4: Favourite type of story to read/write

I’m really open in terms of plot, it’s pretty much just characterisation that seals things for me - but of course characterisation impacts plot. I love stories of caution but eventual determination to act. I really need the intimacy and devotion to be there from friendship level and I also love when there's more there but it's not life-ruining or awkward. I think even the most intensely pining James and Sirius (which I do love) would maintain a base level of comfort and ease around the other because they're best friends first and foremost. Just anything that's in character I will love, I can struggle more with the uber domestic stuff but I get the appeal. 

I personally love writing the small shift from friendship to romance because that’s how (and why) I love James/Sirius so much. I also love stories that touch on the inevitability of them getting together, that acknowledge the easiness they experience with each other as friends. In whatever capacity they’re together, it’s almost the same dynamic and I think nothing much changes when they do make that change. So I love also reading that.

Everything I find myself writing is a take on that, on how the friendship shifts, just with a different catalyst and different timing. I also love established j/s but I find it easier to write them as established when they're a side pairing, though their friends' eyes. I also love the "Remus observes James and Sirius and works out they're together and says nothing" subgenre. There are good Peter ones out there too! And I love reading about them as part of a larger group because I love how they stand out as JamesandSirius vs everyone being normal individuals.

So I was wondering if you had any thoughts on the friendship (well, I guess budding relationship in LMV anyway) between sirius and Lily? Maybe how they became friends or how close they are? Again you're a GENIUS when it comes to hp meta. don't stress about answering if you're busy!

sirius and lily is such a fun one!!! i think the beginnings of their friendship must have been really interesting. in their earlier years there was presumably less tension than what we see later- james and sirius hadnt started ragging on snape quite so much etc- but i think sirius was too engrossed by james to really talk to her much before that. i always imagine lily to have been friends w remus pretty much all the way through hogwarts (tho it got terse during times) and friendly with james during earlier years before things got messy. in my mind sirius and lily probably sort of reluctantly liked each other even during times where they really didnt intend to- so even when james & sirius were reaching peak prattery and butting heads with snape all the time, and when james started obsessing over lily, they still found each other witty and interesting. from lily’s side this was unfortunate because potter and black were fucking assholes and it was already irksome to sometimes get caught up in potter and his group’s antics, but starting to appreciate black’s snarky repartee really was going too far (half of the time it was directed at severus, for god’s sake); from sirius’ it was because this was the girl james had decided he was in love with or what-fucking-ever, she was hardly anything special, so he absolutely didn’t find her charming and quick-witted too. they probably had some iconic back and forth arguments, especially over james’ head once the latter started trying to woo her. and then james decided it was time to grow up some, and while he was keeping a polite distance to remedy his pushiness sirius and lily started accidentally talking sometimes, so by the time she and james were friends the two of them were pretty comfortable with each other.

finding a dynamic would have been weird. i think once it started becoming obvious that james and lily were actually going to be a Thing at some point, sirius took it very badly, for predictable reasons- not so much to james’ face, and he wasn’t awful about it to lily, but he got moody and spent a lot of time brooding and being very sarcastic and rude whenever they were in groups. the fact he very much liked lily after all only made him feel worse. lily on the other hand was too unsure about where she and james stood and where they were going to be able to reassure him much, but she knew what was going on and she felt very bad for upsetting the duo. she figured jamesandsirius out very fast though, so i think at some point she sat herself down and asked herself if she could spend her life happy with the both of them, and only once she’d done that did she go have a frank conversation with sirius and then finally accept james’ offer to go on a proper date. and once she’d had the balls to do that sirius stopped brooding and immediately switched into lily evans fanclub mode, which he has never stopped doing since.

god, what can i say about these two to capture their relationship??? lily and sirius are tremendously fond of each other and extremely close; they live in each other’s pockets almost as much as jamesandsirius. in a way they’re more on similar levels with one another than with james; they read into things in the same way, and they’re both quite prone to theorizing. james /knows/ sirius, wholly, but lily (like remus, in a sense) /sees/ him, and vice versa- it’s an oddly vulnerable relationship. they have a lot of insecurities/worries in common, like lost siblings and not so hypothetical moral conundrums. they share clothes, records, taste in alcohol, and taste in men; they both love creating charms for the fun of it. they also share a number of petty pet peeves, which only james notices and finds hilariously endearing. they butt heads the most out of the group, because james is quite laid-back and tends to be agreed with or supportive, and remus often keeps his frustrations to himself, whereas sirius is always argumentative and provocative and lily doesn’t back down from an argument. most of the time they fight because they enjoy a fight, though- and it’ll be about something like elton john v david bowie. sirius can make lily giggle like nobody else, and the two of them love to learn whatever new dance is in style and then kill it like the perfectionists they are; she is a car buff and adores his motorcycle, so they rigged it together. lily is uniquely good at making sirius lose his composure/cool, and also the only marauder allowed to touch his hair. they both adore The Cat. there is an unspoken oath between them concerning james and whenever they’re in a fight they circle him diligently. sirius taught lily how to set bones using magic. lily showed him how to use all of the appliances in his kitchen. the closest lily has ever come to dying, sirius was the one to pick her up, and neither of them ever told james about it. in fifth year during the height of their fighting lily once caught a dead-eyed sirius sitting precariously in the owlery playing with fire and she sat with him for two and a half hours until he was in a state to go back down.

other anecdotes.... lily had a terrible brief crush on sirius somewhere between third and fourth year, just because he was handsome and clever and one time in potions they got seated together and at some point he got bored and started weaving the flowers into their hair until they matched and wore them like that all day despite the others giving him shit for it. they have joked about threeways with an increasingly bold lack of irony since before james and lily were even dating. lily fucking loves padfoot and uses him to warm her freezing feet. sirius thinks lily is the prettiest girl in the world. at karaokes they fucking kill it. they love to needle james about various quidditch hot takes they have. they can peer pressure like nobody’s business; not a soul can stand up to them. they have very similar politics. they pierced each other’s ears. sirius tolerates lily in his personal space the most. as duellers they are an extremely complementary pair. they have diametrically opposed tastes in movies. they like to speak foreign languages to be dicks.

((A/N: This is… well. It exists.))

James and Sirius were… well JamesandSirius. You never saw one of them without the other, and if you did, they were miserable for having been separated. They were spontaneous and sometimes made rash decisions, but most of those turned out okay, so they didn’t stop. They couldn’t surprise each other, but everyone else, well, they never stopped being surprised by those two.

It was the day before Winter Break started, and everyone was lazing around. There weren’t any classes, and everyone-- teachers and students both-- just wanted to get out of there.

Today, James and Sirius weren’t wreaking havoc like they usually did with their free time. Instead, they were lying on the floor of their dormitory, staring up at the ceiling that was temporarily enchanted to act out The Tales of Beedle the Bard. Currently, it was on ‘The Warlock’s Hairy Heart’, not that either of them were truly watching.

“I’m going to miss you,” James said out of nowhere.

“Unless you’ve got some news for me, mate, we’re going to the same place for break. There won’t be an opportunity to miss me because I’m not gonna leave you alone.”

“I mean after Hogwarts.”

“Again, unless you’ve got some news for me, that doesn’t make sense. We’re getting a flat together, remember?”

James sighed aggravatedly. “You know what I mean.”

“Can’t say I do.” For once, he wasn’t being difficult on purpose, and James was fully aware of that.

“We’re living together next year, but what about after that?”

“We keep living together,” Sirius said, the ‘duh’ in his tone obvious even if he didn’t make the intonation. “Why are you so worried about this anyway?”

“I’m planning.”

“Planning what?”

“The fuck do you think?” James asked, rolling onto his stomach and propping himself up on his elbows so he could look at Sirius.

Sirius tilted his head back for a moment with his back arched to make eye contact, then relaxed again. He shrugged, frowning that he didn’t automatically know what James meant. “If I knew what you were thinking I wouldn’t have had to ask.”

“People get married after graduating from Hogwarts. A few years, then bam, wedding bells and suddenly their best mate lives in a different town and they don’t see each other everyday.”

“Ah.” Sirius tilt his head. “Y’know, you have a point.”

“I know I have a point, Si, that’s--”

“No,” Sirius cut him off, “I mean, that’s a really good point. We just need to make sure we don’t get married.”

James frowned at him. “How do we do that?”

“We get married. To each other.” He rolled in a way that was distinctly uncomfortable, but had the advantage of letting him see James without having to get up. “Let’s get married.”

James raised an eyebrow. “That was a shite proposal.”

Sirius rolled his eyes. “It wasn’t a proposal, it was more like… asking if I should propose.” When James didn’t immediately say anything, Sirius said, expectant, “So?”

Confused, James asked, “‘So’ what?”

“So do you want to get married?”

“Yeah totally,” James said, not even having to pause to think about it. “Can we do it over break?”

“Sure.”

“...That was still a shite proposal.”

Euphemia was equal parts excited and flustered. Excited, because they were getting married and she could officially claim Sirius as her son. Flustered, because she had thought they were still pining over each other but suddenly she was planning a wedding for two people who insisted they didn’t care how nice it looked, they just wanted to get married. She would roll her eyes and mutter, “Boys,” when that would happen. If they were a little bit older, they would put more stock in this day (although she did appreciate that they were more excited for their life after this than this single day).

For all that it was their wedding and she knew she should respect their wishes, she did ignore that bit. They might say they didn’t care if it looked gorgeous or where it was or what they were wearing, but she knew they would regret not having decent wedding pictures. So despite her and Fleamont’s desires to make this wedding opulent, they settled on a simple wedding in their backyard. She wanted to drape the area in gold and white, fill it with all the glory her boys deserved.

Instead she focused on hanging fairy lights, filling the empty area with soft, warm light. She got them and Remus and Peter suits, she bought a few bouquets because like it or not, each of the grooms was going to be holding one, for pictures if nothing else. She didn’t bother with chairs, knowing the union would be short, and the guest list comprised of four-- six if you counted the officiant and photographer, which she didn’t.

She watched as Sirius linked his fingers with James, giving his hand a comforting squeeze and started to tear up. She knew that they belonged together, but she hadn’t been sure she’d live long enough to see it happen. She leaned into Fleamont’s side and could tell from the way he molded into it that he was thinking the same thing.

The officiant wasn’t saying much, more giving direction for when they needed to do what. Personally, she would have liked someone who knew the boys, someone who could give them the romantics they deserved but didn’t ask for.

He asked Sirius to place the ring on James’s finger, which he did, giving his hand a light kiss after sliding it on and smiling softly at him.

Sirius closed the door behind them and rested against it, still smiling at James. He felt like he hadn’t stopped since the ceremony. He chuckled, “I can’t believe Mum was so into that.”

James shook his head. “I can. I think she’s just happy you’re officially part of the family, y’know?”

Sirius hummed but didn’t dwell on it. “She didn’t ask how we got together, or when, or… anything really. I kinda thought she would.”

James shrugged, undoing his tie and the top buttons on his shirt. Then his coat came off, then the vest, then the shoes. He felt like a bloody cake with all these tiers, not particularly caring at the moment that he looked resplendent in black and gold-- he just wanted to be comfy.

Sirius took off his coat, but stopped after that, just watching James rub his hands over his face-- after a small break to take off his glasses. “So.”

James looked at him expectantly.

Sirius looked around the room in a showy way. “It is our wedding night. I hear there are traditions about this sort of thing.”

James snorted and said, “Yeah, cause we’re so traditional,” but held out his hand for Sirius, pulling him in for a kiss. Sirius opened his mouth for him automatically, pressing up against him without hesitation, though he couldn’t feel much through his suit. James smiled against his mouth, leaning back to unbutton his vest for him.

Afterwards, Sirius hummed, snuggling up to James under the covers. “I love you.”

James giggled, then it turned into a full laugh, making him sit up so he didn’t asphyxiate or summat.

Sirius glared up at him, but not because he was actually upset-- well, he was a little bit. James gave great cuddles and now he was gone. “Are you coming back down yet?”

With a last little laugh and shake of his head, James flumped back down to the bed. “I love you too, you tosser.” He shifted to his side to face Sirius. “And just so you know? You could’ve said that before we got married.”

Sirius shrugged unrepentantly. “You could’ve done too.”
