Headcanon: Santa Claus

River never believed in Santa when she was a kid. Christmas in general wasn't something celebrated in her home, and she didn't find out what Santa even was, until the single solitary year she attended a high school; and overheard some other students talking about how excited their younger siblings were about 'the visit'.

She of course, at the time, thought it was incredibly dumb to believe in things that weren't real, and to perpetuate a lie like that... She thought perhaps the parents/siblings/etc were trying to punish the kids in question by playing a 'long game', to crush them emotionally at some point. Still, the idea ended-up sticking with her in the end all the same.

It wasn't until Jamey started whittling his way past her walls and showed her how to actually live a little, that she came to love and enjoy the holidays the way she does now. When Dagny was born, River made a rock-solid promise to give Dags as much of the childhood she never had that she could. That includes Santa, flying reindeer, and all the bells and whistles that come with the holidays.

It certainly hasn't been easy. There've been plenty of 'close calls', some where's she's had to scramble home through the window due to one of those rare December jobs keeping her late; and Dagny's been calling in a panic about cookies and milk because she has to be there to help set them up, or Santa will miss both of them. But so far, she's been able to keep the magic alive for her kid.

Dagny is a smart cookie though, and has already begun questioning a little; and River can tell that it probably won't be too much longer until she figures-out the 'cold-hard truth' about jolly ol' St. Nick. But she'll continue to treasure those memories long past the time her daughter stops believing, too.
