Bad Newts: Amphibians are in Serious Trouble

My colleagues and I have just had a paper published in Nature, based on our efforts to assess almost all amphibian species for the IUCN Red Lists. The major takeaway messages:

It is a bad time to be an amphibian

Two fifths of all amphibians are threatened with extinction.

Salamanders are the most threatened group; three fifths of all salamanders are threatened with extinction!

Climate change is a major driver of amphibian declines globally

Habitat loss, especially due to agriculture, is a problem for the vast majority of amphibians

Chytrid pandemics have caused and continue to cause catastrophic declines of both salamanders and frogs

Protected areas and careful management are working as strategies! They are actively improving the outlook of some species

As many as 222 amphibian species may have gone extinct in recent times; of those, 185 are suspected extinct but not yet confirmed.

Roshan walks with the two Potts, gazing around at the fields and forests painted in warm colors by the setting sun. He remarks, "It is a lovely view from here."

Gazing outward, past the broken walls he had put up 20 years ago, Arthund nods and says, "Forgot. Forgot how... how pretty it all is."

I recently finished running an original oneshot for some friends, The Reaching Woods. It was a story about a little village surrounded by a big wall and the nearby forest's sudden overgrowth threatening to crush it all. It was also a story about blame and guilt.

Arthund Potts, when we met him, could barely speak at all. Too many years spent drinking and weeping. If he was even conscious he was all grunts and sloppy gestures. The scene above was at the end of the oneshot (okay, eighteenshot), once the party returned from the dark, evil woods.

Okay I can't work on it right now but someone please remind me in like a week that I want to make a cria plushie, closer to life size than I usually make my plushies

#my aunt and uncle run an alpaca farm and it's cria season #and they keep posting pictures and they are so ridiculously adorable #I mean technically they are not my aunt and uncle #they are my dad's friends that I (as a small child) unilaterally decided were family #because my uncle is really really good with animals and they always had a bunch #and I loved animals so much as a little kid I was like okay clearly they have to be family #so that I can visit more often and see puppies. the only solution #and then I taught my little brother that they were our aunt and uncle #not really on purpose but also by that time it stuck #and I did get to see the puppies more often!#and now they run a farm! and people bring them rescue animals all the time #I haven't seen them in a few years but last time I was there my uncle walked up to me and handed me a sheep #and then I was just standing there very surprised holding a sheep who was also very surprised #the first time I ever saw a frog in real life (and not at a zoo) was at my aunt and uncle's house #it wasn't their frog it was just a frog chilling on the wall by their door #that's not relevant I just think they are super cool #both frogs and my aunt and uncle

Finally knitted Halloween socks that I've been meaning to knit since I bought this yarn last year!

The yarn is from "SavannahRoseHandmade" from the 90s Halloween Collection (sold out now UGH [understandable, but UGH]) and is visually inspired by the movie Scream (1996). I saw the colour pooling effect on their sample swatch when they shared the yarn collection images on Reddit last year, and was immediately like, 'Holy shit it's just like CRT TV static!!' And I had to get it. (And then life happened and I didn't get around to knitting them until now lol).

And unfortunately, I'm SO IN LOVE WITH IT!! THE EFFECT DID TRANSLATE TO SOCKS AND NOW IT'S LIKE, AHHH I NEED MORE. I don't know if I have enough yarn left to make an additional pair, so I'll have to figure out how to weigh it and the socks and see if the weight compares (really don't wanna end up with 3 socks and not enough for the 4th lol). But yeah. I'm so glad I got to do this. The yarn colouration was SO fun to work with, and the yarn was a nice and smooth 1-ply which was a huge relief from the fluffy yarn on the socks I'd been working on just before this. And yes, I did intentionally take this photo in front of those books because of the spiral-ish pooling.

Can I just also... like... holy fuck, man. I LOVE when yarn pools into unique patterns. It's the best phenomenon ever. And especially like for this one being black and white? That subtle grey transition from stark white to pitch black is EVERYTHING. Like I never would have thought one could create yarn that would pool EXACTLY like TV static rolling down the screen when knit. Major nostalgia vibes. I can feel the forcefield.

Also, started these babies September 27 and finished the second sock today October 3rd, which may be a new record for me knitting socks, I was so fucking excited. I even have a big ole 'writers bump' on my finger from the way I hold my knitting needles lmao (was also knitting a different pair of socks before this, too), and my arthritis is Not happy, but screw you, arthritis! I'M HAPPY.

Side note: it would be cool to pair this yarn with like a red addition somehow. Get a Saw vibe going bc of the TV static pooling effect. (I do love Scream though.) Or you could even probably take it a The Ring route with like a fly applique or something. So many horror movie staples with TV static effect, and not enough Scream yarn to test them out!!

Bonus image when the socks were a WIP:

I had my new tooth and doll eye stitch markers going. I DO have bloody murder weapon stitch markers, but none of them are a buck knife (Ghostface's weapon), so I went for general Halloween vibes instead (even tho I use stitch markers like this year-round lol).

Love it when mages/spellcasters in stories have slightly otherworldly traits. Unnatural eye colors/pupil shapes, unusual skin tones/hues, sharp/animal like teeth, nails, or ears, fur/horns/scales/feathers where they'd normally have none, etc.

#dunno what a normal tag for this would be so #world building #dragon age #bg3 #i am adopting this into my dragon age canon btw #i love thé idea of mages in thedas having this extra something that can make it harder for them to blend in sometimes #some of them could be super subtle like morrigan's glinting yellow/golden eyes #or some could be more obvious and harder to hide #like imagine anders having to wear gloves/hand wraps all the time because he has claws/monstrous hands #or an apostate on the run needing to hide their frog shaped pupils from everyone they meet #a circle mage being a pariah because everyone thinks they're half Qunari because of their horns #hehe anyway it can be applied to any world with magic in it #maybe the trait even corresponds to the magic type that's most natural for them to learn/cast #a wizard specialized in water magic who has fish scales/gills #a sorcerer born with owl eyes/feathers finds it easier to cast magic at night #a mage who finds fire magic exceptionally easy to cast has claws and can breathe fire #it's just so much fun to play around with
