My School President low-key has some of the best color-grading, lighting, and costuming of any GMMTV production. It's not showy, not composed like a painting. It's casual, vibrant, crisp, and character-driven.

Queer, too, but prosaically. Whereas Bad Buddy asserts its queerness by subverting BL tropes, MSP synthesizes queer techniques with those of BL, which shows up in the production. We get queer-associated neons (think the ITSAY series or cinematographer Rath) in one scene and, in the next, sun and candy-coated color as chaste as Cooking Crush. Gay little cardigans over Thai BL staple school uniforms and shorteralls for the beach. The fantasy of gayness and the familiarity of living out actual gay experiences merge, so there's little of the nostalgic vaseline filter on the lens. And there's depth to the blacks and shadows that make the colors stand out more, currents of deeper emotions in a comedic world. The contrast is not gritty. Rather, its clarifying. We get to be close and intimate with these characters, their fears and burgeoning feelings.

The production isn't there to tell the story itself, but to invite us up close to the conversations, faces, and silly dances without getting in the way of the laughs or the love. Clear eyes, full hearts, and such. A high-school comedy-musical with a production that sports its stumbling desire for a rainbow sincerely and unashamed, like the gay theater-kid energy its celebrating.

Listen I absolutely love the Tree Lady/Blacksmith! She's wonderful and cool

However, I do feel that we get a bunch of info and lore that contradicts a bunch of things or starts to make other info fall apart

Namely, the getting through the door thing.

In the 9th episode, the Cat's explanation that Neo can't go through because she has nothing to go back to made enough sense to me.

Ok, sure! Perhaps Afterans cannot leave? Or, perhaps the Cat can't because they are important here? Who knows, but that's an interesting rule! Cool!

Then the Blacksmith explains about the Brother Gods and how they were given a door to leave, and the door would be open for them to return whenever they like. Including, any of their creations.

So then.... why couldn't the Cat leave??? My best guess is the Gods made it so that the Cat couldn't leave, so that they can stay and do their job for them. But that seems cruel (though, making a creature to take over your job for you and to take on everyone else's burdens but never have it's own burdens eased is also super cruel)

The Cat just wanted to go explore and find out why they were abandoned, how is that wrong?

Also, that "you can't get through the door without attachments to another world" thing seemed quite arbitrary afterward. Yes, the group have reasons to go back, but it just doesn't seem to matter anymore after the Cat is.... dealt with

And side note: does this now mean that the Tree/Blacksmith is THE God of this universe? As Ever After seems to be the origins of everything now. I know it seems the Blacksmith isn't necessarily the actual Tree, but still. She's quite important

He never should've left his office, he never should've taken this job in the first place– the whirring of gears and servos stopped both Jeremy and his racing thoughts in their tracks. Up, they sounded like they came from above — with a yelp and a thud, he lost his footing as he turned and came face-to-face with the pink and white fox. Luckily, he'd managed to keep his grasp on his flashlight, shining it directly in the animatronic's eyes. God, stay still, stay away– he just needed it stunned long enough for him to scramble backwards and put some distance between them.

"Leave me alone! Shit! I get it, you guys don't want me here! Well, I don't want to fuckin' be here, either! Just– just leave ... leave me alone and I'll stay out of your way. I'm not — I'm not trying to cause trouble, or whatever you think I'm doing. I literally just work here!" Was he rambling? He was rambling. Not only was he rambling, he was trying to bargain with a haywire animatronic. A fucking robot. What was this job doing to him?

Flashlight still clutched in his shaking hand, he kept it aimed at the bot, flicking the button on and off in quick bursts in an attempt to keep it stunned until he'd made it around the corner into the next room — the main room, thank god, he could see the music box, where he'd been trying to get to this whole time — and gotten a chance to get back on his feet again. All the bright lights and the flashing — an attempt to overload its processors, or whatever the fuck the guy on the phone had said. God, if Jeremy made it out of this alive, he had some very choice words to share with that guy.

"Look — I'm just trying to fix the box. It's not winding right, and I promise that if you let me go figure out why I'll go back to my office and you won't have to deal with me for the rest of my shift as soon as I'm done. Please? I don't– I don't even know why you're mad at me. I didn't even do anything. I'm just trying to do my job," he repeated. It was the truth, after all. What else was he to say?

With one glance cast at the main stage — completely empty, which was worrying in its own right — and one cast over his shoulder at the hallway he'd just escaped from, he decided to make a break for the box. I probably won’t talk a lot about politics here but I hate how people, who aren’t affected by the bill or whatever being passed, complain about the bill or whatever. I live in a relatively small town in a state that is pretty liberal and open minded. My mom calls the town that we live in the ‘Trump Country’ of the state. Basically the town is relatively poor (we are being forced to cut fundings to the schools, many beloved teachers are being fired, our library is only open like two days a month if we are lucky) and most of the residents are elderly people. I’m lucky and I actually have a really good house but many of the people are living in crappy little houses that suck. Our town is also notorious for losing power at the slightest wind, or having construction going on during the morning while all the kids and teenagers are trying to get to school. The reason my mom calls our town the ‘Trump Country’ of where we live is because all of the old people that live here are very much conservative Christians. To be fair it’s not awful, our schools are really supportive and we have a lot of support, but the elderly people are definitely not supportive. There are Trump signs all over our town and a transphobic guy almost became our school’s superintendent. One thing about our town is that there hasn’t been an override passed on anything in a really long time. Another thing to know about our town is that our schools are really really shitty and outdated. Almost all schools are original schoolhouses from when the town was first founded. In my 2019-2020 school year, before lockdown, our school was being renovated and they found asbestos in the ceilings so we were forced to be on the first floor for basically the whole year (We were in our actual classrooms for maybe 1-2 months before lockdown started) . The funding that the schools got from the pandemic was really really helpful because they were finally able to renovate the schools, get better desks and chairs, and they were able to give us free lunch. Now that there is no more pandemic money the schools are back to being poor so they have to lay off a bunch of teachers and take away a bunch of activities. There is no more language or band in the middle school and the drama department is just barely staying afloat and it might get cut next year. The town decided to vote on an Override for the schools so that children could continue to enjoy doing things like band and language without having to fire practically all of their staff. Now, as mentioned before, most of my town is older people who don’t have kids in school. The override would increase taxes a little bit which makes sense. The older people, instead of looking at all of the children who are now being forced to leave the school system in our town and instead pay a lot of money for school choice, decided that they couldn’t handle a raise in their taxes, no matter how small. It should be noted that all of these old fuckers live in actual houses and they voted no, while the people living in the shitty little houses without air conditioning voted yes on this bill because they all have children. Now children are being forced to leave their friends and change schools if they want to do band before ninth grade.
