ok so i talk a lot abt how i find inverted detective stories/howcatchems more compelling than whodunnits but i feel like knives out v glass onion shows like. the fundamental difference between a rly good howcatchem an a rly good whodunnit and why i will always ultimately prefer howcatchems. (the howcatchems im mostly thinking of here besides knives out include columbo, hannibal [the book series and nbc hannibal], and death note)

obviously knives out subverts the distinction between those genres in the first place, but like fundamentally knives out is about showing us the perspective of the person trying to evade the detective while glass onion is showing us the detective's perspective. if we are seeing the story primarily from the perspective of the person trying to avoid detection, that type of story if more compelling to me even if, like in knives out, they don't actually end up being "the killer" or a villain protagonist.

people often think of the killer's perspective as the less relatable one, but being positioned as having motives directly contrary to the motives of the figure of authority, while being forced to cooperate with them anyway, is a position that a lot more people have been in and can relate to i think (besides it being the overall more difficult and sympathetic position to be in). and the person who's eyes we're seeing through has committed the most unforgivable sin possible. so a good howcatchem allows the audience to feel that sick fear of being the most hated, the most evil and irredeemable person possible. even if we're rooting for the detective, it allows us to empathize with someone who's committed the worst possible crime, and imagine what we would do under similar circumstances. (in knives out, this is taken to its most extreme, where even the victim is rooting for the apparent killer)

in a whodunnit sympathy for the killer is not necessary, and can even detract from the plot since the story needs to spend an equal amount of time focusing on several potential killers for the payoff of the reveal at the end. the killer can be completely unlikable and impossible to sympathize with, like in "glass onion", and the story can still work. their perspective can be safely dismissed except when its relevant to the mystery.

in a howcatchem on the other hand, "the killer" is not just one of many potential answers to a riddle. the killer is the single person that the detective has to understand and empathize with completely in order to solve the case. hannibal and death note are of course all about blurring the line between the killer and the detective, implying that to truly understand the killer the detective has to have a sort of super-empathy, and be able to understand the way the killer thinks by "getting into their head", often losing parts of themselves in the process (i think this is true of all dn adaptations but is basically explicitly stated in the musical). the killer and the detective have apparently opposite goals, but because of the level of empathy required to catch and evade one another, they become one in the same. even in columbo and knives out where the blurring between the detective and the killer is less of a central theme than it is in the other examples i mentioned, the detective is still unusually kind to the killer, even friendly, and the killer struggles not to be charmed by the detective, struggles to stay away from them despite the eminent danger that the detective represents. even if the detective's goal is still ultimately to find the truth, their kindness toward the person who they know to be a killer is genuine. unlike in a whodunnit, in a howcatchem the relationship between the detective and the killer is the heart of the story.

when we are seeing from the perspective of a watson in a whodunnit, we want the truth to be revealed, we want the killer to be seen. we watch the detective uncover the truth while they explain to us as outsiders how he got there. but in a howcatchem the killer and the watson become one in the same. we are the killer, but we still want what the watson wants. we want to be seen, wholly and completely, by the detective. we want to purge ourselves of what we've done wrong and be seen for what we tried to do right. only the singular "greatest detective", uniquely better than all other detectives, uniquely capable of divine retribution, could possibly see us. we cannot allow anyone else to judge us, anyone else would see only the crime and the criminal and not the person behind it.

we, as both the killer and the audience, love the detective. the detective is charming and clever and impressive, strange, mysterious and aloof. the detective knows what we did and is kind to us anyway. we are the killer and we want to be made to confess. we want to lose to someone better than us, smarter than us, kinder than us. only the detective can reveal our sin, only the detective can see all and still forgive us. in both types of detective stories the detective represents divine punishment, but only in howcatchems does the detective also represent divine forgiveness. the detectives singular goal may be to reveal and punish sin but the detective will always love the sinner. we as the killer will confess to nobody but a god.

HELLO I come with news!!

I was delivering some food via my interstellar food delivery service and the delivery address was Skaro!! I was a bit surprised because I had picked up the food from a lovely indulgent mom-and-pop shop a few planets away, and I hadn’t ever considered that people on Skaro would want comfort food!

But anyways, I delivered it of course (I take my job as an interplanetary food delivery person very seriously) and who would have thunk it, the orderer was Davros!! It took a while to get to his quarters, since Skaro isn’t super friendly to visitors and I had to dodge laser-fire left and right on my way to Davros’ place. But once I got there, he was v pleased to see me (or the food, more accurately). He explained that he doesn’t really eat often, if at all, but he learned that his favourite rabbit loves a certain type of food and so he instantly placed an order for all varieties of that food type!!

As I was unpacking the food from the state-of-the-art delivery bag (which puts the temperature, texture, and freshness of the food in stasis so that you never get a soggy delivery, and so that it’s always exactly how it should be. Consistency is key), I was surprised at how eager Davros was to talk about you. He really seemed to have a special place in his heart for you!

He also made sure to check the food for tampering and safety, of course. He didn’t remove it from its stasis (apparently he was preparing it for a surprise date later that evening and wanted it to stay fresh for you) but he scanned it within an inch of its life to make sure it was safe. No poisons, no toxins, no textures that he knows you hate. Once he was sure, he paid me and sent me on my way. I kind of expected to be killed, tbh, just based on his reputation, but honestly it seemed like he was in a really pleasant mood because he was thinking and talking about you.

and the point is that it’s neat how jeremy’s whole thing is being Guided by other people for basically the whole story but obviously is still v at the center of things and has a whole arc that way....he makes a Decision and takes Action in going to the payless & everything for sure, & he’s of course not Truly completely passive ever b/c no character is gonna be, but like, the Action he decides to take is “i can’t do this by myself (change things) & i need someone else to steer everything” and then that’s what Happens, and you get LGW as the anti-defying-gravity as joe says, and then even in act 2 the culmination of the climax of the overall story and jeremy’s arc isn’t him being like “haha i’ve completely won the conflict!” (even though he has, he just didn’t Know he was winning the conflict at the time) vs. making a decision and taking an action on his own terms based on his own judgment and wants while also thinking he’s just going to lose that ability to Act of his own agency beyond this.....and that of course he’s not Only being guided around by the squip, but also letting everyone else set the course & steer an interaction while often reacting to what they’re doing / often only taking “initiative” (the squip’s...) based on predicting/presuming what that person Wants, aka what he does still v much defined by other people, and playing by these certain rules, and if someone pushes his head back he’s just going with that flow, and even having had the issue that he felt like he was just Player 2 to michael the whole time.............i think it’s neat

umm hi idk if ur the best person to ask this necessarily but i dont rly have anyone to talk to abt these specific things irl so here it goes. *deep breath*

so ive been wanting (more like needing, rly) to convert to judaism for years, and last year i actually managed to go to a service and briefly talk to the rabbi. he seemed v friendly and welcoming but bc of various life stuff in the meantime i haven't been able to go back yet and i'm so so scared that even if ppl are friendly and welcoming now they wont be when they find out im bi AND trans AND crazy/disabled AND i have an eating disorder (food holidays? super difficult). i know these are all things that its possible to work thru/with and i know of transtorah etc but i havent been able to find anything like that for my country/language. historically ive just never lasted v long in any communities bc once i stop intentionally hiding myself ppl dont usually want to deal w my "baggage" anymore and i get left behind and i dont think i could bear that in this case.

i know a part of this is just internalized self hatred/self sabotage but its also not like these things dont have a basis in reality/experience. do you have any advice/experience that could help? im becoming so accustomed to repressing this stuff again that ive started feeling like some white girl that just wants to be ~ethnic~ again and i dont want to lose what little progress ive made so far. like i said, at this point (after years and years of soul searching and repressing) i rly do feel like not converting is actively harming myself but im also so terrified of rejection i dont know what to do

Just be honest with your Rabbi (and if you can't find one near you, see if you can find someone online) about your situation and your challenges, they should be able to figure out a track that works for you. (As for food holidays, even the most strict halacha will never force you to damage your health. I don't fast on fasting holidays because of my chronic illness.) Initial rejection can be a thing with Jewish conversion but only so that you can prove you're really serious about it by coming back, so don't take it personally.

I would also recommend getting some therapy if you can or otherwise trying to work on yourself, because like you said it seems a lot of your obstacles revolve around not feeling worthy of conversion rather than anything actually based in reality!

okay firstly to premise, i think sapnap is a pretty shy guy himself. he’s absolutely the guy who refuses to correct a waiter after they read their order back to him wrong

so he would get it. i don’t really think he would try to push you out of your comfort zone

lets say you guys met in a csgo lobby lol. sapnap was practicing before a stream, playing with strangers, and you popped up

and you didn’t speak for the first like. five rounds. you were AMAZING with last minute clutches but you never spoke so people just kind of assumed you didn’t have ur mic on

except one round, sapnap lost focus and nearly ruined the round, forgetting to call out his location for a cover

luckily you came in with the clutch and shot the enemy before they could get to sapnap, saving the round

and so while in the lobby, sapnap turns on his mic and just “[user], thanks for saving my ass out there.”

and your voice just comes through, a little clipped and very shy, “no problem,” before your mic is muted again

sapnap ends up saving ur gamer tag and inviting you whenever he needs someone to play with or fill a lobby

this turns into playing every day, and you guys become rlly good friends thru the screen. you both keep to yourselves for the most part, a strict csgo relationship if you will

You seem to know quite a bit abt venom and I don’t rly know who else to ask so…..I’ve been wanting to pick up reading the comics but I’m not rly sure where to start so I was wondering if you have any thoughts on where to begin/ what I should read first thanks!!

I have lots of thoughts!!! This is long and im sorry.

Fair Warning: If you are looking for the movie storylines, you will not find them. The movie storylines, to my understanding, are an amalgamation of different arcs from the comics. The recent movies are not comic-compliant for their origin stories meaning the other content isnt going to line up w comic-canon perfectly ( I can talk more about this if anyone is curious!)

Short answer 1: there is no good place to start just pick up a Volume 1 from any author and go at it.

Short Answer 2: Mike Costa's 2016 run. Volume #1: Homecoming (leads into the most recent run by Cates and Stegman and you can work backward after you catch up)

Long Answer:

It depends on how much back story you want and what stories youre looking for. Venom goes through many different iterations and hosts over the years so theres a few different places you could start based on ur personal story tastes and what you want out of the comics. Im going to outline the general runs from newest to oldest.

Keep in mind i havent read all of the comics yet so im going off of what i know and my own experiences working through the comics.

Note: In general, you get more bang for your buck by buying Omnibuses, complete collections, collected editions, volumes, etc instead of individual issues. (I only buy back issues for collecting purpose or for ongoing series). You can also read them for free online if you dont like paying money for things (personally i like owning things but w/e)

Anyway:

If you want to really see the relationship between eddie and venom you can start w the Mike Costa run from 2016 or the Donny Cates run from 2018. I LOVE the donny cates run but theres some backstory and info you may miss if you dont have other knowledge of venom from previous comics. (Flash Thompson, Cletus Kassidy/Carnage info mainly) Most of it is easily google-able though and if youre jumping into later issues im guessing you dont care too much about spoilers so google away! I think the Cates and Stegman run of venom is so so good it adds some dark story elements and new layers to the character of Eddie (#11 and #12 will hurt you in a good way). It also adds some mythology and additional lore to the symbiote that i kinda love. This is also the most recent run and it ended earlier this year. The venom comics will begin a new run next month i believe but i have no idea how beginner friendly that will be.

The Costa run will require you to know a little about Flash Thompson, but again all easily google-able. As i mentioned above, this directly leads into the Cates run. The costa run starts as the transition between the symbiote being w Flash Thompson and going back to Eddie Brock through Lee Price and then the story follows Eddie.

Speaking of Flash Thompson, this is a good place to start if you want the full lead up to where the comics are now. Flash Thompson as Agent Venom comics are from the Rick Remender and Cullen Bunn runs, beginning in 2011. This was part of a Rebirth for the character and lasted for i believe 40-something issues. There are 3 large complete collections (2 for Remender and 1 for Bunn) or theres smaller collected volumes. (This leads into the Space Knight story line which will then put you at the Costa run.)

If you wanna start with Venom #1 in his solo comics, David Michelinie's 1993 Lethal Protector is the first issues of venom solo comics and i can outline where to go from there as these issues are usually collected in like limited runs with series titles (ex. Venom: The Madness, Venom: Seperation Anxiety, Venom: Carnage Unleashed etc.) instead of just having the volume numbers and it can get confusing v quickly. The Venomnibuses collect a lot of those early issues and story arcs along with some appearances in other characters' comics all in order. Theres 3 Venomnibuses currently that collect all the venom comics (plus bonus issues) up to 2003 i think? So that includes all the OG venom solo run from Michelinie and the Daniel Way runs and would set you up to start the Agent Venom story arc. Again this is pricey if your buying omnibuses but theyre also like 1000 pages and cheaper per issue in the long run.

If you want REAL OG venom and to start from the beginning, Marvel Comics has an Epic Collection for venom called Symbiosis that collects a good amount of venom appearances in the Amazing Spider-Man series before he got his own series, including Eddie's origin story. Although this collection does miss some crucial story points like #361-364 (i think) which is the first fight between carnage venom and spiderman and #375 which is the point where vemom/eddie go to San Francisco (also first canon appearance of Ann Weying) and is basically the launch point for the 1993 6 part Lethal Protector series (as mentioned above). Those missing issues i THINK are on a spiderman collected edition, you can also buy back issues online or just read them for free online if u feel the burning desire to read them.

Like i said, theres no qrong place to start it mainly just depends on how you wanna do it. Some people are purists and wanna start from the very beginning, others may just wanna dive in and work backwards (basically what i did, i started on either end eventually ill meet in the middle).

Wilson had just been meandering looking for a rock field. Very skilfully, completely randomly avoiding walking towards the area he last saw a beefalo herd. Like the proper scaredy cat he knows he is.

Which meant he noticed the unexpected running robot with a bunch of beefalo following. Mostly by the noisiness of it. His pointy ears aren’t for show, after all. So he halts his walking to look they way he heard it, watching as the beefalo leave their target. Startled by the fallen survivor, Wilson ran over to see if they were alright. The very-not-fleshiness of them was freaky, but he’s seen weirder living creatures. They talked so they must be friendly since they’re on the surface.

“Are you still alive?” He asked, poking the fallen person. Wilson already knew they weren’t ‘okay’.

If I were to give writers the benefit of the doubt, I think those descriptions of Pietro aren’t intended to be like the defining traits of his character. Usually when someone describes him that way, it’s because they’re personally pissed off with him. It’s fine bc we’ve all said mean things about people when they’ve annoyed us, but it becomes annoying when people fixate on one throwaway line and decide that it’s the basis for his entire character.

I think this is the panel where people are getting their diagnosis of Pietro as a sociopath, from Pietro’s appearance in the Scarlet Witch solo.

The solo as a whole was…meh. Tbh I can’t remember much else about it, but the Pietro issue was fucking horrible and I hated scrolling through it to get that screenshot. This post by @those-celestial-bodies​ nicely explains my issues with Wanda’s characterisation here, though. It was one line in one issue of a comic from a writer who didn’t obviously didn’t give a shit about Pietro, and who just used him for the sake of creating a bit of unnecessary drama. (also, why’s Pietro wearing converse-looking things over his suit?)

ANYWAY. Any character like Pietro is bound to be misconstrued. He’s complicated and full of contrasts, and some people don’t see that. Plenty of people want their characters to be one thing and one thing only, and they boil them down to one trait and ignore everything else. In Pietro’s case, people might boil him down to being impatient and blunt and keeping to himself. Which is fine, whatever, do what u want with characters. 

I do think it helps to acknowledge where those aspects of his personality come from, though. He might seem impatient to most people, but considering his mutation, he’s just being patient too quickly for them to notice. What feels like hours of patience for Pietro might feel like minutes to other characters. In his mind, he’ll spend a good while thinking about how to respond to somebody, and decide that bluntness is the best way forward. To his mind, things are already slow enough without beating around the bush with niceties for an extra ten minutes.

Does this look like a sociopath to you?? He just finished recovering from an injury, and he gave himself another one to save his teammate. His teammates (not including Sam, love you Sam) are often rude to him, and they insult him and call him names and complain about him, but he still goes out of his way to save them when they mess up. (Also I know I complained about the weird shoes over his costume before, but it looks worse here with no shoes. Horrible purple tights)

Also I just remembered this; they hadn’t been on a team together for 24 hours yet, and Remy spent the whole time antagonising Pietro, accusing him of being a spy, and generally being annoying. But when he got caught in a trap, Pietro was desperate to save him straight away. If he were such a sociopath, he wouldn’t have reacted in that way, I’m sure (especially not for a man he hardly knew and probably couldn’t stand).

He might find it hard to socialise with people, but not to the point of sociopathy. His mind works differently to most people’s, and it’s probably hard for him to deal with people who aren’t used to his eccentricities. I’m sure he’s the first to admit he’s not easy to get along with, but he’s friendly with a good number of people he likes.

It’s the same with Tommy, these two panels absolutely did a number on him:

Tommy and Pietro are both heroes for a reason, though, and it’s because they want to help people. Their powers might not be the most glamorous, and the extent of what they do might not always be appreciated, but they still do it, putting themselves at risk for their teammates and strangers alike. And they keep doing it, despite how their teammates treat them.

And I know people like to talk about Tommy and Wanda bonding, and Billy and Pietro having a lot in common, but I rly do think Pietro and Tommy would become close. It would probably be weird at first, especially for Pietro, to have someone going at his speed, but he’d appreciate having someone he doesn’t need to slow down for.
