Sick Days- Bucky Barnes
A/N: We interrupt your regularly scheduled chapter to say.... I'm sick AGAIN. Its been just about 2 weeks since I fully recovered from my cough (and almost 6 weeks since I first showed symptoms last time.) I've been under a lot of stress lately to find a job so I can pay my bills, but hopefully the recovery from this round is faster.
pairing: James "Bucky" Barnes x Reader
Words: 1472
Warnings: gender neutral reader (no pronouns), NO Y/N (just 'Doll'), Sick reader, just a whole lot of fluff and soft Bucky, passively edited.

______________________
It started as just a funny feeling in your chest, you couldn’t really describe it, but you didn’t let it worry you.
Then, the next morning you spent 10 minutes coughing up the worst-tasting phlegm you’d ever imagined. Thinking that that was the last of it, you mentioned nothing of it to the team, the doctor, or your overly concerned boyfriend. But as the night went on and your throat began to dry, that little cough tip-toeing back in, you knew it would be worse than you had assumed. But you still ignored it for the most part; Nothing a good swig of NyQuil and some rest couldn’t do. You’d deal with it in the morning.
But now here you were in bed, wool socks on, two sweatshirts wrapped around you, and piles and piles of blankets over top, yet you were still shivering as if you had just stepped outside naked in the middle of winter. You had tried a shower, but it only warmed half of you, the other half just standing cold and wet away from the spray. You had even tried your microwavable hot pack; it worked for a while, but its heat dwindled quickly with time.
An unproductive cough forced its way out of your throat, following itself up with a throbbing headache at the spike in pressure. “Fuuuuuuuuuck,” you groaned, but it only came out as an unintelligible groan.
Though your body shivered and your muscles ached, you still found bits to be thankful for. Your nose- while slightly pressurized- still let you breathe through it, and your throat had yet to feel any of its usual soreness; they were small victories, but victories nonetheless.
However, as time passed and you lay awake listening to the sounds of the tower you were beginning to get disoriented. Was it lack of sleep? Or maybe it was dehydration? Or perhaps…. Wait, what were you thinking of again? Hm… oh well, must not have been that important.
Anyways, where were we? Ah, right-
You waited patiently for Bucky to come back from the kitchen, now regretting asking him for tea instead of just asking him to lay with you. He had been so worried when he heard you say that you were sick that he immediately sprang into action. He knew you never really liked relying on people; you were always the one taking care of others- whether you wanted to or not- so when the two of you started dating it had been quite an adjustment to get you to sit back and let him do the work.
“Hey, Doll… Are you awake…?” He called quietly, nudging the door open with his foot as he carried a tray piled high. He made his way over toward the large lump underneath the blankets, dipping the bed as he sat, “Is this you or is this just a pile of pillows?” he asked with a poke.
“No, it’s me. I’m up…” you groaned as you peeked out over the warmth of the blanket to look, and when you saw you couldn’t help but laugh weakly at your ridiculously loving boyfriend. His tray was piled high with everything you could need; a nice bowl of soup, some fresh fruit, cold medicine, tea, a hot towel- he had brought everything he thought might help you.
“What’s all this..? I thought I only asked for tea…” you said with a nasally voice and a smile, braving the cold of the room as you sat up, “fuck, is it freezing in here to you…?” You pulled your knees to your chest in an effort to keep warm despite the way your aching muscles protested.
Bucky’s brows drew together as he set the tray aside, “I thought I’d make sure you had all you needed. You’re still cold…?” Concern laced his voice as his metal hand rubbed up and down your leg, “Can we try some soup first? You need to warm up from the inside.” he advised. Gentle, loving hands helped you sit up further, even going so far as to feed you spoonfuls of soup.
You snorted and rolled your eyes, but your smile betrayed just how much you loved it, “Bucky, I’m not a child. I can feed myself…” you argued, your smile dissolving into soft laughter as he began to fly the spoon around like an airplane at your remark.
“Ah, come on, Doll. Please let me take care of you…? ” he chuckled as he tried to play it off, but you could see in his eyes that he needed this, he needed to make sure you were going to be okay. Your heart squeezed pleasantly at the knowledge that you had someone so incredibly dedicated to you, and you nodded.
“Alright, Big guy...” you relented with a grin, downing the spoonful of soup, “Thank you… I don’t know what I’d do without you.” You swallowed with a hum, enjoying the way its warmth traveled through your body quickly.
You breathed a sigh of relief, closing your eyes and savoring the love and spices that went into it. However after your 5th or 6th spoonful your stomach began to turn, churning uncomfortably as you thought about taking another bite. “Ugh…” you groaned, holding Bucky’s hand still before he could offer you another spoonful, “Wait, hold on….”
“What is it? Is it not good?”He asked, “I tried to copy my mother’s old recipe but it’s a little fuzzy after 70 years on ice…” He looked down, sniffing the bowl quizzically, It didn’t smell perfectly like his mother’s, but it didn’t seem that bad either.
“No, no, it’s good… I just- I’m not sure my stomach is strong enough right now.” You sighed as you let go of his hand, looking away from the soup so your stomach could finally settle. “I’m sorry, I know you worked hard and -”
“Hey, no. Don’t be sorry,” he smiled softly as he put the bowl aside, “I know sickness does weird things to your appetite… but we need another way to warm you up now.”
You wasted no time pulling back the covers, your sweatshirt coming off in record time before you reached out to him, “Well, they say body heat is the best way to keep warm in emergency situations. It’s just science…” You reasoned as your fingers urged him toward you. You may have still been adjusting to having someone else care for you, but if there was one thing you’d cave to without fail, it was cuddling your super soldier.
“Ah, of course… and this is an emergency after all.” His grin spread warmth through you as he climbed in, peeling off a few of his own layers for maximum skin-to-skin contact.
You settled easily onto his chest, your head tucked neatly into the crook of his neck, and as you lay against his super-heated skin you felt your whole body melt away. Relaxation and warmth crept along your muscles as his warm calloused hand glided down your back, squeezing and rubbing your aching muscles as he went along.
“Wait, fuck- go back down… further… not there you pervert- up, now to the left…! Ooooooh, yeah. right there…” You moaned as he rubbed firmly into the small of your back.
A gentle laugh rumbled through his chest and into you, as you called him out, his hand turning to massage his knuckles along the perfect spot and eliciting an even dirtier-sounding moan from your lips.
“You jerk… Why are you so good at this..?” you sighed blissfully as your back cracked with a satisfying pop.
“What? At making you moan..?” your boyfriend teased, “Just had a lot of practice I guess… You know how dedicated I am to my craft,” He laughed as he kissed your shoulder’s warming skin, and snuck his hands lower…
You snorted, gently thwapping his arm… “Alright, big guy, behave yourself… I’m too sick for your kinda ‘cold remedy’ today “
A beaming grin spread across his face as he wrapped his arms firmly around your middle, his stubble rubbing against your face as he kissed your temple. “I’ll behave, I’ll behave..” he mumbled against your hairline, lips staying pressed against your soft skin.
A quiet moment passed where you two lay with nothing but comfortable silence between you. All kidding and jokes fell by the wayside as soft kisses passed beneath the blankets from body to body
A warm smile pulled at your lips as you closed your tired eyes, “Thank you for taking care of me today, Buck…. Always really. I can't imagine how miserable I’d be without you.” You laid your heart bare, appreciation evident in your voice. “I’m so lucky I have you,” you pressed another kiss to his stubbly skin, “I love you, Bucky.”
“I love you too, Doll. More than you’ll ever know.”

Versos de Placer (Colonel Carrillo x f!reader) - Thirteen (Part 2)
Tumblr media
Summary: The void.
Word count: 7.6k
Warnings: Bad words, violence, ~ daddy issues ~, smut, unprotected p in v sex, slight mentions of political conditions from the period, trauma, nightmares, people drinking alcohol, feelings and angst 🤷‍♀️
Author’s Note: I will admit that I am VERY lazy about editing long chapters, so I will always point out that there may be some spelling mistakes. Trust me, sometimes it’s tiring to think in Portuguese and write in English.
This had a very firm direction even before writing, so after a long time, I announce that this is our penultimate chapter. I'm very tired, as you already know, and multi-chapter stories take longer and require more energy, which I've been lacking in recent months.
Either way, it's been an amazing journey! I will be very sad to close, but happy to know that I did something that means something to me. See you in the last chapter!

----------------------------------
Hell, his cigarettes were always stronger. A combination of tough tobacco and intense nicotine, more natural but probably more dangerous. The box was nearly full, you noticed as you fished one out. Either he had recently bought it or he was being more resilient with his addiction - either of those things seemed unlikely. Feeling it now, as you inhaled the nicotine and hid a cough of surprise at the intense taste, you almost had the impression that being addicted to it seemed a lot harder than it looked.
You had sat on the back steps, but you made a point of leaving the door closed as it was before. The night was muggy, a little cruel if you were wearing more than a cotton t-shirt; it gave you an overwhelming feeling, as if you were sensing everything around you. You noticed that the garden had a particularly feminine feel to it — something that felt like Juliana, perhaps a very vivid reflection of what her presence in the house was like. Flowers, water fonts, the stone that certainly had a cool name that was used on the steps you were sitting on. You could feel comfort in the soles of your feet if you moved a little.
The weeds and chips in the beds looked more like Carrillo. You wouldn’t think he cared so much about making the place feel like a house, let alone whether to make the garden look like a garden.
“Why are you here?”
You didn’t have a proper answer. Given his manners, you could smoke in the room, could think about whatever kept you up that night by his window or in the comfort of his bed. Instead, you got there, far away, fingers brushing your jaw unconsciously and smoking a cigarette that wasn’t yours. Without something to say, you shrugged, not eyeing him but knowing he could find ways to get the answer somehow.
It was a pleasant surprise to see him walk down those steps, casually pull up a wooden chair that was there and sit down to face you. That made you smile discreetly.
“It’s awful, just so you know,” You gestured with the cigarette in your hand, contradicting yourself the next second while you took another hit.
“It’s not the best option for those who want to quit.”
“I just picked the wrong time for this. Or the wrong career.”
Carrillo didn't respond, but you could see him make that information something to mull over. You held his analytical gaze for a while; when it got intense enough, you took another drag and turned your face to the side.
“I didn't get them all,” The comment came after a long moment of silence, when you noticed that he didn’t make any effort to have one for him.
“Mm-hm,” He answered easily. “I figured you'd stop at the first one.”
“Yeah, well, this shit it’s fucked. You should review your preferences.”
“On cigarettes?”
“That too.”
This time he reacted, but in such an unusual way that it didn't seem like him. Horacio was drowsy, slow, as if the outside world had taken a break for that moment. Rested, by the saying. And when he decided to lean forward, reaching out a hand to pull the cigarette clamped between your fingers, you let him, watching the way he just took the time to put it in his own mouth before subtly grabbing your previously occupied hand. The same one that was still sore from the impact of the fall, but not so bad that it made you flinch from the touch. With the orange cigarette light illuminating his face, Carrillo carefully detailed the wounds, his thumb trailing lightly over your knuckles.
“Who told you?” The question slipped out of your mouth smoothly, but you felt anxious asking it. When he just frowned at you, you clarified. “About my… fall.”
He took his time taking the cig away, then took more time blowing the smoke away before saying something.
“Peña.”
Of course.
You tilted your head while you entertained yourself with the hold he had on your hand. Raising your eyes after a good moment, you saw him watching you.
You looked at each other for a moment. His fingers twitched in the grasp he had on your skin and whatever breeze that would come to brush you two wouldn’t make a single scratch at that moment. He looked so soft, so… open, like a vision of whatever type of man he was, a person you’d been meeting piece by piece. The warm eyes, the peaceful sincerity and the calm touches. God, he was so beautiful.
“Te extraño en mi cama.” I miss you in my bed. There wasn’t a teasing tone with the way he talked, but you could feel his intentions dripping from his voice.
Instead of giving him a proper answer, you chose — again — to keep any thought to yourself. With a slow hand, you grabbed the cigarette again, inhaling a little and releasing the smoke into the air without taking your eyes off him.
“¿Entonces viniste a buscarme?” So you came to get me?
Eyeing him from above, you could see the small smirk playing on his lips at the comment. You reflected the reaction, taking another drag before returning the cigarette. On this one, he pulled the touch away from your hand and directed it to the bare skin of your leg. Again, you didn’t make the effort to move or say something. Carrillo leaned in carefully, placing a single kiss on the inside of your left knee, then another on the right one. His body was angled enough that you could admire the curve of his broad back, the way the muscles stretched the fabric of his shirt.
“¿Qué estás haciendo?” What are you doing? You asked, a little breathless from the gentle kisses and touches, shivering like an untouched woman.
“Te quiero cerca de mi,” I want you close to me, He said against your skin, hand massaging your thighs. “¿Harías esto por mí?” Would you do this for me?
“Por supuesto, Horacio. No estaba huyendo.” Of course, Horacio. I wasn't running away.
“Yo sé que no. No irías muy lejos vestida así.” I know you weren’t. You wouldn't go far dressed like that. Carrillo straightened his stance, smiling playfully at you and letting a small ‘oof’ when you kicked him lightly on the leg.
You two got back to a comfortable silence, the tip of his fingers brushing your knees while you kept staring at the distance. The cigarette was still burning, making that strong smell of tobacco flow through the air calmly. It was peaceful, the way you sat there, silently, in each other's orbit. For a moment, you wanted to ask if he just lost sleep or if you had woken him up; maybe he wanted to ask something like that too. In the end, no one said anything, even though something should be done soon and you should move on from there.
“Quite dramatic, don’t you think?” You were the first one breaking the silence, still not eyeing him with a wave of embarrassment hitting you. “We’re almost there to get that motherfucker and I’m here whining because of my father.”
“You’re not whining.”
“You know what I mean.”
He knew and, from the inside, you also knew he agreed with your opinions. There was a lot going on, a war to win, people dying, but still your personal problems darkened your vision from the real problem. It made you understand why Carrillo was so averse to DEA or CIA - so many people looking at their own ass and not seeing the whole figure, the important part. Even then, you appreciated the effort, the way he just shook his head a little, took a drag, averted the topic.
You two contemplated the night in silence, puffing smoke and eventually brushing each other’s shins or legs or fingers. It was so easy to get used to the calm of that moment, to remember it as something eternal. You didn't want to think about the end of that because thinking about the end of that would, perhaps, be thinking about the end of what you had with Horacio there, at that moment. A mission that had to be accomplished, with the usual consequences. This was such a cruel melancholy, one that you only glimpsed as simple touches on your fingertips but that made your heart sink.
“Que pasa, mi amor?” What is it, my love? Carrillo asked, probably noticing the way you showed your sadness in your eyes, staring back at him.
“Nn-nn,” You shook your head. “I’m fine. Maybe I just wanna go to bed now.”
“We can do that.”
He didn't press, nor did he hesitate to put out his cigarette so the two of you could go back inside. When they did, Horacio locked the door but didn't let you go very far - he subtly held your hand, bringing you closer and kissing your bruised knuckles. Then, without taking his eyes off yours, he placed a sighing kiss on your forehead, in the middle of your eyebrows, on the bridge of your nose and, finally, on your lips.
“I don't think I ever told you how beautiful you are.”
“Horacio…”
“What? Don’t you believe me?”
“I’m already here, that’s all. You already have me, you don’t need to-” You knew exactly why you waved off his compliment, why you felt so unsure of how to react to it, and maybe he did too, because Carrillo wasn’t dumb. “Thank you. Sorry.”
You also didn’t know why your eyes welled with tears - either way, you suppressed the urge to cry, looking at him from under your lashes with shyness. With a discreet hand, you held his chest, then the side of his neck, tilting your head to the side and almost failing in keeping a neutral expression while observing his face. If you could, you would tell him that you were used to losing, that it wasn’t the first time your mind started to prepare you for another fall, another break. That Horacio, that this, wouldn’t be forever, that maybe you were just a storm in a life that could be calm.
Horacio deserved suitable days. Days where he could have kids, a wife to call his, sunday lunches with family and calm nights with a partner. You always doubted yourself so much, always put yourself in the harsh ways of life to just feel something, that suddenly you felt self conscious of the fact that you weren’t what he probably was looking for, that he wouldn’t change you or what happened or how messy the world was. You didn’t want it to end because it was good. Imprudent, maybe, and quite dangerous, but good. So good.
“What will become of us after this, Horacio? What do you expect of me?”
He blinked, frowning in a stern way.
“Is that what made you lose sleep?”
You nodded. The confirmation just made him sigh, shaking his head lightly and showing clear signs of frustration.
“He was never right about you. He doesn't… He doesn't deserve you, what he said doesn't belong to you,” Carrillo contained a harsh tone, jaw clenching. “I don’t expect anything, not from you, not from us, nothing but the assurance that you’re here now. That’s what I need.”
---------------------------------
It was different that time, you knew it was. Not like the first time, in the pure and mutual attraction, nor the second, in the decompression of the adversities that surrounded the two of you. It was different because, if Carrillo was crazy enough to ask you to marry him or propose an escape or make you stay there forever, you would say yes. Yes, Yes, Yes. Yes, take me away, yes, make me yours, yes, be the father of the children I never wanted to have but would have if you asked me. Yes, I would do anything for you.
But he didn't ask any of that. He hardly asked, in fact, because between ordering or teasing, as he always did with you, Horacio decided to give you things, fill you with dark truths in the way he kissed you and made love to you that night.
There was caution, care. He calmly undressed you, kissed you from heel to lip, caressed you through your physical wounds and those of your mind, holding you tight while he heard you moan and sigh. Sex for you was always a coincidence, an exaggerated consummation that was nothing more than pure biology. With him, that night, it was the end of a long and unnecessary waiting time that would always lead to the same result: the two of you together, skin to skin, without delay.
It was ridiculously cliché, looking into his eyes as you rode him slowly, as you enjoyed every moment with sweaty, panting faces, and knowing that the devotion of pleasure was the first and most genuine positive emotion you felt for each other. That there was no love at first sight, nor at second, nor at third, but a feeling that was based on the truth that, sometimes, the patches of difficult lives so full of ashes were enough for the right person. Ashes that became embers and fire again, with comfortable flames that warmed and did not burn. Not anymore, at least.
When it was all over, with both of you exhausted, tired and overwhelmed by the end, Horacio opened his first truly light smile, without intentions, just a happy one. He passed his hand over your forehead, looked at you without fear.
“Te amo.”
I love you.
---------------------------------
In the morning, despite having little sleep, you indulged more than you did at night in the shower. It was much less romantic, but equally intense, with skin-to-skin noises, loud moans, nail marks and very naughty looks. He took you from behind, one possessive hand on your neck and the other arm wrapped around your torso to balance his firm thrusts, while you grabbed his hips to keep him going.
One of your best mornings, indeed.
“I have a meeting before lunch. Then we have some alignments about the capture,” He said, all professional again, handing you a cup of coffee. You took it, smiling at the gesture while eyeing the correspondence from the day before that was stuck on your purse.
“The capture. Big word,” The teasing didn’t go unnoticed by him, but the term caused a small cloud of tension to hang in the air.
A letter from your mother. She said she loved you, asked for what the fuck was that magazines in your apartment and a date she had with the guy from the Blockbuster she mentioned two letters before. No details, thank God.
“What do you think?”
“About what?”
A call-up from Messina. Nothing important. That report she asked was probably on her desk by now.
“About this word.”
You stopped between an FBI report and another envelope. When you looked up, you saw him standing in front of you, leaning on the counter where you were sitting and sipping your own coffee. This made you consider a response, even if you already knew what you were going to say. With a sigh, you placed the envelopes back on the top of your bag and also took a sip of coffee, shrugging your shoulders.
“Last time he ran away.”
“Is that what you meant?”
“... No,” You shook your head lightly. “We know what will happen. Do you want me to say it?”
“You could try.”
But you didn’t. He knew, you knew, that was what mattered. Like ripping away a band-aid, or taking the life out of a queen bee - resolution, antidote, job done. You turned your face away from him, eyeing the letters splayed out there, and shook your head again.
“I don't want to put you into the operation. When the day comes, I mean.”
“I know,” A sip - a bitter one. “It’s okay.”
“Is it?”
“My name will already be in the history books, Carrillo. The DEA agent who fell from the rooftops the most in Medellín,” Even if it meant to be a teasing, Horacio didn’t smile, which made you roll your eyes. “I did the job, we all did. Whoever pulls the trigger, I’m happy. Satisfied.”
He didn’t respond to that, nor did he bring up the subject again, and you knew he understood what your passive words meant. You could be hiding something, maybe, but you weren't sure what it was. Your father may have been incapable of keeping words that promised good things, but he had uncanny abilities to carry out his threats well. He wouldn't touch Carrillo, he needed him, the aggression and the wounded pride that still coursed through the guy's veins. It would be one, two of the group. It would be someone.
You left the house giving him a long kiss, one that was returned with a certain innocence - which was an odd word to associate with him, anyway. Either way, you were determined to make the future farewell, the inevitable one, a little less full of secrets. You would say what really happened. You would do that, yes, different from what an unloving father would do after destroying his own family.
---------------------------------
“¿Qué pasó, hijo? Pareces distraído.” What happened, son? You seem distracted.
Jorge blinked a few times, looking back at the dishes in his hands and the foam, which was more sliding around his fists than actually cleaning anything in the sink. When he realized that he was, in fact, wandering in thought, he cleared his throat and tried to scrub the plate harder. He had done it before, but repeated the process unconsciously.
“Sólo estoy cansado, mamá. Fue un día largo en el hospital.” I'm just tired, mom. It was a long day at the hospital.
He hadn't said it in the letter - he didn't feel the strength or courage to do so. He didn't know how his mother would react. Georgina was a truly strong, competent woman, but Jorge's need to take a peek into the past was always something she ignored or just pretended didn't exist. If she imagined anything from her son's erratic behavior, the way he had become more agitated since the DEA had gotten its hands on the hunt for Escobar, she didn't comment. Another quality of hers, perhaps coming from experience, was knowing when to be quiet.
“No sé si voy a venir a cenar esta noche,” I don't know if I'm going to come to dinner tonight, Jorge said in a low, almost embarrassed tone, because he knew how much she didn’t like the idea. When he felt her coming closer, touching his shoulder calmly, he thought it was over and then, right there, all the secrecy would be over.
“¿De guardia en el hospital?” On duty at the hospital?
“Mm-hm.” He nodded, still watching the dishes, afraid of what he would find if his eyes landed on Georgina. She hummed, patting his back, then turning away.
“Ten cuidado en el camino. Por lo que parece, se están yendo.” Be careful on the way. From the looks of it, they’re leaving.
His hands clenched tightly at the mention of 'them', as did his eyes. Jorge always hated his sentimental side because it constantly failed him when necessary - since he was little, he would cry because he was away from his mother for a long time (who didn't give up brothel work even after having him) or he would get angry when another patient died due to lack of medicine in the hospital or he would even feel incredibly guilty when he saw the money that always came with men who were not from the government. That last part, he actually learned to overcome. If he was really determined like his grandmother always prophesied, he would never send that letter. You didn't owe him anything, you might not even have known he existed or, worse, followed not only in your father's footsteps in your career but in life.
Jorge left his mother's house afraid of being rejected again because it had been three days. Three days and nothing.
He wouldn't have another chance.
---------------------------------
That was the thing about being an almost lone woman on the front line: there was a subconscious idea that male colleagues had your back. Well, in general it was the other way around, and you wouldn't have been able to visualize any kind of support from anyone when you arrived, but perhaps your work might have earned you some respect - enough for people to look at you when you spoke and give value to what came out of your mouth. Maybe, if you had a little more stomach, you'd even ask Judy Moncada if she also earned respect through suffocation. Probably yes. Javier frowned a lot when her name came up (which was rare to see), so you could say that this would be an interesting point of identification.
It was the same Peña who mentioned that day he bumped into your father. He didn't specify a time, a specific moment, so it wasn't possible to know if it was before or after the episode in the office, just that it happened. You noticed that he kept looking at you with some suspicion, searching for an opening that would remove his doubt, but when you just said 'mm' and continued looking at the papers, the subject was dropped. There, you realized that it would be much easier to be punctual with your answers if he asked about Carrillo, but you knew he would hate to know too many details about it.
And oh yes, the 'protection'. You were never alone in a room with your father. When he prostrated himself more aggressively, sometimes Carrillo intervened with a firmer voice or Javier or Steve placed themselves, albeit discreetly, in front of you to shield yourself from that reaction. You always noticed, but never commented on it.
“He said that?”
The decision to tell Javier about what happened came in handy for a few basic reasons: he could be on the line (your father would always prefer a good, obedient boy next door like Steve), he knew how to keep secrets, and more than anything, there was a quiet trust that Carrillo wouldn't know about it from him. The two knew each other a little better, they had more identification, so Peña would understand why that conversation was taking place on the discreet terrace of your building between puffs of cigarettes.
“I just want to let you know. You know, in case something happens in the next few days.”
Javi frowned, nodding along but contemplating the information. You observed his side profile for a moment before turning your eyes to the night sky.
“Do you think it would be you?” When he asked that, you noticed that the question didn’t come with eye contact. His eyes were on the concrete, right where he tapped the ashes of his cig.
“I can’t be sure…” You sighed. “We're already in the final stretch, I'm sure of it. It wouldn't make any difference to let us go now. Still…”
Nothing came from your mouth. Javi pressed with raised eyebrows.
“CIA has its methods,” That was all you said and it could mean a lot of dramatic stuff, but at best he would just take some relevant parts from reports or even put on some obstacles in the near future. He would, indeed - he could.
“And don't you think your relationship with Carrillo is hurting your career?”
You two shared a glance, a long one. Javier didn’t seem to regret what he said, nor reticent; it was a question he wanted to do, so he did. And you considered it calmly, rolling the cigarette between your fingers without taking your eyes off him.
“What do you think?”
“... No,” He said, shaking his head. “It's harmless. At least from here. You?”
“It would be a bigger problem if it were you,” The teasing made him scoff.
“You wouldn't risk falling in love with me, at least. I wasn't going to let you do it.”
“Oh no?”
“Nn-nn.”
“Thank God, then.”
“Yeah, you should really be grateful. I still don't understand how you managed to get into his pants.”
“It's not that hard.”
“Mm.”
“You jealous or somethin’?” You raised an eyebrow. “I don’t think you’re his type at all, but-”
“Shut up,” He groaned, almost not being able to hide his playful grin while kicking your leg lightly. It turned into shared laughs soon, so you knew it would be another thing to remember.
A small silence lingered there, serene and soft. When he spoke again, it came in a low tone, tranquilized.
“If it's me-”
“Mm?”
“They're going to assign me to Cali. Well, I hope so.”
“You want that?”
“I don’t know what I would do, ‘s all. This… You know what I did here. It's a consequence that I would like to at least remedy, at least to sleep better at night.”
You observed him without a word to say, noticing that the privilege of having a slight reliable source of comfort for certain feelings was mutual. Well, you wished you could’ve noticed that earlier - it would’ve made a difference.
“Maybe I’ll need some support up there.”
“Is that an invitation?”
“Do you have plans after this?”
For a moment, for a slight small moment, you wanted to give him a definitive answer; that you would be on the field, that LA still has some hard work to do, that you wanted to stay. If you knew this, you would tell him for sure, because it was Javi and Javi was…
“Fuck, are you two that serious?”
You puffed more smoke in the air, one brow raised.
“I like him.”
Javier didn't respond, but there was a slightly bitter aura on his face, as if he had fallen into an unwanted situation. Well, it was. Just as it was undesirable to leave the US to hunt down a narco, or see innocent dead bodies every day, or start something like that with Carrillo at that point in things. Would there ever be an ideal time?
From the way Peña shared a glance with you, turning his eyes back to the street below you two, there was just one rational and coherent answer. Damn it all, you thought, because being irrational and incoherent seemed to work so fine with everything.
---------------------------------
You couldn't be very moved when Javier was sent away. You were furious, yes, because you could see in your father's eyes that day that it had been your defeat. No, it was a fact, you couldn't react in front of so many people, not even when you hugged him hidden in the parking lot.
“I’m sorry, Javi. I’m sorry.” You said, gripping the fabric of his jacket and keeping your eyes squeezed shut.
“It’s not your fault,” He said as calmly and coldly as he could, hands splayed on your back. “I caused this to myself.”
That sentence haunted you for a while, at least long enough. When Carrillo came to see you later, when you lay in bed together, no one mentioned what happened, even though it was a fact that no one there slept well (again).
“Pronto,” He said. “Pronto atraparemos a ese hijo de puta.” Soon. We'll soon catch this son of a bitch.
And you didn't know if Carrillo was talking about Escobar, your father or whatever the ghost was that surrounded it all.
---------------------------------
A breath you didn't know you were holding left your throat when you heard Trujillo come back on the radio saying that Escobar was dead. Your two hands were gripping the supports of the leather chair, your nails digging into the upholstery, your shoulders raised to your ears; you were alone in the room, locked and static. In the background, you could hear Steve, hear Carrillo and the men. There was a dead body, a definitive body, and it 'almost' made you cry.
You noticed a presence soon after and, when you looked up from the equipment, you saw your father. He had his arms crossed, his body leaning against the doorframe. You exchanged a withering look, full of many meaningless things.
“We-”
“No.”
For the first time, he didn’t answer, didn’t press. You blinked a few times, got even more closer to the desk and turned your eyes back to the radio.
“There will be no confirmation of CIA involvement.”
“Is that the most you can get?”
“I have nothing to apologize for.”
You nodded, expression unreadable, face never leaving the equipment.
“Apologizing is apologizing. I never painted you as a guy with a lot of metaphors and I don't think you would have the mental capacity to do that now.”
He didn’t say anything again. Not a word. When you looked at the door after a few minutes, he was gone - nothing but the empty corridor in your eyesight.
When it was all over, all done (when it finally looked like the end of the line), you didn’t feel all the emotions and joy and relief you always thought you would. There was a restraint, from the way people celebrated from the way you held yourself against the decision to run to Carrillo as soon as they all came back. You looked at the smiles and laughs from afar, observed the proud way Horacio was acting from finally (finally) making it to the final. To kill, to take that bug hurting his ego, his country and his integrity for so long. It all mattered to him and for that you could celebrate.
For some reason, even so, whatever weight you still carried on your shoulders, you flexed your hands so as not to touch Carrillo and carried his body slowly even though your heart screamed for you to run, to jump into his arms and give a relieved sigh, being able to say it was over. You walked closer, patted his bicep, gave one of the most genuine smiles you had, mouthed ‘we did it’ - his eyes were full of a deserved relief, like a good tiredness. Yeah, you wished you could keep that moment in a box, open it when necessary, keep it to memory. He was, really, a beautiful man.
And if you got away from the commotion and saw your father from afar, watching the scene like a hawk, making you lose your smile, it had nothing to do with the sudden sour mood that surrounded your head even during such a big event.
---------------------------------
“Peña called.”
“Mm?”
Carrillo hummed, the sound reverberating on his chest where you were laying on. The midnight breeze was cooler, mixed with your naked bodies fresh from the shower and the thin layer of the sheets, but you two weren’t shivering.
You brushed your palm on his pecks, nuzzling closer to his neck.
“Said he hoped we celebrated a lot.”
“We did, right?” The teasing on your tone made him chuckle, head turning to the side to peck your forehead.
“I think he should be a part of it somehow,” It didn’t sound like a confession, but more like a statement. Yes, he should, but he wasn’t. An empty space was there, one that nobody would be able to fix.
“... Yeah,” You said slowly, eyeing the window.
“Is that why you looked so lost earlier today?” He asked.
It was true that you didn't want to ruin the moment with what was going on in your head, much less bring another type of bureaucracy to the ones he would face with Escobar's death, but you always thought you could be one step ahead of Carrillo when it came to hiding your true emotions. He had an almost religious ability to read people.
“No,” You shook your head. “But I would rather not talk about it.”
And he didn’t. Horacio went all quiet and kept tracing patterns on your shoulder and arm, all the while giving long and steady breaths, as if entering in a state of relaxation that you’d never seen before. Another thing to keep close to your heart, the way you could feel the slump of his shoulders, his soft heartbeat, the delicate touch of the tip of his fingers - things that he didn’t allow himself to be, a version of himself that flowed in the air, an almost domestic man.
Domestic, yes, so you adjusted your body to be even more closer, touching his skin and kissing what you could reach, what could still be surrounding you. It scared you a little, the fact that if he decided to be done like before, to create some distance between you two, you would be almost sick, sad, unsure of what to do with your hands and mind. Well, the offer would be up. You could still be closer for a little more, work with Peña if he ever got the chance to work on the Cali, to be some hours away from this thing you started to truly appreciate with Carrillo.
But again, hell, again, you wondered if that would always be like this. Could you two only be together in a context of war, of conflict? Wasn't there a version of that closeness that could be solidified in the silence and peace of a stable relationship? How unfair would that be, stopping the world for a moment and being able to sleep with someone you love without a gun under your pillow or the uncertainty of even being alive at the end of the day?
You felt selfish. Horacio could’ve died at the hands of the narcos, he always had an almost obsessive ambition to have that man in his hands, defeated and destroyed. It was enough that he was there, with you, and not in some tomb with honorable mentions made for Juliana, and not for you, because you were nothing more than two colleagues to people. You even felt self conscious. There would be less uncertainty if Juliana was there instead of you because she stopped her life so that Horacio could climb his own, achieve things, be the provider.
You remembered the night right after he was shot.
“I came to see you the day you got shot,” It slipped out of your mouth, breaking the silence in a sharp way even if your voice was small.
“You did?” He asked, confused by the sudden change of subject but willing to engage. “Why didn't I know this before?”
“... I saw Juliana in your house.”
Another silence followed your comment, this time more rigid. You couldn’t bring yourself to look at him, focusing your eyes on the skin of his belly, but that comfort lasted so little when he squirmed, almost forcing you to move away enough to look at his face. With a gulp, you did, body supported by one of your elbows to see his concerned face.
“It bothered you,” Horacio said.
“No, it’s just… You two were married, Horacio, for fucks sake… And it was obvious that she would come by to see how you’re doing. I didn’t want to interrupt. Not to mention that we weren’t as we are now.”
He stared at you, still frowning. After a while, when he noticed that you weren't going to say anything else, he relaxed his face a little, looking at the window and collecting his own thoughts.
“I tried to rekindle our relationship. Deep down, I thought I needed stability in life, something that made sense and that I didn't need to worry about, so the divorce was a frustration,” A sigh. “But that was before Escobar, before all that. I realized it would be better this way when we went to Madrid. She returned to be with her family, but we signed the divorce with the certainty that it was the right thing to do.”
You listened to his words with attention.
“When I got shot, I didn't think about anything. There was no film of my life or missed chances and opportunities. If I died right then, my only regret would be that I didn't finish my work,” He turned to you then, measuring your face with care. “When Juliana showed up, the only thing she told me was that I shouldn't be miserable enough to only have this mission in my head. That I should progress, live. No one would wait for me forever at the finish line and it would be a horrible feeling to swim for so long only to die alone on the beach.”
That was like a punch in the stomach, a force of words of things that only squeezed your heart. The fear and insecurity of being alone, of all that ending, you returning to LA and having all these feelings, added to the guilt of not valuing what your mother, for example, offered. This loneliness at the end of the day, of modified dreams and a brutal reality, this was something you thought about with yourself and didn't imagine that someone else would feel it too.
“That's when I thought of you.”
You gulped, mouth twisting to prevent a smile.
“You and your perfume. It was always a femininity that I repudiated, particularly because it broke with my focus, took me off the axis, off my plan. After that I realized that getting rid of Escobar was an incredible feeling and going back to that same perfume was just as good.”
No one spoke of goodbyes, of a goodbye that would be seen occasionally and almost instantly. You did it, you accomplished your mission. And if what was left, even if only for a short time, was that sensitive moment of implied declarations and a true sense of love, then so be it.
This ending wasn't that bad.
---------------------------------
“You’re really trying to make this a competition, huh?”
You couldn’t help but smile at his teasing tone, turning your head for a peck on the lips before going back to the search on your bag. It was still early in the morning, so after a good fight around your kitchen to do a cup of coffee before he woke up, you decided to smoke some - just to notice that you couldn’t find your pack of cigarettes.
Carrillo circled his arms around your waist from behind, making you tilt your head to give room for him to place small and deliberate kisses on your neck. When he started to lower his hand, brushing the inside of your left thigh, you couldn’t help but chuckle. Noticing that you still weren't giving him your undivided attention, Horacio grunted and suddenly grabbed your purse, throwing it haphazardly on the sofa and suppressing your surprised gasp by turning you towards him and kissing your mouth.
“What’s going on?” You asked, unsure if you should laugh, push him away lightly or just give in on his affections.
“Nn-nn,” He mumbled, burying his face on your neck again.
“Nn-nn?”
“Just five more minutes.”
And he wasn't agitated, nor witty enough to make that moment a heap of giggles or tickles or… Anyway. He remained quiet, breathing deeply, placing both palms on your back and pressing you against his body. You frowned at the silence, at the request, until you felt his heart racing in his chest, his skin sweaty. Perhaps you had heard a commotion in the room, something that indicated the reason for that almost unexpected attitude. Horacio was rigid, almost restless in a… different way, burying his fingers on your back.
“Was it a nightmare?” You asked in a low tone.
“Bad dream.”
Well, you could say it was the same thing, but Carrillo probably had odd ways to cope with this shit, like not saying it was a nightmare would make it less scary. It was early - way too early for either of you to be up. It was as if the calm was fighting against the hustle and bustle of the outside world and what was happening. A reminder. You could tell he felt what you had felt the day before, at least because you knew there would be a small sacrifice at the end of it all.
You hugged him back, closed your eyes at the proximity. No one said anything, you particularly couldn’t. If you did, you would have to admit that, yeah, you knew how it was to have bad dreams - that yours involved saying a difficult goodbye, saying that you two would be over.
Yeah, this ending wasn't that bad, but it hurted a little; if felt like a fucking sacrifice.
---------------------------------
You both had busy days with bureaucracy. There was a lot of paperwork, press conferences, arrests and transfers. The Montoya family wrote to you, Peña wrote (although he was more succinct). When your mother wrote, asking (among other things) when you would return, you answered all her other questions except that one. Steve and Connie invited you to dinner as a farewell and they, yes, had a date to leave, to bury complicated days.
Your apartment was a mess because of it; clothes on the floor, work things scattered around. Some people in the office already had tickets booked to the US, so whenever you came back late at night or in the early hours of the day, there would be someone walking by with boxes, smiling in relief. You just stayed quiet. At dinner, at bureaucracies, at the times you managed to meet Carrillo.
Something was missing. You didn't feel truly fulfilled, you didn't find the strength to respond to your father's criticism or anything that came out of his mouth. It was an inertia of confusion, uncertainty and emptiness.
Horacio was in your apartment when it happened.
The two of you had sat on the couch, smoked, drank, had sex. The usual.
You remembered him getting up to get the bottle of bourbon that was left in the kitchen and you said you would accept another drink. Then you squirmed on the couch, rested your head to face the ceiling and rubbed your eyes, already partially drunk. When you turned your head to the side, hearing Carrillo mumble something about the bottle already running out, you saw a piece of paper pointing out from under the couch.
Any other time, really, you would leave it there. God, why did you take that shit in the first place? Why didn't Horacio arrive seconds earlier to distract you from opening that letter?
Jorge Pérez. With a high level of importance.
It was dated a few days earlier and had been written on pages in a small notebook, with spaced words and letters, all written in typical Colombian Spanish that was mixed in quick, light, hurried writing.
The last time you felt that feeling of having disassociated like that was when Juan Marcos almost killed you. Your head felt light, removed from reality, and it was as if your hands were tingling. You didn't laugh this time, you didn't have a hysterical laughing reaction from the shock, because maybe your body was so exhausted that you could only react with the first thing you felt like doing.
Each word was taken in with a lump in your throat and you blinked a few times as you felt your hands shaking, holding the papers and couldn't finish reading the rest. There were three parts, three pieces. You were suddenly impulsive about finishing the rest, reading, turning over the papers, gripping them tightly between your fingers.
“What?”
He asked with a confused expression, but you couldn’t quite catch his question right away. With a hand in front of your mouth, you swallowed a sob and held that letter with a firm grip, afraid of it all being a lie or an illusion or… A trick. A fucking universe trick for your mind and soul.
You raised your eyes to Carrillo, gulping again to prevent any big emotion from spreading all over the place.
“... It’s… It’s Jorge.”
“And who is it?”
The words almost didn’t leave your mouth, as if you were scared of the consequences of just… saying it.
“My brother.”
---------------------------------
I saw him on TV, but I saw you on a very trivial day. I don't remember the clothes you were wearing, nor could I tell you what time it was, or what day specifically. Maybe it was right after I saw him, but I still wouldn't know for sure. Things always pass me by with dates and names. I'm dyslexic. The truth is, well, you have a dyslexic brother who is a doctor. This is a great treat for those who enjoy stories of overcoming.
He never talked about me, did he? I'm sure he didn't do that. I think you're smart, maybe witty, because he never talked about you to me either. Perhaps we both did something that would be worthy of making him pull away. This is strangely comforting.
I know that the moment is not convenient and that it may seem like a lie, like a trap or something, so I understand if it takes a while, despite admitting that I am an anxious guy, I would even say impulsive. The truth is that not having an answer from you makes me resigned, but if you responded, if you looked for me, I would be hopeful.
Be sure to stop by a bar in Belén called Bodega del Toro. They have great fish filets and craft beers that are always cold.
Show up. Go to the bar if you can.
He won't show up, you can be sure. This stopped being a reality a long time ago. I hope it also brought out, in addition to your appearance, the generosity that I'm sure your mother has.

”Magic and Desserts”
lyney x f!reader
chapter 2
Author’s note: This chapter got very delayed for which I am very sorry. A lot of things have happened in my personal life and some technical problems popped up in the process of editing the second part. Also just started working on the 3rd chapter!
word count: 2.2k
“‘Lyney, the..’ no way.. THAT WAS LYNEY ‘THE’ MAGICIAN??” you try to keep your voice down but the surprises just keep coming. Your brother hanging his had in disappointment but still smiling. “You are a lost cause. How can you forget his face?” he asks, looking at you under his brows. “I have only seen him ONCE. But he DID look familiar.” you taunted yourself with the image of his face while getting the coffees on the serving tray. “He invited me to go and see their show this Saturday. Can I go?” you asked quietly. “Well, their shows are a big deal and a lot of people will most likely be there to watch it. Hm, it’s too early to say, let’s wait some more, okay?” his ‘deep-in-thought’ face was on display, turning around so he can see the customers. “Okay.”
Thru the remaining week, your mind was occupied with the show and it’s needless to say your spacing out caused you some burns here and there while making new desserts. It was obvious to, your older brother, Arouet that you wanted to go and what else would he do besides leg you go and watch it. Once again, it’s needless to say your face lit up. The only thing he did is ask for your instructions of how to serve your sweets to the customers. “And there should always be a flower on the right side facing you, remember?” you were teaching you older brother the right way to decorate them with  dry edible flowers. “Is it that important?” he asked a bit confused with a sweat drop on his left cheek. “Well, the presentation is very important. It makes the customer more intrigued and-“ “Yea, yea I get it, it’s all manipulation of the mind and blah blah blah. Oh, look at the time, shouldn’t you be waiting for the Aqua bus already?” he cut you off and looked down at his watch. “Ah, you are right! Don’t forget how to tuck in the napkins!” you remind after taking your basked beside the inside counter and coat from the installed hanger near the door. “I won’t, now sho!” he yelled at you while crossing his arms and smiling warmly.
As Lyney peaked out behind the red velvety curtains to spy on his audience he noticed your place was still empty. A little sigh escaped his lips, but the show had to start soon and even if he wanted to - he couldn’t wait for you to show up much longer.
“Greetings, ladies and gentleman! This evening we are here to appreciate the great show that Lynye and Lynette have prepared for us!” the showman introduced the young twins and the curtains were going upstairs. Him and his sister were holding their arms together up in the air, chests puffed out and hands holding together in a lock. People were cheering and clapping loudly getting up from their seat, impatient as to what was awaiting them! And just then, in the middle of that chaos, your figure appeared on top of the staircase that was too, covered in a red coloured carpet. Even if nobody noticed, his eyes softened with relief. As you walked down, you were also looking around to find your seat. It was just right next to the steps. Quite convenient as you needn’t go through people’s seats and bother them with going right in-front of their view.
“Thank you, thank you! It’s our pleasure to have such pleasant people here to watch our magic show!” the audience died down now seated and waiting for what Lynye has to say. “I am sure you all know that a magician’s most recognisable feature is his hat.” he says, lifting his own hat up from his head “So I could like to start with showing you what a magician can fit..” he pats it on it’s bottom in attempt to make something fall from it “..into this tiny space. But first, so you can believe the reality of all this I will be needing an assistant that will be one of you” kids and adults started waving their hands and yell ‘Me! Me!’ to signal him that they wanted to participate. Lyney mimicked a ‘thinking hard’ face with his hand on his chin, squinted eyes and a pout, walking in circles around the stage. “Hmmmm, who should I choose? All of you look like worthy candidates!” he said thoughtfully and then his eyes landed on you, who was quietly sat. “Ah, why such a young lady not raising her hand! Aren’t you exited?” the magician questioned. Now all eyes of the auditorium were on you. “What do you all say, why don’t we show this young lady what a magic show is about?” he turned to the rest of the audience. Screams of excitement started to echo between the wall of Opera Epiclese, hyping you to go and take part in the show. You were nervous, but thought it could be rude to you refused so you got up from your seat and started making your way to the podium. “Everybody, please, let’s encourage her with applause!” and clap sounds filled the air. All of this made you more nervous and just as you started to walk up the stairs you tripped on the next step. Blush from embarrassment appearing on your cheeks, Lyney crouched down as to make sure you didn’t hit yourself, lending you a hand. “Now, now! We don’t want for you to get hurt!” he smiled softly, looking up, you grabbed his hand and he helped you up. “Why don’t you introduce yourself?” he smiles at you, leading you to the centre of the podium “My name is [name].” you say quietly, smiling and facing him. “Alright [name], hold my hat.” he hands you his hat “Now look inside. Tell us, do you see anything inside?” you looked inside and it was empty “There is nothing in here.”. In the crowd there were people saying ‘Show us!’ so they were sure you weren’t lying. “Now Miss [name], show it to the audience so they can make sure too.” as he instructed you clasped it on the bottom and started to show the crowd turning it from the left to right and back to left. “Was there anything?” he asks again and everyone yells out a ‘NO!’ “Heh, sounds like I can show you the first trick then! Please hold the hat upside down.” you do as you are told. While you and everyone else were waiting he somehow managed to summon a magic wand in this hand by simply shaking it, he then bends down a little bit and gently did circles around the hat’s hole with it. “Hmm what were the magic words again?” he hums out, hand rubbing his chin, looking like he was in deep thought. Everyone started to laugh at his word, you cracked up a bit and laughed out loud too. “Shouldn’t a magician practice his magic before a show?” you ask him lightheartedly, still smiling, to which he responds with “Oh I did so many times but your beauty suddenly made me forget every single magic trick I know!” he winks a bit and cocks his head on the side. You blushed, wide eyed, not expecting this response.
While you were in shock he loudly remarked “Hmmm, ah yes! Alta Vola!” and suddenly 7 white doves flew out of his hat. One of them accidentally hit you with it’s wing on your face, which caused you to drop the hat to hold where the dove had hit you. When his cylinder hat hit the floor a rabbit came crawling out of it! Lynette started to run after it to catch the fluffy animal. The whole audience started to laugh not expecting this to happen. “Oh no, Miss [name], are you alright? Here have a napkin!” he theatrically said and started to go thru his pockets, all of a sudden, he started to pull out a tin rope from one of them. One, two, tree pulls and still no napkin was found but only rope came out. “Uhh, could you mind to help me?” Lyney looked at you with a pleading look on his face, “Of course.” you took the rope in one hand and still held your face with the other. You tugged on it as he started to walk backwards. Then the rope has finally come out completely, there was something tied on it. He picked it up, untied it and neatly showed it to the audience. It was a napkin and on it was his face with the tongue out. Laughter erupted again in the air, even you’ve forgot about the hit that dove have you. He then folded it, clasped your hand and put it in yours “Here. Take it as a gift, no need to bring it back to me.” Lyney smiled sweetly, it almost made you blush from his gentle touch on your hand. “You may now take your seat, thank you for participating in these tricks!”
After the magic show you were waiting for a meet up for them. It took them a while to showed up. “Hey, Lynette ‘n’ Lyney!” you greeted, happily and a bit nervous to see them face to face. “I am sorry if I caused you some trouble during them show.” you clutched your basket’s handle. “Don’t worry, there was nothing wrong you did.” Lynette reassured, “If anything, I think you made the show even better! I just hope the dove didn’t hit you in your eye, did it do so?” worry could be heard in her brother’s voice. “Ah, no it didn’t hit me in the eye, just below it.” you even pointed where exactly and if they looked really hard there would be seen a little red spot. Now trying to gather some courage to keep the conversation going you started to play with the handle of your basket. “And also..” putting it down on the table, you started to rummage thru it and held out to them two things in your palms “I have made you some desserts. It’s Lynette’s favourite type of mousse, but I hope you like it too, Lyney.” you handed it to them carefully and with a little awkward smile. “Thank you, [name].” Lynette said now fascinated by your thoughtfulness and carefully observing the dessert. “Oh, [name], thank you! You shouldn’t have, really.” Lyney looked surprised at your gift, not really expecting it. “Maybe I shouldn’t have but I couldn’t help myself. I really hope you like it.” you said, embarrassed a little if it was really uncalled for to bring them dessert. Now it will be even more embarrassing to ask them to return the complex design, crystal-glass, dessert bowls whenever they could. But as per always, the male twin observed them and asked you right after “These bowls look very beautiful. I suppose you use them at the caffe?”. Honestly his sharpness made you question if he read your mind but answer the question “Yes I did them yesterday after we closed. We rarely use them and I decided that it would be nice to put them at use.” gentle smile appeared on your face thinking of it. Lynette, while the two of you were talking, actually have already started her mousse (she pulled out a little spoon she always carries around for special occasions like this one) and enjoying it quite a lot as she listed to you.
Some time has gone by. You and Lyney were talking about different topics and simply didn’t notice how late it have gotten. During one of your sentences, you happened to yawn and when your eyes were finally not looking at him, you noticed how the sky got dark blue. Your stunned expression shifted to one of worry really fast after realising you might have missed your Aqua Bus. Lyney noticed that but before he could speak, you were looking at your pocket watch “Oh no, I am going to miss the Aqua Bus!”. In panic, you jumped up all of a sudden, looking around to gather your things. Lyney also arose from his seat, looking around to help you with something but you were ready and started to run towards the big doors at the Opera Epicles. Already out and about to get on the bus, Lyney shouted for you from the entrance of the Opera “[name]!”. Your head snapped back and looked at him, his gaze now was softer “Thank you for today.”. His warm smile made you calm down. “Today was wonderful..” you said, smiling widely, now that you recall everything from today. Quickly, you began to climb up the stairs of the Aqua bus. The boy stared at you, as if he was in a trance. The bus started to move and you looked back to check if he was still there and surely he just stood there. You raised your hand to wave him goodbye, the force of the wind behind you, making your hair gently fly around. Lyney raised his and waved back. He stood there, his arm slowly falling down to rest. Lynette was standing far behind him and observed everything, but now she was slowly making her way to her brother. Standing on his left she eyed him to see his expression. Just as she expected- he was blushing, eyes big and lips slightly parted. A little huff left her and after a second she spoke “You are a lost cause.”

Fanfic.net dosnt let me reply any more??? but I do try to. even if its just a key smash and a thankyou. or if its an emoji spam i emoji spam back. I love those.
6. What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Hm. The closest ones I could think of are Death's acquaintance and In grief we bake. I don't tend to do agnsty endings. even the sad ish ones are kind hopeful.
EDIT: JABBERYJAYED! I forgot!? litreally a hunger games fic ends up in devistation?? fool.
7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I couldnt narrow it down so top 2: I saw 7 Dogs and Christmas Cards
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Onlya few times in the past. two of those times were Worst witch ship trolls and just deleted them. one was my fault, i got uppity with an 'UPDATE NOW' comment and user just went a few my other fics being rude. againn deleted.
9. Do you write smut?
write yes. post no. (not yet-!) :o
10. Do you write crossovers?

Not that I know of
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

No but I would count @teapotteringabout @kiwi-collideoscope and Princess Sammi as , the amount i've bouced ideas about with them.
14. What's your all-time favourite ship?
Mary Poppins and Bert. the OTP before i knew what the internet was.
15. What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
Froot, SEASICK and Cherrytree Carol. plus a bunch of WW ones. I keep picking them up but i feel like they might be left on the shelf a little longer.
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue and character voices. I also love mixing humour in too, even just a little sprinkle into sad bits and I think i do that quite well.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Plot bunnies. and not finishing current WIPS. Ive made a mountain of improvement on that frount but yeah posting chapters before before the fics even 50% done. To the point ive sequeals to fics that are only two lines of an epic.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
Massivise kudos who can do that. not my forte. The closest I've come is writing the odd burst of ASL and BSL for Unshackled and Chest Compressions, and a pinch of welsh for Lucretia’s Baller but as yet Hypothetical Birthday Cake.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Corpse Bride (2005). a sad little fic for a le sad victor van dort.
20. Favourite fic you've ever written?
Ever? Probably have to Mildred's Montorus adventures. but Your mother and Mine's got a special place in my heartjust cos family and the catharisis .
Thank you!!

Euden's Surprising Spread of Spidey Senses
So this is another of the 'things I noticed a while ago but am now properly committing to text so I don't forget everything'. Anyways, I found it funny the more I looked that Euden seemed to have a wing of general senses/ability to discern things/feelings or reactions that nobody else had, and sometimes he thought he was completely normal when they really weren't.
The earliest example I can think of offhand is chapter 13, wherein he feels drawn to the whatever ominous mana stuff that gives Ranzal the heeby jeebies.
Tumblr media
Yes Euden I wonder why you're attracted to artificial mana that may be corrupted by black mana
As my friend joked in this scene, he's the one kid in a tv show that has to be stopped from licking whatever clearly bad object everyone else has the good sense to not touch (even if in this case, he'd be perfectly fine if the main reason it is 'dangerous' is because of black mana, being immune. Not that they knew that because since everyone hightails it as soon as it starts getting too thick so they have no idea he's not susceptible, but I digress).
Then, there's his ability as I jokingly refer to as the ability to sample and dissect dragon roars/behavior like fine wine:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nothing like being able to tell if a dragon is hurting or sane as well as their mood based on their roars. And it's not exactly a set science or habit that can be learned with all the noises the very-varied-in-form Dragalia dragons make. I think he does this at least once or twice more, but I could be wrong.
Regardless, imagine Euden and Bahamut having a conversation where Bahamut does his standard Variations On A Roar performance and Euden's just like, 'hm, interesting. that does sound tasty'. And everyone is very confused how he got that from ROOOOAAAARR.
Then there's his sensitivities regarding other things, like his ability to tell when someone is about to shapeshift.
Tumblr media
This is where he also tries to turn to his siblings to go, 'hey this is normal, right guys??' only to be flatly rejected.
Tumblr media
Granted, they more suggest experience might be the cause of his talent here, but since it's ultimately speculation and up in the air and explicitly something everyone else finds weird I elected to include it. Regardless if it's natural or supernaturally developed, it's a sense nobody else has.
Even Nedrick realizes quickly that Euden's just Weird and hypersensitive to dragon-mana stuff and decided to formulate a plan around that and extend a bit of trust to his ability. Which, for Nedrick, Mr.Never Trust Anyone Ever To Do What I Need Done, is a testament to just how weird and valuable he finds the skill.
Tumblr media
He later goes on to use his understanding of dragons and pacts to split up the power concentrated under Elysium back to their proper owners, the individual Greatwyrms.
Then, of course, is the built-in 'GPS return to sender' he has when it comes to Xenos' location and status. Quite handy he had that, or else we would immediately have gotten Dragalia 2: Electric Boogaloo wherein everyone collectively realizes Xenos isn't dead and has to assemble the gang again x years into the future. (Actually maybe it'd be better if he didn't so we could've gotten another Dragalia-)
Tumblr media
Ahem. Anyways, this is getting long, so I'll cut it off there, but the fact that Euden was weird compared even to his family is just a thing that is passively baked into canon. And this isn't even counting his behavioral oddities that constantly leave others going ??? regarding him all the time, just his sensory ones!
And I like those little kinds of oddities very much.
Long story short regarding Euden:
Tumblr media
Bonus round on editing:
Oh yeah, he also has a Find a Friend working ability that allowed him to track down and hear his friends across pocket dimensions. Even Mids, who has supernatural senses of his own in being able to derive 'true location', can't hear across worlds. Perhaps it's a good thing Euden didn't make too many otherwordly friends. Imagine constantly hearing friends speaking that aren't even in the same area or time of existence as you are (like Luca did that one time in the comics).
Tumblr media
Also, it's a bit funny that even if it's a power innate to him he's still addressing it as if it's completely separate from him and asking 'it' nicely to open up portals. Nothing like Euden being unable to do something himself, but because he's asking 'himself' nicely suddenly finds the willpower to make manifest what he wants.
...Imagine if it applied to food. 'Please mysterious power my friends and I are starving, can we have some food?' and a luxury turkey dinner just pops in front of them, what he was secretly wanting and is like 'wow what a coincidence, exactly what sounded heavenly to me personally. Thanks mysterious power!'

Summary: Love drives some people crazy and some can't stand to go without. You thought you'd found the perfect boyfriend in Diavolo, one who loved you more than anything else in the world. And, well, you weren't exactly wrong, but it turns out that he's one of the ones that can't go without…
A/N: Fucking hell! I had to do so many edits because I rearranged some chapters and switched where two major events happened.
Word Count: 1901
Tumblr media
“My Love?” Diavolo called softly through the haze of your mind as if standing somewhere so much further away. Unfortunately for you, he was unbearably close; holding onto you as if you were precious.
You turned your head to him without actually focusing your gaze. At this point, through the sickness and jumbled thoughts in your mind, you couldn't be bothered to scream, cry, or fake a smile. Everything just felt so heavy. You weren’t sure you could even lift a teacup like you had yesterday during that forced ‘date’.
“Hm?” You hummed weakly, wondering where all the grit and tenacity inside of you had gone recently. Sure you were sick, but it was as if all the energy you had faded all at once and was nowhere near returning.
"My Love, you need to get ready. We have a surprise guest."
A… guest? As in someone besides him and Barbatos? And he was going to let you out of the room to see them? Did you, through your addled mind, dare to have hope?
"This will be uncomfortable, but bare with me."
He undid the bindings that always kept you attached to the bed only to tie your arms and legs together so you couldn't move any of your limbs. He picked you up bridal style.
"Close your eyes," he whispered with a smile across his face, as if he was excitedly waiting to show you something for your birthday.
When you didn't do it immediately, he frowned. "Would it be easier to blind you?"
That barely veiled threat was enough for you to close your eyes as he ordered.
"Good. Oh! No peeking or I really will have to blind you to eliminate that temptation," he said far too cheerfully.
You could feel the jolt from his sudden movement as he began walking. The sound of the door opening felt so foreign, as well as all the twists and turns he made. In the back of your mind, you tried to remember how many times he turned left and right, making a map of where you were in the palace behind your eyelids. Every set of stairs and even the changing sound of his footsteps was a clue you added to your inner map key. It was crude at best, but it was something. It was a possibility.
He finally stopped.
"You can open your eyes if you want."
As you did, light flooded your vision. When your vision adjusted though, you recognized the drawing room. You also recognized the chair he was standing in front of, although the seat was raised to reveal a small space inside.
"It's important we both greet our guest, although you may be uncomfortable. Forgive me for that." He kissed your temple.
“Just stay here like a good little human and try not to make too much noise.” Diavolo’s voice sounded so sweet as he spoke, but there was a clear threat behind his words. Or, perhaps everything he said sounded like a threat now.
You whimpered as he closed the lid over you, surrounding you in darkness in a very uncomfortable position. You were slumped over to fit into the small space, your head drooping down against your knees so all you could do was stare at the wood beneath you. You weren’t even able to adjust into a more comfortable position, since the bindings that dug into your skin wrapped their way around your calves, up your thighs, to your torso, and kept your arms in place. You hadn’t even been here for a full minute and you were already in pain. At least you could lie down comfortably in the stupid room.
In this place, all you could do was wait in the pitch-black darkness for something to happen. In some futile attempt to relieve your boredom, you actually started to count your fingers over and over again. It was something at the very least, even though you lost track at some point in the thousands and had to start over. Even mistakes were more interesting than nothingness.
“-very concerning.” You finally heard a faint voice through the walls around you. It’s very familiar, but you know that it isn’t Diavolo’s.
“I see. That is troubling.” That was Diavolo.
“Are you sure they haven’t reached out to you?” That voice really was familiar, but it was hard to make out properly through the walls around you, “Even an attempt would be sufficient.”
“They haven’t contacted me since our last conversation, and that was nearly a month ago.” Something shifted over you, like a great weight was just placed on top of you, “Please, take a seat.”
“I apologize, Lord Diavolo, but I only stopped by to see if you’d heard from them. I do not have time for tea today.” Lucifer! That’s who the voice belonged to.
"Don't be in such a rush. Barbatos, prepare something for Lucifer's nerves. He needs to relax."
Barbatos said something that sounded like agreement, but you couldn't quite make out the exact words.
"I apologize. We've all been concerned lately and I'm letting it show more than I should."
“No one is blaming you for being worried about them, I doubt you have anything to be worried about. If they wanted or needed your help, I’m sure they’d summon you.” There was a loud thump against the outer walls of the box you were inside of, and you could only assume Diavolo kicked it.
“We think they did. Or rather, we believe Belphie,” hearing that name made you feel like you were going to puke, “was summoned but we haven’t heard from him either...”
“Oh? Why do you think he was summoned?”
“He vanished suddenly without a word. Such an abrupt departure most likely means he was called on.”
"Belphegor is a strong demon. If he gets into any danger, I'm sure he can handle himself."
Liar!
You wanted to scream, to shout, to curse him out, but stayed silent because of Lucifer.
Salvation was right there. You knew Lucifer would help you if you asked him to, but you also knew that Diavolo wouldn't allow it. Images of Belphie's lifeless body flashed in your mind, his blood soaking into the floor and the crushing of his vertebrae abruptly cracking echoing in your ears.
You couldn't risk that happening to Lucifer too. You'd already taken the youngest sibling from his family; you couldn't take the oldest one too.
"We're going to look for them – thank you, Barbatos," Lucifer suddenly said. "I understand if you can't join us, but-"
"What kind of partner would I be if I didn't look for them?" The seat above you creaked as he shifted his weight. "Barbatos can handle everything while I'm gone. Right?"
"Please finish your paperwork before you go."
Diavolo whined. "Isn't this more important though?"
"Are you planning to leave immediately, Lucifer?" Barbatos asked.
"We're preparing today and tomorrow then leaving the next day."
"Then there is time to do what you need."
Diavolo whined louder. "I suppose. Although I should prepare too…"
"I would advise seeing Lucifer out then."
"Of course. Thank you for your time."
The weight on top of you shifted again, but this time it was in a way that relieved the pressure above you.
"I wish we were meeting under better circumstances like old times. Still, I'm glad you are all looking for them since I'm so preoccupi-" Diavolo's voice faded into the distance and you were alone again.
Your heart hammered in your throat, your limbs were numb and tired, your skin felt like it was burning up. Everything inside of you felt wrong. Screaming at you to say something before they left, but your logic kept your mouth shut.
There were a few more uncomfortable minutes of silence before blinding light poured into your little box. You closed your eyes out of reflex immediately, finding it painful to look out into the world.
“So you are still there,” Diavolo’s voice was soft as he reached out to see if you were real and not just a hallucination, “You were so quiet that I thought you had gotten out somehow. I’m happy that you were just following orders.”
You could feel his hand on you and normally you would feel utter disgust, but, at the moment, the only emotion inside of you was distraught. You broke down the moment he brushed his warm fingers against your cheek and sobbed uncontrollably. Not just in sadness, but in rage. There were no tears as you cried -- you had no more to give -- but if you could you knew they would be life fire.
“Why?” You finally managed to hiccup out through your continued and persistent sobs, “Why are you doing this to me?”
Lucifer was worried about you. They were all worried about you! And they hadn't given up yet. It was a cruel joke to give you that tiny ray of hope that you knew would never shine upon you.
“I’m not doing anything, my love. Everything happening is the result of your own actions.” You were the one that made him fall for you, you were the one that kept fighting back, and you were the one who refused to reach out for help when it was right in front of you. If only you could learn to behave yourself, he would be allowed to be kinder to you.
"You lied to him." You screamed, finding anything to break down that smug attitude of his. "You know where I am and you know about… about…." You quietly muttered Belphie's name, not feeling you had the right to even say it.
"I never lied. I only said you hadn't contacted me. That is true since I'm the one coming to you. And Belphegor could handle any danger he found himself in if you hadn't gotten him killed."
It was like twisting the knife already buried to the hilt in your heart.
"Do you have any other concerns?"
You couldn't say anything. There was no response you could give to his insane logic and half truths.
Seeing you fall so readily into compliance, he nuzzled against your neck.
"My lord," Barbatos suddenly said, making you aware of his presence, "the carrot."
"Oh, yes."
He cleared his throat. “You were so good while Lucifer was here. You deserve a reward.” His claws brushed carefully over your delicate skin until they reached the rope and sliced through like it was sewing thread. Your body fell loose the moment it was freed, even though you still couldn’t move any of it because of how numb they were, “What would you like?”
Your eyes had finally adjusted to the brightness of the room, so you opened two bloodshot orbs in Diavolo’s direction, feeling completely hollow inside at the sight of him beaming at you. If you didn’t know better, you would almost think him benevolent. It was too bad you did know better.
“Die.” It was the only request you could think of; every hateful thought and plea for freedom you had boiling to the surface in one succinct word.
"My love," he brushed a thumb over your bottom lip before forcing a soft kiss on you, "how could I do that and risk leaving you all alone?" No. He would ensure that both of you lived long enough to enjoy your new, happy life together.

Tumblr media
Yoichi wondered for a long time whether to talk to his brother. The case was important, but Yoichi had some prejudices against him and didn't have much sympathy for him, so it was hard for younger man to gather himself and talk to him.
That's why he ended up sitting on a leather couch in the living room, hunched down and with his head lowered. White long hair covered his face and green eyes making him look even weaker than usual and the decision he had to make didn't help him feel better at all. If anyone saw him now, they'd think he was about to die.
Suddenly, his head jerked up at the sound of the opening of the front door. Speak of the devil. He's back.
* * *
"Tadaima!"
The first thing that caught your eye was the silence in the apartment - no one was watching TV or arguing, which was news to you. Usually one of your brothers was at home when you came back from school or, when they were both, arguing over differences of worldview. Your eldest brother was definitely not one of the best people, and Yoichi kept trying to talk some sense into him even though he was weaker than him.
And you?
You were just trying to survive high school in that circus (which you call home).
You lived with them because they were your closest family, and you couldn't afford to start living alone (not to mention that you were too young to start an independent life).
You didn't take part in their quarrels and you didn't take any sides. As long as your eldest brother's business weren’t about you or your friends, you had no intention of interfering.
You hung up your jacket on the hanger and took off your scarf - it was getting colder and cooler. You could still feel the cold wind from the outside and the tingling on your cheeks and hands when you entered the apartment.
Planning to eat something before you go to your room, you left your backpack in the hallway and headed to the kitchen. There was no leftovers left in the fridge to warm up, so you decided to make a sandwich. You were about to pull out the ingredients when a voice surprised you.
"Okaerinasai, [Your Name]," said your eldest brother as he stood at the entrance to the kitchen and leaned against the wooden door frame. "I didn't hear you come in."
You grabbed the butter harder, that almost slipped out of your hands and looked out the fridge door to see him.
He was wearing a white shirt with two buttons unbuttoned at the top and dark blue suit trousers, which would indicate that he had recently returned from his business.
Deciding you weren't hungry after all, you put down the plastic package and closed the fridge with a bang. You tried not to show how his presence had affected you.
"Where are you going?"
"To my room," you said quickly and tried to walk past him. He, however, wanted to pester you some more.
"Hm? Are you mad at me?" he asked, standing in your way and not letting you leave the kitchen. "You've been treating me waspishly for some time."
"It's not like that, onii-sama."
You tried to defend yourself, but you didn't look in his eye. You clenched your hands into fists and your lips in a thin line searching for words, feeling your heart beat faster and harder in your chest. Like a bird locked in a cage hitting the bars while trying to escape.
"Are you bothered by my business?"
"No..."
"Then what's going on?" He leaned toward you and you felt his warm breath mushing your cheek. "We're family, you can tell me anything."
You closed your eyelids and tightened your fists until your fingernails reflected crescent-shaped marks on the inside of your hands.
We're family.
He said, and that was your problem. That's why you can't tell him everything, and that's why you suffer from sadness every day.
Because you are family.
And what you're feeling is wrong. Bad. That's not what a sister should feel about her brother.
You were too embarrassed to tell anyone, so you were alone. You thought if you avoided him, you'd forget or you'd be able to pass those feelings on to someone else, but you were wrong.
The more you avoided him and hid in the room or went out, the more you missed him. You missed talking together (even if sometimes they were one-sided) or spending time in your company - you don't even remember the last time you ate together or watched a movie.
It also hurt you that he didn't seem to notice how you were distancing yourself from him too busy with his illegal business and his arguments with Yoichi.
Are you wrong about that?
"You don't even call me nii-san anymore, or maybe you'd rather call me onii-chan now," a deeper red entered your already flushed face, covering you from your neck to the tips of your ears.
You put your hand on his chest to push him away so you could walk. It was tough and firm, unlike your second brother. Yoichi was weak and frail even compared to you, although he was very smart. However, you doubted that he could handle everything on his own without you or him.
"Stop, I really need to..."
"What?" He interrupted you by gently grabbing your chin and lifting it up to make you look into his firmly eyes. He placed his other hand on yours stopping it on his chest. "Run back to your room and hide from me because you can't handle your feelings for your big brother?"
You felt the blood suddenly drain from your face with terror and your heart stands up for a split second.
Did he know? Were you so obvious?
"How did–!"
You looked up in shock to finally meet his red eyes staring at you with an enigmatic expression. You never knew what was on his mind no matter how much you thought about it. He smiled wide at you.
"Does it matter now?"
He took a step forward and then the next one pulled you in front of him. You couldn't escape. Not, when he was still holding you like that and looking at you like that. You felt like your knees were about to bend underneath you.
Suddenly you felt your ass leaning against the stone counter in the kitchen. He put both hands on it on either side of you, leaning dangerously close again so that only inches separated your lips.
To avoid bad thoughts and not knowing what he was going to do, you closed your eyes and curling up inside yourself.
"What's wrong, imouto? Don't you love your onii-chan?" he said gently correcting your hair behind your left ear. Not trusting your voice, you shook your head in denial.
"Do you think it's bad?"
He waited a moment for your answer, which came as a slight and uncertain nod, making him laugh quietly.
You were so cute.
"And is that what you want?"
You felt tears begin to gather under your eyelids. This was too much for you, but you continued this interview with him anyway. You felt your whole face turn furious red again when another nod came.
"So what's stopping you?" He rubbed his cheek against yours as he whispered directly into your left ear and stroking his hand over your hair.
You could feel yourself getting hot and pleasant chills running down your lower abdomen and inner thighs.
Trying to ignore that feeling, you swallowed your saliva to finally speak up.
"B-because it's wrong. We shouldn't..."
"Because the society doesn't approve of it? The same ones I want to overthrow soon?" He asked, recalling his dream.
It used to sound childish for you - to overthrow the current world order and rule an army like an evil manga character, but now that he mentions it...
If he created a world where you could be together... Where it could succeed...
"If I want it too, is it still wrong?"
He asked, and the only correct answer should be 'yes', but your lips wouldn't say it. They remain closed in this matter as if they were enchanted by a powerful spell. And the one who threw it was your heart.
"Imouto." He leaned his forehead against yours, and his hand moved from the top of your head to the back of it. "This will be our little dirty secret, and now... Kiss me."
And it was enough for you to break all inhibitions and resistances within you - you wrapped your hands gently around his neck and lightly brushed his lips insecurely. He deepened the kiss.
Too happy and busy processing the pleasant thrills of excitement, you didn't feel him smiling mischievously in the kiss or his attentive eyes focused on your face.
Suddenly, his two hands were behind your thighs and dragged you to the counter and sat on it. While he was still kissing you, he put both his hands on your hips hooking his fingers on the hem of your blouse. He wanted to see how much you'd let him.
Just as soon as happiness and desire awakened in you, anxiety bloomed, but you couldn't stop it when he lifted up your blouse or unbuttoned your jeans. You didn't protest, when your clothes fell on the floor somewhere. You let him guide you by being less experienced on most of these matters.
Increasing uncertainty began to settle in the back of your head, but his kisses on your neck and his hands squeezing your bra-clad breasts quickly drowned it out.
The wet sounds of his kisses on your skin and your quiet groans filled the room. You could feel your core burning and getting wet just by rubbing your tight jeans and his hard crotch.
Every moment you began to desire him more and more as well as the end of this society, where you could never be together. With every next little hickey, you wanted to lost more and more in the feeling and got carried away in a whirlwind of emotions.
"Grab the counter."
He ordered you, and then he pulled your pants harder and slid them halfway through your thighs. If you hadn't grabbed the furniture, you'd have fallen.
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?"
You heard a scream from behind your older brother's back, and when he turned around, you saw Yoichi standing at the entrance to the kitchen. His pale face twisted in horror and disbelief at what he saw.
His younger sister and his older brother...
At the thought of it, he felt his stomach twist and gathered to vomit. He got sick. Begin unable to stand on his feet, he grabbed a frame and dropped the groceries on the floor breaking eggs. Some cans and a few fruits rolled on the floor, however, no one paid attention to it - you all had more important problems on your mind now.
All of a sudden, you felt all of your previous desire and excitement fade away, replaced by a deep sense of shame and guilt. You just wanted the ground to open up and swallow you in to hide you from Yoichi's sight.
Meanwhile, All For One (as he has ordered to call himself recently) calmly fasten his zipper and put his hands into his pocket as he walked towards his office in the apartment.
Passing Yoichi, he patted him on the shoulder, and looking at you from over his shoulder, he said:
"If any of you still need help from your onii-chan, I'm at my place."
Those words and looking at you still sitting on the counter - with your messy hair, your face covered in shame, with numerous hickey on your neck and clavicle, your breasts coming out of your bra through AFO plays and your pants down - caused Yoichi to fall to his knees and vomit. He didn't expect All For One to be so evil and depraved enough to take advantage of their younger sister.
In that moment, he decided to protect you from your brother, but he didn't know that you had already gone to his side and wanted the end of this society as much as he did.

1, it depends,, cinnamon girl by ldr is kinda fitting? obviously in a VERY platonic way,,, i haven't really figured out wilbur and tommy's dynamic in the story buuuut i can see if fitting for now
3, aha well for g/t and actually finished fics it'd be still the wild winds blow as per usual. but i have a couple of non-g/t fics i work on from time to time and i really like those.
i have a killer tommy au and i think i'm really drawn to it just because of the ending, (which i haven't written yet cause im stuck on the beginning), which entails a LOT of crimebois. just. tender moments :3
7, dare you ask that. UHMMMM literally an endless list. all of my g/t aus i have fic ideas for, all of my half-finished series' i have thoughts for, ummm i can't get into the specifics at ALL but i can say easily over a hundred 😓
9, i try to every day, even if it's literally re-reading something i wrote in the past and editing it a little bit.
aaand i haven't written today but the last thing i think i wrote was
“Great, because I don’t actually think I can make anything except that,” Tommy deadpans, chuckling to himself at his own joke.
from wilbur chocolate 3 :D
12, WELL hm i have shown you the serenity playlist already. i don't really use that anymore but i do have it,, i have a playlist for a ghost dream au, and one for that killer tommy au. both are very old fjfj
i'd like to make more but a. i don't see a reason to and b. i consider "playlists" to be like 20 songs MINIMUM so if i don't have that immediately i lose interest reeeeal fast shfshd
15, a while ago puzzle recommended me these two websites (1: oh hello's lyrics, 2: hozier lyrics) so i am not really THAT creative with them. song lyrics are my go to
if i try really hard i can think of one, like for swapped au and that one is just because it rhymed and i referenced oceans a few times.
so either song lyrics or something REALLY simple that relates to the content of the fic
26, AHA all of my vore fics. i've told my mom the plot of curiosity to my little cousin once but i obviously excluded the fanfic aspect and ofc the vore.
but if my family found my socials and i had 1 minute to delete the stuff i didn't want them seeing it'd probably be this or this cause they're the most willing? idk. i feel like i could get away with explaining WHY this character just ATE this character ALIVE in more unwilling scenarios or panic scenarios.,,
THANK YOUUUUU FOR THESE!!!!! ask games are so mf fun :DDD
ask game !!

This or That
tagged by the lovely @queenslayerbee :)
Historical or Futuristic?
DEFINITELY historical. Nearly all my WIPs are heavily inspired by historical events, if not directly set in them.
Opening or Closing Chapter?
Both can be great, but I'll say opening chapter for now, since the best of them can do a wonderful job hooking you into a wider story.
Light and Fluffy or Dark and Gritty?
Dark and gritty all the way. Just look at my URL. I'm not a huge fan of the little grimdark I've read, but I'll take it over a sugar-sweet rom-com or slice of life almost any day (no shade against rom-coms or slice of life stories, there are some I like, they're just not my favorite.)
Hard or Soft Magic System?
Hm, depends on the story. Hard magic systems can be incredibly fun, but I tend to prefer stories where magic is a bit rarer and thus more mysterious. So soft magic system it is, but that's an opinion easily subject to change.
Stand-Alone or Series?
Stand-alones, probably. There are just too many series out there that feel disjointed and easily could have been a much stronger stand-alone. I think the challenges that stand-alones present force authors to write more concise and fulfilling plots. That said, I do want to dip my toes into writing a series some day. I have a couple of ideas in that realm 👀
One Project at a Time or Always Juggling 2+?
I'm definitely more of a WIP monogamist myself. I worked on Blood of Gods and nothing else for over two years. However, now that I've moved towards the more nitty-gritty phase of editing, I've found that having another project to draft balances out well. But I don't think I could do more than what I'm doing at the moment.
One Award Winner or One Bestseller?
One bestseller, though I'm not the proudest to admit that. What can I say, money is nice.
Fantasy or Sci-Fi?
Fantasy for sure. Sci-fi's great to read/watch, but I don't plan on writing it any time soon.
Character or Setting Description?
Deeeefinitely character description. Both as a reader and a writer, I'm far more interested in a character's complexities than what their environment looks like. That said, both are very important and it would be hard to write a good book without setting description.
First or Final Draft?
Uh, well, considering I've never made it to a final draft yet, I'm not sure I can give a good answer here.
Love Triangle in Everything or No Romantic Arcs?
This question feels worded like both are bad things, but I actually love both. More books starring women need to have less, or zero, focus on romance, and I hope to write something like that sometime soon.
I feel the need to defend my affection for love triangles, as until recently that wasn't the case. The love triangles we hate are the ones included for cheap drama, but there's so much more than that. One great trope is when the love triangle exists to highlight a choice between idealogies, like Peeta/Katniss/Gale in The Hunger Games. Another great version of the love triangle (and my favorite rendition of the trope) is when everyone involved is a little bit polyamorous and bisexual and in love with each other, but due to circumstance all of them ending up happily together is impossible. (My favorite examples of this are Arthur/Guinevere/Lancelot from The Once and Future King and Ammar/Jehan/Rodrigo from The Lions of Al-Rassan.)
So... considering how much I've rambled on about them, I guess I'm going with love triangle in everything.
Constant Sandstorm or Rainstorm?
Rainstorm.

First Sentences - Fic Author Tag Game
Rules: post the first sentence of your last ten fics. If you haven’t written ten fics, share as many first sentences as you have.
I’m tagging myself idgaf, nothing but the first is posted so no other links.
1. Moonlight and Roses: Even past the constant, painful din of the hospital, Connor recognizes the metronome of clacking down the hall.
I don’t mind it. I can’t remember why I wrote the first scene in present tense though.
2. I Like Dogs part two, TBD: When his new ‘partner’ came out of his house mercifully shortly, Gavin was staring, incredulous.
Lil sneak peek that may or may not change. ;3
3. Next time we’ll dance slow (working title): “Connor—” came a low hiss from behind, though it went ignored.
Eh it’s fine ig. Another teaser.
4. More Than One Emergency Exit: One minute Connor was scanning over the crowd, more comfortable feeling like a bodyguard than the fifth representative cast over a sea of his people.
This is worded a little awkwardly and it’ll likely change before I publish this oneshot.
5. Detroit’s Shitty Weather has Upsides, Too (working title): “I think he’s sort of like a cat,” Tina said as she and Gavin stood at a table in the break room, casually leaning on its surface and staring at the back of Nines’ head across the bullpen like teenagers in the food court at the mall.
I took this prompt and another one from someplace and smashed them together to do another oneshot I should do a final edit for and post :P
6. Why do Chihuahuas bite? : Nines was not one to waste words.
Hahaha amazing! This is for another oneshot that’s basically done I have posted nothing but I have a BACKLOG.
7. Revenge: [MISSION PARAMETERS: ISOLATE AND ELIMINATE DT. GAVIN REED] loading... loading... [MISSION PARAMETERS: ISOLATE AND ELIMINATE DT. GAVIN REED] accepted.
This is the longfic I was working on before ILD, I restarted this thing three times with different first chapters, I lost my mind. I have like 300k words of this story though in three structured parts. Almost entirely out of order. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
8. Replace: Strolling into CyberLife Tower like he owned the place (which hadn’t been even tangentially true for more than a decade now), Gavin Reed quickly caught sight of the small gathering of people across the vast lobby that was the open space of the ground floor.
This is the start of part two of that longfic, a scene I actually like. Yes this includes the halfbrothers headcanon.
9. Revenge (Connor POV, TBD): Connor was not one to be known as ‘unapologetic’ generally, but in this case it suited him fine.
So I did have a shorter parallel fic planned to run alongside Revenge. Same story but Revenge follows Nines and Gavin. This follows Connor, Hank, and Markus. I realise Connor as ‘apologetic’ could raise questions, especially since this is a post game fic. I maintain this opening line is actually totally based considering what comes after. (Heads up the third part ‘Reclaim’ doesn’t have an official first scene/chapter. Just rough drafted scenes and an outline. That’s why it’s not on here)
10. Hm well I could do an old fic I haven’t touched in years for a fandom I’m not in anymore and don’t want to be… or an NSFW fic drabble…
I’m doing neither you get nine that’s it.
Not tagging anyone else either, but please do if you write and you see this.

I do not condone the actions described in the story, this is all fiction and does not relate to the real members of the BTS in any way. If you are uncomfortable with tags, please do not read!! Or read at your own risk.

Italics — the inner voice, in quotes — the thoughts of the heroine
“Why would you do that?”
"You are his priority"
These words echo in Song’s head, who continues to follow V. The guy is taller than the girl by a head, and stronger in build, therefore he almost completely covers her with himself.
The ground floor is having all the fun, almost forgetting that Suga's dogs are around them. Kook and Chim didn’t touch alcohol, still referring to the fact that this is "cheap swill" that only teenagers drink, because they simply don’t have money for a normal drink. Hope, on the other hand, watched the guys so that they didn't get into a fight or make trouble.
The guys are sitting on the couch waddling and talking about something of their own, sometimes chuckling. But as soon as they notice V, they become serious, get up from their seats and approach him.
“I'll take the little lady on myself," the dark-haired man said, nodding his head back, as if to say, "she's behind."
“The jerk is on you. Will 10 minutes be enough to sort everything out?” Kook and Chim, after exchanging glances, begin to grin, nodding. “Let's go,” taking Percy gently by the elbow, V added, taking Song with him.
“Maybe we could walk?”  Percy asked, looking first at the car and then at its owner.
“Listen, little lady,” the guy began with a heavy sigh. “I have a task: to take you home. We are waiting for kindergarten and leaving,” by saying "kindergarten", V meant the three that remained in the house.
“Can you tell me at least something about... what's his name? Su... Su...”
“Suga,” taking a cigarette out of the pack, said V, leaning back against the car. “I can only say that he is very angry now.” shifting his gaze from the sky to the girl, the guy continued. “Tell me, what were you thinking when you were alone in the room with a guy who was clearly wasted?”
Percy's eyes snapped from the guy to the lantern and, slowly approaching him, she squatted down next to him.
"I got too distracted away and didn't notice him," Song replied quietly, staring blankly at one point. “And when I realized what he was going to do, it was too late.” chuckling, the girl continued, rubbing her palms.
“Hey, little lady, don't worry so much.”  V said, throwing up his hands. “You got out,” the guy grinned.
“Don't worry...” Percy repeated the words of the dark-haired, continuing to look at one point.
Now she could feel safe and not think about the bad, but…
Thoughts were swarming in her head, and they were all about how worthless and stupid she was.
No one would have come to the rescue if he hadn't loved her and watched her all the time. And... who Percy is  in principle?
N O B O D Y
“What are you thinking about, little lady?” V asked, squatting down in front of the girl and putting out his cigarette.
“Hm?” Percy seemed to come out of a trance and looked at the guy, trying to focus her eyes.
“What are you thinking about?”  V repeated his question, to which he received only silence.
Percy just couldn't think of any answer to make it sound plausible. And V seemed to understand what Song was thinking about. The guy was the only one Suga had told almost completely everything about her. Hope, Chim and Kook, of course, knew about Percy's existence, even had to look after her sometimes, at his request. But he trusted no one more than V. Hence the dark-haired man knew a lot about her, though not everything.
“Listen," V began, interrupting the girl's thoughts. “I'm not a seer, so I don't know what exactly you're thinking. But if you worry about the past, you will miss the present.”  Song looked at the guy, pursing her lips. "And now," V continued, extending his hand to the girl. “squeeze your butt and get up. Kindergarten is on the horizon.”
And Percy, without thinking twice, accepted V's help. Getting up from her squats, the girl went to the car. She could hear behind her the enthusiastic shouts of the guys who were running to the car. There were stains on their clothes that had been clean before. Percy guessed what it could be, but decided not to look, so as not to get on her nerves once again by confirming the assumptions.
When Song got into the car, V closed the door and waited for the guys. They didn’t take long to wait, literally flying up to the car in a couple of moments.
“Have you done everything?”  V's tone changed in an instant. If he tried to speak softly when talking to Percy, now his voice had cooled and sounded quite intimidating, and his gaze didn’t seem so kind.
“Yes,” Chim replied, grinning. "It's been a long time since we've had so much fun," he added, exhaling contentedly and closing his eyes.
“Well done," V said with a smirk. “He'll deal with the girl himself. We need to take the little lady home, so take off your stained clothes.”
The guys obeyed V and began to take off their light jackets, on which blood stains were clearly visible in the vicinity. What did they do to the guy there? Well... we'll find out from the news.
***
Sabrina was nervously biting her lips and was afraid to leave the bathroom. The girl closed herself there about 15 minutes ago and was terrified to even stick her nose out. She knew perfectly well that she had screwed up.
The phone rang, causing Sabrina to jump, almost falling off the toilet lid. The girl decided not to worsen the situation, so she picked up the phone right away.
“Hello?” she asked almost in a whisper.
“Tell me, you fucking creature,” a slightly hoarse voice was heard on the other side, which made Sabrina's heart sink. “why are you ignoring all my words?”  the girl was afraid to breathe, let alone to answer. But he didn't demand it now. Sabrina should listen to the end and not interrupt until he finishes. "What's that, 'Today we both have a great chance to meet someone'?"
"You said yourself that I should stick to the role and behave as I always do..." Sabrina replied intermittently.
“Yes, that's what I said," Suga replied with a grin. “but you fucked up anyway. You seem to be a smart girl; you deceived her parents so many times, but couldn't resist twisting her ass in front of them.”  Sabrina bit her lower lip, listening to the guy. “Have you forgotten where I pulled you out of?” the voice turned cold in a moment, thereby scaring the girl even more.
"I haven't forgotten," Sabrina said, swallowing. Images with memories flashed before her eyes, making her heart shrink.
“Next time,” Suga began abruptly. "I'm going to take you back to a place much worse than the one I pulled you out of." Remember that you don't have a chance to fuck up anymore. Even my angelic patience tends to run out."
"I got it," Sabrina whispered, looking at herself in the mirror and gathering her thoughts. “I won't let you down anymore.”
“I have no doubt,” Suga literally growled, and then he dropped the call, leaving the girl alone with her fears and thoughts.
***
The guys and Song drove in silence, Chim and Kook occasionally singing along to songs from the radio. Percy was looking out the window, thinking about her own. What bothered her most was what Suga would text her.
"V said he was angry," thought Song, almost not paying attention to anything around. "And even sent these men to "sort it out""
“Hey, little lady," V called the girl, waving his hand as if to attract attention. Percy nodded questioningly, looking at the guy. “Turn off the airplane mode.” hinting that Suga wants to get in touch with her, V added.
The girl sighed and pulled her phone out of her pocket. Turning off the airplane mode, Percy was preparing for the fact that he wrote her a bunch of furious messages.
However, there wasn’t a single notification from Suga. The guy seemed to... lose interest in her? At least, that's what Percy herself thought. Since she almost slept with a stranger, even if not of her own volition, he should have been disappointed in her and not molest her anymore.
Song didn't notice how they arrived, because she was staring at the screen all the time.
“See you again,” Kook said, bowing politely, almost laughing.
"We will miss you madly," Chim said, kissing the girl's palm, and then stood next to Kook.
"Ignore them, they always behave like that," Hope said, nodding goodbye, after that he stood next to a couple of clowns and gave both of them head slaps.
V was the last to approach Song, and showed with his whole appearance that he was clearly not happy that it was time to say goodbye.
“We are not mafiosi, don't think so,” from these words Percy almost choked on air, and the guy smiled. "And now seriously," V continued, exhaling. “You don't have and won't have my contacts,” the guy purposely highlighted the last words.  “Don't go to questionable parties, keep your phone with you and...” the guy barely noticeably looked around, then approached Percy. “Don't trust anyone but yourself.”
"Even you?"  Chuckling and raising one eyebrow, Song asked, "You don't look like him or like a bad guy." V, hearing this, broke into a smile and an evil light appeared in his eyes.
"Still waters run deep," he said, nodding goodbye.
Percy stood there until Suga's entourage disappeared around the corner. She wasn't going to go home, because it was too early for that. When the parents return home from work, they will swear and ask where Sabrina is. Percy herself would like to know about the second one, because they separated after coming to Jiwon.
The girl decided to climb over the fence into the backyard, where the windows of her room overlook.
"Ribs, my ribs," Song croaked softly, falling on her side from the fence. "It would be better if it was my spine," Percy whispered, getting up from the grass, brushing the dust off her clothes.
Sitting on the swing, which is clearly not intended for such a big child, the girl took her phone out of her pocket again.
“Why are you silent?”  Percy asked, shaking the phone in her hand and whimpering. “Talk to me,” it looked at least strange, but the girl didn't care. All she cared about was that Suga was silent and didn't text anything, which was not typical of him. “Please say something, I can't. As soon as I close my eyes, I see only that animal and his hands on me.” but even after these words, not a single message came. Percy gave up and lay back down on the grass.
“How stupid it was to think that I was special to someone,” the girl whispered with a scoff. Shifting her gaze to the sky, she didn't dare finish her thought out loud.
"Huh, special? Honey, you're not even important to your parents, so why would friends or Suga suddenly love you?”
“Because I always support them, help them and just because I am their close person?”
“Don't deceive yourself. If you don't text, no one will remember you. Nothing, that's who you are. You took the exam 4 times, and your own mother didn’t believe that you would pass in the end. And still doesn’t believe that you will get somewhere and find a job. What does your father do? Always supports your mother, but not you.”
“Dad always supports me if I'm right. When the truth is on Mom's side, then, of course, he is for her.”
“Do you believe it yourself? Remember all your screw-ups, mistakes, quarrels with loved ones, their attitude towards you, quibbles. Just accept the fact that the world would be a better place without you.”
"The world would be a better place," and this time she agreed with her inner voice.
***
Percy didn't remember climbing over the fence again, walking across the street and coming upon a park with a river next to it. Thoughts that: "the world would be a better place without you" completely engulfed her consciousness, leaving a little space only for the most unpleasant memories.
There were practically no people in the park; after all it was not childish time. And if anyone was walking, it was one or two couples or birds. No one even noticed Percy, who was strolling towards the pier.
Standing a step away from the edge of the pier, the girl looked at the water for a long time and looked at the fish, which, for some reason, she was afraid of to hell.
"There are fish... there are big fish."
“And what? Think about it, if you drown, you won't worry about the fish anymore, you won't care about them! Besides, they are afraid of you more than you are"
“They are afraid of you more, they are afraid of you more,” like a mantra, repeated Song, rocking on the spot. “It won't matter anymore, it won't matter.”
Strange, though. Percy is not afraid to die, but she is afraid of fish, which are completely harmless.
“I don't care!” swinging for the last time, the girl exclaimed, scaring the poor fish with one sound, from which they hid.
The next moment, Percy jumped into the water, trying not to open her eyes and not help herself to swim out with her hands. It was only at this moment that she allowed her accumulated emotions to come out. The girl screamed in the water, letting the air out of her lungs and throwing out all the pain, but nothing was heard. Tears, of course, weren’t possible to see or feel, but they were.
And so, when it came time to inhale ... instead of the usual air, the lungs began to fill with water. The instinct of self-preservation worked too late, as consciousness began to leave her, that’s why there was no strength to swim to the surface.
Panic was growing inside her, from which Percy was floundering under the water and trying to cling to something, just to float up.
When Song finally calmed down and resigned herself, she felt someone's hands on her body. Someone gently and carefully, as if Percy was made of porcelain, pressed her to his chest and pushed off from the bottom of the river to float up.
Climbing onto the pier, the unknown man put Percy on it, removing the girl's hair from her face. Song abruptly rolled over on her side, clearing her throat and getting rid of the liquid.
Barely catching her breath, the girl was breathing convulsively, tearing the skin on her neck and chest with her nails, trying to drown out a similar pain inside because of the water. Percy's body went cold, she was shaking, and her lips were trembling.
“Little girl,” taking the girl's right hand in his and bringing it to his lips, the unknown began. “why would you do that?”
"You're not... not V," Percy said, continuing to breathe convulsively and weakly pulling her hand out of his. “Who are you?”
When the unknown person said "little girl", Song immediately thought of V. It was as if he had been watching her and had come save her. There's just one thing. The guy called her "little lady", not "little girl".
“Stay down, don't strain yourself,” the unknown did not answer Percy's question, while not allowing her to turn around to face him.
to be continued...

Captive Together - Mer!Jotaro x Mer!Reader P1
Okay, fair warning, this oneshot is LONG. Like, really really long. I divided it into 4 parts but still every chapter is a monster. I edited it best I could, but when it takes a whole day to do so, you can get tired and unattentive, lol. This whole thing got out of hand and it is weird, but I like it. With that out of the way, enjoy some Mer!Joot 😌
Part 1  |  Part 2  |  Part 3  |  Part 4
Word Count: 8531
Opening your eyes, you winced a little at the stinging jab of pain that shot through your abdomen. With sluggish movements, you drifted forward until you could feel your hand hit glass.
Right. You were in that human facility...
How did you end up in this mess again?
- - - -
“Quick! Go! Go!!” Your voice was urgent and a little panicked, scaring the two pups in front of you to do as you asked. They didn’t know who you were, where you came from, and if you were even able to be truly trusted, but the looming shadow closing in on your location and the terrifying rumble and roar of - what they thought was - a shark was enough to spur them into doing whatever you said.
You had just been swimming by, travelling from place to place looking for a place to live, maybe even a pod who’d accept you. And that was when you spotted the two pups, all by themselves and playing with the sand on the ocean floor, no adults in sight.
Seeing how big and mischievous their grins were, you quickly realised they had most likely snuck away from their pod; bringing back some memories from when you had done that yourself.
With a good-natured sigh, you started to swim over, deciding to take them back to their pod before something would happen.
“Hey, you two.” You clicked out as you approached them calmly, a warm smile on your face. Upon the sound of a voice, the two - they couldn’t have been older than 1,5 years - shot their heads up, eyes comically widening. “What’re you playing?” You asked as you bridged the remaining gap, letting yourself float down to sit on the seabed close to them about two meters away; giving them a little bit of space yet also sitting close enough, to show them you meant no harm.
“We’ve never seen this kind of sand before.” The pup with a pretty, dark blue tail and impressive hairdo spoke up a little meekly and your smile widened just a little bit more at the sweet answer, making both kids relax a bit.
“So you decided to come out here and play in it?”
“Mhm!” The other pup, with a darker grey tail and two markings running crossed down his face, hummed happily, his voice sounding gruff as if he had spent a week in the Red Sea, even at his young age.
“Soo, you didn’t sneakily sneak away from your pod and parents to go exploring the big blue and happened to stumble across this seabed with sand you hadn’t seen before, right?” You questioned cheekily, leaning your chin in your hand as you raised a teasing eyebrow.
Both their eyes widened a bit and you chuckled while the pup with the hairdo curled in a bit on himself. “Are we in trouble?”
“Not with me, no.” You smiled, making him come out of his shell a bit again. “With your parents however? I can’t say.” Now they were both making themselves small, guilty looks on their faces. “C’mon, I’m sure it will be fine.” You reassured them as you pushed yourself off the seabed, swimming over to the two pups until you were in right by them and placing a hand on either of their backs. “It’s best to get you back to your pod now though.”
“O-Okay.”
You hummed a little and pushed them gently to start swimming, one on either side of you. You looked between them both, seeing the anxious looks on their faces and decided to try and distract them a bit as you chaperoned them back. You happened to have noticed a pod took up residence in this area and these two smelled like they came from it, so you knew where to go. You also knew that pod was quite a ways away so you had to find a way to fill the time anyways.
“So, what are your names?”
“I-I’m Josuke, that’s Okuyasu.”
You hummed a little, giving them both another smile. “So, how long ago did you sneak out?”
“Uh, the sun was about there.” Josuke pointed up to where the sun had stood in the sky when they left, filtering through the surface of the water at an angle that told you they snuck out about an hour ago.
“Hm, well, maybe no one in your pod has noticed your absence yet and I can help you two sneak back in!” You started in a secretive voice, making both pups perk up. Okuyasu drifted a little closer to you and grabbed your hand, Josuke seeing and doing the same on your other side, nodding happily at you.
To be honest, you highly doubted no one had noticed their absence, but swimming with two anxious pups was something you would rather avoid. Not only because you feared your lack of experience would make you unable to handle it, but also because anxious pups meant slow pups, and matching their pace when they were anxiously swimming in dread for what was to come was about the most nail biting experience one could have.
“So, why did you swim out so far th-“ whatever you were going to ask was interrupted when your ears picked up on the distant sounds of a motorboat.
Your eyes widening in alarm, the two pups noticed the warning signals you automatically gave off and soon picked up on the noise as well, seeing as the boat was speeding closer very fast.
Now, humans were aware of the existence of Mer, but this was supposed to be a protected area. So if there were humans here, especially those with the loud motors? That could only mean bad news.
“Quick! Go! Go!!” You wrenched your hands from their grips before starting to push on their backs, trying to urge them to go.
Okuyasu let a feared whine escape from his throat while Josuke immediately employed the tactic he had been taught to use whenever in danger: call out.
“Shark! Shark!” He trilled out in a panic, the trills and clicks of his voice carrying a lot further through the water than at his normal pitch and volume, soon joined by Okuyasu in the same fashion as he remembered what he was supposed to do.
While you were glad they had their security systems in order, you knew how clever humans were, especially those who went against the rules set in place, and you feared that they might hear the two pups.
“Ssh, ssh, I’ll keep you safe from the shark! Let’s hide between those rocks, come on!!” You managed to grab both their little hands again and frantically dragged them along with you as you swam full speed towards the rocks that sat about forty meters away, both Josuke and Okuyasu too shocked by the sudden speed they were being pulled along with to keep shouting warnings in panic.
It was dangerous to get to the rocks. The boat was almost right above you by now and to get to safety, you had to swim with the pups underneath the belly of the thing. The water was crystal clear today and the chances of being seen were high.
Safety for the pups was your one and only priority though and so you gunned it.
With an incredible speed, you shot through the water, making full use of your tail as you dragged the poor kids with you, them trying their best to flap their tails and help swim - although it was mainly for decoration and show by now.
Forty meters,
Thirty five,
Thirty,
You were now swimming directly underneath the boat and you tilted your head, keeping a wary eye on the thing as you saw it suddenly stop and rock, presumably from movement from the humans on top.
Twenty five,
A shape on the boat, barely able to be made out through the distortion of the water, tipped you off to the incoming danger and you immediately pulled Josuke and Okuyasu in, pushing them forward with all your might right before a sharp and searing pain shot past your left side.
From the boat, someone had thrown a harpoon down, the speed and angle serving to graze your side, creating a nasty cut on your waist that ran from there, diagonally over part of your stomach before the thing embedded itself in the sea floor.
A sharp and searing pain came in waves but you refrained from calling out, only hissing through your teeth with a small grunt before you shook your head, ignoring it for now as you saw a rope was attached to the end of the sharp stick. It was slowly wrenched free from the sand and you wasted no time in shooting past it, scooping Okuyasu and Josuke up in your arms as you rushed past them, seeing as they were clinging onto each other in shock as they saw you being hit.
“You’re bleeding!”
“It’s okay!” You chirped back over the rush of water coming past as you tried to swim as fast as possible with the pain, leaving a trail of blood behind as you went.
Fifteen,
Ten,
Five,
“Okay, hide behind those rocks and stay there no matter what happens okay? Don’t come out until someone from your pod comes and gets you, do you understand?!” You shook them both a little, maybe not being the best course of action but you had to make your point clear.
“O-Okay!”
“Don’t make a sound either!” You called back over your shoulder as you started swimming away, secretly looking to see if they were well hidden and stayed put as you asked them to. You saw the both of them look at you with fear and anxiousness, peeking from behind the rocks, and sent them the last best reassuring smile you could muster before turning to look forward again and booking it. You were gonna save those pups if it cost you your damn life.
- - - -
Your fuzzy memory finally began to clear up a bit and you remembered how another boat came and chased the hunter’s one away. You had led the hunter’s boat away from the pups but got trapped in a cove, only for the new boat with science humans to come to your aid.
Upon seeing your injury, they got very concerned and offered to take you with them so they could treat you and help you.
Despite their honeyed words and friendly appearance though, there was one blaring warning signal. These humans that were claiming to trying to ‘help you’, smelled exactly like the ones from the boat that had injured you. Which meant these people had interacted; and not just in passing or a small falling out, no they spent a while with each other to have the scent rub off that heavily.
In other words, these were no friends to you.
Despite knowing this, you had agreed to their offer. Those pups were still nearby, what could you have done? Maybe if they took you along they’d be satisfied, and never realise there were more Mer nearby. And so you allowed them to take you.
-
“Good news! Today the bandages come off and we are planning to transport you to a bigger tank while you further recover!” One of the humans you had come to see a little more often in your past two days in this tiny tank approached, that easily recognisable false smile on his face. Whenever he approached like that, there was something else behind it. Yet, you pretended to not notice, perking up in happiness and sloshing around in your tank like an excited puppy despite the pain that brought.
“For me?” You asked. Your human English was a little rusty and sounded somewhat garbled, which was no surprise given how you had to use completely different parts of your vocal cords to speak it, but at least it was understandable.
“Yes!” He grinned before stepping even closer. “And! Inside there is a surprise! Around the same time as we found you, we found another Mer, stuck in a fishing net. They’re in the tank you will be transferred to today!” He sounded genuinely happy this time and you realised with a bit of horror he probably saw it all as a big experiment. Most likely wanting to see how two of the same species reacted upon meeting. “It’s that one over there!” He pointed behind himself to a large tank on the opposite end of the large room.
You had noticed this tank almost immediately when you first got to this facility. After all, why were you stuffed into a tiny tank that was more fitted to fit an octopus rather than the large tank that was available right there? But if it housed another Mer then that was logical. Probably a bigger Mer than you as well.
You had seen the scientists hover around it but you never saw any creature inside when you looked at it.
Would it be a male or female waiting for you in there? Given the man’s excitement however, you had a hunch. All you could say was you hoped they hadn’t been injured by the humans to bring in like you were.
- - - -
You spent the rest of the day just trying everything in your power to annoy the ever living fuck out of the scientists around.
You were in a small glass tank, barely big enough to let you stretch your tail out fully and with an open top, allowing you to communicate.
Sloshing around and making water spill over the tank was one of your favourite things to do, your goal to make the papers in the hands of the scientists wet or to make them slip and slam a few teeth out on the floor. If they glare at you, you just acted like it was completely involuntary, having pain in your injury, or the need to move being the cause of you sloshing and splashing so much.
Your next method of annoying scientists was: throwing the small ball they had given you directly to their heads. It was a small yellow thing, apparently filled with air so that it would float on the water. And just the perfect size to lob at someone’s head.
Of course, if they turned around angry, ball in hand, you’d act as if it was all a game. All a game your dumb and simple mind could come up with. And so the scientists just let it happen, picking up the ball and begrudgingly returning it to you every time so you wouldn’t start sadly whining like some puppy.
And that was exactly what your goal was; to convince them you were no smarter than a seal.
Of course, you had the ability of speech, but you intentionally kept your vocabulary in the low. Talking a bit like a pup, with missing or incorrectly pronounced words while the rest of your behaviour mirrored it.
You smiled a lot, indulging the scientists in questions about Mer life that you answered ‘as best you could’ while in reality you were stringing lie after lie after lie. You pretended to be their friend, just like they did to you. What comes around, gets around, after all.
Sometimes though, when you were talking to the humans, you felt as if there were eyes on you. And not the scientist eyes or the camera eyes, but angrier ones.
-
As the morning bled into noon, you noticed how warily the scientists were being around the big tank. It was open at the top same as yours and reached until about the human’s midriff, but the rest of the tank disappeared into the floor for it was probably a lot deeper than it seemed to you if there was another Mer in there that you’d never even seen before.
But, noticing how hesitant the humans were to stick their head over the glass and look down, you figured you’d test them a little.
No one was really paying attention to- or around you, so you picked up your little yellow ball - the only entertainment you had - and tested its weight a few times before chucking it so hard and so far that it soared over everyone’s heads and plopped right in the bigger tank.
As it landed, you cheered as if it had been your childish goal all along before expectantly looking at the humans. They were, after all, expected to bring it back to you.
Much to your internal delight, you watched how the humans looked back at you in horror and disbelief. It all but confirmed your suspicions that whoever was in there, was very much not happy. And different from you, they decided to go the aggressive route.
When none of the scientists made a move to retrieve your ball for you, you started to make a little whining noise in the back of your throat, making puppy eyes and starting to look all sad.
If the Mer in there indeed went the aggressive route, that meant that your plan was still in full swing. For, if they only exuded aggression, the scientists wouldn’t necessarily see many signs of higher intelligence. They would most likely chock it up to animal instinct instead of genuine anger. Which meant you could continue playing as dumb as you liked without them getting suspicious.
“It’s okay! I’ll, uh... go get it for you!” One of the scientists spoke up towards you and you perked up a little, gripping the edge of your tank and pushing up a bit to mock excitement.
Curiously, you watched as he went to grab a long net on a stick. Was it not within arms reach?
You watched as he walked back over to the tank and warily started inching the pole towards the ball. The entire thing shook with nervousness and you watched in awe as suddenly, out of nowhere, a large Mer shot up, slashing through the invading item and breaking it clean in half before disappearing below the floor again in a flash.
The scientist screamed in fear as the pole got cut clean through, the net falling down into the water before sinking, while one of the other humans went to comfort the scared one.
That was the best thing you had seen in all your time being here.
“What has been said about unauthorised interactment with the large tank?!” A large booming voice suddenly sounded from the door the humans constantly walked in and out of and you, together with all the scientists, turned your heads towards it.
“S-She threw her ball in there, I was just trying to get it back like protocol says!”
“She can go get it herself. We’re transferring her right now.”
All eyes turned to you with that and you shrunk a little, lowering yourself into the water until only your eyes shyly peeked out. Somehow you had a bad feeling about this.
- - - -
Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad! BAD!
You were dangling in mid air on a crane or contraption, some sort of harness put around you and painfully rubbing against your wound. Mers healed faster than humans but your wound was still very much present and open and painful. Did they completely forget you had that or something?? They were even supposed to take off the bandaging today and they didn’t! Although right now it was your only protection from excruciating pain.
Your tail barely had any support and was basically dangling in mid-air, held up only by the fact and grace of being attached to you and your attempt of using your abdominal muscles to keep it steady. Unfortunately for you, that was where your wound was as well, so WAHEY!
You were cursing up a storm as the crane moved you across the room, hovering over the floor as if you were flying. To the scientists, it just sounded like a bunch of panicked clicks and trills, but for you, you were using language so colourful, it would make anyone blush.
Water dripped from you like stalactites in a wet cave and the only satisfaction you had in this moment was that it would make the floor a little slippery for the scientists, hopefully with at least one falling on their face. After what seemed like an excruciatingly long time but was only a few minutes, you were dangling over the larger tank.
Your knuckles were white as you gripped onto the harness holding you up. You looked down and noticed how big it actually was. As you tried to gauge the depth from above the water however, the support holding you up clicked loose and you fell down into the tank, harness and all.
Thankfully, you managed to angle yourself to dive in at least a little gracefully instead of just belly flop in - which would be very bad from that height and with your injury.
As you fell into the water you had your arms protectively shielded over your head and your eyes screwed shut, but now you hesitantly blinked them open, bringing your arms down as you sunk down a tiny bit more before stopping.
Looking to your right, you were surprised to see several scientists looking through the glass. Apparently there was a room a floor lower which gave them perfect view of the big tank and the happenings inside it. They all had clipboards and notes and whatever, ready to record and write down everything that was about to happen.
That was the last thought you could really give it, for you suddenly saw something large and fast move from the bottom of the tank, all the way up to you.
Curling in on yourself on instinct, you looked up only to be met by one of the biggest and most intimidating Mer you had ever seen. His torso was in proportion to you but his tail was absolutely massive, almost twice the size of yours. It was strong and powerful looking, sleek black and probably about four or four and a half meters in length while his torso himself was impressive as well, muscle and raw power screaming from every inch of him.
How in the fuck were those scientists ever able to capture him?
His face was set in a glare and you instantly averted your eyes, displaying submissiveness as you turned your head and bowed it a little.
Now, you had wanted to display submissive behaviour from the beginning, just to keep your act up, no matter what kind of Mer was in here, but when you opened your mouth to try and talk and he growled in warning, you immediately slammed it shut. This shark Mer made it very easy.
After a few more seconds of him glowering at you, you opted for safety and abruptly turned around, swimming down as fast as you could to the bottom of this 20-meter deep tank and shooting into the massive skull that sat there. You had to struggle to fit through the eye, the harness still on you hooking against it and hindering you even more, but with some squeezing and manoeuvring, you managed to get inside.
Looking out of one of the eyes, you saw he hadn’t really moved but was still glaring at you before letting out a ‘Tch’ and casually turning to the side, languidly swimming away and down to the corner opposite of the one you were in.
There was a thick, white, concrete column in the middle of the tank, impeding your vision of him as he disappeared behind it.
Letting out the breath you were holding, you closed your eyes for a second before inhaling the water around you. It felt much cleaner and more crisp than the stuffy tank you had been forced to sit in, though the scent of the other Mer was very present as well.
Looking down at yourself, you hissed a little and cursed out the humans as you grabbed hold of the harness and lifted it as far away from the wound on your side and stomach as possible.
The skull you were in provided cover yes, but it was also half buried in sand and you barely had any room to move or even breathe, let alone try to get that damn harness off. Going out while the shark Mer was around and wary of you seemed like a bad idea however so you just stayed put, opting to wait until night before getting out and trying to get the damn thing off.
So, in the time you were waiting, you decided to try and figure out what the fuck kind of skull you were in. It was slanted and half buried in sand, elongated jaw with big round eye sockets. It sure as hell wasn’t any animal you knew of. You even started doubting if it was a real animal at all. When you touched it it definitely didn’t feel like bone at least.
Several hours passed like that and you finally peeked your head out the eyehole again.
The tank itself was not too bad. The bottom was filled with sand and rocks, water plants and seaweed and such sticking out and growing from it, making it look rather natural.
With some effort, you squeezed yourself out of the eyehole again, hissing as you scraped your wound before settling on the sand right in front of the skull and starting to wriggle and tug at the harness.
Why did the humans do it like this? Weren’t they supposed to take it off? Or were they so afraid of your new tank-mate that they just decided ‘fuck it, you’re on your own’?
Aggravated, you attempted to pull it over your head. Unsuccessful.
You tried to unclasp it. The clasps are at the back where you can’t reach. Unsuccessful.
You attempted to pull it apart. You are not strong enough. Unsuccessful.
By now you were running out of options and just violently tugging at the constricting thing. It sat over your gills on your neck, making it hard to breathe - though that didn’t stop you from spitting every curse in the book at the scientists who were undoubtedly still watching, even if the glass where they stood earlier was as dark as the night.
A flutter of the water suddenly reached your ears and you snapped your head up to see the shark Mer quickly swimming towards you, angry and with a murderous look in his eye.
Under optimal circumstances you would have hidden somewhere he couldn’t fit, like the skull. Unfortunately for you, you were wearing a harness and also wouldn’t be able to get inside fast enough.
With not many options left, you darted to the left, quickly swimming away. Taking a glance back, you gasped when you saw he was in hot pursuit. With his larger tail he was quickly gaining but you shot to the side, cutting the corner around the concrete pillar in the middle as much as possible.
Looking to the left briefly, you spotted a corner where the sand was more tailored than everywhere else, a large indent where a body had been resting.
That was all the time you got to look at it however, since you were already rounding the pillar again to show the skull you had been hiding in.
Right now, you cursed yourself for darting. There was no way you could outswim him. You should have just rushed into the skull back there or stayed still, hoping he wouldn’t tear you apart. Now, all you could do was try to get back in the skull.
That was a vain hope however, as he had already caught up with you.
Your blood froze as his right arm curled around your waist, ready to grab. Yet before he did, he hesitated. Instead, he allowed you to slip away a bit further before clamping his arm around your tail, tightly grabbing hold there as he forcefully stopped your momentum and yanked you back, grabbing your shoulders with both hands once in range.
In one smooth motion, he slammed you shoulders first into the concrete pillar before removing one hand and using the claws on it to rip straight through the harness still stuck on you.
“Stop disturbing the water with your thrashing and sleep!” He growled out, a threatening undertone in his voice while his face was so close to yours.
You were breathing fast and staring back with wide eyes but it seemed he wanted an answer before he backed off so you nodded.
Seemingly content with that, he rudely shoved you aside before lazily swimming away, flicking his hand to get rid of some excess fabric of the harness, his tail swishing side to side as he disappeared behind the pillar again to the corner he seemed to have taken up residence in, not looking back once.
You blinked a few times, looking at where he disappeared for some seconds before you swam up, swimming out of the harness with as little tail motion as possible.
Your breathing finally levelled and you turned back around, grabbing the remains of the harness and swimming over to the skull, draping the destroyed thing over a lip on the outside before squeezing into the eye.
- - - -
Waking from your slumber, you got to work digging.
You had a hunch this skull was going to be your home for the time being, so you decided to make a better way of entering and exiting. Digging through the sand laying in the mouth of the skull, you followed the elongated jaw and dug until you made a nice little opening that you wouldn’t have to squeeze through.
While you were digging, you noticed the other Mer swimming around. He avoided your little hovel but otherwise would not sit still. Making laps, checking the corners, running his hand along the wall of the tank as if testing it.
Everything pointed to him wanting to get out of here, just as much as you did.
For now, you decided to keep staying out of his way though.
Right as you exited your skull, you were met with the powerful and intimidating form of the merman. There goes your plan. “What’re you doing?” He snapped at you almost, his tone curt and to the point.
You were still half inside but decided to just stay there like that, looking up at him. “I’m making an easier and less painful entrance.” You explained, motioning to the blood stained bandage on your side. It was designed to be worn under water but even so you doubted it was doing much good.
“Well, be more quiet, you’re making too much noise.” He growled before turning around, nearly hitting you with his tail fin as he went.
You were about one second away from giving him a well earned tap on said tail fin, but managed to refrain yourself at the last second.
“Wait.” You called out after him and he surprisingly enough stopped, looking back at you over his shoulder while you got out of the skull fully. “What’s your name?”
“...”
He didn’t say anything for a second, just looking intently at you for a second, almost as if he was searching for something. Whatever he found he must have been satisfied with though.
“Jotaro.”
A smile appeared on your face at his answer and that piqued his interest. For, when he had been watching you in the small tank opposite the room, you had smiled so much whenever the scientists interacted with you, and it had annoyed him to the point of making his blood boil. But now? Up close? He could see this was the first genuine smile you had given since arriving in this facility, even if it was timid.
“Nice to meet you, I’m Y/N. Let’s get the fuck outta here soon, okay?”
Before anything else could be said, you heard your name being called from above. You had given it to the humans but that didn’t stop the pit of disgust when you heard it. Your face contorted for just a second before you steeled yourself and twisted it into the sweet innocent look the humans were used to.
Unknown to you, Jotaro warily watched you as you did that, sharp eyes following your form as you went to the skull and grabbed the harness laying on top before swimming up to the surface.
Shyly poking your head out of the water, you darted your eyes back and forth a bit before landing on the man standing right next to the edge of the tank who had called you.
“Good morning.” He smiled and you bobbed your head a bit in greeting. “Where is the harness?” He then asked and you let your hand drift to the surface, the broken harness in hand.
The man tutted a little but then stuck out his hand, taking it from you before moving it to his other hand and using the one in the water to motion you closer, pointing at the bandaging around your waist. “We didn’t have time to take a look at that yesterday. How about now, Hm?”
God how you wanted to bite his hand. Leave that damned harness on all night and then act like nothing happened? Claiming to just want to look at and take care of your wound again? It almost made you regret trying to trick them by acting dumb and nice.
Someone else didn’t have the gripe of trying to keep up the act of being friendly however.
Out of nowhere, Jotaro breached right in front of you, immediately diving back down and pushing you down with him while he violently smashed his tail against the scientists outstretched hand.
Said scientist screamed in pain as several of the bones snapped at the powerful strike, others rushing towards him while Jotaro just left the chaos behind and pushed you further down before abruptly letting go about halfway to the bottom.
“The fuck are you doing.” He snarled and you backed up a bit.
“What do you mean?”
“Interacting with them. What is your plan to get out of here that makes you need to get all friendly with them?”
As he said that, you tried to steady your breathing. No matter his looks or his seeming temper, his mind was clearly not to be underestimated and already proved to be very sharp. He knew you were putting up an act.
“I’m trying to make them think I am no more intelligent than like, what? A four or three year old human?” You spoke, getting a little lost in thought thinking about human ages and their behaviours during it.
“Why.”
Jotaro’s voice snapped you out of it and you focused again.
“If they expect this level of intelligence from me-“ You kept your hand flat and stationary at the level of your bellybutton. “-they will tailor security measures and such around that level of intelligence. Humans like to cut corners. If they think I don’t know how to open a door, they won’t lock it.” You continued and Jotaro had his eyes narrowed at you. “So, when I suddenly show this level of intelligence-“ You moved your hand up and hovered it at the level of your neck. “-they won’t expect it and I’ll be able to get out of here while they try to figure out what happened.
Despite seemingly getting your explanation, Jotaro seemed truly revolted by the idea of buttering up the scientists.
Without another word, a frustrated rumble tumbled from his chest and he turned to the right, starting to swim away, back to his corner. But not before stopping once more and looking back at you. “Don’t let them touch you.” With that, he continued on his way.
Bringing your arm in, you held it to your chest as you watched him swim away.
- - - -
About two days passed and during that, your communication with Jotaro had been minimal. You two more or less avoided each other - though there wasn’t any bad blood between you two.
Just now, a big slab of tuna had been lowered and - while you had planned to just wait until Jotaro was done - he seemed to have other plans. He sliced off a chunk, letting it drift down as if he didn’t notice it falling while he himself continued with what he had. Yet subtly, you could see him look at you, releasing one low click sound from deep within his chest. A non-verbal go-ahead that many leaders of a pod used; to show that it was for you.
Sending him a quick smile, you darted over and scooped up the meat from below him right before it could touch the floor. With that, you then turned around and went to the corner opposite of him. For once, Jotaro was not in his usual corner. And you were going to make full use of it by doing what you had been meaning to for the last few days.
Putting the tuna in your mouth and just holding it there, you started plucking the gigantic seaweed that grew from the bottom, slicing it at the soil with your claws until your arms were practically completely full.
Peeking your head around the pillar, you saw Jotaro still eating and thus silently yet quickly swam over to his corner.
The sand was bunched up in a small hill on one end, a deeper and bigger indent right in front of it, showing it was where Jotaro slept every night. There were some plants growing around it, but not many. None close enough that they would be able to bend in the current and annoy him as he tried to sleep at least. That was good.
Now, you knew sleeping on the sand was fine. You had been doing it yourself, even insulated and kept a little more warm because of your protective surrounding skull. And, while the heap of sand behind the dent was meant for the same purpose - to retain some body heat - you knew from experience that plants were way better at that.
So, you started placing the seaweed leaves on the sand indentation. One by one you placed them down, layering them over comfortably until it padded the entire space.
You were happy you picked a lot because you had underestimated how big Jotaro’s bedding would be, seeing he was quite massive as well.
Next came the tricky part. Getting the leaves to stick together and stay on the sand, paired with getting rid of all the prickly edges.
Opting to make sure it stayed in place first, you curled the edges of the leaves around the edge of the sand indent and buried it firmly in the grain, making sure to tuck it in well and good so that it would not let go. With that out of the way, you began chipping away at the sharp edges.
You worked as fast as you could, wanting to be finished before Jotaro was done eating and would return here.
Finally done with the snipping, you ran your hand across it, satisfied that there was no uncomfortable plant membrane sticking out anymore.
Onto the last step, you started with the hardest part: weaving the plants together. Cutting small incisions in the leaves with your nails, you started interlocking those cut sections, fitting them together like a puzzle until every leaf on the entire bed was interwoven.
You were almost done when you spotted movement out of the corner of your eye. Turning your head, you saw Jotaro swimming closer, a confused yet wary look on his face.
In the blink of an eye you were already swimming away, booking it towards your skull and shooting inside with practiced ease. You were pretty sure Jotaro couldn’t fit through the mouth, so you felt relatively safe in case he got mad about you messing with his sleeping spot.
No angry sounds came however.
- - - -
Several more days passed just like that. You had made a seaweed bed for yourself as well, stuffing it in the skull and spending quite some time digging a little further into the sand so that you would have a true little hovel. Because of this you realised the skull had no lower jaw, which allowed you to dig down into the sand, causing for even more insulation to keep yourself warm at night. Was it necessary? No. Did it feel great to sleep in a warm environment? You bet it did.
Your interaction with Jotaro was still bar to none. Although he did seem more accepting of you, no longer letting out a dangerous or angry rumble when you moved too much or splashed around a bit.
You had gone back to playing with your yellow ball, throwing it at the scientists heads - though they dodged it more easily now that their attention wasn’t divided between two tanks. Still, whenever you did hit one of them, it felt like a huge accomplishment.
While pretending to play however, you took the opportunity to gather information. Pick up on what the scientists were saying, checking the tank walls while you were pretending to swim around as fast as you could - while in actuality you went only about half as fast. In particular, hopping up on top of the concrete column rewarded you with figuring out there were cameras in the thing. They were small, built in and probably very expensive.
So the scientists were watching your every move even if they weren’t watching.
You honestly felt terrible when you figured that out and had retreated back to your skull, not coming out for 28 hours, not even for food.
About thirteen days had passed since you first came here, and you still had no idea how to get out...
- - - -
To say the scientists of the research facility were in excited chaos and confusion that morning was an understatement.
After nearly two weeks of no process at all with the Mer they captured - the two of them only avoiding each other as much as possible - they come in for work, only to see the two of them curled up in the male’s nest and sleeping together!?
“What the hell happened?! John! Get the footage of last night!”
“Right!” Said man immediately sprinted away to get it while the rest stayed glued to the glass, watching the two Mer as best as they could with how far away from the glass they had set up camp.
A few minutes later, John returned and they all watched with baited breath to see what happened.
Operating the four cameras, they switched between them and fast forwarded the footage from last night until there was motion, pressing play.
“What happened that gave them a change of heart?”
- - - -
Disturbance in the water had roused Jotaro from his sleep.
There was absolutely nothing in this tank except for a feeble artificial water current that helped with filtering. So, to suddenly feel such jerking motions in the water could only mean that it was the other occupant of the tank.
Jotaro tried to ignore it for a bit and go back to sleep but the irregularity and violence in which you were moving meant there was no chance of that.
A little annoyed, Jotaro got up and started swimming over to the skull you had taken residence in.
Unlike the last time you had woken him up during the night, you were not in front of it. Furrowing his brows, Jotaro turned up and swam to one of the eye sockets. Gripping the edge of it, he pulled himself closer and peered inside.
It was hard to make anything out in the dark but with the limited night vision he had, Jotaro could see your form, completely curled in on yourself on top of a bed similar to what you had made for him.
Only, then you twitched.
Your whole body jolted for a bit, a barely audible squeak leaving you before you settled again, only for you to jolt again a few seconds later. Your face was screwed up in pain and discomfort and Jotaro let his gaze drift to your waist, seeing if you could be in pain from that, even if it should have healed for the majority of it.
It wasn’t that though. You didn’t clutch at it in pain or explicitly tried to avoid touching it. You seemed to just be having a nightmare.
For a moment Jotaro considered just leaving. You’d wake up from it eventually and would then just go back to sleep. But that thought was quickly chased away.
Not ever had he seen you so... vulnerable. And as he looked at you, something in him screamed at him to protect you. To protect you, to hold you, to keep you close and safe. Only after a few seconds of feeling his stomach twist did Jotaro realise. Wait, shit- did he just imprint on you?
Just like pups would imprint on parents, so could future mates imprint on each other. It didn’t always happen or all that often actually, but something in Jotaro told him that that was exactly what just happened. Fuck.
Stunned for a few seconds longer, it was another small whimper from you that snapped him out of it. Pushing forward, Jotaro got closer to the eye but he could soon see that he wouldn’t be able to reach you through there with his arm, you were too far to the back and he definitely wouldn’t be able to fit. Hell, he wouldn’t even be able to put both his shoulders through there, let alone his tail.
So, with no other option, Jotaro would have to fully go inside another way.
He didn’t want to invade your personal space, but what other choice did he have? With a bit of hesitation, he swam towards the entrance you had dug and looked down into it. While it was big enough for you to be a comfortable and easy fit, Jotaro would either not fit at all, or have to really squeeze.
He got up for a second and sighed. He could hardly believe he was actually gonna do this. With a little stretch of his back and tail in anticipation, he grabbed hold of the roof of the mouth of the skull.
Lifting it out of the sand was less heavy than he had thought, most likely because of the light material of the skull, but that didn’t mean it was easy. The sand was suctioning it quite strongly but he only had to lift it a little bit to accommodate himself, not pull it out completely.
After a few seconds of lifting it up, Jotaro released it, content to see it stayed at the same height he had put it in before he almost immediately ducked down and made his way inside.
Swimming slowly to not scare you awake even more than you probably would be, Jotaro reached where you were tucked in the corner.
“Y/N.” He softly called out your name but it didn’t do shit. With a lack of social skills or experience, and the need to do at least something, Jotaro instead just opted to grab your shoulder. “Wake up.”
In an instant, you came to life. Seeing nothing but a large form hovering over you caused an immediate fight or flight response and you grabbed at the hand on your shoulder, using your other to swipe at your attacker, only for them to grab both your wrists.
“It’s just me, calm down.” The voice of Jotaro spoke and your breath hitched in your throat. Jotaro? What? How?
Any logic was cast out of your mind as your instincts kicked in. Right as Jotaro let go of your wrists, you shot forward and clung to him. The safety that him being larger and stronger provided and the body heat he emitted the only thing playing in your barely awake mind, still half stuck in the nightmare.
Jotaro was taken aback as you wrapped around him, yet, for what felt like the first time in forever, he welcomed the contact. As he raised one arm to attempt to wrap it around you and provide more safety, he instead painfully slammed his elbow against the skull, making you squeak and cling tighter to him before realising it was not a threat and letting up a bit.
As much as Jotaro wanted to, he couldn’t stay here. This skull could barely fit him as is, let alone with another person there.
Patting your shoulder twice, you looked up at him and Jotaro felt his heart seize at the look you gave him. You also understood what he meant however and let go of him, floating back a bit.
Placing his hand on your head, Jotaro turned with a bit of effort and swam out of the skull.
As his tail disappeared from sight, you cast your eyes down. You were so tired and barely conscious enough to keep your eyes open, yet still, going back to sleep sounded like the last thing you wanted to do.
Suddenly however, you felt your wrist being grabbed and Jotaro yanked you with him out of that skull.
Confusion riddled your sleep heavy mind and you barely had enough thought to move your tail, attempting to help swim but mostly being dragged along by Jotaro.
Before long, you two reached Jotaro’s nest and he sat down on it, pulling you a bit closer since you were practically as far away as you could be, stretched out arms and confused. When you still didn’t seem to get it, Jotaro pulled you down with him until you were pressed against him, your back to his chest as he had his arm around you from behind. His tail started curling around you until it fully encased your form, pushing under your head until you were laying it on top, as if using his tail as a pillow.
“Sleep.” Jotaro spoke softly from right behind you, almost whispering it into your ear, making your heart skip a beat. Almost immediately after saying that, a faint and low rumble began coming from his chest, almost as if he were purring, and you could instantly feel yourself becoming less anxious.
The soft vibrations on your back together with the protective arm wrapped over you and the strong, thick tail curled around and in front of your entire body made you feel safer than you had in a long time - maybe ever.
By now, you could barely remember your nightmare, only that it scared you to death. But even then, all those fears were slowly driven away by the comfort of Jotaro’s warmth and the protection he brought.

What are your feelings towards 2.1 genshin? You mentioned having a lot of lukewarm ones in some tags :O
hm... short version: i feel mhy had a list of cool moments/story beats they wanted to hit in 2.1 archon quest, and rushed through cramming all of those into a single update at the cost of literally any good writing/character development/pacing.
long version: i'll cut this to avoid too many spoilers for folks/contain my complaining under a cut:
EVER'S LIST OF GRIEVANCES, 2.1 EDITION:
1) the pacing is super whacked out. i get that mhy wants to make each region wrap in 3 chapters (consistent with mondstadt and liyue), but the pacing for Inazuma as a whole was incredibly rushed at the end. the first 2 chapters did a great job of setting up the context for the vision hunt decree, introducing the toll it takes on Inazuma's citizens/visitors to the nation, and the introducing the resistance as well. the world quests available with 2.0 also went to great lengths to develop the theme of how the war & civil unrest created problems caused both by the shogunate and the resistance. then, in the climactic ending... it went almost entirely unaddressed? after the decree is repealed, vision holders are given their visions back and state they completely recovered their memories, but neither the main storyline nor raiden's quest address the rest of the human cost (lost time, lost lives, displaced populations). it feels like everything wrapped up too neatly.
2) there's a serious gap between raiden's ideals and the way her actions are written. raiden suffered great loss (her twin, her friends, even her subjects) throughout her reign, which is a reasonable (if whacked out) logic to base her pursuit of eternity upon. what i wanted to see (and mhy did not deliver) was the depth of her conviction that caused her to enforce something as drastic as the vision hunt decree. the fact that she flatly stated she was fully aware of its human cost even in the plane of euthymia substantiates how deeply she believed in her ideals... only for it to be effectively overturned by (1) conversation with yae/traveler? all the emotion in raiden's character trailer never makes a single appearance in the main line game (other than the animated sequence in which you’re very quickly told, not otherwise shown by raiden’s dialogue or choices, what she suffered), which is absolutely boggling.
3) no accountability for raiden's action = shallow character development: to that end, the lack of depth in her individual character quest is also disappointing... i get that she's the eternal god-ruler of inazuma which would present a very different public reaction than, say, a president doing the same thing, but the fact that the human cost of the decree isn't addressed at ALL is ridiculous. her character quest being... a shopping trip... lacks the development that other archons (venti, zhongli) had in their respective quests. i think raiden truly wants to protect her living subjects through her pursuit of eternity, yet the inner conflict between "a god's devotion to their subjects vs. an immortal struggling to grasp mortal experiences" was only vaguely implied instead of actively explored.
4) key NPCs were severely underutilized: acts 1+2 of the inazuma arc set up the resistance as key figures, only for them to do... absolutely nothing in act 3. kokomi is billed as a genius strategist. the notion that she'll accept unknown donations of supplies from an unidentifiable benefactor, no questions asked, is INSANE. frankly, i would've found the plot much more interesting if the resistance was actively colluding with the fatui to destabilize the shogunate, but no... the resistance's presence in act 3 is solely to introduce the delusions/tie the fatui back into the plot/create the emotional attachment to teppei to galvanize the traveler into confronting raiden again. the part with teppei was fine and in fact one of the highlights in the patch to me (legitimately!! heartbroken!! AT HIS LAST LINE ABOUT THE UNIFORMS!!!), but kokomi and gorou were such a non-presence... sigh. i acknowledge my pipe dream about kokomi doing sus shit with the fatui was wishful thinking, but mhy's decision to essentially lay the blame for everything on the established villains the fatui in order effectively absolve raiden of any emotional culpability/make her redeemable so players will like & roll for her is WEAK.
5) the pacing, again... (head in hands) i feel like all of the problems i complained about could have been addressed if mhy just let their story content breath a little more. i know game developers have schedules they need to stick to, but considering the complexity they introduced into inazuma and different factions present, trying to tie up all the loose strings in a single patch was a fool's errand... though it's possible that some of these things may be addressed in 2.2.
on one hand, genshin is a game designed to be played in short bursts, so it's not surprising to me that the narrative choices they make tends towards "tell, don't show" and lots of background reading (a LOT of character stories/depth/lore is only available in item descriptions), but it's still rather disappointing when you compare it to what it could be...
at the end of it, the cutscenes were beautifully animated and there were a few parts i did enjoy (sara had a nice spotlight, i stan for teppei, SCARAMOUCHE, and kazuha's moment was incredibly moving), but on the whole 2.1 felt very rushed, and the writing for raiden shogun is so all over the place it's really put a damper on my personal enjoyment for inazuma ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Summer Nights
The weather report this morning said nothing about rain. Not a shower, not a sprinkle, and even now, as you check your phone for the thousandth time, there’s no indication of the storm that is currently darkening the sky over the entire city.
You fight your way out of the subway station, pushing past people rushing down the stairs out of the deluge. As you clamber your way up through them and onto the street, it feels like you’re pushing against a wall of water.
You curse yourself and the umbrella that sits serenely dry and unused under the side table by your front door. Because according to the highest-rated, “most accurate” weather app available, it was supposed to be nothing but dry, sunny spells through the end of the week and staying warm and dry over the weekend.
You dash across the road, taking a shortcut through the park, hoping to find some relief under the canopy of trees but somehow the drops feel heavier under the leaves. Cold rivulets of water run down your neck, under the collar of your coat, completely defeating the purpose of you clutching it closed.
You’re halfway home when, as suddenly as it started this morning, the rain stops. You look up through the branches and the sky is miraculously clear, dappled sunlight falling across your face as birdsong suddenly fills the park, nothing but dripping leaves and ground puddles to indicate the previous weather. This must be the sunny spell that was previously promised.
You wipe your hand across your face to remove some of the hair clinging to it, but since your hand is as wet as everything else, it’s a losing battle. There’s just as much water on your face after wiping it, and strands of hair are now just pulled across your forehead rather than limply clinging to your cheeks. You sigh, readjusting the strap of your bag and hoping the contents inside aren’t as soaked as you are, when for the second time in less than a minute you are stunned to another stop.
Before you is a tiny, shivering, soggy ball of fur.
You could swear it wasn’t there a second ago, but it’s possible it darted out from under one of the surrounding bushes and you startled it as much as it, you.
Crouching down, you reach a hand out towards the small creature, which lifts its head, twitches its nose and shuffles towards you. It’s hard to tell under the sopping wet fur, but it doesn’t look like what you’ve seen of regular wild rabbits. Its fur is darker, but that might just be an effect of the rain. It also seems longer, but again it’s hard to tell when wet. The biggest giveaway that it’s no regular wild rabbit are the two long, floppy ears that hang down either side of its head, dragging along the path as it moves towards you.
“Hey cutie pie,” you say in as soft a voice as possible while shivering from the wet and the cold. “You don’t look like you’re from around here.”
The creature makes a full hop towards you and sniffs at your hand, and you’re almost 100% sure it’s a rabbit and not a hare. You slip your other hand beneath its tiny body and stand, clutching it to your chest. You wait to see if it’s going to resist or fight but it only snuggles into your coat. “Okay, let's get you home and dried off, and then see if we can find your owner,” you say, scratching its head gently.
Almost as soon as you tuck the tiny creature under your coat, the rain starts again, skies grey, water coming down in sheets as though it never stopped. You run the rest of the way through the park and across the road, not minding that you step into a puddle since your feet are already so wet. You barrel your way into your apartment building, stopping to catch your breath as you wait for the elevator.
As soon as you’re through your front door you carefully step out of your shoes, drop your bag and shuck off your drenched coat, vowing to come back and clean them up later. You’re so soaked your clothes cling to you, as though you weren’t wearing a coat at all, and you hit the thermostat on high as you run past on your way to the bathroom.
“Why don’t we get you all nice and snug in a towel? Let you warm up while I take a shower, hm, little buddy?”
Grabbing a hand towel, you carefully wrap the trembling creature in your arms, rubbing the wet fur carefully before placing the bundle in the sink and stripping down to jump in the hot shower.
The hot water stings your chilled skin the instant it makes contact, but it warms you up quicker than waiting around for your apartment to heat up or hiding under your duvet would. Stepping out of the shower, you wrap a warm, fluffy towel around yourself and notice the small rabbit has its eyes closed. You pick it up in its bundle, and it seems to blink in alarm at being moved.
“Awww,” you coo aloud. “Did the warm steam lull you to sleep, lil’ bun?” The rabbit looks up at you and then closes its eyes, nuzzling back into the towel covering it. You carry it into your room and place it on your bed before changing into something warm and snuggly and drying your hair. By the time you’re all done, the bunny has fallen asleep, curled up in a little cocoon of warmth.
You head back towards the front door, picking up your coat and moving your waterlogged shoes into the bathroom. You pick up your bag and hope your phone was buried deep enough inside to escape water damage. Luckily, all of the contents inside seem untouched and you send a prayer of thanks to whoever was watching over you to pull that one off.
Grabbing your phone, you quickly search for a local vet that’s still open, hitting ‘call now’ when you find a decently-reviewed one. You kneel at the foot of the bed until you’re eye level with the fluffy, dark-furred rabbit. It watches you with curiosity, whiskers twitching as your face gets closer to it.
“Hello, Park Place Animal Hospital,” a tinny voice says pleasantly through the phone. “Eric speaking, how can I help?”
“Hi,” you say cautiously. “I found a rabbit in the park, and think someone might have lost it. It doesn’t look like a wild rabbit.” Maybe it was a wild rabbit, you argue with yourself; you’re not exactly a rabbit expert.
“Can you describe it to me?” Eric asks.
“It’s got long, dark fur; black or maybe dark brown? Seems… fluffy?” you say with uncertainty. “It was drowned-looking when I found it in the storm, and it’s wrapped in a towel drying now. But its ears are long and floppy. Really long. Really, really long,” you emphasise.
There’s a chuckle on the other end of the phone. “Well it certainly doesn’t sound like a wild rabbit. Possibly a member of the lop family. It could be a lost pet, but are you sure it’s not a hybrid?”
That stops you. A hybrid? Never even crossed your mind. Why would a hybrid stay in animal form in a storm and let a stranger take them home?
“I-” you stutter. “I don’t know. I’m a mundane, I don’t know how I would be able to tell.”
“Well, scent is the easiest way to tell, but you wouldn’t be able to use that as a mundane and it’s a little late to bring it into the clinic. You could talk to it, ask it some questions.”
You frown down at the bunny. Maybe you were missing something. “I don’t speak Bunny.” You could hear Eric holding back his smile over the phone.
“But hybrids understand human speech,” he says, holding back his laughter. “Assuming you speak the same languages.” You purse your lips, eyes glancing around the room, cheeks burning in embarrassment. “Where are you right now?”
“In my bedroom,” you say. “The bunny-hybrid-whatever is wrapped in a towel on my bed and I’m kneeling on the floor at the foot of it.”
“And what is the ‘bunny-hybrid-whatever’ doing?”
“It's-” You look at the rabbit and are a little taken aback to realise it’s watching you, head raised, nose twitching inquisitively. “-watching me.”
“Okay, unwrap it and leave the room. Tell it, if it’s hungry, to follow you to the kitchen. If it’s a hybrid, it will understand and follow you.”
You blink owlishly at the creature, before nodding in determination. “Okay.” You unwrap the towel and move to the doorway. The bunny watches you leave.
“I need to make dinner. If you’re hungry, follow me. I have some veggies you can eat.” The bunny stands up on its hindquarters, giving itself a shake until its fur is sticking up in funny-looking spikes. It jumps down from the bed and lops after you as you walk towards the kitchen. You turn your attention back to Eric on the phone. “I promised the bunny veggies, and now it’s following me into the kitchen.”
“Congratulations, you have a hybrid-rabbit in your home.” Eric laughs. “It’s late now, we’ll be closing soon, but if they haven’t turned by morning you can bring them by the clinic and we’ll be able to either issue a T.o.C or take them in until we can find out where they came from.”
“T-O-C?” you ask slowly.
“Treaty of Care. Hybrids who stay in their animal form for extended periods of time need special care. It’s usually infant or adolescent hybrids born in animal form who haven’t turned for the first time yet, or hybrids hurt in animal form who need to heal before they can transform back. A Treaty of Care is usually served to a close friend or family member, but it can be anyone.”
“Even a stranger?” you ask, stopping in your tracks and looking down at the small creature by your foot. It looks up at you with big, dark eyes.
“If they didn’t fight you when you first picked them up, and they haven’t shown any signs that they want to leave, then they feel comfortable with you. At least for the time being. So the decision seems to be yours. Think about it tonight, and come in tomorrow.”
“Will do. I guess I’ll see you tomorrow,” you mutter, biting your lip and shuffling from foot-to-foot.
“No problem, have a nice evening,” Eric says politely.
“Thanks, you too.” You hang up the phone, motioning with your head towards the kitchen. “There’s apples in there.” The bunny-hybrid zooms off, hopping towards the kitchen, and you let out a little giggle at its enthusiasm.
Once there, you head to the fridge and pull out what you need to make yourself dinner, plus some extra veggies for your unintended guest. You dump them and the promised apple into the sink, making sure to give them a good wash before you start chopping things into rabbit-convenient pieces. A gentle pressure against your calf stops you, and you turn to find the long-eared bunny leaning against you as it stands on its hind legs, either trying to get a better look at what you’re doing or begging for a snack.
“Are you nosey or impatient?” you ask, and the hybrid drops to all fours before hopping around your feet. You lean down to pick it up, placing it on the counter next to you and offering it a slice of apple. Its tail—no, its entire body wiggles in appreciation as it munches on the apple slice, nibbling away with its eyes contentedly closed. You finish chopping the veggies and place a selection on a plate, setting it in front of the hybrid. The bunny hops high, kicking its back legs in excitement before diving into the pile to devour it.
With a tentative finger, you reach out to scratch behind the rabbit’s ear. To your relief, it doesn’t recoil. Encouraged by this, you settle your hand on its head and gently stroke its fluff. The hybrid leans up, nuzzling its face into the palm of your hand. You smile appreciatively, tickling the rabbit’s chin before you turn to cook your own dinner.
---
The rest of your night you spend relaxing, curled up on the sofa watching TV.  The hybrid decides to join you, settling at the opposite end away from you. Normally you wouldn’t allow a pet or an animal on the furniture, but it’s not really an animal and you’d feel bad forcing a guest to sit on the floor if there was space on the sofa. You’re second-guessing your decision, though, when the rabbit expresses opinions on your choice of entertainment, nudging the remote when it wants you to change the channel and thumping its feet when it sees something good. You spend a good twenty minutes having a one-sided argument with a creature that communicates through nothing but foot stomping and nose twitches before you come to a consensus: a superhero movie that you never got to see in the cinema. You drop the remote and the rabbit hops closer to you, shuffling into a loaf by your feet. Like that, the pair of you spend the night watching six unlikely heroes and their friends save the world from total destruction.
---
Your first real, big conundrum is when you go to bed and the little ball of fluff follows you, jumping onto your comforter.
“No. Don’t be ridiculous, you are not sharing my bed,” you try to say forcefully, but the surreal nature of what's happening makes your tone just a little bit hysterical. The hybrid simply lowers its head to the comforter, making itself smaller, lopping closer to your hand until it’s nudging it. It wiggles its head beneath your fingers. “Is this you asking for permission? No! Off! Down! Off the bed!” The creature shimmies its fluffy tail and doesn’t move an inch. “I know you can understand what I’m saying, and it’s weird,” you whine. The tail-twitching stops. Big, dark eyes blink up at you as it sits up on its haunches, front paw waving at you like it’s trying to grab you.
You can’t help but feel you’re in a pouting contest with a rabbit.
“Fine,” you huff, flopping back on the bed dramatically. The hybrid lops towards you and you turn to watch. Fluff obscures your vision as it boops you gently on the nose, and you laugh at the tickle of its fur. You shuffle under the comforter with a yawn and turn off the lamp. “Okay. Tomorrow, when I get your Treaty of Care, I’m picking you up an animal bed. This is only for tonight, because you’ve obviously had a stressful day, so don’t get used to it.” The second you say it, you know it’s a lie. You’d lose a pouting contest with that bunny every time.
---
Ten weeks later, the rabbit now has a side of the bed.
The side of the bed where his animal bed sits unused on the floor.
The vet had given the hybrid a clean bill of health, identified it as a young adult male and given you a T.o.C for as long as it wanted to stay with you. Or until you returned it. But that would never happen.
Somehow you’d just fallen into a routine; breakfast for the both of you, rushing to and from work, changing the litter box, dinner for two, TV in the evenings. And now somehow, suddenly, it’s summer. Gone are the spring storms that brought the two of you together. Now you have the stifling heat and humidity of the peak of summer.
All the windows in the apartment are open and have been for at least a week. You don’t even sleep with a cover anymore, just collapse on top of it in the flimsiest two-piece that can cover your modesty. Honestly, even that feels like too must most nights, sticking to you in the humidity. It’s so hot that the hybrid - who you had simply called “Bun” for lack of a better name - no longer lay close to you, but far on the other side of the bed, stretched out on his side, ears akimbo. The city desperately needed a storm to break the humidity.
Half way through summer, you get your wish. You flinch, even in your sleep, as the room fills with blinding, white light. The crack of thunder that immediately follows is explosive in the silence of your room thanks to all the open windows. The storm startles you awake. Turning away from the window, you bury your face in your damp, sweat-drenched pillow, just as the gentle roll of heavy rain starts to beat against the heated concrete city.
“You okay, Bun?” you ask in a sleepy, raspy voice as you reach for the small creature. But where you expect to meet soft fur, you meet soft skin, solid muscle coiled tight beneath it. It takes a second for your brain to register the foreign sensation, before your head snaps up and your eyes open. You’re used to sleeping next to a small rabbit-hybrid, but in its place is a very naked young man, curled in the fetal position. His large, terror-filled eyes stare at you.
You scream, scrambling off the bed and across the floor to press your back against the wall. The naked man shrinks in on himself when you yell, curling himself into a tighter ball. You can see just enough of him over the edge of the bed to spy a long, floppy ear drape over one of his arms.
“Bun?” you ask in a breathless voice. He lifts his head, and those eyes—those large, round eyes are just as dark as they were when he was a rabbit.
They’re the same.
He moves up onto his hands and knees, crawling cautiously across the bed to peer down at you. His fingers curl over the edge of the mattress, long ears dangling either side of his face.
“Sorry,” he whispers in a soft voice. He’s still tucked in on himself like a loaf, like he would sit when he was a rabbit. You can hear his foot tapping against the mattress; he’s agitated. “I woke up like this a little while ago, before the storm was over the city. I guess it scared me into transforming back.”
“Why didn’t you wake me?” you ask, finally getting a handle on your breathing. It’s not everyday you wake up with a naked man in your bed…or any day recently, if you’re being honest.
“You’ve had trouble sleeping because of the heat. I didn’t want to disturb your rest.” Your heart aches. You knew the hybrid living with you was friendly and sweet-tempered, but hearing it makes it difficult not to reach out and pet and coo at him like you regularly would. There’s just enough light coming in from outside for you to see him bite his lower lip in the darkness. Your heart pangs again when you notice that he has bunny teeth even in his human form.
You shift, getting to your knees and moving closer to the bed. The hybrid doesn’t stir, still huddled in on himself, floppy ears falling each side of his face. They blend seamlessly into his long, dark, wavy hair. His eyes are impossibly large, as dark as the night sky, and reassuringly familiar. Just over his shoulder, down the slope of his back, you spy a fluffy tail twitching at the base of his spine. Resolutely, your eyes snap back to his face.
“That was very kind of you,” you say softly, watching his face spread into a warm smile, front teeth prominent and pressing into his bottom lip.
“You’ve been very kind to me,” he practically whispers, and you smile in return, resisting the urge to pat him on the head. You don’t know if it’s appropriate now he’s no longer a rabbit.
“Do you have a name?”
“Jungkook, but you can keep calling me Bun, if you want. I like it,” he says, louder this time. Confidently. And you decide, screw it, you’re going to pet him. But then thunder crashes again, bright light simultaneously filling the room, and for a single, breathtaking moment, in the stark light of the storm, you take him in.
And he is absurdly beautiful.
Jungkook ducks his head. Curling into himself, one of his feet taps incessantly against the bed. You reach out, threading your fingers through his soft, chocolate brown locks until you’re rubbing his head, fingernails scratching lightly.
“Don’t worry, Jungkook, you’re safe. I’ll not let anything happen to you.” Slowly, he raises his face; eyes searching yours. “Treaty of Care, remember.” You give him a small smile. Jungkook leans forward then, pressing the tip of his nose into your cheek.
You still.
He used to do this all the time as a rabbit. It’s normal behaviour. Your research told you hybrids behave similarly to their animal counterparts. When in animal form, that is. You never expected it in human form.
His nose skims across your cheekbone until he’s rubbing it against yours. You can’t help but sigh at how incredibly intimate the act feels, and Jungkook must take that as some sort of sign, because the next thing he does is gently caress your lips with his. If it weren’t for how focused his eyes are, gauging your reaction, you might write it off as an accident. But then he does it again.
You pull back suddenly, shaking your head as though to clear it. “Let me get you something to wear,” you say, climbing to your feet and closing the blinds on your way to your draws. “I don’t know if they’ll fit you, but these are some old sweats.” You throw them to him on the bed, turning back to find him a shirt; something loose. You dig out an old t-shirt you won in a radio contest.
“Are you covered?”
“Yeah,” Jungkook says in a small voice. You turn around, extending the shirt toward him and short-circuiting when he stands at his full height. Your eyes are immediately drawn to his sculpted abdomen. All of him could be cut from marble. You stare, open-mouthed, as he shuffles foot to foot, awkwardly rubbing his elbow.
“Is that for me?” He asks finally, motioning to the garment in your hand. You nod, holding out the t-shirt emblazoned with the logo of a radio station you don’t ever recall listening to. Just as he takes it, thunder claps again and brightens the room and his arm flexes, dragging you into his personal space before you can release your hold on the fabric. His chest heaves, breaths coming heavy.
“I’m tired. Let’s sleep tonight and we’ll talk in the morning, okay?” you say softly, going for the bed. Jungkook just nods and moves towards the door. “Where are you going?” you ask, laying a hand on his arm.
“The sofa.” He ducks his head, ears hiding most of his face. “I didn’t think you’d want me sharing your bed anymore since—” he motions to his human form.
You swallow. It’s loud in the quiet of the room. “Is that why you stayed a rabbit for so long? So I’d let you stay?”
Jungkook looks up at you through his lashes; you can see him biting his lip again. “Kind of,” he mumbles, avoiding your eyes. “You were so kind to me when you found me. I was scared you’d want me to leave if I transformed back, and I wanted to stay for a little while.”
“Why?” you ask softly. “Didn’t you want to go home?” He smiles, but it looks embarrassed, his nose scrunching.
“No, not yet,” he says meekly, dipping his head. He hides behind his chocolate brown waves and long, floppy ears. “Going home is… it’s complicated.”
You lean forward, carefully reaching up to brush one of his ears aside so you can better see his eyes. His ear twitches but he doesn’t pull away, instead looking at you with all the stars of the cosmos in his eyes. “You can tell me when you’re ready,” you encourage with a soft smile. “There’s no rush. I’m also not going to make you sleep alone when you’re scared,” you say, taking him by the hand and tugging him towards the bed.
“Are you sure?” he asks, looking over your shoulder towards the bed. But his face is hopeful, so you can tell he’s only asking out of politeness.
“There’s plenty of space. And besides, you’ve had weeks to hurt me and you haven’t. I trust you.” You let go of his hand and clamber into bed.
Jungkook perks up and slips the shirt hurriedly over his head, inside out and obscuring those perfectly sculpted abs. He scrambles over the mattress to his usual side of the bed, a buck-toothed smile all over his face. His human form is impressively built, but somehow, when his head hits the pillow and he curls into a ball, he looks almost as tiny as he did in bunny form.
You lay facing him, watching him carefully. His eyes are huge and flitting between your face and the window, like he’s waiting for another crash of thunder. You sit up, reaching down to where your thin blanket had been kicked out of the way when the heatwave started, holding it up, your meaning obvious. Jungkook immediately shuffles closer, curling into your side and burying his head under your chin. It startles you for a second, your entire body going stiff, but you take a deep breath and wrap an arm around him, willing yourself to relax. You thread your fingers through his soft, brown locks, caressing his head the way you did when he was still a rabbit.
And before either of you realise the storm has already passed, you drift off together into restful sleep.

There’s a strange weight behind you when you try to shift, and a pair of strong arms keep you trapped in the bed. It takes you a moment to reorient yourself and remember what exactly you had been doing. Your naked body is still warm and content, pressed up against Iwaizumi’s broad, strong chest as he hugs you to him. When did you fall asleep? You can’t remember, but you do remember how careful the lumberjack was as he wiped you down, making sure you were clean after what he put your body through.
His embrace is enough to make you forget that today is your last day. Your mind is so jumbled that it’s hard to process what you should do next. You have to go back, you know that. You start work again in two days, putting an end to your little summer fantasy, as much as you hate it. But the pull to stay with Iwaizumi and keep pretending that this could lead somewhere is just as strong. He makes you feel safe and loved, welcomed within his arms like you belong there, even after such a short time.
A short time.
It makes you sigh, hiding your face in your hands with a groan. Are you really considering giving up your entire life—especially the job you worked for tooth and nail—for a guy you just met?
You know it’s a bad idea. You’ve told your friends the same when they were sure their new boyfriend was “the one” (and were, as expected, wrong). So what makes your situation any different? Reality smacks you in the face harder than Iwaizumi punched Oikawa. You don’t really know Iwaizumi, other than the date you had and the night you shared. And yet you had willingly given him your virginity, in front of his ex-boyfriend no less, because for just a moment, you wanted the world to stop for the both of you.
Only it can’t.
“Hey.” Iwaizumi’s voice is gravelly with sleep, his chin sharp on your shoulder as he pulls you impossibly closer. You hadn’t even noticed him wake up. “What are you thinking about so hard?”
“It’s nothing,” you smile, tilting your head back to give him a small reassuring smile. “Only that I want to say goodbye to Mattsun and Makki.”
“Hm,” Iwaizumi hums, trailing his lips over your sweaty shoulder as his hands begin to wander over your skin. You swallow, putting a hand over his wrist to intertwine your fingers, but it doesn’t stop him from swiping over your inner thighs with your joined hands. “Can you talk to them later?”
“Hajime?”
When he swipes his fingers over your sore cunt, you gasp, grinding back into him. You can feel him growing hard on your back again, and he grinds into you to make sure you know it, too.
“I want to spend a little more time together.” His voice is more than gravelly now—it’s heavy, laced with the want that is prominent against your ass. “Go later.”
His fingers pry open your folds, fingertips running over the remnants of his cum in you, gathering the slick to move up to your clit. You’re tired and sore, but you cling to him anyway, letting go of his hand to grab the back of his thigh. Your nails dig into his flesh as he starts rubbing circles, lips ghosting over your shoulder and neck until you’re murmuring at him to kiss you.
It’s an awkward angle but you make do somehow, the drags of his lips and tongue against yours much too slow and calculated for it to be just a one night ordeal. You aren’t sure what hurts more: that your body is already singing for him after such a short time, that you know this happiness and pleasure can’t last, or that when he pulls back, his eyes hold so much love and concern for you that it makes you shiver.
“If you’re too tired, we don’t have to,” Iwaizumi offers.
You wish he wouldn’t be so caring toward you, because it makes your heart flip and your decisions that much harder.
“I’m okay, promise.” You force a smile to reassure him before turning in his embrace, hands on his shoulders pushing him to lay down on the bed. He goes easily, smirking up at you as you climb into his lap and settle with your throbbing pussy over his hard cock. “Can I?”
“You don’t even have to ask,” he grunts, hands on your hips helping you grind against him.
Your cheeks burn at the sight of him below you. His chest is already heaving, skin flushed and slightly dewy from your multiple rounds. His stomach ripples with his groan when the head of his cock bumps against your clit, and you steady yourself on his chest before grabbing his cock and sinking down on it. It burns slightly thanks to your soreness, but it’s not enough to make you want to stop. Especially not when Iwaizumi’s grip tightens and he helps you squirm until he’s fully buried inside of you for the third time.
“Fuck, I could live here,” the lumberjack jokes, rocking up into you with a heavy exhale as he momentarily throws his head back at the sensation.
It’s scary how much you mean it when you immediately respond, “Me too.”
There’s something about the way he stares up at you—at your blown pupils, swollen lips, marked body thanks to his passion from earlier. It’s like he can see right through you, can read your troubling thoughts, and it makes your breath catch in your throat. It’s too vulnerable, too nerve-wracking. You’ve never had someone be able to read you like a book, and you have to tear your eyes away from him before you can reveal anymore of your secrets.
Before you can show him how much you already want to be his.
Instead you start moving, lifting and dropping your hips to sear the feeling of his cock inside you into your memory. When your walls squeeze him, he grunts, hands moving up your back and sides until he can cup your breasts. He kneads as you move, lifting his legs to fuck up into you to get even deeper. You whine, falling into him as you move faster, trying to clear your mind of the jumbled mess it’s becoming.
The bed squeaks beneath you, mixing with your pleasured sounds as Iwaizumi continues to hit that spot over and over that has you mewling and digging your nails into his pecs. Your thighs burn as you move but you don’t dare stop, not when Iwaizumi sounds so good grunting beneath you every time he ruts up.
“Can you touch yourself for me?” The question makes you squeak in surprise, and there’s a small smirk on his face when your gaze flicks up to his. “I wanna see it.”
He’s already given you plenty of orgasms that you aren’t sure you can have another, but you oblige anyway, fingers trailing down to your swollen clit. Iwaizumi exhales through his nose as you start to finger your clit, digits sliding easily thanks to the mix of your wetness and Iwaizumi’s earlier cum. His eyes are focused on the movement, cheeks red as he bounces you on his cock for his own benefit.
“Hajime,” you whine as you move faster. It feels so good with him hitting deep and your movements flushing heat through your body. Your clit throbs as you work quickly, chasing another high that surprises you with its intensity.
“Fuck yeah, that’s it,” he compliments, voice choked off with his groan. “So fucking pretty.”
His words spike pleasure in your stomach, and it doesn’t take very long until you’re whimpering and clinging to his chest, your eyes squeezed shut as you try to finish. His hands come to your ass, gripping your cheeks as he rocks you, gruff voice edging you along. Come on, you feel so fucking good, show me. It’s all too much—you snap with a hoarse cry of his name, biting your bottom lip as you shudder forward with your orgasm.
Iwaizumi helps you along, keeps you rocking as your walls spasm and clench around him, juices dripping down his cock. Only when you grow quiet in hopes to catch your breath does he flip you over so you’re beneath him again. You squeak, clinging to his shoulders when he pushes in again, your legs wrapping around his waist to bring him closer. He sets his hands next to your head and begins a brutal pace, one that has you raking your nails down his back and pushing to bring him closer.
His lips mash against yours, his tongue as fast as his sloppy thrusts. You can barely keep up, not that you mind, because Iwaizumi’s cock dragging along your sensitive walls feels too good. The way he pants and groans against your lips leaves you dizzy, and when he bites down on your shoulder with his orgasm, you cry out and tug him closer. Warmth floods you another time, and you don’t think you’ll ever get used to the way it feels like it spreads throughout your entire being, letting you panting and needy for more.
Iwaizumi collapses against you, head resting on your shoulder as a hand runs up and down your side. You’re both gasping for breath, bodies pulsing and flushed hot, and it would be a beautiful moment if not for his sheer bulk making it hard to breathe.
“Hajime, get up,” you pant, and end up laughing when he scrambles up with an apologetic smile.
“Sorry. Forgot I’m so heavy.”
“It’s all the lumberjack muscles,” you joke before pausing. You shouldn’t be joking like this, not when you have to make a decision within the next day that will leave you heartbroken either way. “Do you want to shower first…?”
Iwaizumi looks positively confused when he answers, “We can shower together.”
“Wait, no!”
Why is it so embarrassing to think about?
“You can go first, I don’t mind.”
“Give me a break, we just slept together three times,” he grumbles good-naturedly, “I don’t know what else there is to hide.” Then he grins and it nearly takes your breath away. “Afterwards, I’ll take you to town to see Mattsun and Makki.”
You want to deny him, tell him that it would be better to do it alone, but then he kisses you one more time and you forget all about it. The shower is warm, but Iwaizumi’s hands on your body are even warmer, but maybe that’s because of the way it feels so domestic. He washes your back, you wash his hair, and in between you share a few kisses that certainly mean more than what your muddled relationship status is.
Iwaizumi steps out first, giving you time to stand beneath the warm stream of water. You stand there for a short while, your entire mind blank. You know you need to do something—talk to him, make a decision, go home—but everything is so overwhelming. You’re so used to having a plan, just like you always did. School, work, busting ass to get to the top at your job. You had always had something to work for, some kind of road map to get to where you wanted to be. But whatever this is with Iwaizumi is uncharted territory for you, enough that your hands are shaking when you turn off the faucet.
Before you can even exit, there’s a knock on the door, and Iwaizumi peeks in, looking annoyed.
“Hey.”
“What’s the matter?”
“Fukunaga asked me to drive him to the city to get an ingredient he’s missing. Apparently he can’t find it here.” Iwaizumi scratches the back of his head, looking sheepish as he leans against the doorframe. “I know I said I’d take you to see Mattsun and Makki, but…”
“It’s okay!” You respond a little too quickly, grabbing a towel to wrap around yourself. “Really. I can go see them myself.”
“You sure?”
You nod a few times, like you’re trying to both convince yourself and him that it’s okay. Iwaizumi nods with an exhale, checking his phone one more time before glancing back.
“I’ll be back as soon as I can then. See you at the cafe?”
You nod your answer again, afraid that opening your mouth will make everything come tumbling out. Maybe talking to Mattsun and Makki will help sort out your feelings and give you the courage to talk to Iwaizumi. You hear him walk over to the door, his shoes shuffling out to the graveled parking area, and then his truck roars to life. You wait until he’s gone to slump against the sink, holding onto tightly to the counter.
The last few days have been a whirlwind, and the silence that lingers now feels oppressive. You try to keep busy by drying off, putting on clothes, packing your things and setting them in your car, but nothing helps. Iwaizumi’s ghost lingers everywhere, enough that it makes a headache form. So you’re in your car the next moment, heading toward the cafe you promised to meet Iwaizumi at.
When you get there, you can see Futakuchi, Mattsun, and Makki through the window. The cafe owner is telling a story as Makki laughs at it, engrossed in his phone like usual. Mattsun looks over, chuckles about something, then elbows his friend. Makki looks offended, shaking his head and arguing, while the other two laugh.
It’s a wonderful moment for them, and a bitter reminder for you.
These aren’t your friends. They have long ties, plenty of memories, and a connection to each other that goes way back. You have a few meetings, one drunken night of embarrassment, and that’s it. That’s the thought that keeps you rooted to your seat, watching the three men laugh with each other.
There’s a vibration in your pocket that snaps you out of your self-deprecating thoughts, and you check it to see another headache. Your co-workers name blazes back at you, a reminder that tomorrow is your last day of freedom before working again.
You pick it up after swallowing your sigh. “Hello?”
“Hey, sorry to bug you.”
No, you’re not, you want to answer but keep silent. You never would have talked to her like this before, but something about your mood is sour now thanks to the situation.
“It’s fine. What’s wrong?”
“That interview you did with the Instagram influencer. I, uh… accidentally deleted the file? But it has to go out by tomorrow morning. Do you have a copy?”
“On my computer.”
She sighs happily. “Perfect! Can you send it to me?”
“No, I’m not in town. My computer’s at my house.”
You can practically hear her sob through the phone. “God, our boss is going to kill me. I’m so screwed. Is there any way you can get it?”
You sigh, setting your head down on the steering wheel. This is how it’s always been: you fixing for other people’s mistakes, giving in to their pleading and picking up their slack for them. That’s the reason you haven’t been able to have a vacation in years—and even on your first vacation away, you’re still cut short with shit that isn’t your fault.
“Um.”
“Please!” She pleads desperately. “Please, I’m begging. I’ll make it up to you, I promise!”
They never do. Two weeks away from the office has allowed you to see that clearly. You glance back up, staring at Iwaizumi’s friends laughing in the cafe, a cold shiver running down your back. It feels like you don’t belong anywhere—not inside with the men, not at your workplace anymore. No matter where you are, it feels so lonely. Iwaizumi is the only person to have made you feel differently, but yet here you are, still on the outside of his life, looking through the glass without an easy way inside.
“...Okay,” you eventually answer, your heart sinking at your co-worker’s relieved sigh. “I’ll e-mail it to you in a few hours.”
“Perfect! You’re a lifesaver. When you come in tomorrow, we can—”
“I’m not coming in tomorrow,” you remind her quickly, annoyance beginning to creep into your tone. “I still have one more day of my vacation.”
“Yeah, but—”
“Release the interview as scheduled,” you cut in again. “I already did everything anyway, it’s ready, so there should be no issues or reason to call me.”
“Alright, alright,” your co-worker grumbles. “Touchy.”
You don’t even bother giving her a response. You end the call without saying goodbye, throwing the phone into the passenger’s seat to be forgotten. Is this what you’re going back to? More stress, more headaches, more work? You glance behind you in the rear-view mirror. You can’t see it, but even the thought of Iwaizumi’s cabin gives you another headache.
It’s all too much. You need space.
Without saying goodbye to the three of them, you set the car in reverse and slowly drive away.
You don’t look at it, but your cell phone looms in your peripheral vision anyway, begging to be used. You have Iwaizumi’s number from the rental—you should call him and tell him you’re leaving. Tell him what the last two weeks meant to you before going. Promise that you’ll come back soon, because you want to see him again, because he means so much to you already. But then a lingering feeling eats away at your confidence. What if he doesn’t reciprocate? What if it was just something fun for him, to help him get over Oikawa and get Oikawa out of his life for good? You don’t think he would do that, but honestly, you don’t really know him well, do you?
Iwaizumi’s cabin approaches, and you hit the brakes to slow down even more. Should you wait for him? Go back to the cafe and forget about your coworker? Is leaving like this the right decision? It will be dark soon, meaning there’s not much time left to make a decision. Shakily, you get out of the car, the key to the cabin tight in your hand. You stare at the “Welcome!” mat in front of the doorway for a few minutes, before slowly bending down and setting the key underneath.
It’s better this way, you think as you turn back to your car and don’t look back.
But that doesn’t stop the tears from slipping down your cheeks the second Iwaizumi’s cabin is swallowed by the thick trees, becoming only a memory you’ll never forget.
