Soft pinks, dreamy greens, and hearts everywhere—this page was inspired by Vladimir Nabokov’s beautiful words about love, thoughts, and even a sunflower’s smile. 🌻✨
I’m in love with how it turned out! If you want to create your own romantic junk journal pages, you can find the heart images I used in my Etsy shop!

By the end of the year, there will be a total of 176 A24 films released (there’s a few others announced but have no official release date yet). Although I’ve seen a nice handful of them already, I want to do a movie challenge. Watch one a day, just focus and enjoy it, no phones or scrolling. Keep track of them in my book and film journal. That’s 6 months of content!
I’ve also updated my reading list which now has 99 new additions and they’re all fiction, which I hardly ever read but after nearly a year straight of solely informational nonfiction, I want to mix it up and read much more of my favorite but extremely neglected genre, which is literary fiction.
I’ve just been watching a lot of YouTube lately and I want to get out of the junk content rut and back to the stuff that makes me feel good.

lenormand cards: key phrases and an example of a card combo (part 3)
this is just a beginners guide to the lenormand. these are key phrases that come to mind when i think of the cards - NOT how they should be directly applied. they needs to be thought about situationally - the card / when it is in specific combos can change or alter its meaning in a reading.

I was also reading this real life story from a chap who used to work at one of the ‘top literary journals’. I can’t remember which one it was, which journal, but it was one of those ‘big names’ that many writers dream of being included in. And the chap was saying that he basically got paid to reject stories, day in and out. That he and his colleagues would eat pizza and drink beer. And that they would read out the stories they thought were crap, and laugh at them. He said, “Some of them were good, but we would axe them anyway.” And this person just sounded so cynical. And I thought, ‘What makes this person a valid critic?’ If he’s drunk and eating junk food and getting paid for it, what makes him literary? Why is he the one that decides what goes in the journal? It was cynical and disturbing. But it’s also important to remember that many of these judges, who can sever or accept your work, are not creative people themselves. They are entitled cynics and critics. And the fact that this man openly admitted these things and still seemed to find them funny, just kinda said it all.

I’m an avid reader. I long ago exhausted the resources of our small public library, and I have neither the resources nor the opportunity to get into the city often enough to supply myself with the written fodder my habit requires. A few years back, I found another source of books and I started my career as a literary vulture. I go to estate sales and buy boxes of books for three dollars, six dollars, even ten dollars if it’s a big box. I drag my carload of boxes home and sift through the treasures, splitting them into three piles. One is for me, the books I’m going to read. There are probably three books, on the average, in every box deemed interesting enough to feed my appetite, a bargain at the price. I sort out the serious books, texts, learned treatises, stuff like that and donate them to the library. The rest I give to Elizabeth’s sister who runs an antique junk shop off the highway. People who stop by Sally’s will buy almost anything and she needs every penny.

the long awaited ebook of JUNK VOLUME II is available now! ideally it should be viewed on a computer or other large device, but if you are using mobile i recommend that you flip your phone sideways so that two pages are visible at a time (i designed some of the pieces to intentionally be viewed side by side)
as far as physical copies: im doing the pre-orders of paperbacks in BATCHES so i won’t start production until later in the week but i will drop the link soon… everything will also be crossposted into the new website (which will also drop at the same time as the pre-order link) 🤍🤍🤍

have you ever heard of devil like me by rainbow kitten surprise ? well, it describes AGUSTIN BAEZA to a tee ! the forty-three year old novelist + paranormal investigator was spotted browsing through the stalls at portobello road market last  sunday, do you know him ? would you say he is more closed off or more empathetic instead? anyway, he reminds me of a half-empty jar of instant coffee with a stained spoon balanced on the lid , a tangled rosary in a small, glass catch-all bowl by the door that’s buried under keys and spare change and pocket lint , a typewriter and an ashtray on a cluttered dinette table covered in junk mail , a rusted tin box full of old photos and polaroids dating back decades. maybe you’ll bump into him soon !
Tumblr media
STATS.
name: agustin santiago baeza ( birth name ) / santiago flores ( pen name ) gender & pronouns: cisgender male / he + him orientation: panromantic pansexual age: forty-three date of birth: 13 october, 1979 zodiac: ☼ libra ☽ pisces ↑ sagittarius occupation: horror novelist + paranormal investigator positive traits: pragmatic + articulate + empathetic + adaptable negative traits: secretive + melancholy + sardonic + critical
HISTORY.
agustin packed up all of his notebooks and journals in a duffel bag with a toothbrush and a few pairs of clothes and left his home and his life behind the day he turned eighteen with no destination in mind other than somewhere else. he doesn’t talk much about the life he left back in los angeles, but you’ll hear him mention in interviews that he wouldn’t have made it where he was today if he hadn’t run away, left his parents, his family behind. he backpacked around from city to city on the west coast for a few months before he ran out of money; then he opted to try to join the peace corps, and when his application was denied, he sought out other volunteer opportunities that might allow him to travel and to try and do good, to make the world better. at the encouragement of a friend he’d made by chance when he left los angeles, agustin found himself at a wildlife rehabilitation center and reserve in guatemala. he spent several years there, engaging with the community and working with a team to protect guatemalan rainforests and the animals in them.
during his stay in guatemala, agustin wrote his first full novel, a creature horror and psychological thriller inspired by stories he used to read when he was younger. he was twenty-four when he returned to the united states and met with a publisher who told him that he had potential but needed refinement. a fair point, he had to admit; he didn’t have a formal education beyond high school, only what he’d picked up from the many books he’d read over the years, but he wanted to write. he loved his volunteer work, but that wasn’t his passion, it wasn’t what fueled him. so he went back to school on a scholarship for his philanthropic work, to study the art of writing and literature.
agustin wrote while he was enrolled in university; his education was paid for, but to make ends meet as far as living expenses, he published a series of rather adult fantasy romance novels — an easier market to get into, he quickly learned, and a lucrative enough one if you knew what you were doing ( and he did, apparently ) — that still have a following to this day. if you happen to follow him on social media or attend a book signing, you’ll notice he doesn’t often bring up his spicier literary phase, but there are still fans who will show up with a copy of crushed crimson looking for an autograph.
it wasn’t until after he graduated that agustin had the time to devote to working on horror again, but he fell back into the genre as swiftly as if he’d never left. this time around ( and with his slightly off-center from mainstream success ) it wasn’t difficult to land a publisher, and after reworking and releasing his first novel, he found success with a horror trilogy that landed him on the new york times’ best-seller list and won him several awards and accolades. he’s since published countless others and developed an almost cult-like following of fans who look forward to his releases and who he frequently tries to engage with online ( even if he does use social media like a dad )
agustin has also tried to use his success and online presence to further a cause close to his heart, wildlife preservation in south america. he formed his own non-profit charity organization to raise awareness and funds for the rain forests, specifically in guatemala, but as of now they’ve helped raise money for several south american countries. he’s done fundraisers and raffles with gifts for fans including one-on-one time with him and collaborated with other authors on the project as well.
in recent years, agustin has taken a step back from writing ; he still plans to continue, but he’s decided to take a break from the several projects he’s been working on to pursue hobbies of interest instead, and as of late, has spent a vast majority of his time researching and investigating the paranormal with his best friend, local herbalist circe delfino.
MISCELLANEA.
he absolutely adores horror conventions, and is always humbled and delighted to see the number of people who will come out to talk horror and literature and monsters with him. well, with santiago flores, but that’s close enough. even now that he’s taken a break from writing, he’ll still show up when there’s one happening locally.
he’s left-handed and as a result, curses the existence of spiral-bound notebooks and will often write with pencil over pen so he doesn’t smear the ink.
has had many interviews and discussions about his life over the years because of the popularity of his books and later his foundation, but he doesn’t talk at all about what his life was like before he left home at eighteen and of the countless publications he’s been involved in, there’s not a single mention of his family.
WANTED CONNECTIONS.
friends. agustin tries to be sociable enough ! he enjoys good conversations and dinner parties and understands that in order to do that, he needs to have friends. these are folks he’s comfortable enough with that they’ve got an open invitation into his home, and he’s always looking for new and engaging things to do.
writing pals. maybe they hold each other accountable for actually putting in effort and upping their word count, or maybe they’re each others’ go-to excuses when they know they’re not going to be getting anything done ? maybe it’s someone else with success in the industry, or maybe they’re friends introduced by a writer’s workshop or something ? either way, they’re here for the ebb and flow of the creative process, and also plenty of distractions, of course.
editor / publisher. someone who’s been on agustin’s ass to get writing again because people are expecting things from him, he can’t just spend the rest of his life on this little ghost-hunting side-quest. ( their words likely, not agustin’s ― he rather enjoys poking around all of london’s most famous haunts, thank you. ) i picture this very much a friendly companionship, but with quite a bit of bickering and arguing.
fans. we’re not talking like, die-hards here. he gets enough of those on twitter. but i think it would be fun for him to get to have a conversation with someone who’s read and enjoyed his books, maybe who’s curious about when the next one’s going to be released? maybe they’ve even got an idea or two of their own!
critics. see above, but make it less wholesome. maybe your muse doesn’t think horror is a worthwhile genre, or maybe it’s their favorite genre and they just so happen to think that santiago flores should’ve stuck to romance novels where he belonged. either way, they’ve got an opinion about agustin’s books, and now they’ve got an opportunity to share it.
literally anything! agustin is the loml and i just want all of the things for him, so if you’ve got thoughts, i’ll hear them.

reading update
it hasn’t quite been a month since the last time I did one of these, but I feel like I’ve read A LOT OF BOOKS since then and also - get this - there’s absolutely nothing stopping me from posting whenever I want.
so, what have I been reading?
Something That May Shock and Discredit You (Daniel M. Lavery) - true facts: I didn’t like this book quite as much as I hoped I would, and that’s okay. Lavery is always clever and funny and delightful and if he sometimes deals in Biblical or literary allusions that fail to land that says more about my points of reference than any of his shortcomings as a writer. there were bits that I vibed with very hard and bits that made me feel as though I were simply along for the ride while an interesting friend spoke with great enthusiasm about things I have very little experience with, and the latter is rarely an unpleasant feeling.
More Than Organs (Kay Ulanday Barrett) - as I mentioned on my last book post, I’ve had the great pleasure of meeting Kay in person and spending a day helping him out at a conference hosted at the university where I work. I tried very hard to infuse the memory of his warm, gentle energy into the book, but I’m coming to the conclusion that poetry might simply work better on me when the author is reading it out loud.
Freshwater (Akwaeke Emezi) - delightful, twisty, beautiful, and sharp. Emezi does some really exhilarating things with storytelling and words, and I’m very much looking forward to reading their other novels.
I’m Afraid of Men (Vivek Shraya) - an absolutely excellent piece of short nonfiction. the best way I can think of to praise this is that if I were designing a syllabus for an introductory gender and women’s studies class and I was trying to make it less boring than my own introductory gender and women’s studies classes, Shraya would perhaps be my very first pick. kindly read before the first day of class, as it’s not even 100 pages long.
Sister Mine (Nalo Hopkinson) - as far as I’m concerned Hopkinson is a genius of short fiction, and her collection Falling In Love With Hominids resides in probably my top two short fiction collections I’ve ever read. Sister Mine, a full-length novel, didn’t pan out for me so well; it felt simultaneously too long and too underdeveloped most of the way through, littered with concepts that would have been more satisfyingly explored with a much tighter word count. c’est la vie.
The Deep (Rivers Solomon) - speaking of concepts that can be explored better with fewer words! an excellent little novella that manages to cover a vast story - collective trauma, an apocalyptic human-mermaid war, a bit of romance, the healing ability of community accountability - in precious little time, all handled with deft sensitivity. a very satisfying novella!
Republic of Lies: American Conspiracy Theorists and their Surprising Rise to Power (Anna Merlan) - if you’re not familiar with Anna Merlan’s journalism I’d recommend looking into it; she covers conspiracy theorists and New Age healing subcultures with a very readable mix of thorough research and wry observation. while her book lacks a cohesive thesis statement beyond “rampant conspiracism bad,” it’s impeccably written and I’ll never cease to be impressed by Merlan’s willingness to walk into the middle of crowds of people jumped up on blatantly anti-Semitic theories and casually announce that she is Jewish.
what am I reading right now?
Junk (Tommy Pico) - although poetry hasn’t really worked out yet, Tommy Pico made an appearance on a podcast I like, the Sporkful, that seriosuly sparked my interest. I’m still not sure I totally get Junk, but it’s very different than either of the other poetry collections I’ve tried so far in a way that I find very enjoyable.
My Lady’s Choosing: An Interactive Romance Novel (Kitty Curran and Larissa Zageris) -  yeah, this is kind of a wild departure for me. but for awhile now I’ve had a growing sense that 1.) I need to inject a bit of lightness into my literary diet and 2.) I should be exploring the romance genre, which is perpetually overlooked and sneered at despite counting some really lovely-seeming authors among its ranks. I was curious about this one as soon as it hit the shelves at the library last year, because a choose-your-own adventure romance seems like a very fun and novel concept. I’ll be starting it on the ride to work today, and will hopefully report back asap.

What a strange experience it is to comb through Facebook. Having nothing else to really say or post, I became inactive on the site around 2016 or so, and migrated to other social media platforms, other venues to keep tabs on friends I had lost contact with for years now.
To scroll through Facebook now, given enough time and space and distance, is akin to the feeling of going through old forums to see what a teenaged version of me was thinking and feeling. Which is to say, the version of myself that I had seemed on Facebook felt unrecognizable to the me of now.
I had read once in the intro to a book about Nick Hornsby's reads of the month that the accumulation of unread books was simply a statement on the kind of people we aspired to be. It came to mind as I saw posts from pages, from news sites and literary journals and social causes that I hadn't given a thought about for years, that I was once a person that wasn't utterly disengaged with the world at large.
There was also a lot of targeted ads. I was astonished at the specificty of it all. I remember a time where the targeted ads would be advertising junk that would have never caught my eye, and now they were giving me suggestions for my interests that not only appealed to me as a consumer, but gave me insight into products that I had never even heard of. I know that being so inundated with the internet in the past resulted in an algorithm that knows far, far too much of me. Sometimes I wish I could go back, advise myself. Stop liking so many pages! Stop using the same terms for the SEO bros to target you! A monster uncoils itself, it's tendrils dedicated to predicating my behavior, advocating for dumb impulse purchases in the middle of the night.
With some kind of growing desperation I scrolled faster and faster, hoping to find something familiar to dwell on. I would see an Asian baby, wondering why do I have a baby as a friend on Facebook, only to realize that it was a baby from a friend of a friend met at a college party. In fact, if I managed to stumble upon a Facebook post not created by a corporation or company, it happened to be either a baby or a wedding. It was then that I realized why the few, random people I sort of knew but not really continue to engage with Facebook: it was simply a means to update their families, old people that now seem to be the target audience for Zuckerberg, on how their adult lives are going.
Not posting on anything or anywhere, not having an update on how my life is going, often disappearing from text message chains for months at a time, it feels as if I'm a ghost in the digital world. But rather it would be more fitting to say that I'm seemingly trapped in a liminal space, and without a commitment to anyone or anything, will continue this wandering, aimless life of mine.
