Shiver - Junji Ito Review

Shiver is a short story collection by Japanese horror manga artist Junji Ito. I first stumbled onto Junji Ito through the viral "Th-This is my hole. It was made for me!" meme that was popular around the internet a few years back.

I was fascinated by that image and it led me to reading the story it was based on "The Enigma of Amigara Fault" which is one of my all-time favorite horror stories, long or short. Shiver is now the third complete manga I've read by Junji Ito and to date is probably my favorite. It doesn't reach the highs of Amigara Fault, but I think it's really solid. According to the notes, it seems like Ito gets a spark of an idea and builds off the initial idea, sometimes putting several ideas together over the course of a span of time. The initial hooks are always interesting and pretty original though, even if the results of the story don't always quite land. With some quick pitches; my favorite stories in this collection are Used Record - What if there was a song of the dead and someone alive heard the song? What would that do to the person who is alive? Fashion Model - No comment. Just this image.

Hanging Blimp - People all around Japan are bizarrely committing suicide, hanging themselves, fashioning things into a noose. Shortly after their deaths, bizarre blimp like floating heads with what look like balloon strings show up around the country and begin chasing people. Marionette Mansion - Haruhiko's family travels around Japan putting on puppet shows. One of the puppets frightens Haruhiko's friend Kinuko, the puppets name is "Jean-Pierre" and it seems like there may be more to Jean-Pierre. Is Haruhiko's family controlling Jean-Pierre, or is Jean-Pierre controlling them? The Long Dream - Probably my favorite story in the collection. What if when we slept, an infinite amount of time could pass in our dreams? We could live hours, days, months, years or even several lifetimes worth? What would that do to our bodies? What would it mean for us as a species?

Greased - Haha this one got me to groan in disgust audibly, so I have to give it a nod. Yui and her family run a barbeque shop and live in an apartment above the shop. From poor ventilation in both the shop and apartment, there is a thick, heavy, filmy layer of grease covering everything. The grease gets heavier as time goes on and begins to effect Yui's family, specifically her brother Goro and ugh at what happens lol. Overall, a really solid collection of stories. Really enjoyed it!

DBD x Junji Ito Fun Facts:

The collab is technically with the Netflix Junji Ito animation, and not just Junji Ito in general. It’s why some characters were specifically chosen over others (such as Uzumaki characters) and why this Tomie design was chosen over others.

Tomie and Miss Fuchi have new voices and sound effects. This was likely done because Artist and Spirit’s voices and sound effects wouldn’t fit the characters. (Artist screeching like a bird and being inky themed doesn’t really suit Fuchi. Spirit being ghostly and having glass/sword sound effects wouldn’t fit Tomie.)

Like with the AOT collab, the killer skins are Legendary’s meaning they actually are the character (Miss Fuchi and Tomie) but the survivors skins are costumes so they’re canonically the survivors dressed like Junji Ito characters.

Adding onto the last point, some killer skins here are actually not Legendary’s. Trickster, Dredge and Twins skins aren’t Legendary meaning it’s the characters dressed like the Junji Ito characters and not the characters themselves.

There’s some interesting lore regarding the characters who aren’t actually Junji Ito characters. Again, Fuchi and Tomie are just Fuchi and Tomie, but Trickster isn’t Souichi. All of the skins save Tomie and Fuchi, are related to the original characters lore in some way shape or form.

Trickster’s skin relates to Souichi’s Tricks. It compares Ji-Woon’s mischievous and sadistic childhood to Souichi’s similarly mischievous and sadistic childhood.

Kate’s ballerina skin relates to Kate’s troubled history with ballet, and the Entity likely dressing her up like a doll to toy with her emotionally.

Yun-Jin’s skin is based on a Junji Ito idol who killed herself. The relation here is that in Yun-Jin’s lore an up and coming idol also suddenly died (due to unknown reasons.) A further connection is that in Hanging Balloons (the story the outfit is from), the idols death causes copycat suicides, whilst Yun-Jin’s lore states that she’s upset because people around her keep dying, similar to the protagonist in Hanging Balloons.

Twin’s skin relates to the dark familial past shared by both the Twins and the Hikizuru siblings from Junji Ito.

The Dredge’s skin is very similar to all their other skins. The Dredge typically forms in an amalgamation of traumatic events, and the story of the Mysterious Tunnel is one such traumatic event with many fatalities, it only makes sense the Dredge would take form here.

Yui’s dressed like Tsukiko from the Tomie story. The connection here is that Tsukiko’s boring and bland school uniform is similar to what Yui used to wear and reflected her boring school life, before she got into racing. Honestly this connection is probably the weakest, but they clearly didn’t have a lot of survivor skins to work with (that and Tsukiko had survived against Tomie so they probably wanted to incorporate her.)

An interesting detail with Fuchi’s skin is that her hands are inky just like the Artist however her feet are normal and she’s wearing shoes, unlike Artist.

Similar deal with the Tomie skin. Despite being a skin for Spirit, her limbs are reattached. She has two heads just like Tomie in the story “Photograph��� but is barefoot like the Spirit.

Despite not being a part of the story “Photograph”, Tomie has hair coming out of her second head. This is likely a reference to the story “Hair” where a girl put Tomie’s hair into her face and it got stuck there and eventually Tomie’s hair began to grow out of every pore. It was likely used here specifically because of Spirit’s floaty hair.

Fuchi’s weapon is unique with the other Artist weapons. All of the Artists weapons are made of ink to blend in with her hands. Fuchi’s weapon is a rusty/bloody blade, and is not made of ink.

According to the skin descriptions, Fuchi was taken by the Entity after eating the film crew from her story “Fashion Model.”

Tomie’s skin doesn’t specify when she was taken, however since her skin is from “Photograph” it can be assumed that was when she was taken.

Dredge isn’t a Legendary skin, however they is taking the form of the Mysterious Tunnel incident, so they likely manifested during the tragedy.

As stated earlier, all the other skins aren’t the actual Junji Ito characters, and thus wouldn’t be taken by the Entity.
