Shiver - Junji Ito Review
Shiver is a short story collection by Japanese horror manga artist Junji Ito. I first stumbled onto Junji Ito through the viral "Th-This is my hole. It was made for me!" meme that was popular around the internet a few years back.
I was fascinated by that image and it led me to reading the story it was based on "The Enigma of Amigara Fault" which is one of my all-time favorite horror stories, long or short. Shiver is now the third complete manga I've read by Junji Ito and to date is probably my favorite. It doesn't reach the highs of Amigara Fault, but I think it's really solid. According to the notes, it seems like Ito gets a spark of an idea and builds off the initial idea, sometimes putting several ideas together over the course of a span of time. The initial hooks are always interesting and pretty original though, even if the results of the story don't always quite land. With some quick pitches; my favorite stories in this collection are Used Record - What if there was a song of the dead and someone alive heard the song? What would that do to the person who is alive? Fashion Model - No comment. Just this image.
Hanging Blimp - People all around Japan are bizarrely committing suicide, hanging themselves, fashioning things into a noose. Shortly after their deaths, bizarre blimp like floating heads with what look like balloon strings show up around the country and begin chasing people. Marionette Mansion - Haruhiko's family travels around Japan putting on puppet shows. One of the puppets frightens Haruhiko's friend Kinuko, the puppets name is "Jean-Pierre" and it seems like there may be more to Jean-Pierre. Is Haruhiko's family controlling Jean-Pierre, or is Jean-Pierre controlling them? The Long Dream - Probably my favorite story in the collection. What if when we slept, an infinite amount of time could pass in our dreams? We could live hours, days, months, years or even several lifetimes worth? What would that do to our bodies? What would it mean for us as a species?
Greased - Haha this one got me to groan in disgust audibly, so I have to give it a nod. Yui and her family run a barbeque shop and live in an apartment above the shop. From poor ventilation in both the shop and apartment, there is a thick, heavy, filmy layer of grease covering everything. The grease gets heavier as time goes on and begins to effect Yui's family, specifically her brother Goro and ugh at what happens lol. Overall, a really solid collection of stories. Really enjoyed it!
4/5

I'm logged in on the BSL3 computer and there's something creepy going on so I'm gonna tell you about it while my cells spin
Okay it's hard to type with two layers of gloves on but here we go: the BSL3 (biosafety level 3) lab is a facility at my work that's basically a separate lab with higher security and a higher level of safety and containment procedures required because we work with more dangerous pathogens in here. Right now it's just my group working with the bacteria that causes tuberculosis, but they used to work with HIV in here as well. Anyway, this place is a windowless sterile bunker that's only accessible through a door locked by both badge and password. If the door is open for longer than 8 seconds the police come. And they really do, it's happened to me.
The week of Thanksgiving, someone came in to the BSL3 and signed in as Roger from Housekeeping (we think, the handwriting is messy). They logged their sign-in time but not their sign-out. The woman in charge of maintaining this facility saw it a few days later and was confused, because no one from housekeeping has badge access. The scanner keeps a record of everyone who goes in, so she asked everyone who accessed that day if we brought someone from housekeeping in with us. None of us had.
Her next thought was, is someone dead in there? So she checked all the rooms and found nothing unusual or disturbed. Also, no housekeeping had been done. We've been trying to get housekeeping out here for weeks and they won't answer us about this or housekeeping in general.
So the question is: who is Roger? How did he get in? Why did he come in? And when did he leave? And, seriously, how did he get in, because even the hallway is in a remote area. If he somehow did manage to sneak in behind one of us in 8 seconds, we definitely would have seen it. But the higher-ups don't seem concerned, for some reason. They probably think one of us is lying about letting someone unauthorized in.
We were talking about this earlier today and I joked I was gonna have a great time plating today knowing Roger is still lurking in the facility somewhere. We laughed and the woman in charge went in ahead of me to test the eyewash stations. As I was suiting up, she comes out and says "By the way, I realized I forgot to check the storage closet, but I just did, and there's nothing wrong in there either."
Then she said, "So Roger is gone unless he's hiding in a cupboard somewhere."
I had a brief flash in my mind, a Junji Ito-style illustration of an emaciated man peeking out of a cabinet at me, or out from under the autoclave cart, or through the tiny window in the door, and I know it's ridiculous but I'm extremely creeped out right now lol
So, if I never return, Roger got me.

Junji Ito and the Horror of Compulsion
[The following essay contains MAJOR SPOILERS; YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!]
At first glance, the premise of Junji Ito’s “Smashed” is almost comically absurd. The plot revolves around a group of youths that become hooked on a sweet, syrupy substance that an acquaintance smuggled back to Japan following a recent excursion to the jungles of South America. Unfortunately, every time they partake of the nectar, they risk a brutal demise: abruptly crushed flat by some invisible telekinetic force, reduced to grotesque pancakes of blood, hair, bones, teeth, and leathery flesh. Escaping this grim (and darkly humorous) fate should be a simple enough matter—just quit eating the darn stuff! Alas, any other food or liquid that they attempt to ingest is utterly revolting (or so they insist), tasting of ash and dirt. Thus, they continue to greedily, gluttonously consume their newfound ambrosia, repeatedly gambling on immediate short-term gratification—a sucker bet that inevitably leads to disaster. Not even the more sympathetic characters are immune to karmic retribution (indeed, the most amoral among them survives the longest); all succumb to their base urges—and pay dearly for their transgressions.
Ultimately, it’s a rather silly story. Ito himself admits that the development process wasn’t terribly complex; what if, he essentially wondered, humans were akin to the humble mosquito—voraciously seeking nourishment, in constant peril of being swatted into oblivion. Nevertheless, the tale’s deeper implications lingered in my memory, haunting me. Were the protagonists literally deprived of their agency by paranormal means? Or was their fatal addiction comparatively mundane in nature, indistinguishable from the sort of chemical dependency one might encounter in our own reality? Did a malevolent otherworldly entity manipulate their actions? Or were they doomed by some self-destructive impulse engraved directly into mankind's collective unconscious—a counterintuitive yet irrepressible instinct as inherent and immutable as the need to breathe?
This theme of compulsion recurs throughout Ito’s work (e.g., “Used Record”, “Hair”, “The Enigma of Amigara Fault”), and the ambiguity surrounding it is consistently compelling. The author wisely resists the temptation to provide concrete answers; the true horror, after all, lies in that very uncertainty.

The Art of Dread: A Case for Skinamarink
The most common criticisms I’ve heard of the indie horror flick Skinamarink comes in two flavors. One says that it needed tighter editing and could’ve been about half an hour shorter. The harsher sentiment is that it was just outright too slow and boring. At the theater viewing I went to, the guy sitting next to us fell asleep. I overheard another group laughing about how one of their own was jostled awake halfway through because she also faded out at the beginning.
Me, I was riveted to this movie. I could not tear my eyes away. From moment one, I knew I was about to enter a different theatrical experience. So I sank back into my seat and allowed myself to be abducted. And I came out of this movie unable to get it out of my craw.
I’m a horror movie buff. I love a good creepshow. My tastes vary, but in general, the kind of horror I enjoy is either campy or artful. Either give me a good time, or really put me through the wringer. Skinamarink is firmly in the latter. It is art in the most literal sense. As such, it won’t be for everyone, but everyone should watch it at least once.
***From here on, this will be a spoiler-rich discussion. I’m going to get into themes around this movie. If you haven’t seen it already, I really, really, really cannot stress enough that you should go into it knowing next to nothing. It’s a movie to be experienced, and the less you know, the more it will destroy you on its way out. So go submit yourself to it before you read on, and be warned.
Also, CW for discussions about abuse and extremely doom-pilly thoughts.
As we left the theater, I overheard a girl Cinema Sins-style dinging certain details to her friends. “All I could think about was the kid’s rations,” she said. One of them laughed at her a bit, teasing her about her use of the word rations. What I thought as I passed her was, Girlfriend, that’s all it took to take you out of the movie??
Someone that literal-minded was never going to enjoy the experience of watching Skinamarink. The best way to approach a movie like this is best described in this clip from The Big Chill:
youtube
This movie is about the vibes. The plot is extremely minimal, basically summed up in the one line synopsis displayed on every showtime: “Two children wake up in the middle of the night to find their father is missing, and all the windows and doors in their home have vanished.” That is the movie right there. You literally sit and watch that idea unfold.
It’s similar to the work of Junji Ito in sense that the main character is the concept itself. The actual people on screen aren’t really the main focus, nor is any sort of identifiable plot. Instead, the film places you inside itself almost existentially. The camera shows shots of things around the rooms of the house. Light fixtures. Toys on the floor. Angles of doors and baseboards. The impenetrable darkness of unlit interiors. All weird, off-putting angles that look like you just lied down on the floor and are staring up at nothing in particular. Dialogue is delivered off-screen, and most of the action is done through shots of feet or objects moving in and out of frame. Most of the time, all you can hear are the sounds of movement, and through most of the film, you’re never really sure who exactly is moving. There is no soundtrack, no music except through diegetic noise, and there’s a quality to the way the sounds were recorded that has a strange uncanniness. It’s very similar to the experience of watching the work of Jan Svankmajer, a Czech stop-motion director known for his creepy surrealist style. Nothing ever sounds or looks quite right.
Due to the VHS effect layered over the entire film, every shot, especially the darkest ones, becomes a constant source of anxiety. I was reminded of an Hbomberguy video produced about five years ago about the effect VHS has on the viewing experience. I highly recommend watching the whole thing, but for a brief snippet, the relevant part for what I’m talking about is between 10:55 - 12:30.
youtube
Skinamarink utilizes this visual to constantly trick your eyes into thinking something might be moving when it isn’t. Or is it? You stare at the screen long enough, and the low-res quality just on its own begins to look like a mass of squirming maggots. Even when nothing’s there, something’s there, and it creates a strange constant anxiety that kept me on the edge of my seat the entire runtime.
This quality is the reason why I think that cutting the movie with tighter editing would be doing it a disservice. Yes, it’s a slow burner. Even while I was watching it I knew this one will be a hard to get through a second time. It is an incredibly slow movie. But the slowness is part of the point. You stare into the void, and see what you need to see. If it were trimmed down, that would give you relief, and this movie is not here to relieve you. It forces you into a headspace where you are dragged into watching babies exist in the presence of an evil that is never seen or named. The whole time, you keep up hope for an end. You keep thinking, where’s this going? You watch this horrible thing torment them and mutilate them and do whatever it wants with them, and you keep on watching, holding out on that hope for a plot will come along and save them, and bring some salient point. It is only towards the end, with maybe fifteen or twenty minutes to go, when the words 572 DAYS comes up on screen, that you realize this movie was never going to give you hope.
This is the art of dread. It’s reminiscent of the classic short story I Have No Mouth, And I Must Scream (in the case of Kaylee, it’s literally that). It’s that idea of being completely helpless before a power that can and will do whatever terrifying thing it wants, and what it wants is to hurt you, and there is no escape. There is no death, there is no time, there is no relief. There is only a cycle of pain and suffering, as seen in the shot of the blood splatters that appear and disappear only to reappear again as Kevin screams while this evil fucking thing laughs. It’s horrible and gruesome, and its effectiveness relies entirely on having spent the last hour and a half watching this inevitable doom slowly crawl towards these children from the dark.
I walked out with two interpretations of this. One is the most literal, that being of domestic abuse. Children by default have no power, and if their parents hurt them, they have no way to escape. There’s heavily implied tension between the father and mother, one the kids obviously pick up on. There seems to be something in particular with the mother. Kaylee explicitly states at one point that she doesn’t want to talk about her. So either she abandoned them due to divorce, or is never around because of work, or, perhaps, actively hurts them in some way, either emotionally or physically. Obedience is a feature of the kids’ behavior, with the evil telling Kevin he took away Kaylee’s mouth because she didn’t do as she was told. The voice is always calling to them from the darkness, and the children do as it says despite being terrified of it or hurting themselves. As if they have no choice. As if they are compelled. It is a behavior children often demonstrate with their parents, even if their parents are unreliable or downright violent to them. Again, I’m drawn to that shot of the blood splatter appearing and reappearing on the ceiling, and I think of the cycles of hurt from the ones we love, on a doomed repeat over and over.
The second interpretation I have is much broader and more abstract. It’s important that the movie states outright at the very beginning that is was made during covid lockdown. When else could a movie like this have been made? That feeling of being trapped permeates this movie to its core. It is the plot, it is the theme, it is the reflection of the real world on display. Beyond covid, though, I think this movie captures a pervasive sense of dread most people have about the world. Everyone seems to have this feeling that something is wrong with the world. Something has gone awry. Something is on the edge of collapse or apocalypse, and there’s a powerlessness that accompanies that. There is no escape from climate change. There is no escape from economic systems that oppress the most vulnerable. Society is a house with no windows or doors, and most days, it feels like all we can do is just sit and wait for the inevitable to happen. The director Kyle Edward Ball said that his inspiration was recurring motives in nightmares, but I think in general these nightmares are manifestations of powerlessness. And that can take form in any shape, at any age.
Throughout the movie, the TV is on constantly, always playing cartoons and providing the only solace from the otherwise dark house. To me, this reads as being about the sanctuary we find in media. When we have no escape in our lives, the books, movies, or social media sites we retreat to become that for us. We find power through the lives and stories of others, whether they are real or not. And it can be fine, even healthy to retreat into that. However, the darkness lies in wait always. In the movie, the light of the TV is the only place the kids can get away from the evil in the house - until it isn’t. Eventually, the evil destroys even that. One of the last lines of the movie is poor little Kevin asking, “Can we watch something happy?”
You can watch something happy. But it will never fully protect you. And that is the dread that squirmy darkness on the screen constantly envelops around you. There will be no resolution to this. Do not hope for it. That is the horror behind it all.
#skinamarink#movie review#film analysis#horror#cw: abuse#cw: depression#spoilers#this film was not a good time#but you should see it anyway#p.s. i don't subscribe to the worldview the movie leads you to but it is incredibly effective horror

196. Shiver, by Junji Ito
Owned: Yes Page count: 394 My summary: Giant faces appear over the city, nooses dangling below them. A runaway finds domestic bliss in a house controlled by puppeteers. Paintings of a young girl always come out strange. And a family honour their ancestors in a very unusual way... My rating: 3/5 My commentary:
More Junji Ito! I was going to have my annual reread of The Dark Is Rising be my last five books of the year, all neat and tidy, and then I got some Junji Ito for Christmas and my whole brain just went 'what the hell'. And, you know, it's not like it takes all that long to get through a collection of manga short stories. Much like every other Junji Ito collection I've read, this one has its ups and downs. Overall I really liked it, as ever, full of the usual Junji Ito hallmarks and styles of storytelling. This particular collection has a section of author's commentary and original sketches after each story, which is a nice bonus.
The first of the stories I'm gonna talk about is Used Record, about a pair of kids who get addicted to listening to this strange record. One steals it from the other and tries to trace its source, and it turns out that it's a recording of the last song of a dead singer, and it's incredibly rare. And people will kill to get it. I'm torn between two ideas here - one, the notion of an addictive and haunted piece of music is kind of hard to convey in a non-audio format like this, but two, the atmosphere is creepy and the story is actually very tense. It's subtle, for Ito - no body horror or creepy imagery, at least not as much as Ito's usual trademark, which I think works more being situated next to some of the more body-horror stories. It makes a nice change, and it's interesting!
Fashion Model, is...I have some problems with this, and it's all about appearance. The idea here is that a hideous woman is a fashion model, and she turns out to be some kind of sharklike monster woman who eats people. Because ugly people are evil! Given that Ito's protagonists tend to be conventionally attractive interchangeable people, and those who look different tend to be the bad guys, it has an uncomfortable overtone of bigotry towards people whose appearances are different. There are other ways you can make someone bad, and this ain't it, Ito.
Finally, there's Honoured Ancestors. This was a creepy one - a young woman who just lost her memory is invited into the home of a man claiming to be her fiancee, but it turns out that he's the reason she lost her memory. She saw his father, who lives with the skulls of all of his ancestors connected to his head, living on in his mind and through his body. One aspect of this is lost in translation - the dad is meant to be creepy by suddenly talking like an older woman, but that language change doesn't translate well into English. This just straddled the line of being too over the top, and it strayed into the ridiculous from time to time, but I love the effort on display here, and the creepy imagery of the skulls stretching up from the dad's head like a fucked up centipede. And the woman's terror at all of this, too. Poor girl.
Next - 'tis the season! It's time for my yearly reread of the Dark is Rising sequence.

i had a dream about
two different obsessions with junji ito personified, one a creepy man who owned a local store, impressed his impressions of the characters in his own fanmade comics, so much you thought they were official. beef jerky in his store, all these souvenirs, things he made out of love for the characters. the other an official artist of the comics on instagram. she was more legit than him, the store owner, who was also said to be my father
sparse restaurants owned in a mall by people i know. these two startup an italian place. a gay boy i know and the girl from hunger games ballad of snakes and songbirds
getting into the roof section of the apartments through dragging yourself up a pole, wheelchair friendly ones were longer and touched the ground. rainforest restaurant and a buffet that was lesser quality, cheaper
going around college looking into the personal suite houses with my childhood best friend. we were recorded and supposedly went viral. lonely touching a boy's arm. bible study with people you don't relate to. iphone charger blocks stacked on the campus quad. drama about my friend's ex boyfriend. he liked a minor but it turned out he was a minor at the same time. seeing the type of people my roommate would be friends with around
using the bathroom in my elementary school gym bathroom
uh, a lake riddle (junji ito man's storeside attraction) where you found and collected all the different types of fish in the river...for an achievement. there were swimming monkeys that gave you riddles. it was this neighborhood or town i went to a lot with my cousins, or high school friends, or fair ground i got lost from my mother on, a mcdonalds on the other side that was changed too much
was it the boy i've been seeing who took me out in a school bus, through the woods, to a pink lake, sick frothing, abandoned playground, here's this convoluted thing you'd make up about what would happen if you didn't go in the water when i told you to. and then i push you in anyway. and the pink water changes you and makes you fucked up. it was an amusement park here. a dam

Thanks to @astoppedclock for tagging me and apologies for the delay.
Last Song : Ghosts Again by Depeche Mode... Needless to say, Memento Mori is a very emotional and melancholic record and I really identified with that work. Since it is dedicated to all the loved ones who are no longer with us but are still present and sooner or later we will find them. 🥺🕊️👼
Latest TV Show: I haven't watched TV shows because there isn't much variety here and they aren't good.
Currently Watching: Gokushufudo (Season 2) and Junji Ito Maniac: Japanese Tales of the Macabre, both on netflix.
The first is a fun series of short comedy episodes about an ex-Yakuza who now lives his life as a house husband, but the problem is that the main character (Tatsu) still speaks Yakuza lingo, which makes the intentions of the protagonist are simple or an innocent action is interpreted as something sinister to those who know him, which makes it funny, since the people who interact with him tend to feel uncomfortable or scared, something that the protagonist seems not to realize. Although as a house husband and husband, he is very attentive and very skilled. 😂
Junji Ito Maniac, as his name says; is a compilation of stories adapted from the master of Japanese horror, Junji Ito. Although the premise is very good, I feel that the animation left a lot to be done and it is not very well worked.
Although anyway, I'm glad that they have adapted the macabre stories of the horror master so that more people know the terrifying, but fascinating stories of Junji Ito.
Current reading: 1984 by George Orwell and with all the things that have been happening in the world, it has given me reasons to read this story and why dictatorships, regardless of their ideology, will always be the worst thing that can happen to the humanity.

I'm such an ADHD gremlin, I was recording non snz dialogue and used a book of mine to have some SFX of pages flipping and then I caught myself reading the book for like 20 minutes when I was supposed to be recording =u=;
BTW it was Remina by the horror genius himself, Junji Ito lol

Okay, I think it's time I clean up my blog a little and give a proper introduction.
Hello there! My name is Sloth, and I am a writer. I am new to writing in the fanfiction department, but I am very experienced with writing in general. I have been writing since I was a lot younger, and the genres I write now are primarily psychological horror, romance, and some wholesome slice-of-life, coming-of-age type content. I look forward to getting to know you and overall growing a bigger audience and growing as a person.
Besides drawing, my hobbies are gaming, kickboxing, collecting teacups and tea pots, and I also collect vinyl records for my record player. I also enjoy movies. In fact, I can include a list of some of my favorite movies:
American Psycho
Last Night in Soho
Perfect Blue
West Side Story
The Truman Show
I would list out the video games I play, but then we would be here all day. I can, however, give you some writers I like!
A. Rasen
C.K. Walker
Dathan Auerbach
Junji Ito
I hope to expand my tastes in horror authors. Hopefully more who are women. I do like anime, but I'm more into gaming than anime. Nevertheless, I'm certain I can write something for you as long as it fits the boundaries I make. So onto that:
Sloth's Boundaries
I will write:
Age regression headcanons
Fanfics, headcanons, oneshots (I am fairly open to trying different types of fanfiction like oneshots or series.)
Ships (well, that depends)
X readers (in fact, that is what I am most willing to write as of right now.)
Angst
Anxiety stuff
Depression stuff (always content warnings. No worries)
LGBTQ+ Content
Comfort for things (that depends)
Fluff
Polyamorous
I will NOT write:
NSFW (I am a minor. I don't care if you are a minor too, crossing this boundary is an instant block.)
Incest
Stepcest
Pedophillia
Zoophillia
Heavily trauma based content (as someone with trauma, I understand that comfort is everything, but it is important that everyone, writer included, is safe. So I am placing this restriction. This includes content that heavily talks about SA, abuse, etc)
Yandere content
IRL people x reader
IRL people ships (anything involving irl that isn't an obvious joke creeps me out)
Anything involving aging up minors.
Proshipping stuff
Okay. Onto the fun stuff now!
Sloth's Fandoms!
Please note that this list can grow over time. Also while I am willing to write for these fandoms, some stuff I won't 100% know. Pls no spoilers on Yakuza!
Video games:
Yakuza Like a Dragon (as of right now)
The Last of Us 1
Persona 5
Detroit Become Human
Beyond Two Souls
Heavy Rain

While adults are welcome to send me writing requests that are within my boundaries, this blog is mostly for minors. You all are welcome, but if someone is being a creep, let me know. Play nice, no bigotry, and I hope you all enjoy my content. Feel free to message or send an ask regarding my writing, me, whatever (just keep is appropriate). Sometimes, you may catch me on here simply blogging my thoughts on stuff. And hey, if you like that, feel free to read my thoughts. Now for some facts about me!
Sloth Facts!
My favorite foods are surf and turf, beef brisket pho, and salmon sushi.
On the topic of food, I have a very low tolerance to sweets. I can get sick from a single Tastycake pie. I prefer savory foods. My absolute favorite sweet thing to eat is chicken teriyaki with veggies and rice.
I have done some traveling! I toured Italy and Costa Rica. I'm aiming for Peru this year!
I don't dream often, but when I do they are very vivid. In fact, I might post about my dreams at some point.
When I was little, I was obsessed with 80s Transformers and would recite the whole thing word for word. But I "stopped liking it" because my grandma once said "That's a boy thing."
I used to be really into MBTI. Now the people there annoy me. But for those that like it too, my type is ______ (Let's play a game. Guess my MBTI based on the content I make.)
Pompompurin, Retsuko, Kuromi, and Gudetama are my favorite Sanrio characters.
The horror I write is all social critcism.
My fashion sense includes lolita (both cutesy, punk, and gothic), 50s, 60s, 80s, and the pastelcore type.
A single word can help me make a story. I can also make an entire story scene based on a single song.
I hope you enjoyed that little get-to-know the blogger. I hope you enjoy my content! Thank you and take care!💙

Junji Ito makeup test #1
OR
Figuring out what I need in order to create a music video parody of the song "Gloria" by Laura Branigan, but make it about Tomie. I will be playing the part of a 1980s pop disco singer in the style of Junji Ito. This is high art in progress, people! 😘😂😅
photos of first test:
additional digital notes made using Clip Studio:
main takeaways:
So first off, where the fuck did my stage makeup go??? I had no idea it was missing until today!! I ended up using the makeup from when I used to perform as a mime. (Not a joke, but in a larger, cosmic sense, kind of a joke. 😆 I'll probably do it again sometime. I was adorable as a little soft butch gay mime!)
I now remember why I stopped using the dry cake face paint and switched to wet paint in a tube BUT I CANNOT FIND THE TUBESSS
I'm out of eyeliner in general, but for this, I need some kind of extra thin/fine eyeliner and preferably more than a thimble-full of paint for it.
Maybe I can thin out some matte black face paint and also get like a really nice fine brush? I guess it depends on if the paint is water-soluble.
I should probably check to see if I already have these materials, which would be SO MUCH EASIER IF I COULD FIND MY FUCKING STAGE MAKEUP--
Either way the lines need to be super thin, straight, clean, and parallel to each other. Or I could look at the rougher cross-hatching Ito sometimes uses, but I suspect tidier lines will look best with makeup.
Luckily, I already have an entire burlesque/drag act where I make myself look like a character from a black and white film. Between that and the mime thing, I theoretically have all the white gloves I will ever need lol. I guess I'm going to need white leggings, since the light gray ones won't work for this. Junji Ito is not generally greyscale as much as literally black and white.
Do I own makeup primer? I feel like yes. It definitely sounds like a good idea.
I KNOW FOR A FACT I DIDN'T THROW OUT MY STAGE MAKEUP because I had quality skin-safe glitter in basically every color, and only a FOOL would throw that out!!!!
Gloria is a song from 1983 with disco balls in the music video. Do I want to incorporate more style choices from 1983? Should I buy a wig? Something with shoulder pads maybe?? I guess that means I can keep the thick eyebrows...
Actually upon further research, I do need a sequinned shirt for this. Possibly a sequin leotard with a shiny belt. And leg warmers. OH! And a jacket with just the biggest shoulder pads I can find! Or at least the closest thing I can find to this outfit in one trip to a thrift store
Every 1980s music videos seems to have a person with their hair and clothing flowing in the wind. Now, I could buy a fan. But much funnier and cheaper would be a shot of my hair blowing in the wind that then pans to a friend furiously fanning me with a piece of cardboard or something. (Which means I'd need either two people helping with this shot, or I just have to accept that the shot's going to look kind of blurry by doing the zoom-out in post. Oh gods, I would have to write a proper shot list ahhhhhh--)
Honestly, blurry footage seems fine in some parts. I'm probably going to add some dreamy soft filters anyway to make it look like pre-digital 35mm film from an 80s vid.
I'm going to need some fake blood to splatter at me in the middle of the video. Obviously. So I guess that bit will need to be filmed outside.
The good news is the fact that the nearest easiest filming location for me is a alley full of dumpsters is actually really appropriate for this video. XD
Should I do the distressed eyebrows that a lot of Junji Ito characters have? Note to try that in the next test along with a The Crow-like smile. (My go-to high school Halloween costume. Damn, I have been painting my already pasty-pale face even whiter for a while now! 😅)
Other progress made on this project today:
I recorded myself singing a voice memo along to the rhythm of the karaoke version of Gloria that's on YouTube, but in it, I'm singing in the key that is appropriate to my voice. (A couple half-steps down, I think.)
Next step will be to load that clip onto my computer and adjust the karaoke version to match its pitch. And then like, practice the song with my new personalized backing track.
If i actually finish this, I'll have to re-record the backup vocals to say the right name.
Also the next step will be to see if my interest in this lasts long enough to at least get me to find my frickin' stage makeup.
Additional notes:
The original music video for Holding Out for a Hero is exactly the right energy for this, and now I absolutely need shots of me in front of (badly green-screened) flames, on my knees while singing passionately and directly at the camera and presumably wearing kneepads tbh
Omg what if I included a little "photoshoot" sequence and really fucked with the photos to make them all blurry-body-horror nasty as they flash by real quick?? Get like, a glitch effect in the mix hell yeah 😎😎😎
Edit: Omg i just remembered I have these short-shorts with a reanimator quote on the ass! ("Blasphemy? Before what god?") i know what shorts to wear for this now!!
Oh! Another idea! What if the video starts with me reading Tomie and then closing the book and picking up the nearest microphone-shaped thing and using that to start singing - and every 30 seconds or so of footage, it quietly changes to a different item (one of which is absolute the black wand vibrator that I have XD)
Note: I can easily shorten the song if I only have funny shots planned for like 2/3 of the song length. No need to get too repetitive.
#original#I lost over half of my belongings due to bedbugs a couple years ago and I'm still extremely bitter about it so I really hope that#i am right that i kept the makeup. it was precious to me i would have kept it. still so bitter about losing my sewing machine and my guitar#and all my lovely nail polish and all my kitchen appliances and my organizational systems. bottom line is i deserve 1000 presents#and that bedbugs are the scariest creature on the fucking planet. and that i WANT. MY MAKEUP. but i am 99% i have it somewhere still#my character as a mime is a lot like Wes from DST but i hadn't played that game yet at the time. like a very soft harpo marx.#always wrong place wrong time and overenthusiastic in silly soft-hearted ways. their name is JJ Juniper.#tomie Kawakami#tomie#like I want to be completely clear I am a literal clown XD and this video project is very much clown shit and that is on purpose 😅#the inspiration for this project came from the fact that the names Gloria and Tomie have the same rhythm. and that's basically it.#what's it like being a genius you ask? well I would say it isn't easy except it absolutely is incredibly easy XD#if I finish this project it will be like all of my other junji Ito fan work.#which is to say it will be an EXTREMELY detailed and lovingly crafted shit post that takes many dozens of hours to finish#so that's good.#image descriptions#at the very least I found my regular makeup. which is very much also for performing but contains less glitter and face paint#for the raised eyebrow line - what do drag queens use for that?#by the way I absolutely do not have all the white gloves I'll ever need bc nothing in this world stains faster#than a cheap white glove on a clumsy man! but that is okay they are incredibly cheap#OMG if I use my cane to dance in this video I should bedazzle it! also in general I wouldn't mind having a bedazzled cane
