IT'S NOT A COINCIDENCE THAT JUNG-BAE IS IN THE GAMES. At first that was my one reservation about Season 2's setup, because, come on, you really expect me to believe that out of all the people in Korea, three guys from the same little village are getting selected? And Gi-hun's friends get selected both times he plays, despite it being years later? It seemed a little contrived.
But then the director stated that in his view, the recruiters had actually first selected Sang-woo, because he had a lot of debt. They then looked at his friends, and selected Gi-hun--not primarily because of his debt, although that was necessary, but because of his close connection to Sang-woo. They deliberately sought to pit people with close, existing relationships up against each other.
Knowing that the entirety of the games in this season are centered around and designed for Gi-hun (even down to the recruitment phone number being 456-010), it makes perfect sense that this is the year Jung-bae gets recruited.
Because Gi-hun would have to watch him die.

I don't like the color orange. Because it's not red, nor is it yellow, either.

Just rewatched Tune in for Love after a long time and now I'm sure it's one of my favorite romance movies of all time. It just excels at everything I love about this genre: the mixture of fluff and angst, the yearning, the longing, the insane chemistry between Kim Go Eun and Jung Hae In... It's basically perfect. Also, I need both of them to reunite in a full-length drama, please 🥹🥹🥹

So I've broken my tentative hiatus for Squid Game brainrot, of all the things. I don’t know how else to channel it out of my body and brain…
My relationship with the show has been v sporadic. Didn’t watch the first season until 2-3 years after its release because I didn’t believe the subject would be compelling to me (not into shows highly action-packed or game/reality show-esque, and this was the impression I had of it), but after realizing it was more like Alice in Borderland (another show with similar ideas to Squid Game - which I’d highly recommend), I decided to give it a shot. I still personally found AiB better— at least the first season— but I enjoy Squid Game about as much at this point. The characters really make it for me.
I finally watched the second season of Squid Game this past week. I know it may be old news being over a month old now (hurts my soul how fast things are blown through now, despite knowing some part of the fandoms will linger), but it at least wasn’t years later that I got to it this time, and frankly it’s had me spiraling right back into a Squid Game headspace even harder this time. I didn’t expect its abrupt end, either; I went into this season with full expectancy it’d be like the first, with the story playing entirely through. I get why they’d split it up though, what with modern society’s attention span and keeping the show’s momentum lasting a little longer.
If I knew, I may have waited to start watching until both season 2 and 3 were already out, hahaha... but alas. Instead, I revisited season 1 again, since it’s been long enough I’ve forgotten a good portion of it. So much, in fact, I didn’t realize some of the characters were recurring characters— outside of the Recruiter and Gi-hun. But much of it gradually returned to me as I went, as things do. Jung-bae and In-ho were more of a slow dawning realization; even though I knew In-ho was Jun-ho’s brother, I hadn’t remembered anything beyond his S1 cliff-reveal and assumed he hadn’t been in the show in any real capacity until season 2. The wonders of a faulty memory. But I’ve finished it all, both the new and revisiting of old.
Wanted to list my favorite characters throughout both seasons for mainly my own fun, though the whole cast really makes it difficult to narrow down:
1. Seong Gi-hun - S1 & S2. Call me basic for this one. While he may make questionable life decisions, he’s genuinely empathetic toward others in such an endearing way, one of the few humans willing to take chances on people no one else will, even if at a detriment to his own well being. This man has been experiencing trauma after trauma in terms of loss and somehow manages to keep on going.
Tumblr media
2. Hwang In-ho - S1 & S2. Perhaps another basic choice, but I’m a down-hard sucker for layered villains — nay, evil villains that still have a sliver of humanity and/or emotion still left inside of them, even if in an unclear or confusing way. I admit I thought little of him in the first season, aside from some curiosity surrounding how he became who he is, but the second season has me hooked. He is about the most charismatically awkward man when it comes to imitating typical human behavior that I’ve ever witnessed, and I live for it.
Tumblr media
3. Jo Hyun-ju - S2. Honestly another genuine soul who does far more for others than they probably deserve, and who was prematurely robbed of a beautiful friendship (or more, depending on how you could look at it). Even stays honest in spaces it may not wholly be known to be safe. We could all aspire to this level of bravery and candor.
Tumblr media
4. The Recruiter - S1 & S2. Teetering on the edge of being too unhinged for the profession he’s been given, yet it works regardless. Truly, how batshit this guy ended up being was a prime choice for season two and I’d watch a series of his character and his antics any day.
Tumblr media
5. Kang Sae-Byeok - S1. Simply v interesting from the start. Has a level of mysterious, quiet daring you wouldn’t expect, but makes her interaction with almost every character a unique one. Conspires with a random, unhinged woman with zero warning and no hesitation. Literally pulls a shard of glass out of her own torso and proceeds to act as casual as possible about it.
Tumblr media
Honorable Mentions (tbh, a continuation beyond top 5)
6. Abdul Ali - S1 (he deserved more; I would fight his enemies to the death for him.)
Tumblr media
7. Bak Jung-bae - S2 (supportive bestie, distracts you from the horrors by grounding you to the fact there’s still life outside the games, reminds you to not take things too seriously. really tho, how can you not appreciate him?)
Tumblr media
8. Oh Il-Nam - S1 (unpopular opinion, but he was honestly an interesting character. don't approve of his business idea & the associations he had, but the way his interactions seemed a lot like tests of goodness - primarily with Gi-hun and especially in the marble scene - while also admitting his bond with the man helped reconnect him with his own sense of humanity at the very end of life wrecked me)
Tumblr media
9. Choi Woo-seok - S2 (found the random crony to genuine, helpful ally to be a lesser-used, endearing role. i'd work with him and also wish the boat arc hadn’t gotten so underwhelming so we could’ve seen him do more)
Tumblr media
10. Han Mi-nyeo - S1 (couldn't stand her, but admittedly she did some both bold and badass [albeit shameless] things I can't help but respect her for, mainly the bathroom and glass bridge scenes)
Tumblr media
11. Cho Sang-woo - S1 (honestly would push him straight off the bridge next, but he was still a well-written character who played his self-serving role with aplomb, and I found him fascinating with the way he contended with himself)
