I always love hearing what you think and talking about books with you, it literally makes the whole experience better. I have a lot to say, so out of respect to anyone who might stumble upon this I'm gonna keep going under the cut.
I completely agree about what you said about how relatable her characters are, and I think it can be summed up by: the parts you relate to make you feel seen, the parts you don't make you see.
And I would also choose this book to live in out of all of them. Not just because of Waning Bay, but just because of how cozy the whole plot sounds to me. All of the activities they did around the town sound ideal, and they were one of my favourite parts about the book. Like, if that was my weekly routine I would not complain for the rest of my days. It just seems so peaceful and yet fulfilling. And the way she loved her job so much and worked so hard because of that is literally my dream. I think that's part of why you can see her love for the library portrayed so well, like you were talking about.
Miles is definitely my favourite Emily Henry main male character now, and I'm also definitely not surprised Daphne fell in love with him. And the way you described their relationship is perfect, the way they became friends and then gradually and naturally fell in love is exactly why I loved them together so much.
There's a couple of things I forgot to mention in my initial ask, so I wrote them down to discuss with you as I remembered them. For starters, the tropes in this book are the best combination of tropes ever. Roommates? I always know what's gonna happen and I enjoy watching it happen anyway. 10/10. Fake dating? You mean opportunities for hilarious and awkward situations that lead to REAL dating? 10/10. Friends to lovers? So well written and natural you just can't resist. 10/10. Found Family? ALWAYS 10/10.
And I agree, it's so realistic because they're not just a group of people who are the same ages and who each have a defining personality trait or quirk so that the whole package is "complete". Yes, they're all different people, but they also have overlapping interests and shared circumstances that bring them together, which is what makes it make sense. Like Daphne and Ashleigh both work at the library, but they have very different personalities and don't know how to connect. Miles and Daphne live together due to an awful situation that makes them sympathize with each other, but they don't seem to share much other than that. Julia and Miles are siblings, but they are 13 years apart and don't know how to communicate. Etc., etc. And of course this changes throughout the book as they get to know each other and find things to do and love together, but the way their differences and similarities are balanced are part of what makes them so great as a group. I hope I'm putting this down right because it makes a lot of sense in my head and I was pretty proud of this observation.
Another detail I couldn't wait to talk about was how not only did they visit North Bear Shores, but met January? The universe Emily Henry is building is slowly bringing all the couples together and I am so here for it. I NEED everyone else to meet at some point. And it's kind of a risky thing to do, cause it could come across as awkward or forced, but it's actually so natural. Like it's just a short scene without even any dialogue, but it becomes such a nice little detail.
Somehow during my ramble I also forgot to talk about Starfire, which I can't believe. Every single thing that came out of her mouth had me laughing out loud, especially her whole Titanic backstory. In my opinion this is the funniest Emily Henry book, and even though most of the main and side characters were already funny, I think her scenes were even better. Yes, the plot and the characters and the romance were amazing, but I would be lying if I said she wasn't one of the reasons why I can't wait to reread this book.
And finally, we're getting a new Emily Henry book!!! I'm sooo excited! Hopefully I'll manage to read this one as soon as it comes out. I love how she talks about this book on her newsletter, so I can't wait.
I was reading Emily Henry's latest grocery list and I remembered I never told you about Funny Story!! I'm so annoyed I let this much time pass because now I can't remember all the little details that I kept waiting to tell you about while I was reading it, but anyways. I loved it SO much.
One of the things I love most about Emily Henry's books are her characters. She literally thinks of every little detail and creates completely new and unique characters with backstories and different personalities. And even though every main character is different, I still relate to certain parts of all of them. The main characters (and some of the side characters too) always have something they have to work though to grow as individuals and everytime it's so interesting and satisfying and somehow relatable?? Especially in this book I think.
Daphne has one of my favourite storylines out of all of the Emily Henry books, and I love how she slowly makes new friends and reconstructs her whole life in Waning Bay. Speaking of Waning Bay, it's such a lovely setting. Emily Henry always makes you feel like you're wherever her characters are, either on the asparagus farm or drinking a chocolate milkshake.
I also loved Daphne and Ashley's friendship. Even though it happened kind of out of necessity they still ended up really close and I loved seeing that.
And obviously her and Miles' relationship was one of the best parts of the book. I think it's my favourite Emily Henry ship. They were so good as friends, and I feel like they confided a lot on each other from the beginning. He was so supportive all throughout the book, especially with everything that happened with Daphne's dad (when I found out he went after him to tell him what a terrible father he is I couldn't belive it). He was just a great character, and as you get to know him you get to see the contrast between him and Peter (who after only two scenes managed to become one of my least favourite characters of all time).
I think I rambled on a bit too much, but I'd love to hear what you thought about this book!!
Btw, I can't wait for the PWMOV adaptation to come out, hopefully I'll reread the book before then!!
I am so so happy you loved it!!! I saw a lot of mixed reviews online so I wasn't sure how you would end up feeling but I'm so glad you enjoyed it too!!
You are SO SO right about her characters. The parts of them I don't relate to I can still feel connected to and feel for, and then there's so much I relate to and feel seen by and she puts words to feelings I never knew how to articulate (ESPECIALLY with Daphne in this one I was like wow this hits). And they're all such different main characters but they're also the most relatable characters I've ever read and it's such a special reading experience.
Love the way you described the storyline of this one, and I wholly agree. If I could live in an Emily Henry, I would live in this one. The whole time I was reading it, I felt like I was falling in love with the life Daphne was living, and left the book wishing so badly that I could live in it. Like, if I could wake up tomorrow in Waning Bay and be roommates with Miles and a children's librarian grabbing a chai latte on the way to work and going on adventures around the town with Miles afterwards I would not complain AT ALL that sounds so perfect.
Also, I always love the way Emily Henry depicts being a reader in her books. Since authors tend to be readers, they usually Get It and know how to depict loving books in a way that connects to readers, but there's something about the way Emily Henry does this in each book that just hits so much harder, and it's always a fresh perspective too (like Beach Read specifically tackles romance books, while Book Lovers is more about books in general). In this one, as someone who grew up practically in the library, it was so special seeing a love for the library in particular shown, not just love for reading.
And yes! I really appreciated Ashley and Daphne's friendship and the depiction of how hard and weird it is to make friends as an adult, especially if you've always struggled with finding belonging. And also the other friendships she formed with the townspeople and Miles' sister, it was like a little found family but with people of all ages, which we don't see as much and it felt more realistic and I loved that.
AND DAPHNE AND MILES. OH. MY. STARS. I could gush forever. I'm so down bad for Miles, I think if we're talking realistically, he's the book man I would marry if I could choose just one to bring to life. This book was also maybe the most natural depiction of love I've ever seen? Like the pipeline of acquaintances bonded by their situation to friends to best friends slowly becoming lovers felt so real, it was like I was experiencing falling in love along alongside Daphne. It really reminded me of the way listening to You Are In Love feels but in book form. They really were so supportive of each other, and I loved just spending everyday life with them exploring the town and watching movies together. (Also so agree about Peter.)
You definitely did not ramble too much!! (If anything I probably did lol) I loved hearing all of your thoughts!!
SAME about PWMOV I'm excited but also scared. I reread all the EmHen books this summer (except for Funny Story) and ended up re-reading PWMOV twice and it really stuck out as my for sure favorite this time, so I'm like I need it to be done justice.
And I think Funny Story is maybe right up there with PWMOV, or third favorite (behind Beach Read), I would just need to reread to know for sure. I've been thinking about it and wanting to reread it constantly since I finished it.

what was the casting process like for the bright sessions? :O
initially, there was hardly any process to speak of! every cast member in the original run of TBS (seasons 1-4) were people I met in acting class or friends of friends. here's the breakdown -
Julia Morizawa - met in an acting class at BGB Studio Briggon Snow - BGB Anna Lore - met in improv 101 at UCB Charlie Ian - BGB Andrew Nowak - BGB Alex Gallner - friend of Briggon's Ian McQuown - friend of Anna's Alex Marshall-Brown - friend of Anna's and Ian's Phillip Jordan - BGB Alanna Fox - BGB Reyn Beeler - part of the ars paradoxica cast! aka friend of Mischa's
as you can see, that weekly class at BGB Studio in North Hollywood was the place for TBS casting lol - there were so many great actors that moved through that Sunday night class, but all of us were in class with each other at one point or another, and having that experience of acting together really helped I think.
when I started the show, I knew I wanted to act in it and I wanted to write a role for Anna, my best friend. but I actually didn't know Julia or Briggon that well - I just admired their acting and took a swing in asking them. that worked so well that then it was like....okay, well BGB is my actor pool now (I remember vividly the moment that Charlie was doing a scene in class and Julia and I looked at each other and had a silent conversation of "oh THERE'S our Damien").
season 5 (the bright sides - the bonus episodes) was similar. Michael Felix (who plays Austin) was someone we found through auditions, but everyone else was an actor either I knew or the writer of the episode knew, including folks from other podcasts! then, for seasons 6 and 7, the spin-offs, we just did a very traditional casting process, including in person auditions for season 6 (we recorded season 7 in 2020).

Funny story by emily henry- one of the purest books (not in that way)
Guess what..?! I just added one of my first books of 2024 in my top ten reads! That's what funny story by emily henry did to me, from being absolutely fucking hilarious but, at the same time being such a heartbreaking book it somehow managed to make a place in my heart. Emily Henry needs no introduction to the world of romance books but i still found some of her books either incredibly boring or red flag induced (iykyk) but happy place and funny story were the only ones who had me in chokehold. I can honestly rave abt it for ages.. but fr this book was one of the purest, coming of age story and had such amazing too good to be true characters in them (miles nowak i am looking at you) but srsly.. what's up with the whole ex naming pe-ter and pe-tra that was for sure hilarious though. Like it was such a realistic portrayal of a relationship and was done in a breathtaking way, the way daphne felt in the beginning to how she matured as a person, her character growth..god!! it was beautiful. I loved how both daphne and miles complete each other but at the same time they aren't perfect either. and miles miles and miles what should i say about this guy other than the fact that emily has put the bar so high we need binoculars (pj ik) but srsly god took precious care and time when he created this absolute gem of a man, he is such a golden retriever loved by literally every single person he meets..!! The side characters julia, ashleigh (not ashley mind you) , daphne's mom and the rich heiress who was depraved of love due to the drowning of her poor beloved ~ starlight (that's her name srsly and this is her past life story as predicted by her psychic might seem a little too familiar but don't mind it) overall it was definitely a 5 star read!!!

REDWOOD CITY – The No. 4 California women's rowing team dominated the duel against No. 7 Washington sweeping all five races Saturday morning at the Redwood Shores in Redwood City. With the Bears' win in the V8+ race, the Simpson Cup, which goes to the winner of the varsity eight race, comes back to Cal for the first time since 2019. Cal's 2V8+, 3V8+, 4V8+ and V4+ also notched wins in the duel. This marks the second time this season the V8+, 3V8+ and V4+ defeated Washington as the two faced off at the San Diego Crew Classic earlier this month.   "Washington brought out the best in us today," Cal head coach Al Acosta said. "We've done quite a bit of racing and travel over the last three weeks, so I was a little concerned about how much juice we'd have for this one, but the team did an amazing job of going stroke for stroke with the Huskies early and then extending the margin later in the race. Four years ago, when our seniors were freshmen, we got swept by UW, so it's very gratifying to see the seniors get this one. Now that we're halfway through the season I think we're in a good spot, but we have some big races coming up and it's not going to get any easier so we will need to continue to get faster."   In the V8+ race, both boats were even through the first 20 strokes before Cal took a two-seat lead in the first 500 meters. As the boats approached the 1,000-meter mark, the Bears were ahead by a half boat. Cal kept the pressure on over the third 500 meters and extended its lead to a seat of open water. The Bears maintained that margin to take the victory in a time of 6:08.8 and bring home the Simpson Cup.
In the matchup of the 2V8+, it was fairly even off the start with Cal taking just a one-seat lead over the first 20 strokes. As the boats hit the halfway mark, the Bears kept their lead and went ahead by two seats. Cal kept the pressure on over the third 500 meters and went ahead by a half boat before extending its lead to almost a full boat over the closing 500 meters to take the win in 6:20.2.   In the 3V8+ race, it was tight over the first 500 meters until Cal took a four-seat lead at the 1,000-meter mark. The Bears were able to extend their lead to open water over the third 500 meters and held that lead to finish first in a time of 6:33.2.   In the 4V8+ duel, the first 500 meters were close before the Bears took a three-seat lead by the halfway mark. Cal was able to extend its lead over the third 500 meters and went ahead by a bit of open water to take the win in a time of 6:46.9.   In the V4+ race, Cal got off to a good start and went ahead by two seats within the first 20 strokes. The Huskies were able to walk back a seat and pulled nearly even over the first 500 meters. By the time Cal hit the halfway mark, it was ahead by almost a boat length. The Bears continued to press and built an open-water lead over the second half of the race to get the win in a time of 6:46.9.    The Bears will have next weekend off before competing in the Big Row against No. 1 Stanford on May 4 at the Redwood Shores.   Results   V8+ 1. Cal – 6:08.8 2. Washington – 6:12.6   2V8+ 1. Cal – 6:20.2 2. Washington – 6:23.2
3V8+ 1. Cal – 6:33.2 2. Washington – 6:40.8   4V8+ 1. Cal – 6:46.9 2. Washington – 6:50.6   V4+ 1.
It took me the better part of a day but I think I’ve done it. I think I’ve written out your whole message. It…I honestly have no idea what it says. I was so focused on the individual letters, barely any words formed from it as I went.
I…I should go get Harry. But she’s sleeping and…I think she needs the rest. After—we’re still working through things and I think—no, I know—we will be for a very long time. As we waited for your message to finish transmitting, we talked a lot. We maybe got a little…distracted from time to time, but she put it all out on the table, everything she’d been thinking and feeling that she didn’t tell me. Things she didn’t even write in her notebook. And I told her things…we aired grievances and shared the times when we thought we might get close to something, back in New York. She talked about how she felt about Pete and listened to me when I talked about him and…and she was really kind when I couldn’t parse the good from the bad, when I didn’t want to just write him off as a violent criminal. I mean, I don’t…well, there are a lot of things I need to work through and it doesn’t all have to do with Harry.
Well. I could fill you in on all of it, on every detail, but…these broadcasts have been mine, separate from Harry, as much as anything in my life can be separate from Harry, and there are some things with her that are separate from the world. At least for now.
I know I said I might stop transmitting now that we’re safe and I think…I think I am going to take a break. Disappear for a little while like you’re so fond of doing. I’m—well, I think I’m happy and I’m not totally sure what to do with that feeling. Especially since it’s laced with…well, Junior is still out there, we’re still trapped here and even though I know what it’s like to kiss her, to— I don’t think I’ve forgiven Harry yet, not fully. She knows that, she…she’s understanding of it. Genuinely. But that doesn’t mean I don’t want to try to get there. Especially since I know I haven’t been the paragon of healthy communication and perfect relationship behavior so there are things that I need to…that I need her forgiveness on and, well, I think she wants to try to get there too.
All that said—well, I don’t know what I’m going to find in your message and I hope it’s not goodbye forever, but maybe this is a goodbye for now. I want only good things for you Birdie. I hope you get a little peace of mind. A little closure. I’m discovering eve the tiniest glimpse of it really does wonders.
Okay. Here we go.
“Dear Whiskey,
I am sorry that we couldn’t meet. You find yourself in a watch tower of my own creation. I wasn’t positive it would still be functioning in this timeline—you never do know when an earthquake or a storm is going to cause something to come toppling down—but I’m relieved to find that it is. I do wish I could have been there myself, but we can only enter timelines through great pains and effort and I have already interfered far more than we are meant to. Though I suppose my hand was forced when I ceased to be the only one communicating with you.
The person you know as Fox is, as you guessed, a purist. They want all people in all places to be instead in one place, following one path. They do not believe that anyone should be free to make their own choices and live with the consequences. They would prefer to guide your hand into another choice you cannot take back, all in service of what they deem to be correct. They know what they are; they even told you directly. Though they are not the figment of an author’s imagination, they are as close to Eternity as one can get. Though in this case, they are not the norm, but a rebel.
And I cannot claim there is nothing to re—rebel against. It is not a perfect system. It is hard, to watch people suffer in the worlds of their own creation, with no obvious recourse. Sometimes these timelines correct themselves, merging with each other or disappearing entirely. But even we, the keepers and observers of these strands, cannot fully comprehend the intricacies of why certain shifts are created.
As you know, you are not the first person for whom I have tried to bring comfort in a lonely universe. Not all alternate worlds are as empty as yours, but some are even emptier. And yours, was of course, becoming more empty all the time, though that may not be a bad thing for every person involved.
Fox told you you’re too late because the timeline has shifted once again. I’ll explain that in a moment but first I need to talk about the shift that preceded it, that caused an angry man to seek vengeance. A few months ago, Fred Billings’ mother—“
Fred. That’s his name. Fred. Wow, I, uh—anyway—
“Fred Billings’ mother, who was her—who was here, vanished from this place and merged with her correct timeline. Both Fred and his father perished in a car accident on New Year’s Eve 1974, and the widow Billings’ life was forever changed. Fred woke up here one day to find that his mother—who he had lived with in some degree of contentment for the last six years—had vanished. Meanwhile, she was waking up in the place she was from, with no memory of this world.
That’s what would have happened if you had killed Junior. Or, at least, that is what Fox and I both suspected. That it would have aligned enough with the timeline of your origin and you would’ve been sent back. But you should know, if that were to happen, all of this would seem like a strange dream. Your memories of the last seven years would be filled with the experience of that other you. The events you’ve experienced here would not inform your life. I have not brought you here to keep you from making that decision for yourself, but because I thought you deserved to have all the information relevant to what Fox was asking you to do. They forced my hand when they told you to kill Fred—I could not let you do that without knowing the full consequences.
However, it is a moot point. As I said, something in the timeline has shifted again. You have merged—you have merged with another offshoot, your circumstances have once again changed. I wish I could give you the information that would help you navigate this new world—I wish I knew if this meant more potential allies or if this meant that you were closer to getting back home than you were before. But we cannot see all. Fox has their ways of seeing more than most, but I suspect even they are uncertain of what this shift has brought.
I do know that yours and Harry’s fates are irreversibly intertwined. I cannot think of a decision on any timeline that would separate you as you are now. In that sense, I take comfort in knowing you will never be truly alone.
On that subject, I have a final gift for you. I know you are going to cease transmitting soon. And I understand that, I do. But before you go silent, look at the radio system in front of you—“
…okay…
“Turn it on and tune to the very last frequency. Then switch on the delta tune to the positive and access the off-frequency just beyond that final channel.
Through some error that I know my superiors would like to correct, your transmissions have been reaching out—have been reaching outside of your world. In the same way that visions of the world you came from have bled into where you are now—” The polaroids I’m guessing— “your words have reached beyond their usual bounds. It is why they were able to reach your friends from across the country and after a year of listening to you, I have yet to figure out why this is happening at all.
Perhaps now that you are no longer alone, you don’t need this particular comfort. But you have spent all this time calling into the dark, hoping someone was listening, hoping someone would call back. Hoping that someone out there would find you.
You were found a long time ago. You were never really lost or alone. Many of them were alone, before they heard your voice. But the moment you called out, there were voices calling back, even if you couldn’t hear them.
Your friend, Birdie”
What…I don’t…I don’t understand—
Okay, tune to the last frequency…let’s see
[turning to the frequency]
“You were found a long time ago”…Who found—
[gets to the last frequency and then—
a cacophony of different voices, all the messages that Whiskey has not been receiving, from infinite timelines]
(an intake of breath)
Oh my god.

Blooming Superstar (slight redux)
Tumblr media
before getting into this, i just wanna say, Yoko's not short, let's just say that she's standing below the others.
so remember sometime last year (i think it was last year? correct me if i'm wrong) i made a post about a spinoff series involving Ren Hua after @askkassandragf-v-2 came up with the idea of her having a spinoff series? well i decided to make some adjustments, mainly with the plot, as i used to have some kind of different premise for it. i now think that the series would revolve around the events of Hello Killer, Mystery, Hello Psychopath, and possibly Aftermath but from RH's POV, adapting to the fame, contending with the struggles and adversaries that come with being a successful celebrity, and just her career and life in general. and of course, Brittany and Aleksandra are the main antagonists which is why they're in this pic.

Ren Hua Kuang, Ruzena Cermak, Yoko Asahina, Julia Roosvelt, and Patrick Davis belong to me
Jackie Turner and Brittany Gabor belong to @askkassandragf-v-2
Meng Yao, Yu Zi Shan, and Aleksandra Nowak belong to @pinkyberet
background belongs to whoever made it
