This is the face I make when I’m about to start up a section of slab. It’s actually a really crucial part of my slab climbing technique. Allow me to explain- it looks like I’m concentrating really hard to find holds, but actually, I already know there aren’t any. I’m just stalling. I’m imagining myself slipping and falling back down to the ledge I’m standing on, breaking an ankle, and having to tell everyone that I did it on a 50 ft pitch of 5.8. After I’m done thinking about that, I quickly look down at my shoes, trying to will them to be stickier. Then I quickly run through all the reasons I could give my partner for why I had to bail off of said 5.8 or whatever, realize none of them make any sense, and then tell myself that it’s supposed to be uncomfortable and if that’s not what I wanted I should have stayed home and watched TV. I’m pretty well-practiced with this technique now, and I can go through all of the above-mentioned steps in 5-10 seconds if I’m feeling mentally sharp and if I’ve had my coffee (add 5 more seconds for each consecutive day out and another 5 to consider all possible embarrassing helicopter rescue situations if in an alpine or other remote environment. Repeat with each pitch.) Acclimatizing with the @alpenglowexpeditions team. The goal always looks so far, but it's coming within reach. Today we made it to Pastakov rocks at 4700m, braving the wild Russian snow cat track 😁. 🗻 This mountain has so many hilarious scenes- Russians bathing in glacial melt streams, men posing shirtless for selfies, snowmobiles zooming around with scantily clad girls, skiers surfing the slushy cat track. #NorthsideSummitPush : return to the life zone. The struggle isn't just to get out of the "death zone", it's to get back to the life zone. After reaching the top, we want to get to thick air, warm temps and as far from the jet stream as we can. We rested at Camp 3 for an hour, rehydrating and refueling before packing our bags and returning to descent. Once again, a huge thanks to our #Phortse #Sherpa team, who dropped camp and carried our infrastructure down. #superhuman The weather didn't cooperate. As we packed, winds and clouds whipped up and light snow began. We made a speedy exit, knowing we had 6,000' of descent left before we would hit #everestabc. We arm-wrapped the fixed lines, belaying ourselves below camp, past the body of an Australian climber who had died the week before. Condolences to his friends and family. Camp 2, pictured, looked like a post-apocalyptic warzone with thick cloud rolling over tents shredded days earlier by gale force winds. Clearing the lines of rime as we went, the snow ramp between C2 and the #NorthCol seemed never ending. We paused to melt snow and drink before making the final push down the fixed lines. 18 hours after we started, we were home. Safe at ABC. Thick air. Real food. Coca cola. We all have different philosophies on training, especially when it comes to running. For me, I enjoy balancing strength training for overall physical ability and full exposure of my weaknesses. It's a tool which not only elevates me to be a better athlete and runner but have an overall balance of fitness. Plus, I've got a 27 lb. wiggling niño I want to be able to carry around for years to come. 💪🏾🏔🏋🏾🏃🏾 •• Todos tenemos diferentes filosofías diferentes sobre entrenamiento, especialmente cuando se trata de correr. Para mí, me gusta equilibrar el entrenamiento de fuerza para la capacidad física general y la exposición completa de mis debilidades.
