Infiniti erano gli impegni che la veggente cercava di far combaciare nell'arco di ogni giornata. Sentiva il bisogno di occupare ogni istante con un'attività e il fatto che tale opzione le permettesse magari di non pensare, era decisiva per lei. Dallo spiacevole incidente di Halloween le cose non erano andate così bene come avrebbe voluto. Le conseguenze degli interventi che aveva subito erano ancora fresche nonostante fossero trascorsi alcuni mesi, ma pian piano si stava rialzando. Doveva ammettere che era anche merito della dooddrear il fatto che non avesse dato di matto in passato. Con l'aiuto della musica sembrava esserne uscita, ed ora, in piedi come due normalissime ragazze a lanciare sassi godendosi quel tramonto così suggestivo. Rideva la Shape prima di annuire e portare indietro il capo per godersi anche quella brezza leggera. « Ci credi che non ricordavo nemmeno come fosse venire in questo luogo senza avere l'ansia del ricordo di Halloween? » Domandò come se ponesse un quesito alla sua stessa coscienza. Si voltò poi nella sua direzione prima di sorridere sinceramente. « Tu hai bisogno di una settimana libera, non solo una domenica. Riuscire a parlare con qualcuno di ciò che era successo non era semplice, soprattutto per Daphne che tendeva il più delle volte a tenere tutto dentro di sé. Eppure, ogni volta che si trovava in compagnia dell'amica, sapeva di potersi permettere di essere se stessa, senza la paura di essere giudicata. Osservò Judie compiere quel lancio come se nulla fosse, ma erano le sue parole a tradire un fastidio che la veggente poteva solamente immaginare.

Disse con un angolo delle labbra si alzò solamente per un brevissimo momento. Conosceva la situazione famigliare della dooddrear, ma raramente s'erano concesse di parlarne così apertamente.

« E' normale preoccuparsi... Non importa se siamo maggiori o minori, è compito di noi sorelle preoccuparci. Ancora non vuole vederti? E io, uhm, sì... Sto meglio, almeno fisicamente. THERE! I SAID IT!

But besides that entire fucking catalog, I find myself and the rest of the female population well under-represented.....Except of course for the huge fucking roster of female characters available.

Dirty Little Secret

Okay, it’s really no secret.  I’ve used this space before to share my love-hate relationship with pageants. I hate that any woman would participate in a swimsuit competition, even though they now call them “fitness” competitions.  Why not have them all wear some yoga pants and open a stuck pickle jar? But I absolutely love seeing the evening gowns. The more sequins the better. If there’s a talent competition with even one ventriloquist or a flaming baton, I’m in heaven. Truly.  The only thing that might thrill me more than sequins and batons is happening on Sunday....the Miss Universe Parade of Nations.  The national costumes, y’all. They kill me.  Can anyone tell me what Miss USA is supposed to be?

Winged victory?  Wonder Woman? A sexy, armored eagle trainer?  I’m not getting a particularly patriotic vibe from it, but maybe if the parts were explained. Take Miss Canada, for example.  No explanations necessary.

Snowflakes, maple leaves...I get it.  Do you get the feeling that her handlers didn’t want to invest a lot in the whole national costume thing?  “Do you have some cute pajamas? Good.  Now start fold up this tarp and make some cuts. Voila, snowflake!”  It’s cute, it works, and BONUS, she looks comfortable.  Not like Miss Germany...

“Here, put this Fisher-Price castle on your head and show everyone this lovely travel brochure.”  I would love to have been in on the team meeting that decided to stick her head in a castle. Someone doesn’t like her. I wonder if anyone cleared this with Julie Andrews?

I don’t know what this is.  A nod to their space program?  A Bond villain?   Okay, I had to look it up - the arm pieces represent the Petronas Twin Towers..  No explanation for the safety glasses.

I think Miss Italy’s is gor-or-or-orgeous! Absolutely stunning!

I  think  Great Britain is supposed to be Boudicca, the Celtic warrior queen. Maybe?  I only say that because I remember Hyacinth Bucket dressing up as Boudicca for the mayor’s fancy dress ball on Keeping Up With Appearances.  That’s the entire basis for my guess.  Otherwise I have to figure out why she has Poseidon’s trident,  a Roman helmet, and Dame Judy Dench’s dinner gloves.

I love traditional costumes like this one worn by Miss Korea.  No guesswork.

This elaborate outfit from Myanmar may give me nightmares.  Apparently the creepy marionette industry in Myanmar is is a source of national pride.

I don’t know what Miss France is supposed to (maybe a Moulin Rouge connection?) and I’ll bet the judges don’t care.  Yowza!

Miss Bulgaria wins the hot glue gun award.  Looks like she’s got everything from silk flowers to boy scout canteens attached to her skirt.

   I only saw a handful of the 80-something contestants. But I already know what my favorite costume is. Hands down, no question, It’s Miss Sweden’s contribution. You guys...

Pippi Longstocking!

I’d totally forgotten that those books that I loved so much were written by Swedish author Astrid Lindgren.  Oh, how I loved Pippi!  Her crazy antics, her feats of strength (shown here lifting her horse, Old Man), and her complete disregard for society’s rules, even her house - Villa Villekulla!  It was the stuff kids’ fantasies are made of.  Her father was a sea-faring adventurer who was also incredibly strong and he bought her the house and gave her chests of gold coins.  He was always off at sea and Pippi ran her own happy life, or at least  what we imagined as children that would be...no school, candy all the time, pet monkey, crazy escapades.  It seemed that authorities were always trying to put her in an orphanage and she always outsmarted them. Her full name was Pippilotta Delicatessa Windowshade Mackrelmint Ephraim’s Daughter Longstocking.   Oh, how I gobbled up those books! So yes, Miss Sweden’s costume hit me right in the feels.  She has my vote. So there you have it, now I have to watch the pageant on Sunday.  My secret shame is no secret.  My name is Nancy and I’m a sequin-holic.  Admitting you have a problem is the first step.
