A little love for Idlewild...
So it turns out that the flight from Heathrow to Halifax is--with breaks for coffee and meals--exactly long enough to start, fall into, fall in love with, and finish with a happy sigh, Idlewild by @judesierra.
I am always captivated by this author’s way with, not just language, but her way of conveying place and atmosphere in a way that doesn’t merely set the scene and give her characters a setting in which to interact, but also informs, gives complexity to, and heightens the emotional viewpoint of her characters (I still have such a vivid, almost tangible, memory of the treehouse in What It Takes and carry with me that sense of heart-plummeting devastation--oh the delicious agony of fictitious lovers!!-- over its painted over walls). And here in Idlewild, her newest book, Jude’s Detroit commanded my emotional investment nearly as much as did Asher and Tyler. I loved how the contrast of worlds, contrast of lives, and the dichotomous character of a city fuelled the deliciously drawn out dance of attraction between two men, and then breathed such amazing depth into their push-pull path to each other.
I have lots of thoughts swirling through my brain as I sit here, a little mushy-headed and jet-lagged but cozy in front the fire, but what stands out to me the most is that Jude Sierra’s books always leave me like this--content and happily wallowing in feels, with a head and heart full of the people who populate her worlds.
There is a good reason why @judesierra has become one of my favourite authors in Interlude Press’ incredibly talented collection of authors, and I highly recommend this as a read, be it in stolen moments over coffee breaks, devoured chapters at a time before bed, or in one straight sitting.

so to that get to konow your writer thing I kinda want you to answer all of them but if you'd answer one or more of these I'd be mega-happy! (I just want to get to know you okay? You're maybe my favourite) 1,2, 7, 8, 11, 16, 18, 21, 23 or 25. Any of those really and I'll be eternally grateful but you don't have to of course
Oh you're the sweetest nonnie !!What about all of them?1. Is there a story you're holding off on writing for some reason?I have been holding onto a sci-fi story for as long as I can remember, but I have decided to write it in 2018 so we will see2. What work of yours, if any, are you the most embarrassed about existing?EurghI may (or may not)Have written (or not)A rather terrible Harry Potter ficWhich I never finished and shall remain burried in the underbelly of the Internet m'kay?7. When asked, are you embarrassed or enthusiastic to tell people that you write?Mostly in disbelief because I have a hard time wrapping my head around itBut really it's more on the enthusiastic side ;)8. Favorite genre to write?Well the only kind I've written so far, romance with a side of realistic fluff11. What aspect of your writing do you think has most improved since you started writing?I really don't know. I know that I am getting better with each written word, but I cannot pinpoint the most definite aspect16. Are there any characters who haunt you?Only the ones I haven't bring to the light yet18. Were there any works you read that affected you so much that it influenced your writing style? What were they?I try really hard not to let other stories influence my style, but if anything, reading stories such as the ones written by @judesierra or @carriepack or @authorcblee makes me want to get better in my own way21. What do you think when you read over your older work? Most of the time, i am still enthusiastic (the funny ones still make me giggle, honestly) because I only post the stories I felt good about -- none of that embarrassment about past works for me !23. Any obscure life experience that you feel have helped your writing?Clearly my four months internship in a conservation studio in Chicago, completely cut from French speakers, has helped me writing in English! Overall i feel like me being an introvert has helped me being observant of human reactions and emotions, and thus helped me being a writer of Characters 25. Copy/Paste a few sentences or a short paragraph that you're particularly proud ofRight on cue, Charly slides her hand in that spot at the top of his spine, pressing him closer to her.“I love you, Charly, because it’s the most natural thing in the world to do after breathing and drawing.”She kisses him softly, passionate and restrained. “But you don’t want to make love to me?” she asks in a whisper against his lips.“For me, this,” he replies, holding her even closer to his chest, “is making love already.”

While staying at his grandmother’s condo in Key Largo, he signs up for introductory dive classes, where he meets Joaquim Oliveira, a Brazilian dive instructor with wanderlust. I’m a sucker for a good deal and a good cause. Bought all 4 of @judesierra books since I love their fanfic.
Maybe it’s just too early in the day but I’m having a freak out because now I can’t open my new purchases on my iphone. Why is it fanfic sites are easier to deal with than actual retailers? Grr. I’ll try again after more coffee and sunrise.

@moriahgemel That depends on what you know, who you've been talking to, and how much you've paid them for that top secret info! Just kidding. This new project is the first of my novels that takes place in a real city! It takes place in the city of Detroit. It's also the first of my novels to feature characters at completely different stages in their lives -- one just out of college and another, ten years older, trying to keep his business together years after his husband has passed away.

@carriepack I had to build the bread around the meat, so to speak :D I started the story, conceptually, in the middle -- when they were teenagers -- and had to puzzle out how they got there and what that meant for their future. I had the heart of the story, but to earn the ending and to make the beginning build there properly, I had to do a lot of moving back and forth mentally. Building and rebuilding and cutting. I know what happens in those seven years they are apart -- I had to know in order to be sure they get where they need to emotionally. Like many things, I had to know, even if I didn't write them. Then I knew I had a solid base under what I did write.
