"Who told you that the night would never end in day? Who told you that the sea of circumstances would ebb out until there should be nothing left but long leagues of the mud of horrible poverty? Who told you that the winter of your discontent would proceed from frost to frost, from snow, and ice, and hail, to deeper snow, and yet more heavy tempest of despair? Don't you know that day follows night, that flood comes after ebb, that spring and summer succeed winter? Hope then! Hope always! For God does not fail you. Don't you know that your God loves you in the midst of all this? ~ Charles Spurgeon
“Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. I will take away the chariots from Ephraim and the warhorses from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be broken. He will proclaim peace to the nations. His rule will extend from sea to sea and from the River to the ends of the earth. As for you, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit. Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope; even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you. I will bend Judah as I bend my bow and fill it with Ephraim. I will rouse your sons, Zion, against your sons, Greece, and make you like a warrior’s sword. Then the Lord will appear over them; his arrow will flash like lightning. The Sovereign Lord will sound the trumpet; he will march in the storms of the south, and the Lord Almighty will shield them. They will destroy and overcome with slingstones. They will drink and roar as with wine; they will be full like a bowl used for sprinkling the corners of the altar. The Lord their God will save his people on that day as a shepherd saves his flock. They will sparkle in his land like jewels in a crown. How attractive and beautiful they will be! Grain will make the young men thrive, and new wine the young women.” Zechariah‬ ‭9‬:‭9‬-‭17l

I really despised Sina Grace's "Iceman" run
Tumblr media
I wasn’t big on Sina Grace’s Iceman series. As a gay man, I didn’t really connect with it. I felt like Bobby didn’t get to do enough exploring, and that it felt like they made being gay a personality trait. It would’ve been nice to see a transition, along with other changes. If it was made now, I’d enjoy:
Have Bobby experiment with hookups, highlighting the emphasis on sex in gay culture. This could’ve also included more innuendo, butt gazes, etc–but in a very pg-13 way. Some of this would be implied rather than shown so the comic wasn’t just about sexuality.
Have more consequences/crossovers with more characters. The stories felt very self-contained, as if they all happened in Bobby’s head. Along with this, Daken needs to have more screentime if he’s gonna be the big baddie/love interest. Sina Grace mentioned he wanted them to be in an on-again, off-again relationship, so that’d be nice to see those details set up. Daken’s with Aurora now, so maybe mention he and Iceman had something brief going on in Krakoa before he got with her.
Gay friendships. Allow Bobby more time with Northstar, Kyle, Prodigy, Shatterstar, Anole, and maybe even Wiccan, Hulkling, and Speed. It’d be great to see the guys bond as gay men and just as heroes. Maybe also acknowledge how Rictor and Bobby went on a (awful) date, as well as Shatterstar flirting with him over a decade ago.
Allow Bobby to have options. After Judah and Daken, he’s only linked to Simon Lasker (who leaves the team at one point) and Christian Frost, who is a boring and cute-sy bf to Bobby, but the couple lacks passion. I’d enjoy more guys for him to date, such as Somnus, or going back to Simon Lasker.

THE BIBLE BOOK OF GOD
Zechariah 14
he Coming Day of the Lord
14 Behold, a day is coming for the Lord, when the spoil taken from you will be divided in your midst. 2 For I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city shall be taken and the houses plundered and the women raped. Half of the city shall go out into exile, but the rest of the people shall not be cut off from the city. 3 Then the Lord will go out and fight against those nations as when he fights on a day of battle. 4 On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives that lies before Jerusalem on the east, and the Mount of Olives shall be split in two from east to west by a very wide valley, so that one half of the Mount shall move northward, and the other half southward. 5 And you shall flee to the valley of my mountains, for the valley of the mountains shall reach to Azal. And you shall flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.
6 On that day there shall be no light, cold, or frost. 7 And there shall be a unique day, which is known to the Lord, neither day nor night, but at evening time there shall be light.
8 On that day living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea and half of them to the western sea.[e] It shall continue in summer as in winter.
9 And the Lord will be king over all the earth. On that day the Lord will be one and his name one.
10 The whole land shall be turned into a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem. But Jerusalem shall remain aloft on its site from the Gate of Benjamin to the place of the former gate, to the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the king's winepresses. 11 And it shall be inhabited, for there shall never again be a decree of utter destruction. Jerusalem shall dwell in security.
12 And this shall be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the peoples that wage war against Jerusalem: their flesh will rot while they are still standing on their feet, their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths.
13 And on that day a great panic from the Lord shall fall on them, so that each will seize the hand of another, and the hand of the one will be raised against the hand of the other. 14 Even Judah will fight at Jerusalem. And the wealth of all the surrounding nations shall be collected, gold, silver, and garments in great abundance. 15 And a plague like this plague shall fall on the horses, the mules, the camels, the donkeys, and whatever beasts may be in those camps.
16 Then everyone who survives of all the nations that have come against Jerusalem shall go up year after year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Booths. 17 And if any of the families of the earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, there will be no rain on them. 18 And if the family of Egypt does not go up and present themselves, then on them there shall be no rain; there shall be the plague with which the Lord afflicts the nations that do not go up to keep the Feast of Booths. 19 This shall be the punishment to Egypt and the punishment to all the nations that do not go up to keep the Feast of Booths.
20 And on that day there shall be inscribed on the bells of the horses, “Holy to the Lord.” And the pots in the house of the Lord shall be as the bowls before the altar. 21 And every pot in Jerusalem and Judah shall be holy to the Lord of hosts, so that all who sacrifice may come and take of them and boil the meat of the sacrifice in them. And there shall no longer be a trader in the house of the Lord of hosts on that day.

"The Dank." From the Book of Ruth 4: 8-12.
Tumblr media
We learn in the prior frame how Mr. Right must also be Mr. Right Now. We are not redeemed in the rear view mirror nor in the world to come, or even in the fullness of time, but right now. While it is true a tree must come into season, bloom, get pollinated and then set fruit before the time is right, adult human beings are not trees, we are always planting and reaping the fruits of our actions. Leaving the good fruits behind for whatever reason is not Shoftim, it is an unwise thing to do.
This is why I have been wetting my adult diapers over the fact Israel is unconstituted, that the US Gov is allowing a decade of capital crimes to go unpunished, how, after the Ukrainians personally asked me to save their lives, the filth Mike Johnson who has much more power than I do, threw them all into the fire without a care in the world.
Our future lives which are always in season at the right time as the Talmud says. Except are entering their final frost because mankind does not wish to understand how to spend its time the way the Torah instructs.
I can't quite find the words to explain my anger over watching a bunch of dancing dumbfucks in the Republican Evangelical Community pendant to a discussion of murdering Jews in the movie The Fabulous Four. The sight of Donald Trump parading down a tropical avenue dressed like a transvestite, fagging it out after all the evil he has done nearly broke my gizzard.
So rather than waste time, I am pursuing this man this thing and his co. to the grave and will not let them live to harm another living thing ever again. Humanity needs these creatures to become its new dead husbands. Let's face it ladies, this marriage ain't gonna work a second time.
As with all things Torah, we have to look at this in two ways: the end of the old marriage and its horrible regrets and how to sieze the moment and be as happy as possible as rapidly as we can. God, serving as a narrator tells the Bridegroom to purchase and own all Israel and bring it back to life. He instructs us to wake up the traditions, to become famous, to rebuild the family. God gives the man His sandal, the equivalent of a marriage license and time starts again.
The only way we are going to recover from October 7 is to outdo it, to establish a Shabbos event no one will forget. After we win this war and the Mormons and Republicans everyone who betrayed us are dead, there must be an Event. The Book of Ruth explains:
8 So the guardian-redeemer said to Boaz, “Buy it yourself.” And he removed his sandal.
9 Then Boaz announced to the elders and all the people, “Today you are witnesses that I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelek, Kilion and Mahlon.
10 I have also acquired Ruth the Moabite, Mahlon’s widow, as my wife, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property, so that his name will not disappear from among his family or from his hometown. Today you are witnesses!”
11 Then the elders and all the people at the gate said, “We are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman who is coming into your home like Rachel and Leah, who together built up the family of Israel. May you have standing in Ephrathah and be famous in Bethlehem.
12 Through the offspring the Lord gives you by this young woman, may your family be like that of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah.”
In the myth of Tamar + Judah found in Vayeshev, Tamar, "the fertile palm tree" who is a lot like Ruth is forced to live in widowhood. She finds a young goat, conceives, retrieves the Signet of Israel and is able to marry.
Marriages in Judaism enable what is believed to merge with what is practiced. Marriages maintain the flow of time and ensure what has to be done to achieve Shabbos at the end of a particular cycle is done.
Israel has been a widow for over two thousand years. The last king of Israel died in 724 BCE, but the Signet, the Ring, the Cord and the Staff "the vow to protect hope" did not die with him.
The end of the marriage cycle we are in, the Rab says is called Perez, "to demilitarize". As at the end of the Torah, my generation will not see the Promised Land of a demilitarized Israel. There are too many wars and warriors willing to fight them in pursuit of the darkness that once claimed our nation. The data sugggests it will take three hundred years to rid the world of the causes of war. This information must force us to hearken back to the beginning of the passage and "start paying for it now."
History must record the people of Israel confronted the ancient evil, we won our battles and passed the legacy of the war against tyranny on to our sons and daughters, and they did the same. The narrator seems to suspect this and says our Lady Israel will need to be what is called Ephrathah, "to learn in split groups of thousands."
"The verb פרר (parar) means to split, divide and usually make more, expand or multiply. This root belongs to an extended family that also contains פרץ (paras), to break (through), פרש (paras and parash), to spread out or declare, פרס (paras), to break in two or divide, and פאר (pa'ar) means to branch out or to glorify.
The Bible is not concerned with political goings on and only with the evolution of the wisdom tradition, and thus with the rise of information technology (from cave paintings to blockchain). That said: our word "science" comes from the Greek verb σξιζω (schizo), which means to split, divide and make more.
Verb פרה (para) means to bear fruit or be fruitful. Noun פרי (peri) means fruit in its broadest sense. Noun פר (par) means young bull and פרה (para) means young heifer. Note that the first letter א (aleph) is believed to denote an ox-head, while its name derives from the verb אלף (aleph), to learn or to produce thousands.
The second letter, ב (beth) is also the word for house (or temple or stable). The familiar word "alphabet," therefore literally means "stable of bulls" or "house of divisions" or "temple of fruitful learning".
Noun פרא (para') is a word for wild donkey. The young bovines were probably known as fruits-of-the-herd, but donkeys in the Bible mostly symbolize lone wanderings and humility.
Noun פור (pur) means lot (hence the feast called Purim). Noun פורה (pura) denotes a winepress and פרור (parur) a cooking pot."
The Values in Gematria are:
v. 8: Buy it yourself. The Number is 4373, גדגז‎ ‎ ‎"get tickled." = tashlich, the intention to be happy but also tzedaka, "just."
v. 9:  “Today you are witnesses. I bought the property...from Elimelech Chilion and Mahlon."=
From "The Prince of Oaks as the top of the window." If one is able to look over the top of the head of the prince one wants to be the king. If the prince does not want or cannot be the king, the kingdom ends and its assets will be sold. Then they will have to be purchased back, what an arduous process. If only we can once again maintain the line of succession precent it from becoming corrupt!
The Number is 7651, זוהא‎‎, "the glamor! The luster!"
It's glamor until its time to work. God has already purchased all the glamor any of us could want- He says we must know what to do with it, which is why He says he have given us the Ruth Torah so we learn how to employ it:
v. 10: Today you are witnesses. The narrator says he has purchased Ruth Mahlon, "the widow of the vision through the window."
So long as we live we are a witness through a window. Should man no longer identify with all he sees, he should consult the Torah which starts by stating thigns cannot stay the same, they must always change. Only the essence of our happiness should remain unchanged.
The Number is 11735, יאזגה, yazga, "to be seduced by the widest opening."
As with its twin, the emphasis of the verb שגה (shaga) is on sin done inadvertently. Interesting are Scriptures' instructions on how this state of unrealized sin comes about:
Through wine and strong drink (Isaiah 28:7, Proverbs 20:1).
Through seductive women as opposed to one's loving wife (Proverbs 5:23).
Through ceasing to pay heed to discipline (Proverbs 19:27).
This verb yields two derivatives:
The feminine noun שגיאה (shegia), meaning error (Psalm 19:13).
The masculine noun משגה (mishgeh), meaning mistake. This word lies at the heart of the Yiddish word mesjogge, which is used to mean mistake or being crazy. In the Bible it occurs only in Genesis 43:12.
This thing zega, can be turned both ways. Most would jump at the opportunity to join a royal court (when such rare opportunities surface) without hesitation. Why not? Because in the modern world, such opportunities come with immense responsibility. Princes and kings, princesses and queens have to sign laws and mint money; their initiatives have to pass muster and return materially on their investments for the sake of the people and the nation.
When Willy bragged during a visit to a children's hospital, in front of little kids and the press that he hired thugs to kidnap, molest, and murder the Counts of Montpezat, one could easily assess the opening for this particular human being is much bigger than he. Such an unintelligent man cannot possibly be trusted with signing laws or the handling of a massive budget.
It would not be a mistake to turn William Mary into a dead husband and replace him and in fact that is what has to be done. Contract killings arranged by a head of state are illegal and very inappropriate and will not be tolerated.
v. 11:  Then the elders and all the people at the gate said, “We are witnesses. May we be famous in Bethlehem." Recall the gate is the where the tide comes in. The tide in this case is also where it goes out and clears the way. The Number is 11131, י'‎קג‎א‎, זקגה, "Distilled."
Distillation refers to the process of producing the Myrrh, the Balsam of God. One is only famous if one wins, and only if one is able to grow and produce the feedstocks and make the equipment can one enjoy the cologne. Cologne is a wealthy man's sport, it is worn by persons who have looks, money, leisure time, who serve in positions of importance.
The means to all of these for all persons is called Bethlehem, the fight to get bread. Which brings us back to Tamar and her goat:
v. 12: Through the offspring the Lord gives you by this young woman, may your family be like that of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah.” The Number is 9862, ט‎חוב‎‎, dank, musty.
The only reason a man wears cologne or woman wears perfume is to satisfy the lust for power and be seductive or be seduced. Seduction must not be mutual or it is no fun. So long as one is seducing over one's head one should give in. Otherwise, one should not give in.
So the challenge with recasting the Signet of Israel and our old traditions faster than time can pass is dependent only on the height of the peak of the vision. About this there are rules and Torahs, this we know, but first we must win this latest battle over our soil.
As for the rest, it should be compiled into an omnibus spending bill that will cover Ukraine, Israel, Sudan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran's water problems, all the war damage, flood, heat, and food and medicine shortages in the world and Administered all at once.

#DailyDevotion The LORD Takes Care Of Us
Tumblr media
#DailyDevotion The LORD Takes Care Of Us Psalm 147 12Jerusalem, praise the LORD! Praise your God, Zion! 13He made the bars of your gates strong and blessed your children within you. 14He brings peace to your border and gives you plenty of the finest wheat. 15He sends His order throughout the earth; His word runs very fast. 16He gives snow like wool and scatters hoarfrost like ashes. 17He throws down His hailstones like bread crumbs — who can stand before His icy blast? 18He sends His word and melts the ice, makes the wind blow and the waters flow. 19He speaks His word to Jacob, His laws and decrees to Israel. 20He hasn't done this for any other nation; they do not know His decrees. Praise the LORD! In this third section of the song the psalmist calls on Jerusalem and Zion to praise the LORD. One of the reasons he gives to praise the LORD is how He has made the gate strong and blessed the children in her. As long as the people living there will be faithful to the Lord and follow His Commandments and the Torah He would be with them. And it's His desire to do this but He cannot leave sin unpunished. It seems to be written after the Babylonian exile to the Jewish people who are most likely on their best behavior here. If you read through Ezra and Nehemiah we can see how the LORD brought peace to their border and gave them plenty of the finest wheat. The LORD takes care of them. See here how the LORD sends His order throughout the earth and His word goes swiftly to do His command. He describes how He provides water for the crops and for the people to drink in the land. Whether it be snow, or frost, hailstones, or ice, The LORD sends for peace things and then sends the wind blow to melt the ice to make it suitable for the land for the people. Here then he returns to the graciousness to the people of Judah and Israel the LORD has given. He has given His word his laws and His decrees. He had not done this for any other people at this time. They were to be witnesses of His word to the world. For this they were to praise the Lord. Now the Lord has given us a new covenant in which he calls all people of every language, tribe, people, and nation. Lord blesses the earth with all that it needs for the sake of his holy people everywhere. He sends the rain, the snow, the sunshine, the warmth comma and whatever else is needed Support his children in the world. The rest of the world is blessed because his people exist among them and the Lord provides for his people through the world. Not only does the LORD provide for us all the blessings of this world for us to survive in it, but like the people of Israel,He has provided us His word the gospel of His Son, Jesus Christ and we may know Him, love Him, and fear him. The LORD continues to provide for us word in sacrament so we may know His great love for us, His great Mercy for us, and His great sacrifice for us. The knowledge at once was once for the Israelites, the Lord has made known to the world now through the Church. For all these things, taking care of our bodily needs And taking care of our spiritual needs, we are called upon to give thanks praise and thanksgiving to the LORD our God, through Jesus Christ Our LORD. Merciful and gracious father, We do give you thanks and praise for providing for us all of our bodily needs, Most of all we are thankful and give You praise for sending Your son Jesus Christ into the world to redeem us. We thank you for sending the holy Apostles and all the ministers of Christ throughout the world, to bring us this good news if we may hear it and believe it. Have mercy on us and keep us always in this faith until life everlasting. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen Read the full article

they still sinned...     they still did not believe...
32 In spite of all this they still sinned;    despite his wonders they did not believe. 33 So he made their days vanish like a breath,    and their years in terror. 34 When he slew them, they sought for him;    they repented and sought God earnestly. 35 They remembered that God was their rock,    the Most High God their redeemer. 36 But they flattered him with their mouths;    they lied to him with their tongues. 37 Their heart was not steadfast toward him;    they were not true to his covenant. 38 Yet he, being compassionate,    forgave their iniquity,    and did not destroy them; he restrained his anger often,    and did not stir up all his wrath. 39 He remembered that they were but flesh,    a wind that passes and comes not again. 40 How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness    and grieved him in the desert! 41 They tested him again and again,    and provoked the Holy One of Israel. 42 They did not keep in mind his power,    or the day when he redeemed them from the foe; 43 when he wrought his signs in Egypt,    and his miracles in the fields of Zo′an. 44 He turned their rivers to blood,    so that they could not drink of their streams. 45 He sent among them swarms of flies, which devoured them,    and frogs, which destroyed them. 46 He gave their crops to the caterpillar,    and the fruit of their labor to the locust. 47 He destroyed their vines with hail,    and their sycamores with frost. 48 He gave over their cattle to the hail,    and their flocks to thunderbolts. 49 He let loose on them his fierce anger,    wrath, indignation, and distress,    a company of destroying angels. 50 He made a path for his anger;    he did not spare them from death,    but gave their lives over to the plague. 51 He smote all the first-born in Egypt,    the first issue of their strength in the tents of Ham. 52 Then he led forth his people like sheep,    and guided them in the wilderness like a flock. 53 He led them in safety, so that they were not afraid;    but the sea overwhelmed their enemies. 54 And he brought them to his holy land,    to the mountain which his right hand had won. 55 He drove out nations before them;    he apportioned them for a possession    and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.
56 Yet they tested and rebelled against the Most High God,    and did not observe his testimonies, 57 but turned away and acted treacherously like their fathers;    they twisted like a deceitful bow. 58 For they provoked him to anger with their high places;    they moved him to jealousy with their graven images. 59 When God heard, he was full of wrath,    and he utterly rejected Israel. 60 He forsook his dwelling at Shiloh,    the tent where he dwelt among men, 61 and delivered his power to captivity,    his glory to the hand of the foe. 62 He gave his people over to the sword,    and vented his wrath on his heritage. 63 Fire devoured their young men,    and their maidens had no marriage song. 64 Their priests fell by the sword,    and their widows made no lamentation. 65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep,    like a strong man shouting because of wine. 66 And he put his adversaries to rout;    he put them to everlasting shame.
67 He rejected the tent of Joseph,    he did not choose the tribe of E′phraim; 68 but he chose the tribe of Judah,    Mount Zion, which he loves. 69 He built his sanctuary like the high heavens,    like the earth, which he has founded for ever. 70 He chose David his servant,    and took him from the sheepfolds; 71 from tending the ewes that had young he brought him    to be the shepherd of Jacob his people,    of Israel his inheritance. 72 With upright heart he tended them,    and guided them with skilful hand. — Psalm 78:32-72 | Revised Standard Version (RSV) Revised Standard Version of the Bible, copyright © 1946, 1952, and 1971 the Division of Christian Education of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the United States of America. Reconnecting with the Divine Feminine
Tumblr media
I don’t think it’s groundbreaking or controversial at this point to say that all three Abrahamic religions are mostly patriarchal. Sure, we can talk about the veneration of the Virgin Mary, or the woman prophets in the Tanakh, or women saints in Islam. At the end of the day, though, we cannot overlook the fact that in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, God is a man. Since 31% of the world’s population identify as Christian and 23% identify as Muslim, that means over half of the people on Earth are completely disconnected from the feminine side of divinity.
Ironically Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are among very few religions that don’t embrace a feminine aspect of divinity. Patriarchal religion is treated like the norm in most modern cultures (again, largely because of the dominance of Christianity and Islam), but it has definitely not been the norm throughout human history. The Goddess, the Divine Feminine, has been a prominent part of human spirituality since before recorded history.
In ancient Sumer she was Inanna, the Queen of Heaven. In Egypt she was Isis, Lady of the Sky, Great of Magic, and Hathor, Lady of the West, and Sekhmet, Mistress of Fear. In Hinduism she is Shakti, the feminine principle that moves the universe. In Japan she is Amaterasu, the Great Illuminating Deity, and Izanami, the creatrix who rules the underworld. The Divine Feminine has taken all of these forms at different times and places, among many, many others.
Even the Abrahamic religions haven’t always been solely focused on masculine divinity. There is significant evidence that the Abrahamic God was originally part of a larger pantheon before becoming the sole object of worship in Israel and Judah. As part of a polytheist system, he had a consort, a goddess named Asherah. Rabbinic literature refers to the divine presence of the Jewish God as “shekinah” — interestingly, this is a feminine word, implying that this aspect of God is feminine.
The removal of feminine divinity from Christianity largely occurred during the fourth century, when Roman Christianity beat out other traditions as the sole “correct” Church. Before this some Christian groups, notably those in North Africa, had worshiped God as both Father and Mother — a masculine/feminine dyad, rather than the masculine trinity worshiped in Rome. Other groups identified the Holy Spirit as feminine, creating a trinity of Father, Mother, and Son. (Interestingly, these family triads were also common in Egyptian paganism.) When the Nicene Creed was created in 325 to standardize Christian belief and practice, it excluded these interpretations by affirming belief only in “God, the Father Almighty” and “Jesus Christ, the Son of God” and removing all mentions of God the Mother.
All of this does not invalidate the genuine, life-changing spiritual experiences people have had with modern Judaism, Christianity, or Islam. It does, however, prove that patriarchal religion is the exception, not the rule.
Modern paganism’s acceptance and veneration of the Divine Feminine is a large part of its appeal for many converts, especially women, genderfluid, and nonbinary people who do not see themselves represented in the mythology and art of patriarchal religion. The Divine Feminine is present in all pagan religions, though She takes different forms in different faiths.
In monist pagan paths like Wicca, the polarity of Goddess and God is seen as one of the primary ways deity makes itself known to mankind. In the words of Scott Cunningham, one of Wicca’s most influential authors, “The Goddess and God are equal; neither is higher or more deserving of respect… The Goddess is the universal mother. She is the source of fertility, endless wisdom, and loving caresses… She is at once the unploughed field, the full harvest, and the dormant, frost-covered earth.”
The Goddess and the God balance and compliment each other, and this balance is at the core of many neopagan religions. (There are some traditions that exclusively worship the Goddess, but we’ll talk more about that in a future post.)
In polytheist paganism, the Divine Feminine is present in the form of various goddesses who rule over different aspects of life and nature. It is not uncommon for polytheist pagans (or monist pagans, for that matter) to work with multiple goddesses, even goddesses from different historical pantheons. Some goddesses are explicitly associated with certain aspects of womanhood — for example, the Greek goddess Artemis is associated with virgins and young girls, while Demeter is associated with motherhood.
In many (but not all) polytheist systems, there is an emphasis on balance between gods and goddesses. One of my favorite examples of this is the marriage of the Morrigan and the Dagda in Irish mythology. The Morrigan, goddess of war, magic, and death, is married to the “good god” of life, fertility, and knowledge. Their union represents a balance between opposite, complimentary forces.
This brings us to another point I want to make, while we’re on the subject of the Divine Feminine: not all feminine divinities are passive, maternal, fertility goddesses.
In Western culture, women (and, by extension, feminine deities) are seen as the passive or receptive sex. This is largely a product of Victorian England, not an ancient truth.
Without knowledge of sex chromosomes, hormones, or the complexities of gender, Victorian thinkers developed a theory that men had a “katabolic” nature that was constantly releasing energy, while women had an “anabolic” nature that was constantly receiving and storing up energy. This concept of gender greatly influenced Western occultism and can be seen, for example, in Gerald Gardener’s conception of the Goddess as the passive recipient of the God’s energy.
This is a relatively new and very Western idea. In Hinduism, for example, Shakti is both the feminine principle and the energy that moves the cosmos. In the words of author Kavitha Chinnaiyan, “there is nothing in creation that isn’t a manifestation of Shakti.” Shiva, the masculine principle, is unchanging awareness — it is Shakti who possesses the dynamic energy necessary for creation.
I am by no means encouraging pagans to appropriate Hindu concepts. My point here is that no gender is entirely active or entirely passive, which is why so many cultures interpret gender in so many different ways.
Even within systems like traditional Wicca, which operate within a strict gender binary, neither gender can be completely tied down. In their book A Witches’ Bible, traditional Wiccans Janet and Stewart Farrar acknowledge that the “masculine = active, feminine = passive” model is an oversimplification. They use the example of an artist and muse. The (feminine) muse “fertilizes” the (masculine) artist, who “gives birth” to the resulting art.
Personally, I see the masculine/feminine polarity as a constantly shifting dynamic, with both sides giving and receiving energy all the time. Which side of the polarity is more active or passive depends on the situation.
Being pagan does not mean dedicating yourself to the worship of gender binaries, and it does not mean you need to uphold those binaries. God and Goddess are only two of many possible expressions of the Divine, just like man and woman are only two of many possible gender expressions.
Monist pagans see the God and Goddess as two halves of a greater, all-gendered whole. Polytheist pagans may worship gods and goddesses who fall outside of the gender binary such as the Norse Loki or the Egyptian Atum. In either case, divinity is seen as encompassing all possible gender expressions, not just cis man and cis woman.
The erasure of the feminine from Western religion and mythology means that the nonbinary nature of some deities is often downplayed or erased completely. (You’d be hard pressed to find a mythology book that doesn’t use he/him pronouns for both Loki and Atum.) Reconnecting with the Divine Feminine opens the door for other divine expressions of gender.
The end result of this acceptance of feminine and nonbinary divinity is a religious community built on equality between all gender expressions. No one is closer to the gods because of the anatomy they were born with or the gender they present as.
This paves the way for a religion where no one’s worship is restricted because of their gender expression. It allows for priests, priestesses, and priestixes. It allows everyone to fully participate in the rites of their faith, on equal footing regardless of gender or pronouns. It also creates an environment where practitioners feel comfortable exploring issues of gender and sexuality, knowing that they will not lose the support of their community if their identity changes.
