Devotional Hours Within the Bible by J.R. Miller
Tumblr media
Returning from Captivity (Ezra 1:1-11)
But little is known concerning the history of the people during the seventy years except what we gather from the allusions of the prophets of that period. We know, however, that under God’s providence the captivity wrought great good to the Jews. By severe discipline, they were cured forever of idolatry. It has been noted as a remarkable fact, almost, if not altogether, without parallel, that the Jewish nation survived such a dislocation and dissolution of all local and social bonds as the captivity produced. One reason for this was the religious faith that bound them together. Besides, through all their humiliating experiences the hope of a return to their own land, according to their prophets, lived unquenchable in their hearts. A still further reason is found in the fact that the holy seed was in this nation, and it was therefore the object of special divine care. It is remarkable how even the genealogies of families were sacredly kept during the captivity. When it is remembered that the line of the Messiah ran through the tribe of Judah, the importance of this is obvious.
The returning of the Jews, was not an accident in history. The Lord’s hand was in it: “That the word of Jehovah. .. might be accomplished, Jehovah stirred up the spirit of Cyrus.” God never forgets a promise. When the end of the seventy years drew near He set in motion providential movements which prepared the way for the return of the people. Not a jot or tittle of anything that God has ever spoken, can fail of fulfillment. Any word of His that we find anywhere in the Scriptures we may grasp and trust, knowing that He will make it good.
Notice the way the Lord brought about this return of His people. “Jehovah stirred up the spirit of Cyrus.” God can always find some way to reach men’s hearts. It may be remembered that Daniel was still living and stood high in the government. Possibly it was through his intercession that the attention of Cyrus was drawn to the Jews in their captivity. Cyrus was a Gentile but God’s dominion is not confined to His own people. His authority extends everywhere. Heathen nations are under His sway. He uses all the powers of the world for the carrying out of His own plans. Men come on the stage of action and carry out their own little ambitions, with no thought of doing anything for the Lord, unconscious that what they do is in any sense a fulfillment of a divine purpose. Yet without knowing it, they are really helping to execute plans of God made long before they were born. It is a comfort to us to know that the divine purposes are being carried out in all the world’s life. Even wicked men’s devices which appear to be destructive to the Church, are overruled to the fulfillment of God’s purposes of love.
Cyrus did much to open the way for the people of Israel to return to their own land. He sent forth the proclamation, “All of you who are his people may return to Jerusalem in Judah to rebuild this Temple of the LORD, the God of Israel, who lives in Jerusalem. And may your God be with you!” The proclamation was addressed to all the Jews who were in the realm. All who would, were invited to go to Jerusalem to help in the work but there was no compulsion. There is another temple to be built for the Lord, and again builders are wanted. The proclamation comes now not from a heathen king but from Jesus Christ Himself. Every one is invited to come and take part in this great work. The poorest and the smallest can do something.
The temple at Jerusalem on which these builders wrought has long since perished. But the temple on which God wants us to build shall stand forever, and everything anyone may do on this building shall be eternal. But how can we build on the walls of the heavenly temple? By doing all we can in this world for Christ. Our own lives are parts of the temple, and we may seek to have our characters made good and holy. Then we can strive to make other lives better, to bring other people to Christ, and to help build up in them a likeness to the Lord Jesus. The smallest things that we can do for Christ shall be like stones laid on the walls of Christ’s house, which is rising within the veil, like ornaments little touches of beauty on some part of the glorious building.
Cyrus became enthusiastic in his interest in the return of the Jews. He even sought to get his own people to help the captives in this. “Those who live in any place where Jewish survivors are found should contribute toward their expenses by supplying them with silver and gold, supplies for the journey, and livestock, as well as a freewill offering for the Temple of God in Jerusalem.” There was opportunity for everybody to do something. Some of the people would work on the walls and some of them would help by giving money. There always are these two ways of doing our part in the building of God’s temple. Everybody had a share in this work.
Only a certain number of the people volunteered to return to Jerusalem but many others encouraged and aided them. “And all their neighbors assisted by giving them vessels of silver and gold, supplies for the journey, and livestock. They gave them many choice gifts in addition to all the freewill offerings.” The people became enthusiastic. When it was known that certain people were to return to rebuild the temple, there sprang up in many hearts the enthusiastic desire to assist. God influences even worldly men, to help His own people in their work for Him. All the money in the world is the Lord’s, and He can get it when He needs it. There is a pleasant suggestion also in the words, “strengthened their hands.” They were encouraged by the kindness of their neighbors. If we cannot ourselves do much for the cause of Christ, even our little gifts encourage those who are carrying the heavy burdens. If we cannot give money, we can at least give cheer, prayer, sympathy; and ofttimes such help strengthens men’s hands even more than money would do.
One other notable thing Cyrus did. Nebuchadnezzar had taken away from Jerusalem the holy vessels of the temple. “King Cyrus himself brought out the valuable items which King Nebuchadnezzar had taken from the LORD’s Temple in Jerusalem and had placed in the temple of his own gods.” It was not the fault of Cyrus that these vessels had been brought to Babylon and profaned by being used in idol temples. But he found the vessels there, and now it would have been his fault if they had been left there. So he quickly provided for their return to their own place. As we go on our way through life, we continually come upon evils that other people have started. We are not responsible for the beginning of these evils but if we let them go on and do nothing to check them we will be responsible for their continuance. It is our duty to undo every wrong wherever we find it. If there are wrong methods in vogue in the business in which we become a sharer, we must instantly correct them.

Trump Stands By Waltz, Hegseth As Dems Gun For Their Jobs After Signal Leak
"Nobody was texting war plans," Hegseth said.
Congressional Democrats are trying to turn the Jeffrey Goldberg Signal chat revelations in The Atlantic into a major national scandal, and are gunning for the jobs of Trump's national security adviser Mike Waltz and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
"Nobody was texting war plans, and that's all I have to say about that," Hegseth told reporters within hours after the controversy was unleashed Monday. This was as the National Security Council issued an initial statement saying the message thread "appears to be authentic." Meanwhile... Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg threatens to release MORE war plans texts after being included in group chat
The Atlantic editor who published some of the war texts from Donald Trump's administration is considering releasing more of the group chat.
Jeffrey Goldberg, the magazine's editor-in-chief, told Tim Miller on the Bulwark Podcast his team is mulling over releasing the full trove of Signal app messages. 'My colleagues and I and the people who are giving us advice on this have some interesting conversations to have about this,' Goldberg told the podcast. 'But just because they're irresponsible with material, doesn't mean that I'm going to be irresponsible.'
Social Security chief: DOGE access to systems revoked after court order
Leland Dudek, acting commissioner for the Social Security Administration (SSA), said as of Monday the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) no longer has access to the agency’s systems in an effort to comply with court orders.
Dudek submitted a declaration confirming that DOGE employees’ access to systems containing personally identifiable information (PII) or systems of record was revoked. He also claimed Elon Musk and Amy Gleason, who were named as DOGE Defendants, have never had access to SSA systems of record.
Speaker Johnson Issues Warning: Congress Has the Authority to Defund and Disband Federal Courts (Video)
It appears that Speaker Mike Johnson has finally woken up to the threats by radical leftist judges who have taken over the White House and US executive branch of government.
Johnson on Tuesday warned that Congress has the authority to defund these radical leftists who are running a legal insurrection against the country today. Since returning to the White House on January 20, 2025, President Donald J. Trump has been met with an unprecedented onslaught of legal challenges from far-left activist judges and groups determined to sabotage his second term in power.

Daily Devotionals for November 12, 2024
Proverbs: God's Wisdom for Daily Living
Devotional Scripture:
Proverbs 28:2 (KJV): 2 For the transgression of a land many are the princes thereof: but by a man of understanding and knowledge the state thereof shall be prolonged. Proverbs 28:2 (AMP): 2 When a land transgresses, it has many rulers, but when the ruler is a man of discernment, understanding, and knowledge, its stability will long continue.
Thought for the Day
Wickedness produces many problems in a society; including rivalry amongst leaders. However, when a wise man rules a nation, it will produce stability. Dissatisfied people expect their leaders to create change, but all needed change begins with individuals. Every person is responsible for contributing to the betterment of our world. Evil people desire leaders who condone their wickedness. Righteous people desire leaders who control society's evil tendencies by making and enforcing righteous laws. Because the founding fathers of the United States were Christian, our laws were traditionally based on the Bible; and this influence has blessed our national life. We have turned away from this godly foundation, however, and God has begun to lift His blessings and protection from our nation. If we do not repent, we could fall as ancient Judah did:
"For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory. The show of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves. Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him. As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths" (Isaiah 3:8-12).
Sin, especially the sin of Sodom, brought Judah under a curse. For centuries, God had warned them that judgment would come if they did not repent. In Isaiah's time, the citizens of Judah, like those of Sodom, had grown brazenly open about their sin. About 150 to 200 years after Isaiah prophesied it, Israel reaped a terrible judgment: Jerusalem was destroyed and survivors taken into captivity in Babylon. God rewarded the wicked with the fruit of their sin, while rewarding the righteous with protection amidst national catastrophe. Judah endured many evils as warnings before reaping God's terrible judgment. We notice some of them in verse 12: it was unrighteous leaders who were causing the people to err from the paths of righteousness. Isaiah 3:4-5 lists others: wicked or immature rulers, young people dishonoring their elders, and the foolish behaving arrogantly toward the honorable. Similar evils, along with natural catastrophes, are seen across the world today, and are indications of judgment. Judgment can be averted if our nations will seek Him and forsake their sins. "Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD" (Psalm 33:12a).
Prayer Devotional for the Day
Dear heavenly Father, please give us godly leadership in our nation at all levels. Lord, we ask You to forgive us for our national sins of pride, adultery, lust, materialism, addiction, pornography, murder, idolatry and the many other sins that have grieved Your heart. Forgive me on a personal level for my sins. Lord, cleanse our hearts and our nation, so that we might be blessed and live godly lives. May we be a people who live and share the truths of the Bible, so that Your kingdom will come on this earth. I pray in the name of Jesus. Amen 11/12/2024 3:57:11 AM Jacksonville, Florida USA From: Steven P. I read a fic MONTHS ago that was a zombie apocalypse au schlatt/reader (slow-ish burn? nsfw size kink stuff was in the tags I'm frothing at the mouth) and it only has 2 chapters and I think about it everyday (i fear the author will never update it) and it got me thinking an au that's based on DayZ would be so good like it's his favorite game (he's so hot when he plays that game) and like if you teamed up with him he could be all protective or whatever... idk this isn't very specific but every now and then I remember that fic and I'm devastated that it hasn't returned - 🌪️
i have been wanting to write an apocalypse au for sooo long (i’m a whore for writing fics based on songs and albums and i’ve had the idea to write an apocalypse fic based on the american idiot album by green day for literally years) and schlatt would be so perfect for that type of au 😩 i haven’t watched anyone play dayz but i did just finish watching the last of us and my brain is going brrrrr overprotective schlatt would very much give joel miller energy

"The Soot." From the Book of Sirach, "The Manner of the Fern" 47: 23-25.
Tumblr media
Now it is time to discuss the brats. Solomon's souns are scourged in the Books of Kings and within Jewish history, but little is actually known about them. Sirach says:
Rehoboam and Jeroboam
23 Solomon followed his ancestors in death and left one of his sons to rule after him. This was Rehoboam, a man of little intelligence and great foolishness,[c] whose policies caused a rebellion.
There was also the unspeakable[d] Jeroboam, who led northern Israel in sinful ways. 24 His people became so sinful that they were exiled from their land. 25 They tried all kinds of wickedness until the Lord took vengeance on them.
1. Rehoboam (King of Judah)
Biblical Narrative:
Rehoboam was the son of Solomon and succeeded him.
His harsh response to the northern tribes’ request for lighter taxation (1 Kings 12) caused the split.
He retained only the tribes of Judah and Benjamin.
Scholarly Perspective:
Historicity debated: While there is little to no direct archaeological evidence confirming Rehoboam’s existence, scholars do not dismiss him outright but often treat him as a dynastic memory or eponymous founder of the southern kingdom.
The division of the kingdom is often interpreted as a long-term process, not a single dramatic event. Rehoboam’s story reflects Jerusalem-based theological and political ideologies.
Key Scholarly References:
Finkelstein, Israel & Silberman, Neil Asher. The Bible Unearthed (2001) – Argue the "United Monarchy" under Solomon and Rehoboam was likely much smaller and more limited than the Bible suggests.
Dever, William G. What Did the Biblical Writers Know and When Did They Know It? (2001) – Takes a more moderate view, suggesting some historical basis behind the united monarchy but questions the size and grandeur described in the biblical text.
Schniedewind, William M. How the Bible Became a Book (2004) – Highlights how biblical narratives about kings like Rehoboam were shaped by later concerns, particularly during or after the exile.
2. Jeroboam I (King of Israel)
Biblical Narrative:
An official under Solomon, he rebelled after being promised the northern kingdom by the prophet Ahijah (1 Kings 11).
He became the first king of the northern kingdom of Israel after the split.
He established rival cult centers at Bethel and Dan, using golden calves, to deter pilgrimage to Jerusalem (1 Kings 12:26–30).
Scholarly Perspective:
Jeroboam is seen by many scholars as a real historical figure, more likely than Rehoboam to be grounded in contemporary events.
His religious reforms are seen not as "paganism" but as legitimate Israelite religious practices outside of the Jerusalem cult, reflecting a non-centralized Yahwism.
The golden calves may symbolize the divine throne or presence, not idolatry in the modern sense.
Key Scholarly References:
Miller, J. Maxwell, and Hayes, John H. A History of Ancient Israel and Judah (2006) – Discuss Jeroboam as a likely historical figure and analyze the northern kingdom's early formation.
Coogan, Michael D. The Oxford History of the Biblical World (1998) – Frames Jeroboam’s role in the context of regional geopolitics and rivalries between north and south.
Grabbe, Lester L. Ancient Israel: What Do We Know and How Do We Know It? (2007) – Treats Jeroboam as possibly historical and analyzes the northern cult as a rival expression of early Yahwism.
3. Archaeological Evidence
No direct inscriptions bearing the names Rehoboam or Jeroboam I have been found.
However, sites such as Dan, Bethel, and Shechem (where Jeroboam is said to have ruled) show signs of early Iron Age fortification and cultic activity.
The Tel Dan Stele (9th century BCE) and Mesha Stele (Moabite Stone) reference events and conflicts close in time to the traditional period of Jeroboam and Rehoboam, indirectly supporting the existence of competing Israelite polities.
4. Theological Framing
Rehoboam is portrayed negatively as arrogant and a failure.
Jeroboam is a central figure in Deuteronomistic theology—blamed for leading Israel into "sin" by establishing alternative shrines. Later kings of Israel are often described as walking in "the sins of Jeroboam."
We do not read the Torah and Tanakh to muse over the past and feel a little extra Jewish today. They are targeted discussions of how man can grow his intellect and supersede all traces of the animal species into which we are born. In the modern age, this should be easy.
The Values in Gematria are:
Rehoboam and Jeroboam=1089, א'‎ףט, aber‎efet, "passed by that which was smooth and shiny."
"Efet is specifically, used in Song of Solomon 5:14 to describe the "smoothness" of the "מעה" (me'eh) of the beloved, which can refer to the abdomen or sexual organs. Additionally, in Ezekiel 27:19, the adjective "ashot" (עשות), derived from this root, is used to describe the quality of iron as being smooth or pure."
If Rehoboam and Jeroboam had done their jobs, the Kingdom of Israel would still exist. We do not often affiliate a job description with a king but they all have one. The problem is the fact they have what are called "privies", meaning most kings cannot be prosecuted for anything at all or very little. This is why there are so many problems with Charles Mary, who legally can take your kids and boys from you dress them up in Roman costumes and give them copious drugs for weeks at at a time and do all kinds whatevers to them with impunity.
Rather than use privies in the line of duty, that is what this person does. Being a little too oversexy while residing in public office or the Royal Palace is a mistake, especially for the people who need the power and privies of the king's pen and coffer for the sake of their survival.
v. 23: Solomon followed his ancestors in death. The Number is 8118, ףאיח‎ ‎, pich, "soot". "The futility of nothingness.'
God gave the Israelites Mitzvot "tombstones" in which to place their ashes. If one performs the Mitzvot properly, the sins of the past will become ash and one, as the etymology suggests shall be able to eat and drink of the essence of life.
Observe, Mitzvah 1: Belief in God.
Why? "I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage." — Exodus 20:2
Except He didn't. The Jews were not trapped in Egypt, they do live in the house of bonage. So this is not correct. The Number is 5402, ןדאֶפֶסב‎, aneda phasev‎, "to tell you, you are going to die."
"The Hebrew word "anda" (ענה) typically translates to "to answer, to reply, to respond, or to react". It can also be understood as "to sing" in certain contexts, but the most common meaning relates to verbal interaction and communication.
The verb פסס (pasas II) means to disappear or vanish. It's used only once, in Psalm 12:1, to express the disappearance of the faithful from among men.
The verb אפס (apes) means to end, to come to nothing or terminate (in presence or function). This verb relates to פסס in the sense of something spreading so thin that it vanishes entirely."
The Torah then is not a weird story about the Jews or a historical record of the ancient world. It is a song whose lyrics remind man God is eternal, we are ephemeral, and do not waste time.
God cannot take us away from the house of death forever, He can however teach us how to worry as little as possible about it while we may. Chief among these is do not waste time being angry.
v. 24: There was unspeakable Jeroboam. The Number is 12059, יבי'‎ןט, yeveya'‎nnet, "You will watch."
"The Hebrew word "watchtower" translates to Mizpah (מִצְפָּה, miṣpāh) or mispeh (מצפה). The term signifies a high place used for observation and protection, often associated with a lookout point or a place where one can watch over others."
We must always watch the mind and assess the minds of others before we act. Our planet has entered uncertain times because we have taken life for granted and are watching but not acting. Every soul has a duty to God to save time, as it will not be paid back. To allow weirdoes and whackos to steal it is a mistake.
See? None of this frame pertained to the original subject matter but we found a very useful thread.
The final Gemara is ףאיחןדאֶפֶסב‎‎, ‎‎ffiachanedapasev,
"Fachan describes the extending, bending, or otherwise manipulating of reality by means of a mechanical device — and this includes written text and any subsequent information technology, but also law and codes of conduct, and even fashion and artistic expressions.
Andapasev, "to answer and respond by passing over."
Our two Sons of Solomon did not either get exposed to the Torah or respond to it. As a result instead of leading the people of Israel in the observance the Passover, the gateway to long life and happiness, they passed such things by. We do this now every day. Perhaps their lesson will finally be learned by us.

Devotional Hours Within the Bible by James Russell Miller

The Assyrian Invasion of Judah (2 Kings 19:20-22; 2 Kings 19:28-37)
In the opening portion of this chapter there is an interesting incident of a letter received by Hezekiah from his enemy, the king of Assyria. The letter was full of threatenings and insults, designed to terrify Hezekiah and lead him to yield up the city.
“Ha!” said the insulting letter, “do you know what I have done to the other countries and cities which have been in my way? Do you suppose you can withstand my army which has swept victoriously and resistlessly over all lands? The gods of those nations have not been able to deliver their people from me, and do you imagine that your God can deliver you?
We are told that when Hezekiah had received this letter and read it, he took it into the temple and spread it out before the Lord. That was a beautiful thing to do. That is what faith should always do with any difficulty or perplexity take it to the Lord in prayer. We may one day receive a letter which will trouble us and which we do not know how to answer. It may tell us of some danger or some sorrow. It may be from an enemy and be full of unkind words. Or it may cause us perplexities in some other way. Now, the best thing to do with this letter is to spread it out before the Lord. We cannot answer it ourselves. We cannot defend ourselves against the danger, nor can we solve the perplexity; but God can take care of the matter, whatever it is.
Too often we may try to handle our own difficulties and to unravel with our own hands, the tangles which we find. We would better put them all into the hands of the wise Master, and keep our own hands off! Hezekiah prayed over this letter, asking God to bend His ear to listen and open His eyes to see. Then he besought God to interpose for His own honor and glory, that the Assyrian’s challenge might be taken up and that all the nations might learn that Jehovah was the only true God.
The conduct of Hezekiah in this case illustrates well a counsel of Paul’s in one of his Epistles. “In nothing be anxious; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.”
Prayer is heard by God that is one great lesson. We may safely lay all the interests of our life, all our dangers, difficulties, sorrows, and losses before God in prayer. The surest weapon we can use against anyone who is trying to hurt us, is to pray against him not bitterly nor with resentment but by laying all the hurt and danger before God, that He may take care of our interests for His own name’s sake.
There is proof here that Hezekiah’s committing of the grievous trouble to the Lord was not in vain. Isaiah sent to the king this message. “Thus says Jehovah, the God of Israel, Whereas you have prayed to Me against Sennacherib king of Syria, I have heard you.” It is a great comfort to us to know that God has an interest in our affairs, that we may consult Him about them.
It is good to know, what God thinks of the things that fret us. Sometimes people imagine that they are being wronged and persecuted, when in reality it is their own fault. By their own irascible temper or by their own selfishness or willfulness they bring upon themselves the ill-will or the unkindness of others. In the Beatitudes the Master was careful to say that it is when we are persecuted for righteousness sake that is, for being godly and doing good that blessing is promised. It is when men speak evil falsely against us, that the divine favor is pledged to us. Some people deserve injury and hurt from others; sometimes persecution is not because we are good but is righteous punishment for evil doing. The Lord does not take our part against those who are seeking our hurt unless we are blameless. We cannot appeal to Him for help to cover up our sins or deliver ns from them.
The little kingdom of Judah had no power of its own to make it secure or self-confident. In truth, it could not in its own strength stand against great and proud Assyria. But God was its refuge and strength. Omnipotence was encircling it, like horses and chariots of fire encamping on every side. Thus surrounded, thus sheltered in God, the kingdom could easily rejoice in confidence, for God would care for it.
Every Christian has the eternal God for a refuge. He can hide away in the secret place of the Most High, and laugh at every danger. One of the most wonderful words of the Bible, is that in which Paul says of Christians, “Your life is hid with Christ in God.” Truly, we can laugh at danger and at all enmity if we are hid in such a strong castle. We can look out at our windows and shake our head at the puny powers of evil which taunt us and threaten us. “The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and laughed you to scorn,” said the Lord to Sennacherib; “the daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you.” The words tell of the confidence which even the weakest child of God may have in the face of the haughtiest enemy, when sheltered by divine love and power.
The Assyrian king had defied Hezekiah and spoken contemptuously of his small resources of strength. “Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands.” The Lord answers, “ Whom have you defied and blasphemed? It is a wonderful quality of divine love that it puts itself in the place of those it loves . He who harms a child of God smites God in the face! He who taunts a Christian for righteousness, taunts God. He who does any unkindness to one who belongs to Christ, treats God Himself unkindly. We have this taught very beautifully in the New Testament in the Lord’s parable of the judgment, where we are told that he who gives food to the hungry and drink to the thirsty, and who shows mercy and pity to the sick, the stranger, the prisoner is showing the same kindness to Christ Himself! While he who passes by the hungry, the thirsty, the sick, and the stranger without helping them is passing by the Lord Christ Himself!
“That night the angel of the LORD went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning there were all the dead bodies!” But we need not worry ourselves over the question whether this angel was. God uses all things as His messengers, for the earth is His and the fullness thereof.

No, Xerxes I was not an 8-Foot-Tall Giant
For those who don’t know, the 2006 fantasy action film 300, directed by Zack Snyder, written by Snyder, Kurt Johnstad, and Michael B. Gordan, is based on the 1998 limited comic book series 300, which was written and illustrated by the American comic book artist Frank Miller. Both the film and the comic book are very loosely based on the story of the three hundred Spartans who allegedly fought and died in the Battle of Thermopylai in 480 BC.
In the battle of 300 we read of a mighty king named Xerxes.  As the movie portrays his kingdom was large and he wanted to be treated like a god.  When you start studying through the Bible you will notice that the name Xerxes appears in the book of Ezra. The book of Ezra covers the time in which the children of Israel are in bondage and are allowed to go back to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple.
In Ezra 4:6 we read about the reign of Ahasuerus.  It is interesting that when you investigate this name it is what the Hebrews called Xerxes.  Not only do we read about the great king Xerxes in the book of Ezra but we also read about his father king Darius and his son Artaxerxes.  With further studying you will notice that Esther from the book of Esther is Xerxes wife.  In fact when he returns home form his loss against the Greeks she was there to comfort him.
And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem. [Ezra 4:6]
