This whole situation has been so silly but I hope to find you well! I'm told you're an archivist too! Your reputation proceeds you, in a good way I promise! I was wondering if you'd like to share any tips of the trade! Maybe we could learn a thing or two from each other, you've been doing this a lot longer than I have.
Sincerely, Journey Frost
Resident Archivist and Historian
Lenore stared at the message, tilting her head as she silently reread it for at least the 33rd time. Her dead-eyed, static expression did not change, even as several questions spun in her head. During her initial examination of the letter, she felt an excited flutter in her heart. A new historic researcher in Pythonel wanting to talk about their discoveries was an insanely tantalizing proposition. Ecstasy however gradually turned to confusion, then suspicion.
This was over something that most would find trivial. All of the paper products of Pythonel, applying to the material made during and after the Good Days, were made with hemp. Handling both old and new written material, Lenore could tell this letter was made not with hemp, but with trees. That was a detail that could either mean nothing at all, or that something was deeply amiss.
The bookkeeper pondered what exactly she should do. Whatever was going on here was far too intriguing to simply dismiss and ignore, but Pythonel was a dangerous city as is. Someone or something from outside its walls could be just as deadly as everything else. Investigating the matter safely seemed impossible at first, until she remembered a gift she had recently reviced.
With haste, Lenore flipped the sign adorning her shop's door to "closed", and rushed up the ladder leading to the building's second story, her residence. It was rather small, unorganized, and eclectic, but it was the one place in this dire world she felt the safest. She rushed, almost danced about the room, collecting a sheet of paper, a ballpoint, a wax stamp set, and a small magic book. Then, she planted herself at her dining table in one of the four mismatched chairs that surrounded it. Everything was placed about to create an informal writing nook, sufficient enough for transcribing her response.
Now, for the last preparation. The pale human flipped through the pages of the tome, searching for the incantation that popped in her head. Aha, there it was! Fivfinlim Port Orioint, a spell that would teleport a small item to any location, as long as something from said location was present. Casting the spell was quite draining, but it was the safest way to contact this Journey character. Lenore placed the open book to the side and, at last, started to write.
--
Journey Frost,
I am most pleased to hear you enjoy my work. I pride myself on providing honest and detailed accounts regarding the history of this city I call home. Mind you, it is no easy task, but the challenges of research and exploration make my discoveries all the more satisfying.
I would be delighted to discuss my vocation with you. New faces in the community are such an encouraging thing, and I am most eager to hear about your studies. This coming Wednesday, I will be having lunch at Mortima's Spooktacular Sushi, just across from my store. You are more than welcome to join me there.
Lenore
---
Satisfied with her words, the bookkeeper stamped her message closed and rose to her feet, both her and Journey's letters clutched in her hand. She made her way to her most favorite piece of furniture, an ornate queen double bed with a white arch headboard covered in roses. Once she was comfortable, she held Journey's note to her chest and raised her reply in the air. "Fivfinlim Port Orioint," she whispered with a small smile. A blue puff of smoke whisked the paper into nothing, and Lenore promptly fell unconscious.
All that was left now was to wait.

When Hiccup returns to the hut, he finds their guest awake, and sitting up. That's good. That's an improvement. Before Hiccup could take a better look at the guy, Gothi parks herself in front of him.
"He's delicate," she scribbles on the ground. "The seas left its mark. Don't excite him too much." She punctuates those last two words with a tap of her walking stick.
Hiccup lifts both hands up. "Alright, okay! I'll be careful! You make it sound like I'm gonna give him a heart attack!"
"Are you?" A low voice croaks out.
Hiccup turns to face their guest. And yeah, okay. He gets where Gothi's coming from. The guy looks like he's two steps from entering Hel or Valhalla, probably Hel from the looks of him. He's thinner than Hiccup, but then again, Hiccup has filled out a little. He's got honest-to-Thor biceps now. But this guy - Hiccup has seen chickens with more meat on their wings than this guy has in his arms. And he's deathly pale, which makes sense given the circumstances. Seriously, Hiccup could trace the guy's veins - blue, nearly black, against his skin. Hiccup never had the good fortune of seeing a dead body - not the way Ruffnut and Tuffnut keep saying they have. But Hiccup hopes this guy will be the closest he'll ever get.
And yet... The weirdest part about this guy has to be his face. Hiccup can't figure it out but there's just something really weird about his face. It wasn't the eyes or the hair, both colored a common as dirt brown. So what...
"If you keep making a face like that, you'll really give me a heart attack," the guy murmurs, cutting through Hiccup's thoughts.
"I think you can manage one without any help..." Hiccup replies.
The guy snorts. "I'm feeling better if you can believe it." He nods at Gothi. "Can she talk? All she's done this whole time is stare at me. I swear I never saw her blink."
"Yeah... She does that. But um... good, I mean, about your uh health. Glad to hear it." Hiccup rubs the back of his neck. He's supposed to ask the guy more about himself, but outside of a straight up interrogation, he's never been good at the 'let's get to know each other' kinda stuff. They shoulda sent Gobber to do this, now there's someone that can get folks to tell stories. But Dad says it's all part of his Chief training, whatever that means.
"Thanks for pulling me out of the ice," the guy says. "This was mighty kind of you, and really, if there's any sort of payment I can offer, just let me know? Unless, I mean, my Mom spoke to you already?"
"Your... Mom...." Hiccup echoes. He can feel his face freezing up. His Mom? But there was never - They couldn't even find a shipwreck.
"Yeah, you know. A woman that looks kinda like me, almost like we're related or something." The guy goes on.
Hiccup's throat dries up and he clenches his jaw. This guy washed ashore with nothing but the strange clothes on his back. They figured him for dead before he started coughing like he was trying to throw up his lungs. It was... Yeah, Hiccup doesn't like remembering it too much. If this guy was that bad, then anyone else would be...
"And she keeps calling herself too old or that I'll give her gray hairs, but really she doesn't look a day over a hundred." The guy chuckles, or tries to, mostly he makes this wet, wheezing noise.
Hiccup opens his mouth, shuts it, then opens it again. "We... There was no one else in the water..."
He braces himself for the guy to start wailing, to froth up a rage - some kind of strong response. But the guy just tilts his head. And oh. Hiccup gets it now - the thing that's been bothering him about this guy's face. He's always kinda smiling. As if a grin is permanently pasted on his face, even when his hands are balled into fists, even when his shoulders are drawn in tight, even when there's literally nothing about him that matches a smile.
"Well... That's good, right? I was the only one in the water then. But so... Does my Mom know I'm here? Does my sister?"
Okay. Well. Now Hiccup's just confused. "No... How would we reach out to your family? Do they live nearby?"
"Uh... Yeah? I mean, maybe? Do you guys live anywhere near Hawthorne?"
"I... have never heard of that place."
"What? No. That can't be right. Hawthorne's barely the size of a village, sure, but it's the only settlement for miles!"
Hiccup slowly shakes his head. "No... I don't remember hearing of someplace like that."
At last, the guy's grin falls away as he scowls at the blankets. He chews on his lip, clearly thinking hard.
Hiccup tries to remember if he's ever heard of a Hawthorne. But he comes up blank. "I can -"
"Where is-"
They share a look. Now it's Hiccup's turn to crack a grin. "You first."
The guy blinks. "Oh, uh... I was um... Where am I now? Where is this?"
"Berk."
When the guy just gives him a blank stare, Hiccup folds his brow. Berk's been making a name for itself since they started the whole dragon co-existence thing. Surely, this guy would have heard all the rumors about them. Thor knows, they've been suffering the consequences from all that attention.
But this guy - there's not a shred of recognition in his expression. He could be faking it. Or 'the seas left its mark', as Gothi put it. Hiccup really wants to give him the benefit of doubt here.
"Berk, one of the isles in the Barbaric Archipelago? Home to the Hairy Hooligan tribe? No? None of that sounds familiar?"
The guy wordlessly shakes his head, fear starting to twist his face. Okay. That's not ideal.
"Is that... Is that anywhere near the New World?" The guy asks, his knuckles going white as he squeezes the blankets with both hands.
Gothi makes an irritated tap of her walking stick. Hiccup ignores her.
Did this guy just say the 'New World'? But that's just an old mariner's tale. And even if it was true, it's definitely nowhere near Berk.
The look on Hiccup's face must give him away because the guy locks up, eyes going wide, limbs closing tight and stiff.
"H... How... But I was just there! The pond was right by my village! How did this happen?!"
And that, Hiccup thinks, is the real question. Either this guy is a really good actor or he really has no memory. When he starts breathing faster, clutching his chest like it hurts, Hiccup makes a decision.
Dodging Gothi's stick, which tries to keep him away, Hiccup crouches next to the bed, putting himself at eye level with their guest. "Hey, we can figure this out, okay? You'll be back with your Mom in no time. Just... Just hang in there... Uhm..."
The guy looks at him, and there's that smile again - completely out of place given that he's literally one heartbeat away from a breakdown. "Ca-Call me Jack. And you?"
"Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third. But everyone calls me Hiccup."

*patiently waits for the list of titles you're giving a chance this Fail season*
WELL WAIT NO LONGER MY FINE FRIEND
Must-Watch
The 100 Girlfriends Who Really Really Really Really Really Love You
Listen, do you know how good a harem anime has to be for me to recommend it? This was one of the funniest manga I've read and the adaptation does it justice and more.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
Yeah, it lived up to the hype. Let's see if it can match the strength of those incredible opening episodes for its whole run.
Spy x Family Season 2
THEY GOD MASAAKI GODDAMN YUASA TO DO THE NEW OP WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME
Runners-Up
Firefighter Daigo: Rescue in Orange
I guess Brain's Base has decided that making Kennjirou Tsuda narrate everything is a recipe for success, lol. But this is shaping up to be a really strong mix of character drama and disaster movie, with the courage to really take its time and let the weight of its sequences settle.
Migi and Dali
I don't think I can properly describe this one except to tell you to watch the first episode knowing nothing about what to expect.
Overtake
Good season for adult workplace drama between this and Daigo. More of an inspirational sports story for F4 racing, but done really well so far.
Ron Kamonohashi's Forbidden Deductions
Honestly the detective side of this one is kinda weak so far. Thank god the characters are so entertaining and the production is so wonderfully energetic so you barely mind.
Shy
I was initially gonna recommend just reading the manga on this one, but then the second episode turned out lightyears better than the first, so hey. If you're looking for a superhero show to tide you over until MHA's next season, put this on your list.
Undead Unluck
Now this is a much better use of Fire Force's director than Fire Force was. Also, I have it on good authority that the gross groping gags vanish pretty quickly into the manga, so breathe easy on that front.
If You Have Time
Arknights: Perish in Frost
I'm still waiting to see if this can follow up on the first season's actually really good finale or if it'll settle into being just kinda boring again. Fingers crossed!
I'm in Love With the Villainness
I remember bouncing off the manga for this one, and the adaptation isn't exactly a stunner. But it's breezing through the most annoying parts of the opening chapters at a strong clip, so here's hoping it gets to the good stuff soon!
Stardust Telepath
Look, the main character's voice being really squeaky and annoying is usually a dealbreaker for me, but this has enough charm for me to stomach it for now. Love seeing CGDCT shows with this much energy in the production.
Uma Musume Season 3
I'll admit, that was probably the strongest opening episode we've had for an Uma Musume season. Will this be the moment the weird horse idol show finally clicks for me? Let's find out!
On Thin Ice
Ancient Magus Bride Season 2 Part 2
Ugh, this is really turning into a drag. I want to be on board with more Magus Bride, but the increasingly limp production and complete lack of focus on the main relationship are running my interest into the ground.
My Daughter Left the Nest and Returned an S-Rank Adventurer
I would very much like the main female character to gain a second personality trait beyond loving her daddy please and thank you.
Shield Hero Season 3
I... have no excuse for myself.
Already Dropped
16Bit Sensation Another Layer
Like I said:annoying squeaky moe voices are usually a dealbreaker for me. I made it seven minutes into the first episode before I couldn't stand listening to the protagonist for another second.
Bullbuster
I'll give you this, Bullbuster, it takes effort to take a premise like mecha vs monster battles filtered through realistic corporate and engineering bureaucracy and make it boring.
Faraway Paladin Season 2
God, did I really use to like this show? I'm sure I did, but this first episode really make me question what was ever interesting about it
Vexations of a Shut-In Vampire Princess
It took all of five minutes for the show to get into an extended sequence of the main character almost peeing herself in her pajamas. Hard pass.
