If you were about to write out a composition of ST characters and their sexualities, how would it look like?🤔🤔

I mean, how do you think, based on your observations and maybe some experience 🤔

i have plenty of these! thanks for asking. i’ll start with the ones i’m most sure about, then talk about some fun ones at the end. keep in mind that these are only how i view them and i think other sexuality theories are just great (and even better when there’s proof from the show to back it up)! 

mike, from what i’ve gathered, is gay. despite having a romantic plot line with el for nearly all of the seasons, their relationship has proven to just not work out— el because she is still growing as a person and didn’t know what friendship even meant before she met mike, and mike for… a multitude of reasons xD. mike has grown up among a small, close-minded town in a “perfect” family. nancy even talks in s1 about how her family’s always pretending, trying to act the best way because of how people perceive them. mike has had to grow up with stereotypical and heteronormativity in his daily life and has been told how love works by his parents, who obviously aren’t in love. he cares deeply for el all throughout s1 and beyond, but does not label it as romantic attraction until dustin and lucas (who both appear to be straight) say that it is. 

s3 was the real tell, in my opinion. not only were there the contrasts between the m*leven and byler fights but the end scene where mike had his eyes wide open during an unreciprocated kiss? “what the hell just happened here” being in the script? c’mon.

lastly for mike (and this has been pointed out before but i’ll repeat it), over the seasons el gets more feminine— and as she becomes more feminine, their relationship becomes unstable. this implies that he is not attracted to femininity. i’m not trying to blame this on el in any way, i’m glad she’s exploring her girly side. but in s1, she was said confused as a boy/told she looks like a boy almost constantly. no wonder it was easier for mike to take action on his “romantic feelings”.

okay, now for will! i think, based on heavy queer-coding and literal scenes like “lonnie used to say he was queer” and “it’s not my fault you don’t like girls”, he’s gay. he (and mike) are not included when dustin and lucas are chasing max around because they do not have crushes on her, and though he thinks she’s super cool, he doesn’t like her. he has lines like “i’m not gonna… fall in love” and “i’m a freak”. his "sexual identity issues” are even written brought up in the pilot script. at this point i’m scared of people who don’t think it will be canon, lol.

a few fun ones next, ones that most likely won’t be brought up in the show but ones i headcanon the characters as anyways— i think max is bi. a little bit because of the elmax scenes in s3, but mainly because i am queer and she gives me queer energy. el is omni (likes everyone) but favors men. joyce is bi for sure. ace dustin is my everything.

for the last 6 years ever since the legend of korra series finale aired in which Bryke chastised the audience for watching the show thru “hetero lenses” I have exclusively lived my life and consumed media thru HOMO lenses (has nothing to do with the fact I am gay and enjoy queer media analysis 👀). So, here’s a ranking of the st4 characters according to how difficult it was for me to analyze them thru these “hetero lenses”:

1. Max & Lucas - not at all difficult

These two are the easiest for me to read as not gay. Obviously being in a m/f relationship does not negate queerness altogether but for the sake of mainstream media as big as stranger things, it all but does. I -1/10 relate to them which is how I know, they are hetero, and it takes no effort for me to believe it. I used to read max as queer I guess due to her tomboy attitude but after seeing her in Taylor swift atw video I cannot unsee her as straight idk why this is just my brain

2. Dustin - not at all difficult

Dustin is a straight boy. He could possibly be hc as ace or demi if I think about it, but it takes more effort for me to think about a queer hc than accepting him as straight which is why he ranks this high up. I love 1 (one) straight boy

3. Jonathan - not very difficult

Jargyle is awesome and I love it. But also jonathan has the energy of the difficult alt guy that lands the popular girl and he just is never quite the same without her. They’ll part ways maybe for a while, but in the end he never searched for another love. They find their way back to each other and marry. He says, “I’ve only ever been with you.” It’s said as romantic, it reads a little creepy. She blushes. The end. So yeah outside of his alt boy “I don’t fit in” personality and his possible stoner make out sessions with his 1 true bro argyle it is not hard to see the hetero.

4. Joyce & Hopper - somewhat difficult

I ship jopper so hard BUT! Winona Ryder gives off so much queer lesbian energy that it does take me some time to push aside my gay lenses to accept that Joyce loves men (especially after s1 Joyce’s hair and outfit…). But they are, in the end, believably straight and the gays support them!!

5. Jane / El - pretty difficult

The early seasons she read so queer, I related to her so much. She didn’t understand gender norms and she didn’t look conventionally feminine and she just rocked all these cool outfits and looks and it was a vibe. However, by s4 it is clear to me she is a typical cis teen girl. The only reason she ranks #5 is bc it is pretty difficult for me to believe she is straight. I very strongly hc her as pansexual, she just seems like she has a lot of love to give and that gender would not be a barrier for her feelings (tho society would.)

6. Nancy - pretty difficult

I saw the excitement over ronance on this site after the trailers but I did not get it, Nancy is Straight TM and there was no proof they’d even get along let alone be gfs but Um, these scenes from s4 are making it harder for me to blindly look thru hetero lenses. She’s giving bi energy and it’d be so cute to see her flirt with Robin and be all bashful about it.

7. Steve - difficult

I have read steve as bi since s2? I think? And then when he accepted Robin after she came out I thought hm it’s the perfect opportunity for steve to explore his own sexuality! And s4 just strengthens my beliefs. He can’t get a gf?? Well to me that’s clearly bc he is discovering his interest in men and a gf just isn’t what he wants rn. However, I recently realized that steve has probably become the duffer’s self insert character so I am able to read him as straight and see thru the hetero lenses that his gf troubles probably root in I guess lingering feelings for *cringe* nancy 😩

8. Mike - very difficult

Mike is in the same boat as steve in my eyes. His actions just read gaygaygay panic to me. His interactions with will seem to give a hope to will that could only mean “omg my best friend also has a gay crush on me!!” However because this is a huge heteronormative show I am reluctantly able to see thru the hetero lenses that mike is probably just an idiot boy who is struggling with ~feelings~ and communication with his long distance gf, as well as just missing the closeness of his lifelong best friend. (But then I remember the scenes again and I’m like wait??? No way, it’s gotta all be gay!!)

9. Eddie - very difficult

Eddie to me is a gay man. I am able to put on the hetero lenses since he’s like a super popular handsome male character in this huge show in our wonderfully heteronormative world, which they certainly designed to appeal to the straight female audience (I think?? LOL) but ultimately I do not know enough about him yet to readily conclude that the writers have even made any conclusions about him. Because of this, it’s hard for me to believe he’s straight since it looks likely that he’ll die before any romantic storyline with him is addressed at all. He’s ~~ambiguous~~

10. Will & Robin - impossible

Soooo Robin is canon lesbian and therefore IMPOSSIBLE to see thru hetero lenses !!! Will is also pretty much canon gay man (I say pretty much because he is written and coded with gay storylines but he himself is only now arriving to conclusions about himself so it can only be canon in words once he is able to speak it. However this does not negate the canon fact that he is a gay character and has been this whole time even before he knew it. That’s just how life is for gay ppl sometimes). Will is impossible for me to view through hetero lenses and idk WHAT I’d do if they somehow pulled a reverse bryke, made will hold hands with a girl and then post series finale chastised us all for watched with our “homo lenses” (LOL COULD YOU IMAGINE?!?)

Bonus: Argyle - file not found

He just has that energy of creed from the office telling how he’d get so fucked up in the 70s on drugs that if gay shit happened then gay shit happened and I think that’s beautiful

Joyce: definitely Bi-spec, i know she has dated a woman at some point in her life.

Hopper: Straight, a slightly awkward Ally but nonetheless an ally

Eleven: Pansexual (deserves better than Mike)

Mike: either very straight or very gay. I think he's okay with other people being queer but the idea of himself being queer is something he's very hostile to, he needs to listen to his friends more. Sorry Mike, you can get better.

Dustin: straight, super ally, the type to do research and be literally the best person to come out to

Lucas: straight ally, bi wife energy all the way though.

Nancy: Pansexual, no comment she just is.

Jonathan: Bi, doesn't realize it for a long time though.

Will: asexual or demisexual probably. I'm definitely getting gay vibes too, i feel like he's the sort who's always kind of known though and is just scared his loved ones will be disappointed in him.

Max: Bi, the wlw vibes she gives me are too much to ignore.

Steve: Pan vibes, I headcannon that after approximately one conversation about queerness with Robin he realizes this

Billy: amab nonbinary, fight me.

Robin: lesbian ✨ (I hope next season she explicitly says it)

Murray: homoromantic asexual, this guy is fighting way too many governments to be allo and straight.

Eddie: I don't even know who this character is yet, but he is exuding pure queer energy so there we go

While it wasn't the happiest childhood story, it did mean that Jonathan was now pretty proficient with only a first aid kit and a few needles. He is also strangely good at calming people down - if the faction stumble across someone who may try to attack or a person who wants to join them, Jonno is quite good at talking them down and/or assessing if their goals are truly in line with what they say. Brief History:  When the outbreak occurred Jonathan was on his own; far from civilisation, far from his friends, far from his family. He was out deep in the field taking photos of fucking trees, surrounded by silence and solitude that were once a comfort to him. Those first few weeks were hell. Foraging for scraps to eat while keeping an eye out for any zombies that may want to ambush him was hard but what was harder was having no idea if his family was okay, if his mother and brother were okay. The day he stumbled across the Hawkins faction was an impossible miracle.

5 or more Headcanons:

Jonathan hates 'loud' or elongated periods of silence. Pre-outbreak he loved it, could relish in the ringing you get in your ears when the silence last a bit too long, but now it makes his hair stand on edge. Sometimes he tries, tries to sit there and let the silence hug him like it used to but all it means is that his thoughts become louder than life, and Jonathan doesn't need to hear what they have to say.

Because of the previous point he spends a lot of time humming to himself, it calms his nerves and lifts his mood.

Additionally, he's become quite chatty. Mostly insane idle chatter just to keep the silence away but it's almost a complete 180 from how he was in school

He's a bloody badass with a bow and arrow and probably with a crossbow too if he could get his hands on one. He's shit with a gun but if he has to fight short distance, he can wield a mean dagger too.

He likes being with the faction as he believes if he spends the majority of his time dealing with other people, at the end of the night he'll be too tired to think about his own issues.

He still takes photos if he can find a camera, if not he'll sketch. The pictures aren't very good but he enjoys capturing the moment any way he can.

Roleplay example (oh my go d this turned out kinda long I'm s o so rry)

Jonathan had experienced exhaustion before, it wasn't long ago that he was a teenager surviving through the school day with only crackers and energy drinks, he knew how it felt to experience such lethargy you wondered how you could possibly go on, however this was different. It was like he could hear his limbs screaming, could feel the individual fibres of his muscles tearing as he struggled to put one foot down in front of the other.

Briefly, he pondered if it was worth it to keep going. He hadn't been able to find a water supply and he was running dangerously low. Night would fall soon, and the zombies would come out full force. If he was trapped, surrounded by walkers, with no water and no idea how long he'd be cornered for... he shuddered at the thought and shook his head.

No. It wouldn't do to give up now, not when he'd come so far, not when he'd survived for so long. Then what would it all be for? He needed to persevere. For his friends, for his family. He clenched his fists. For his mother.

Finding Joyce's body was almost an out of body experience. Jonathan had almost convinced himself that it never happened. That the woma-- the zombie who had tried to kill him last week was not his mother, only looked like her. That it was just by chance she was in Joyce's uniform, circling the convenience store. That it wasn't the promise ring Hopper gave her, glinting on her right index finger. Because to believe anything else would be the end of his world. Was his mother even at work when the outbreak occurred? Was her uniform blue, or was it green? Did she wear the ring on her left or right hand? That part of Jonathan's life felt like it had taken place so long ago, Jonathan couldn't be sure.

And he didn't like to think about it

"Halt!" a voice cried out before a light was shone in his eyes, effectively blinding him, cutting his train of thought off with a crash. Immediately, he notched his arrow and aimed at the disembodied voice. "Whoa, whoa, whoa man. Let's not be hasty." Jonathan kept his aim. He'd learnt that human were about as trustworthy as the zombies, when it came to the end of the world every man seemed to be gunning for themselves and Jonathan couldn't blame them.

"Turn it off," he requested, and heard what sounded like a faint gasp from across him. Must have been more than one person then - so even if he did hit the girl who spoke, there would be others who would likely have her back. He hated being outnumbered.

"No can do hombre, who knows what you'll do if we can't see you. Drop the arrow, let's talk," Jonathan barely held back a scoff. He was not going to do that. It was already an unfair fight, there was no way he'd give them an even higher ground by disarming himself.

"Let me pass," he said, "I don't miss." He didn't like to threaten people, but he'd soon realised it was the only way to be taken seriously and to get away without actually hurting anyone. Not that he was adverse to shooting when need be, but his arrows were limited and best saved for the actual enemy, not stupid humans.

"Wait!" he heard a faint, still vaguely familiar voice call out and could barely make out some hustle and bustle happening across from him until a silhouette appeared amidst the light. There were more whispers and it looked like the girl who spoke earlier tries to grab the person who'd approached but they just pressed forward.

Once they were close enough that the light wasn't impairing Jonathans vision the boy understood why the figure had been so persistent. He dropped his weapon before he even had the time to consider whether the situation was a trap or not and immediately closed the rest of the distance pulling his younger brother into his arms.

Well, here we are with the first playlist/newsletter of 2021, and damn, what a start to the year we’ve had. Just last week, the US faced the hugely unsettling event at the Capitol & the COVID situation in LA has gotten so bad, it’s become even less safe to see my friends, even if it's on some chill shit.

Like many of you probably, I’m over it. After doing some journaling, I realized the continued and collective trauma of recent times had yet again taken a toll on my mental health, to the point where I lacked the energy & focus to engage with my usual stay-at-home activities. I found myself unmotivated to do much else besides mindlessly scrolling the internet (mainly on social media), which worsened my experience rather than inspiring it. 

The phrase ‘protect your energy’ can get pretty overused IMO, but during this time, it couldn’t ring more true. The difference between ‘doing’ and ‘being’ has become increasingly blurred with the internet, but understanding the distinction between the two is everything. These times make it easy to feel like we’re helpless -- like there isn’t much we can do, but when you zoom out a little bit and simply ‘be’ with what’s in front of you, you realize there’s plenty to get done. For me, ‘doing’ with what I have means actively working to improve the relationships with the people I live with, working on my passion projects, making some extra $$, and learning to give myself space to enjoy new things (TV or Video Games rarely keep my attention as I prefer spending my extra time hanging out with people, but I’m slowly learning to surrender to these activities lol). 

Earlier this week, I posted an article by Carmody entitled ‘Grief in a Grieving World,’ which explores the effects of trauma. In it, it's explained that whether it happens at an individual or a collective level, the shared result is a disassociation from the things you identify with (whether it’s your workplace, the people you hang out with, your daily habits, etc.,). While much easier said than done, living in your experience as presently as possible allows you to realize that the universe is much bigger than your grief, which I recognize can seem pretty dismissive, but is something I actively try to find peace with because I’m realizing -- grief is just a part of life.

Lastly, when I conceptualized this bi-weekly playlist/newsletter, I really didn’t have the intention to get so deep with it, but the events of the past year made it difficult for me to avoid. As we approach the 1 year anniversary of PLAY IT BY EAR, I know I sound like a broken record here, but I’m so grateful for those of you who’ve been supporting it, especially those who read these newsletters all the way through. It’s been the best outlet for me to cope with my thoughts this past year and to not feel like I’m going crazy, so thank you.

Rolling Sun/In The Night - Djavan Guy, Jiji Stfelix

WHERE: Found out about Djavan Guy through the homie Max Moor, who’s featured on the track ‘Rollin’

WHY: Djavan Guy is a Neo-Soul/R&B artist, but this particular track feels like it rides the edge of electronic pop, which is a genre I absolutely loved during my festival days (think Odesza, Louis The Child, Big Wild, etc.,). Super ‘in your feels’ type of music, which I often crave these days since we’ve lost our live music experiences ):

WHERE: Destin Conrad is actually an old Vine star but has been releasing some amazing R&B over the past couple of years. My old manager Drake put this track on my radar.

WHY: The song feels like it would’ve gone crazy during peak Soundcloud Era (when tracks like Don’t - Bryson Tiller & Too Deep - dvsn were popping off). I almost see it like ‘toxic relationship’ type R&B but SO necessary to bump to at times. 

Ain’t No Way - Aretha Franklin

WHERE: Another one off my friend Sophie’s SouLegends playlist (yes Sophie, if you’re reading this, I still listen to it regularly!!)

WHY: Just a beautiful example of what Aretha does best -- write music that showcases her vocal (& lyrical) power!

If You Wanna (Gianna Brezzo Remix) - J. Lamotta

WHERE: Another one I’ve seen posted from a couple different people.

WHY: J. Lamotta’s silky smooth voice paired with the production on this remix reminds me so much of Sade. Original version is amazing too, but damn, I love this one SO much. Also, I need to tap back into Jakarta Records (her label) because I remember finding sooo much fire back in the day off their old mixtapes. 

Privacy - tyler coolidge, Joyce Wrice

WHERE: I feel like I’ve known Tyler for years because of his connection to a lot of my homies from the bay and also cuz his tweets be crazy (in the best way possible). N8 on the coverart for this one as well! 

WHY: The groove on this track is ADDICTIVE. When people ask, “what’s your favorite type of music” this is def the type of shit I’d direct them towards.

Smile - Conor Albert, Alice Auer

WHERE: While listening to Mac Ayres new album, I was blown away by the production on the track ‘Nothing Else’ (reminds me of a Justin Timberlake/ Timbaland beat) & found Conor Albert.

WHY: Production & lyrics, and also the fact that Alice Auer is an incredible jazz vocalist that I discovered through Conor Albert’s music.

Sudden Death - Quelle Chris, Chris Keys

WHERE: n/a

WHY: I think it's tight how understated the vocals are in comparison to the rest of the mix, but come through just enough for you to hear & feel them. Lyrically, the track explores the realization that life is flawed, but not allowing that fact to define the entirety of the experience.
