Australia’s LGBTIQA+ Radio Station, JOY 94.9 is bursting with pride and talent, so what’s new on the community radio airwaves?

Today is World Radio Day, so we thought we’d find out what’s queer on the community radio airwaves.

Out loud and proud 24/7, Australia’s only LGBTQIA+ radio station JOY 94.9 has kicked its 31st year into high gear.

Their new grid is filled with diverse voices and programs.

In light of current world events, JOY matters now more than ever.

Something interim CEO Con Keramitsis & President and Chair Madeleine Swain shared in a statement.

“JOY’s role as a trusted, independent source for truthful and respectful queer storytelling has never been more critical.”

“Where other platforms fail, JOY continues to provide a safe, supportive space for our community’s stories,

“Stories to be heard without distortion or hate.” the statement read,

“Thirty years later, we’re still here,”

“Still visible, still proud and still advocating for the rights and dignity of all LGBTIQA+ people.

“The journey isn’t over, but every step we take strengthens our collective voice and brings us closer to a more inclusive society.

“At JOY, we remain steadfast in our commitment to building a more inclusive and compassionate Australia.

“For over three decades, we’ve amplified the voices of our community,

“Advocated for equality and ensured that the lived experiences of our people are heard, respected and celebrated.

“Our purpose is simple: to ensure that everyone, regardless of gender, sexuality or identity, can live authentically – free from discrimination or marginalisation.

Bisexuals back on the radio

This month JOY launched its programming for the first half of the year.

The grid is filled with returning programs, new diverse voices and a heap of pride.

One new show is Big Bi+ Questions, a dedicated bi+ show looking to answer the many questions our bi+ community faces and ask themselves.

It’s been three years since JOY has had a show on the airwaves dedicated specifically to Bi+ voices,

As one of the show’s hosts, it’s something Dave Samuel is very excited about.

“The show’s inspiration came from my experience in my late teens,

“Discovering that there was an identity other than gay or straight,” he told us

“Once I learned about that, I knew that was it,

“But I would get asked questions such as are you sure you’re not just gay or is it a phase?

“I also had a lot of internal questions about my own identity I would ask myself.”

“Not knowing people in the Bi+ community, this show is a space to come together and chat about these questions,

“Sharing the voices of the community as a whole, as well as a space for people to be able to listen, learn and understand the experience of their identity more.”

“Being able to create this kind of space on the community radio airwaves means a lot,” Dave said,

“For people out there listening, I hope it helps them on their journey or gives the other parts of the community a chance to find out more about us and our identity.”

“We all have questions, and creating space to comfortably talk about them and listen is going to be great.”

Connecting community across the airwaves

Now in its 31st year, all the voices you hear on JOY are volunteers.

Making time to uplift and connect the community.

Hosting JOY Daytimes since 2016, The Fabulous Adz loves being a part of JOY.

Giving him a way to engage with the community differently.

“Hosting daytimes is a great opportunity for me to talk music and topics I want to engage with the community for, and vice versa,”

“Our listeners are responsive, sending in texts and emails,

“Whether we agree or disagree, it is a fabulous place to connect and converse.”

“JOY is so important to me because it’s its own community,” Tuesday JOY Breakfast host Robbie Latour told us,

“And it has the reach to speak to community members that maybe can’t get to events or can’t get to things.

Robbie started volunteering on JOY in 2016, cohosting a bear show, a Drag Race show and more.

“We hear from the community all over on JOY,” he said,

“We hear from people living rurally or interstate and want to connect with the rainbow community.

“They can do that through JOY, which is really exciting.”

JOY’s airwaves are overstuffed

Other new shows to JOY’s grid include Living Life Single, looking to empower LGBTQIA+ singles.

A space where single experiences are heard, shared, validated and celebrated.

Plus a partnership with Melanated In Melbourne.

A syndicated podcast series chronicles the lives of two black, queer American besties living their best life in Melbourne.

Returning shows include Neon Nights taking you on a musical journey through the latest electronic dance/pop from across the globe.

Sunday Arts Magazine detailing Melbourne’s thriving arts scene, and Word for Word hosted by Jason Heath.

Airing Sundays, this long-standing, awarded program engages our queer communities through long-form interviews.

“This next grid is extraordinary,” new host of JOY Weekend Breakfast Demetra Giannakopoulos shared,

“JOY’s airwaves are overstuffed, and it is such wonderful and rich variety.”

Hosting two hours of radio on Saturday morning has given Demetra a new love for the show’s fun and flexible format.

“Each show I’ve usually done on JOY has had a theme that we stick to slavishly.”

“But on Saturdays, I have a cohost or someone texts in and we head off into a whole new tangent.

“And I love a tangent.” Demetra laughed.

Demetra is spoiled for choice for weekly cohosts to join her with so many new voices joining the JOY airwaves.

There currently isn’t an android app (I think it’s in the works though?). But yeah, you can just stream straight from the site.

JOY Media's Radiothon fundraising for LGBTQIA+ voices on air

JOY Media is holding its annual Radiothon, celebrating 30 years of helping our communities flourish as an Australian LGBTQIA+ community media organisation. They’re asking for your support to help them remain out, loud and proud.

Proudly self-funded, JOY is one of only four such organisations around the world that broadcast 24 hours a day on FM, DAB+, online and in web apps including the JOY app, iHeartRadio and TuneIn.

“Radiothon is our most important event for the year,” JOY’s CEO Isabelle James said.

“I’s a time where everyone gets together to try and raise as much money as we can for our community to keep JOY on our airwaves.

“There’s a bit of a misconceived idea that we have all this money. We’re a not-for-profit charity. But Radiothon is a time where people can feel and be involved with JOY and contribute to make a real difference within their own community by keeping us around.”

Fundraising with flare and pride

Starting on Saturday, JOY Weekend Breakfast hosts Paul Horwell and Ando McDonald were joined by everyone’s favourite weatherman Nate Byrne to kick off a big seven days of fundraising.

“It’s such a huge responsibility, I had mixed emotions about it,” Ando said.

“Sure I was excited, but what if we didn’t get a donation? Or what if we didn’t deliver the dollars that we need to stay on air?

Paul said, “Having Nate here gave us an extra bit of frisson in the studio for Radiothon. People don’t understand that a lot of our income comes from this particular time of year and this fundraising event.

“We are very fortunate to be in the space to be able to make content for our queer community, and we want to carry on doing it.

“I want to say thank you to everyone who’s donated or rejoined their memberships or renewed their memberships so far, because we really do need your support and we really love being here for you.”

Every dollar TOTES counts

While calling out for donations and memberships, this year JOY has also launched a Merch store with tote, bags, fans and more for you to purchase. So if money is tough, those who want to show their pride for the station can do so in other ways.

Founded in 1993 as a response to the HIV/AIDS crisis, JOY has evolved to reflect the growth, diversity and intersectionality of our stories and issues.

The latest season of the grid saw the addition of ‘The I in US’ to JOYs roster, by the Intersex community for the intersex community – a first of its kind.

While some shows have been doing crazy challenges to raise funds or live music acts and celebrities in the studio, ‘The I in Us’ team found that the importance of their show has others stepping up to show their support, with The Snow Foundation matching dollar-for-dollar any donations up to $20,000 during their show at 7pm Wednesday night.

“I am honestly so excited that The Snow Foundation are supporting us and JOY in this way,” ‘The I in Us’ cohost Jason Turner said.

“We recently had a listener in Zambia message us which made Paul and myself so happy. Knowing that our local content about and for the intersex community is going global and reaching so many people is so special.”

But there’s no time to get comfortable

At this morning’s count, the station had raised $131,098 for Radiothon. This is a great start, but the team don’t have time to get complacent. There’s only two and a half days left as they build towards a Mega Friday of fundraising.

“The community has been championing for JOY and getting around us, putting their hands in their pockets and really advocating for their community,” CEO Isabelle James said.

“But we absolutely still need for you to dig deep, contact your friends, family, and reach out and help us. We’re doing our bit for the community, and we’re asking others to do it too.”
