Thinking about finally throwing all my FF7 meta analysis and lore deep dive stuff onto a sideblog. It'd be reblogged from here, but I'd be able to organize it a little better, have a directory so people could find things more easily, and maybe it'd stop people from regurgitating things I say word-for-word for brownie points when they can just find and reblog the fucking original post(s).
#fandom vent#this happens WAY more often than I talk about#like constantly#not daily#but if I put up a ramble#there will always be 2-3 people on the twits or here#who immediately start saying the same thing#in the same words#acting like they're the ones that did the analysis#and it's really frustrating#y'all know I actually do research on this shit?#I check my sources#I review the source material#I get alternate translations to be sure#I read real-life research journals for scientific stuff#I research dates and real-world events and natural phenomena and religious history etc etc etc#it's not just 'nashi writes 2k words of bullshit and hits POST'#I do actual research for my analyses and my deep dives#I cite my sources whenever possible#I don't LINK all the time because that can kick a post from the tags#but I don't just make shit up#so people grabbing it and running with it as if they were the ones that did the work to figure it out#is super disheartening#my current big research project is figuring out if Reeve's surname#is actually rooted in Gaelic#because it's such a weird name#and it's possible that it's not spelled right#because it may be Gaelic#this is a theory that has not panned out yet#but I've been researching it on and off for weeks

Each of these will of course take a lot of time, but I'm willing to accept that challenge, if you guys want to read what I write.
#... I'm too shy to put it in the main post‚ but I do rely on you guys when it comes to my writing#your feedback is what drives me to keep writing#because even though writing should be for me‚ I have always approached it with a ''professional'' angle#I don't write fanfic for fluff or anything like that ... I write it to hone my skills‚ to practice writing techniques#research and foreshadowing ... literary devices and revision#it's hard to express properly‚ but writing is more than a hobby or something I'm ''good'' at--it's what I've always wanted to do#like ... professionally#as a published author#so‚ I want to try and focus more on writing--really and truly#for myself ... and for you guys#I want to give you guys my best work#peer-reviewed journal#scattered pages

After two weeks of having almost nothing to do at work except read scientific papers, I think I've finally gotten over being scared of them. Actually, I think I'm starting to have fun.
And then I was doing writing research on a totally different topic and I went wait a second. I can read scientific papers on this. I'm not intimidated by them anymore - well, not much. Maybe a tiny bit, for the ones outside my field, because last week I tried to read a botany paper and oh dear god the jargon.
But I read a medical journal about chronic widespread pain, which I probably have, and it felt very empowering. I understood most of the important bits, googled the vocab when I needed to, and I learned some things that might be important. I read a paper where actual doctors were saying 'people can have mental illnesses and also pain disorders. this does not mean their pain isn't real.'
And it feels very revolutionary that I can just... do that. I can have access to the same information as experts in these fields, and I may not understand it as well or have all the context but it's something. Something I didn't have before.
#i never thought i'd say this but i'm enjoying a literature review god help me#and it does feel really important that i can read about my chronic health issues in the same journals as doctors might read#like the information is out there and i can find it and i may not understand all of it but i can get some things#it feels like evening out the imbalance of power that is doctor patient relationships. i know where the peer reviewed literature is and#that means i can fact check#i don't have to just assume/hope my doctors are competent. i can check what their colleagues are saying.#and i know it's kind of risky having information and not all the context to understand it but i feel so powerless and i need something#i read this paper that was basically saying 'just because someone has chronic pain and a mental illness does not mean#that the mental illness is the cause of the pain.' and god. that's such a big deal.#that's huge#and now if a doctor tries to pull that shit on me i'll know they're wrong because the peer reviewed research says so#i knew it anyway but now i can back it up#hylian rambles

This doesn't even mention that it costs the authors who submit the articles thousands of pounds to publish in some journals!! You do all the work and pay for that with your grants, and then who pays for the publication? Well certainly not the PUBLISHER
#it's crazy given that journals can only exist because of researchers' work and writing!#all they do is coordinate the peer review process#and formatting#and admittedly curating#but it still seems really weird to me that you have to pay them thousands to let them publish your work#hmm#academia#studyblr

Advanced Nanomaterials as UV Photocatalysts for IAQ Monitoring_Crimson Publishers
Abstract
Nowadays, indoor air pollution has emerged as a major health concern for the indoor living population. UV photocatalytic indoor air cleansing has been found to be a promising technology. Effective UV photocatalysts have been applied to monitor/control the indoor air quality (IAQ) level. The nanomaterials based on nanocarbons, polymers, and nanoparticles have been applied in the UV photocatalysts. Indoor pollutants including gaseous pollutants, organic compounds, and biological pollutants have been removed using photocatalytic technology. Basically, nanomaterials act to degrade the environmental pollutants into environmentally safe forms, i.e., least hazardous for human health and maintain the IAQ level. Accordingly, through the use of nanomaterial-based UV photocatalysts, future solutions linking the IAQ regulation to the novel nanomaterials have been achieved.

Academic Bias and Bigfoot
The tendency of academics and researchers to favor some viewpoints, approaches, or results over others is known as academic bias. The norms, values, and expectations prevalent in their academic communities frequently impact this inclination. The selection of study topics, the interpretation of data, and the dissemination of findings are just a few ways in which this bias may appear. A fascinating instance illustrating the effects of scholarly prejudice is the field of cryptozoology, particularly with regard to the Bigfoot phenomenon. Bigfoot is a mythical ape-like creature that some people believe lives in forests, primarily in the Pacific Northwest of North America. Despite multiple sightings and anecdotal evidence, the scientific community primarily dismisses Bigfoot as fiction or a hoax. Academic bias and the strict standards of proof required for scientific study contribute to this dismissal.
Academic promotion and tenure processes frequently give precedence to research that conforms to established scientific paradigms and advances recognized fields of study. Researchers exploring contentious or out-of-the-ordinary subjects, such as Bigfoot, may find it challenging to secure funding, publish their work in respected publications, or receive peer recognition. The academic community's expectations of what constitutes credible and worthwhile work can deter researchers from exploring unorthodox areas of study. A key component of academic publishing, the peer-review procedure assigns specialists in the field to assess submitted manuscripts in order to guarantee the caliber and validity of research. This system can perpetuate preexisting biases even though it aids in upholding scientific standards. Research that questions the status quo or investigates topics deemed beyond the mainstream may meet with skepticism from reviewers. Therefore, scholarly journals often find it difficult to accept and publish investigations into Bigfoot or other cryptids. The peer-review process, promotion and tenure expectations, among other factors, can foster a climate that fosters academic bias. Researchers who stray from popular subjects run the risk of losing their jobs because people won't think as highly of their work. This dynamic perpetuates a cycle that rewards and acknowledges only specific kinds of studies, further marginalizing unorthodox studies.
Bigfoot's status as a fringe topic is mostly due to the absence of reliable scientific proof and the academic community's mistrust. However, this does not mean that there has been no research on Bigfoot. There are others who contend that the scientific community's hesitancy to discuss these subjects can inhibit curiosity and limit the investigation of the unknown. Encouraging an open-minded approach to unusual research could enhance scientific inquiry and expand our comprehension of the world, even though upholding strict standards is crucial. Academic bias is a major factor in determining the direction of research and acceptance of contentious subjects like Bigfoot. The promotion and tenure systems, along with the peer-review process, significantly influence academic bias. The scholarly community can establish a more diverse and inclusive environment for scientific investigation by acknowledging and addressing these prejudices.
