In Finland our Christmas songs are 99% about gloom, misery, life has kicked your ass, your family has abandon you or they have died, you go to their grave, you celebrate Christmas alone (either drunk or not) etc. No joy of any kind, ever.
Today I heard another horrible Finnish Christmas song. The song started like this:
A child finds his / her father dead on the snow, at the park. Police comes to inform them about this later. Their house is cold because their electricity has been cut off.
That was enough and I shut the Christmas radio...

Hyvä suomitumblr. Itse rakastan joululauluja. Jotkut vihaavat joululauluja. Suurin osa meistä pitää joistakin joululauluista, mutta vihaa toisia. Siksi haluankin joulun alla kysyä teiltä:
(Nää on melkein kaikki musta kivoja, koottu yksinomaan lauluista, joita olen kuullut vihattavan)

i have a fun idea
reblog and add your favourite christmas song that isn't in english (translations of songs originally in english are fine)
here's mine
youtube
Sylvian joululaulu is a poem written (originally in swedish) by Zacharias Topelius in 1853, which was then composed into a song by Karl Collan. it's about a poet spending christmas in italy, but longing for home in finland. there are many, many arrangements of this song, but i've chosen this one because personally i prefer to hear it performed by a choir

Hi Niu! What are your favourite christmas songs? :)
I LOVE Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire. It's Finnish version is also very cute, albeit less romantic than the original. I'll Be Home for Christmas has same sort of slow vibe that I love, with a little sense of yearning and homesickness.
From Finnish songs I like
Sylvian joululaulu (The Christmas Carol of Sylvia). It's very melancholic old song, and it has been voted as the most beloved Christmas song in Finland (you'll hear how the Christmas atmosphere in Finland is in this song) Since we're in Finland, there are heavy metal versions of this song. Here's one by Antony Parviainen and this one is by Ari Koivunen.
Tulkoon joulu (Let the Christmas arrive). Of course, there's also a heavy metal version of this one, too :D
Taivas sylissäni (Heaven in My Arms) by Suvi Teräsniska. This is a pretty new Christmas song and it's been written from the perspective of Mother Mary, who ponders if her small, just normal looking baby, is really a Heaven itself - and how she can keep him safe. This has also a melancholic tone, where Mary sings how the angel has left them, and the baby Jesus is crying, like already knowing how difficult his life is going to be. (Because honestly, we Finns can't make Christmas songs without some gloominess in it). Yes, you guessed, this has a metal version of Taivas sylissäni, too :D There's only a live version performed by Noora Louhimo, but it's really nice! Plays like any other metal concert :3
Yes, we do have heavy metal Christmas concerts called Raskasta Joulua (Heavy Christmas). They're extremely loved, typically sold out, and are hosted every single year around Finland as a tour.
By the way, you'll find Finnish heavy metal Christmas songs from Youtube and Spotify with a search Raskasta Joulua.

HORRIBLE CHRISTMAS SONG is playing in the radio! A woman sings (with very happy melody):
"Grandmother wants to die and so do I. Maybe someday elves hear our wishes, too." AND "Try to forget everyday worry while placing a candle on your sister's grave with frozen fingers."
Yep, welcome to Finland where we know NO HAPPY SONGS. Everything here is ALWAYS about dying, darkness and misery. No wonder we have so much mental health issues here...
The song is called Vuoden Pimein Yö by Maustetytöt. I can already say I hate this song.

Happy St. Stephen’s Day! Being very much a Christmas person, I felt like doing some doodles based on Finnish Christmas songs.
The first one is inspired by Kettu ja tähti (the Fox and the Star), which places the nativity scene in the northern Finnish scenery. The song mentions the Northern Lights, which in Finnish are called “foxfires”, based on an ancient belief that they were made by the tail of a giant fiery fox.
The second one is based on Sylvian joululaulu (The Christmas Song of the Sylvia), where Sylvia refers to small a bird caged in Sicily, who sings about his distant homeland. It is not widely agreed upon which bird the writer meant by “Sylvia”, but some believe he might’ve meant the robin, who was believed to be part of the genus Sylvia.
#Christmas#Finnish Christmas songs are typically somehow depressing that is just how we roll#like the original poem of the sylvia song actually has a last stanza about a man who dies in Italy without ever seeing his homeland#that is not part of the song we tend to sing though#when we were driving to grandma's there came in radio this mega sad Christmas song about a boy visiting his mother's grave#and my mom was like 'aw yeah' and turned up the volume#because the spirits were too high apparently
