Future Feeling by Joss Lake
goodreads
An embittered dog walker obsessed with a social media influencer inadvertently puts a curse a young man—and must adventure into mysterious dimension in order to save him—in this wildly inventive, delightfully subversive, genre-nonconforming debut novel about illusion, magic, technology, kinship, and the emergent future.
The year is 20__, and Penfield R. Henderson is in a rut. When he’s not walking dogs for cash or responding to booty calls from his B-list celebrity hookup, he’s holed up in his dingy Bushwick apartment obsessing over holograms of Aiden Chase, a fellow trans man and influencer documenting his much smoother transition into picture-perfect masculinity on the Gram. After an IRL encounter with Aiden leaves Pen feeling especially resentful, Pen enlists his roommates, the Witch and the Stoner-Hacker, to put their respective talents to use in hexing Aiden. Together, they gain access to Aiden’s social media account and post a picture of Pen’s aloe plant, Alice, tied to a curse:
Whosoever beholds the aloe will be pushed into the Shadowlands.
When the hex accidentally bypasses Aiden, sending another young trans man named Blithe to the Shadowlands (the dreaded emotional landscape through which every trans person must journey to achieve true self-actualization), the Rhiz (the quasi-benevolent big brother agency overseeing all trans matters) orders Pen and Aiden to team up and retrieve him. The two trace Blithe to a dilapidated motel in California and bring him back to New York, where they try to coax Blithe to stop speaking only in code and awkwardly try to pass on what little trans wisdom they possess. As the trio makes its way in a world that includes pitless avocados and subway cars that change color based on occupants’ collective moods but still casts judgment on anyone not perfectly straight, Pen starts to learn that sometimes a family isn’t just the people who birthed you.
Mod opinion: I haven't heard of this book yet, but it sounds incredibly interesting! I'm excited to check it out now. Update: Got to read a library copy and quite liked it. What a weird little book with weird little guys.

whenever i remember my mutuals have Cared About Marvel Disease i feel so bad for them. you’re ruined for normal media forever now because you associate random frequently used plot points with how the mcu did them sooo badly.
#this is about tee watching ouat lady of the lake and comparing the infertility subplot to the avengers.#it was normal the way ouat did it they were not that weird about it and as a whole that show is normal about women#i am sorry that joss whedon ruined this for u forever#beth.txt#to be clear. yeah it’s weird to imply that infertility is the worst thing that can happen to a woman. but the way ouat has done infertility#plot lines has not been that bad. there was snow drinking that poison in lady of the lake which ultimately was cured#and i don’t think they were trying to say ‘this is the WORST thing that could have happened to her. i think it was just a way of showing how#the king wanted to take away something she wanted.#and the ultimate point of that storyline was about like the circle of life and whatever#and ouat is generally a pro-chosen family show so really none of this matters#can it be pro life at times yes. however they do all that for the drama not the politics#and then the other infertility plotline was maybe a little fucked but it was season 4 a lot of stuff was bad then#hate to say it. hardly the worst thing that happened in season four. i think that award has to go to the hook possession arc#or the rumpbelle fail marriage. i’m allowed to use ship names it’s not cringe when i do it i was 13 this show stopped me from killing myself#well the point is that it hurt my soul to see ouat compared to the mcu. they are not the same….#anyway. sorry tee that you have Cared About Marvel Disease </3 hoping for a cure

a rose out of ice frozen ground
aka the lakes AU no one asked for
Age: Sam is 34 ; Ruby is 18 Canon status: divergent
Reign isn’t destroyed but fuses with Sam once again but with Sam fully in control of Reign. For about a year, everything goes well, until a particularly stressful series of months lead to Sam losing control. Reign takes hold and while nothing particularly bad happens to anyone, word gets out about who Sam is in relation to Reign. The media has a field day and a half with it, and before long, Sam is forced to go on the run.
So, she does just that. She drops her day job, pulls Ruby out of school, and eventually they end up in a secluded town. It’s definitely the kind of place that is full of artists and no one looks too hard at you if you don’t look “normal.” Sam finds out it’s a safe haven of sorts for aliens who can’t entirely fit in.
For a number of years, no one really hears from her. Christmas and birthday gifts are exchanged in person because Sam comes to them, but she never stays long and she never says where she goes back to. She also makes a point of never being followed. They know she’s doing okay, that she’s surviving, but no one really knows what she’s doing with herself.
Then, one day, five years after Reign’s defeat, Sam returns to National City, for an art gallery opening. Her gallery opening.

can i ask for shy!camp counselor ethan? like he’s great with kids but he’s very reserved around the rest of the crew. and reader is kind of extroverted. basically simp!!!! ethan
want to know you better — ethan landry
word count: 1,183
pairing: camp counselor!ethan landry x camp counselor!fem!reader
summary: after y/n defended ethan to their crew, she finally makes a conversation with him.
author’s note: this one is a bit short bc i’ve been super busy with college😫 on the bright side, part two of “august” is almost finished, so that’ll be my next post! 🫶🏻
Y/N COULDN’T RECALL ONE MOMENT IN WHICH ETHAN HAD WILLINGLY TALKED TO HER, OR ANYONE ELSE ON THE CREW FOR THE MATTER. She was very curious about him, the kids loved him and he seemed so sweet, but he always stayed silent during meetings and when the staff gathered around to eat.
“He doesn’t make conversation with us but he’s perfectly happy around kids. That’s a red flag” Vince, a staff member said while looking at Ethan, who was making the kids play by the lake.
“I wouldn’t say red flag, it’s straight up creepy” Joss replied with a laugh.
“Stop it” Y/N glared at them. “He’s not creepy, he’s just shy. Besides, I don’t blame him. You guys can be real mean sometimes.”
“Aw, does Y/N have a little crush?” Diana teased her.
“Really, Y/N? On Ethan? He’s not your type at all” Nate said.
“And how the fuck do you know if he’s my type or not?” Nate raised his hands in surrender “Whatever, I don’t have a crush on him, I’m just not a dick like you guys.”
“Come on, Y/N/N. You have to admit he’s weird” Diana scrunched her nose.
“He’s not. He doesn’t talk, so what? Have you tried to make a conversation with him?” she asked them, and they stayed silent. “Exactly my point. We haven’t been the most welcoming people.”
“I just get a weird vibe from him” Vince said, shrugging.
“Yeah, he’s giving psychopath” Nate agreed, making the rest of them laugh.
Y/N rolled her eyes “And you’re giving world’s biggest assholes” she stood up and made her way towards Ethan and the kids, ignoring how they called her name.
When the kids caught sight of her, they started jumping in excitement. “Y/N! Please help us, Ethan is being boring!”
Y/N gasped dramatically “Oh, how dare he! What do you need?”
“We want to play with the water guns” one of the kids said.
The older girl crossed her arms in front of her chest “How do you know about the water guns? They were supposed to be a secret until tomorrow. Have you been spying on our meetings?”
“No! Ethan let it slip” they replied, making the camp counselor glare at them, and muttered ‘Traitors’.
Y/N laughed and Ethan swooned. She was just so pretty, and her laugh was angelic “Wow, you snitched on him so fast, you don’t deserve Ethan’s kindness.”
“Boo, we thought you would be on our side, Y/N/N!”
“Fine, I don’t want to lose my spot as your favorite counselor, so let’s bring the water guns” she said, making the kids scream in excitement.
“We are not supposed to” Ethan said in a low tone.
Y/N stared at him, the sound of his voice surprised her. It was deep and calm, and nice to hear “Don’t worry, we can change the day of the activity. It’ll be fun. Besides, you can get your revenge on them for handing you in.” she smiled playfully.
Ethan’s smile was unlike anything Y/N had ever seen. His pearly white teeth were hypnotic and he had the most beautiful boyish laugh Y/N had ever heard. Now she really wished she’d talked to him sooner, she would have had that sight for longer.
The two counselors walked towards the supply closet to grab the water guns, fully aware of the rest of the crew’s eyes on them. She sent a dirty glare on their way.
“I’m sorry, Ethan.” Y/N said. Ethan looked at her expecting her to go on “For not talking to you earlier this summer. I know you’re too shy to make conversation, so I should’ve been the one to start it.”
Ethan shook his head “It’s okay.”
“It’s not” she quickly replied. “Even if we’re here for the job, it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have fun. And you don’t deserve to spend your summer alone.”
“Thank you” Ethan smiled softly, his cheeks turning red. “I’m not sure the rest of the crew likes you talking to me.”
“I don’t care what those idiots have to say about me.” Y/N shrugged.
“Thank you for defending me earlier, by the way” he finally said. Y/N widened her eyes. “Yes, I heard. They aren’t exactly low talkers.”
“I’m sorry you had to hear that. It was awful, what they were saying.”
“A wise woman once said, I don’t care what those idiots have to say about me” Ethan said, in a weird period-drama kind of voice.
Y/N bursted out laughing and Ethan’s heart started racing “Those are some wise words indeed.”
“Can we play now or are you going to keep flirting?” the annoyed voice of a little girl said.
The two blushing messes holding the water guns shifted uncomfortably. They didn’t notice until the moment it was addressed, but they were flirting. And it felt good.
“Okay” Y/N said once everyone had their guns. “Let’s divide into groups.”
The kids exchanged smiles, and the counselors started to worry. Ethan looked at Y/N “They had schemed against us.”
“Kids…?”
“Attack!”
Before they knew it, the two authority figures were completely drenched. Y/N quickly grabbed Ethan’s hands and they started to run, the kids following their trails.
“Stop it, you monsters! You betrayed me!” Y/N yelled as she ran.
“You switched to Ethan’s side! Now you pay the consequences” they yelled back.
“Maybe… maybe we should stop” Ethan tried to catch his breath. “They’ll run out of water eventually. And I can’t breathe anymore.”
“Okay” Y/N agreed. “We surrender.”
The kids circled them once again, and they splashed them with water until their guns emptied. “Little devils” Ethan muttered as they fled the scene.
“That was fun, though” Y/N laughed.
The boy nodded “Your hair is sticking on your cheeks” Ethan laughed, putting her hair strands behind her ear. His deep brown eyes met hers and Ethan’s breath hitched. “You…” he shook his head and blushed “Never mind.”
“That’s the worst thing you can say to an over thinker. Now you have to spill it or I won’t be able to sleep until I know what you were going to say” Y/N told him, trying to ignore that she could still feel his touch on her skin.
“I don’t want to make you uncomfortable.” he sighed.
“Oh, shit. Do I have something in my face, in my teeth? Fuck, just te-” she asked embarrassed.
“I wanted to say you are beautiful.” he cut her off, not being able to meet her eyes. He glanced at his hands nervously.
Y/N took the chance to study his face. His puppy eyes were her favorite thing about him, she decided. But he also had beautiful long eyelashes, an adorable nose, and rosy cheeks to die for. His skin looked soft, and she couldn’t help but touch it. Y/N’s fingers grazed his jaw, making him look at her.
“And you’re gorgeous” Y/N said softly. “And I love how the kids seem to love you. You’re funny, and sweet and I want to know you better, if you want to.”
“I would really like that.” he nodded, smiling from ear to ear.

The Classical Music of Ride, Part I: Mozart’s Requiem
You can’t trust anything or anyone in Ride. People aren’t who they seem to be. Every action, every event is just a cover for something else.
Is Morse one of the idle rich? An Oxford drop-out? A taxi-driver's son from Lincolnshire? A man who’s just finished a prison sentence? A policeman?
Long post....
Is Bixby the filthy rich head of a gambling empire? Is he just a front for Harry Rose’s criminal empire? Is he Charlie Greel looking to win back Cathy or Joss Bixby looking to seduce Kay? Is he even himself or is he his hidden, evil twin Conrad?
Are the denizens of Lake Silence really Morse’s friends—sheltering him after the storm of Blenheim Vale and prison? Or are they a bunch of dysfunctional philanderers and addicts? Even worse, are they suspects? Criminals?
Using Mozart’s Requiem in this episode must have absolutely delighted the music staff because while a great part of its fame and mystique rests on the sheer accumulation of stories and legends that have grown up around it, almost none of those tales can be proven—and all of them have been challenged at some point. You really don't know what's real and what's not—right down to the music itself.
Was the anonymous “stranger cloaked in gray” who gave him the commission the only sponsor Mozart ever saw? Or did he at some point become aware that the Count, Franz von Walsegg, was paying for the work? Some people today are shocked to hear that Walsegg planned to pass off the Requiem as his own work—as a tribute composed in memory of his dead wife—but that was a fairly common practice for the aristocracy of the time. It was considered slightly shady, but the proper thing to do was to just politely nod and go along with it.
Did Mozart, his mind disturbed by illness in his final days, truly come to believe that he had been poisoned and that he was writing the requiem mass for his own funeral? Or was that tantalizingly dramatic detail added by his widow Constanze to drive up sales of the score after the his death? The couple was catastrophically bad at managing money and when her husband died, the widowed Constanze was left with massive debts and two small children. She needed to maximize any possible source of revenue.
Her story certainly captured the public imagination. Pushkin took that little tidbit about writing his own funeral mass and wrote a very short but thought-provoking play in which he cast Mozart’s contemporary Salieri as the envious poisoner and Mozart himself as a childish, spoiled, and petty genius. Peter Shaffer later adapted Pushkin’s work into the play, and later film, Amadeus. A surprising number of people today believe Amadeus to be not the work of imaginative fiction that it is, but rather a completely factual story of Mozart’s life and death.
Mozart worked on the Requiem up to the day he died at the age of only 35. It was the last piece he worked on. Most scholars believe the manuscript we have contains not only the last music he ever composed but possibly the last words he ever wrote.
As far as authorship is concerned, we know for certain that Mozart himself completed “in skeleton” the Introit, the Kyrie, and almost all of the Sequentia (Dies irae, Tuba mirum, Rex tremendae, Recordare, Confutatis). The last portion of the Sequentia, the Lacrimosa, was completed was the up through the first 8 bars.
The last words that he actually wrote were "Quam olim da capo — which instructed the musicians to repeat the "Quam olim" fugue of the Domine Jesu from the beginning. In yet another mysterious twist to the story of the Requiem, these actual last words were stolen—quite literally by tearing them from the manuscript—while the score was displayed at the 1958 World’s Fair in Brussels. They are still missing.
We are certain about the authorship of parts because we have the autograph manuscripts—the music in Mozart’s very own hand. The big question, however, has always been, how much the the rest of the Requiem can we consider his? The parts that were completed “in skeleton” basically had all of the “important” notes in place. Things missing include details like doubled parts that could fairly easily be extrapolated from what he had written.
In order for Constanze to receive her money from Walsegg, however, she needed to make it appear that Mozart had completed the work entirely or almost entirely himself before his death. Not only would this ensure full payment from Walsegg, it would also promote sales of the score to the public later. A work written by Mozart alone would far out-sell a work written by Mozart and “Mr. Competent-But-Lesser-Known-Composer.”
Today we know that at least two of Mozart’s students were involved in finishing the piece, with the majority of the work being done by Franz Süssmayr. What we don’t know, however, is how much of the completed work is purely theirs and how much came from Mozart’s notes and verbal instructions.
Some versions of the story indicate that Mozart gave detailed deathbed instructions and left many “little scraps” of paper with details of how to complete the composition. Other versions claim that this talk of “little scraps” is simply more of Constanze’s effort to maximize Mozart’s contributions and minimize those of others.
Regardless, we know that the completed Requiem was eventually sent (with Mozart’s counterfeited signature!) to Count Walsegg and dated 1792—which is rather odd in retrospect given that it was well-known that Mozart had died on 5 December 1791. It's always been yet another mystery.
The two excerpts used in Ride are the Lacrimosa, during the opening titles and establishing scenes, and the Confutatis, which Morse is listening to on his record player as he splits wood outside the lakeside dacha.
The Latin text of the first reads:
Lacrimosa dies illa, Qua resurget ex favílla Iudicandus homo reus: Huic ergo parce, Deus:
The equivalent translation (i.e. not the one used at mass, but a more literal translation) is:
Tearful [will be] that day, on which from the glowing embers will arise the guilty man who is to be judged: Then spare him, O God.
So Ride starts with tears and guilt.
I’ve always found it interesting that this text doesn’t even try to claim innocence, instead it very clearly asks that the guilty be shown mercy.
The Latin text of the second reads:
Confutatis maledictis, Flammis acribus addictis, Voca me cum benedictis.
The equivalent translation is:
Once the cursed have been silenced, sentenced to acrid flames, Call me, with the blessed.
This text always strikes me as coming almost from a child’s point of view. Basically one interpretation is, “Come and get me once you’ve taken care of all the bad guys.” I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions as to how that might apply to Morse post-Blenheim Vale and prison.
Next week: The Classical Music of Ride, Part II: Rigoletto or “Why keeping a person’s entire existence a secret leads to Bad Things.”
Special Bonus Section!!!
Parts of Mozart’s Requiem used in Endeavour:
Dies irae: completed by Mozart in skeleton* S4E4: Harvest (~2 min) (~3 min)

GMMTV 2024 Part 1 - Hot Tops
I did this last year, so I guess I'll do it this year too even though I'm salty like the Great Lakes in Utah about not getting JoongDunk, release dates for the remaining 2023 shows, nor Midnight Museum 2. Even though I have questions like if High School Fremeny is gonna be queer and why GMMTV is determined to make Earth seem old (Ossan's Love, really?!), there was a lot that I liked about this lineup like . . .
#1 - ON SALE Peaceful Property
I don't know if this show is a BL or not or what its name is, but I don't care. I'm gonna watch the hell out of it regardless. After enjoying New in The Warp Effect act wild, then Tay in Midnight Museum (thug tears!) be unhinged, I'm excited to see them play to those strengths in the Thai edition of one of my favorite shows, Los Espookys, because we have the rich kid who needs the help of the poor ghost hunters. It looks like a funny (and heartwarming) take on los espookys, so I'll be scared, but it has color coding which makes it a HOT TOP for me. - For the Heart
#2 - Wandee Goodday
Great was queer in Manner of Death. It was canon to me, so I followed him to Catch Me Baby where he clearly wasn't queer, but NetJames as the support were, so it was a win. So I'll be damn sure to follow this fine man on this wild adventure with Inn where he is playing an actual queer. Like he knows "he is queer and is already having casual sex with a guy" queer. It also features THOR, DRAKE and POND, while being directed by GOLF with the possibility of color coding, so who am I to argue with perfection. - For the Kinks
#3 - My Golden Blood
I don't like vampires, but I love camp, and nothing gets campier than this pilot trailer even if was unintentional. I laughed so many times during it that I'm going to treat this as a comedy whether it is or not. It had Neo and Mond while also saving some space for potential "older" vampires to show up (Papang anyone?). Fluke Gawin continues to take one for the team, yet stays winning, so thank this babygirl for his service, while Joss serves body. Amen. - For the Laughs
#4 - The Trainee
Everyone looks miserable in corporate America Thailand, which is realistic because it is soul-sucking and never-ending, but OffGun are getting to play adults AGAIN, and like I wrote last year - They are Kelly Clarkson. Even at their worst, they are better than every one else, performance-wise, and they have View, Piploy, and Sea with his beautiful side profile as supports. Because it is an office BL, I'm already rooting for it, and it features Gun crying which is only rivaled by Khaotung tearing up, meaning it's marvelous. - For the Adults
#5 - Kidnap
Both Ohms are in it with Title and a newbie, but I'm only showing up 42% for them and 58% for PAPANG! That's it! That's the reason. - For the PAPANG!
Honorable Mention - Pluto
It's really shitty of me to put a picture of the bully, played by THOR (again!), as the image for this when it is a GL, but the entire reason it isn't even ranked is because . . .
WHAT WAS IT ABOUT?!
There are twins? One gets in a car accident with her husband right after the wedding or on the way to the wedding? The other twins takes her place to figure out what happened? But falls back in love with her bestie? Or were they already in love? Or did the chick actually love the other twin? Make it make sense, Mary! All I truly understood was Thor & Baseball Bat. Everything else was confetti. - For the ???
Everything Else
As usual, I'm showing up for everything queer, so even if I'm not looking forward to them I'll watch them.
But Ossans' Love . . . really, GMMTV? *eye roll for making me sit through it again in another language*
#Peaceful property the series#Wandee Goodday#gmmtv 2024#my golden blood#the trainee#kidnap the series#pluto the series#when is part 2?#because it better have Midnight Museum 2#IT BETTER!#Hurry up and finish school Joong so I can get another series with Dunk

Happy Campers!
Z is having a great time at Pine Lake Camp. She is wearing AG’s Outdoor Play Outfit.
Xander is ready for fun at Maplelea Camp. His shirt, shorts and hoodie are from Maplelea. Bucket hat and sneakers are from AG’s Cargo Outfit.
Remi is heading back to Camp Wekandu. This is a camp for kids with Juvenile Arthritis, located in southwestern Ohio. I custom ordered this shirt from Etsy’s BellaDivas for a sweet (and very active!) little girl who goes to this camp. Very pleased with this seller, btw. Remi is wearing shoes from BellasDivas and her shorts and sunglasses are on loan from Joss.

Alright as it is Trans Day of Visibility (Hi still not cis, still here etc.) and the final day of the extended Trans Rights Readathon I thought I would post about a few more of my favorite books by trans authors because hopefully everyone will be reading books by trans authors and about trans characters/topics all year round. Because to me this day is about supporting others in the community as much as anything else. The world is pretty on fire right now so if you can support a trans creator, artist, organization or friend today (and beyond) then do it!
So here are a bunch of shorter reads: books, graphic novels, novellas etc. I didn't really notice how many novellas I had been reading recently till making this list, but there is something about a wel- written short book that just really works for me. Also a lot of these just have really creative or lovely concepts and I am a sucker for those. Plus the characters in these are soooo good! Also a lot of these have lovely audiobooks or e-books, hence me not having a physical copy (yet). Many of these have trans characters as well, but not all of them. Though most have some form of queer rep because I don't read much that doesn't. I included muliple by some of the authors, including sequels because... I just really like them and couldn't pick just one. Most of these authors have other books that are also wonderful. And these are just a handful of examples, there are so many fabuluous books by and about people who are trans.
Six Months, Three Days, Five Others by Charlie Jane Anders
Peter Darling by Austin Chant
The Companion by EE Ottoman
The Barrow Will Send What It May by Margaret Killjoy
Taste of Marrow and River of Teeth by Sarah Gailey
Even Though I Knew the End by C. L. Polk
Upright Women Wanted by Sarah Gailey
Nimona by Nate Stevenson
Gender Queer by Mia Kobabe
The Seep by Chana Porter
Future Feelings by Joss Lake
Pet by Akwaeke Amezi
The Deep by Rivers Solomon
The Black Tides of Heaven; The Red Threads of Fortune; The Descent of Monsters; The Ascent to Godhood by Neon Yang
Finna and Defekt by Nino Cipri Coffee Boy and Caroline's Heart by Austin Chant
ID: Slide one has a stack of 10 books on a teal background. Slides two through four have a white background and four book covers and a boarder of books in the trans flag colors.
