Dune: Part Two (O-Ton)...

Multicultural Children's Book Day Part 2
This year, I was also gifted The Jake Show by Joshua Levy! The book was published by Katherine Tegen Books, an imprint of Harper Collins Publishing (harpercollins.com). Joshua is Jewish Florida native who has written several middle grade books. Jake is a TV-loving kid who is being pulled between two different worlds: The devout "yiddishkeit" of living with his mother and the secular, STEM encouraging of living with his father. Shuffled from school to school and between these two worlds, Jake has mastered the art of masking, but with the guidance of some excellent friends (and a few close-calls along the way), learns that he can't be both the person his mom wants him to be and the person his dad wants him to be at the same time (let alone himself). I really connected with Jake and the need to perform differently for different groups of people. I also remembered the feeling of starting in a new school and feeling like it would only be temporary. While adjusting to the Jewish vocabulary in the beginning was a little difficult for me (Jake did a great job at providing subtitles for things a few chapters in), this book was a great read! Jake's story will resonate with readers trying to parse out who they are/who they want to be. I'm so excited to add this book to the shelves in my library! Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2024 (1/25/24) is in its 11th year! Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen founded this non-profit children’s literacy initiative; they are two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural diverse books and authors on the market while also working to get those books into the hands of young readers and educators.
Read Your World’s mission is to raise awareness of the need to include kids’ books celebrating diversity in homes and school bookshelves. Read about our Mission and history HERE.

Mukesh Ambani eyeing Thrive Capital stake
A group of global billionaires worth at least $123 billion are buying a stake in Thrive Capital, the venture-capital firm founded by Josh Kushner.
India’s Mukesh Ambani, Brazil’s Jorge Paulo Lemann and France’s Xavier Niel will join KKR & Co. co-founder Henry Kravis and Walt Disney Co. Chief Executive Officer Robert Iger in investing $175 million to purchase a 3.3% stake in Thrive.
“These extraordinary operators have built storied institutions, achieved geographic preeminence, ushered beloved brands to even greater heights, and pioneered entirely new industries,” Thrive said in a statement on Tuesday posted on Medium.
The deal values Thrive at $5.3 billion, up from $3.6 billion in 2021, when it sold a stake to a unit of Goldman Sachs Group Inc., according to a spokeswoman for New York-based Thrive. Its total assets under management reached $15 billion last year.
Thrive has repurchased the stake sold to Goldman Sachs and the stake held by the new syndicate is the same, Thrive said on Medium. The Wall Street Journal first reported details of the stake sale.
The investment represents a collection of some of the richest people from across the globe.
Ambani is the world’s 12th richest person, with a $84.7 billion fortune, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Lemann, with a net worth of $21.1 billion, is Brazil’s wealthiest individual. Kravis is worth $9.5 billion and Niel has an $8.1 billion personal fortune, according to the index.
“A lot of these folks have been involved in my life for quite a bit of time,” Kushner, 37, said in an interview with the Journal. “Now they actually have a vested stake in the firm’s success.”
Thrive was founded in 2009 by Kushner, the younger brother of Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of former President Donald Trump who served as a senior White House adviser under his administration.
It has invested in firms including Oscar Health Inc., Compass Inc., Affirm Holdings Inc., Opendoor Technologies Inc., Unity Software Inc., Hims & Hers Health Inc. and SKIMS, an underwear company created by Kim Kardashian.

GOP Playing with Fire as Potential U.S. Banking Crisis Looms
Josh Hawley joked about Silicon Valley Bank being "too woke to fail" last Thursday, joining Florida Governor, Ron De Santis and House Oversight Committee Chair, James Cormer in blaming "woke policies" for the bank's failure.
By Marco Di Dionisio
March 18, 2023
As expected, there is a rampant speculation regarding the factors at play in the looming U.S. banking crisis these days.
The question we should be asking, however, is how did we get here?
Was it the 2018 deregulation of financial institutions that the Trump administration passed? Was it the Fed's record pace of rate hikes? Was it a risky business model?
The truth is, all of things likely played a role. In the case of SVB, let's also add the selling to Goldman Sachs of a large bond portfolio, at a loss, in order to quickly shore up cash reserves. That alone, caused the stock price to tank, which further accelerated the bank's downfall.
Some politicians, however, are cherry picking from these factors to help push their party's narrative.
The GOP's ridiculous take that it was "wokeness" that brought on SVB's collapse was rightfully laughed at in financial circles, but there's nothing funny about what's happening here.
These situations are never binary, and treating them as such is not helpful when trying to establish a viable path forward. Even more so if it's being done with purely political motives.
There is almost always a series of factors at play when qualifying events like these materialize, and pushing silly theories to score cheap political points signals a serious lack of understanding of the situation, both in terms of identifying the causes as well as in providing plausible solutions.
It's difficult, however, to find plausible solutions when you have an opposition party hoping in disastrous economic data so that it can use it to attack the governing party.
It's the old, "Party before Country" adage, at its finest. But in this case, it's downright dangerous and irresponsible.
There's another old proverb that comes to mind here: "If you play with fire, you get burned".

Fairmont Creamery Company Ice Cream Building
2306 W. 17th St.
Cleveland, OH
Located on the edge of Cleveland's Tremont Neighborhood, the Fairmont Creamery Company Ice Cream Building, at 2306 W. Seventeenth Street in Cleveland, Ohio, has now been converted into active business space, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Fairmont Creamery Company was founded in Fairmont, Nebraska, near Omaha, in 1884—an early “national dairy” with operations stretching from the Dakotas to Buffalo, New York. Fairmont was a pioneer in milk can pickup and one of the first creameries to provide farmers with their own hand-operated cream separators. In 1948 the company was re-branded as Fairmont Foods. It also became a Fortune 500 company and was granted a seat on the New York Stock Exchange in 1959.
Fairmont Creamery’s Cleveland operation opened in 1930 in a five-story building at 2306 West 17th Street, directly across Willey Avenue from what is now the Animal Protective League. Designed with two floors of manufacturing space and room for 75 delivery trucks, the facility also could accommodate railcar delivery input and output through its lower floor receiving room. For decades, a variety of dairy products were processed and distributed at the Cleveland facility. Local residents bought ice cream cones at a retail window. Employees from Tremont and Ohio City enjoyed short walks to work.
In the early 1980s all of Fairmont Foods’ properties and subsidiaries were either sold or closed, including the Cleveland operation. The West 17th Street building stayed largely empty for roughly 30 years, save for a small nickel-chrome-plating business that worked out of the basement. Dust, debris, and an occasional squatter were all that occupied the remaining spaces.
In 2013, a trio of aggressive young developers—recent graduates of Oberlin College—stepped in and brought new life to the old building. Ben Ezinga, Josh Rosen, and Naomi Sabe, founders of Sustainable Community Architects, purchased the building for $450,000. Comprising federal New Markets Tax Credits; state and federal historic preservation tax credits; a JobsOhio grant; city vacant property initiative funds; private equity investment; and a Goldman Sachs construction loan, $15 million was poured into a residential/commercial renovation, which was completed in 2015. The repurposed creamery includes 30 apartments and several ground-floor businesses.
Sustainable Community Architects worked to retain and celebrate the building’s history. Walk-in coolers were transformed into bedrooms and gym locker rooms. Huge concrete columns and beams, along with brick interior walls (originally glazed for food safety) became interior highlights. Windows, doors, and signs were rebuilt in the 1930s style. According to Josh Rosen, “the building is a reminder that people make stuff in this city; we wanted to expose the building’s original features rather than hide them.”
At the same time, the property also incorporates the best of the new. Natural light permeates living spaces. Each apartment has a unique design and layout. A 3,500-square-foot rooftop deck offers a place to lounge, garden, picnic and enjoy panoramic views of downtown Cleveland. However, the best juxtaposition of old and new may be that Fairmont Creamery is concurrently a Cleveland Landmark and a site on the National Register of Historic Places, placed there on February 23, 2015, and conforms to modern eco-friendly standards such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) and Enterprise Green Communities.
The once abandoned 107,000 square foot Fairmont Creamery offers a variety of units ranging from efficient studios to spacious two bedrooms. Every unit features large windows, historic elements like concrete beams and exposed, yellow-glazed brick, and modern amenities. Underground garage parking is also available and multiple roof decks showcase 360º views of downtown Cleveland with more than 17,000 square feet of retail and office space. The building is once again an activate stop between Ohio City and Tremont after sitting vacant for more than thirty years.

Por qué los socios de Goldman Sachs están huyendo de la firma
During the 2007 subprime mortgage crisis, Goldman profited from the collapse in subprime mortgage bonds in summer 2007 by short-selling subprime mortgage-backed securities. Two Goldman traders, Michael Swenson and Josh Birnbaum, are credited with being responsible for the firm’s large profits during the crisis.[58][59] The pair, members of Goldman’s structured products group in New York City,…

Multicultural Children's Book Day 2024 Part 1
I was gifted Mightier Than the Sword: Rebels, Reformers & Revolutionaries Who Changed the World Through Writing by Rochelle Melander. The books is published by beaming books (beamingbooks.com) and includes illustrations by Melina Ontiveros. Melander is a public speaker and author working to encourage young people to change their lives and communities through writing. Her non-fiction book, Mightier Than the Sword does an excellent job at capturing the importance of writing across all different fields. She introduces important figures throughout history from a variety of different backgrounds and demographics with short biographies and how they used writing to improve their lives and/or the lives of those around them. I loved the inclusion of different writing prompts and believe this book will make a fantastic addition to my library shelves.

Method Man and Redman To Perform at Financial Super Conference "Future Proof"
This week's big event is a financial super conference, "Futureproof," with Hip-hop's finest as headliners. And it sounds astonishing. Future Proof This week in Huntington Beach, some of the most prominent financial minds in the world are hosting a super conference, "Futureproof." And this conference is designed to be an unforgettable event. The conference, widely recognized as one of the world's largest wealth festivals, has drawn the attention of financial enthusiasts and industry experts alike. And this year, hip-hop legends Method Man and Redman will perform as honored guests to add an extra layer of excitement. Future Proof Brings Hip-Hop to the Financial World For enthusiasts of the finance world, "Futureproof" will be a conference like no other. While it's not a novel concept, this year's edition is poised to stand out. According to CNBC, it's an event where social engagement holds as much significance as the substantive content. And in 2023, hip-hop is set to be a defining element. But what prompted this shift in format, and why incorporate hip-hop? The masterminds behind the event, Barry Rithotz, and Josh Brown, were motivated by a desire to inject fresh energy into the conference scene. In the words of Rithotz, "Audiences were growing weary of monotonous lectures and lengthy panel discussions predicting the future within the confines of massive, windowless conference centers. So, they envisioned a gathering that would be more sociable, interactive, beneficial, and enjoyable." And what better way to ignite enthusiasm and inspire attendees than by infusing the event with some out-of-the-box activities and the dynamic energy of hip-hop? Futureproof: Events The agenda is remarkably innovative and promises surprises that few would anticipate. Among the diverse lineup of activities, attendees will find Seaside Yoga sessions led by a Goldman Sachs Instructor, highlighting the event's focus on holistic well-being. There's the "Health is Wealth Surfing" experience for those seeking an adrenaline rush. Dance enthusiasts can groove to the rhythm in salsa dance sessions. And connoisseurs of spirits can engage in the spirited "Battle of the Buds: Wine vs. Craft Beer." But Wait, There's So Much More But that's just the tip of the iceberg. Attendees can also get hands-on with a pizza-making class and a sushi-making session, adding a delightful culinary twist to the conference. And for the traditionalists who crave financial insights, there's a wealth of knowledge from esteemed speakers such as Dan Ives from Wedbush and Jeff Gundlach of DoubleLine. Also on deck are Christine Benz, Jeffrey Ptak, Ben Johnson, and Nizar Tarhun of Morningstar. While Michael Batnick and Ben Carlson of Ritholtz Wealth Management will provide insight. And to top it off, there's a panel discussion on "Global Macro Predictions." Hip hop and Finance While hip-hop and the financial sector might appear to be in different realms, they are often intertwined. Many of hip-hop's elite artists and figures are talented musicians and astute entrepreneurial strategists with strong financial acumen. Many hip-hop artists also have diversified their income streams through ventures such as fashion lines, record labels, tech startups, and investments in various industries. This is primarily because they recognize the importance of wealth generation and financial empowerment within the hip-hop subculture and society. This extends to using their platform to promote financial literacy, encourage entrepreneurship, and address socioeconomic disparities. Hip-hop and the financial sector share common ground in their pursuit of economic success and financial empowerment. This makes it clear that these seemingly distinct worlds intersect and influence each other. Method Man, a Businessman Method Man, whose real name is Clifford Smith, has earned a reputation as a savvy investor. His foray into the business world includes a notable venture in 2019 when he delved into the world of Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) by launching MEFaverse. And what is MEFaverse? According to Capitalism, it's a fully gamified rendition of a comic book that operates within the Web 3 ecosystem. MEFaverse is a multifaceted project encompassing aspects of eCommerce, advertising, hip-hop culture, technology, pop culture, entertainment, and music. It's designed to provide an income stream for independent holders without relying on secondary market sales. Furthermore, Method Man has also diversified his investments into the cannabis market. In 2020, the Wu-Tang Clan alum founded TICAL (Taking into Consideration All Lives). What is TICAL? TICAl is an entrepreneurial venture dedicated to selling marijuana to black-owned dispensaries. So, if anyone knows the importance of understanding the ins and outs of the financial world, it is Smith. Futureproof Proof: Hip-hop and Finance Go Hand and Hand Hip-hop is more than just music. Hip-hop is a cultural phenomenon with a pervasive influence across all facets of society. This influence is perfectly exemplified by showcasing some of hip-hop's most influential figures at a conference dedicated to fostering financial acumen, literacy, growth, and independence. Not only is it something to look forward to, but it also promises a massive takeaway. As CNBC notes, who knows what could happen? Maybe Method Man will announce Wu-Tang Clan is going on tour and is launching an ETF. Written By: Renae Richardson Read the full article
