BARBIE Sounds
Mark Ronson 5. August 2023 on IG: “But it should always be a party…” - Greta Gerwig Andrew and I were SO damn inspired by the emotional draw of this film, its technicolour vibrations and enchanting performances, every note of music we wrote came from a true place of reacting to what we saw and how it made us feel. Sometimes we felt like bopping, other times we got WAY into our feelings. I mean how could anyone not?
The scene with Barbie and Ruth Handler discussing life and humanity and motherhood still gives me goosebumps just thinking about it. We spent at least a hundred hours on that scene, writing and rewriting, experimenting with melodies, tempos and orchestration and would have done a hundred more, that’s how much we felt the scene and wanted to do right by it. We pushed ourselves harder than we ever have on every piece of music here. We taught ourselves old gear, new gear. We studied. I had to damn near teach myself orchestration (luckily Andrew’s ahead of me in that department plus we had the amazing orchestrator Matt Dunkley). We had to find the sound of Barbieland. Greta loved the fat warmth yet artificiality of 70’s & 80’s synthesizers but she also craved the elegant romance of the orchestra.
As Barbie (& Ken!) go out on their journey to uncover their true selves, we worked to find the balance of both. We played a lot of the instruments, but had beautiful players like Questlove, Roger Manning, the Menahan Street Band crew, Josh Freese, Wolf Van Halen and more lend their magic touch. And then of course, London & NY’s symphonic finest!
Keeping the link between the score and the amazing soundtrack tunes was very important. Sometimes a piece of score we wrote would evolve into a song, in the case of “Pink”. Or with “I’m Just Ken”, a song we wrote morphed into score and back into song again. And with “Meeting Ruth” – one of my favourite moments, we were inspired to reimagine Billie & Finneas’ gorgeous “What Was I Made For?” as a wistful 1930’s orchestral ballad accompanied by Molly Lewis’ virtuosic whistling. When I think of all the music between the score and the songs, in some ways, Barbie is damn near a musical because Greta’s vision makes you feel like you’re going to burst open or walk on air, like all the greatest musicals do. I can’t believe we got to so deep into our feelings on a film as magical as Barbie. If this music helps you relive the giant pink beating heart of the film just a tiny bit, we’ve done our job. Love Mark"

Luke Jackson joins Fremantle in three-team deal; Brodie Grundy move questioned by Collingwood legend; Jason-Horne Francis, Josh Dunkley latest
Luke Jackson joins Fremantle in three-team deal; Brodie Grundy move questioned by Collingwood legend; Jason-Horne Francis, Josh Dunkley latest
Collingwood premiership player Mick McGuane is one of many scratching his head at the reported Brodie Grundy trade. Despite being contracted through the 2027 season, Collingwood appears adamant on moving the two-time All-Australian big man. Collingwood’s rationale appears to be a bid to clear salary cap space, with list boss Graham Wright not keen on having $1 milllion per year tied to Grundy…

3. Andrew 'Andy' Brayshaw (Fremantle Football Club, my team 💜) my young son, amazing footballer. future team captain. cutie.

5. Jamie Elliott (Collingwood Football Club) "Sweet Cheeks" this mans ass! oh my god! he has a fine, fine ass 🍑
6. Isaac Heeney (Sydney Swans Football Club) The boy next door. I can not think of one person who could hate this man. He's the sweetest and has that boy next door look. Cutie! and those abs.
7. Jack Steele (Saint Kilda Football Club) Not a huge fan of the club he plays for but he's hot and great footballer 😉
8. Josh Dunkley (Western Bulldogs Football Club) I've only noticed him this year so I haven't seen him live yet but i like 😜
9. Patrick Lipinski (Western Bulldogs Football Club) Now I've only seen him once at the end of a match on TV but that 2 second clip got me hooked. Sadly he won't be playing for the Bulldogs next year, come to Freo please, but he's cute af so i'll took out for him next year.

JLT Wrap
So the practice matches for 2019 have been run and won(not by us). I for one had had many questions I hoped to see answered in the JLT Cup. So, were they answered? Well, no. What we saw was more of the same from the dogs. Good around the footy, but unable to put it on the scoreboard.
The skills were pretty rusty it has to be said, particularly in the sweaty conditions up north. One thing that caught my eye was the number of underground handballs. Ok, it’s the JLT, the jury is out on just how seriously the boys were taking these games, but I don’t want to see this in season.
For one, we play with an oval ball, it’s not a basketball, the margin for error is small, if the ball hits the ground an inch to the left or right of where you intended... turonver. Opponent sticks out his leg... turnover. We are the Bulldogs not the globetotters.
Everyone can see the big question mark over the dogs in 2019 is the forward line. The talk out of the kennel in the lead up to the JLT was that Tim English was ripping up the track and clunking contested marks. So far this has failed to materialise. English played well in the ruck but certainly didn’t set the world alight with his forward presence and marking.
In the second game, against the Saints, we saw Aaron Naughton playing up forward to great effect. This kid is a star but I wouldn’t be making him a permanent forward yet. He is in the second year of his AFL career, I think we need to let him make one position his own and this position is down back. To be honest I don’t think we can afford to take him out of our back six. Losing Adams hurt us here. While Morris is a champion (and he keeps proving it even with his age rapidly approaching the number on his back) we cannot go in to the season relying on him to be the key back. If Naughton is forward, it means Cordy comes in to the defence with Wood and Morris as the chief stoppers. I just can’t trust Cordy to take care of a good opponent week in week out. I also can’t trust his ball use coming out of D50.
So Naughton is down back, Boyd is out, Roughhead and Redpath are gone and Gowers, while probably my favourite player for the way he goes about it, is not a tall, marking forward. All this means this is a HUGE season for the Shack. I believe in Josh Schache. His back end of last year showed signs of him becoming the key forward we all think he can be. The succes of this season may well hinge on if he can take the next step. I would love to have seen him explode in the JLT and kick a bag. Unfortunately that didn’t hapen, but that’s not to say that it won’t. I think the 6-6-6 can be good for Scache. He looks at his best when he is leading straight at the ball carrier at full steam. The extra space for both forwards and mids provided by the 6-6-6 means we can see this more often than in past years.
If Scache can take a big step up. He then demands the attention of the best defender, and the interceptor. Thus, opening up options for Gowers, Lloyd, the resting ruck and possibly players like Cavarra, Dickson, Greene and Lipinski. Also a guy called Bontempelli, with Libba back in the middle I think the Bont needs to spend more time forward. He is tall enough and a good enough mark to be a target, and his class and finishing around goal is elite. I think i a midfield of Liberatore, Macrae, McLean and the likes of Dunkley, Wallis, Richards, and possibly Smith, West and Hayes rotating through there can improve on previuos years and cover him. I’m thinkng more of a 50/50 split of mid/forward minutes for the Bont this year.
Lastly a note on the players we didn’t see in JLT. Fergus Greene, Tory Dickson, Rhylee West, Brad Lynch and Ben Cavarra didn’t get a run in the main games. I would have liked to see these guys get a chance to make a claim for round one.
So the JLT probably gave me more questions than answers. I would say I am probably a little less optimsitic about the season ahead than at the end of last season, and in February. However, just how seriously the team and the coach were taking it is unknown. Perhaps the boys will explode out of the blocks at Marvel against the Swans, and maybe Bevo has a few tricks up his sleeve.
Bring on the real stuff I say.
Woof Woof
