La Chimera (15): One of the Most Impractical Outfits For a Grave Robber!
#onemannsmovies #filmreview of "La Chimera". An alternative Indiana Jones arthouse adventure! 3.5/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “La Chimera” (2024). Alice Rohrwacher’s new film, “La Chimera”, is definitely an “arthouse” picture. You know that from the moment that the, slightly ragged, 4:3 framing appears on screen. The movie will no doubt bewitch some viewers and infuriate others and I have to admit that I experienced elements of both in my viewing. But it is a film with some memorable…

"La Chimera" (idem) - cinema.
Filme italiano muito bem falado nas críticas. Tinha lido, mas esquecido disso, a brasileira Carol Duarte está no elenco. Sabia e lembrava, que o ator principal era Josh O'Connor que até dois filmes trás era desconhecido pra mim. No trailer me chamou atenção a presença de Isabella Rossellini.
depois de ver: me lembrou muito filmes italianos dos anos 1970. personagens marginais, simpáticos e trágicos. bom filme.

(Some) Comics I read this Week:
Tumblr media
Miles Morales: Spider-Man #1
(Cody Ziglar, Federico Vicentini, Bryan Valenza, Cory Petit)
This issue does a great job of picking up the plot threads from the previous run it needs and quickly moving on from the ones it doesn't. I love the tension bubbling up in Miles life (well I love it as a reader but feel sorry for Miles. He's really going through it), and how it connects to his problems with anger in the previous run. Miles' life is one disaster away from falling apart, and it leaves you in suspense because you know it's going to come eventually. 9/10

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #1 (of 5)
(Jordan Ifueko, Alba Glez, José Marzan Jr, KJ Díaz, Travis Lanham)
This book continues what the animated show has seemingly started (judging soley by the trailer), making Lunella nicer and more approachable. Which imo, misses what makes her character work so well. Lunella is an outsider who makes no effort to change herself to be more likable, instead embracing her independence. And she finds a friend anyway, Devil Dinosaur, by being herself. While I'm fine with her having friends (she had friends in the original series), she seems to let them into her space too easily compared to how Lunella used to treat other people in her books. I also don't believe she'd stop being a superhero so easily.
And where was Devil Dinosaur? He's half of the title but he was barely in this story. He brings something to the table that's clearly missing here, softening Lunella while also causing her problems that further her "other" ness. Now she's just soft already, and her problems come from something else. Still, it was fun and the new villain seems interesting. 7/10

Blue Beetle: Graduation Day #1
(Josh Trujillo, Adrian Gutierrez, Wil Quintana, Lucas Gattoni)
Jaime is back! And I'm having a great time. The art is so goofy (in a good way) but is incredibly kinetic, allowing for cool action sequences and expressive faces. The set up of the Reach returning and possibly taking control of Jaime is intriguing. You can feel the pressure being put on him by the authority figures in his life, as his normal and superhero responsibilities pull him apart. I'm interested to see more. 8/10
Tumblr media
Little Monsters #8
(Jeff Lemire, Dustin Nguyen, Steve Wands, Greg Lockhard)
I've stuck by Little Monsters for awhile, half because I've enjoyed it, and half because I want to understand what's going on and see the conflict between the kids boil over. The story moves far too slowly for a monthly book, especially with the hiatus. It feels like we've been watching the vampire kids hide this human girl for months, and while that's true, it shouldn't feel that way. I also don't have a good handle on most of the characters, and what little I did know I'm forgetting. Yui, Romie, and the twins are the only ones I remembered going in.
Despite that, it still is an intriguing book. I liked getting some insight into how the kids were recruited through flashbacks, and that the "elders" might have lied. But it's telling that I don't remember the name of the girl who the flashbacks were about, since the revelations about her character (that she was a poor orphan child) don't add to anything that happens in the issue (she's barely in it).
I'm getting tired of the book, which is unfortunate because I love the art and I was so excited for it in the beginning. 6/10
