"La Chimera" Review

Today at the Roxie I saw "La Chimera" directed by Alice Rohrwacher. It starred Josh O'Connor as Arthur, Carol Duarte as Italia, Vincenzo Nemolato as Pirro, Isabella Rossellini as Flora and numerous others. Basically the story is about Arthur and a number of Italians that go hunting for burial sites of the ancient dead, like Etruscans, find them, dig them up, pull out any bowls, statuary, artifacts that were left in the grave with the dead and sell them. All quite illlegal. Arthur uses a dowsing rod to locate possible spots. He also goes into a trance and falls down if he has definitely found one. He seems to be compelled to do this. The Italians are simply in it for the money. At the beginning of the film he has just gotten out of prison for doing this. He returns to his housing, much akin to a shack, but visits the mother of his former love, Benjamina, and her family. (spoiler> Although her mother keeps saying she is simply away it turns out that she is dead. <spoiler). Anyway, Arthur has visions of her through the film. According to wikipedia, "Paola Casella of MYmovies.it has defined the film as "completely free" as the director, who through the choices of the film-cinesal format is "as the only imperative the total adherence to history and characters", finding references from silent cinema, as well as Pier Paolo Pasolini and Federico Fellini. Alessandro De Simone of Ciak also reports that it is visible “an openly Pasolinian structure” in which he inserts “a calculated narrative anarchy and in the staging”, finding it in the complex “very simplistic, chaos is ordered, fascinating and magical”, although “it could have been more”.[31] Andrea Chimento de Il Sole 24 Ore described the project as Rohrwacher’s “the most ambitious and profound operation”, which although “in the central part turns too empty”, is “an intriguing and enigmatic film, endowed with a symbolic atmosphere that makes it a feature film worthy of being thought and digested”.[32]" This style was very interesting. I enjoyed the film and thought it was very good.

Absolutely loved this one-- reminded me of *several* recurring dreams I have (there's one about sneaking around someone's house that I just had the other night). Also features an actor I just adored in 'Martin Eden'-- Vincenzo Nemolato. He's got a terrific face.
