Kris

Starting with the easiest one of them. Me and Ju didn't even argue on this one.

Doce is like THE girl band in Portugal. Is Kris into girl bands? Probably not, but the vibes are Kris. Slay girl and all. (+ it's an ESC song, Kris would be into it).

Also, lyrics-wise... it mentions the time a lot? He likes to have his day organized so it makes sense haha

Ju showed me this song and I read the first lyrics and I was like "Yes. Jan".

First of all, the genre. Classic rock? Just makes sense for someone like Jan. Can you imagine him smoking out of window to this song? I surely can!

Lyrics: I don't know about you, but personally, I feel like the Damon shoot has a lot of mystery to it, and so does Jan. I feel like there are a lot of secrets he keeps away from the public (and that's fair, he doesn't own his private life to us). So... it just makes sense.

Nace

This song doesn't have a lot of lyrics, but it's a Portuguese classic.

Honestly, it's the 80's vibes. Pretty sure Nace has talked about how he likes 80's Japanese pop. Maybe he should try Portuguese 80's then.

Jure

Again, classic rock.

Xutos is like THE portuguese band.

Homem do Leme was the song chosen for Jure because it's all about boats and the sea and that reminds me of Barve Oceana, which reminds me of Jure hehe

Just vibes. He too would smoke to this song. I know it.

Bojan

Can't believe we managed to keep it in the 80's and 90's.

At first, I thought to give Bojan "Os peitos da cabritinha" (THE portuguese song).

Because I thought: he will like classics like Xutos but also Pimba singers like Rosinha and her songs with double meaning (I can proudly say I heard her live after Luciana Abreu hehe) . Quim Barreiros is that sweet middle spot.

But the more me and Ju talked, the more we realized Bojan could listen to literally anything from Portuguese music (even D'Zert).

So, Ju suggested this song. José Cid is a bit controversial IMO, but he is an amazing singer. And a song with multiple languages just makes sense for mister Yugoslavia.

O Quarteto 1111, levado pela voz de José Cid, não fugiu à polémica, e isso fez com que se posicionasse do lado certo da história. O lado certo é sempre o lado da humanidade. Em ano de 50 anos do 25 de Abril, é um disco para ouvir, para que se entenda que além das narrativas políticas, estes temas eram presentes na sociedade portuguesa jovem nos anos 70, com preocupações humanistas e de igualdade. É um disco de protesto.

Foi em março de 1970 que o primeiro disco dos Quarteto 1111 viu a luz do dia. Seria sol de pouca dura, já que o álbum foi retirado do mercado pela censura. Aqui vamos espreitar brevemente, canção por canção, este lendário trabalho. As canções denunciavam o racismo, a imigração causada pela pobreza e continham ideias humanistas e de igualdade, tudo coisas que o regime da altura não via com bons…

There have been several songs in Eurovision history setting Portugal in a global context, not always the most well-thought through way either. Se Eu Te Pudesse is very similar to Lúcia Moniz's 1996 song O Meu Coração Não Tem Cor which was celebrating Portuguese song and dance around the world. Even the instrumentation and rhythm is similar, rooted solidly in Portuguese tradition.

Another call-back to Portugal's Eurovision history is José Cid sitting on the stool slightly to the front strumming on the cavaquinho. José was Portugal's representative in the 1980 Eurovision final, coming in 7th in a competitive year. Until research this year, I'd always thought that Alma Lusa was the name of the singer (drawn as I am to Alma's), but no. The ensemble is Alma Lusa or Portuguese Soul. José is leader and song-writer.

The singer is Inês Santos. She's the focal point here, for as delightful as the backing is, her voice (and red dress) is the thing that draws the attention over and above all of the traditional instrumentation arrayed behind her. She gives that strong call to all those viewers who share that Portuguese soul. The group were put together for this song on this stage. Afterwards, they went their separate ways.

This won Festival da Canção 1998, scoring maximum points from every juror. Yes, the Festival da Canção 1998 is still 100% jury in 1998 despite the televoting pressure. Those juror's still want tradition so they go for it. In Birmingham, it finished 12th. Halfway. As much as I love this song, it's nothing new for Portugal. Maybe time for RTP to start asking the Portuguese people what they'd like to send?

Elmano de Freitas says Workers' Party prepares to 'intense dispute' for Fortaleza City Hall

Ceará's governor analyzes the electoral race for the state's capital city

For this year’s mayoral election in Fortaleza, Ceará’s capital city, the local Workers’ Party (known in Portuguese as PT) chose state deputy Evandro Leitão as its pre-candidate. The PT member is now another character in the complex machinery of the Fortaleza election, which will also include the candidacy of the current mayor, José Sarto (Democratic Labor Party, or PDT, in Portuguese), who will seek re-election, and the definition of the candidate to be supported by Bolsonaro.

In an interview with Brasil de Fato, Elmano de Freitas (Workers’ Party), governor of Ceará, spoke about the political scenario in Fortaleza and showed himself optimistic about Leitão's candidacy, which he will support.

“The election in Fortaleza will probably be a very intense one... We're very confident that Evandro's candidacy will grow... We have been very humble in listening to the population, and we are going to listen to the population in plenary sessions. Evandro Leitão, who is a deputy in his third term, is a new name for voters, but he will have significant popular support,” said Freitas.

In Fortaleza, six Workers’ Party members have put themselves forward to represent the party in the municipal election. Among them is the former mayor of Fortaleza, Luizianne Lins, who governed Ceará’s capital city between 2005 and 2012. During internal discussions of her party, she was ruled out for Evandro Leitão, a political ally of Senator Cid Gomes (Brazilian Socialist Party, or PSB, in Portuguese), who broke ties with his brother, Ciro Gomes, and may formally support the Workers’ Party candidate in the coming weeks.
