i love hearing what lines from film/tv people quote with their family all the time because they’re always niche and forgettable to everyone but that specific family

"The Ruiz-Sarmiento Trilogy"
September 8th: The link above leads to Portuguese-language information about screenings that will take place on September 9th and 10th in São Paulo, at the theater CineSesc, of three feature-length films co-directed by the Chilean filmmaking team of Raúl Ruiz and Valeria Sarmiento.
The collaborations are phantasmagoric in nature, as Ruiz passed away in 2011 and Sarmiento (in collaboration with the Chilean production company POETASTROS) began her search for the remaining materials of his then-incomplete works in 2016. Each one of the three films thus represents two different historical moments, and all together, they present a brief recent history of Chile itself. In the “Ruiz-Sarmiento Trilogy”, the years preceding the 1970 election of socialist president Salvador Allende are represented by what once would have been Ruiz’s first feature, THE TANGO OF THE WIDOWER And Its Distorting Mirror (1967/2020); the end of Allende’s presidency and the ensuing control over the country by Augusto Pinochet’s military dictatorship are represented with Ruiz’s last film shot in Chile pre-coup, Socialist Realism (1973/2023); and Chile’s return to democratic leadership is represented with the first feature-length project that Ruiz filmed in his native land post-coup, The Wandering Soap Opera (1990/2017).
The series (which was co-curated and organized by me and Mariana Shellard) gives a brief sampling of the work of Ruiz, a comically prolific great artist whose path led him to work in many countries and languages. It also presents Brazilian audiences with the work of Sarmiento, who is known principally for having edited roughly two-thirds of Ruiz’s films, but who also possesses a long and distinguished trajectory as a director of films that represent female persistence – the screening of THE TANGO OF THE WIDOWER And Its Distorting Mirror will in fact be preceded by the first short film that Sarmiento shot, A Dream as in Colors (1973), an impressionistic documentary that privileges us with the dreams shared by female strippers in Chile in the face of daily hardships. The Chilean composer Jorge Arriagada additionally merits mention for having crafted the scores of all three features, in addition to many previous films directed by Ruiz or Sarmiento individually.
The screening of Socialist Realism at CineSesc will be followed by a public conversation with Ignacio Del Valle Dávila, a Brazil-based Chilean scholar of Latin American film, and Débora Butruce, a prominent Brazilian film preservationist. The screening of The Wandering Soap Opera will include an introduction by the Brazilian film critic Filipe Furtado, who has written extensively about Ruiz’s work.
What follows September 10th is, of course, September 11th, the day on which the Chilean coup d’état took place in 1973 and the face of democracy in Latin America was irrevocably changed. In commemoration, CineSesc’s team is providing free admission for all three of the series's screenings.
