There could be some aesthetic and acting decisions that could help with a fem!EC casting, if they want to make sure the audience understands this is mother and son:
• Wrinkly makeup
• Always hyping & pointing to CS being like “that’s my baby he can do no wrong 🥹” while he’s creating gunpowder from bones
• Be smothering/coddling, which could communicated through body language
• Maybe lean into references like Mother Gothel
• Or that one passive aggressive helicopter soccer mom
• Gaslight gatekeep girlboss basically
Hard agree on the wrinkly makeup, but I just can't see past how badly I want the Counselor to be a strictly male character no matter who plays him. Ka is so huge and operatic, it would be so cool if the story and acting adequately served the roles to the point that there is no denying who this guy is, regardless of the artist.
I think what makes CS's relationship with his parent - father or mother - is the inherent tension between what both of them want. Even in the most political read, we always see CS as some degree of heartbroken during Love Dance. The fact is there is no way CS gets 100% of what he wants if his parent gets 100% of what they want: if the coup is a success, CAD will never love CS. Straight up. So for this reason I just can't see the Counselor as coddling or smothering or protective. That would logically lead to a Counselor that cares about their son's feelings, and I think they mostly don't. Maybe the two of them have fun being comically evil or whatever, but at the end of the day CS is just one route to the Counselor getting what they want. And when it fails, CS is also the backup in the form of his invention. The Counselor sees their son as a tool, and maybe in that respect there could be some Mother Gothel parallels, but I don't think there are many signs of much parental love to be found until the very end, at which point CS bears all the consequences for their shared crimes and failures.

Would an ANIMATED biopic of the beatles be more interesting/preferable?
it’d definitely be interesting to see and something different. but my preferred biopic is having no biopic at all lol. there’s so much history, important moments, etc in an artist’s/band’s career to cover in less than 2 hours or so. it never works. not to mention, they either leave out controversial moments or they include them but glorify them in some way. making a movie about real people is so tricky and difficult because they aren't fictional people. you cant make up emotional, heartfelt, or fun scenes just to entertain people because like...you're using a real person’s name and life story. maybe im just a stickler, but most of the biopics out there clearly dont care about the band/artist’s history and just want a cash grab.
but yes, if we HAVE to have a beatles biopic i think an animated version would be cool. i’ve always thought that if we had to have a beatles biopic it should be a tv show. taking material from reliable sources and leaving everything in, even the bad stuff. each season can revolve around one album at a time and what went on in the beatles lives (all four of them. not just mclennon) during that year in particular. like the first season could be a pre-hamburg season that shows us geroge and paul’s friendship, the beginning of john and paul’s friendship, home life for everyone, and the quarrymen. i've always thought the best things about band biopics is seeing the chemistry shown between the members. bands are a team and work together, but are also (usually) very close friends. it’s important to show each members bond and relationship to each other. so yeah, that’s my pitch. it could make things easier to follow, less messy, and possibly more enjoyable.

Ok no rankings or listings this time. In your opinion, the BEST CDS costume that EVER existed?
Oh boy. I want so badly to cheat with a "what I have/haven't seen live" approach just because that really can make a huge difference. And there's also the matter of "what's the best costume" and "what's the best character design," because the two inform one another so much! But I'll follow the rules 😭
I choose Nouit.
Tumblr media
The wings. The lights. The way she shimmers when she moves. The wig looking like it's being swept by some cosmic wind. She's a character and she's part of the stage, and though I wish I could choose a costume that highlights both character and acrobatic movement, I think this is just as true to Cirque's effort to really bring out the purpose and spirit of a character through costume. She's beautiful, and I'm sure if I ever had the chance to see her in person I would have been awestruck.
What are other people's faves? I'd love to hear them! If you send them in an ask I can do a little picspam to illustrate.

What is the CdS fandom’s general disposition on each Cirque show? Cause I’m hearing and seeing different things. Like for example, you said that the Cirque fandom hated Kooza at first, but everyone in it can’t seem to get enough of it nowadays (& the Trickster lol)
I’ve started and deleted this answer several times now because every time it started it became a long, slogging fandom history that ultimately communicated little more than “Kat has cared far too much about this for far too long.” Even this version is way too long, but apparently I can’t state it any more succinctly, so here goes:
Generally the classics are anything created by Franco Dragone. Whether you particularly like the style or not, they’re basically essential viewing. To this day the Dragone Era and “golden era” of Cirque are synonymous, partly because the shows really are fantastic and partly because the nature of Cirque fandom is very, very stubborn.
Dralion was the first break break from that specific take on cirque nouveau and was not very kindly regarded as a result. Later on the arena tour was such a disappointing conversion that generally Dralion is few people’s favorite.
Once the stylistic ice had been broken with Dralion though, Varekai and Corteo came along. They were and are held in very high esteem, and rightfully so.
Kooza was further, more dramatic, and forcible crank in terms of a change of style. Old Cirque fans hated it. Like, hated. Hated to the point that they started pining for Dralion, which they’d been criticizing up until like ten minutes before Kooza’s premiere. Kooza did have a rough premiere and nearly two years of refinement, but since then it’s grown immensely popular and is now considered a flagship show. Artists are extremely proud to work on it.
Ovo and Totem are generally regarded as fun but weird and pretty forgettable. rip.
Arena tours popped up and gave Dragone fans a second hit of the good shit. But, old fans being Like That, they were still pissed and loved to bitch about how the arena versions were a shell of their former selves. Alegria’s conversion was considered pretty good, Quidam’s was pretty good but “not intimate enough,” Varekai’s was considered disappointing (I don’t agree), and Dralion fell back out of favor for being abjectly bad (which I actually do agree with :// sorry Dralion, it’s not your fault).
Amaluna isn’t looked upon too favorably for mostly sexist reasons. Many will disagree, but I saw enough bullshit discourse in fandom at its premiere to find its lack of popularity and heavily female cast inexorably linked. It was a weaker show than many, but imo it doesn’t deserve quite the level of dismissal it received.
People love Kurios and Luzia. Alegria IANL is a real, tangible, and distinct step back in the direction of magic but not enough people got a chance to see it for that opinion to take firm hold in fandom. Many people remain skeptical that it can be as good as the original.
Arena-only shows (Toruk, Crystal, Axel, Messi10) are generally not well-regarded or taken very seriously. Luckily most of the elitism has bled out of fandom by now and people will just ignore them rather than openly reviling the shows and any who dare to enjoy them.
And over in resident show world, Mystere, O, and La Nouba are venerated classics. Zumanity was polarizing and now dearly missed. Ka and LOVE are generally considered either “pretty cool” or “the fucking greatest ever” depending on the fan. Zed is the long lost favorite son. Zarkana was kind of a shit show. I don’t know anyone on earth that cares about MJ One unless they’re an Uber driver in Las Vegas, whom I assume have been collectively incentivized to plug it during rides. Zaia, Iris, Viva Elvis, and Wintuk have all but disappeared from the fandom consciousness, fairly or not. Everyone is trying to willfully forget Paramour’s existence. Banana Shpeel, Believe, and RUN are fandom embarrassments that people loooove mocking as though it’s still fun or interesting to hate on them.
That ended a little bitterly. And this is somehow still a long, slogging fandom history. But that’s pretty much it! Obviously these are broad generalizations of a big group’s collective opinion, so if anyone disagrees with the above assessments, you’re probably 10x more fun than anyone who popularized the more negative takes listed above. Almost every show has someone somewhere who would fall over themselves to explain why they’re the best show that’s ever been made. And that’s a very good thing.

STRONG CHOICE. There are so many good ones I can hardly pick. There's Guy Laliberte Self-Insert OC, Sexy Bug, Confused Everyman Destined For More, Alain Labrie...
But I think my favorite is Ornery Old Dude With Unusual Posture:

Favorite character from each show? (I was gonna also ask least favorite from each show too, but just it case it’s too controversial, you don’t have to answer this half)
Oh please, I love being critical, let’s rock it. This time featuring only shows with characters I actually feel strongly or have polarizing opinions about (which, surprise, is still a lot):
Saltimbanco - The Baron/Eddie. I watched Salti in its entirety way way too late in my Cirque relationship to be acceptable and was still utterly steamrolled by the Baron. Eddie, on the other hand, is repellant to me. I wish I saw what other people did in him. He’s just too zany for too long for my taste.
Alegria - The White Singer/I guess Tamir? I love the Black Singer, I love Fleur, but nothing makes my heart soar like the true icon herself. I don’t dislike any characters in Alegria, but of the bunch that are named, I feel like Tamir is the most expendable. That feels so callous to admit though!
Quidam - Boum Boum/Father. Boum Boum’s entire existence is a master class in stage presence. He carries a story on his shoulders and I love that you have NO idea what it is while still being absolutely certain that it’s important. The Father is the least sympathetic character of the bunch. He’s not totally unsympathetic, but come on dude, your wife is suicidal and you prob don’t know any of your daughter’s friends’ names. Get it together.
Varekai - The Huntress/The Guide. It’s hard not to say La Promise but like. The Huntress. Look at that bitch. I adore her. Absolute queen. The Guide I feel like was stronger in the show’s earlier years but by the time I saw it he was almost purely comic and onstage for waaaay too long. That’s a recurring theme for characters I don’t care for: funny + overstaying their welcome.
Corteo - fucking DRUMMER CLOWN/Mr. Loyal ig. I dunno what it is about this dude but I truly lose my mind whenever the drummer clown is onstage. I don’t want to see the show from whatever side of the stage he’s not on. I need eyes on this dude at ALL TIMES because he’s always dialing it up to eleven. I don’t even dislike Mr. Loyal too much, I just think he’s kind of a killjoy so whatev, someone’s gotta be in last place.
Kooza - The Trickster/the dog. Both go without saying.
Amaluna - Prospera/Romeo. Prospera is a fucking ten, and it takes a lot for me to choose her over the collective Amazons, whom I love with my entire heart. I chose Romeo for least fave because he’s pretty bland, he doesn’t have much motivation of his own, and it felt like cheating to choose one of the absolutely abysmal clowns.
Kurios - Chanteuse de Rue/The Seeker. My girl is just edging out Bella Donna for the number one spot, whom I firmly believe is her girlfriend. By contrast the Seeker is a wholly pointless character and I can’t believe he’s on payroll.
Alegria IANL - The White Singer/the Aristocrats. Same story as the original - as much as I love so many, the White Singer tops them all. I know people love the Aristocrats, particularly the very developed ones that are like the new version of the original’s Old Birds, but I just don’t connect to them quite as much. Definitely not expendable though!
Mystere - Red Bird/Moha-Samedi. Red Bird’s little taiko drum. No further explanation needed. Every moment he’s onstage is a delight. Moha, on the other hand, I know is very widely loved but I don’t really get it here either! Maybe his character has changed and I just haven’t seen him in his prime. He seems like another killjoy-ish character to me and I could take him or leave him for that reason.
O - Le Vieux/the Barrel Organ Grinder. Le Vieux I would die for, but it’s pointless, because he’s immortal. I want him to take me on a date and we only have red wine and dessert and I listen to him talk about varietals and why this is an excellent vintage for hours. The Barrel Organ Grinder I do not care for because he is Not Cute and for no other reason.
La Nouba - The Titan/The Walker. I would love to see an entire show where it’s just the Titan lumbering around being pointlessly menacing. I fucking love a physical actor and this dude is all that and more. You know who would get along? The Titan and Boum Boum. They’re basically the same character and I love them both for it. The Walker, like Tamir, is pleasant and harmless but ultimately I would not notice if he wasn’t there, and I feel a little guilty about that.
Ka - The Counselor’s Son/the fucking turtle. I have written many dissertations on why the Counselor’s Son is the absolute greatest and it would be a waste of everyone’s time for me to reiterate them now. So for the sake of brevity I will say only this: plot cornerstone maximizing stage time. Also: sexy as fuck. The turtle I will not address because it is not worth the time it takes to type out how pointless it is when we could have just spent more time in the Archers’ Den instead. But by now everyone knows I kind of hate fun, so no surprise there.
Zed - Nouit/Erato I guess? Joke’s on me because they’re the same vocalist. Nouit is just one of my favorite characters, singers, and images in Cirque, and I’ll never never be over her design. Erato is last because no matter how hard I look for her, I never see her, so I can’t weigh in and I feel too enthusiastically positive about anyone else to rate them last instead. So she gets the title by virtue of being too unknown for me to reasonably defend.
Zarkana - Tarantula/The Jovians. Tarantula is, like the Huntress, one badass bitch that I love more than life itself. I don’t even wish she had more stage time because she’s utterly perfect the way she is. I wish I had the energy to ship her with Zark but I just don’t like the show quite enough to commit to it lol. By contrast, the Jovians have the worst costume designs in my memory and for that reason are rated even below the insufferable clowns, who at least look good while being aggravating.
Thanks for asking!!

What would constitute a Cirque show that is of poor quality
Wow shout out to Tumblr for definitely not notifying me about this one. Sorry for the delay!
Honestly I think the most reliable marker of a quality show is the quality of its transitions. Do you have the sense that you’re gliding from act to act rather than lurching? That’s probably a better than average show. A good Cirque show isn’t something you watch, it’s something that passes over you and just happens and you’re just lucky to be around while it does. The more unified a show feels in act and theme and mood, the better.
So a poor quality show would be.. the opposite of that. A weak theme or disjointed flow are quality-killers. Personally I consider Ovo, Toruk, and Volta to have some of those traits. Ovo is a fun time, but there’s no theme apart from “bugs.” It’s just naturally going to limit itself because of that alone. Toruk has a plot, but somehow it manages to be formulaic and lack much distinct flow. Even when it’s being predictable, it’s being jarring about it, and the cool visuals can’t make up for it. Volta has strong themes, visuals, and acts but does too much all at once. If it had let go of its strict plot and let things flow better, I think it would have made for a stronger show. Amaluna has similar trouble (though I love it dearly).

I remember past reviews where you mentioned being "eh" on Dralion, what would you do to improve it?
My Dralion "eh" vibe hinges heavily on the arena adaptation, which is the only version I've experienced in person. Dralion also had the interesting position of being widely disliked until Kooza premiered (which is when I got really into Cirque), when the fandom immediately pivoted to mourning the apparent loss of Dralion and criticizing Kooza instead.
The music is good, the act quality is strong, but in execution I do think Dralion is weaker than other shows. You don't see the same quality of transitions or interludes that you see in other shows from that era, and the acts feel inserted rather than integrated, which is kind of exactly what happened. But I do enjoy it overall, and I don't judge it by its arena version alone, which is definitely a diminished version of what it was and could have been.

How do you interpret/analyze each character from each show?
Oh we’d be here for a week if I went over each character from every show. If you have specific shows or characters in mind, that’ll be much easier for me to tackle, especially since analyzing Quidam vs. Ka vs. Kurios or anything else can be so dramatically different.
