In the Future
Based on this request: "A oneshot for Jojo with a marriage pact, like if we're both single by the time we're (age) we'll get married"
masterlist
Tumblr media
It is late by the time you finally manage to make it to the fire escape. Third floor of the Manhattan newsies’ lodging house, on the side facing the west, two windows down. Same one as always. Same boy as always waiting for you there, too.
You have enough time to flash him an apologetic smile as you slide into a seat next to him. Jojo has been many things at many different times– insufferable, quick to a temper, prone to flights of fancy– but forever your best friend. That’s why you know enough to expect forgiveness for your tardy arrival even before he opens his mouth to speak.
Jojo’s still going to give you a hard time, at least for a minute or two. That’s just what he does. That’s what the two of you do, what you have done since the moment you met in this very same lodging house and what you’ll probably keep doing until one of you gets stuck in the Refuge for good or manages to move out of this city.
He arches a brow. “Y/N, do you know what time it is?” He asks it casually enough, but you can tell from the sarcastic glint in his eyes that Jojo isn’t just posing this question for fun.
“Half past six,” you admit begrudgingly.
Jojo’s eyes widen comically. “Is that so? Crazy. I thought we agreed to meet at half past five. You know, like we do every single day.”
You groan. “Oh, lay off already. I was busy.”
Usually, you’re as carefree as could be after work lets out, just like any other newsie worth his coin. Today, however, your tone is a little strained, your face a little exhausted. You try to hide it, but you should have known that you wouldn’t have that much luck.
Jojo leans forward. “What’s wrong?”
Straight to the point, just like always. You do your best to push off the inevitable for the time being, even if you have a feeling this tactic of distraction won’t work out. “Nothing. I’m great. Say, did you see Race? I think he said he stole a fresh box of cigars, maybe we should investigate–”
Jojo cuts you off with a sharp look. “You’se hiding something. Don’t think I don’t see it. Can you cut to the chase and tell me already?”
You shrug, the picture of innocence. “Nothing is wrong. I’m just a normal person behaving normally.”
Jojo sighs exasperatedly. “Y/N.”
“Jojo,” you repeat back, just as deadpan, “okay, fine. It’s just the job, that’s all. A pair of newlyweds had the brilliant idea to use newspapers as confetti for their wedding today, seeing as it’s a cheap source of paper. I was delivering the papes to them this afternoon.”
“That doesn’t seem too bad,” Jojo says cautiously.
You nod. “Yeah, and it shouldn’t have been bad, but something about seeing everyone together at the chapel, so happy, it reminds me that I’m never going to get something like that. I’m not stupid, Jojo. I know my prospects or whatever aren’t the brightest. I don’t have a dowry, I don’t have parents who are going to pay me through a nice ceremony. It just sucked watching those people be so successful when I know that’s never going to be me.”
Jojo frowns. “I know what you mean. We doesn’t have enough money to be that carefree.”
The two of you sit in saddened silence for a while before Jojo’s eyes light up again. “Wait a minute,” he declares, “I have an idea. A really good one, in fact.”
You grin. “What kind of good idea?”
Jojo stands, starting to pace back and forth across the narrow fire escape. You tuck your legs up to your chest so you’re out of his way.
“Hear me out,” he says slowly, “what if we get married? Not now, of course. Just, you know, if nothing happens. We can get tax benefits and all that stuff Katherine keeps talking about in her articles. If we’se both on our lonesome by the time we’re older, we get married. Easy as that.”
You think you might be hallucinating. “Jojo,” you murmur faintly, “you can’t actually be serious about this. Us. Getting married.”
“Yeah,” he answers, “And? It would work out. Just as a last ditch answer, obviously. I’m not, uh, doing it for any other reason. And it wouldn’t be for a very long time. Maybe you’d be on your deathbed or something.”
You snort. “I’m not getting married if I’m minutes from death.”
Jojo shrugs. “Then we do it earlier. What do you say?”
You stare at him in vague bewilderment until it dawns on you that this isn’t the worst idea, all things considered. You can only be a newsie so long, you can’t only live in the lodging house forever. At least renting some shoddy place in ‘Hattan would be easier if you had a lawfully wedded husband and all that nonsense.
At last, you swallow back your laughter and reach out your hand in mock solemnity. “Alright, then. We’re getting married at some point in the future.”
Jojo’s grin is as bright as any you’ve ever seen, and he shakes your hand with equal gravity. “Sounds like a deal to me.”
You’re not sure what to expect in the aftermath of that particular conversation. Jojo asserted that the wedding would only happen in the distant future, but it would still definitely be happening, and that’s really more than you expected in the first place. Would he act as if nothing changed, or either better or worse, like everything had changed?
At first, it seemed as if life would be normal. You go to work, you sell your papes, you talk with Jojo late into the evening just like any other day. It takes about a week or so before you start noticing the small differences in Jojo’s usual character, changes that most certainly only began to occur after that agreement happened.
The first sign comes on a Tuesday morning. You’re in line to get your papers to start the day, idly chatting to a few of your friends, when you realize that something is off.
Albert has his arm around your shoulder, complaining about how Race nearly decked him for no reason the other day just because he tried to sell at Sheepshead. When the redhead takes a breath, you whisper something to him, careful to ensure that no one else can overhear you.
“Is it just me, or is Jojo staring at us?”
Albert takes a surreptitious glance around, then nods. “No, you’re definitely right.”
Across the square, Jojo has his arms folded across his chest. He’s glaring at you and Albert, practically radiating fury. The only problem is that you have absolutely no idea why your friend is upset.
“Neither of us did anything to upset him, right?” You ask cautiously.
Albert shakes his head. “Last I checked, yeah. Maybe someone’s framed us.”
You chuckle at that. “Makes enough sense to me.”
The two of you have reached the front of the line, and Albert disengages his arm so you can go ahead and pay for your papers. You wave goodbye to Jojo when you pass him on your way out, and, funnily enough, the other boy looks far happier the second Albert is no longer within your line of sight.
A similar thing happened two days later. This time, you’re out selling papers in the streets of Manhattan, hawking your best (often false) headlines in the hopes of turning a profit. Buttons is right by your side, your selling partner since the very beginning.
This time, Buttons is the one to notice first. He taps you on the shoulder as you come back from selling a pape. “Why is Jojo looking at me like he wishes I was dead?”
You turn around, following the boy’s line of sight around a neighboring street corner. Jojo had been lingering by a streetlight, and although he quickly ducks into a shop to avoid detection, you’ve already seen him. More specifically, you saw the cold stare he was directing towards Buttons, the exact same look he’d been giving Albert the other day.
You shrug. “I have absolutely no idea. Let me guess, you haven’t done anything to upset him?”
“Yeah,” says Buttons, “he was talking to me like nothing happened this morning. Weird.”
“Weird indeed,” you agree.
By the third instance of this different attitude, you’re starting to get annoyed. It's been a week since the first time you noticed Jojo acting oddly. You’re in the lodging house after managing to sell all of your papers. Jojo walks in while you’re laughing over the day’s exploits with a group of friends. Usually, he’d stop to talk to you, but this time he walks straight by as if he doesn’t see anyone there. He gives you a polite wave, but nothing else.
Had it happened any earlier, you probably would have just brushed it off as the result of a hard day, but this time you’re mad. Jojo is treating you weirdly and you’re sick of it. You bid a quick goodbye to your friends and walk quickly after him.
Jojo looks surprised when you follow him into an empty hallway, but you’re not letting anything come in between you and some answers.
“What is this about?” You ask pointedly.
Jojo does his best to look innocent. “What are you talking about?”
You fold your arms across your chest. “You know exactly what I’m talking about. You’ve been acting oddly for days now. Did you know that some of our friends have started asking if they did something wrong? You’re treating them like they’re monsters and they have no idea why. Neither do I, for that matter.”
Jojo flushes and looks away. “That’s not– I’m not mad at them.”
“Then why are you behaving like this?” You question him.
His gaze snaps back to you. “Because they’re getting too close to you. I mean, you saw Albert that day, he had his arm around you and everything. Maybe I just don’t like that.”
You scoff. “I’m allowed to talk to my friends, Jojo. Last time I checked, we’re not getting married for another decade or two.”
“Don’t bring up that agreement,” he says heatedly, “that was for me. A last resort if I couldn’t tell you how I felt. If all else failed, that would work. I don’t know why I bothered, though, because you clearly seem way more interested in every other boy here.”
You stare at him. “Wait, you were going to tell me how you felt?”
Jojo looks unhappy, but it’s not as if he can get out of this now. “I like you,” he says simply, “I thought you already knew, but there. I do. Problem is, you don’t feel the same way.”
“Well,” you reply slowly, “who ever said anything about that?”
Now it’s his turn to be in shock. “What?”
You lift a shoulder. “Don’t be that surprised. I mean, come on, I spend way more time with you than anyone else. Surely you noticed that.”
“I’m noticing it now,” Jojo excuses himself.
You laugh. He’s certainly got all the time in the world to think about it now. You’re happy, he’s happy, and nothing could possibly be better.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When Albert was deployed, Finch was distraught. He didn’t want his husband to leave him, let alone leave their daughter.
“It’s just ten months. Not even a year. I’ll be back before you know.” They were both trying not to cry for the sake of Lily, who was not quite old enough to understand what was happening but not young enough to be ignorant of it all.
“Papa, what’s happening?” Albert knelt down next to her, gently taking her hands.
“I have to go, lilybug. Just for a little bit. Not a long time. I’m coming back soon, ok? Be good for your daddy.” Albert scooped her up, passing her into Finch’s arms. He hugged the two of them, then leaned in for one final kiss. “I’ll see you soon, I promise. Just ten months, yeah?” he spoke quietly, pressing his forehead against his husband’s. Finch nodded, choking back his tears.
“Just ten months.”
Then Albert was leaving, and Lily was crying, and maybe Finch was crying too, but he couldn’t tell. The rest of the day was a blur. The two of them headed back home, where Race and JoJo were waiting. JoJo took a now sleeping Lily to her bed while Race got some water for Finch.
“What if he doesn’t come back? What if I never see him again? What would I tell Lily?” Finch was hyperventilating, his hands shaking as he sobbed. Slowly, Race turned Finch towards him.
“Look at me. Look at me, Finch. Albert will be okay. It’s just ten months. He’ll be fine. I promise.” Race tilted Finch’s head up, nodding with what he hoped was a comforting smile. “Albert will be back before you know it.”
Those were the words that ran through his head when a soldier showed up at his door 7 months later.
“Daddy?” Lily called out. “There’s a man at the door.” Finch ran to the front hall.
“Lilybug, what did I tell you about answering the door? You gotta-“ He froze, taking in the crisp uniform and the stoic expression of the man who wore it. “Can I help you?” The man pursed his lips. “Are you Patrick DaSilva-Cortes?” Slowly, Finch picked up Lily, trying his best to ignore the dread creeping into his bones.
“Yeah, can I help you?”
“I am Captain Sam Robinson from Company A, 2nd Battalion, 21st Ordnance, from Stuttgart, Germany. I have an important message to deliver from the Secretary of the Army. May I come in, Mr. DaSilva-Cortes?"
Finch knew exactly what was happening. He had imagined it in his head over and over, and all the ways it could go, but nothing could’ve prepared him for the shock. It felt like he was drowning, with muffled sound and no air. All he could do was nod.
The captain stepped aside, revealing a younger man dressed in a slightly different uniform.
“This is Chaplain Steve Lewis. Is there somewhere we can sit down to talk?”
Wordlessly, Finch led them the living room, clutching Lily tightly. He moved to sit on the couch before stopping to look at the captain.
“What,” Finch closed his eyes, willing himself to stay composed. “What do I do with Lily? She can’t-“ he stopped as she looked up at him, eyes wide.
At barely three, Lily Patricia DaSilva-Cortes was shaping up to be sharper than both of her fathers. She had Albert’s flaming red hair and Finch’s love for music, as well as the penchant for mischief that both men shared. And above all, he loved her with his whole heart. How could he make her leave now?
“It’s nothing, darling. I’m staying with you.” He sat down, gesturing for the two men to do so as well. Carefully, he did his best to cover Lily’s ears before nodding for them to start.
The older one cleared his throat, looking Finch straight in the eye.
"The Secretary of the Army has asked me to express his deep regret that your husband Albert died in Germany on October 19th. His truck crashed in an accident. The Secretary extends his deepest sympathy to you and your family in your tragic loss."
That was it. Those were the words that Finch had been dreading ever since he knew Albert was going to leave. Those were the words that haunted him every day and every night as he prayed he would never have to hear them. And those were the words being said to him in the house he had built with Albert, holding the daughter they had raised together. The man was saying something that Finch couldn’t quite make out, but this couldn’t be real, it couldn’t be real, it can’t be real, and-
Finch felt something. Two tiny hands reaching for his shaking ones. That brought him back to the moment.
“Daddy, what’s this man saying? What happened? What’s happening?” Lily was on the verge of tears, her childish mind trying to find reason in the unreasonable.
“Nothing’s happened, dear. Nothing’s happened.” Finch wanted to just close his eyes and wake up from this nightmare, but he couldn’t. Not when the nightmare was simply reality.
“Why are you crying then?” She was too smart for her own good, really. He didn’t know what to say. How could he tell her?
“Sir, is there someone I can call?” The man was talking to him again. At least this was a question he could answer. Finch nodded, reaching for his phone. His contacts. Albert’s name stood there at the top, but he ignored it. Anthony Higgins. Call. There must’ve been some mercy left in the universe, as he picked up quickly.
“Yeah, Finch?”
Oh god. Race was Albert’s closest friend.
“Hello?”
What could he say? What could he possibly say in this moment?
“Are you there?”
Finally, Finch found his voice.
“I need you. At the house. JoJo too. It’s an-“ His voice caught on the last word. “It’s an emergency.”
Race must have sensed the tone of his voice, because he could immediately hear action on the other side of the phone.
“Shit, yeah. Are you okay? Is Lily okay?”
Finch nodded for a bit, until he remembered Race couldn’t see him.
“Yeah. Yeah. But, um,” Breaths. Deep breaths. He could do this. “Please hurry.” Finch could here Race calling for JoJo; they must have been at their place. He heard the rustle of their shoes, the click of the door, the beep of the car.
“The GPS says 10 minutes. Are you fine? Do we need to call someone?” Why was breathing so hard? Why couldn’t he breathe? It was Lily’s touch that kept him grounded, at least momentarily.
“No, no, 10 minutes is fine. You don’t need to call anyone. See you then.” He hung up quickly. He didn’t know how much longer he could’ve held on. Finch looked up at the man desperately, unsure of what to say next. Thankfully, he spoke up.
“We can stay with you until they arrive.” Finch nodded gratefully, running one hand through his daughter’s hair. He held her close, praying to whatever god was left that Race and JoJo would show up soon.
When they knocked on the door, the other man stood up to get it. He led Race and JoJo to where Finch and Lily were sitting. Finch could see them putting the pieces together and the shock of realization that flashed across their faces. They both turned towards the captain, gripping each other’s hands tightly. Race spoke first.
“Is Albert-“ He shook his head, unable to say those horrible words. JoJo stepped forward, holding onto Race like he was a lifeline.
“What happened?” The man turned towards Finch, seemingly asking for permission. Finch nodded, unable to see how he could tell them himself.
“The Secretary of the Army has asked me to express his deep regret that Albert died in Germany on October 19th. His truck crashed in an accident. The Secretary extends his deepest sympathy to you and your family in your tragic loss.”
Race’s mouth dropped open in horror as JoJo reached back to steady him. Carefully, he sat Race down next to Finch and took Lily out of Finch’s arms.
“Thank you…”
“Captain.”
“Well, thank you captain. Do you need anything else?” JoJo’s voice was carefully measured as he reached out to shake the man’s hand. The man turned back towards Finch, taking out a clipboard and a pen.
“Once again, you are Patrick DaSilva-Cortes?” Finch nodded numbly; he knew that this man had business he needed to do.
“This is your place of residence and your mailing address?
Another nod. Another scribble on the clipboard.
“And you phone number is xxx-xxx-xxxx?”
Finch nodded again, now desperate for the man to leave. He had put the clipboard away and taken out a paper, which he handed to Finch.
“That paper has more information, as well as the contact information for your casualty area command. A casualty assistance officer will contact you sometime in the next 24 hours to arrange another visit. Please do not make arrangements for his remains until you have been fully briefed by them.”
Casualty. Remains. All words that now described his Albert. The man stood up from his chair, taking a deep breath before addressing Finch one final time.
“Mr. DaSilva-Cortes, I must be returning to Stuttgart. Again, on behalf of the Secretary of the Army, please accept the United States Army's deepest condolences.”
Then he walked out the door, the other one trailing behind. Everything was silent. Silence. Finch hated silence. Albert always knew what to say. But Albert was gone.
Albert was gone.
“I’m just gonna, y’know.” JoJo looked calm somehow, still holding Lily. He went off to put her down.
“Finch, god, I don’t-“ Race’s mouth hung agape as he tried to find the right words, but Finch couldn’t stand it anymore.
“Albert will be okay. It’s just ten months. He will be fine. You promised me, Race! You promised he would be fine! You promised-“ Finch gasped before running into the bathroom, barely making it as he collapsed in front of the toilet. Race was on his tail, slamming against the door frame as he ran towards Finch.
“Shit shit shit shit shit. Do I need to call-Do I need to see if I can get that guy back here? Do you need like an ambulance?” Race was crying now, but his worry for Finch overtook anything else he was feeling. “I need Albert. I need Albert. I need Albert. I need-“ Finch was cut off by another round of violent heaving, gasping for air all the while. He couldn’t take it anymore. His skin felt too tight on his body, restricting his movement and not letting him breathe. He needed to tear it off, tear it off, tear IT-
Race’s hands covered his own, refusing to let him harm himself. “I’m calling someone, okay? JoJo has Lily, they’ll be fine together. This time I promise. I’m sorry I can’t-I just can’t.”
Race stepped out of the bathroom, pulling out his phone. Finch stayed there, hunched over the toilet, just crying. Eventually, he heard sirens. Voices. Hands on his body, lifting him up, placing him on something soft. Wires and cuffs and beeps and white. So much white. White sheets, white walls, white gowns, white ceilings, white floors. And pink. Pink? A flower. A lily.
“Uncle JoJo said you would like it.”
His Lily. Standing there. Scared.
“Where’s papa?”
Oh. JoJo stepped into his vision, followed closely by Race. His voice was soft, as if they were all glass that could shatter.
“We told you, honey. He’s-“ Finch could here JoJo take a deep breath, with Race saying something to him quietly.
“He’s gone, honey.”
“But when is he coming back? He said he would come back. Why won’t he come back?”
She was crying now, far too young for this tragedy. JoJo picked her up, muttering an apology as he left. Race sat down next to Finch’s bed, taking one of his hands. They stayed there for a while until a nurse came in a said that Race had to go. All the white turned to black as Finch slipped into unconsciousness.
He dreamt of Albert, sitting on the docks in Brooklyn. He dreamt of Albert, dancing in the rain. He dreamt of Albert lying in their bed, holding their daughter. Don’t go, he tried to say. Don’t leave, it’s not worth it. But Albert couldn’t hear him. More scenes of him passed by. Albert swimming, eating ice cream, watching tv, reading a book, playing with Lily at the playground. The day he asked Albert out, the day Albert proposed, the day of their wedding, the day they brought Lily home from the hospital. Their whole life together, blurred together through time. When Finch woke up, he was crying.
The funeral was hard. Hell, everything was hard. Lily was trying her best to understand, and Race and JoJo were trying their best to help them. They helped Finch tell the rest of their friends. Jack, Davey, Les, Sarah, Katherine, Crutchie, Romeo, Elmer, Buttons, Mush, Specs, Tommy, Mike, Ike, and Spot were all at the funeral. Finch tried to say something, he really did. Thankfully, Race had his back and gave the speech instead. He was glad when the whole thing was over. He just wanted to go back home.
Race and JoJo, bless them, stood by Lily and Finch for the rest of their lives. Slowly, they all learned to heal. Support groups, therapy, time. Some days were harder than others. Albert’s birthday, and their wedding anniversary. Those were days when Finch couldn’t get out of bed, days when Lily cried simply because her dad did. But time passed, no matter how slowly it did.
On Lily’s 18th birthday, there was a video. Something Finch had never thought they would have use for, but something that he had convinced Albert to make just in case. The sight of Albert’s face was enough to bring tears to their eyes, and the sound of his voice almost made Finch turn the tape off. But he didn’t.
“Hey, Lilybug. Happy 18th birthday! I hope you never have to see this, and I’m sorry if you do. I bet you’ve grown quite a lot, now! I’m sorry that I couldn’t be there today. I’m sorry I couldn’t be there every day. Hopefully, you’ve been good for Father Finch there. I wish I could see who you’ve grown up to be. I hope you know I’m proud of you, regardless of whatever has happened. I love you!”
As Albert leaned in to turn off the camera, Finch could see the tears in his eyes. He was crying now, and Lily was too. He tried to apologize, but she wouldn’t let him. As he hugged her tightly, she just whispered “Thank you.”
And 35 years later, as Finch laid in his hospital bed with his daughter by his side, all he could think about was finally seeing Albert again.
“I’ll see you soon, huh?” Finch laughed a little. “I’ll see you soon.”

So right before World Will Know, Specs comes in to tell Jack that the journal has raised their prices, right? Well in uksies, Specs enters followed by Jojo, Mike, Splasher, and Mush — the youngest newsies in the production.
And now all I can imagine is the little newsies just following Specs around like ducklings. 🐥🗞️

Please I beg of you good hcs 😭😭😭 I Need feel goods 😭😭😭
everyone in the manhattan lodging house knows there’s an open invitation to the penthouse.
it’s jack and crutchie’s place, sure, they’re the only ones who sleep up there every night - mostly because nobody else is crazy enough to - but specs has taught them all how to get up there, and jack always leaves the one window to the fire escape cracked open. every time he heads up there at night, he tosses, “‘m’in the penthouse ‘f’you need me,” over his shoulder, before he helps crutchie up the ladder - an invitation that anyone can go up there and seek him and crutchie out. that it’s not private.
the newsies take him up on it when they need it. race most frequently, because, okay, he misses his brothers and sometimes gets jealous that they’ve got their own private little place that doesn’t include him - which, yes, they only do because he’s refused every offer to join them, insisting he’d much rather sleep under a roof in a bed if there’s both going, thank you very much - but it’s the principle of it all. so, some nights he’ll clamber up the steps after his brothers and make them drag their beds together so he can clamber into the middle, and they can all spend the night like they did when they all first met. just kids tucked up together, safe in their trio, talking endlessly and learning everything about each other. there isn’t much to learn anymore, they know each other backwards and forwards, but that just means race has to come up with stupider questions to cover - like whether they’d rather fight a hundred tarantulas or a hundred rats, and if they heard the latest gossip fresh out of brooklyn, and if they wanna hear how he swindled some asshole outside the races.
the younger newsies climb up there pretty frequently too. splasher especially - he’s restless, and he likes to climb, though once he’s up there he gets in trouble with jack for clambering too close to the edges. he ends up all but pinned in jack’s arms, and only ever manages to giggle and fight for a few minutes before he’s out like a light. jojo likes to stand at the ledge and seek out the light of the churches, finding comfort in the fact that they’re there.
finch likes to sit and whistle out to the night, an endless wandering lilt of tunes and songs all blending into one another, hazy and soothing. he often can’t sleep indoors, needs the familiarity of the fresh air and the chill. albert likes to shoot finch or crutchie’s slingshot out at passers-by trying to get home in the dark, and loves that he doesn’t even have to hide because there’s no light on the edge of the roof for them to see him in. specs will sit at the edge of crutchie and jack’s beds and just talk, the types of talks that they don’t often get to have with all the kids around - honest and more serious. grown-up talks. which usually dissolve into hushed laughter and gossiping anyway, cracking jokes and sharing rumours they’d never get away with in front of the kids.
les begs davey and their parents for weeks to be allowed to have their first sleepover on the roof too. he’s enthralled by jack’s penthouse right from the first moment he sees it, where davey thinks jack is insane. davey’s never slept outside in his life, can’t imagine the appeal, but then it’s a warm evening and les is still begging and jack’s got that warm, amused look on his face, and davey finally says that, yes, okay, sure, they can go home and ask their folks and then, if they’re allowed, come back for a sleepover.
les and davey’s blankets that they bring are a lot softer and cleaner than jack’s and crutchie’s, but they’re added to the pile on the floor without hesitation. all four of them - the two pairs of brothers - all lay together in the mess, les and crutchie whispering amongst themselves, so it’s just jack and davey on the other side. and davey maybe finally understands the appeal, feeling the warm summer breeze on his face as he just looks at jack, silhouetted in the darkness but lit hazily on the one side in weak golden lamplight. he’s in just his trousers and undershirt, and his hair is untidy, and he looks as in his element as he does when he’s selling or painting. he looks peaceful.
davey forgets to sleep for a long while. he’s more interested in staring at jack. but then jack, half-stirring, makes a sound and opens his deep brown eyes just the slightest sliver, and reaches out discontentedly to where davey is sat at what he’d hoped was a respectable distance, a little too anxious to lay down. half afraid that it’d break the spell of jack like this. jack’s warm hand finds his forearm and pulls him closer none too gently, and suddenly davey finds himself lay on the confusing feeling of soft duvet on hard concrete, feeling jack’s hair tickle his cheek and smelling his skin, and jack makes another sound - a much more content one this time.
he and les have a lot more sleepovers at the lodging house after that. les is always delighted to get to spend the night chattering with crutchie until they fall asleep in a chaotic tangle.

what do you think splasher and tommy boy’s dynamic is like
ooh okay so!! specifically within canon, they have like two dynamics:
buddy (or mentor/mentee) - I imagine tommy boy had already been a newsie for a while before splasher joined, and tommy boy took him under his wing. showed him around the lodging house, helped him buy and sell papes on his first couple days, tried teaching splasher how to play poker but he didn't really get the hang of it, etc.
brotherly - pretty much everything else lol. splasher is pretty close w/jojo but considers tommy boy his best friend. splasher tells awful jokes that makes tommy boy look at him like 'why are we friends', splasher isn't too great at making up headlines and tommy boy teases him about it (like mush does to elmer in the scene before kony), they're very competitive with each other but also love pranking the others together and tommy boy gets pretty protective of splasher whenever the delanceys are around. once tommy boy was kinda down bc it hadn't been a good selling day so splasher made him a hat from one of the leftover papers and it made tommy boy's week

Elmers lip trembles. "Jjack? Are you leaving?"
"Course he leaving thats all he good at right cowboy?" Henry sneers. Tommy boy nods in agreement.
Romeo looks at jack "you you arent really leaving? You cant." He whimpers his eyes closing "my head hurts."
Buttons moves to support him. "Shhh Ro. We gotcha. Lets get back. Aint nothing here for us. Not no more."
Ahhhh sobbing 😭

All in the Words
Based on this request: "race and some of the newsies are hanging out with yn and yn is acting all tough. They keep trying to make her drop that attitude by making jokes, and race flirts with her as a joke. Yn gets all nervous and blushy so he just keeps going thinking its adorable until yn fires back and he kinda dies"

Tumblr media
Dawn comes and goes, and you are not there to see it. Normally, this would fill you with more than a small amount of fear– miss your morning schedule, and you’ll be hours behind when it comes to selling newspapers. Newsies live in the daylight hours, shouting slogans and catchy headlines as long as there are still people out on the street who can see enough to hand you coins. It does make it difficult to get up so early each morning, but it’s not like you have a ton of options otherwise.
Yet when you open your eyes this morning and see not sunrise but a well established day, you feel not a bit displeased with yourself. After all, why should you? Today, as it turns out, all newsies across the city will have a day off. The newspapers don’t like printing on holidays, so you can get off scot free for the whole set of twenty-four hours. Nothing says special like that.
For newsies, days off are a bit of a mixed bag. There is, of course, the immediate response to hearing that you won’t have to get up at dawn and spend too many hours out on the streets hawking papes. That would explain the shrieks and calls of glee from some of the younger newsies. Older ones, too. The second Jack Kelly heard about the holiday, he muttered something about having to talk to someone and hurried off in the direction of the New York Sun. You have a feeling he’s tracking down a particularly pretty journalist.
It’s great to think that you won’t have to work. However, you aren’t a newsie for the thrill of it. Not working means you don’t get paid, and that’s far less fun than one would care to imagine. That’s why you’ve been carefully saving your pennies for weeks now, just trying to make sure you’ll have enough to cover today’s costs before your job comes back the next day. It’s a life spread thin, to be sure, but it’s what you’ve got, and you don’t intend to waste it.
Still, sleeping in is pretty nice indeed. You allow yourself one last moment of leisure before dragging yourself out of bed. Most kids in the Manhattan Lodging House have partaken in the same delights– more than half of them are still sleeping peacefully in their bunks. You do your best to get ready as quietly as you can, and shut the door silently behind you.
By the time noon rolls around, the rest of your friends are up and at ‘em. Most of you are choosing to either kick back and relax in the Lodging House or go look for trouble somewhere else in the city. You heard Spot popped in once to check on a deal with Jack, but other than that, there are no threats in sight.
None to your physical health, at least. Threats to your peace and quiet still exist. You’ve barely sat down on your favorite threadbare armchair in a corner of the main room (the title being won by a good few rounds of fisticuffs, all solidly settled in your favor) before your name is being tossed around by some of the newsies nearby. You have a feeling that they’re trying to be discreet, but their whispers sound more like shouts when you’re indoors instead of yelling to be heard in the streets of Manhattan.
Four boys are causing trouble today, as it appears. Race, Jojo, Albert, and Romeo. All of the newsies are good friends– you have to be, at any rate, or you’ll lose your head with the godawful conditions of being outside all day– but these four are no exception. They’re the closest of anyone here, exceptions being Jack and Crutchie.
Today it seems they’ll be proving their camaraderie by trying to get a rise out of you. This isn’t anything special. You have a bit of a reputation for being stone cold, but can they blame you? Girls have to fight twice as hard to stay alive in this city, so what if you’re more here to keep yourself afloat than make friends? You’re nice when you have to be, but you keep your distance when you want it. Just because you’re not flirting all the time doesn’t mean you hate the rest of them.
The ‘Hattan boys know you don’t hate them, but that doesn’t stop the four newsies nearest you from trying to win you over anyway in the only method they know best:  being annoying and turning everything into a joke. Romeo tries his luck first, shooting his shot with a tip of his cap and a wink. You arch one derisive brow, which is all it takes for him to give up and head back to his friends.
Albert is next. He starts off strong with a story about a dream he’d had last night about pretty girls going out with him, but you cut him off thoughtfully with a recollection of a dream you’d had recently where all boys left you alone under pain of death. Struck out, he gestures for Jojo to take over.
Jojo’s attempts at flattery are so awful that you give up on trying to entertain yourself by watching them fail. You reach over for a paperback Katherine had left behind on her last visit to the Manhattan Lodging House. The book serves the dual purpose of letting you ignore the laughter of the boys and also hiding your face for the last of their attempts.
See, you can ignore Albert or Romeo any day. They’re just friends, just coworkers. You’ll never see them in any sort of romantic light. The problem comes with Race. Race is charming. Race is cute. Race is the only one who has ever been able to get through the strongest of your walls. It doesn’t matter if he’s just doing it as a joke, if Race flirts with you in the slightest, you will be affected by it.
Best to make sure he can’t tell, then, so you prop up the book in front of your face and pray he can’t see the slight smile that makes its way across your lips when Race tries his hand at flirting. It wasn’t even a good pickup line. Still, it worked, and that is absolutely devastating to your reputation.
The worst part is that he knows it, too. Even though you do your best to act as if you’re absolutely fine, you can tell by the triumphant tilt of his head that he knows it. Y/N’s got a weakness at last, and it’s Race. Of course it is.
The other boys don’t seem to have caught on, though, they’re just laughing raucously amongst themselves about the usual. Albert calls something out to Race about wanting to go take a tour of the shop next door, but Race doesn’t even look back, gesturing for them to go on without him without turning even once.
“You should go with them,” you say as indifferently as you can.
“Why?” Race asks, cocking his head to the side, “I’ve got a far prettier sight in front of me right now.”
You roll your eyes, but even you can feel the slight heat pricking your cheeks. “You’re insufferable.”
“Apparently not,” Race muses, “or you wouldn’t be smiling at me.”
You do your best to hide the offensive expression away, but your best attempts at staying serious just make your smile more stubborn. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Sure you don’t,” he says happily, “it’s not just because of me, is it? I bet Y/N L/N would never be susceptible to something like a boy.”
“Not even to a cute boy?” You ask, eyes wide with pretend surprise.
This, of all things, makes Race stutter over his words. You didn’t think it would be possible for Race to get nervous over someone flirting with him, but apparently you were wrong, because he’s all but shaking in his boots right now.
“That’s sweet of you,” he manages to eke out.
You grin. The tables have turned. “Funny,” you say, “I didn’t think Race Higgins would ever be susceptible to something like a girl.”
“I love it when you pay attention to me,” Race retorts, but it carries far less of the easy confidence he’d had earlier. In fact, Race looks like he can’t believe his eyes.
“I’m sure you do,” you muse, “Shame it doesn’t happen more often. If I knew you were going to react like this, maybe I would have started flirting back earlier.”
“I think you should keep doing it anyway,” Race whispers.
You laugh. “Only if you flirt back.”
“Oh, always, sweetheart, you know that,” Race says.
It’s easy to smile after that. Maybe Race has been flirting with you for a while, but maybe he’s meant what he said all along, too. It’s good that you’ll have plenty of time to figure him out, then. Yes, plenty of time indeed.

There's Nothing Holding Me Back (Modern JoJo de la Guerra X Reader)
Tumblr media
i wanna follow where she goes i think about her and she knows it
To say that you sparked JoJo’s interest was an understatement. The boy was fascinated by you and your personality. You weren’t a normal part of the large group of friends that JoJo was a part of. You did occasionally hang out with them when your friend Finch invited you but that wasn’t as often as JoJo wished it was.
i wanna let her take control
The boy that was JoJo de la Guerra had intrigued you since the first time you had tagged along with the group of friends. He seemed to be one of the good influences in the group but he also had a sense of adventure. He wasn’t one to be pushed around. You liked that.
It was your day off and you were excited to do something other than work or be stuck in your apartment where your roommate constantly had her girlfriend over. They were loud when you were trying to sleep and it wasn’t appreciated. You decided to go to a breakfast cafe to grab a bite to eat before going on a spontaneous adventure. You were sitting at a small table for two when you noticed the boy who had sparked your interest walk through the door. He noticed you when he was walking by the cafe and decided that he could go for a coffee. When you made eye contact with JoJo, you waved him over to your small table.
she pulls me in enough to keep me guessing and maybe i should stop and start confessing
“Hey Y/N,” JoJo softly smiled at you as he stood on the opposite side of the table.
“Hi JoJo. Do you wanna sit?” You smiled back at the boy as he sat in the other chair.
You two were just talking about different shinanogains that his friends had gotten into since the last time you had seen them. You would laugh at stupid things that he said his friends Race and Albert did that frustrated Spot and would cringe at awful pick up lines that he quoted from Romeo.
“Would you enjoy accompanying me on a spontaneous adventure around the city?” You asked once you had finished your breakfast and JoJo finished his coffee.
“I would love too,” JoJo smiled.
i love it when you go crazy you take all my inhibitions
Normally JoJo would have been nervous and very self conscious about hanging out one on one with a girl. He didn’t feel that way with you though. Your free spirit helped him let go. The way you ran and held his hand as you ran down the busy streets of Manhattan made him feel free. If he even started to seem tense, you reassured him that everything would be fine.
you take me places that tear on my reputation
“Have you ever been interested in robots?” You asked as you tugged JoJo closer to an alleyway.
“I mean I guess. They seem cool,” JoJo shrugged his shoulders but furrowed his eyebrows.
“Good.”
JoJo was slightly concerned when the two of you made your way down an alley but decided to trust you. You knocked on the door that the two of you were standing in front of before it opened to reveal JoJo’s friend Ike.
“Icheal my dude. Has it started yet?” You smiled at the boy.
“You’re never going to stop calling me Icheal are you?” He sighed as he let you two in.
“Never. Now has it started yet?” You smirked at Ike.
“It started when I opened the door.”
You held JoJo’s hand still and subconsciously squeezed it as you followed Ike to the crowd in the center of the room. JoJo gave you a confused look before you explained that the two of you were at an illegal bot fight.
“Like Big Hero Six?” The boy softly smiled.
“Exactly like Big Hero Six.”
manipulate my decisions
After a few rounds of bot fights, you decided that the two of you should get going. JoJo followed you after you two bid Ike goodbye. JoJo grabbed your hand once again as you walked out of the building and back into the alleyway. You asked JoJo where he wanted to go next but he just told you to decide. So you decided to give him a few options.
“We can sneak into a movie or actually buy tickets. There’s a nice restaurant up the street if you’re hungry. Or we could go bug one of your friends at work,” you suggested as you tried to think of things to do.
“I don’t know about annoying them but we could go visit someone,” JoJo shrugged.
“Where’s the fun in that?” You laughed.
“Well I guess nobodies gotten on Racer’s nerves lately but he’s been on all of ours recently.”
So that’s how you and JoJo ended up inside of the Tilly's that Race worked at after a few subway stops. You decided that you would start by making Race go around the store getting you the same shirt or something but in a different size.
"Hey JoJo. Y/N what a surprise," Race greeted the two of you.
You smiled as you let go of JoJo's hand for the first time since you left the bot fight. You walked over to a rack and grabbed a shirt that you liked. It was a top that had a slight slit on the sides that went to about the bottom of the ribcage. You decided to grab this shirt in your normal size because you liked it a lot. After grabbing a few more things to try on, you asked Race to open up a dressing room for you.
there's nothing holding me back
"I don't know JoJo, I think it's a little small," you said, poking your head out of the dressing room when he asked how it looked.
"Come on it can't be that small," he chuckled.
You were trying on the one shirt that you got in your regular size. Apparently you're a size larger than you thought and the shirt was genuinely way too small for you.
JoJo had just taken a drink out of Race's water bottle after he spoke but he spit it out when he saw you walk out of the dressing room. Race laughed at the boy before turning around and seeing the shirt on you. The slits in the shirt showed your side more than they were meant to and hugged your chest uncomfortably.
"I'm so sorry Y/N. I didn't realize it was that small," JoJo quickly tried to apologise before you shook your head.
"It's fine. But Race could you please grab me one in a different size please," you smiled apologetically at Race.
The boy nodded his head before he headed to the front of the store. You looked into the mirror on the door and tried to figure out what about your body was different to the last time you had bought clothes.
"Hey it's okay. What's wrong?" JoJo asked you as he hugged you around the shoulders from behind.
"This was actually my normal size," you muttered as you slightly tugged on the shirt.
"Y/N look at me," JoJo said as he looked into your eyes through the mirror. "It doesn't matter what size you are, okay? You're beautiful no matter what. I think your gorgeous and no size a shirt tells you you are will change that."
You slightly flushed at the compliment and bit back a smile. Thankfully Race had just returned with the new shirt and handed it to you. You smiled in appreciation before going back into the dressing room to put on the new shirt. This time when you exited the small room, you smiled genuinely and did a small twirl. JoJo smiled at you and softly shook his head. You decided you just wanted that shirt and didn't feel like annoying Race after all. Well besides giving him all the clothes you didn't feel like trying on so he had to put them all back.
"Alright bye Racer!" JoJo called out to his friend while you waved.
JoJo bought you the shirt even though you already had your money ready. The two of you decided to head back to JoJo's apartment and make something for dinner as it would be later in the afternoon when you would be getting back. You and JoJo hopped into the subway and started to head back to Manhattan.
if you were by my side and we stumbled in the dark i know we'd be alright
By the time the subway got you two into the city, it was getting dark. JoJo suggested that you two call someplace and just pick up the food so that's what you did. While you waited for the food to be ready, you went to a cafe and got something to drink.
"How'd I know you would get hot chocolate?" You giggled at JoJo and his choice of drink.
The boy shook his head smiling at you before wrapping his arm around your shoulders. The two of you made your way to the restaurant you had ordered from to pick up your food before retreating to JoJo's apartment.
Once you got to his apartment, the two of you sat and ate while watching some movie that happened to be on television at the moment.
"So tomorrow do you want to go get breakfast together?" You asked as you took a bite from your food.
"I'd love to," JoJo smiled at you.
cause if we lost our minds and we took it way too far i know we'd be alright
"You know you really are beautiful, right?" JoJo asked you after he had thrown away your guys' trash.
"You really think so?" You asked looking over at him.
"I know so," JoJo smiled as he wrapped his arm around your shoulders once again.
Neither of you were sure how it happened but one thing led to another and…
Part 2 will be out soon!

breakfast duty
Tumblr media
The sun peaked through the windows of the Newsie Lodging House so bashfully it reminded Jack of one of the younger newsies poking their little head through a door to ask him for something. But the morning was not asking for anything, it was forcibly reminding him that there was a new day here, which was less adorable. Jack rolled over and sat up in his bed in one fluid motion, having done it enough times over the years to not hit his head on Race's bunk above him. He peered around the room to see if anyone else was awake yet as he dug under his bed for clothes and his shoes. Specs was slowly beginning to stir, but JoJo, Tommy Boy, Henry, Finch, Crutchie, Mush, and Albert were all still sound asleep. Jack pulled a shirt over his shoulders and slid on a clean(ish) pair of trousers before slipping on his shoes. As he laced them up, Jack heard Race groan loudly. In doing he so, he stirred some of the still sleeping newsies, which garnered a round of 'shuddap's and "can't ya see i's sleepin's and even a few chucked pillows in response. Jack chuckled.
"You're on breakfast duty, Racer," He said, slapping the bottom of Race's bunk as he stood up. Race sat up, his hair disheveled and a blanket hanging off half of his head.
"What? Why?"
"Because Earl is still too sick to do it and Specs and I have already done it." Race groaned.
"Ain't nowhere in the lease did it say that if the landlord was sick I's got to make breakfast." He said, throwing his feet over the bunk and rummaging through the pile of clothes on top of his covers.
"That's 'cause most people don't need a legal document to remind 'em to do what's right. They's got common sense," Specs responded, tapping the side of his temple. The still half-asleep newsies laughed.
"Ay, ay guys be nice!" Albert walked over and patted Race's back as he grumpily hopped down from his bunk. "You know's Race lost in common sense in a bet on a losing horse yeeeears ago!" The newsies roared with laughter so loud it shook the window panes.
"It was a sure thing!" Race shouted in his defense as he stormed out out of the room.
Jack grinned. Despite the complaints, it was proving to be a pretty good morning. And as long as Race didn't try to get revenge by poisoning the oatmeal, there would be a tolerable breakfast too.

skeletons in the bathroom
racetrack higgins x reader
summary: it’s spooky season, and is there anything scarier than having to confront and admit your feelings for one of your closest friends? (or, in which y/n is helping race get ready for a halloween party and desperately trying not to think about how much she wants to kiss him.)
a/n: i did it!! a halloween fic out for october 2020!! sorry it’s so late in the month, life has been very hectic with an overload of assignments and plenty of politics induced stress. anyway this is unedited so sorry in advance but i hope you like it :)

__________
This had been such a bad idea. Why on earth had she agreed to this? What kind of astounding lack of brain cells had led to her saying yes to attending her own goddamn funeral?
"Albert, you would leave flowers at my grave, wouldn't you?" She turned to look at him just in time to see him roll his eyes. Jojo and Finch, sitting across from them at their table in the library, both stared at her with equally confused and amused expressions.
"Y/N if you tell me you're gonna die one more time, I'll literally kill you myself." Albert fixed her with a halfhearted glare, brushing his hair out of his face. She groaned and dropped her head down on top of her arms, resting lazily in the tabletop. Jojo laughed quietly at her, but she didn't have the heart to give him a death stare in return.
"Out of curiosity," Finch started, effectively abandoning his work, "what kind of flowers would you want?" She lifted her head, pursing her lips in concentration as she thought the question over.
"I don't know, either something really pretty or something ridiculously dramatic." Albert sighed beside her, finally putting his pencil down. Jojo had stopped actually trying to get work done a half hour prior. "Like, some pretty marigolds or daisies would be cool, ya know? But, also, a single red rose would have a very nice effect." Jojo nodded along with her.
"What about black dahlias?" He asked. Y/N perked up at that.
"Oh, yes! Definitely achieving that she-was-probably-murdered-and-the-killer-is-leaving-flowers vibe." She high fived Jojo while Finch shook his head at them. Albert hit her from her right side—lightly, but she let out a loud "ow!" anyway.
"Can you stop moping and acting like you're gonna die? You're the one who got yourself into this mess." She went back to being miserable immediately, groaning again for effect.
"Will someone please explain why she's dying?" Finch asked, directed more at the other two boys than at Y/N. Albert rolled his eyes again.
"Race asked her to do his makeup for his skeleton costume before the party tonight and she said yes, but now she thinks she's gonna die when she does it." He punctuated his words with a pointed look at her which effectively communicated all of his exasperation as well as the sentiment he had been expressing to her for almost two years, that she should just go for it and ask Race out. She ignored it completely.
"I am going to die!" She threw her hands in the air for dramatic effect, giving Finch and Jojo her best 'I'm in despair' look. "I'm gonna have to be ridiculously close to his face—and his lips—for way too long! I'm gonna either go insane and launch myself out the fucking window or die of embarrassment."
All three boys laughed at her. Insulted, she crossed her arms over her chest and pouted at them.
"Y/N, it'll be fine," Finch said, pretending to wipe tears from his eyes. "Anyway, why can't you just ask him out already and not have to deal with the funeral arrangements?" She offered him her best deadpan stare.
"C'mon, Y/N," Jojo chimed in. "What's the worst that can happen?"
"Oh no, don't get her started," Albert groaned.
"The worst that could happen? Are you kidding?" She looked at them incredulously. "Well, for starters, I could tell him I like him and then he could be disgusted because why would he ever like me back when he's him and I'm me, and then, because he was your friend first and things are super awkward between me and him, we drift apart, and then I lose all of my friends and I die alone with no one to leave black dahlias on my grave in order to entertain my dramatics." Finch blinked, staring at her with wide eyes as if he couldn't quite believe what he had just heard.
"Hold on," Jojo spoke up again, face contorted with anger. "He would not be disgusted. Even if he didn't like you back, which he does—"
"Does not," she grumbled.
"Does too," they all answered in unison.
"He wouldn't be mean about it," Jojo continued.
"And we wouldn't stop being your friends," Albert added.
"Plus, even if we suddenly become arch enemies I'm totally still leaving black dahlias on your grave for dramatics," Finch grinned, winking at her. That got her to laugh a little, smiling back at him.
"I just..." She sighed, her shoulders slumping. "I don't want to ruin anything, and I don't want everything to change between us. I'm fine being his friend, that's enough for me. It's just hard to keep my feelings in check when he gets too close to me." Her eyebrows furrowed while she fidgeted with her fingers, not liking how vulnerable she felt while telling all of them that. Albert's arm slid around her shoulders, bringing her into his side. It was awkward and uncomfortable leaning across the gap between their chairs, but she enjoyed the comfort anyway.
"You don't have to do anything you don't want to," he said gently. "You have our support either way." Jojo and Finch nodded, both smiling encouragingly at her. She smiled back at them, moving to gather up all of her papers. The boys followed suit, shoving everything back in their backpacks.
"Thank you," she said quietly just as they were all pushing their chairs in.
"Anytime," Albert grinned brightly, throwing his arm around her again and leading them out of the building. A wind blew as they walked out into the October sun, sending a chill through her body and causing her to lean into Albert's body for warmth. They all started walking in the direction of their on-campus apartments, pointing out the most colorful trees and joking about the upcoming party with easy smiles.
"Speak of the devil," Jojo muttered from behind her. She went to turn back to look at him and ask what he meant, but Albert pulled her more securely against him and she laughed.
"Hey guys!" Finch called out, waving wildly. She looked in the direction he was facing and saw Race walking in the opposite direction with Romeo across the street from them. She felt heat rush to her face automatically, lifting her hand in a small wave while sporting a shy smile. Albert and Jojo waved enthusiastically with Finch, receiving an equally energetic wave from Romeo and a small wave from Race. Y/N tilted her head in confusion, frowning. Race never missed the chance to make an ordeal out something as small as seeing his friends across the street, was something wrong? No one else seemed concerned, though, and their small group kept moving. If anything, Finch and Jojo seemed amused, snickering quietly behind her and Albert.
They parted to go to their respective apartments, all three boys giving Y/N a hug goodbye. She took full advantage of their attempts at comfort, holding them tightly and burying her head in their chests. Once she was back in her apartment, her roommates thankfully back home for the weekend, she dropped her bag on the floor and took a deep breath. Race was set to come over a little while later to get ready for the party, that left her some time to clean up a little. He wouldn't care if the apartment was dirty, but she couldn't get rid of the urge to make sure the counters were decluttered and the bathroom where she would be doing his makeup smelled nice. Plus, at least it would give her something to do to distract herself from her ever growing anxiety.
She was definitely going to die.
__________
Race was ten minutes late, but Y/N had already figured he would be when his "omw" text didn't come until a minute after he was supposed to be at her apartment. He grinned at her when she opened the door, arms (adorably) holding the straps of his backpack that she assumed was carrying his costume.
"I wasn't sure if you would want me to put on the costume before or after the makeup," he said as he walked in. "So I just brought it to change into." She liked the way he looked so comfortable in her apartment, facing her casually with his hair messy from the wind. She smiled softly at him, unable to contain her ever present joy at seeing him.
"Before, definitely. If you put it on after you might mess your face up." He nodded, already shrugging his bag off his shoulder.
"Your room okay?" He asked, gesturing in the direction of her bedroom.
"'Course. Just don't mess with anything in there." She playfully pointed a finger at his chest and he laughed as he moved into her room and closed the door behind him. She walked into the bathroom, taking deep breaths and trying to tell herself everything would be okay. Her and Race were friends, and she was perfectly capable of helping him with his Halloween makeup like a normal person. Maybe. Hopefully. Kinda. Probably not. God, she was hopeless.
He found her in the bathroom obsessively reorganizing the makeup, dressed in his full skeleton getup. She smiled when she saw him in it, happy that he hadn't picked something with a good that would have concealed his beautiful curls. With his lanky stature and gangly limbs, the costume worked perfectly for him. He grinned back at her, doing a little shimmy that made her laugh.
"You like?" He wiggled his eyebrows at her and she shook her head in a amusement.
"It looks good," she confirmed, their usual joking banter hindered by her nerves. "We should get started so we have enough time, I still need to get changed and finish my makeup, too." She patted the bathroom counter and he followed her hand, hoisting himself up so he was sitting on the counter facing her, swinging his legs.
She tried not to think too hard as she started on his face, going in with a layer of white before anything else. She could feel his breath on her wrist, but she tried not to think about it. Thinking about it meant her own breath would hitch and then, because their faces were so close, he would notice. She brought a hand up to his jaw to steady his face and resolutely did not think about how easy it would be to pull him to her and kiss him.
Part of her wanted to listen to the boys. She wanted to say fuck it and tell him how she felt about him. She wanted to flirt with him while she had him at her mercy like this, wanted to lean in and put a hand on his thigh for balance just to see how he would react. She wanted to know if his breathing would change, if his heart would skip a beat, if he would look at her with wide eyes or if he would simply smirk and carry on. Or maybe he wouldn't do anything, because it would nothing but a meaningless gesture to him. But, god, she wanted to try. And she wanted to kiss him so badly.
Still, the other part of her triumphed. The part that told her he didn't feel the same way about her, that to him she was just a good friend and if she went and did something stupid she would ruin that.
She asked him to close his eyes and he did so obediently. She took the chance to look at his lips while he wouldn't be able to notice, realizing how quiet he'd been the whole time so far. Once his face was fully covered with white he opened his eyes and she took a small break, giving herself some time to calm down her erratic heart beat. He kicked his legs out again without her standing in front of him to block them.
"So," he started, staring down at his feet instead of looking at her. She tilted her head slightly, waiting for him to continue. "You and Albert, huh?" Her eyebrows furrowed and she stopped short as she went to grab a brush, paused in confusion. "What's going on there?"
"What do you mean?" She asked, trying to laugh to diffuse whatever tension had just overtaken the room but only managing a nervous chuckle.
"You two looked pretty cozy earlier, outside. Do I gotta start preparing myself for you to be acting all gross and couple-y whenever we go out now?" His voice sounded strained, like he was trying to force the question to be casual. She figured it was because he was upset Albert and her wouldn't tell him something like—which, they totally would if that was at all a possibility. Which it wasn't. The whole idea was so ridiculous a strangled laugh bubbled out of her throat.
"Oh, god no. There is nothing romantic happening between me and Albert." She looked down at her hands, avoiding having to look at his face. "No, it was just cold, you know? And he was trying to comfort me because I was upset." Suddenly he was there, standing in front of her. He gently tilted her chin up to look at him and used his other hand to grab hers.
"Babe, what's wrong? Are you okay?"
She was going to cry. She was going to burst into tears, standing in her own bathroom with Race's touch overwhelming her senses. It wasn't fair. It wasn't fair that he was so handsome and funny and kind and loving. It wasn't fair that whenever he looked at her she felt like no one else existed. It wasn't fair that she couldn't breathe with his hand still resting just under her chin. And the universe was just playing dirty having him call her babe like it was nothing, like it didn't make her heart swell in her chest. Like it didn't absolutely break her. She was definitely gonna cry, her eyes already watery.
His concern only seemed to increase when he saw the distraught look on her face. He tried to take another step toward her but she moved backward, detaching herself from his hands. She breathed deeply, running her hands through her hair as she tried to keep herself from sobbing. He looked so worried—so sad—and it just wasn't fair.
"I'm—" Her words got caught on the lump in her throat. "It's nothing, really. I'm just being dumb." He looked at her disbelievingly.
"Y/N c'mon, you're clearly upset, let me—" He cut himself off at the way she back away from him again while he reached out, hurt flashing across his face. "Here, why don't we just skip out on the party? I'll stay here with you and we can watch old Disney Halloween movies or something." She wanted that so bad, she wanted that more than anything she had ever wanted. But she couldn't, it would only hurt her more.
"No," she sniffled, regaining her composure. "No, you should go. I might stay back, I dunno. But I don't wanna keep you from having fun."
"Hey." His voice was soft, the corners of his lips turning upwards just slightly. He was so beautiful she could have died over it. "I always have fun with you, party or not. If you don't go, I don't go."
"God, Race. You can't just—you can't say things like that." She huffed while he blanched in confusion. "It's not fair."
"What? I don't—"
"Listen, I'll finish your makeup, yeah? And then we'll go to the party and we can pretend like this never happened. Okay?" He nodded mutely, slowly positioning himself back on the counter. The concern wasn't gone from his eyes and his mouth was set in a frown, but he complied.
Not crying was a constant effort the entire time she finished his skeleton makeup. She felt her lip quiver at more than one point and Race's eyes kept darting down toward it. She did her best to keep it steady, not wanting him to see her cry. He had seen her cry before, of course, over classes and movies and the like, but there was a special kind of shame associated with him seeing her cry over him.
It wasn't until after she was done that he spoke up again. "Do you not want to be alone with me?" He asked it so quietly she was sure it must not have come from him, used to his loud, boisterous voice. Her heart broke all over again.
"That's not it, Race. You know that, right? It's not your fault I'm upset." It wasn't, really. If she was going to blame anyone it would all be on herself.
"What, then?" The joking tone was back in his voice, clearly trying to diffuse the tension and brighten the mood. "Too afraid you won't be able to control yourself around me?" Yes. "I know you'd love to jump these bones." She laughed despite herself, playfully hitting his arm. Her reaction made him smile again, and she was glad. He always knew how to cheer her up.
It only took a little while longer for her to change into her costume (just a regular witch in shades of black and purple) and put on her makeup. Race watched her as she put on her dark lipstick, making her nervous and subsequently causing her hands to shake, but she made it through alright.
They left just a bit before the party was supposed to start, Y/N shivering in the cold air as they walked. Race glanced at her a few times, seemingly conflicted, before cautiously wrapping an arm around her. She leaned into his touch and he gripped shoulder more firmly, pulling her into his side. When they stopped to let a car go by she turned to him and wrapped both her arms around him, basking in his warmth. Race was like a heater, generating warmth from the day she met him. He returned her embrace, rubbing her back soothingly.
"Are you sure you're okay?" He mumbled into her ear. A shiver went down her spine at his voice so close to her ear, but she nodded, holding him tighter. They were later to the party then they should've been, having spent a good amount of time in that embrace. It had made her heart all fluttery, not to mention the way it did somersaults every time Race looked at her for the rest of the walk (which was a lot, he must have been really worried).
She expected him to split off once they entered, going to look for some of his other friends, but he stuck by her side. It made her smile, the butterflies in her stomach going wild. They went to grab drinks together and ran into Finch.
"Hey!" He smiled dopily, clearly a little tipsy already. "The makeup looks great," he gestured at Race's face. "And you two look so cute together." Heat rushed to Y/N's face as she quickly took a sip of her drink in order to avoid having to respond. Race simply laughed.
"Yeah, Y/N did an awesome job, right? I knew she would, though. I could feel it in my bones." Y/N groaned and Finch cringed.
"That was awful, dude." Race grinned proudly anyway, waving as Finch left to go back to the friends he was with.
"Did you pick this costume just so you could make bad jokes?" Y/N turned to face Race, raising an eyebrow. He winked, which was all the answer she needed. She wanted to give some sort of sarcastic remark in return, but the wink made her giggle nervously. He seemed content with her response all the same.
About three thousand skeleton jokes later (he had literally greeted Davey by saying "bonejour." Davey had promptly turned around and left the two of them without saying a word), Y/N and Race were sat on the couch together, chatting amicably. She felt better with a bit of alcohol in her veins and a few buckets of false hope from the fact that Race hadn't tried to leave her side once the whole time they'd been there.
"You're such an idiot," she laughed uncontrollably as he relayed a story about him following a squirrel across campus the week prior.
"What can I say?" He grinned cheekily. Her smile dropped.
"Don't you dare—"
"I'm a bonehead." He knocked on his head for good measure.
"Okay that's it, I'm leaving." She moved as if to get up before Race reached out to grab her arm.
"Y/N, no!" He managed to get out through his laughter. "Don't leave me bonely!" She stared at him in disbelief.
"You're the worst," she groaned as she let him pull her back into her seat next to him.
"But you love me anyway." He poked her side and she looked at his face. The makeup looked good, she had to admit, but she wished it had been able to mask his face better. Because looking at his face was still looking at his face, makeup or no makeup, and she had a bad habit of getting caught up in looking at his face. His features seemed to tense, his Adam's apple bobbing as he swallowed harshly. "Drinks!" He said suddenly, breaking their staring contest and practically jumping out of his seat. "I'm gonna go get us more drinks." She nodded, eyebrows furrowed as she watched him scurry off. That had certainly been strange.
"Fancy seeing you here." She turned to see Albert falling into Race's spot beside her, grinning around his own drink.
"Hey," she smiled, adjusting her witch hat.
"You and lover boy work things out yet?" She punched his arm and he gaped at her.
"Shut up," she hissed. "It's not gonna happen, let it go." He rolled his eyes.
"You sure? Because, from what I've seen, he hasn't stopped staring at you all night." She glared at the redhead, pouting.
"Stop giving me hope, asshole. It just makes this worse."
"Makes what worse?" She looked up to find Race standing in front of them, two drinks in hand. She took one from him with a smile.
"Nothing," she shook her head. "Albert's just being annoying."
"Isn't he always?" Race asked with a smirk the same time that Albert said "hey!" Deciding this would be her best chance at payback for teasing her about her crush on Race, she pushed Albert off the couch. Race laughed loudly, stepping over his friend to return to his seat. She smiled brightly at him and he grinned back, bumping her shoulder with his. She had to take a drink to stop the flustered laughter from escaping her throat.
"You two suck," Albert groaned from their feet. It only made them laugh more, still giggling even as Albert stood up grumpily and walked away without saying goodbye.
"Your costume looks really good, by the way." She turned to Race, her smile faltering. "I didn't tell you earlier, but I like it." He said it so earnestly, looking right into her eyes. The only thing she could think of was hoping the boys were ready with those black dahlias, because she was a total goner.
"Thank you," she said softly, lost in his gaze. She thought about them in the bathroom, how she had wanted to put her hand on his thigh just to see how he would react. Thinking of what Albert had said and taking another gulp of her drink, she did just that. She leaned forward and put her hand on his thigh to steady herself. He froze. It was hard to tell over the noise of the party, but she thought she might have heard his breath hitch. She couldn't look away from him, her eyes once again finding his lips.
"You spent so long on this makeup," he muttered. "And it looks really cool." She tilted her head in confusion.
"Huh?"
"I really don't wanna ruin it. I'm sorry."
"Why would you—"
But then he kissed her, so no question she could have asked mattered anyway. He was kissing her. Oh, Albert was gonna laugh so hard when he heard about this.
She kissed him back fervently, one of her hands tangling in the curls at the back of his head while the other remained on his thigh to keep herself steady. One of his hands rested lightly on her waist, squeezing just slightly, while the other caressed her jaw. It felt like in the bathroom earlier that night when he had tilted her chin to look at him, but so much better.
He pulled back before she was ready, eyes still closed as she unconsciously chased his lips. She opened her eyes to see his makeup smudged and definitely some her lipstick on his lips, a warm feeling settling in her chest. But his mouth was pulled into a frown and it sobered her quickly. He was pulling at his hair, his eyes wide with panic and sorrow.
"I'm sorry," he panted. "You're upset, I shouldn't have done that. I've been trying to cheer you up and now I've, like, totally taken advantage of you when you're vulnerable and—"
"Race." He looked at her, face practically begging for forgiveness. She reached for his hands with a small smile. "You're not taking advantage of me. I was only upset because I thought I didn't have a chance with you." She shrugged slightly, averting her eyes. He gaped at her.
"You didn't have a chance with me? Are you kidding?" He tightened his grip on her hands, pulling himself closer to her. "Y/N, I've been pining after you since, like, the day we met. You're ridiculously out of my league." She looked at him with wide eyes, meeting his gaze. They both broke out into grins at the same time before she was leaning in again and he was following.
He tasted like candy and alcohol and she couldn't have asked for anything better. They slid closer to each other on the couch until her hands were clasped together behind his neck, playing with his curls, and his were holding her waist. She couldn't get enough of him. She didn't think she would ever get enough of him. They were both breathing heavily when they pulled away again, foreheads resting against each other.
"You know," Y/N breathed. "If that whole 'just the two of us spending the night at my apartment and watching old halloween movies' offer is still on the table...." He laughed quietly, his head falling to the crook in her neck.
"Definitely still on the table." He pressed a light kiss to her neck and she was dragging him into a standing position immediately, fully ready to get away from all the other partygoers. She wouldn't be able to handle it if his hands wandered any further than they had already gone, she needed time to breathe and process—preferably away from the crowd.
He held her hand and lead her through the sea of people to the front door. Jojo caught sight of them as they made their way out and, presumably seeing their joint hands and messed up makeup, whooped at them. Y/N laughed and Race stuck his tongue out at his friend.
"Which movie do you wanna watch first?" She asked as they walked back, holding onto his arm and leaning into his side.
"Oh, definitely Halloweentown." She smiled, pulling him in for another kiss. He chuckled when they pulled apart. "You know, I would say a skeleton pun right now, but I don't have the guts to ruin this moment."
"Oh my god, Race."

heya! could we get some javey/javid? anything goes/works :)
why of course! im not sure if you preferred fluff or smut so ill give both hehehe.
this is kinda hcs kinda not? idk
- so javey met because they were lab partners in basic chemistry
- davey was really good and jack was...well...really bad
- they would work on projects together where davey did A LOT of the work
- basically all of it
- but neither of them were really that bothered
- jack didnt have to work and davey liked that jack couldn’t mess it up
- plus they spent time together
- davey caught feelings first, laughing at a joke jack told and hearing the boy also laugh at his own joke
- jack caught feelings when he saw davey blush for the first time
- the rest of it was simply pining
- they’d stand next to each other and they would both be a little too close
- their hands would brush while walking next to each other and they would both pull away so fast
- jack didn’t make any moves until a full school year of pining (aug-may)
- and by moves i mean a short and fast kiss on the cheek as they left their last day of school
- davey stood like a frozen giant on the side of the school, butterflies errupting in his stomach
- jack was quickly walking to his car
- everyone was running around to leave, saying goodbye and finding their cars
- one more second and he would lose jack in the mess of people
- scratch that, he’d always find jack
- so he took big steps and went after the other
- “jack.” his voice was too quiet.
- “jack!” he felt so loud even with everyone around him.
- jack unlocked his car, oblivious to the call
- “oh jeez, jack!”
- he turned around
- “i know the cheek thing was weird we can forget it.”
- “no! i..i mean, no. it wasn’t bad. this isn’t about that- or no it is but no cause it’s bad and like i’m not upset about it. i’m more confused because you kissed my cheek and i- i don’t..don’t know what to think. well okay thats a lie again i do kinda know what to think, i think i just-”
- “jesus dave slow down.”
- davey apologized and shifted on his feet
- “i like you.”
- the words twisted together as they confessed at the same time
- jack smiled
- davey let out a laugh of relief
- “can i kiss you for real now?”
- davey nodded and took a small step forward
- jack didn’t hesitate kissing davey
- hands on his face, the tiniest bit on his toes
- they’ve been together ever since
okay so these are more headcanons? i don’t know what those were ^^^ but i liked them so— these are smut headcanons.
- jack and davey are a very versatile pairing
- they never say who the top or bottom is, and when they’re doing it things usually just fall into place
- it’s usually not hard to tell between the two, it’s usually obvious as to who wants what
- now lets say they’re 18+ OBVIOUSLY
- jack is kinda more intense than davey, but davey doesnt really mind
- jack likes more dirty talk
- daveys learning
- and he can’t lie and say it doesnt turn him on
- i’m also a firm believer that davey is the one to start things majority of the time
- they’ll be on the couch and daveys hand will just creep under the blanket to jack
- he’ll give a handjob right there on the couch
- if jacks lucky then its a blowjob
- if they’re both feeling lucky then one of them is bent over
- jack will do the same, but he’s more verbal when he wants something
- he’ll go to daveys ear in public and whisper a teasing “i want you”
- though they’re not one for public sex
- the most public they’ve gone is the car
- when it comes to whos loudest, it’s jack
- baby is LOUD
- he talks and he moans and he says daveys name like its a prayer
- davey could listen to it and get off strictly on that
- he loves to give
- but he’s also a baby when hes bottoming
- jack’s a tiny bit bigger, and davey fucking loves it
- they’ve done it over the kitchen counter, on the dinner table, the couch, the bedroom, the car, the bathroom, the shower (once and never again)
- nowhere in their house is safe
- but they love each other and they ALWAYS make sure the other is comfortable
- they both adore aftercare and they are the softest to each other
- bubble baths, blankets, cuddles
- they’re overall just reallt good for one another
so thats it! i hope this was good 🥺 thank you for requesting <3

Hello!!! Could I get a fic of my sweet sweet child Fic request please?? Smalls being sick and miserable and it's up to her two big brothers Jojo and Buttons to make it better? Also let's face it, she would want Albert there too. I see them being close and there isnt enough of that content. I like to beleive she wears her cap backwards to match Albert :)
”Jo, go get Al. She won't stay in bed no matter how hard I try.” Buttons whined, pushing the vertically challenged girl down by the shoulders.
”I’m not that sick!”
Jojo raised a brow, a loud cough filled the short silence. ”ALBERT”
Smalls flinched, retreating back into her pillow. Her red nose quickly filled with snot. She groaned. Back straightened out again, she flicked Buttons hand away. When Albert walked into the room a small smile appeared on her face while the exact opposite lay on his. She blew her nose again. The glum look worsened for a moment before he smiled.
”What's got you in such a state, mini-me?”
”I blame it on the snow.” Jojo's eyes flicked over the white rooftops. ”If only someone hadn't insisted on a snowball fight last night.”
The two of them looked at each other. Albert soon burst out laughing, followed by Smalls. Followed by a coughing fit.
”You should've seen the headshot I got on Tommy Boy.” Smalls croaked.
”And Crutchie’s defensive skills. That boy can really use a crutch.” Buttons took Albert’s hat and whacked him with it.
”What about the hole in your coat that I had to fix.”
